true or false: ganzmord's monolithic in darkness album is the black metal album of the year.

answer: TROO!

scott seward, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 22:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Judging by the songs on that myspace, that doesn't really sound evil or scary. It kind of sounds like my TV is broke and someone is working on the street outside.

I've been listening to the new DHG. I like the weird parts, but the actual black metal parts are too thinly produced, especially the drum sound. It's kind of cool, but I'm not as in love with it as the rest of the metal dudes on here seem to be.

nah, nobody really did anything. just seems like there aren't that many people on there who like blood-soaked mayhem and death and wholesale slaughter that much. i like tons of senseless repetitive third-rate death metal that wouldn't know a hook or a melody from a gaping chest wound! but whenever i hear anything frilly and pretty i'll be sure to post about it on the girl metal thread. i mean the rolling metal thread. :)

I've been listening to the new Watain a bit more, and while I still like it a lot, I can't say they're doing anything really fascinating that Immortal weren't doing back at the turn of the millennium. I hope this new Glorior Belli is good, though, because I have a lot of faith in French black metal right now and I'd hate for them to be the band to blow their home country's winning streak.

yay a thread for people like me, run by people like me, talking about music made for people like me!

They're called Accidental Suicide, the album is titled Deceased, it's from 1992, the cover art was done by the bassist from Cradle of Filth, and they're on Grind Core records. Lots of cookie monster growling and killer guitar solos.

i 'knew' those dudes via tape-trading, i'm pretty sure (i have their demo around somewhere, unlabelled with no cover so it usually takes a listen to remember what the fuck it is). did eric greif produce that? he produced fucking everything from that scene (milwaukee area) - morbid saint, morta skuld, viogression...

also i just got coffins "other side of blasphemy." plug ugly autopsy/winter/c. frost worship. and the tondra/nordic mist split, two bands featuring nunslaughter and minch (!) members, both seemingly named after drink mixers, both sounding more or less like celtic frost.

oh yeah, and entety "cadaveric necrogrind" is like carcass without the brains. or with the brains SPLATTERED ON YER FUCKIN WALL.

anyone like SCEPTER? or are you all PUSSIES?

Black eyes stare at the sun
Burning wheel in the sky
Frozen hearts turn to fire
(As) sunset bleeds into night
Energy bolts for power and spell
Are harnessed from death and despair
Weapons of war are begging for blood
UNLEASH THE FUCKING SLAYER!

Never lost never drawn
Never to be guiled
Harder than tempered steel
Born to lose live to win
Fuck'em till you die
Your only thought is to kill
When you're obsessed by metal

Slave and master side by side
Or one beneath the other
Only one of them can have the power
Whether by the demons
Or of the burning sword
They say the same get on your knees
And suck your fucking lord

Obsessed by metal
Obsessed by death
Obsessed by black desire
Obsessed by power beyond my control
Obsessed by fucking fire
Obsessed by fury
Obsessed by hatred
Obsessed by vengeance and lust
Fuck off and die 'cause we gotta live
WE ARE OBSESSED BY METAL

scott seward, Thursday, 21 June 2007 04:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Hrmm, so uhh, is it just me or is that Ganzmord song basically polka with some chaotic grindy bits between verses? I guess it doesn't swing enough for that to be quite true, but this song is way too happy to be evil. I did like the Bad Brains section. Could do without the Death-style bridge.

I think there's something in me that in effect strips off all the noise and screaming and takes the melody/beat to the fore. This kind of sucks, because it makes a lot of these evil bands sound surprisingly happy. Often rockabilly-like (Heretic come to mind)
Maybe I've simply lost my black metal listening-skills. [insert bit about "faggots don't like $band it hurts their pussys"]
I just don't feel the grim any more!
I did consider going to see Nunslaughter live, but suspect I'd be sick of it in 10 minutes, just like I was with the (admittedly funny) live record I used to have.

So, fuck it all. Thrash is where it's at. I'm gonna go put on some Terror Squad! Discö bloody discö!

Øystein, Thursday, 21 June 2007 04:36 (sixteen years ago) link

ganzmord makes me happy! there is some GREAT noise on the album. i still like the stuff from the split though too. the stuff from the demo on the album is the most over-the-top skreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee noise. in a year, he'll probably be scoring operas and forming bm supergroups.

DOLLAR GORE RULES.

