Hello, it's your old chum Brian Matthew here. Some of my mates at I Love Music have got together to decide on the best songs and albums from the 1960's. Hopefully there'll be something from my old chums, John, Paul, George and Ringo. If I'm really lucky perhaps something by The Swinging Blue Jeans. As we used to say let's see what's pick of the pops....

Aretha Franklin - (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman

Carole King's original is way better.

http://www.timeisonourside.com/lpBleed.jpg

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 16 July 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

Carole King wrote the song, but Aretha's is the "original" recording, three years earlier than Tapestry. And I think Aretha's is better, myself.

I will commence to drop a knowledge bomb. (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 16 July 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

This should be an interesting poll

Cunga (Cunga), Sunday, 16 July 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

Eagle eyed amongst you will have realised that Monkey Man should be 94=.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 16 July 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

Aretha Franklin - I say a Little Prayer

Gives me a good idea for a thread: "Songs ruined for you by horrible, horrible movies"

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 16 July 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

That Herb Alpert sleeve photo is the most hilariously bad thing ever.

A lot of my picks are showing up in the early going. Sorry I didn't write any blurbs, Billy.

I will commence to drop a knowledge bomb. (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 16 July 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn't the woman there in the picture his wife? Intresting poll so far BTW. Can't wait for the next segment.

79. Elvis Presley - Marie's The Name (His Latest Flame) (145 points, 8 votes)

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 22:47 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think the Lovin' Spoonful get enough credit. They put out some unbelievable stuff, but you don't hear about them very often.

musically (musically), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

Glad to see Marie's The Name make the list. One of The King's best.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 23:29 (nineteen years ago)

i just taught my mom how to use itunes, and she immediately downloaded the lovin' spoonful. not that song, though - "daydream" is superior. i hope it's on the list later on.

Emily B (Emily B), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 00:02 (nineteen years ago)

My favorite Spoonful is "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice," but I don't think it was even nominated for the poll.

Whitman Mayonnaise (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 00:33 (nineteen years ago)

My absolute favorite is "Summer in the City," which I think was nominated. My first CD ever was a Rhino Billboard hits of 1966 comp., and I'd listen to it over and over again. My other favorite that wasn't nominated IIRC is "Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind". Classics.

musically (musically), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 00:44 (nineteen years ago)

87. The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

I don't care if people say it's a tired old classic. If it came out today, as is, it would be my pick for song of the year. Eighty Fucking Seven Bull Shit

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 06:26 (nineteen years ago)

if "suspicious minds" isn't top 5 there's something wrong!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 06:41 (nineteen years ago)

Meh. Elvis was a hero to most but he never meant shit to me.

It's Rodney, currently unemployed! (R. J. Greene), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 08:12 (nineteen years ago)

hold on, when did we vote for all these? i think i must have not been paying attention

wogan lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 08:50 (nineteen years ago)

The "Here There & Everywhere" cover is fucking horrendous!
What's it say? Derek Taylor introduces The Beatles? Previously unavailable everywhere?
On what planet was this released?

A few of mine already up. Woulda thought "Look of Love" and "Marie's the Name" to be higher. And "Wonderful World" at 100?? Dear me. But that's the way it goes I s'pose.

Merryweather (scarlet), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 09:11 (nineteen years ago)

I think Look of Love was in my top 5. Possibly my favourite Dusty moment.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Thursday, 20 July 2006 09:35 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, so many songs that I figured would place higher being shown here. Will make for a more interesting poll though.

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 20 July 2006 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

Surprised "don't let me down" made the top 100. That either means its much more popular than I thought, or there are 98098348309 Beatles songs to come.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Thursday, 20 July 2006 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

I've been compliling a playlist of these songs (as I did with the 70's and 80's polls) and this, so far, has been fantastic.

And I second J.D on 'Suspicious Minds.'

musically (musically), Thursday, 20 July 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm surprised how few people voted in this poll, compared to the 70s and 80s. This has maybe 5% the respondents of the others.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 20 July 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 20 July 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

I'm surprised at how low the voter turn out seems to have been - especially compared to the 80's poll.

Holy x-post!

