The Wyld Stallyns (pronounced "Wild Stallions") is the fictional metal band from the film that later proves responsible for bringing peace and harmony to the world and creating a utopia on Earth. The founding members were Bill S. Preston, Esq. and Ted "Theodore" Logan. They are later joined by Elizabeth and Joanna, two princesses from medieval England, The Grim Reaper, and "Station", a Martian, as well as two "good robot"s modeled after Bill and Ted.
In the sequel Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, the villain De Nomolos tries unsuccessfully to stop the band from creating a peaceful future by replacing Bill and Ted with robotic doubles. Later, Bill and Ted destroy the robots and make their world-wide debut at the 4th Annual San Dimas Battle of the Bands. As predicted by time-traveller Rufus, they bring peace to the world and eventually play a sellout tour on the planet Mars.
One of the bands they competed against in the Battle of the Bands was real-life California band Primus, led by Les Claypool. The song Wyld Stallyns performs at the competition was "God Gave Rock And Roll To You", which in real life was originally performed by Argent, and later covered by KISS. It was the KISS version of the song that was used in the actual movie.
i'm too easy to entertain.

Yes, I love this song. How can you not? And really, the reward for sitting through that movie is actually getting to see that doo-wop group miming to that song at the end.
(xpost) I'd count "Dark Side", for sure. I mean, I'm giving an example of "a song by a real [artist] in real life", but it just happened to have been "performed" by a fake artist in the movie, as was the case in Eddie and the Cruisers.

The highlight of every show was near the end, when the plot would come to a halt, and one of the characters would say, "Hey...do you guys want to play a little bit?" Then they'd walk over to their stage and bust into some MOR ballad.
But they always played the same song at the beginning, the "California Dreams" title song. Damn.

Surf dudes with attitudes, kinda groovy - Laid back moodsSky above, sand below good vibrations, feelin' mellowDon't give it up. Don't wanna stop.
Chorus:Don't wake me up. Don't wake me up if I'm dreamin'.California dreams. Just let me lay here in the sun.Until my dream is done
Palm trees, ocean breeze, let's go cruising. You and me, salt air, sun bleached hair,Endless summer, take me thereWont let it go, want more and more.Chorus
Noise and confusion, tough times in the neighborhood.Let me keep my illusion. These dreams are good.
(instrumental part)
Chorus