How about free gore? My husband did security at one of the Metal Fests in Milwaukee (Hawkwind, do you live there?) eons ago and came home with a stack of free CDs. One title I'll never forget was Inbreeding The Anthropophagi (had to look up "anthropophagi") by Deeds of Flesh who might be too girlie for this thread. Also remember a song called "Chunks in the Shower" which AMG tells me is by Deeds of Flesh as well. But other "chunks" titles came up and I came across this album by one Broken Hope:

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:dcfwxq9hld6e

Titles seem promising beyond "She Came Out In Chunks": "Coprophagia" (know that word!), "Hobo Stew," "Decimated Genitalia," and, my favorite, "Felching Vampires." No nun rape, though, unless "Preacher of Sodomy" preaches thusly. And you gotta love that parental advisory sticker.

Aside: you should check out nunsploitation cinema if you haven't already. Start with Alucarda and then move your way down. I can't get enough of the stuff.

going to have to check out the latino thrash links later, but i remember in the late 80s when the mexican dudes started getting into the scene in a big way, some killer bands and many of them didn't get past the demo stage. sadistic intent and nausea/terrorizer did, though.

you know what i REALLY like is the stormcrow/sanctum split that 20 buck spin sent me. but i'm a sucker for a d beat. stormcrow and sanctum call their music WAR CRUST. which is a great tag. i wonder what last fm would come up with if i typed that in.

dud of the week: seizure crypt album. dudes trying to revive old skool (but not that old) NYHC but it's really anemic. don fury production and all that, but so flat. half sung/half rapped (kinda) shit. i'd rather listen to judge. or madball. or sick of it all. definitely did NOT provide the "unbridled crossover ferocity" that it advertised. where's my token entry reunion! (there probably was one. what the hell do i know? i think everyone has reunited four times by now.)

scott seward, Friday, 22 June 2007 14:50 (sixteen years ago) link

NYHC is so often anaemic and weak if it's not done right. I can see why a lot of HC fans just write off the whole genre. I mean I do most of the time! I like old Agnostic Front though. Their 3rd album sucked so much shit I never bothered with anything after.

scott seward, Friday, 22 June 2007 15:06 (sixteen years ago) link

It was metallic but in a really feeble and powerless way. Like a lot of crossover. Even good crossover stuff like DRI and COC has songs that just fall flat and 3rd AF is a whole album of that.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 22 June 2007 15:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm not a big crossover fan though, in general.

i really like this band a lot. they sound like DRI. and they have a song on this album about Capenter's "The Thing" called..."The Thing".

Antarctica winter 1982 research was going steady, And there was nothing much to do
In the distance a lone wolf flees, But no one knows the carnage that this animal will bring
VIOLENE UNFOLDS
Assaulted by Norwegian guests theyll have to die like all the rest
SEARCHING THROUGH SNOW
Discovering the frozen corpse of something thats not of this earth
THE CREATURE COMES FORTH
An evil makes its presence known attempting to create a clone
NOWHERE TO GO
And something grim is at hand something in this arctic land
The Thing, No one knows the hell it will bring
Its got you from the inside, Its taking over your life
Intensions so unexplained, Until the gets a hold of your brain
Hiding till the damage is done, Killing them off one by one
The sense of fear begins to grow, and no one has protection from this dangerous infection
Their fates in the hands of the unknown, and nerves are quickly blowing while the thing is steadily growing
Whom to trust theyll never now
And nothing can contain a creature of the unexplained
Half the crews dead more to go
Somehow its got to stop and now McReady's getting pissed off
Now theres nothing left to do
Discovering whose human is what this final test will prove
Deadly results are what this test brings
But its the final hope to unveil this gruesome being
VIOLENCE UNFOLDS
The test was the solution now its time for execution
SEARCHING THROUGH SNOW
And now Blair is the last Thing left Hell fight until his dying breath
THE CREATURE COMES FORTH
But this will be the final clash and kills it with a giant blast
NOWHERE TO GO
Our heros fate is finally sealed
The camp is lost The Thing is killed (or is it?)

Impaler do a song called "Black Leather Monster." Is that a cover of The Plasmatics' song on Metal Priestess?

I did a paper on the PMRC in high school and picked the NASTIEST lyrics I could find to quote. I think the winner was a song called "Golden Showers" (I think) by The Mentors. Something about leaving a shit tower on someone's face. It felt sooooooo good writing the phrase "shit tower" in a formal high school paper. My teacher wrote "yuk!" in the margins. I got an A.

