i've seriously been waiting for most of my adult life for this.

dudez i'm so fucking stoked.

8 CD? 2 DVDS? shut yo mouth neil! step the fuck back, man, headz ain't ready for the shit you got...headz ain't ready man i swear they're not!

awesome.

I'll believe it when I see it on the shelves. But yeah, it does look pretty awesome. And this one just goes up to 1972? Ha ha. Anyone have any idea how much this will cost me?

tylerw, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I've been working at the studio where they've been preparing this. I practically jumped out of my skin when I saw the room with all the original tape reels. this is gonna be great.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

i think there are blurbs about it in the new archives Massey Hall CD (which is *sublime)

wow really? any tidbits of info you'd like to share? I'm really hoping for "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" and "After The Gold Rush" outtakes...

tylerw, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:21 (seventeen years ago) link

oh shit! footage from journey through the past! might he actually release the HDCD or the actual film on this? I've been kinda obsessed with that album for the past month.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:33 (seventeen years ago) link

These things are going to be so awesome, although I'm still pretty skeptical considering how long they've been in the works. I remember when he first set up a website to hype these, I think I first saw it in, what, '98? But yeah, I am so thrilled to think these may actually see release soon. I just hope they aren't insanely expensive.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:33 (seventeen years ago) link

they're kinda understandably paranoid about the material and people stealing stuff so I didn't really pry. The studio's done the last few DVDs for Neil so there's some funny stories (band calling studio to see if anybody has any weed, etc.). This is all second-hand though, I've yet to meet the actual engineers involved with the archives project.

x-post

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:34 (seventeen years ago) link

So yeah, I think it has literally been 20 years since Shakey started talking about this project. Am I right in thinking that the audio portion of the box set will be all studio recordings (since the Performance Series single discs are covering the live shows)? An actual release of "Journey Through the Past" would be cool. I don't care how bad it is--it's got to be better than "Human Highway", right?

tylerw, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:42 (seventeen years ago) link

they're kinda understandably paranoid about the material and people stealing stuff so I didn't really pry.

understandable. but your first name *is* shakey after all, that should earn you some pull over there.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

An actual release of "Journey Through the Past" would be cool. I don't care how bad it is

it's actually really really good! totally corrosive version of "ohio", and the last half is like some messed-up audio collage that includes field recordings and a hypnotic 16 minute version of "words". I loves it. it smells like history.

but neil's such a heartbreaker, he'll probably put everything out *except* that.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

i have journey through the past on vinyl, it's good.

the real tragedy of neil's back catalog though is "time fades away" being out of print.

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah Time Fades Away is one of my favorites. "Yonder Stands the Sinner"!

but then I also like "Human Highway".

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I've got Journey Through the Past on record as well--I was talking about the movie...will that ever see the light of day again? And yes, it is fairly ridiculous that Neil has never gotten around to issuing Time Fades Away on CD---it's one of his best albums! For serious.

tylerw, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:07 (seventeen years ago) link

since this is actually on the label's website I would be surprised if it doesn't come out now. It would be nice if he'd reissue the early cds as well, since the packaging on them is kind of rubbish and they could do with a remaster treatment (I've held off buying anymore expecting this to happen for two years)

akm, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:12 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, the only early one I have on CD is Everybody Knows This is Nowhere and its kinda too bright and crisp.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:13 (seventeen years ago) link

(almost all my Neil stuff is on vinyl and I prefer it that way.)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Neil sounds better on vinyl anyway. Just get the original records.

sexyDancer, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:14 (seventeen years ago) link

the hdcd remaster of time fades away leaked a while ago. it is awesome.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:19 (seventeen years ago) link

avoid at all costs the "Everybody Knows..." CD. It is pretty crappy sounding compared to the LP. I think the remastered stuff on that recent greatest hits CD sounds a lot better, too.

And regarding the Times Fades Away HDCD leak--where can i find this?

when is the Time Fades Away HDCD set to be released?

Also, Shakey, I'm assuming that 2 of the 8 discs on this will be the Massey Hall and Fillmore ones that were just released? Is that correct?

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:28 (seventeen years ago) link

God, I hope not! That would be kind of lame, since I've already bought those two. The way I understood it was that the Live Performance Series was something different from the box set. But maybe I'm wrong?

tylerw, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, Shakey, I'm assuming that 2 of the 8 discs on this will be the Massey Hall and Fillmore ones that were just released? Is that correct?

I'll ask, but yeh this was my assumption too.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

cool lemme know if you can...i haven't bought massey yet and if it is gonna be in the box i'll probably just hold off. thx

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:44 (seventeen years ago) link

As someone mentioned upthread, I think the Performance Series stuff that's been released is separate from the Archives boxes.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:44 (seventeen years ago) link

when is the Time Fades Away HDCD set to be released?

there is no release date. it was supposed to be done with on the beach and whatever else was in that first wave of hdcds, but neil didn't like the way it came out and he put the kibosh on it. journey through the past was done in hdcd as well but that never leaked.

problem is both of the original releases were cobbled together from two track tapes, and parts of journey were pulled straight from video so there's only so far you can go in making them super hifi. tfa sounds great anyways. hopefully it will be in archives vol 2. as a ditch trilogy fan that will be wot gets me excited, tho having journey in vol 1 would be pretty reet.

From I can gather from what Niel's been sayin is that the NYArchvie boxes will contain EVERYTHING he ever recorded.

So you know the difference. Some of it is good, some of it is crap that wasn't released-there's a reason. Take a look, see what it is. That's what a fuckin' archive is about, not "Here's Neil Young in all his wonderfulness-the great, phenomenal fucking wonderfulness." That's not what I want.

I want people to know how fuckin' terrible I was. How scared I was and how great I was. The real picture-that's what I'm looking for. Not a product. And I think that's what the die-hard fans want - the whole fuckin' thing." -Neil Young

(btw I have not listened to them yet meself)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 21:55 (seventeen years ago) link

so just to backpedal a bit, does anyone else think it's kinda lame that the Fillmore and Massey Hall shows are apparently going to be included in the big box set? i mean, most hardcore Neil fans (who this archives box is almost certainly aimed at) are going to have already bought the single disc editions on the day they came out--even though the nerds (like, uh, me) already have them on bootleg! So if I get the 8 cd/2 dvd set later this year, I'll have three versions of the same show? I guess I'd rather just have a six disc/2 dvd set, if it'd be cheaper. anyway...

