Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Oh shit.

"Sorry honey, we'll have to postpone the Disney trip so that I can buy CDs. Wait, where are you going?"

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

Surely, the next one will have the "Live at the punk festival" version of "The Lords Prayer" etc... ?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Wouldn't that be nice?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

About fucking time! I wish it would hurry to A Kiss in the Dreamhouse, though.

Ian Riese-Moraine: a casualty of social estrangement. (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

Yeah me too. I don't think I'm gonna get any re-issue before 'Juju'

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh you say that now...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

I am about to throw up with what with the amount of anticipation I have for Join Hands.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

That's actually the album I'll be the most interested in hearing, because I wonder if a remaster will be as revelatory as the Pornography one was.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

OOooohhhh....me likey likey likey.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

These are going to be imports with import prices, no? Not that it will deter me for one second, but still ...

bkjj40a (bkjj40a), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm hoping for a domestic issue like the Cure stuff...not clear yet.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Oh shit the bed. I just bought the first 6 Siouxsie discs about two years ago.

Some of these are going to be must haves though. I agree about "Kiss In The Dreamhouse".

I'm a Hyaena fan too.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Highlights of 0805 update post from admin of Siouxsie site;

"Remasters Clarification. All studio albums and Nocturne to be remastered. Not Once/Twice Upon A Time. Only The Scream and Juju have the go ahead for the deluxe double editions at present, the rest will be single CDs with three to four bonus tracks which is likely to include non album singles.

Remaining BBC Sessions are not set to appear on any other albums with the possible exception of Juju.

Early next year sees the release of Join Hands, Kaleidoscope and the deluxe double Juju provisionally all set for release in February."

bkjj40a (bkjj40a), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Hm, clarity. But not all double-discs! That's unfortunate, I'd have thought there'd be as much live/demo etc. oddball stuff around to work with as with the Cure. Different live era material would be wonderful.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Me too.

Slow release schedule! Kaleidoscope et al early next year? It'll be forever before the magical tri-fecta of Tinderbox/Looking Glass/Peep Show.

bkjj40a (bkjj40a), Friday, 19 August 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

My girlfriend's a big Siouxsie fan, but she said she's not getting any of the reissues until they get to the later albums either.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 August 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

b-b-b-b-but if nobody buys the early albums maybe they'll never reissue the later ones!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 19 August 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

i will be buying them all... especially kaleidoscope, which remains my fave to this day. all of them are great, but that one stands out the most to me. as jerri blank would say... "i am as moist as a snack cake."

ehbenoit, Friday, 19 August 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm buying them all too. Great things on all of them. I wouldn't worry. A good amount of Banshees fans are pretty obsessive. Actually, they tend to be pre-disposed to being obsessed about music in general. Can't put a finger on why, but it's there.

bkjj40a (bkjj40a), Friday, 19 August 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

I only have Juju and Superstition on CD, so this is perfect for me.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 August 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I only have Join Hands and Peep Show on CD so I'm definitely going to buy The Scream, A Kiss In The Dreamhouse, and Tinderbox.

That was a problem with me for the Cure re-issues. I still haven't bought the last 3 because I already have those albums in so many formats I couldn't get myself to spend that much money. Should I?

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Friday, 19 August 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

This is a good time to address the remaster question. I sometimes have a hard time justifying replacing my original copies with the remasters, because a lot of the time the sound quality doesn't seem to be noticeably improved -- it's mainly mixed louder. There are noticeable exceptions, such as the remastered Raw Power, and the first four Funkadelic albums. But in the end, I usually give in when there's bonus tracks and I can trade in the old ones for a decent price.

I've been holding off on The Cure albums, because they're so damn expensive, and Boys Don't Cry is missing key tracks like "Killing An Arab" and "Plastic Passion." Has anyone compared the remasters with the originals side-by-side?

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 19 August 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

This is where a decent stereo setup really helps. But even from ripped mp3s I say there is a huge benefit to The Cure remasters. Hoping for a similar effect with the Siouxsie releases bc I think the first round of cds are pretty much garbage. (Well, the earlier ones at least.)

As for The Cure, I would skip Three Imaginary Boys, but Seventeen Seconds and Pornography are both stunning with great extras. Faith is an album I never really appreciated, but hearing it spun remastered with Carnage Visors on the end is excellent listening.

As for Siouxsie, if you've heard any of the B-Sides boxset, you'll know firsthand how much better the albums will potentially be when remastered.

