new batch of 33 1/3 books

I noticed they've recently published ones on Kick Out the Jams, Murmur, Low, Endtroducing... all albums I love. Anyone read any of these? Are they any good? I've read one of this series that was really good (Piper At The Gates of Dawn), and one that was pretty dud (OK Computer).

James Russell, Friday, 30 September 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

The editor is calling for submissions...

http://33third.blogspot.com/2005/09/let-games-commence.html

jz, Friday, 30 September 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

I really like the idea of this series, but unfortunately I've not been too interested in most of the albums being written about. Maybe the new submissions will change that.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 September 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Interestingly, someone from the publishers has just posted to Momus's livejournal, inviting him to write one of these:

http://www.livejournal.com/users/imomus/141909.html?replyto=4274517

jz, Friday, 30 September 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Hah well that won't make me more interested.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 September 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Cheers for the heads up, jz, I just sent in a list of proposed ideas. I'm not holding my breath, but ya never know, right?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 30 September 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Are all the people writing these at least somewhat well-known or previously published? I mean, not any average person can get assigned one of these, right?

Christian, Friday, 30 September 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Christina, with that sort've self-defeating attitude, how do you expect to get anywhere in life? There's nothing stopping you from sending in a proposal. Experience and clips would probably help, but inspiration and enthusiasm can sometimes take you a long way to! Give it a shot -- nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

whoops, ChristIAN.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Is Momus going to write about one of his own albums? That actually might be pretty interesting.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Maybe Christina would have a better chance than Christian?

the pinefox, Friday, 30 September 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Alex is right enough, but it sure helps to have something under your belt.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

I sent in four ideas, got positivish maybes on two of 'em. I'm in for the second round of pitching in November.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Friday, 30 September 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

i want Momus to write about Little Red Songbook or Happy Family's Man on Your Street... or maybe Circus Maxmimus

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Friday, 30 September 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

I suggest a new series of books writing about our favorite 33 1/3 books.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 30 September 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

hmmm... Anyone got a list of the ones that have been done already? I might send in a proposal for a Britpop album, maybe Blur.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 30 September 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Should be right there on the blog.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 September 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

"And not to come across all Cher or anything, but these may well end up being the very last books in the series, so let's hope they're good'uns."

Heh, somebody please pitch a Cher album - the original Half Breed, or Foxy Lady perhaps.

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 30 September 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Yes, the one on Bowie's Low is excellent.

doug e, Friday, 30 September 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

seconded on Low, really well done

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 30 September 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

I like Ott's book *hides*

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 30 September 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

"I suggest a new series of books writing about our favorite 33 1/3 books."

Surely a series of concept albums would be more appropriate?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 30 September 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

I propose a new series of television shows about our favorite concept albums about our favorite 33 1/3 books about our favorite records, which are all, in one way or another, about our favorite subject, and that my friends, is love.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 30 September 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

Low thirded, Hugo Wilcken did a great job.

willem (willem), Friday, 30 September 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

I wrote one for the winter crop, on Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over The Sea." Here's some info about it, for anyone interested:

http://lostinthegrooves.blogspot.com/2005/06/neutral-milk-hotel-33-13-book.html

Kim Cooper, Sunday, 2 October 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

"I propose a new series of television shows about our favorite concept albums about our favorite 33 1/3 books about our favorite records, which are all, in one way or another, about our favorite subject, and that my friends, is love."

These would need to be based on the stage adaptations of the radio plays, obv.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Sunday, 2 October 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

'Murmur' is a great read. I'm looking forward to the one on 'Low'. Strange they haven't done a Dylan yet, I can imagine a brilliant 'Blonde on Blonde' or 'Blood on the Tracks'.

dimitri_, Monday, 3 October 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

Probably people are afraid of trodding on Greil's territory. He sorta did one with Invisible Republic.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 3 October 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Haha, the list of artists pitched in the latest round is up on the blog. More than 160 pitches! OMG!

So this bump is for those who pitched to fess up, and to allow others to guess which of the artists they pitched. I'm in there. (Hint: it's one of the artists that is pitched more than once.)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Heh, I've pitched for something also pitched by someone else. Be interesting to see if either of us get it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

I pitched.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

OMG Ned we both pitched Iron Maiden WTF???

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

HELLS YEAH.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

seriously Ned I guess Wire for you.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

i fucked up my submission deadline. oh well.

dabnis coleman's ghost (dubplatestyle), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

ned's was: Limp Bizkit

dabnis coleman's ghost (dubplatestyle), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

Matt and Jess are both correct, 'correct' meaning 'wrong.' (But Jess is having a funny.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Drew I don't know you very well or your tastes...Aphex Twin maybe? Or Throbbing Gristle? I DO NOT KNOW, SORRY.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

I'll take the mystery to my grave . . .

