So is that "My Chemical Romance" track going to be an 'unexpected' number one?

Only, I'm expecting it.

Perhaps Jonathan King wasn't expecting it.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 13 October 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

it's ALL indie, i'm not being taken in by this hair-splitting flim-flammery.

benrique (Enrique), Friday, 13 October 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

It is so not indie.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 October 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

enrique otm. it's all indie, it's all disgusting, and it should all be bullied off the dancefloor with sticks (where sticks = paris hilton).

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 13 October 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

MCR are American and the word "indie" actually means something in America, so no, they are not indie.

different kinds of indie but indie nonetheless. it's like a subgenre of indie which against all the odds seems to be based on being even more pathetic and kickable than indie itself. the existence of emo serves only to prove that the BULLIES WERE RIGHT ALL ALONG.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 13 October 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

Moody teenagers listen to indie? I always associated indie with smartass college students in dorky glasses.

Rodney is a group! (R. J. Greene), Friday, 13 October 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

MCR = goth (image, themes) emo (whininess) pop (OTT bluster and prettiness of it all) convergence

;_; (blueski), Friday, 13 October 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

I actually think the post-Strokes haircut indie fanbase has gone beyond the teenage things now. It's now music for people who were 14-16 when the first Strokes album came out - they've grown up with the music.

Emo is to 00's indie what nu-metal was to 2000 Britpop hangover indie.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 October 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

rodney, what happens to moody teenagers when the go to college?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 13 October 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

can you buy this song on 7" BLACK vinyl?

;_; (blueski), Friday, 13 October 2006 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

suggestion: Dark Star influenced The Music as much as Muse (i.e. a bit)

;_; (blueski), Friday, 13 October 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

they don't sound all that Muse-y at all, Enrique! They sound like... punk-pop, except with loads of bluster and eyeliner and histrionixxx; so there's a lot of surface things shared, but the core of the songs is structurally very different. you can sing 'all the small things' over the top of 'i'm not okay (i promise)', it's really fun.

I might just go out and buy this :D

acrobat (elwisty), Friday, 13 October 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

P!ATD's whole schtick is RnB production on rock tho, innit?

"Welcome to the Black Parade" is kinda like a "Minority" by Green Day for 2006, only with less "pretension" and more pretension.

"Warning" doesn't sound like any other Green Day album really, it's got all this weird kind of "mature rockabilly" feel to a lot of it, it's actually the best Green Day album there is ("Misery" is the best song they've everm recorded, right?), and it figures that it bombed leading to American fucking Idiot.

but - going back a sec - in that case I think 'warning' (the single) would be a better example of green day being unexpected? The stomp-stomp-stomp of minority is quite typical, the warning single was much more 'huh? oh, that's new', I seem to remember. Mind you the only green day album i've listened to in full was 'nimrod', a very long time ago.

also everyone's like "the nme hates emo" but MCR were mentioned about a grillion times on the front page of the website last i looked. this is further evidence they are indie.

This is a silly argument, since it mostly hinges on a US/UK discrepancy in how "indie" is used, but since I'm American, the fact that they're on the front page of a very mainstream music publication, the fact that this thread starts out wondering whether they'll hit #1 on the singles chart, would sort of indicate that they're not indie, or at least the way it's used in the US. (Even in a day when the Decemberists are signed to Capitol.) I'm not really sure what the UK definition is, besides bands with guitars that young people like, because really, that could be anyone from Wolf Parade to Papa Roach over here.

this is, i think, one of their strengths.

but surely the awesomeness of buttonz -and of everything PCD do - partly lies in how unexciting they are? that they're so bald and straightforward a genre exercise, and that genre is vaguely-orientalist-sinuous-r'n'b, it's not something to make your heart leap into your throat (which is the affect that MCR are trying to recreate and focus on, using the tim-honoured method of big slamming guitars and shouty-but-not-screamy singing and big pop choruses). man cannot live by knockoff scott storch productions alone.

but only GIRLS can ever get away with this! in fact i think only GIRLS can ever get away with self-pity, not just in pop but in ALL ART EVER: when a boy does it i just get irritated by how FEEBLE he is.

man cannot live by knockoff scott storch productions alone.

this is where one turns to the BOBBINS! the knife and the allien and so on.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 13 October 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

time-honoured, even; I cannot type. (maybe tim-honoured as well? i don't know.)