I put most of it down to remater technology available now as opposed to 15+ years ago when record companies were rushing everything out to CD bc the format took off.

bkjj40a (bkjj40a), Saturday, 20 August 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

bkjj40a seconded. The Pornography reissue is absolutely stunning, and a testament to how the remastering process really can improve on a classic album, by revealing stuff you didn't know was there and presenting the stuff you were familiar with instead of just cranking up the volume levels.

Unrelated one: does anyone know if the Downside Up box is ever getting a US release?

Unrelated two: PRINCE. MUST. BE. REMASTERED. Purple Rain and (to a bit lesser extent) Around the World in a Day are acceptable, but the rest sound absolutely horrid. Sign o' the Times especially. Flat, lifeless, way too quiet...urgh.

telephonething, who misplaced his password and is too lazy to get it resent, Saturday, 20 August 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

Don't know for sure, but I would seriously doubt Downside Up gets a U.S. release. I think it is what it is. I mean, they never made the kind of dent The Cure did here.

Got mine for a decent price (like $60?) on one of those Amazon z shops. Check it out. Didn't take long to arrive either. The packaging is mint. The sound is mint. Also bought one for my brother as a b-day gift (and so I don't have to lend mine out).

bkjj40a (bkjj40a), Saturday, 20 August 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

Thanks- I'll check it out...$60 is most definitely acceptable. Found one for $54, which I'll probably end up doing on my next payday...there are two cheaper from a "caiman.com," but I'm kind of leery of them since they seem to have everything (at least everything on my wish list), but with multiple "new" copies listed at different prices, and the same prices under the new and used sections. I'm figuring they're either pirated copies or the "new" ones are not so.

telephonething etc, Saturday, 20 August 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

bkjj40a seconded. The Pornography reissue is absolutely stunning, and a testament to how the remastering process really can improve on a classic album, by revealing stuff you didn't know was there and presenting the stuff you were familiar with instead of just cranking up the volume levels.

I did but didn’t know Pornography could sound that good. The reasons why this process is taking so long and with delays is because Robert Smith wouldn't have it any other way. The other thing with the Cure is that the original issues are really poor. I feel that it's more than worth it money wise, but than again I'm a big fan.

I'm stunned that these are not going to be all double CD's. Than you say that it might be import only? Thought Siouxsie was a bit bigger.

BeeOK (boo radley), Saturday, 20 August 2005 05:46 (twenty years ago)

Never had a problem with caiman. Mostly it's a willingness to wait a couple/few weeks. But I remember the Siouxsie boxes arriving quickly.

bkjj40a (bkjj40a), Saturday, 20 August 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

I used to have every original Siouxsie LP. Traded them in for Nurse With Wound or some such in the late 80's, to my eternal shame. I can't wait for Kaleidoscope! You later Siouxsie lovers should check that one out especially.

sleeve (sleeve), Saturday, 20 August 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

When did Siouxsie and the Banshees become classic rock?

John Hunter, Saturday, 20 August 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

All kidding aside, I'm excited to see that the catalog is being given the same treatment that the Cure and Echo & The Bunnymen have received. Now we just need some decent Smiths remasters . . .

John Hunter, Saturday, 20 August 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Since you asked Fastnbulbous, here is ILM's thread regarding the Cure remasteres. It's ridiculously long but if you scroll down to when the last three were released (April or so) than you can see where people starting talking about the sound quality difference between the originals and the newer remastered ones.

A thread for the Cure reissues

BeeOK (boo radley), Saturday, 20 August 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

I'll buy all the Siouxsie reissues, too! The only Siouxsie I have right now, sadly, is Join Hands and Twice Upon a Time. I just REALLY want A Kiss in the Dreamhouse and Nocturne.

Ian Riese-Moraine: a casualty of social estrangement. (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 20 August 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Shame about the lack of rarities. I'd been curious to hear some of the stuff of the 'Kaleidoscope' era. Did they play those songs live?

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Saturday, 20 August 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

They played Red Light all the time. Christine and Happy House too.

bkjj40a (bkjj40a), Saturday, 20 August 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

x-post Caiman.com has been fine, the couple of times I've ordered from them (via Amazon).

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Sunday, 21 August 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

So, I guess the "roxy" gig remains unreleased?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

"The Scream appears first on October 4"

Hurrah!

"# Make Up To Break Up (Riverside Session)

# Suburban Relapse (Peel Session)
# Hong Kong Garden (Peel Session)

So once again (as with The Cure reissues) you're expected to buy the Downside Up box if you want "Voices" or "20th Century Boy"; and most importantly where's "Captain Scarlet"?!?

