From the 4AD site:
"This November, 4AD celebrates its 25th anniversary... celebratory projects include a deluxe Cocteau Twins 4 CD box set..."

What could it be? All the EPs squashed up on to four discs?

Deluxe (Damian), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

yes, that's exactly what it is. includes the post-4ad singles too

LULLABIES TO VIOLANE: REMASTERED COCTEAU TWINS SINGLES BOX SET FEATURING ALL THEIR SINGLES FROM 1982 TO 1996

For the first time all the non-album tracks from across the Cocteau Twins’ entire career have been compiled together and offer a unique view of their musical journey from the perspective of all their single / EP releases which incorporate most of their best known tracks.

CTBOX 2
This is an unusual de-luxe package containing all 4 CD’s that will be available November 21 (UK / Europe) and November 22 (USA) in a worldwide limited edition of 10,000. The discs are contained in a fold-out package made of a material that itself sounds like a Cocteau Twins title – Curious Soft Touch Milk. It’s all very tactile, minimal and v23.

DAD 2513CD and DAD 2514CD
These are the regular versions of the box set which will be available early 2006. Each package is a digipak with 2 CD’s. Volume One covers the 4AD era (1982 – 1990) and Volume Two the Mercury / Capitol years (1993 – 1996).

The 4AD material was previously available in a 10 x CD box set which had a CD for each single, though this set features alternative mixes of "Pearly-Dewdrops’ Drops" and "Aikea-Guinea". Mmm... convenient.

Deluxe (Damian), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

mmmm...not as good as the one i sold to the vinyl exchange in '02 when i were skint.

i'd have preferred the get-back-together tour we were promised

piscesboy, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

So it has "alternate" versions of two of their essential tracks, but without the more familiar takes??? Sorry, I'll pass.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

That's just so f*cking annoying I can't believe it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

yeah that is kinda stupid

jimmy glass (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

"Here's your New Order four disc set. An acoustic version of "Blue Monday" appears in place of the original 12" mix."

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

"Here's your My Bloody Valentine box. The Andrew Weatherall remix of "Soon" appears in place of the original."

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

etc

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

From Guthrie's weblog:

"The alternative takes that I've found of Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops and Aikea Guinea are choices I made from around 3 or 4 takes of, and hey, fuck it, this is the pertinent point, essentially the same mix.
When I originally mixed these tracks it was over a 2 to 3 day timescale and, with the novelty of automation, I was in the habit of putting a few different versions down before I'd felt I had it 'right'.

Of course, one has to only wait twenty odd years to realize that someone, somewhere, just due to the very existence of these artifacts, will find it fit to choose one as the definitive version over the rest, usually an obscure rejected version, done when I was high and forgot to unmute the vocals until ringo climbed down from the ceiling with the drugs and got back on to his kit..therefore denying me the pleasure, and this is a rare thing in my business, of applying a little hindsight to the issue in hand.

Thus I decided which of the mixes (I found, in some cases, five or six), were better...... and used them accordingly. There is a glorious guitar part on the version of Pearly Dew-Drops' Drops which was never apparent for some reason............I remember the reason, very arcane but solvable with todays tech. And now solved it's a job well done as far as I'm concerned."

I'm sure he likes the new "improved" versions of Star Wars IV-VI better as well...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

that doesn't seem so bad.. at least it's not a different take or summat

jimmy glass (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

the alternate versions are there to force 4AD collectors to re-buy the first volume. cha-ching. i'll wait for the handy second volume, collecting all the post-4AD singles. which are in fact really good!

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

xpost:
That's *exactly* what he's saying. Different takes, same "mix" (I think he's saying made at the same time on the same equipment).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah i dinnae read it proper like

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

What? No 12" version of "Peppermint Pig"?

Commence more grumbling now.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

Weird. Well, I'll get it anyway (or at the least the second volume, cause I only have Twinlights, Otherness and the Xmas songs from that one).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

I like the other one plenty -- and I like how each of the EP's are indiv. CD's myself.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

on the other hand, stuffing each CD with multiple EPs making ripping go much quicker. then you can keep the digipak safe in your 4AD humidor.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

They should have found room for "Millimillenary", just because, and just because it's good.

Deluxe (Damian), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

"Here's your My Bloody Valentine box. The Andrew Weatherall remix of "Soon" appears in place of the original."

Sounds good to me.