First Song/Music That Opened New Worlds Musically for You - Desmond Dekker-"The Israelites"
When I was 8. It sounded so other-worldly to me. And biblical, too. I had no idea what he was singing about. I didn't even know it came from Jamaica, I think I thought it was English, "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da"'s darker, weirder cousin. I imagined vampire chimney sweeps dancing across the rooftops. I wanted to hear strange records like this on Top 40 radio all the time."

http://www.ready-steady-go.org.uk/creation.jpg

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 21 July 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Huh, I've never heard of that band or song. Could someone give a capsule description?

Whitman Mayonnaise (Rock Hardy), Friday, 21 July 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

Hard edged Mod/Freakbeat band from Middlesex, big in Germany, virtual unknowns at home. 'Making Time' is a muscular Who/Yardbirds garage stomper, later stuff goes more for a soul/psychedelic feel. Disbanded by '68 but reformed in the 90's for an album on Creation records, where Alan McGhee got the name from.

I love how Yesterday is always considered the greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone's weekly "century in review" issue, but wasn't even nominated IIRC. With songs like Satisfaction and I Can See For Miles in the bottom half of this poll I am dying to see the top 10.

I know I'm an obsessive fan, but I'm pretty sure the great Desmond Dekker single is titled "Israelites," not "The Israelites," in JA, the U.S., and the UK.

I think the "the" was added to the subsequent album title, and to the sheet music, and then at some point I even think Dekker starting singing "Poor the Israelites" live instead of "Poor mi Israelites," as a sop to confused fans. More here:

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder if any jazz tunes will make it to the top 100, so far it looks like there's nothing but rock/pop/soul, as expected. Jazz will likely fare better on the album list. And "Girl From Ipanema" is probably the only Latin American tune to make it...

49. The Kingsmen - Louie, Louie (189 points, 8 votes)

http://www.andymartello.com/andyland/images/louierecord.jpg

The other classic (mistake) is "Louie Louie" (Kingsmen original) where the singer comes in several bars too early after the solo, then stops when he realises. By then the drummer has figured that something's wrong and try to 'cover up' the mistake with a ham-fisted drum roll. The singer then comes back in and off they go again!

"Sympathy" is brilliant if for nothing else than for the arrangement, which was pretty unique at that time--a heavy bass line w/ rhythm piano & congas/maracas and a total absence of any guitar (until the solo, which stabs you in the face). And the backing vocals rule.

Do yourself a favor and hear it right now. It's a pretty liberal interpretation of the original. (As opposed to Warwick's version extended for another 9 minutes.) Warwick's sounds like a breakup, Ike's sounds like a personal apocolypse.

Going further off-topic, but what the hell, isn't Ticket To Ride stupendous? That opening blast of sound, that guitar line, that hump- backed rhythm, those lyrics ("I*think* I'm gonna be sad, I *think* it's today yeah"). How much better this is than "I *know* I'm gonna be sad...". Lennon holds a tight line between self-pity and bullish arrogance("she oughta think twice, she oughta do right by me"). The Stooges, "I Wanna Be Your Dog". Not the middle or the end, either- the beginning. 29. Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues (230 points, 11 votes)

http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/vol17/issue26/screens.filmstories.gif

I agree with Noodles, but in a more positive way, which is to say that a meaning of those songs really is "Don't let us do your homework for you." And don't let other people get your kicks for you. And don't follow leaders. Strike another match and start anew. The highway is for gamblers. I drank a fifth of vodka, dare me to drive?
"Look out kid, you're gonna get hit" means "Look out kid, you're gonna get hit." I don't intend that as a wiseass comment. You ever been hit? Physically? Emotionally? That's what the song's about, among other things.

In junior high school I read the lyrics to "Subterranean Homesick Blues" (art teacher posted the lyrics and displayed student paintings inspired by them). The words seemed like nonsense to me. When I heard the song again, four years later, I knew exactly what they were about, ironically enough. I knew better than the guy who wrote them, as a matter of fact. He might have thought they were about drug busts in Greenwich Village (orders from the D.A.), but I knew that they were really about junior high school.

Don't be a bum, you'd better chew gum.

Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison/And the executioner's face is always well-hidden. (No man is an island, duh, but Dylan said it better than Donne. Or as David Johansen says, "Everything connects, and that ain't nowhere.") Look out kid, they keep it all hid. The home in the valley kills the man in the prison, by long distance, face hidden.