"Surely, the next one will have the "Live at the punk festival" version of "The Lords Prayer" etc... ?"

Logically (chronologically) I'd have thought it really should be on this one - although it really is pretty bloody dreadful and; unless there are substantially better quality recordings of it about than any IIII've ever heard; I can't imagine it ever being legitimately released.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

True, true, but seeing as how album one is rounding up the demos and peel sessions, and how album two took on the Lords Prayer stuff, it seemed to be the place to put it.

Oh yeah, "Captain Scarlet!"

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 August 2005 08:00 (twenty years ago)

what about "bad shape" only have that on a couple of real dodgy bootlegs and a seg of them performing it on that Punk Rock Movie video. it is quite hilarious and rough...

ehbenoit, Monday, 22 August 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

Also "Scraphead and "Psychic".

There are studio demos available for all of these!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

heyyyyyy, i don't have those. i'm missing something!!

ehbenoit, Monday, 22 August 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

As a result, you shall not be suffered to live. You fake fan. (I don't have those either.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

I am actually kind of happy to be coming into Siouxsie fandom after the fact because I really don't know what I'm missing with these reissues, so the fact that they exist at all makes me feel all funny inside.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

I might buy 'The Scream' reissue just to be able to listen to "Overground" at an even more satisfying volume.

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Don't get too excited - unfortunately The Banshees kind of peaked with the first album (if truth be told their second one in particular is a bit of a dog!) and it's certainly the only one that really warrants this sort of double-disc reissue treatment.

(x-post)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Er, their first album isn't Tinderbox!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

No, it's The Scream, which is considerably better.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Tinderbox and The Scream are tied for no. 1 in my household.

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

I think I'd put Kaleidoscope above Tinderbox ('though still below The Scream).

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

you think their peak is the scream?? i always felt that kaleidoscope was the best. i love most of their records, but i think that is the priceless one... and i do kind of like the over-indulgence of join hands as well.

ehbenoit, Monday, 22 August 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

It seems they're finally releasing Nocturne on DVD soon too.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Tinderbox is a perfect album. The Scream is not.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

"you think their peak is the scream??"

Yup. Completely blew me away the first time I heard it; none of the others have ever really come close.

"Tinderbox is a perfect album. The Scream is not."

Tinderbox was a predictable album. The Scream was not.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Predictable how?

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Predictable in that it sounded (in the nicest possible way) just like you'd expect a Banshees album to sound!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

The only Banshees album I'd heard before Tinderbox was Peepshow, which kind of does its own thing in a fairly different manner. Even Hyaena and Juju sound markedly different to me thanks to production style, plus the songs can't be fucked with (particularly that second side! OMG). And none of them sound anything like Superstition or The Scream or the bits I've heard of Join Hands and Kaleidescope.

It's kind of akin to saying, "Oh, that just sounds like a typical Cure album" when none of them really sound alike (ESPECIALLY pre-1989).

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

(IOW, STEP OFF GRANDPA YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND *slams bedroom door*)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

And thus the goth/punk wars began.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

"It's kind of akin to saying, "Oh, that just sounds like a typical Cure album" when none of them really sound alike (ESPECIALLY pre-1989)."

Actually I've always thought that Seventeen Seconds and Faith very definitely belong together stylistically. ;~P

Be that as it may 'though, I'm not particularly saying that any particular album sounds specifically like any preceding one, just that (in the both cases) pretty much everything that either band released from, say, 1984 onwards was immediately recognisable as being by that band, and that from that point onwards the contents of each band's musical pallette was always far more familiar than it was unfamiliar.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

"Tinderbox was a predictable album. The Scream was not."

i do agree with you a bit on this stewart, but it kind of made it great in that way that it was sort of like the ultimate definition of the banshees at that point. it was a great record and the tour was fantastic, but ultimately as you inferred it was a bit expected for long standing fans. i have to say though, some of the songs were a bit sweeter than usual such as in the case of "sweetest chill" one of my favorite songs, "lands end" another schorcher and "party's fall", but the banshees vibe was still very much there. unlike the following two records which broke the mold, especially peepshow.

however, I still stand by kaleidoscope as their best record... i just can't sway on that. :)

"shoulders form rows to make waves again..."

ehbenoit, Monday, 22 August 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Kaleidoscope is probably my second favourite.