Quickly, ducks bricks being thrown by Ned

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

New Order compilations actually are like that! The original version of Temptation is still unreissued AFAIK. Apart from on a comp called The Indie Scene 1982, but that's OOP.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

Quickly, ducks bricks being thrown by Ned

Keep running.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

**The original version of Temptation is still unreissued AFAIK**

The original 7" is coming out on the Singles 2CD set. The original 12" is on the Retro box.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

i'll buy it like a sucker, cos' the deluxe version sounds lovely. i have all these recordings three times over but, it will be nice to have it all in one spot.

i just wish that they had done a proper recording of the last tour with mark clifford. it would be nice to have proper version of the tracks they did live with him... especially pitch the baby (one of my faves of all times)

i agree wholeheartedly with deluxe as well...

"They should have found room for "Millimillenary", just because, and just because it's good."

ehbenoit, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

I wish they had included "Crush" too cause it's an essential track (and a single), but I'll buy the whole thing anyway.

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

For someone too young to know, was the 10-disc set *not* remastered?

mike powell (mike powell), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

Not to Chris Ott's liking, no.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

no it wasn't. but I've also heard that the guthrie remasters of the albums that came out in the past year or so sucked.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

They should have found room for "Millimillenary", just because, and just because it's good.

Thirded.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...

Here's the album/box art.
http://4ad.static3.state51.co.uk/10/94/01850054_WWgh/200x200.jpg

matt2 (matt2), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I believed you the first time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I can't understand why.

matt2 (matt2), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

> on the other hand, stuffing each CD with multiple EPs making ripping go much quicker. then you can keep the digipak safe in your 4AD humidor.

there's probably space for the new box set *inside* the old box set (the 10 slimline cases of the uk version left plenty of leeway in there iirc).

this wouldn't be the first time i'd effectively shelled out money just for new 4ad artwork. last time was for that football single they did the cover of (southhampton? sunderland? one of those) but that was only 20p...

koogs (koogs), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

That's *exactly* what he's saying. Different takes, same "mix" (I think he's saying made at the same time on the same equipment).

he isn't really saying that. it's kind of hard to figure out, but I think what he's really saying is that these are just different mixes that he made at the same time of the same tracks. maybe some of those tracks didn't make all the mixes. it's difficult to really call recording of multitrack stuff a "take" anyway. my guess is that most of these tracks are the same as the ones on the version we already know, maybe this mix has some other things that were dropped.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
So like we were saying.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

haven't bought it yet mainly because the day I was in the shop they were playing it and I had to hear Frosty The Snowman and Winter Wonderland and I wasn't in the mood. I'll get it eventually though.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Same here -- I actually sold back the various singles I already had, figured why not. The nice thing is that since I have The Pink Opaque I have the 'original' versions of the two alternates.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

good point; is it safe to sell the box set then? are the bonus tracks on the extra ep on this?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

They aren't, which is why I kept that and sold back the rest. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

These are very compact packages.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

i wonder.....if you can keep that, sell back the other eps, and then fit all the cocteau twins album cds in the box?

these are the things I worry about when I should be working.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

* "Crushed" is easily my favorite Cocteaux track, but I already have it on CD from the first box, so I guess I'm not too devastated. A real shame for anyone who hasn't heard it, though.

* I think the Andrew Weatherall mix of "Soon" is absolutely brilliant. One of my favorite dance tracks of all time.

* Yes, lame not to include all the miscellaneous other rarities, but they were rather adamant on keeping this collection limited to "singles only." This enables them to release a new box set every ten years for the rest of eternity, each time strategically adding or subtracting certain items to keep the completists coming back (paging Elvis Costello....)

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

Crushed is on 'Lonely Is An Eyesore', no?

I found myself buying Lullabies to Violane at the weekend. I have not listened yet tho - I'm sort of saving it up for Xmas.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

maybe someone will give me this for christmas, so I won't have sticker shock when seeing the price.

Vinegar and Artichoke Hearts (Bimble...), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

it's cheap

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Amazon has the list price as $39.98. I know I paid way more for that 10 CD set.

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

i paid at least $50 for the box (twice!)

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

Crushed is on 'Lonely Is An Eyesore', no?

Yes, but I hate to say it, I think there's virtually nothing else to recommend that comp. At the risk of being flamed to a crisp.