EBAY

Edward III, Monday, 19 March 2007 17:10 (seventeen years ago) link

more updates: Journey Through the Past is not gonna be included in the box set, either in music or film form. The DVDs are primarily home videos and unreleased live footage, young Neil driving his gear around in a hearse, etc. Stuff that was made for official release (like Human Highway or Rust Never Sleeps or Journey Through the Past) are not in there.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 19 March 2007 17:15 (seventeen years ago) link

that's kind of lame

hmm, yeah that 74 Bottom Line show is probably the best Neil Young bootleg ever (which is saying something). It ought to have been included as a bonus disc with the On The Beach reissue. But it's an audience recording (I think), so it probably won't be officially released. Still, I'm glad it exists in any form. That opening "Pushed It Over The Edge/Citizen Kane Jr. Blues" is up there with his finest never-released tunes. Wonder if there's a studio version of that song in the archives...I've heard the sort of wonky CSNY live rendition. Good, but not as good as the song deserves.

Anyhoo, don't mean to be ungrateful or anything. Regardless of what's on these Archive box sets and what's not ME LOVE NEIL YOUNG.

tylerw, Monday, 19 March 2007 21:04 (seventeen years ago) link

News from Billboard:

"Massey Hall" and last fall's "Live at the Fillmore East" will be included in the box as bonus discs. The remainder of the chronological collection features material cut with Young's early Canadian band the Squires, recordings from the period during which he lived in Topanga Canyon, Calif., scores of previously unreleased studio tracks and a live disc drawn from a week's worth of concerts from the Toronto venue the Riverboat.

"This really is an audio biography, not a boxed set," enthuses Standish, who says three additional "Archives" boxes will follow. "The photos in the book are unbelievable. Those in and of themselves are incredible pieces of art."

The notoriously press-shy Young is expected to do some interviews in support of "Archives" but for now is not planning a tour around the release. "A lot of people don't realize how extensive and intense the Freedom of Speech tour he did with Crosby, Stills & Nash was," says Standish. "I think Neil is taking a little bit of a break at the moment. But you never know what's around the corner. If the muse moves him, anything can happen."

tylerw, Thursday, 22 March 2007 14:36 (seventeen years ago) link

soooo, the Fillmore and Massey Hall shows are in addition to the 8 discs? Or what?
Also: "Notoriously press-shy?" I mean he doesn't give interviews every five minutes, but he's not exactly Dylanesque in this regard.

69, Friday, 21 November 2008 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link

yes it is really coming out. it will be on Blu-Ray. Seems like most of the hold up is related to all the fancy Blu-Ray programming required (I didn't press too hard on when things would be done or why they were late since that would've been pretty rude). I talked to the tech who's working on it and he ran through a bunch of the menus and extras on the discs - apparently one of the issues that took a bunch of time was how to make it so that you could be playing music from the disc while going through the menus (apparently this is not currently possible on most Blu-Rays?) The menus and graphics are INSANE - all these ridiculously high-res memorabilia photos and tour manifests and handwritten lyrics and stuff like that. I saw 9 discs in all being prepared, saw the sleeve mockups, etc. There was a disc devoted to Journey Through the Past, two discs titled Topanga Canyon (one 1969, the other 1970), the Massey Hall stuff, some Buffalo Springfield stuff. I can't remember all of it.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 21 November 2008 17:48 (fifteen years ago) link

I dunno how much unreleased stuff will be on it. Guy played me a great Buffalo Springfield song that I didn't recognize but I dunno if it was unreleased. There are boxes and boxes of tapes so I wasn't sure what was gonna get used or not (I expressed a particular interest in the box labelled "Human Highway" but the guy just laughed)

No long version of "Bluebird" (the one from the 1973 2LP comp) and one of the ugliest most-unreadable book designs ever.

I think there are Everybody Knows This is Nowhere outtakes. I have no idea if this will be released on CD as well as Blu-Ray - given how the stuff that's already been released has gone out on CD I would think there would be but I don't really know. They seem to be spending a lot of time making this the be-all end-all of high quality Blu-Ray product though. Kinda ridiculous.

tylerw, Saturday, 6 December 2008 22:09 (fifteen years ago) link

It was recorded in the same place where Coltrane was recorded, so there’s a lot of heavy stuff in there.

"Toast" was recorded in Rudy van Gelder's studio? Or is Neil sitting on a long-delayed Trane tribute album?

You know what would be a surreal release? A double/triple LP from the Tonight's the Night tour of England, featuring both the opening act (Eagles) and Young. I can only dream.

QuantumNoise, Sunday, 7 December 2008 22:55 (fifteen years ago) link

at least Neil's saying it will come out on CD, if it comes out before the end of time (necessary caveat since it's Neil)

Euler, Sunday, 7 December 2008 23:06 (fifteen years ago) link

here's the info on TOAST -- not sure what Coltrane would've recorded in San Fran, but who knows?
In 2000, Crazy Horse was in San Francisco, south of Market street, at an old studio called "Toast." Coltrane had recorded there, among many other jazz greats, known and unknown. The Dot Com boom was happening and buildings were being bought and turned into lofts or torn down completely and rebuilt. New money was everywhere. Toast was a target. The place was a little run down and sort of on its last legs.
To a man, if you asked Crazy Horse about these sessions, you would learn that it was a depressing atmosphere and things were not going well. The band recorded there for months and came up with very little. Nothing, other than one song, "Goin' Home" was ever finished. But a lot was started. Several of the songs written at Toast showed up on the "Are You Passionate" album with Booker T. and the MGs. But that album met with mixed reaction.
Now, years later, John Hanlon, the original co-producer with Neil, is at work mixing all of the Toast material. Many songs share a bluesy, jazz-tinged vibe as a common thread. Three solid rockers are interspersed in the mix. Other songs are long with extensive explorations between verses, a Crazy Horse trademark, kind of like a down-played Tonight's the Night, except these songs deal directly with love and loss, not drugs. The ambient atmosphere, foggy, blue and desolate, pervades many of the tracks, if not all, with Tommy Brea's muted trumpet and dusky male and female counter-part BGs occasionally surfacing from Poncho and Ralph on one side, Nancy Hall and Pegi Young on the other. A cool and sleepy lounge piano rises in the fog occasionally.
The result of this is perhaps one of the most under-estimated and deceptive Crazy Horse records of all time, with many songs originally discarded, and then re-recorded with Booker T. and the MGs. The original performances now surface again through a foggy past. Like an abstract painting, lyrical images of a love lost and maybe even destroyed forever just refuse to die, creating a landscape littered with half-broken dreams and promises.
"Toast" is coming, a dark Crazy Horse classic for the ages. This first NYA "Special Edition" is the beginning of a new series of unreleased albums.

tylerw, Monday, 8 December 2008 00:51 (fifteen years ago) link

will be cool to see what comes out of the "Special Edition" NYA things ... "Homegrown" finally? "Chrome Dreams"? The second unreleased Trans-style album?

tylerw, Monday, 8 December 2008 00:52 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, you can get the best version here: http://qualityboots.blogspot.com/2008/05/neil-young-chrome-dreams-rust.html
maybe better than american stars n bars (which came out in its place ...)
but it is kind of cool that neil is putting out an unreleased record that no one's even heard of, much less bootlegged. I kind of don't think it's going to be as rad as the description above suggests, but it sounds fun anyway.

tylerw, Monday, 8 December 2008 01:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Sugar Mountain = Self Titled
Fillmore 1970 = Everybody Knows ...
Massey Hall = After the Gold Rush
Would be great if he expanded Time Fades Away to go along with Harvest, and yeah, put out a live Tonight's the Night show. And of course, for ZUMA, put out one of those Japanese shows. Those are incredible.

