OK so I'm probably not going to keep all of these. I want really celestial, romantic, deep vibes so she'll listen to it and be like, 'I love the vibraphone. I love that he made me this comp of vibraphones. Now when I think of the vibes I totally think of this guy... OMG I LOVE THE VIBES AND ALSO I LOVE THIS GUY!!!!'

That's the best case scenario. But you catch my drift. Vibes for a girl that I'm super into. Who can hook me up?

Not terribly representative of the rest of their debut album, but it fits the query.

"Playground Love (Vibraphone Version)" by Air
This instrumental version wasn't on the Virgin Suicides CD, but I believe it was available as a B-side on a couple of Air singles and a few various artist compilations. It's sublime and well worth seeking out. (The original vocal version on the soundtrack does have vibraphone, too, just not as the focus.)

"Unnatural Habitat" by the Greenhornes
from the Broken Flowers soundtrack CD. Instrumental track, lots of vibes.

I left 'Playground Love' off of here because it's not going to give her sexy, dreamy vibes. It's going to give her macabe vibes, and I'm not going for that. Same with the Twin Peaks soundtrack. I'm not trying to freak this girl out, I'm trying to seduce her. Come on guys! Not that I don't appreciate the suggestions.

I bought this on vinyl when it came out (mid/late 80s, iirc), but got rid of it soon after (I liked my Felt doing jangly 3 minute pop songs) & haven't heard it since. I wish I still had it now.

'Buzzin Fly' by Tim Buckley is my favourite use of vibes. And 'Solid Air'

surprised jimi hendrix's "drifting" hasn't come up here yet; the vibes overdubbed onto it make the song.

i listen to a good chunk of tuned percussion myself. just yesterday i was listening to the cover of "a hard day's night" by the yugoslavian band "indexi" which has some surprising and welcome vibraphone in it. last year's record by thor and friends is also very heavy on dreamy and minimal marimba.

i also really enjoy the quartertone marimba. i have a recording of a quartertone marimba duet i really enjoy.

when it comes to classic jazz, lionel hampton gets all the press but i have a great fondness for red norvo. his composition "dance of the octopus" is super, and he also does a good solo marimba version of "in a mist". just recently i picked up a couple really nice sides he did in '43 or '44 with stuff smith!

Also Eberhard Weber's Fluid Rustle has some outstanding vibe and marimba work from Gary Burton.

christian burchard's work with embryo (his primary axe is vibraphone but he also plays marimba) should definitely get some props, even if i wouldn't quite classify "kosmische" in the same category as "dreamy" myself.

A thing I love is the syncopated tuned percussion / DX marimba part in 80s synth pop, often introduced in the latter part of the song.

Instrumental vibes with a little cello as well, somewhat haunting, but dreamy, too -- like a lot of Lynch's stuff. It's a beautiful piece.

Yes, that album and his "Visions" album with Sun Ra are terrific mental air conditioning.

Great descriptor and yes Visions is ace. I’m not completely familiar with his output but everything I’ve heard has been a treat.

Ordered this one from a person on Discogs the other day after I posted in here. I remember having it on CD several years back, but, for surely idiotic reasons, I purged all my Cal Tjader, so away it went. I really remember much about the album besides it being a really cascading swirl of Cal's vibes and Al Zulaica's Fender Rhodes. Quite looking forward to hearing it again.

khan jamal really nailed a particular sweet spot for me. Everything I’ve heard by him is pretty sublime, he floats on this dreamy spiritual jazz cloud, very sunshiny and capable of really haunting tracks which hint at some kind of vast longing and loneliness. “Lovely afternoon” from his INFINITY album is very um lovely but also had this somewhat late night noirish undercurrent.

He has this great album from 1987 (first one I heard), Thinking of You, which manages to avoid some ‘80s jazz pitfalls while at the same time using newer sounds. Synth washes on the title track with vibes is an unexpectedly intoxicating mix.

I've always been partial to "The Traveller", which I had long assumed was from like 1973, but discogs says it's from 1986.
