Dreamy vibraphone and/or marimba music

I traded in a bunch of CDs at my local used CD store and now have more store credit than I know what to do with. :-) I would like to find some CDs which feature vibraphone and/or marimba in the production, particularly in a dreamy way.

Some examples of what I'm talking about:

  • The Beach Boys' "Till I Die" song
  • Curt Boettcher's "Misty Mirage" song (has both dreamy vibes and marimba!)
  • Anything by The American Analog Set
  • The High Llamas' "Cold and Bouncy" and "Hawaii" albums
  • The Gary Burton/Ralph Towner album "Matchbook"
  • Tim Buckley's "Love From Room 109 at the Islander" song
What other albums/artists would you recommend? Please help me spend my store credit! Thanks in advance...

you might already have:
* Tim Buckley - Blue Afternoon
"...magnificent drifting..."
(currently out-of-print on CD?)

also on Beach Boys tip:
* Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue
not sure if marimbas, but certainly some dreamy tracks on there
e.g. "You And I"

for marimba / expanded-orchestral-palette
you may also want to try some late-60's early 70's R&B
like Jerry Butler's Iceman Cometh / Ice On Ice albums
other Gamble & Huff &/or Thom Bell stuff
Stang releases by The Moments or Sylvia
Carl Davis/Van McCoy Brunswick productions
Eugene Record, etc

Arthur Lyman, Julius Wechter in the Denny group, Bobby Montez 'Jungle Fantastique' LP, Latin Jazz Quintet 'Latin Soul' LP, Cal Tjader

Soul:
tracks on Thelma, Mirwood, Groovesville etc had a very heavy vibes sound, e.g. The Olympics 'Secret Agents'

Although mostly not dreamy, the Dylan Group's first album, It's All About (rimshots and faulty wiring), has some dreamy bits, and it's all about the vibes and marimbas.

It's not a close match to the examples you've given. But for a different kind of "dreamy" (gentle, hypnotic minimalism), you might enjoy some of Morton Feldman's later pieces, especially the ones he wrote for his regular University of Buffalo collaborators, including the percussionist Jan Williams. I'd pick that group's recording of Why Patterns? and Crippled Symmetry (a double CD on Hat Art, featuring flutes, piano, celeste, glockenspiel, and vibraphone) as the best of the bunch. It's one of my all-time favorite recor

On the straight jazz tip,if it's vibes you want, check the Modern Jazz Quartet for some of the sweetest stuff ever recorded.

yeah, the MJQ's Space LP (1969?, Apple) is particularly dreamy and, errr, spacey. and they do the Adagio of the Rodrigo Aranjuez concerto which is always a track to look out for.

as for Roy Ayers/RAMP: Roy Ayers doesn't play on the RAMP album. there are 2 versions of 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' - a RAMP one and a Roy Ayers one. 'Daylight' is only on the RAMP album

There's only one answer for dreamy marimba music ...

RUTHIE, RUTHIE!

(ok, i'll spoil it ... Ruth Underwood, on Overnight Sensation, Apostrophe, Roxy and Elsewhere, One Size Fits All, and You Can't Do That Onstage Anymore, Vol. 2. Just my opinion, of course!)

Only four years too late here, so I hope you've still got that credit! I think Steve Reich pretty much is the answer here...

You guys!

I need to make an all-vibes complilation for this girl I'm totally geeked about who loves the vibes. I dug through my mp3s and here's what I have:

Stereolab: The Spiracles
Stereolab: Velvet Water
Stereolab: Brakhage
American Analog Set: Sharp Briar
American Analog Set: I Must Soon Quit the Scene
American Analog Set: Gone to Earth
American Analog Set: Slow Company
American Analog Set: Modern Drummer
Tortoise: The Suspension Bridge at Iguazú Falls
Bill Perkins: Little Bird/Little Boat
Bruno Battisti D'Amario: Simplemente
Dave Pike: Sausalito
Walter Wanderley: Take A Chance With Me
Cloud One: Disco Juice
Visit Venus: Kinski Disko Fox Machine
Yonderboi: Yonderboi
The Art of Noise: Eye of a Needle
A Tribe Called Quest: Vibes And Stuff
Jeru the Damaja: Jungle Music
A Tribe Called Quest: Vibes And Stuff
Jeru the Damaja: Jungle Music
J-Live: A Charmed Life
Henry Mancini: Brief and Breezy
Roy Ayers Ubiquity: The Third Eye
Roy Ayers Ubiquity: Mystic Voyage
Tipsy: Liquordelic
Broadcast: Arc of a Journey
Broadcast: You and Me in Time

OK so I'm probably not going to keep all of these. I want really celestial, romantic, deep vibes so she'll listen to it and be like, 'I love the vibraphone. I love that he made me this comp of vibraphones. Now when I think of the vibes I totally think of this guy... OMG I LOVE THE VIBES AND ALSO I LOVE THIS GUY!!!!'