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

By "virtually", you mean to leave a loophole for that excellent Throwing Muses song, I am most sure ;)

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

i went ahead and bought it from 4AD ($36.50 with shipping) because it is surprisingly cheap and i didn't want to wait until next year. latterday cocteaus makes great christmas music.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

and "fish" is like the best throwing muses song ever!

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 06:07 (twenty years ago)

Crushed is on 'Lonely Is An Eyesore', no?

Yes, and also on the bonus disc from the 1991 boxset, I think (Koogs?). I think "Dials", an instrumental version of "Oomingmak" from Victorialand and perhaps one other track were on that CDsgl.

I won't be buying this but I might ostentatiously fondle it for a bit in HMV, quietly chuckling to myself for long enough for the staff to understand that I've got it all on vinyl and hence think I'm cool.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

hello!

extra disk in that 1991 box set was:
Dials / Crushed / High Monkey Monk / Oomingmak (instrumental)

the other box made perfect sense at the time (i had none of the singles then apart from iceblink luck) and the new one, er, doesn't. Cherry Coloured Funk is lovely though.

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

(ha, that information came from: http://www.vamp.org/Gothic/Text/cocteau-discog.html )

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

By "virtually", you mean to leave a loophole for that excellent Throwing Muses song, I am most sure ;)

Actually, yes. heh.

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Ah, yes - "The High-Monkey Monk", which was also on a Melody Maker comp in 1990 or so. The "Oomingmak" instrumental was the closing credits music on the Lonely Is An Eyesore video comp. Which makes "Dials" the rarest of all Cocteaux trax, fact fans*!

(*Probably not, really; it'll be that 1980 demo track "Smashed on Strongbow").

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

so i picked this up; worth it for the packaging alone and I got it for a mere $30. Nice to finally have the Milk and Kisses era b-sides which I never actually owned; the rest of the tracks sound great, which makes me rethink, slightly, my decision to not buy any of the album remasters which the terrible reviews made me avoid.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 12 December 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

i can't part with my ep box yet, though

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 12 December 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

so the alternate versions aren't anything to worry about; pearly dew drops sounded the same to me, didn't even notice other than hearing some percussion bits more clearly; aikea guinea does sound different but equally good, i think there might be one more vocal track on it than the original. also, the remastering on these is excellent.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 17 December 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

which makes me rethink, slightly, my decision to not buy any of the album remasters which the terrible reviews made me avoid.

The Curse of Ott...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 17 December 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Oh god. I just saw what the sleeve for this looks like upthread. I think if I saw that up close and personal in a music-buying establishment I would not be able to control myself.

Halloween Spooky Party Hints! (Bimble...), Saturday, 17 December 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

I picked it up as a holiday gift for someone today. It's MUCH more compact than I was expecting. I went hunting for it in the actual box-sets section of Newbury Comics and discovered it sitting plainly in the regular Cocteau Twins rack, no thicker than a standard CD case.

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Sunday, 18 December 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

I would like this, I think.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 19 December 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I have attempted to order it, but I don't think I'll get it. I think I will get the old "out of stock" email in a couple of weeks.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

unlikely.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

It is "unavailable" in most places. Mind you, serves me right, I wasn't much bothered until I saw it was sold out everywhere.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

it would only be unavailable because stores haven't ordered it. it's definitely not out of print, nor will be anytime soon.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I got it from Amazon UK

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

As predicted:

Hello

Thank you for placing your order with with us here at CD WOW!

We are writing to inform you that we have exhausted all stock of
Lullabies to Violaine: Singles and Extended Plays (4CD Set) THE COCTEAU TWINS
and will not be receiving any further stock of this title for the
foreseeable future.

We have now cancelled your order and will instruct the payment provider
to process a full refund back to your card.

We hope that you will accept our apologies for the inconvenience
caused. We look forward to assisting you again in the future.

Kind regards

Just as well really.

I also had a quick trawl round for it last night and found out that Selectadisc is now Sister Ray. Is this a countrywide phenomenon?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

Looks like the box itself was an actual limited-edition run or 15,000 and even the 4ad store is out of them. But the tracks will be available in two 2-cd sets in Spring 2006 it says here:

http://www.4ad.com/cocteautwins/news/~cocteau-twins---/

matt2 (matt2), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's why I'm not too stressed about missing the full set -- I'd have love to have sprung for it but money was tight this month.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

It was still £17 on Amazon when I posted that link, up to £44.99 now.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

yeesh I should have bought some more

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

Ah, so you have an extra you're willing to sell at cost? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

no i wish

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

It's on sale at Newbury Comics for $31.99, Bostonians.