How I'd feel about their albums if I'd heard them in a different order other than chronologically as they were released (when they released), I have no idea - but (having only seen them once and heard the first couple of Peel sessions and Hong Kong Garden beforehand) The Scream astounded me in a way very few albums by anyone have done before or since.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 22 August 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

The order I heard their albums (of the ones I've heard):

Peepshow
Tinderbox
Superstition
Hyaena
(bits of Kaleidescope, A Kiss In The Dreamhouse, Join Hands)
Nocturne
The Scream
Juju

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Tinderbox hooked me, so I guess the sound was there, as you say. But the lyrical imagery along with just plain interesting music made all those songs listed by ehbenoit shine.

Immediately got the entire back catalogue, then Looking Glass, Peepshow, Superstition as they were released. With the exceptions of Join Hands and The Rapture I say they are all chock full of goodies. Yes, Kaliedoscope is awesome.

Initially I was dissapointed that Through The Looking Glass had no originals, but can you imagine their canon without it now? And I trust it will continue to age more gracefully than any other work of theirs.

Fortier (bkjj40a), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

You haven't heard the whole of Join Hands, Dan? OMG are you in a for a treat. Probably one of the more inconsistent SATB albums, but OMGWTF "Icon"...

Tinderbox was the first LP I got. I remember distinctly that my first impression upon hearing it was that it reminded me of ... Sinead o' Connor...
Tinderbox, Scream, Juju and possibly Rapture are the only SATB albums that are consistently great

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 06:46 (twenty years ago)

"Icon" completely rocks balls! (I forgot to mention The Seven Year Itch, which I heard after Nocturne; there was a very famous thread where I said it was a shame that Siouxsie was singing like ass and people kind of flipped out like I'd stormtroopered their poodles, even though she was bellowing like a dying caribou on "Land's End".)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

"It seems they're finally releasing Nocturne on DVD soon too."

Having investigated further I'm now seeing different and conflicting information and release dates everywhere! Does anyone here actually know for certain what's happening about this?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

It was supposed to come out on DVD a few months back but Severin posted saying they halted this because it was being done without band approval, and that they wanted to arrange for more extras and goodies and etc. Mind you, I'd be interested to see *what* exactly they do with it, since of course it features one R. Smith prominently and Mr. Severin's feelings towards him are different from those of Ms. Sioux.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Which one of them has "Fat Bob" fallen out with at the moment? He seems to have had a fairly volatile relationship with both of them over the years....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Why, Siouxsie of course. Severin and Smith are currently working together happily enough on the Glove reissue.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Well Siouxsie hates them both, right?

This means that as each album is reissued without a nice extra disc, they won't look as 'important' as the Cure. Right?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Look. Today I found PR, photos, and clips for the Dreamshow DVD;

http://video-c.co.uk/artistfeatures/siouxsiesioux/about.html

Fortier (bkjj40a), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

does she hate them or have a hard time working with them. i can not imagine that robert is a barrel of laughs, nor severin to be quite honest... and i am not saying that she is probably an angel herself, but... realistically speaking. i am sure none of them make it easy on each other.

ehbenoit, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

"Severin and Smith are currently working together happily enough on the Glove reissue."

"This means that as each album is reissued without a nice extra disc, [Siouxsie And The Banshees] won't look as 'important' as the Cure. Right?"

I wonder if there'll be a bonus disc with the reissue of Blue Sunshine?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

methinks that the rofles are plentier with Bob and Steve...

TS: Night out with Bob and Severin vs. Suzie and Budgie?

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

xpost yes as it's a Cure tie-in.

Didn't they appear on the Oxford Road Show, back in...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

When they're together 'though, they're like Laurel and Hardy, only with a substantially larger drug habit.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Severin's last message on the Glove reissue indicated there would indeed be a bonus disc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Ooooh. Mrs. Clarke isn't going to be too happy about that then, is she?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

"When they're together 'though, they're like Laurel and Hardy, only with a substantially larger drug habit."

LOL

though i think i would rather spend a night with siouxsie and budgie, a) the shit-talking would be better and b) the cats...

three weeks pass...
So many things...
Yes I wish Bad Shape were on there, but just like the cure reissues--loookitallthestuff! and furthermore...GIMMMEE!!!

don't do a disservice to the excellent album tracks on kaliedescope please!

If these are following the cure format, expect bsides to be omitted, there's a box set for that for both bands.

There will be a reissue of The Glove LP with the cure reissues!
I can't wait to have siouxsie and pitts--I mean Nocturne on DVD! Robert's guitar is so cool looking!

I can't wait the most for Hyeana remastered---it needs it the most out of all of them so we can hear all the crazy stuff going on!

