this is most beautiful song i've ever heard.

"Walk Away Renee" was the perfect song the Beatles were always trying to write and never quite did.

Vs. the Four Tops - Walk Away Renee--GO!

Keiko, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Neither. Go for the Lotion vers.

JM, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Absolutely gorgeous 60's pop.

Pump Wellington, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

take the b-side and sample one bar of the first harpsichord riff then loop. funky as shit

ddd, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I like Desiree, that backing vocals are beautiful.

A Nairn, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Mod's talking crazy again. Go for the IDA version. (The Lotion version's pretty OK, though.) (And the original is unfuckwithable.)

David Raposa, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The lotion version doesn't touch the lotion version of Fly Me To the Moon. The four tops version is the worst. The good thing about the lotion version is it is MORE unintelligible and dreamy than the original. Good song allround, Desiree is incredible too though. As I've written elsewhere however, "She May Call You Up Tonight" is truly superb. I like the empty sidewalk crying her name, because that image is SO FUCKING POETIC.

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And the only song Ida ever did a perfect cover of is Eno's Golden Hour.

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Heard a few of the new Michael Brown/Steve Martin recordings yesterday. You will not believe how brilliant they sound. Steve's voice sounds exactly like it does on those early Left Banke records, while Michael's arranging genius is still all there too. A real treat is a-comin' your way.

harveyw, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Christ on a bike, Harvey - when are these recordings due out and where? I must know!

Rob M, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The recordings I heard are just demos, yet they sounds pretty complete & releasable to me as they are. One was just piano/vocal, another full band, another mainly strings. Can't remember any titles, sorry. (Apologies if this is all a bit vague, they were on in the background in a shop. I genuinely thought they were lost 60s recordings by the band, that's how good they sounded).

If you want any more info Rob, email me off board.

harvey williams, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Wrongo, Sterlingo. Try "Are You Tired of Me, My Darling?" (The Carter Family), or "Shoe-In" (The Secret Stars) in conjunction w/ "Golden Hours" for Ida coverage goodness. I would point you to an archived Rhubarb Cake show featuring said group in studio, but I don't believe it's actually archived.

"Walk Away Renee" is one of my favorite songs. It truly is beautiful and never fails to move me. For the curious...go to the Audiogalaxy website and search under Cyndi Lauper. There is a duet of this song that she did, with whom I don't know, that is quite lovely. You can download it there. I've always wanted my favorite band Cheap Trick to do a cover version of this song.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 7 August 2003 21:03 (twenty years ago) link

Has anyone heard those Stories records that Michael Brown was responsible for?

(P.S. I love this stuff but when I'm not actively listening to it, it always seems a little too fey for me. Also the lyrics for things like "Men Are Building Sand" are kind of embarrassing.)

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 7 August 2003 21:06 (twenty years ago) link

Let's also not forget "She May Call You Up Tonight"

If I'm not mistaken There's Gonna Be A Storm is not the best of, but the entire recorded works of the Left Banke, and, yeah, the second half isn't very good.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 7 August 2003 21:31 (twenty years ago) link

The Four Tops' version is magnificent.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 7 August 2003 21:40 (twenty years ago) link

the Stories' first record marries Brown's chamber pop feel with faces-style 70s boogie rock. Not really recommended, though a couple of nice melodies still shine through.

More than the Left Banke, I love Montage, especially the stripped down, pannicky version of Desiree!

Has anyone heard the Left Bake reunion record from the 80's/early 90's?

Odd query: Am I right in saying one of (the actors who played one of) Spinal Tap was in fact a member of Left Banke at some point?

Michael McKean was a member after they had their hit.

There is an interview with a couple of the original members of the Left Banke in one of the last issues of The Big Takeover.

i've always been fascinated by how incredibly short the verses in "walk away renee" are. they're so short they almost don't qualify as verses. they're more like pre-choruses or little mini-bridges. the fact that the first word of the song is "and" just heightens the effect -- that you missed the beginning and you're tuning in somewhere in the middle of the song. only later do you discover that there was, in fact, no beginning.

to my ears, the structure of this song is: pre-chorus/chorus/pre-chorus/chorus/etc.

it's kind of brilliant.

The comp is their first LP, "Pretty Ballerina/Walk Away Renee," on Smash, and their second one, which came out in '68, I believe, "Left Banke Too." Plus singles, etc. I think it's almost all great stuff, love "Desiree" and "Goodbye Holly," "Bryant Hotel," "Sing Little Bird Sing," etc. Very hothouse pop music. I actually like the words to "Men Are Building Sand" myself. "She May Call You Up" is a perfect song, very proto-power-pop. If I'm not mistaken, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith sings backup on "Too." Very few things say "'60s" to me like "Left Banke Too."