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

It was still £17 on Amazon when I posted that link, up to £44.99 now

That's where I ordered it, but they just hadn't taken it down yet (as is often the case with those Hong Kong people).

The first two CDs is better for me anyway.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

lordy!
i ordered it on the 4ad site last week for £20 but was a little alarmed that the shop is closed 'til the 10th of jan(!!!!)
the order went thru alright (fingers crossed!)

keefus (keefus), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
Attention attention -- Amoeba Records in LA still has a slew of copies of the full four disc set priced at $32, as I discovered to my surprise and delight today.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 00:03 (twenty years ago)

As much as I'd love this, it's hard to seriously consider, given that I have the 1990 box and Otherness..

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 02:30 (twenty years ago)

As much as I'd love this, it's hard to seriously consider, given that I have the 1990 box and Otherness..

It really comes down to your fetishistic need to own the Fontana-era B-sides, then. But I've had this whole Milk and Kisses argument 1,000 times on here... :-)

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 04:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I'm with TeenIdol, this box set is a bit pointless for me seeing as I have the original one, most of the post-4AD singles, and the original Volume comps that Frosty the Snowman &c were on.

Unless I happen across it for $30 or $40 in JB Hifi, then maybe I will get it, but really whats the point?

OMG. I'm not a Cocs completist anymore. I'm... getting OLD. *wibbles lower lip*.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 05:30 (twenty years ago)

Also Myke what are you on re Lonely is an Eyesore, man! The whole album is wonderful! Well, um, ok maybe "Hot Doggie" could have been left off, but yeah.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 05:31 (twenty years ago)

the cd eps are annoying though if you don't have a cd changer.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 06:16 (twenty years ago)

That is very true, and always frustrated me to be honest which is why I recently ripped the lot to mp3. Admittedly it would be nice to have it all compressed into 4 cds instead of 10, but unless it was cheap, its just doubling up for me now :/

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 08:09 (twenty years ago)

Admittedly it would be nice to have it all compressed into 4 cds instead of 10

I was perfectly able to fit it onto two, actually!

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 10:43 (twenty years ago)

Well I've been listening to it at work here -- the alternate versions for "Pearly Dewdrops Drop" and "Aikea-Guinea" really aren't all that different from the earlier ones, what variations there are are slight. The remastering is pretty good but really only came into its own with "Pink Orange Red" -- those opening guitars sound absolutely amazing now!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:16 (twenty years ago)

better snatch that shit, we're all out now.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 19:29 (twenty years ago)

You can now pre-order the non-limited versions from Amazon for £11.99 each. I am torn between going for both or just getting the first one.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:18 (twenty years ago)

Now put back to March 20th. Vol 1 down to £10.99 though.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 26 January 2006 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Amazon UK have the 4CD version up for sale again, this time at £15.99. Surely some mistake? I ordered one anyway.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 08:13 (twenty years ago)

the fabric the cover is made of is delightful

rizzx (rizzx), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 11:00 (twenty years ago)

I think the one that's been relisted doesn't have the "limited edition packaging" though.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 11:27 (twenty years ago)

I got this at Xmas - I'm surprised how great some of their later stuff is. I'd lost interest when those recds came out originally. Violane has sort of *powerchords* albeit in a diffuse way.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 11:50 (twenty years ago)

Not bothered about the packaging, I'd only end up using it as a hanky :-(

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 12:25 (twenty years ago)

I bought the BBC thing "to tide me over" but I don't really like it very much. Not enough to listen to it all the way through, in fact. Sounds quite mundane and Siouxsie-ish. What was teenage me thinking?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 13 February 2006 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Uh? The BBC thing is what got me back into the CTs. The versions of the early stuff are solid enough, but the 90's stuff is spectacular! As often with Beeb stuff, the lack of time for farting around removes some layers that the artist relies on as a style-crutch (here : diffuse curtians of flange and delay) and allows you to hear what's really going on.

Mundane and Siouxsie-ish? These words do not go together.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 13 February 2006 11:18 (twenty years ago)

I think the flange is what I'm missing - the otherworldliness. (Is that one word?) So it's sort of alarming to hear what's really going on. I say mundane because I previously thought it sounded like nothing on earth. At one point it sounds a bit like Yossou N'Dour. I haven't given it much of a chance yet though.