So how many books are they going to do out of that heap of 160?

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Drew = Eno?

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Drew = Eno?

GET EQUIPPED WITH OBLIQUE STRATEGIES (ex machina), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm hoping 140. Daddy needs a new pair of Shoes.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

I was going to guess the Minutemen for Matt, actually.

A very small amount, I hear, will be selected -- maybe as few as five? So I'm keeping my expectations way low for my pitch -- I've made my best effort and I hope it works, but I need to be realistic!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

DREW = ENO???

dabnis coleman's ghost (dubplatestyle), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Ned, you are OTM, if "OTM" stands for "Officer Tragically Mental." By which I mean you are R-O-N-G. But I thought about it!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

matt = cafe tacuba or i'll eat my hat

dabnis coleman's ghost (dubplatestyle), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Uh, guys, Matt DID say it was one of the artists for whom there had been multiple pitches.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Better stock up on your Fedora Helper, Jess old bean!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

:-O

dabnis coleman's ghost (dubplatestyle), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

also I love how you're plural now Jess

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

ned you act like i read whole threads

dabnis coleman's ghost (dubplatestyle), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

One of mine was also pitched by two other people. I was sole pitcher for the other.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

ned you act like i read whole threads

I love you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

So Ned is Depeche Mode, right?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Alex wins!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

I'll second the endorsement of the Murmur book by J Niimi. I've been listening to that album for years, but Niimi did his homework on the recording sessions and discovered things I hadn't noticed. Like the fact that Mitch Easter doubled up Mike Mills' bass lines with an occasional piano chord. It's the sort of sonic detail I missed until reading the book, now I *can't* not hear it.

James, Friday, 2 December 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

Steely Dan for pdf, I guess.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

We were able to pitch two? FUCK.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

Albums I almost pitched: De La Soul Is Dead, Parallel Lines, Hejira, Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome, Juju Music, Jailbreak.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

a funkadelic book would have been a good pitch and a sinch to write

dabnis coleman's ghost (dubplatestyle), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah but I didn't think they would go for it, based on sales / popularity / name recognition / etc.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

We were able to pitch two? FUCK.

Yeah, Phil had mentioned that to me a while back. I considered it but never decided offhand what a second choice would be.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Yeah but I didn't think they would go for it, based on sales / popularity / name recognition / etc.
But that is the one I would most like to read. **sigh**

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Yeah well Phil shouldn't be such a tight-lipped SOB in future. I'd tell him to his face but we'll probably never meet. On the other hand, we would both totally rock out to Slipknot and Natalia LaFourcade.

Oh and Ken: I almost have a story about that but I typed it out and it was too pathetically boring. But yeah.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

That's too bad. For my part, I just saw the bright side in that I can go home and continue reading Hit Me, Fred.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Drew = Killed by Death Vol II

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

I hope somebody does a book about "There's A Riot Going On". I would love to read that.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 2 December 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

(xpost)That's the one of the only suggestions I would be interested in reading about haha.

Oh yeah that too!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 2 December 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

I pitched TG. Dude upthread has me dead to rights.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 2 December 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

I pitched Gaucho and From Elvis In Memphis. I briefly considered pitching Tales From Topographic Oceans and ...And Justice For All, but decided I didn't have enough to say about either of those albums.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Friday, 2 December 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

a funkadelic book would have been a good pitch and a sinch to write

I pitched both Funkadelic and Maggot Brain. Neither made the cut.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 3 December 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

Well, I know that David Smay was one of the two pitchers of Tom Waits ("Swordfishtrombones"). I read his proposal and found it very compelling. And Greg Trout of MagnaPhone Magazine pitched the Dream Syndicate's "Days of Wine and Roses," which is a great book waiting to be born.

That list is some serious competition. I'm glad I was in a previous batch when even if there were a lot of entries, at least I didn't have to read them all on the editor's blog and sweat!

Good luck to all you potential 33 1/3-ers. Mr. Barker is a fine editor, so if you get the assignment, that aspect will be a pleasure.

-Kim, whose Neutral Milk Hotel 33 1/3 book came out this week, only to be eclipsed by the discovery of the Monroe House demos...

Kim Cooper, Saturday, 3 December 2005 07:52 (twenty years ago)

c'mon Avalanches!

etc, Saturday, 3 December 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

That was my pitch and lemme tell ya, I sooo doubt it's gonna happen.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 3 December 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

I really wanted to pitch Blur's Great Escape and/or Aphex Twin SAW2, but I missed the deadline as I had a big job interview around that time. Still, I got the job so at least I did something right.