Neil Young is a tremendous artist, possibly on par with The Who but in a different style, playing his country rock. My favorite record has always been Ragged Glory for White Line. About trucking or cocaine I wonder?

Dan Landings, Saturday, 17 January 2009 01:07 (fifteen years ago) link

It's not about cocaine - he wrote it decades before Ragged Glory, slightly different lyrics and the title 'River of Pride'. Great song though.

iatee, Saturday, 17 January 2009 01:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh I see. Yes a great song.

Dan Landings, Saturday, 17 January 2009 01:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Also I think 'Fork in the Road' is great, or, at least the idea of it is great. I probably won't listen to the song more than 10 times in my life, but it does have some great lines. 'I got hope. But you can't eat hope' = zeitgeist of 1/2009 in 8 words.

He's an old fogey and it comes through once in a while (Twist and Shout reference, vinyl stubbornness) but he's the type of old dude who's always willing to live in the contemporary world instead of the 1960s - both musically and politically.

iatee, Saturday, 17 January 2009 01:24 (fifteen years ago) link

buuuut...man the real "country songs" on here are really fucking phony and annoying....god "Motor City" is right up there with "Let's Roll" or "This Note's for You"...obv I love Neil to death but his real strident obvious songs are just barf to me

it makes a case for the country years, for sure -- things like "southern pacific" and "grey riders" are fantastic. but neil's "voice of the people" country stuff can be a bit hard to swallow, it's true. you kind of want to think he's just trolling reagan america, but that might be giving it too much credit.

it's missing this great version of "interstate" which is a shame.

The audio format is a good idea, and more power to him...but "Neil Young says this audio format is sonically superior" is right up there with "mastering personally overseen by Pete Townshend." In other words, someone who's spent decades playing loud, and is pushing 70, maybe doesn't have the hearing to be the go-to authority on this kind of thing.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 12:08 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, Neil's got a history of dabbling with sketchy audio wankery:

Time Fades Away was recorded directly from the soundboard to 16-track using the Quad-8 CompuMix, the unreliable first digital mixing soundboard—against the wishes of producer David Briggs, who referred to it as the "Compufuck" but was forced to yield to the desires of Young. This resulted in a murky-sounding release.

There were no 2 track masters ever made of this record. The master discs were cut directly from the 16 track masters through the Compumix system. A mix was recorded to a second 16 track machine--we had 2 that would run perfectly together--to feed the variable pitch system of the lathe--but was discarded when we were through. I was the mastering engineer who cut the masters.
—Phil Brown[citation needed]

Because no two-track stereo master tape was ever made as would commonly be done, the album cannot be remastered in a traditional manner. If any new release was to be attempted, a new mix would need to be made from the original multitrack tapes.

one year passes...

Nice new interview w/Poncho over at Rolling Stone. Includes this set of nuggets:

RS: Neil brought you guys back into the studio in 2000 to cut an album called Toast. What happened there? It never came out.

P: Everybody got sick. (Laughs) We were recording the album and really playing pretty good. Then we went on this tour of South America right in the middle of it. One of them was Rock in Rio. It was a huge amount of people, like 300,000 or something. The audience was going wild and it really inspired us. We did "Like a Hurricane" and they were humming the melody the whole time like a soccer chant. It just blew us away. I looked over and saw Neil and he was gone. He just threw his head up in the air and was just playing guitar. It was gigantic. All of us remember it.

Then we came home and went back into Toast. Everything we tried to play, we kind of played Latin style. [Laughs] We got confused down there. I don't mean we didn't know how to play our instruments or we didn't know what we were doing or Toast is shit, but all of a sudden we were going in different directions. We just weren't in the same place as when we left. We kept playing and recorded some things, but it just didn't work out.

RS: I spoke to Neil about five years ago and he was super excited about Toast. He said he had big plans for a release, but it obviously didn't happen.

P: I remember during the making of Sleeps With Angels I found myself in the studio without the rest of the band. All of a sudden, here comes [Warner Bros. Records chairman] Mo Ostin and his son Michael with some other cats. They had nobody to talk to besides me, and they basically cornered me and said, "When are the archives coming out?" He was talking about them coming out that Christmas [of 1994.] I said, "As far as I know, man, he's all over it. He says he's got it ready. It's really coming out." And here we are.

RS: He did finally release that first box set a few years ago, but imagine part two is still a ways away. I feel like he lost interest.

P: Do you think Volume Two will have Bluenotes material?

RS: I think that's Volume Three. I think Volume Two will be 1973 to 1979. It's a real big six years.

P: I remember once a long time ago, someone around the studio said there's 154 unreleased songs.

In the Rolling Stone article yesterday about the CSN&Y l974 live record that's coming out Nash said something about knowing Neil but not like having his cell phone number or anything.

Like yr in band with a dude, a band that shares everyone's name, you've played with this guy on his records & tours, but you don't know how to get a hold of him must be kind of weird.

chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 19:49 (eleven years ago) link

I mean I get not wanting Stills or Crosby have yr number but Nash seems like an ok dude

chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 19:50 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, but he's probably too touchy-feely for Neil.

Sheela-Tubb-Mann, You Real Know-It-All (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 19:51 (eleven years ago) link

haha yeah. nash is so emo, though... i'm sure he could get in touch with neil pretty easily if he reallllly wanted to. but it would be weird to be so tied up with the guy and not have any say in the relationship.

tylerw, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 19:53 (eleven years ago) link

I dunno, I've heard Crosby & Nash say stuff like this for a long time, I bet Neil probably is pretty hard for them the get a hold of...tbf he seems to have a really weird relationship with the whole CSN&Y thing

Of course, everyone has the right to an opinion, and my opinions, based on real science and scientific research, are always open to attack or misinterpretation. With this in mind, I visited a church in Iowa looking for a sign. I wanted a sign to tell me if I was doing the right thing by campaigning for cleaner fuels and more responsibility with regard to fossil fuel abuse and carbon waste. I drove my car to a little church on a hilltop in the middle of a cornfield. I parked right in front and walked up the steps and sidewalk to the white wooden church, with its impeccably manicured grounds, no litter, completely clean and well cared for. I opened the door, took off my hat and walked in. The church was empty and silent. I looked at the neat rows of pews, immaculate in their order and cleanliness, and imagined the congregation, small as it must be, gathering for worship on a Sunday. In my mind I asked for guidance, something I am not in the habit of doing.
After a few silent and peaceful moments, I turned towards the door, signed the guestbook, Neil Young, California. Then I made a contribution in a small wooden box. As I opened the door and exited the church I put my hat back on and walked along down the perfectly trimmed sidewalk back to the steps I had initially climbed. Looking down at my feet I saw something out of place. A small piece of corn stover, a cob with no kernels left, was there on the step. I felt a rush of something I had not experienced before as I stooped down to pick it up. It was light in my hand and looked exactly like the corn stover I had seen the day before in a laboratory at POET Ethanol where I had gone to learn how Cellulosic ethanol was made. I had learned how this stover was carefully collected, used and managed so enough was left in the field to replenish the soil. I am not a very religious man in the normal sense, but to me this was a sign I felt in my soul, a spiritual feeling that I was doing the right thing. I give thanks to the Great Spirit.” ~ My driver and bff Neil Young.