But, I can't wait to BLAST LAND'S END out into the neighborhood.

Finally, I always buy the remaster because there's always a reason to inside, and I keep the old packaging in the new--my old cure cassette and cd covers fit nicely in the cure packaging, so if these are the same....

And finally, I have the A Short Term Effect live version that was remastered for Pornography and it FAR surpasses the remastering on their reissue. Why? because to remaster and have everything level out, you lose some quality on some tracks and gain on others--you look for the happy medium, so expect the extras to sound a little different from what you are used to.

Blah blah blah, blah blah.

so 2 banshees questions. how come MAKE UP TO BREAK UP is so well known if it's never been released until now? and secondly how come it hasn't been released until now?

piscesboy, Friday, 21 October 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

Because it was shown as part of Tony Wilson's two 'different' punk retrospective TV progs that we videotaped and played semi-regularly, and often gets shown in isolation, mainly because Mick Hucknell is moshing stage front.

Right. Finally got this over the weekend. ME HAPPY. And I'm listening to it now, and yes the damn thing sounds great.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 November 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

Note to self: check back when Juju comes out.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 17 November 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

So I believe Dan had something to say about this reissue.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 November 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

It is fucking awesome.

Also it is way way way better than Three Imaginary Boys and if Siouxsie hadn't done that stupid swastika shit, I'd have been all on her jock from the get-go as opposed to avoiding her like the plague for fear of encountering some neo-Nazi bullshit.

Dan ("Mirage" And "Metal Postcard" Are Completely Brilliant) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 November 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

The opening to "Mirage" is really quite amazing, it's a truly 'metallic' sound that's unlike most other guitar of the period.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 November 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

I've often thought it's a real shame that John McKay and Kenny Morris just seemed to completely disappear after quitting The Banshees

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 28 November 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, The Scream is quite something, although I don't really feel compelled to pick up this re-issue. The guitar sound on this is just amazing, e.g. on 'Mirage' or 'Switch'. Plus, it's got SATB's finest moment, i.e. 'Overground'

Baaderonixx weaves a daisy chain for... SATAN!! (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

xpost Yeah, I think it was one of those situations where they got such a bad rep from the ones that they left behind that no-one wanted to know.

Any news about more reissues. They MUST do the whole lot!

I have played The Scream reissue more than anything else this year. The Peel and Pathway sessions are just SO fantastic. Her voice is great - quite girlish and playful on the likes of Mirage, HKG, Carcass espec, with none of the goth foghorn that she sometimes lapsed into later. We all talk about McGeoch and Budgie, but McKay and Morris sound terrific. McKay's metallic tone sounds better on the sessions than on the album, where Lilywhite takes the edge off a touch. I wonder if it's Pete Fenton playing guitar on 'Make-Up..'? Maybe I should read the sleeve notes! The Peel version of Overground is amazing too - (why did I never bother with the Peel sessions before this?) - love the little organ on it. I could talk about this all day.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Thursday, 2 February 2006 15:13 (twenty years ago)

It's a great, great reissue, that's for sure. Might have to dig it out again tonight!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 February 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Do you reckon there are more in the pipeline, Ned?

Dr.C (Dr.C), Thursday, 2 February 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

The word was that the rest will indeed be reissued, but not necessarily in double-disc format. Since the Downside Up box has all the B-sides, they're doing like they did with the Cure and not attached said B-sides to the reissues. Beyond that, news has been kinda sporadic.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 February 2006 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I played this reissue to death, as well. Honestly, I'd probably have been a much larger punk booster had I heard this before I heard the Sex Pistols; "Metal Postcard", "Suburban Relapse" and "Switch" are just godly.

Dan (Mmmmmmm) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 February 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

xpost - Well, yes the b-sides are on the boxset, but I was hoping for more radio sessions (Kid Jensen, Richard Skinner/ J.Peel 79/81 sessions) live and outtakes.

I am disappointed that The Scream didn't include the whole of the Riverside session and the preceding Track studios session (Scraphead/20th C Boy/Captain Scarlet/Psychic).

Dr.C (Dr.C), Thursday, 2 February 2006 16:29 (twenty years ago)

The Scream reissue is just fantastic!
Will some other albums really reissued this month?
I hope so, I am a new fan and I just can't wait. :)

duckfeeling, Saturday, 11 February 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

"Her voice is great - quite girlish and playful on the likes of Mirage, HKG, Carcass espec, with none of the goth foghorn that she sometimes lapsed into later."