Not a big fan of Stories, though...just seems mannered and lacking in energy, without the saving grace of callowness found on the LB recordings. Michael Brown's dad, Harry Lookofsky, did the string arrangements on the early stuff--he was a big-time NYC arranger/session man...

You should download the masterpiece Black Cab from Jens Lekman/Rocky Dennis homepage (he released stuff on Secetly Canadian etc) It was the best single last year.

Another interesting cover of "Walk Away Renee" came from the Boston band Orpheus in 1968. They arranged it around the harmonies of "Never My Love" and, for reasons that elude me, opted to only sing the refrain several times, omitting the verses entirely. It actually kinda works, with the caveat that I'm a sucker for overblown overorchestrated pop.

Joseph McCombs, Saturday, 8 May 2004 14:40 (nineteen years ago) link

A trivial point I know, but one of the things I like about this is that the first word is 'and' - gives the impression of a continuation of something. I prefer the Four Tops version, as the singing is better (Levi Stubbs is one of my favourites), but I do understand the people who prefer the original, which is a great record too.

I only know "Walk Away Renee" and "Desiree," both of which I assume were written about the same situation (the names suspiciously rhyme, and I recall reading something about that). I'd love to eventually hear more of this band, seeing as how the former is among my 10 favorite songs.

And the acronym is "WAR."

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 15:55 (seventeen years ago) link

The liner notes to my old Rhino Left Banke comp say that "Walk Away Renee," "Pretty Ballerina" and "She May Call You Up Tonight" were written on the same day. This comes from the guy in the band (not Michael Brown) who was dating Renee at the time. Could be legend; I hope it's not.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

If it is legend it has repeated enough times at this point that it doesn't matter.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 16:23 (seventeen years ago) link

I would just like to know why it is unavailable; or whether it is in fact available, in some way. It's nice for all the people on the thread to talk about the music; well, I would like to get it, so I could talk about more of it, too. Unless everything except those 3 songs mentioned above is not really worth having?

the pinefox (the pinefox), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 16:31 (seventeen years ago) link

well, has anyone actually heard the lookofsky record? the guy in the link above says h.l. was the man on jazz violin, playing actual bebop. sounds just great...

i'm a big fan of the banke. "she may call you up tonight" is their best song, i always thought, though i quite love "left banke too" LP which has "goodbye holly" and "my friend today." just dark, dripping pop that sounds like nothing else. "men are building sand" is some kind of genius song, too--i mean, the decemberists will spend their whole career trying to do something as good. but, it's such callow music. it's kind of amateur night in a way, but that's what makes it so affecting, in that classic power-pop manner. funny to compare the l.b. and the beau brummels from the same period. there's something very very uptight about those left banke hits whereas "laugh laugh" is a bit less inhibited.

what a strange history, too. michael brown was gone by the time they did "left banke too," right?

haven't checked this, but you mean the "there's gonna be a storm" comp is OP? out-of-print seems a perfectly good term. and pinefox, i think the comp is worth having. a few things that are just too fucking fey, strained, mannered, but overall it's great stuff.

i have the orig. smash LP of "walk away renee" in good shape, and i remember my buddy's *dad* had a copy of "left banke too," this was years ago, that we taped and were way into back then...

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 16:37 (seventeen years ago) link

shit, amazon has the comp for $60.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 16:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes.

It's not worth $60. Either look for it cheap (it used to be a budget price comp for under $10 so I'm sure you'll find it eventually) or wait until it or something to replace it cycles back into print.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 16:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Certainly "Walk Away Renee" and "Desiree" are the pick of the crop but by and large everything on here is worthwhile. "She May Call You Up Tonight" and "Pretty Ballerina" deserve their plaudits above, and "I've Got Something On My Mind" is their equal. Much of what's left over is also enjoyable, "Barterers and Their Wives" and "Ivy Ivy" are two favorites. Some of the less-orchestrated selections are jumpy approximations of the R&B sound of the day and don't soar like the aforementioned tunes. Very surprised this is out of print, hopefully a superior box set is forthcoming. The Montage stuff is decent but for those jonesing on the signature Left Banke orchestration and super-smooth vocals you'll likely find it lacking.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 16:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I will second Montage - that record rules. Kinda a bit darker than the Left Banke and a wee bit more stripped down. Some of the Lefte Bank's "classical" moments come off as way syrupy.

That said I've been listening to the Raspberries a lot too. The David also has these kinda baroque pop elements as well. Good stuff.

I bought "There's Gonna Be a Storm" on GEMM years ago for like $25.

then, a few years ago, I sold it on eBay for $55. The fucker who bought it emailed me back and said that it had a scratch and he wanted his money back. Natch, I said he could have his money back as soon as he returned the disc. He ripped the disk to his hard drive, and then sends me back the disc and it is still in perfect condition (it was in perfect condition because I played it exactly one time when I ripped it to my hard drive, and he played it one time when he ripped it to his hard drive.)