Moses had a burning bush. Neil had a used corn cob.

To everyone who loves music –

I’m very happy to bring you some good news. All of us at Team PONO have been focused on getting everything right for our early 2014 launch of Pono.

Which is why the first two albums we are releasing on PONO are Homegrown and Oceanside-Countryside

The simplest way to describe what we’ve accomplished is that we’ve liberated the music of the artist from the digital file and restored it to its original artistic quality - as it was in the studio. So it has primal power.

Hearing PONO for the first time is like that first blast of daylight when you leave a movie theater on a sun-filled day. It takes you a second to adjust. Then you enter a bright reality, of wonderfully rendered detail.

This music moves you. So you can feel. That’s why so many musicians are behind PonoMusic – this is important work that honors their art. This is the way they wanted you to hear their music.

PONO starts at the source: artist-approved studio masters we’ve been given special access to. Then we work with our brilliant partners at Meridian to unlock the richness of the artist’s music to you. There is nothing like hearing this music - and we are working hard to make that experience available to all music lovers, soon.

Our mission is also to make PONO just as accessible as any music you buy and listen to today. So we’ll be launching both the PONO portable player – an updated version of the one I showed on David Letterman’s program – and an online library, with all your favorite music available in PonoMusic quality. Everything you need to feel music anew.

Stay tuned for more updates. And be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest information. We hope you’ll try PONO when it comes your way, and that it brings you the soul of music.

Yours, for PonoMusic –
Neil Young

I dunno, I kinda feel like hearing loss doesn't completely obliterate an appreciation for quality recordings. those recent swans records sound incredible, and I suspect it's not just because gira surrounds himself w/ quality ppl, and I can't think of a better poster child for hearing loss.

teenagers can hear frequencies old bastards like us can't, but I'm sure I've got a better ear for recording quality than the avg teen. having a discerning ear is an instinct, a way of listening that goes beyond frequency cutoffs.

i guess it's arguable that crazy horse is well-represented by live albums (live rust, weld, year of the horse etc), but there really shouldn't be two 1970 solo discs before there's one live 76 set.

yeah i've seen pics of the cellar door interior - easy to imagine seeing a solo singer-songwriter there, but realllllly hard to imagine what it was like to see Miles Davis' group there in 1970.

Yeah, I guess it's a different era.

Mostly just venting, because including those live albums in the last box was pretty lame, seeing as they were sold stand alone months in advance, no? I'm wary of buying any Neil stand alone stuff at this point. It'd be like paying for access to a Prince website. Caveat emptor.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 19:37 (ten years ago) link

Interview in the new Uncut: "Every record I've ever made" will be available on Pono in the fall (including Time Fades Away). Also, "Archives 2 still has a year to go before it's released, and it'll be released in a digital format and it will have a lot of the same content that the Blu-ray (of the first Archives) had."

BUT in the new Mojo Neil says, "[Archives 2] will be completed in late June. It'll be in Pono; that's the way it will be delivered." No other format? "There may be a few people who want the Blu-ray. We'll have to talk to the record company about that but it won't be released until next year."

So, in summation, Archives 2 will never be released in any format ever.

I work for a division of Warner Music. Twice a year, we have a charity record sale; each WMG label donates stuff they've got too much of and it gets sold at ultra-cheap prices ($1 for a single CD, $4 and up for box sets. Last year, I got the Stooges Fun House 7CD box for $10.). Anyway, I've been going for a couple of years now, and every time I go there are giant piles of Archives Vol. 1 that no one touches. WMG took a fucking bath on that thing. I'm not at all convinced they'll want to produce an equally elaborate second installment.

rap steve (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 5 September 2014 15:52 (nine years ago) link

it does seem increasingly weird that dudes like dylan and young with these deep archives of live performances aren't looking at what the grateful dead does and just copying that. neil performance series is great, but it's not quite dick's picks. if he just told jonathan bernstein to do the same thing as dick's picks, there would be tons of great (and complete) shows available.

tylerw, Friday, 5 September 2014 15:58 (nine years ago) link

iirc, the members of the Dead don't want to listen to any of the Dick's Picks series. Which is great for fans, obviously -- no meddling -- but I can see how artists a little more hands-on like Young and Dylan would be wary about something like that.

(and don't get me started on the Who's lack of a live series...)

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 5 September 2014 16:02 (nine years ago) link

yeah, as with almost everything else, the dead are a unique case. [don't know if i'd call dylan hands on though -- if he's listened at all to any of those bootleg series' i would be kind of surprised]

tylerw, Friday, 5 September 2014 16:16 (nine years ago) link

the best dylan quote ever i read in this article where a journalist was talking about doing an article where he got to hang out w/dylan during the Infidels sessions. he'd obviously heard all the songs and assumed the "Blind Willie McTell" would be the centerpiece of the album. He comes back to hear the final mixes and is horrified that Dylan has left the song off the album and starts to protest, Dylan says "Hey man, don't worry about it, it's just an album, I've made 20 of them"

rap steve (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 5 September 2014 16:18 (nine years ago) link

i think clinton heylin had some conspiracy theory that dylan held back "blind willie mctell" because he knew that not releasing it would immediately catapult it into "classic" status. and it did! (not that it isn't a genuinely great song)

Heylin's Behind the Shades basically repeats the same narrative for each and every Dylan album: that it coulda been something much greater had it been recorded/mixed/sequenced/whatever differently. You come away with the feeling that Dylan's career was just one huge missed opportunity

Yeah, and apparently they don't exactly hang out while on tour if Frank had to send Neil an email about set list suggestions.

one year passes...

After he wraps his current tour in October, Young will continue work on Archives II, the follow-up to 2009's Archives, which collected unreleased material up to 1972. Young says the project will include Dume, an album of songs from the Zuma era, and Hitchhiker, an acoustic LP from the mid-Seventies. The major holdup has been developing technology for presenting the ambitious project: "We're gonna have a website that's, like, 60 years of music in chronological order, with links so you can look at my archives and play the music off the high-res source at the same time." So what's it like to reflect on all he's accomplished over the years? "I don't," he says. "I need to take a break and go to the bathroom."

also no mention of the albums Homegrown, Oceanside/Countryside, or the original Chrome Dreams??

would "Dume" or "Hitchhiker" be another name for one of those?