Lex why are you such a sexist! Girls are allowed to be weak and boys aren't? You are such a victim of traditional gender roles. :((

I really want to know who's kissin' Kristin and if Ashley's dating Zac now. Kogan to thread!

(on second thoughts, don't bother Frank)

(MCR are totally teenpop tho' - in that they have a huge teenage gothgirl fanbase in UK)

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 13 October 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

What will happen next:

a) Mr Snrub turns up making an utterly bemused comment
b) US poster turns up going "this thread is so fucking British"
c) Lex and Dom lez up while listening to Morningwood

ah, so lex doesn't like pop men. except PSBs?

i like pop men if they are gay, or if they are hip-hop, or if they are house dudes. psb fit into category 1.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

more gay hip-hop house dudes please

;_; (blueski), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

Do you allow non singing non-house people (ie- dubstep) then The Lex? And I thought you liked the latest Scott Walker too, neither gay,(to my knowledge) house, nor hip hop! But of course he doesn't sing of his OWN angst, does he? Yr not sposed to identify with it...

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

ok i heard this so-called song over the weekend. or about half of it. and the green day comparison is about right.

but in some ways it just reminded me of 'christmas time (don't let the bells end)'. just because there are lots of guitar bands doesn't mean they're not all the same. anyway it sucks.

but sadly i can't go for this:

people need more pussycat dolls in their lives. unfeeling sexbots with NO EMOTIONS WHATSOEVER.

-- The Lex (alex.macpherso...), October 13th, 2006.

and i saw the knife on saturday and was more impressed by the interior of the venue than anything...

wasn't made for these times, holmes.

i saw the knife on saturday too nrq! i really enjoyed it apart from feeling a bit ill.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

I've only just heard this on the radio today - the opening bit is quite interesting, then it promptly turns into a Lostprophets b-side. Eugh.

indie bands be shook

pscott (elwisty), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

Singer Tom Meighan said: "It's like ventriloquists' music. It's weird and dark. They don't have anything positive to say. The only good news is that it won't last. These clowns won't be around for much longer.

"Their make-up will flake off and the scene will die out. And it can't happen soon enough."

Guitarist Serge Pizzorno added: "I just can't relate to it. We are about decadence, having a good time and getting off your head. We champion youthful rebellion.

"We're into peace and love, spreading harmony and having respect for people. But these people are the absolute opposite. It's sad.

"These emo kids should get out more and try and have a good time instead."

Such stupidity!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

both kasabian and mcr should be locked in a room with nothing to listen to except yummy bingham. they might learn something.

that, or their faces should all be stamped on.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

I SECOND THE MOTION.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

I can see why the kids are all emo and depressed when the other option is to listen to Kasabian.

The Real Esteban Buttez (EstieButtez1), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

the OTHER option is to listen to ciara!

thankfully most proper kids have chosen this.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Ciara totally has higher record sales among the 13-18 year old demographic than My Chemical Romance.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

"proper kids" dom

pscott (elwisty), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

are you suggesting that she is not popular with 13-18 yr olds?

as you know i am not one for putting much stock in chart positions but i do note that no ciara single has failed to make the top 5.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

my point would stand even better with beyoncé as an example! haha are you going to try and claim that the kids prefer MCR to beyoncé?

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

or pussycat dolls? or sean paul? haha

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

are you saying that this MCR no 1 is meaningless? poor the MCR

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

Goodies is double-platinum in the U.S. and gold in the U.K. Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge is platinum in the U.S. and not certified in the U.K. Of course, we can't prove who's buying the records.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

They'll listen to her on the radio and like her songs (I've witnessed ostensibly straight teenage boys sing along to her), but won't buy her albums.

field mobb feat. ciara has the distinction of being the only single that fell from its download position after its single release on the chart so far. It didn't even make the top 40.