I then sold it again on eBay for about the same amount.

Record companies are so stupid to let shit go out of print.

to my ears, the structure of this song is: pre-chorus/chorus/pre-chorus/chorus/etc.

it's kind of brilliant.

This comment made me want to listen and count. The verses are 8 bars long, which seems relatively normal (and is the same as e.g. "About a Girl" by Nirvana). But there is a sense of everything being there to set up the chorus. So maybe it's something in the way the melody and changes lead to the chorus that gives this impression?

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:26 (seventeen years ago) link

(I mean, lots of songs do have pre-choruses or 16-bar verses but 8 bars at a medium tempo surely isn't incredibly short. Not bringing this up to be pedantic. I am genuinely interested in what it is about the tune that makes the verses feel like short mini-bridges. Is it maybe also that there aren't that many words but they're held for a long time?)

I've played There's Gonna Be A Storm about once a week on average for the past two years.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:32 (seventeen years ago) link

There's a lot on There's Gonna Be a Storm I really don't like. Once I get past "I've Got Something on My Mind," I really only bother with "Desiree," "And Suddenly," "Goodbye Holly," and "Myrah." Having said that, since I don't think it's right for anything to be out of print, ever, in a digital age, I'll be happy to burn a couple copies if someone on this thread's in need.

And I'll also add, since this has become a more generalized Left Banke thread, that Susanna Hoffs and Matthew Sweet did a GREAT job with their cover of "She May Call You Up Tonight." If anything, even more convincing than the original, and I love that it works with either gender.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 00:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Jeff Reguil0n (Talent Explosion), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 00:47 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, susannah hoffs has some fine legs, man, but that version isn't a patch on the orig. left banke version. (the non-CD "I can see for miles" that sweet/hoffs did was just great, though.)

that comp isn't worth $60. as joseph mccombs says, it does kinda trail off a bit toward the end. but shit, I quite like it all except maybe "myrah" and a couple-three others. "give the man a hand" is good.

as for the foreshortened "walk away." well, how long is the track itself? 2:42.

The verses may not be wildly short but they're not long either. The chorus is a little long, with a defined ending. Perhaps most importantly, there's never a double verse.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 19:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, no double verse, exactly. Two bar intro, then the eight-bar verse then the chorus.

among the suberb left banke songs already listed is dark is the bark. spooky and a definite standout from the second half of their output.

i go back and forth on preferring the left banke and montage renditions of desiree - right now i'd pick montage, for the focus and propulsion. it's an incredible song. the instrumental version that montage did is also wonderful - it's piano, bass, drums, and sitar, leaving only the verse melody intact. the chorus is just piano emphasizing the original bass line, which makes the entire song.

the montage album is really great - the song grand pianist rivals the best of the left banke, for me, and tinsel and ivy, i shall call her mary, and the piano-and-wah-wah heavy instrumental thor and or are all solid.

For those who have heard it, what do you think of Linda Ronstadt and Ann Savoy's remake of "Walk Away Renee"? It's on their new album, "Adieu False Heart."

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 18 November 2006 13:29 (seventeen years ago) link

I reviewed "Adieu" for No Depression. Nice version, didn't bring a lot new to it. The record as a whole was a bit slow for my taste, but mighty sweet, they sing well. The great La. guitarist Sam Broussard, an acquaintance of mine and a fine man, plays on it.

(I wasn't saying the verses were long or anything, just that they're not actually "incredibly short" (fcc's words). They're on the short side of normal but they do feel shorter. I think it might be that the melodic phrases in the verses are long - 4 bars each, so there are just two of them.)

Sundar (sundar), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:24 (seventeen years ago) link

(The phrases in the verses of "About a Girl" - also a 2-bar intro, then 8-bar verses w/ no double verses - are 2 bars each, so he can get through 4 lines in a verse instead of 2.)

one year passes...

The butler opened the parlor door
I took my coat and approached the floor
A door opened at the top of the stairs
A sexy lady she was a-standing there
I stumbled and turned around to see
Her Evening Gown
Said yeah, Alright!

She said Forward your love was there
The light was on the jewels in her hair
The only sign gettin' down on my chest
I start to mumble on the way to address
I made the way up and down upon
Her Evening Gown
Said yeah, Alright!

(solo)
Oh...
Mmm-hmm, alright...

The door was on the touch of her feet
Her eyes were wide and her hands petite
I knew I didn't stand a breath of a chance
With all her will she gave me a glance
She won't throw me out, I turned around to meet
Her Evening Gown
Said Yeah, Wowwwwwww!