Chrome Dreams definitely existed, I have a bootleg of it, and it think it might have even gone to test pressing before being pulled

Steve Gunn Mann-Dude (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 5 July 2016 16:39 (seven years ago) link

yeah i think this is just in addition to those other ones -- Dume and I'm assuming Hitchiker are collections that have been recently put together, as opposed to albums that were sequenced and prepped back in the 70s.

but it's just crazy, does neil young even look at the internet? why does he care about a website. put out DUME on vinyl, that's all you need to do. it'll look and sound great!

tylerw, Tuesday, 5 July 2016 16:42 (seven years ago) link

tbh I really love the version of "Hitchhiker" one Le Noise, I love the songs on that where the song quality actually rises to the level of the production and that vers. is p psychedelic

Steve Gunn Mann-Dude (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 5 July 2016 16:44 (seven years ago) link

yeah that one is great ...
probably mentioned above, but neil's people talked about these coming out separately
Four unreleased albums from this period are being rebuilt and will be available in the NYA Special Release Series. Chrome Dreams, Homegrown and Oceanside-Countryside are the three unreleased studio albums. Also from this period is the unreleased Odeon-Budokan live recording produced by David Briggs and Tim Mulligan. These albums initially will be released in vinyl from analog masters as they originally were created for that format.

that '83 tour is a great Neil time-capsule. At the time fans/critics seemed generally confused at what he was going for but in the context of the height of Reagan-era in the US Neil's p much right in stride with what was going on culturally - synthesizers, 50s nostalgia, a general hokiness and cardboard-thin optimism

not really with the exception of typing in proper names of album titles afaict

If you land on the front page, and click the 'back' button in the top left it takes you back to... the page you were on before you went to the Neil Young Archives! In my case: Google, googling Neil Young Archives. This is insanity!

Forgot about this until just now, but I'm knee-deep in this site and trying to swim. Some of the extra memorabilia is frustrating cause there's not enough info on it, like the multiple handwritten tracklists for the 1st album with titles I don't know:

http://images.contentful.com/2okapnzdylk2/1968_0828_02_docs02/9a34d36a680bd9e86ca507cc4ce7215e/1968_0828_02_docs02.png

Based on the way he's set it up, you'd think those weirdo-titles would show up as individual listings, just without a playback option, but nope.

Also, if any of you still use soulseek, I just checked and somebody's got a DVD-RIP of the Hal Ashby Solo Trans Film that downloads quick. It's a great document of that era - during Don't Be Denied the giant video screen starts playing Springfield TV and Harvest barn rehearsal clips from Journey Through, and the crowd flips out. 'I've Got A Problem' is there too, better than the Catalyst Crazy Horse version imo.

three months pass...

I want to share with you that I have made a place for my music to live.

It will also be the place where I live on the web. I won’t be here.

I wanted a place where I could hear my music from the very beginning, from the high school bands I was in, to my latest recordings-audio and visual. I wanted to be able to hear it all, all the sound, all the sound I heard when I made those records and poured my heart and soul into every one, the good and the bad, the great and the ‘should be gone’. They are all there in the new place.

A giant time machine cabinet.

There are files and files for years and years, all full of music. Albums and tracks, bits and pieces, manuscripts and art, film and video. I live there.

Each song is being backed up with the archival material that relates to it and to the creation of it, from song writing to band jams, the history of this music is there. It’s never finished, it is huge and growing. We work night and day expanding the window you can see this archival stuff through.

Come and visit the cabinet and take a look inside. If you like my music, this should be a good place to wander and spend the light and dark hours.

I am here now, reaching out to you, but I wont be here for long, I’ll be there at NYA with my music, new and old. I’ll be on the Timeline. Every day, I will be choosing the song of the day. I will be there writing, ruminatIng and ramblIng. We have a newspaper ( The Times-Contrarian ) full of updates, projects and upcoming events related to my music.

If you want to hear my music and would like to have the option to listen to it with all the depth and glory of high resolution, it will be there. All my new records can be heard there first, before they get released anywhere else. New unreleased albums from the archives, old unreleased albums from the archives. Will always be heard there first.

Our machine is a monster.

Tickets to all our shows will be offered there first, and occasionally we will have surprise live streams from our Hearse Theatre, for those who can’t attend. We just streamed the 5/5/18 NYCH Reunion. Right now we are offering the best seats in the house for a short series of SOLO shows in Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis and Boston to our NYA Community friends and members first, before tickets are made available to the public. After June 1, our presale tickets will be available to members only, so join us if you can.

The place is called NYA.

It stands for neilyoungarchives.com, in the language of the day.

It’s free to everyone now.

As of June 1 there will be memberships available at $1.99 a month, or $19.99 per year.

Parts of NYA will always be free.

You can always be there.

This place is made for you to get the best of me. I appreciate you and want you to always have the first choice.

Hope to see you there.

maybe not the most exciting release, since it's been bootlegged for decades, but it deserves to be in the official canon (and the cleaned up "Campaigner" definitely sounds great).

I'm confused...are they saying only these unreleased tracks were recorded at Plywood Analog? Because the album (according to the liner notes) was recorded at Plywood Digital, and was the second of three (or four, if you count Arc-Weld) albums he recorded digitally before he realized he hated digital recording.

Dumb question, maybe, but would that electric '76 collection they mention in the Songs For Judy liner notes be the same thing as Odeon/Budokan? Or would that be completely different '76 stuff? Either way, I want more of that stuff soon.

Odeon / Budokan is from the Spring 1976 tour. The Electric '76 tour would be from the fall shows. (Fairly doubtful that the latter collection is forthcoming any time soon, but who knows?)

does anyone know much about Oceanside/Countryside?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 4 April 2019 19:01 (five years ago) link

here's what I know:

Neil’s Comes A Time LP went through a variety of iterations before it was finally released in 1978. The original was Oceanside-Countryside, recorded in Fort Lauderdale and Nashville in early 1977. “Oceanside-Countryside was a record I felt really good about,” Neil wrote in a recent Times-Contrarian post. “It was quite a personal record, mostly made up of acoustic songs which had no bass or drums.” The LP was done and dusted – but Reprise suggested that Neil add more instrumentation to the mix. Uncharacteristically, he took his label’s advice and recorded the more fleshed out material that ended up dominating the released Comes A Time. But Oceanside-Countryside promises a more intimate listening experience. Neil calls it “a breath of fresh air.”

wow i've never heard of that, thanks!