She had to completely re-learn how to sing at one point (around '79-'80 iirc) because unfortunately she was developing nodules or something and was in imminent danger of destroying her voice completely.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Saturday, 11 February 2006 20:57 (twenty years ago)

i can't wait!

duckfeeling, Sunday, 26 February 2006 22:22 (twenty years ago)

Have "Infantry" and "Sitting Room" been released before or are they unheard archive tracks? This is all very exciting.

sleeve (sleeve), Sunday, 26 February 2006 23:13 (twenty years ago)

More bonus tracks less replace-the-annoying-scratch-on-nightshift please.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 27 February 2006 00:26 (twenty years ago)

I assume the version of "Eve White Eve Black" is different to the one on the 'B'-side of "Christine" and (presumably) Downside Up?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 27 February 2006 11:19 (twenty years ago)

I'd assume its the same.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 27 February 2006 11:24 (twenty years ago)

Why would they include that one B-side when they've carefully excluded all the others?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 27 February 2006 11:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm hoping EWEB and Paradise Place are the Leeds Futurama live versions that were on TV (can't remember the show).

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 27 February 2006 11:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's very unlikely it'd be the Downside Up one.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 February 2006 12:47 (twenty years ago)

I just got the "scream" one, £8.99 !

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 12:08 (twenty years ago)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, from the "Sound Machine"

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Why can't they do a reissue that's just 15 versions of "Night Shift"?

Dan (Fuck The Mothers, Kill The Others) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

what is the bonus "icon"? live?

Meantime, here's a report on some of the bonus stuff on the Nocturne DVD:

"You have got to check out the Siouxsie & The Banshees Nocturne DVD. Not only does it have the original live concert with Robert, but two TV
appearances with Mr. Smith as well. Plus one of the Bonus features is a BBC TV Special that i'd probably only read about, but had never seen.
It is basically filmed LSD. Robert, Sioux, Budgie, and Severin all dressed as Alice visit Wonderland (also the name of the Banshees record label). While in Wonderland, Robert gets interrogated by surreal clowns, then there's a segway into a Creatures' video, then a Glove performance (!!) of "A Blues In Drag", Sioux tells a story, and more bizarro mini-films. It just has to be seen - a must for any Cure fan."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 May 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)

That does sound wild.

Edward Bax (EdBax), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 00:24 (twenty years ago)

I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary; if anything, the songs sounded much clearer to me.

This reissue job is a joke

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

The album sounds (intentionally) murky and muffled. I believe it's supposed to sound oppressive and menacing but it comes across to me like someone is sitting on my speakers and I'm actually hearing the album as if it is being played through someone's ass.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

I am listening right now, (on an ipod). Regal Zone on right now -sounds great to me, drums really crisp. Maybe the edge has been rolled off the guitar slightly, but doesn't sound too different to what I remember of the old vinyl.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

I am mostly focusing on the guitar. Actually, I'm mostly focusing on "Icon".

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

Guitar sounds fine on Placebo Effect. Right...I'll skip to Icon.

Sorry Dan, it sounds really good to me, but possibly a bit quieter than I remembered. Maybe it's just that there's more space around the guitar - you can hear REALLY clearly when he stomps on the tremolo at the start of the chorus (e.g at 2'15"). I like details like this!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

The vocal is fine but everything else just seems... subdued.

I think the guitar tone isn't nearly as bright as it is on virtually every other siouxsie recording I've heard, which may be influencing my perception here. I'm also comparing this sonically to the version on The Seven Year Itch which has atrocious vocals but balls-out FANTASTIC guitar and drums.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

Ha! I just put the 7-year itch version on too! I really don't like the guitar throughout on that record - far too much flange for me. The heavy tremolo bit on the chorus of Icon might work if it was tighter in time with the drums. MacKay's original was way better. Straight chords but LOUDER would have worked for me. But you're right, the vocals are fucking dreadful!

You guys:

Siouxsie and the Banshees at the BBC is a stunning 84-track, all digitally-remastered, 4 disc hard-back book set of exclusive BBC sessions, live concert tracks and TV performances recorded between 1977–2001 split across 3CDs and a DVD. All tracks were hand picked by the band, including alternative versions of 18 classic hit singles, key session tracks from 1977-1987 and a concert recording from the Apollo Theatre in Oxford in 1985. The set also includes the complete John Peel sessions alongside sessions recorded for Kid Jensen, Richard Skinner and Janice Long. Disc 3 contains highlights from their BBC concert recordings at the Apollo Theatre in Oxford and the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1988, where the band performed a storming set 3 nights in a row to a sold out crowd. Highlights include a breathtaking "Last Beat of My Heart", "Christine" and a rip roaring crowd pleasing end of show version of "Hong Kong Garden". Disc 4, however, is the real gem; a 29 track DVD of the band’s BBC TV performances, features the complete Old Grey Whistle Test broadcasts from 1978, 1982 and 1985, the Something Else performances from 1979 and 1980, the Rock Goes to College broadcast from 1981 and the band’s complete Top of the Pops performances. A fantastic 30 page booklet contains extensive sleeve notes by Paul Morley, interviews with all the band members and a unique and insightful introduction written by Siouxsie.