Play those three songs, imagine that you're the one singing them. And ask yourself not what the guy who wrote those words means by them, but what you mean by them. And write that down. And if you risk those words - your words - here, you'll get a friendlier response.

Has there ever been a band as perfect as the Shangri-Las? I don't think so.
There is never even a hair out of place. The lyrics are overblown yet totally spot on for teen angst and unrequited/requited gone bad love. The delivery is perfect - not even a trace of irony, just pure emotion with gorgeously unnoticable technique. And the arrangements and production... aaaahhh! Motorcycles in the studio, I'd like to see Stock, Aiken and Whateverman do some of that.

26. The Byrds - Eight Miles High (240 points, 10 votes)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000BXJFWU.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_V57016694_.jpg

Mark S IS "on the money" abt the Coltrane/Byrds connection - the main melody of '8 Miles High' is stolen pretty much wholesale from the JC track 'India' (you can find it on the alb 'Impressions' and compare and contrast.) Legend has it that Gene Clark and Brian Jones used to listen to 'India' all the time while touring together in the mid-sixties, and the melody just 'somehow' crept into '8 Miles High'. Funnily enough I was listening to 'Notorious Byrd Bros' the other day, and there's a bonus instrumental on the cd reissue called 'Universal Mind Decoder' that sounds quite a lot like Television - I know Verlaine listened to a lot of Coltrane/Jazz, so I guess that's the second 'puncture'...
As for the Byrds, Classic of course. Don't know of many other bands with at least four great songwriters - Gene Clark, McGuinn, Hillman and even Crosby back in the day - who could also sing, play, produce etc. Everything after 'Sweetheart of the Radio' is patchy, and DESTROY the terrible 'reunion' alb they made in the early 70s.

http://www.pharaohweb.com/Qmark/Qimages/qmarkepfr.jpg

I like Pinefox's point; but one thing to remember is that a lot that isn't sexy and subversive to 2002 (or that seems subversive in its indifference to being sexy) actually came across differently when released: "96 Tears" upset me so much that I almost got sick listening to it, the way ? said "Cry" in such a disgustingly contemptful way. A great song. I hated it; couldn't stay in the same room with it. Now an innocuous classic.

Oh yes, and songs like the previously discussed "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)". And Da Doo Ron Ron. And Then He Kissed Me. How can I get enough? What A Nice Way To Turn 17 was the reason for a whole relationship "Oh, G, I love you so..."

Classic for the songwriting, Carole King and Spector/Barry/Greenwhich. Bizarrely futuristic in the way that they swapped singers without a batted eyelid. Shall we have arguments about which was the best line-up? Or just accept them as the gorgeously generic product which Spector intended?

I'm going to go and listen to my best of the Crystals CD as soon as I stop shooting my mouth off online. Don't anybody start a taking sides: crystals vs. ronettes thread or my head would surely pop.

I respect Creedence for the way they unashamedly pilfer from old-school R&B in a way that doesn't make me feel embarrassed for everyone involved. I've never been a hardcore fan, but "Fortunate Son" is awesome. I imagine it would have been a very ballsy song to release at the time.

"Downtown" by Petula Clarke. My parents always had the oldies station on in the car when I were a nipper, this was on permanent rotation back then. Still sticks with me now, still think its an all-time classic.

16. The Velvet Underground - Sister Ray (306 points, 9 votes)

http://www.britannica.com/psychedelic/images/opsyroc053p1.jpg

Sister Ray:genius and wankery. SR is sublime noise, an uncompromising, unrelenting challenge. It manages to be heavy without being dumb + macho because of Cale's excellent organ playing + the polymorphously perverse lyrics. But SR is also a big disappointment. It is the only serious extended piece recorded in the studio by the original Velvets line-up(European Son is just a filler) and the band failed to show what they were truly capable of. They were let down by a number of factors : the technical limitations of amplifiers + recording equipment, the indifference of producer Tom Wilson + the overbearing ego of Lou Reed whose distorted guitar drowns out the other players. According to Cale + Tucker SR wasn't supposed to sound like that. Imagine a 17 minute track of varying moods + textures where you can hear everything each musician is playing. A track that veers through pop, rhythm 'n' blues + avant-garde drones. A musical piece where influences such as Ornette Coleman, LaMonte Young, Booker T + African drumming are actually audible. In my opinion the only band who have recorded tracks similar to what SR could have been is Can.