Comes a Time (which is a good album for sure)...but it's funny, I sometimes wonder in a couple cases if there were times when Neil was running low on cash...not that they are uninspired albums at all, but Comes a Time and Harvest Moon for how contrary he is usually those both seemed like times when he was like..okay we need something people are going to like - not a problem

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 17:25 (four years ago) link

personally i wish they would go even further back and replicate the look and feel of Winnipeg in the early 1960s, with all the people around town telling stories about Neil, and you can walk around the local venues of the time and see the Squires play. perhaps you could then talk to Neil and join his band, and then play music with Neil for 35+ years as his best friend and songwriting partner. all in NYA!

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 17:28 (four years ago) link

note to self in the year 2065: if you're reading this, maybe it's possible to do what you just wrote above. go check NYA and see if you can patch in an update that does all that, accessible only by looking at small hole cut into the back of the 2019 NYA's file cabinet.

Did he just make some of these up for the hell of it? 'Homefires' in particular sounds like the stuff that's already been around for decades ('Pushed It', the 74 live songs etc). The Stratford show might be the most redundant release ever, considering he already used the footage for the Massey Hall show and the set was more or less identical.

xp i think homefires is essentially a Homegrown companion album. Some stuff has floated around, but there are songs like "Barefoot Floors" and "Frozen Man" that have never been bootlegged, as well as studio versions of "Love Art Blues", "Homefires", "Give Me Strength" etc (and weren't listed on that possible Homegrown release). Maybe some of the aborted CSNY sessions too?

ok so if I've got this timeline right:

-Neil tours early 71, solo sets, hangs out with Briggs who's living in Toronto
-Briggs records the Massey Hall show, tells/yells at Neil that it rules and needs to come out
-Neil hems and haws about a live album, then changes his mind and puts out Harvest instead
-Briggs, as usual, complains

Fast forward a few decades:

-Neil digs out the Massey Hall tapes, admits 'Briggs was right, this rules', puts it out
-wants visuals to go along with, so he takes the footage from the Stratford Theatre shot for a Dutch documentary, puts it together

-2020 rolls along and now Neil decides to put out the Stratford show, the audio and the film again
-claims it's 'better' than Massey, so basically back to ignoring Briggs

I say forget 'em both and stick with this:

one month passes...

This place is slipping; how come I had to learn about this album on Stereogum?

Neil Young has announced a new archival album set for release in 2021. Titled Road Of Plenty, it includes a smattering of ’80s recordings including a live take of the titular “Road Of Plenty” — which later became “Eldorado” on his 1990 album Freedom — captured in Minneapolis with Crazy Horse in 1986. Young believes this to be the best version of the song. Also on the tracklist are a number of studio recordings captured at the Hit Factory in NYC while rehearsing for Young’s 1989 Saturday Night Live — the one with “Rockin’ In The Free World” that rejuvenated Young’s career and essentially launched his ’90s run as a benevolent elder of the grunge movement.

In a message on his Neil Young Archives site, Young explains:

“ROAD OF PLENTY” is a song with a long history, finally morphing into “Eldorado” on the album ‘Freedom’ back in 1990. I tried it out with Buffalo Springfield in 1986 and it was my fault we didn’t get it together at that time and have a reunion, tour and album. I don’t even know why. It was my own fault. I should have done it. Apparently I was distracted by other things at the time. Life was moving fast, perhaps a bit too fast for me to see.

‘Road of Plenty’ lived on with Crazy Horse on the road in a 1986 tour. We have a monster take of it! With the VOLUME DEALERS working again, Niko Bolas has mixed a real masterpiece! How this song escaped is hard for me to believe….

There is a ROAD OF PLENTY album coming in 2021 and it includes that magical night in Minneapolis were the Horse nailed the song. Also included are rarities from that period, including a 17 minute studio version of ’60-0′ with the Bluenotes and the original studio take of ‘Fuckin Up’ — recorded at the Hit Factory in NYC with Poncho, Charley Drayton (bass) and Steve Jordan (drums), the band that played with me on Saturday Night Live when we did ‘Rockin in the Free World’ and ‘No More.’

During the rehearsals for that show, we recorded some amazing music at the Hit Factory in NYC, all of which is in ROAD OF PLENTY. Moving around a lot during that time, I was restless and it shows in this music. Niko and (THE VOLUME DEALERS) have been working on this project now for a while and I think it will be a highlight of 2021…. ROAD OF PLENTY, another album to look forward to here at the Archives!

Hang in there folks, we will get through this all together if we are meant to. Life will never be the same and that’s not bad at all. Look at what we will have…

Love one another and be true to our beautiful EARTH. The future is ours to save.
love!
be well,
ny

So there you go, a lot of information on Road Of Plenty, albeit no official tracklist or release date. Too bad about that Buffalo Springfield reunion that never was!

"Try" from Homegrown is now streamable from the Archives site, and it's just gorgeous: https://neilyoungarchives.com/info-card?track=t1974_1211_04

As expected, Ben Keith and Emmylou Harris make this thing glow. And the major 7th chord he sneaks under the line "We got lots of time" is a really nice touch. Will sit nicely alongside other lighthearted country/folk-mode Neil from that era like "Star of Bethlehem" and "Human Highway"--pure cozy warm-blanket music.

I've been infuriated for years that it's taken so long for Homegrown to come out, but if it's at this caliber all will be forgiven...

I don't know. The Joni Mitchell song throws me off on that. In Waging Heavy Peace, he writes:

It was an LP recorded in audio vérité, if you will, while completely intoxicated on José Cuervo tequila. We would not start recording until midnight, when we were so fucked up we could hardly walk. One night Joni Mitchell came in and did “Raised on Robbery” in the most sexy and revealing version that song ever had. She still refuses to let me release it. I don’t know what the hell she was thinking when she joined us and sang the song. It kicks ass. What the fuck was that about? It was funkier than anything she has ever cut. A total gem!

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 21 September 2020 15:53 (three years ago) link

I've been following this on the Hoffman forums, sort of. It's as exhausting as one might expect.

Regarding TTN, they pointed out that all or almost all of the takes are not marked as previously unreleased, leading one to believe that this is not the Briggs version. Also, Neil was asked about it at one point and he said that version has been lost to time.

yeah, it seems silly that neil (of all people) is so stingy about putting out session outtakes etc. really, even if he didn't want to release that kind of stuff in a big way, it'd be perfect for the Archives site. Yeah the 13 "new" songs is really misleading, One Eye Open otm. There are 13 new songs that have never been released in any for whatsoever, and I think I want to say like 58 alternate and live versions that have been previously unreleased. So I still think it's a pretty cool set, considering the era covered. But as with pretty much anything Neil does, there is a base level of confusion and disappointment that comes with anything he announces.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 22 October 2020 16:11 (three years ago) link

alternate versions in neil's case can be pretty meaningful too, for example you could say that "white line" off homegrown was already a released song on ragged glory but they might as well be different songs

archives update:

10-23-20
Reprise Records, my record company for about 50 years, underestimated the demand for Archives VOLUME II. We were all surprised. It is a beautiful package that I am proud to have made for you. I do feel badly that we did not deliver it to many who were waiting so long for it.