Carl Handwriting (dog latin), Saturday, 3 December 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

Miles Marshall Lewis wrote the There's a Riot Goin' On one, it's coming out in the next batch. There was an excerpt of it on the blog.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 3 December 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

I pitched Willie Nelson. RHS is the obvious one for him, and 2 other people pitched him, so im fucked.

anthony easton (anthony), Saturday, 3 December 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

I pitched, and I'm still shocked at what I ended up pitching...I was gonna pitch Zappa (well, the Mothers anyway) and ditched that at the last second.

don weiner (don weiner), Saturday, 3 December 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Somebody pitched Arcade Fire? Was it a choice between them and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 3 December 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

well, TWO people pitched the Afghan Whigs.

don weiner (don weiner), Saturday, 3 December 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

is this conducted like a public auction? potential readers vote??

weird. anyway good luck everybody.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 3 December 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

i hope the yes book gets picked

brother of the harvest, Saturday, 3 December 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

me too, but not over me!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Saturday, 3 December 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

I wanna see the SST kids like Husker Du and the Minutemen make it. Also: fuckin' Wu-Tang Clan!!! Of course not over Ned and the Gang.

regular roundups (Dave M), Saturday, 3 December 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

There's one in particular I'd really like to see it, namely Martin M.'s proposal for the Flaming Lips. He's proposed it as a graphic novel, and he's an excellent artist -- it would be a very well deserving entry.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 3 December 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

In the torrent of vocational uncertainty that has engulfed this month for me and the fact that the Mrs. is pregnant again, I'm sad to say that I had to stand down from submitting an official to pitch to Continuun (which they very nicely had invited me to). Maybe next time...if there is a next time. Nobody do the first Killing Joke album, ok? thanks.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 3 December 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

I thought for sure you'd be pitching the Killing Joke so it's one that I crossed off my pitch list, Alex.

(congrats on the impending babe; we just got our third!)

don weiner (don weiner), Saturday, 3 December 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

I pitched The Stooges Fun House.

Mad props to whoever pitched Killed by Death Vol. 2! Maybe it wz Kugelburg himself.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Saturday, 3 December 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

I pitched Uncle Tupelo and Crowded House. Right into the garbage, both of them.

dimmy wit, Saturday, 3 December 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

I couldn't believe no one had suggested Fun House prior to this round. Good luck with that, Raw Patrick.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 3 December 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and thanks a lot, Don.....cheers to you as well!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 3 December 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

I would really love to see Fun House, Enter the 36 Chambers and Maggot Brain get picked. Are they that unlikely? Seems like there would really be a market for a Funkadelic book (as lots of people are rediscovering them lately), but I guess I don't know who's really buying these things...

Sonny, Saturday, 3 December 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

who pitched Wu Tang?

Rizz (Rizz), Saturday, 3 December 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Do they ever do greatest hits albums? Or various artist comps? If not, why not?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 3 December 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

They did ABBA, Gold, though I haven't read it.

My proposal's on the list. It's an album from 1975 and anyone who's seen me gush on other threads probably knows which band already. The two I considered, but backed down from, were the Monkees' Headquarters and Terence Trent D'Arby's Introducing the Hardline.

But damn -- that Flaming Lips illustrated novel sounds like a GREAT idea! I hope it happens!

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 3 December 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

I like the idea of books on various artist compilations... Nuggets & No New York would be obvious ones.

This would be great, too...

Not trying to be sycophantic here, but hooray for Drew - that sounds like an intriguing prospect. Geeta's too. Pick of the bunch, I'd say.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:15 (twenty years ago)

Carl Wilson on Celine Dion!!?!

sean gramophone (Sean M), Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:18 (twenty years ago)

Someone else make the "worst slash ever" joke, I'm tired.

"69 Love Songs" by LD Beghtol

Isn't he singing on this?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:24 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure he is. After briefly thinking about it, though, I don't see why it would be a problem.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Congrats to the ILXors with new book deals!

sean gramophone (Sean M), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Well, I didn't make the cut, but they didn't give the discs I pitched to anybody else, either, so congrats to all who did make it. (Hayden Childs is a friend, and a very good writer; I recommend his book unreservedly. Might even read it myself, when it's done.)