14. James Brown - Papa's Got A Brand New Bag (326 points, 14 votes)

http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/music_specials/img/james_brown.jpg

As far as changing music goes, the most important song ever, by anybody, is James Brown's "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," but that doesn't mean I wouldn't rather hear lots of relatively unimportant songs from the same year ("Where Have All the Good Times Gone?" "Till the End of the Day," "See My Friends," to name a few Kinks tunes).

Timbaland was part of a stream of similar doings coming up from down south, whereas when James Brown laid down "Papa," it was a sharp break from everything, from his own "Out of Sight," from various "Funky Broadways," he'd simply twisted the screw about 20 turns tighter.

Bob Dylan - Like A Rolling Stone (362 points, 11 votes)

http://www.searchingforagem.com/Pictures/LARS7NLFrontRed.jpg

I do think Luc (Sante) underplays some of Dylan's other strengths, things that went beyond the mashups and the images drawn from the unconscious. "Like a Rolling Stone" is good storytelling, the images basic allegory and metaphor (and where it gets wild it actually gets clumsy: the siamese cat is in the way, and the jugglers, clowns, and frowns trip over each other).

http://classic.motown.com/images/local/umgartists/204b9de3-c258-46e2-a4bd-800a2bc64985.jpg

I Heard it Through the Grapevine: I love how the song builds up...the slow, haunting intro, the drums, the tambourine roll,  the guitar licks, the brass (all Funk Brothers, natch), then the Marvin. The orchestral backing is so sublime that it has a life of their own, melding with Marvin's vocals, rivaling any duet partner he ever had.  Norman Whitfield's genius isn't limited to the musical background; the way he shaped Marvin's vocals in the song is likely what turned this song from a solid Motown hit to the Greatest Song Ever.  He had Marvin sing the entire song in his upper register, giving his voice a strained, pained inclination that makes you feel his agony.  Total perfection. - Musically

5. The Beatles - A Day In The Life (438 points, 15 votes)

http://www.johnlennon.it/beatles%20pics/beatles-ciao.jpg

How can this be anything other than classic? From the lyrics, the echo on Lennon's voice, the drumming, the rising string crescendos, the panting in the McCartney section, as mentioned up thread the ahh ahh Lennon section, how powerful the brass sounds as it comes out of that section, Mal Evans counting the bars, 'I'd love to turn you on'. It would be a great record regardless of when released but when put into the context of it being released in 1967 it's all the more amazing.
Surely there are few more astounding ways to end an album than Tomorrow Never Knows and A Day In The Life, again, especially regarding them in the context of the time they were released.

For all The Beatles don't need any more praise and it all gets a bit tiresome, sometimes they actually deserve it.

Recommend more songs like Wichita Lineman

Wichita Lineman is the greatest song ever made and here's why:

1. The descending base intro (played by Carole Bayer Sager apparently). Well, it's just perfect isn't it? a five note orgasm of the senses.

2. The imagery. there are only 37 different words in the whole of the song, Bob Dylan never created an image as evocative as this in his whole musical career of 3 and a half billion words.

3. The poetry of the thing. It's only possible comparison is Wordsworth's "Solitary reaper" for sheer poetic beauty.

4. Martin Carr from Boo radleys, Bill Drummond from KLF/K foundation and Bob Stanley from St ettienne (3 people with impeccible taste) all agree.

It's good to be back.hi everyone.