That's the best case scenario. But you catch my drift. Vibes for a girl that I'm super into. Who can hook me up?

"Moving Through Time" by Angelo Badalamenti
from the Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me soundtrack
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000002MF9.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Instrumental vibes with a little cello as well, somewhat haunting, but dreamy, too -- like a lot of Lynch's stuff. It's a beautiful piece.

monocle (Sean Miguel), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, "The Vibes Ain't Nothin' But The Vibes" by Barry Adamson
from Oedipus Schmoedipus. Mostly instrumental, although Adamson does a short early-Tom-Waits style monologue in the middle to canned crowd response. It's a cool, smoky-jazz-club track.

monocle (Sean Miguel), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:40 (seventeen years ago) link

4 years, and no one has mentioned "Marimba Song" by Laika...

Not terribly representative of the rest of their debut album, but it fits the query.

35 Hertz (35 Hertz), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I would also recommend:

"Playground Love (Vibraphone Version)" by Air
This instrumental version wasn't on the Virgin Suicides CD, but I believe it was available as a B-side on a couple of Air singles and a few various artist compilations. It's sublime and well worth seeking out. (The original vocal version on the soundtrack does have vibraphone, too, just not as the focus.)

"Unnatural Habitat" by the Greenhornes
from the Broken Flowers soundtrack CD. Instrumental track, lots of vibes.

monocle (Sean Miguel), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:56 (seventeen years ago) link

mmm...

I left 'Playground Love' off of here because it's not going to give her sexy, dreamy vibes. It's going to give her macabe vibes, and I'm not going for that. Same with the Twin Peaks soundtrack. I'm not trying to freak this girl out, I'm trying to seduce her. Come on guys! Not that I don't appreciate the suggestions.

Felt's "Train Above the City" is 8 instrumental tracks played on a vibraphone by Martin Duffy. Apparently the vibes were so expensive they had to rush out the recd to try & recoup the cost.

I bought this on vinyl when it came out (mid/late 80s, iirc), but got rid of it soon after (I liked my Felt doing jangly 3 minute pop songs) & haven't heard it since. I wish I still had it now.

'Buzzin Fly' by Tim Buckley is my favourite use of vibes. And 'Solid Air'

DUD.

surprised jimi hendrix's "drifting" hasn't come up here yet; the vibes overdubbed onto it make the song.

i listen to a good chunk of tuned percussion myself. just yesterday i was listening to the cover of "a hard day's night" by the yugoslavian band "indexi" which has some surprising and welcome vibraphone in it. last year's record by thor and friends is also very heavy on dreamy and minimal marimba.

i also really enjoy the quartertone marimba. i have a recording of a quartertone marimba duet i really enjoy.

when it comes to classic jazz, lionel hampton gets all the press but i have a great fondness for red norvo. his composition "dance of the octopus" is super, and he also does a good solo marimba version of "in a mist". just recently i picked up a couple really nice sides he did in '43 or '44 with stuff smith!

khan jamal really nailed a particular sweet spot for me. Everything I’ve heard by him is pretty sublime, he floats on this dreamy spiritual jazz cloud, very sunshiny and capable of really haunting tracks which hint at some kind of vast longing and loneliness. “Lovely afternoon” from his INFINITY album is very um lovely but also had this somewhat late night noirish undercurrent.

He has this great album from 1987 (first one I heard), Thinking of You, which manages to avoid some ‘80s jazz pitfalls while at the same time using newer sounds. Synth washes on the title track with vibes is an unexpectedly intoxicating mix.

I've always been partial to "The Traveller", which I had long assumed was from like 1973, but discogs says it's from 1986.

two months pass...

Walt Dickerson, folks, THE MAN

dude cut his sticks in half so he could play closer to the rack and therefore faster… also soaked his mallets in some special solution to dampen the sound and make them “dreamier” and less harsh

not too strange just bad audio (brimstead), Friday, 10 March 2023 02:13 (one year ago) link

their duo record is a tad somnambulant for my tastes, but I really like this album. Never seen the movie