The butler opened the parlor door
I took my coat and approached the floor
A door opened at the top of the stairs
A sexy lady she was a-standing there
I stumbled in and turned around to see
Her Evening Gown

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 13:55 (fifteen years ago) link

yes, it's terrific, but lauren was right, way upthread, to put the extraordinary 'pretty ballerina' alongside it - in fact I think the latter wins, and is the greatest LB song I've heard.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 13:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Well we'll agree to differ there then. Interestingly, The Stories wrote one really great song ("Love Is In Motion") and didn't come close to writing another one as good - well, not as near to doing so as the Left Banke did in following their 'great song'.

Picked up the first lp (on vinyl natch) over the weekend. Even the lesser stuff on it is charming. It's a real crime that this and the other Left Banke material is so hard to get. I wonder why, when it seems like everyone and their dog is redoing 60s music, there hasn't been new reissue or at least an audiophile pressing of the debut. Rights holders: get yer ass in gear!

BTW, did that Michael Brown/Steve Martin reunion stuff that harveyw posted about upthread ever come out?

Pretty Ballerina and Walk Away Renee are near-perfect pop songs. Is the rest of this group's output worth investigating?

Found that import I linked to a few posts up on Ebay for a lower price and got it in the mail today. Surprise surprise it's a bootleg with no liner notes or credits outside of the bare minimum. Sounds ok, no needledrops--I assume it was ripped from There's Gonna Be A Storm. Some of the stuff from the second lp sounds kinda muffled and some of the first album stuff is in mono instead of stereo with no explanation why.

Handjobs for a sport (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 00:03 (thirteen years ago) link

I wonder why Sundazed didn't just reissue their albums as a twofer with the two non-album singles as bonus tracks, the way Mercury did with the oop single-disc There's Gonna Be a Storm collection. still, the liner notes and remastering job should be first-rate, so I'm not complaining too much.

every time you touch me (I get hives) (unregistered), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 01:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Bob Irwin (or whomever it was posting for Sundazed on fbook, usually it's him) replied to a similar query back when they made the initial announcement that the rights holder stipulated that the discs would not have bonus tracks. I guess the stray songs are still a sore point to someone.

The bootleg of the two albums that I have & wrote about upthread has the extras from There's Gonna... plus the mysterious outtake "Foggy Waterfall". The same label (Red Cap) did another twofer comprising the Montage album* and the 80s Left Banke album plus the Montage rarities and the Left Banke Coke ads.

*Apparently the Sundazed edition of this went OOP recently.

According to Wikipedia, the Stories followed about six months later. Not surprising anyone over here wouldn't know that: the Stories hit #1 on Billboard, Hot Chocolate didn't chart (but made it to #7 in the UK).

clemenza, Friday, 20 March 2015 14:34 (nine years ago) link

I'm from the UK but the song would have come out when I was 6 years old. & I've never been massively into the band Hot Chocolate.
Not sure if I've ever actually heard the Stories version. & haven't seen the writing credits or I'd've known, though they're both Browns so maybe I wouldn't.

But I was aware there was a Stories version that somehow related to Michael brown.

We’re deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Steve Martin Caro, lead singer for the Left Banke, it’s always brought us tremendous pride and joy to share so much of his art with you over the years. Our tone arms are now at half mast. The work of the Left Banke has long been an elusive holy grail for vintage pop fanatics. The legendary "baroque rock" combo's work ranks with the greatest American music of the 1960s, and remains beloved by discerning pop connoisseurs around the world. Out of print for decades and despite its longstanding unavailability, the Left Banke's music has attained an ever-increasing level of prestige over the years, and continues to exercise a powerful mystique amongst the group's legion of admirers. Thank you Steve for all the wonderful art you’ve brought into our lives. #stevemartincaro #leftbanke #baroquepop #walkawayrenee

I remember coming across this thread a long long time ago, way back when youtube.com was a brand new thing, in the olden times of 2007 before I'd ever heard this song. I looked it up because I was very interested in hearing what someone called the most beautiful song they'd ever heard. (I also did the same thing when someone here said the same thing about "Wichita Lineman." I'd never heard that before either, somehow.)

Anyway I remember hearing "Walk Away Renee" for the first time and liking it a lot not just because it's great but because it's a great thing brand new to me and therefore probably many others and therefore probably severely underrated. Upon reading the news in this thread today I listened to it again for the first time in a long time and still liked it a lot, and because I have free time to kill while I wait for my start date for my new job, I had a lot of the day today to sit around and listen to music. I listened to the whole Walk Away Renee/Pretty Ballerina album twice. It's great! And I've never heard it before. And being able to hear something great I've never heard before is exactly the sort of thing I've been using this board for for nearly the last twenty years.