Singles like Heroes And Villains and Good Vibrations are extraordinary pieces. Try to listen to Good Vibrations afresh - forget the million times you've heard it, and notice how astonishing it actually sounds, how the different sounds are so gorgeously blended, sinuously moving in and out of the front of the mix. http://classic.motown.com/images/local/umgartists/8394c9d0-f118-4d5d-87b4-b30afca20ce5.jpg

1969 was the year man first landed on the moon, but more importantly, it was the year Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" jumped onto the airwaves. At the moment, I consider it the greatest song of all time. Everything about IWYB is absolutely genius; first, there's that descending piano, and then boom! The brilliant bass line compliments those smooth & sexy guitar licks, together commanding you to shake your ass. Wait, I forgot; there are shimmering strings, too! With the addition of a tambourine, IWYB reaches orgasmic levels. And when you don't think it can get any better, a prepubescent boy with a gorgeous voice starts singing about heartache.
Ludicrous! And what's better? You totally believe everything he is saying; neither JoJo nor Al Green could pull off this much emotion. It's so damn brilliant. Oh, and there's the climax where Michael does that crescendo ("all I want—all I need," etc.) and then follows it up with the craziest note ever ("oh, baby I was blind to let you GooOoOoOoO!!!"), causing every hair in the known (and unknown) universe to rise. - TapeStore

So, "Girl from Ipanema" and "Somethin' Stupid" didn't make it at all? Is it because everyone finds them worn out? They're still great tunes.

Seeing as how it hardly ever places as highly in other media, I'd say "Wichita Lineman" is the true winner here.

I'm baffled why people think "I Want You Back" is a surprising #1. I guess I don't think of it as a '60s song, but the idea of it finishing ahead of everything else in a poll seems pretty reasonable.

The only decent Jackson 5 song to qualify for the 60's (by a few weeks), and it makes it to number 1 in the poll. It's a cute tune but, whatever...

Nice job on the poll, Billy Dods. I wish more people would have voted. The 60's were the greatest.

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Saturday, 12 August 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

Obviously, when there's only 1 or 2 tracks to choose from a certain artist, they're likely to place higher than a band with 14 or 15 nominations.

The 60's were the greatest.

It's true.

its so camp, falsely sonorous

i always thot that it was such a queer, complicated, heartbreaking song, from a singer who had three careers before engaging in this urban metatorch...it reminds me of all that lonely, desperate crusing that i imagined happened (and happens) in cities in cold winter nites...sundar adn i were talking about it last week, and i love clarke, because im a fag

If any of you are paying subscribers to last.fm, I've tagged the results of the 60s poll (and the 70s and 80s polls), so you can listen to the personal tag radio and hear a playlist of many of the winning songs. Most of the songs were streamable, so it can provide you with hours of 60s goodness if you're interested.

Albums soon, or are they happening after nu-nu-ILX debuts?

Danny Aioli (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 26 August 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
What's the story?

Fastnbulbous (Fastnbulbous), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

Billy Dods said he's waiting on the status of ILX to get straightened out before starting the 60s albums results thread.

I haven't been on much lately. What is the status?

Fastnbulbous (Fastnbulbous), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

Waiting on news about whether we have to move to new hosting. I gather the code rewrite group has fallen into torpor since some code tweaks a few weeks ago reduced poxy fules and improved performance (today notwithstanding).

So was the albums part of the poll ever published?? Can't find it in search. I've been enjoying the 1965 albums by Them and the Sonics for the first time. I blame the non-appearance of this poll for not inspire me to do so sooner.

mascara and pies (a hoy hoy), Monday, 30 November 2009 22:56 (sixteen years ago)

the fact that the top TWO-HUNDRED lacks 21st Century Schizoid Man is probably the greatest crime in any of these polls ever

What?!??! LOL (xpost)

ILX Blob 59 (Tom D.), Thursday, 3 December 2009 17:48 (sixteen years ago)

Oh man, that just killed me! "96 Tears and Two Hangers"

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 3 December 2009 17:51 (sixteen years ago)

Pretty sure it wasn't like that in 2006.

go in go hard brother (Billy Dods), Thursday, 3 December 2009 18:02 (sixteen years ago)

That's the original single cover, doh! There's a reason they never became popular.

Tuomas, Thursday, 3 December 2009 18:05 (sixteen years ago)

I guess we all know what a Mysterian is now.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 3 December 2009 18:15 (sixteen years ago)

And I guess "?" is what's between the "mysterians"...

Tuomas, Thursday, 3 December 2009 18:16 (sixteen years ago)

if the mysterians are male genitalia then i guess captain scarlet...oh god, ban me

a. cole, u thic (acoleuthic), Thursday, 3 December 2009 18:16 (sixteen years ago)