We don’t feel that offering more of a product sold as a limited edition is a good thing to do. Thank you to all who purchased this set.

In 2021 we will be offering more Archives VOLUME II products as Reprise had originally planned, available in all outlets. These, while not the boxed set, will offer all of the of the music and discs with a smaller book. The original large book will be available for separate sale.
Thanks! NYA

Neil Young's release schedule is like the To Watch lists on my streaming services. There are a bunch of things queued up, already too many, but I still keep adding things, and as I add things some of the old things get removed, and then I end up impulsively wanting to watch something that's not on my watch list at all but can't find it so inevitably just end up having to download it somewhere else.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 6 February 2021 16:43 (three years ago) link

I wish he started doing this years, hell DECADES ago instead of cramming so much into so little time, but at least he's doing it. I'm sure mortality has been a good motivator. In the wake of the catalog sales, several of Young's peers have referenced the same thing: it's better to take care of everything while you're still around, and not have the same situation as Prince or Tom Petty where you die, your extended family is left with the responsibility, and it's a complete shit show because everyone hates each other.

two years pass...

The tour came just a year after the success of Harvest transformed Young into a superstar, but he’d recently lost Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten and roadie Bruce Berry to heroin overdoses and was in a state of deep mourning. The shows were famously drunken, sloppy affairs where most of the set came from Tonight’s The Night, which wouldn’t be released for well over a year. “People booed every night,” Lofgren tells Rolling Stone. “They were incensed. They’d yell ‘Play ‘Old Man!’ Where are the hits? We don’t want this!'”

Making matters worse, the Eagles opened up every night with a tight set of harmonies and crowd-pleasing hits like “Take It Easy” and “Desperado.” Melody Maker spoke for many fans with the headline “Go Home Neil Young!” “I paid £2.50 to see Neil Young and came away with a love/hate relationship,” wrote one fan, “Hating Neil Young, but loving the Eagles…All I can say is that the rumors must be true. The real Neil Young is dead.”

wasn't it a UK gig where he played all of the then-unreleased Tonight's the Night, telling the booing fans he'd play something they'd heard before at the end, and then in the encore played TNT, which he'd also opened with, thus fulfilling the "something you'd heard before" quotient of the set?

As for people demanding "a normal show", 9 years ago Neil played Hyde Park in London, and there was this weird thing with shows there that summer where you could get crazy cheap tix to the shows, so the audience was very much not Neil-obsessives, and he played, so I heard, long 20 minute versions of Cowgirl or River, full of discursive guitar work (my dream, basically), and Twitter was awash with people complaining that a Neil Young show would involve long guitar solos. Hilarious.

his cartoon heart expands, then he relaxes by smoking crack (stevie), Saturday, 4 March 2023 10:08 (one year ago) link

In the same way you get people going to Dylan shows in the last 20 years complaining about his voice being different and no acoustic Blowing In The Wind, you def get the same vibe of disgruntled boomer anger at Neil shows.... so let me think back to some UK ones i've been to....

Neil at Hammersmith on the Greendale tour - my first time seeing him - playing Greendale in full... acoustic/electro-acoustic solo with boring ass explanations of the already boring songs between each one... had to side with the crowd here, it sucked and he only kicked into some old ones about 90 minutes in.

He was then back at same venue a few years later, Chrome Dreams II tour? did a 60+ minute acoustic show followed by about 90 minutes of loud as fuck electric jams including The Loner and Roll Another Number! Def. some of the older crowd leaving, couldn't take the volume which was really pushing the PA hard.

Fast forward a few years, The O2 with Crazy Horse - similar to that Hyde Park Show, opened with four or five 10 minute jammers including 3 newies from Psychedelic Pill. some unhappy faces sat around me....

So I think at that Hyde Park show the exact quote after playing about 6 or 7 long and loud electric workouts was “You sad bastards out there stop crying and complaining. This one’s for you sad bastards” and then did Needle & Damage... so yeah he knows what he's doing and that some don't like it at all....always gonna be people who just want Old Man and Heart Of Gold.

Ha, I would’ve loved to have seen this, and I’m bummed I missed that tour (especially since he toured Greendale at least a month or so before the record was out). What’s hilarious is the “boring-ass explanations” — those songs were decidedly on-the-nose, and not exactly open to interpretation. What’s even left to explain?

LMAO, I would've laughed and enjoyed that as a bold FU.

FWIW, The solo acoustic St. Vicar show for Greendale is wonderful. It really comes together beautifully and it's the one time where I thought the whole concept really flourished. I thought the album with Crazy Horse was okay (initial copies were thankfully packaged with a DVD or the St. Vicar show) and the live shows as seen on the recent Return to Greendale were kind of disastrous, coming off as bloated pretentiousness. But when he kept it simple, just him doing this understated and intimate storytelling, filling in the details between songs, it's pretty great.

I saw the Psychedelic Pill tour, the last with Pancho before he retired - only a handful of classics but the epics from Psychedelic Pill sounded glorious live. One of my greatest concert experiences. Helped that I was very close to stage center and Patti Smith opened with an awesome set (my first time seeing her), but Neil & Crazy Horse's performance alone was pretty much everything I would've hoped for.

so there was an initial european run of shows where he played the whole thing over 90 mins.... this was 3 months or so before the album even came out. then he did a world tour with crazy horse, with actors and a painter(?) on stage. i'm totally open to the idea of the solo thing having its own special vibe; but for me as someone who had been listening obsessively to On The Beach, Live Rust, Time Fades Away for 3 or 4 years and was heavily anticipating seeing him live, just getting the greendale thing (and this was without any warning - it wasn't pitched as being that), it hurt me deeply in my heart :'-(

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Sunday, 5 March 2023 01:39 (one year ago) link

it's funny to hear people in here talk about being disappointed by an all-unfamiliar greendale set while i recall being enamoured by an old co-worker's reminisces of seeing one of the time fades away era shows. paraphrasing them: "i was tripping on acid and having a hard time reconciling the boos and angry requests for popular songs with the music they were playing, which i did remember liking even though i didn't know any of it. it all kind of reminded me of "cowgirl in the sand." i was very high, but remember thinking neil was in very poor shape physically. i walked out feeling mildly disappointed."

me listening to time fades away in 2003: golly it would have been neat to be there! lol until you're actually there.

(also 70s neil vs 2000s neil big difference, yes)

I've only seen Neil once, at the Hop On The Farm festival shortly after he resumed touring following his aneurysm. It was great - he had an artist onstage painting along on their canvas while the band played, and they did a majestic A Day In The Life, and Neil was feedback-happy and would hammer his guitar into the amp.