baaderonixx, Thursday, 26 March 2009 09:19 (seventeen years ago)

Sounds like a terrific package, but why Morley?

Soukesian, Thursday, 26 March 2009 10:09 (seventeen years ago)

Morley seems inescapable, when it comes to UK post-punk reissues.

I suppose he was around at the time, but I really can't imagine him having anything to tell me about the Banshees, and they're not a band I'd ever associate him with. Is he going to go on and on about Kylie?

That's me bought everything from the reissue series up to 'Tinderbox' I'm guessing 'Peepshow' isn't being reissued?

What do folks make of the sound problems that are said to plague the reissues? It's my first time getting acquainted with the Banshees back catalogue but there's a few bits that sound a bit dodgy to my ears. On a few of the sets the bonus demos sound better quality wise than the album versions (i.e 'Happy House' on 'Kaleidoscope') and there's some apparent drop outs in some of the mixing. How do the resissues stack up to the original viny versions?

Great stuff though. Been a real pleasure discovering them recently.

AnotherDeadHero, Sunday, 21 February 2010 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

Sound problems? I know there was an issue with the single-disc "The Scream" but otherwise I hadn't heard anything. And I did some A/B comparisons with the original CDs, too.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 21 February 2010 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

I think they sound really, really great! Was just playing Dreamhouse yesterday and it's so deep and detailed. That BBC box is a cracker too.

So are Peepshow, Superstition and The Rapture being re-done? Anyone know?

Dr.C, Monday, 22 February 2010 11:47 (sixteen years ago)

BBC box is top of the list next for me. I got into them through the 'Nocturne' disc so I'm looking forward to more live stuff. There's doesn't seem to be many decent Banshees bootlegs on the web. I did download a Rockpalast WDR show from Koln in 81 on the Juju tour which was excellent thought. How great is John McGeogh?

As for the sound problems. This is from an amazon review of Juju;
"When I first read his review about the dropouts, I was skeptical because his was the only review of the three albums that talked about problems with audio quality; but as soon as I received my copies of the three new albums, I threw in Juju and listed for the supposed right-channel dropouts. There's no question about it - they're there. So the next logical step in trying to debunk his review was to rush straight back to my original (Geffen, not Polydor) CD that I bought 12 years ago to see if the same problems were present. Thanks to the not-so-subtle magic of having two CD drives on my computer, I was able to compare the same snippets of audio in rapid succession. The result: the original discs didn't contain the dropouts that are on the remaster. In fact, on "Into The Light," there's a crystal clear peak in volume on the original CD where the remaster's right channel gurgles.

When it comes to volume and clarity, this disc is all over the map (though not as extreme as the last two tracks on "Kaleidoscope" - How a demo version of "Happy House" can sound infinitely better than the remastered version of "Israel" is mind-boggling). To use just two examples on "Juju," the remastered "Into The Light" makes the original CD sound as though it's being played under two feet of water, and I'm not talking about the removal of producer Nigel Gray's "walking on the moon" sound that permeates the entire album. In contrast, there appears to be no upgrade in sound quality on "Sin In My Heart."

AnotherDeadHero, Monday, 22 February 2010 16:14 (sixteen years ago)

I must have cloth ears - all of this has passed me by. Will have a listen to some of this tonight. I'm not really that fussed about the odd glitch though.

Dr.C, Monday, 22 February 2010 16:23 (sixteen years ago)

I thought they all sounded great loud on my stereo. It's only since I put them on my mp3 and listened through headphones that I began to notice some of the drop outs etc. Like I said though, I don't have any originals to compare with so I can't speak with any authority at all really. The music is superb though. Can't believe I overlooked them for so long.

AnotherDeadHero, Monday, 22 February 2010 16:26 (sixteen years ago)

I must have cloth ears - all of this has passed me by. Will have a listen to some of this tonight. I'm not really that fussed about the odd glitch though.