I suppose listening to stuff you used to like is a bit like "never meet your heroes". Well, for me at least.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 13 February 2006 11:46 (twenty years ago)

-- PJ Miller (pjmiller6...), February 13th, 2006.

musette and drums, last track disc 1 is good (from whistle test or same?), check that one out. but yeah yr right; dead disappointing the beeb sessions album.

piscesboy, Monday, 13 February 2006 15:47 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking I might change it for some "proper" albums instead - Treasure, Vickyland and Bluebell Pub.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 13 February 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I don't get much out of the BBC sessions either, but I haven't really given them a fair chance. I bought it thinking I would love it, considering they're one of my favorite groups, but I listened to it once and didn't think it was all that great. Most of the songs sounded just like the album versions, and the earlier material didn't interest me all that much; it didn't have that specific sound of their later material.

Lee is Free (Lee is Free), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Have been listening again. I was enjoying the instrumental track Otterley until it dawned on me that the underlying tune could be the soundtrack to an Eric Morecombe romantic interlude in That Riviera Touch.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 10:35 (twenty years ago)

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 11:16 (twenty years ago)

Uh? The BBC thing is what got me back into the CTs. The versions of the early stuff are solid enough, but the 90's stuff is spectacular!

Astonishingly OTM.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 11:26 (twenty years ago)

I have this lovely cd box. The packaging is so touchable. I was a 4AD fanatic when a kid and have heaps of Cocteaux vinyl, but little from the major label. They continued to write some lovely songs. Rilkean Heart I don't remember, but it's gorgeous.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
I now have this boxset. I bought it in Spain for just under 30 euro.

I am enjoying listening to it.

I was perhaps a little hasty about the BBC thing, but still.

I hadn't heard these records for a long time, but I could spot the differences in the alternate versions. I would have preferred the originals. I miss the fade-in, but still.

The packaging is made of what I can only describe as slightly clammy cardboard. I thought it would be some kind of cloth. It is very toucahble, but I am not touching it in case it gets grubby.

Amazon, meanwhile, have told me they need a further 4 - 6 weeks to get it. I am leaving the order open, just to see what happens - nothing, I suspect.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 27 March 2006 06:50 (twenty years ago)

this is now available as two seperate cds

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 27 March 2006 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Two separate two-CD sets, to be pedantic.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 March 2006 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Yes, the 2CD sets look nice too. I thought they would be plain. I would be interested to know how many more copies of set 1 they sell than set 2.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 06:29 (twenty years ago)

I got my hands on this and it's really quite nice, especially the 4AD aspects of it. I'd only heard 3 of their LPs until now, and this grand collection has really made me think better of the band than I had previously.

Harrison Barr (Petar), Saturday, 1 April 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 13 April 2006 08:25 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
I was lucky enough to find one of these sets today. There were quite a few of the two 2-disc sets there as well, and just one of the 4-disc sets.

Does anyone know how "limited" the boxsets are?

van igloo (van smack), Friday, 28 April 2006 23:34 (twenty years ago)

10,000 copies, apparently.

Lotta Continua (Damian), Saturday, 29 April 2006 10:29 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

Still one of the best repackagings out there.

"Sugar hiccuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup!"

Ned Raggett, Monday, 2 November 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)

I <3 my singles box

CharlieS, Monday, 2 November 2009 23:28 (sixteen years ago)

yeah having *everything* by them that's not on the albums in 1 place was a genius move. it pretty much IS everything isn't it? i mean every offcut, compilation track, instrumental etc?

piscesx, Monday, 2 November 2009 23:39 (sixteen years ago)

Actually not -- "Millimillenary" and the various cuts on the bonus EP with the original box set are missing.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 2 November 2009 23:45 (sixteen years ago)

oh? wow i could have sworn 'crushed' 'dials' and the 'oomingmak instrumental' were on it. i wonder why they aren't.

i wonder also what happened to the reunion in the end. i'd rather see them reform than just about anyone else.

piscesx, Monday, 2 November 2009 23:51 (sixteen years ago)

There's a story behind that...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 2 November 2009 23:54 (sixteen years ago)

This is simply an EPs boxset, covering all the individual releases from '82 to '96 (with a bit of cheaty revisionism in including "Orange Appled", which never came out in the UK, I don't think - Love's Easy Tears was a three-tracker over here). It would've been nice to tie up all the loose ends and gather the tracks from NME/MM comps, the 1991 boxset bonus disc, etc, but I s'pose it just didn't fit the brief.