Greendale is Good. I'm not willing to go to bat for it as a masterpiece, but for a late-period (maybe mid-period at this point) experiment from an established, iconic artist, it's pretty impressive. I think I prefer the original solo acoustic performances to the album itself — and it's not like he completely shunned those looking for a "normal concert" on that tour. The second sets were filled with hits, as well as some pretty amazing deep cuts.

xp Probably the same with me. If I can count the St. Vicar performance of Greendale as an album, I would say that DVD and Prairie Wind were the two keepers from the '00s (and FWIW Jonathan Demme's Heart of Gold is excellent as well), but at the same time, I wouldn't call either work one of his masterpieces.

He liked the Beach Boys enough to use "Let's Go Away for Awhile" as the closing theme to Journey Through the Past, and then to put it on the soundtrack album.

archives releases that i most rate: way down in the rust bucket, a treasure, tuscaloosa, tonight's the night at the roxy, and weirdly maybe return to greendale.

also Disc 6 from Archives II, that incredible "Old Homestead" disc - not exactly a standalone but I wish it was

anyway, i don't think the "long may you run" reference is meant as a "lol the beach boys moment"

Agreed! My point was The Bottom Line crowd thinks it is, but Neil is a tru head.

sleeve, I'm sure I listened to Disc 6 at some point, but it didn't grab me as much as Disc 8 (Dume). That one is just incredible to me - I don't think the Powderfinger is better than the released version, but I might like the sound of it better.

But I will listen to Disc 6 tonight.

six months pass...

epic update from Neil about archives vol 3 (now due out next summer it seems ...). Info nabbed from here: https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/neil-young-launches-online-archives-1st-december-2017.688177/page-921

Across the Water, Part 1 and 2: a two disc set ("albums and movies") that represents the '76 tour previously covered by Odeon-Budokan. He mentioned it contains songs from Odeon-Budokan, his shows in Hammersmith, Glasgow, and "somewhere else which I can't remember."

Hitchhikin' Judy: this covers the fall '76 tour ("which was a solo opening and then an intermission and then Crazy Horse'). He wasn't clear on if it contains both the solo acoustic performances and the CH performances, or even if any of the songs that appear on Hitchhiker (or anything else from this era) will appear.

Snapshot in Time: The "audio verite" audio documentary of him rehearsing with Nicolette and Linda before they began recording the songs that are on side B of American Stars 'N' Bars (a version of "Barefoot Floors" is supposed to be one of the tracks here).

Windward Passage: A live album of Ducks songs recorded live in Santa Cruz

Oceanside/Countryside: The album he made before Comes a Time that he recorded solo acoustic before overdubbing additional guitars. There's 12 tracks (of which only "1 or 2 that have surfaced" previously). Many of the original versions of the songs that are on Comes a Time can be found here.

Union Hall: the Give to the Wind Orchestra rehearsal for their show in Miami.

Boarding House 1 and Boarding House 2: now a two disc set, with Boarding House 2 including his session with DEVO that he did in the afternoon before one of his shows at the venue

Sedan Delivery: covers the Rust Never Sleeps period, but "it's different tracks selected from RNS," and it has a "wacky cover."

Coastline: covers the Hawks & Doves and Re-ac-tor era from July 1980-July 1981. It has "a lot of songs on it."

Trans EP and Johnny's Island: another two disc set. The Trans EP will be the vocodor tracks from the album isolated on their own ("it takes you to that place and you stay there").

Evolution: covers Jan 83-Jan 84.

Touch the Night: a compilation of the two shows from Feb 7th, 1984 with Crazy Horse.

Grey Riders: another two disc set that covers June 1984-September 1985.

Road of Plenty: It seems like the focus has shifted to covering the Landing on Water/Life period, based on the tracks Neil mentioned

Summer Songs: This closes out the set.

dang, neil!

thanks for passing that on tylerw! is there anything in there that's particularly unheard or unannounced before? hitchhikin' judy sounds great to me

z_tbd, Thursday, 30 November 2023 23:48 (four months ago) link

a ton of stuff that's unheard ... most of this had been mentioned over the years by Neil, but it was always unclear what would actually be included. This seems to be a more or less finalized plan ... the idea of more DEVO stuff is amazing, but I'm not sure whether it'll just be the "Hey Hey My My" that we've already heard. Would be cool if they did "Sedan Delivery," seems like a no-brainer to me.

so I'm a little bummed out by this -- and please correct me if I'm misremembering tyler -- but i sweat in shakey mcdonough refers to the fact that there were more synth songs that were left off of trans in favor of the conventional rock stuff...i specifically remember a mention of a synth "razor love" which later surfaced on silver + gold

do you remember that?

i think the synth "razor love" was from later — I'm guessing it'll be on that disc entitled "Evolution"

two weeks pass...

I listened to the Dume disc off of Archives II while driving up the coast and visiting Topanga Beach, Point Dume/Zuma Beach, and El Matador State Beach. Really great music and setting experience. It's put me on a big Neil kick.

I was listening to Somewhere Under the Rainbow, the "official" bootleg of a Tonight's the Night show from England. Neil gives all the regular Miami Beach raps, but he goes on an extended rap about how Bruce Berry lost a guitar and he fired him which leads to his death and overdose. Is Neil transposing what happened with Danny Whitten (sent him home from the tour) to Bruce Berry? Regardless, it's devastating.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Saturday, 16 December 2023 13:14 (four months ago) link

According to Shakey, Bruce Berry stole a strat from David Crosby during the Byrds reunion in '73, and Crosby--who'd been led to believe that Berry had it together--fired him. Berry later overdosed on some bad heroin he'd acquired as part of coke deal he set up for another (unnamed) Rock star.

There's a similar story about Danny Whitten stealing a battered acoustic from Danny Hutton from Three Dog Night, who was extra-angry because that was the guitar he'd written his first hit with.

I forgot that from Shakey - it's been a long time since I read it. But given that it's Crosby that fired Berry, it doesn't make sense that Neil is feeling guilty. This is from the Whitten wiki:

Whitten lagged behind, figuring out the rhythm parts, though never in sync with the rest of the group. Young, who had more at stake after the success of After the Gold Rush and Harvest, fired him from the band on November 18, 1972. He gave Whitten $50 ($364 in 2023) and a plane ticket back to Los Angeles. Later that night Whitten died from ingesting a combination of diazepam, which he was taking for severe knee arthritis, and alcohol, which he was using to try to get over his heroin addiction.

Which is almost exactly the story that Neil gives in his rap about Berry, but replacing Whitten not being able to play guitar with Berry losing a guitar. Innaresting.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Saturday, 16 December 2023 14:16 (four months ago) link

the 73 byrds reunion didn't tour at all so not sure where Berry was supposed to be stealing from, the studio or Crosby's house? maybe from a Crosby/Nash gig around the same time?

buzza, Saturday, 16 December 2023 14:25 (four months ago) link

Iirc, it was in the studio during the album sessions, as Berry had been hired as Crosby's personal tech/roadie.