Same here, actually. I didn't get the fuss about either the Siouxsie or the New Order reissues -- both sound just fine to my ears, but maybe I'm just "not listening critically enough" or what have you.

I will, when I see one in Fopp for FoppPrice.

Mark G, Thursday, 6 January 2011 09:23 (fifteen years ago)

Really? Aside from the singles "Join Hands" never really grabbed me. What are you hearing that makes you react that way?

steve severin's fb page states they are doing a 20 disc mega box including a dvd and all the albums and singles.

akm, Sunday, 11 September 2011 05:41 (fourteen years ago)

20?? Let's see... 11 proper albums, "Nocturne", 4 discs from "Downside Up", 3 from "At The BBC", one for that 1981 gig he mentions on his page. That's 20!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 11 September 2011 13:36 (fourteen years ago)

first album was a double in the remasters, rest just had bonus tracks. doubt the BBC seshs 'd be in this. that's 18!

challopian rubes (sic), Sunday, 11 September 2011 23:24 (fourteen years ago)

Funny, when I managed to get JoinHands for Foppcheap, I thought it a reasonably consistent album up to the Lords Prayer. Like sides 3 and 3.5 of "The Scream"...

This version of TLP seemed quite different to the muffled Roxy live version I had in song 'bits'. I nearly fell off my chair (I was driving) when her bit of "Knocking on Heavens Door" went into the Legendary Stardust Cowboy track.

It's totally mad, daftest thing they ever did. I'm assuming the original was meant to have more (um..) menace behind it.

Mark G, Monday, 12 September 2011 08:52 (fourteen years ago)

who exactly would buy such a "megabox"?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 12 September 2011 11:52 (fourteen years ago)

Updated, release on Oct. 13, no tracklists yet:

Further:

It appears the Banshees’ archival releases indeed won’t be limited to the final four reissues. Dropping further hints on the Banshees’ Facebook group, Severin this week wrote, “Something else drops on Oct. 20th. Another thing in November. Something in the New Year and something BIG in March.”

I am really, really starting to sink into the oppressively smothering hollow shell that is Join Hands

DJP, Tuesday, 24 February 2015 18:47 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, that was the last Siouxsie album I went back and got - 20 years after first getting into them!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 24 February 2015 19:33 (eleven years ago)

Something about enduring MN-esque winter temperatures for the past 6 weeks for the first time in over 20 years combined with more concentrated snow than I've ever seen in my life has pushed me into the exact right headspace to appreciate every nook and cranny of this album, which has not kept me from looping "Icon" and "Playground Twist" for hours at a time.

DJP, Tuesday, 24 February 2015 19:57 (eleven years ago)

that's a great album. it was unfairly maligned for a long time.

akm, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 04:52 (eleven years ago)

JH always seemed a bit short despite the superfluois padding (Lord's Prayer - yawn) but the highs (ICON! Premature Burial!) definitely kicked my ass as a wee goth

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 09:49 (eleven years ago)

Join Hands was always the one that seemed the most remarkable to me. Like, Kaleidoscope has better jams, but Join Hands is just this dark vision

The Complainte of Ray Tabano, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 11:12 (eleven years ago)

Yeah it shows the band that they could have been but I guess the departure of the rhytm section acted as a reset button for them

The Join Hands remaster is great.

And jeez, I forgot how punishing of an album it is. Squally squally distortion everywhere.

the vinyl remaster with the original artwork?

so, the new boxset.

having not heard the previous set of remasters with extra tracks, i have to say this new cheap-n-cheerful boxset of the first 6 albums (coverart by one of our own !), sounds fantastic.

or, am i not an enough of a fanboy to notice the subtle f*ck ups ?

mark e, Thursday, 4 February 2016 20:48 (ten years ago)

wait who did the cover art don't make me buy this thing I have literally everything on it

if they did an all-encompassing box covering the first two albums and attendant singles, and all previous....

"Oh, Ted, that would be amazin, woah yeah! Just that Ted..."

Mark G, Thursday, 4 February 2016 21:07 (ten years ago)

ahh : checked the post, not 'DID', but 'DIG'.
sorry to have raised excitement levels.
still, no left/right dropouts as mentioned on various s&b threads/discussion groups.
tis a very slimline boxset, no credits, nothing.
but, exactly what i wanted.
though having heard the 14 minute 'lords prayer' track, i aint so sure now !

mark e, Thursday, 4 February 2016 21:20 (ten years ago)

xp yeah a Downside Up reissue for a reasonable price would be awesome. But please god not in a clamshell box.