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Congrats to all! Also looking forward to "The Dreaming"!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 26 January 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

A pity the other Depeche pitch didn't succeed as well!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 January 2006 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Or rather, in turn. You get what I mean. I hope.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 January 2006 16:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure he is. After briefly thinking about it, though, I don't see why it would be a problem.

i would assume that's the entire point of him writing about it, no? i look forward to that one.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:35 (twenty years ago)

the two albums on that list I want to read about matching up w/two writers I like = hooray! local music stores have been v/good with having these on display, even though the latest batch haven't turned up yet.

etc, Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:39 (twenty years ago)

this makes TWO hip-hop albums not counting Endtroducing. go rock!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 27 January 2006 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Kindof a weird tribe record to pick, too.

deej....., Friday, 27 January 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

you think?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 27 January 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

Isn't the idea to write about somehow underappreciated records? If so, that seems like a more apt choice than Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 27 January 2006 00:34 (twenty years ago)

Isn't the idea to write about somehow underappreciated records?

apparently in the case of them picking Celine Dion it is (though "underappreciated" probably only applies in the by-critics' sense there). otherwise, no.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 27 January 2006 02:05 (twenty years ago)

Oh wow, I'm glad to see a lot of writers that I know and/or like get set up with this stuff. I'm definitely interested in what Scott Plagenhoef, Carl Wilson, and Daphne Carr come up with for their respective albums.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 27 January 2006 02:41 (twenty years ago)

> otherwise, no.

This is what I get for gassing on without ever having read one of them there books.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 27 January 2006 02:48 (twenty years ago)

Thanks ilxors. I am stoked, and lots of those books look like good reads to me. This should be fun. I hope to live up to the prickly old Throbbing Gristle slogan "we guarantee disappointment" . . . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 27 January 2006 03:55 (twenty years ago)

Aim high. Oh wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 January 2006 04:00 (twenty years ago)

Judging from his pitch, David Smay's Waits book is gonna be a killer. I think he's one of the most provocative pop thinkers around, and it's about time more people got sucked into his world. (slightly biased cos we've edited two anthologies together... but it's true!)

Confidential to L.A. ILMers, I'll be reading from my 33 1/3 Neutral Milk Hotel book at Book Soup on 2/8 and Vroman's on 3/25.

Kim Cooper, Friday, 27 January 2006 05:38 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

Bump!

I love these books. Any ILMers got one coming out soon? I've bought/read the following:

Neutral Milk Hotel
David Bowie - Low
Celin Dion - Let's Talk About Love
Radiohead - OK Computer
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
R.E.M. - Murmur
Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA
The Rolling Stones - Exhile on Main Street

Bought but haven't started reading yet the Belle and Sebastian book by Scott Plagenhoef.

The blog showed something like 500 submissions were given a year ago, so I'm hoping more releases are coming up.

lol-ing at me being all tactful & guarded about the ATCQ approach there only for whiney to go instantly ham on it.

zvookster, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 02:07 (sixteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

so hey, got the nation of millions book in the mail this morning and it's v. good so far (one bus ride later). historical context, stuff on recording of the sample material w/ some focus on the important musicians and their intentions, incorporating & connecting meanings & connotations w/ other sampled tracks & into the PE tracks themselves, jumps in time that feel as natural & cosmic as a kubrick matchcut. style & content is reminiscent of the early (best) parts of Chang's book, researched storytelling w an elegance breaking into occasional eloquence, but with more of a sense of focus since all roads lead to one record. after only five pages at a natural break i paused just to look around me and feel pretty content w myself, always a good sign.

yeh it would be more in my comfort zone to rip on it for being corny & rong but what can i do. at 450 or so pp. it's on the thicker side for a 33 1/3 book i think? so hopefully it gets wack in the home straight & i can bring the h8. but my hands are tied, congratulation to whiney for &etc.

tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Monday, 12 April 2010 23:58 (sixteen years ago)

I can easily second this, finished this last night -- the book is fantastic, pulls together all the right sources, impeccably researched, tons of hard core details pulled together, fun to read, etc

nice to read you writing about something you're actually totally committed to, almost unrecognizable from the guy who posts endless bile to this board! had to say it, but serious congratulations on this book, you really did it right

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 01:22 (sixteen years ago)

listened to Millions twice while reading it, with detours to my CDs and youtube to check out things that were sampled, then went to Planet. back to Millions today

I remember reading through Rap Attack about 10 years ago and it was almost too frustrating, just endless lists of 7" tracks and b-sides I knew I was absolutely never going to find... then I re-read it again last year and about 80% of the tracks mentioned are all up on youtube... books like Whiney's that go through the sources and how / why they were used, they're golden beams of focused light in an age of distraction... going through the original elements and hearing what was done to them to turn them into Millions... on some records you hear the original ingredients and you're only disappointed but in this case going through the originals only makes the final album that much more astounding

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 01:52 (sixteen years ago)

damn, thanks, Milton. i am unbelievably psyched that you enjoyed it--and that you burned through it so fast! :D

if you guys don't mind me asking, where did you get your copies? I don't even know if all of them have shipped yet!