Michael Jones, Monday, 2 November 2009 23:59 (sixteen years ago)

ah yeah that explains my confsuion i knew one of the odds n extras was on there somehwere.

jeez... i feel sorry for the Coachella guy who was promoting the reunion to that stage.

piscesx, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

So... what exactly would be the tracklisting for the bonus 5th disc of non-lp stuff not collected therein?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 00:32 (sixteen years ago)

Dials] (CT 1 CD)
10-1 Dials 2:39
10-2 Crushed 3:17
10-3 The High Monkey-Monk 3:07
10-4 Oomingmak (Instrumental) 2:43

http://www.discogs.com/Cocteau-Twins-Singles-Collection/release/330647

sleeve, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 00:39 (sixteen years ago)

and that is the tenth disc

sleeve, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 00:39 (sixteen years ago)

Off the top of my head...

Millimilenary (NME single, collected on The Pink Opaque in '85)
Dials (1987-ish track? Only in 1991 boxset)
The High Monkey-Monk (1987-ish, on 1990 Melody Maker comp)
Oomingmak instrumental (though, y'know, it's only an instrumental; features as the closing credits music on Lonely As An Eyesore video comp)
Crushed (on Lonely As An Eyesore)

Anything else?

(xp think GMcB-B was asking what would go on a 5th disc if Lullabies To Violaine was expanded to include all non-album stuff)

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 00:42 (sixteen years ago)

oh ok

sleeve, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 00:43 (sixteen years ago)

Lonely IS An Eyesore. Jeez. Sorry, Kristin.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 00:43 (sixteen years ago)

i wonder what else was on those Gigantic tapes that the melody maker did? i'm sure a blog or torrent has them all up somewhere. they seemed to be the very badge of indie cred when ever i saw them at some older friend's house or whatever. man that was a long time ago.

piscesx, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 01:04 (sixteen years ago)

aha
Gigantic http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=578274
Gigantic 2 http://www.discogs.com/Various-Gigantic-2/release/1748233

man just looking at the font of the first one makes me mental nostalgic.

piscesx, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 01:08 (sixteen years ago)

i have a cd version of gigantic 2 floating about somewhere..

quaq quao, sweetie (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 01:16 (sixteen years ago)

Two more:

"Need-Fire" from the Judge Dredd soundtrack album
"Touch Upon Touch" from the Volume 17 compilation

Hideous Lump, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 05:57 (sixteen years ago)

"Orange Appled" did come out over here, it was on a Melody Maker giveaway single.

I thought I could make it work because you look a bit like a man (aldo), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 07:57 (sixteen years ago)

True, but it wasn't on the original 4AD single Love's Easy Tears, which is how it's presented in both the 1991 boxset and 2005's EP comp. I think it was tacked on there for US CD-single release some time later. I dunno, I should probably Google this, shouldn't I?

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

I think it was tacked on there for US CD-single release some time later.

Yup, that's how I originally heard it via the brief time Relativity distributed some Cocteaus releases pre-Capitol.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

Ned it's such a tough call, is "Orange Appled" their signature track? Just because it's so obviously one of those creative explosions captured to tape quickly, it's so honestly *them* and pre-songcraft...YOU TELL ME.

cee-oh-tee-tee, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

Uh...it's all right?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 18:04 (sixteen years ago)

And he gives me the high-hat...

cee-oh-tee-tee, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 18:12 (sixteen years ago)

> i have a cd version of gigantic 2 floating about somewhere..

hope it plays better than mine 8) (is probably the worst case of coppering i've seen)

my tape of the first one got chewed in the player as well. jinxed.

koogs, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 18:52 (sixteen years ago)

boxset bonus disk now a common-as-muck amazon download btw

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cocteau-Twins-Singles-Collection/dp/B001MXEERY/ref=sr_shvl_album_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1257274426&sr=301-4

but no lullabies to violaine volume 2 available digitally which means i'm still missing those last few tracks (but not much)

koogs, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

hope it plays better than mine 8) (is probably the worst case of coppering i've seen)

most of it does, i think when i last played it the end of the birdland track was fucked up. no great loss tbh