You might still be able to pick up the 2nd and 3rd live cdrs of Whitehorse(the 1st one is on that 20 buck spin cd).
The Monarch is great. Compiles two vinyl releases and a tour single. Also pick up the 1st double cd "666". It's killer!

These are the kind of people one might see at the guitar store, the music store or anywhere else for that matter and think to oneself, "Man, what a dipshit! Grow up, retard."

Then, one might go home and put on their album and say, "Damn, these guys ROCK!"

i check them out if the description sounds interesting. like later i intend to dig graves in the sky cause that sounds like my bag.

anyway... does kreator count for this thread circa "coma of souls?" i just rebought it on cd and it's pretty killer. but around this point they're starting to look less like guys who'd get arrest for breaking beer bottles in a cemetary and more like guys who paint houses for a living and get arrested for having one spindly weed plant in their back window.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 28 June 2007 04:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Defiant use of as few notes as possible. Almost makes it sound like he's just playing "Louie Louie" instead of the trash that's on the CD. I bet Striborg can't actually play "Louie Louie." He would self-destruct.

Uh, yeah - I produced Accidental Suicide...must have been in '91 or thereabouts. I don't know whatever happened to them. They were nice guys and were friends with Viogression, I believe. Their album was out on Peaceville/Deaf. I got really busy with Death's Human release & tour and I lost track of AS. I recall that their singer was a nice guy - big as hell but soft spoken. One dude had Satan's bangs, his hair was so unique. We had to play with their guitar actions because they tuned down so low.

anyone heard the new sodom reunion album? final sign of evil or something like that. angelripper/witchhunter/grave violator line-up, covering the first ep plus songs that were allegedly written at the time and it was recorded/mixed by the band's webmaster for some reason. i haven't heard it - i want to! - but the review on maelstrom said something to the effect that it was "fucking terrible and you'll love it."

listening to cast in stone by venom, it occurs to me that someone should go back in time and take mantas' fucking pantera and sepultura albums away from him. this shit's kind of embarassing, JUGGA-JUGGA-JUHJUGGA riffs and cronos sounds exhausted. also, WHERE'S THE BASS? i mean, i can HEAR bass but it's coke zero to at war with satan's ginger beer. this is pretty shit, i'm glad i only paid a couple of bucks for it. plus listening to the second disc's "updated" versions of old venom songs is going to be painful and maybe laughable.

i did get messiah's hymns to abramelin used, too, which is pretty killer death/thrash stuff. i want lists of good old death/thrash i might have missed. i'll recommend the r.u. dead? cd here cause it's killer. and they used to be the german band poison, who had one great death/thrash/doom ep and a bunch of subpar demos.

ok, goodnight.

listening to liers in wait "spiritually uncontrolled." pretty good swede death metal recorded in 1990 or so, yeah dismember and entombed influences with a little bit of grindy american death metal leaking in. they're swedish, so their "mean, nasty, ugly, evil" appearance centers around black jeans, leather jackets, sunglasses and the faintest hint of a beard. maybe that's all they can grow over there, i dunno. but it's a good ep, apparently they later became diabolique who i know nothing about but they're listed as "doom/gothic/rock" or something on metal-archives.

THINGS I HAVE ENJOYED RECENTLY THAT FIT IN THIS THREAD:

sacramentary abolishment - river of corticone
pre-axis of advance/revenge/rites of thy degringolade black/death/grind stuff like a more bizarre beherit/blasphemy thing. or like the bands they eventually became. weird, weird sci-fi/post-apocalypse concept lyrics.

barbatos - rocking metal motherfucker
street punk metal from japan. dumbb.

dr. shrinker - grotesque wedlock
80s death metal dumbassery with early grind influence. pretty good WISCANSIN stuff.

also been listening to manilla road a lot. still. they're not really nasty or evil, maybe a little mean and ugly. but definitely metal. their first album was called METAL, man.

i've got a stupid question. what else sounds like 'reign in blood'? or what should i get next if i love it? metal is so huge, idk much about the sub-genres. i haven't really heard any of the classics, not even metallica! i love the fuck-you lyrics on RIB and the fact that i can still understand them. growls are cool but i need to ease into them. something else nasty and unhinged but not self-conscious about it. and evil. i like 'south of heaven' too, it kicks ass but it's more uh melodic i guess.

Not the same, but similar in quality and importance: try Voivod Killing Technology and Dimension Hatross.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 27 September 2008 21:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Also recommended as it has the exact qualities you seem to be looking for (big hooks, evilness and understandable vocals):
Samael "Ceremony Of Opposites"

Siegbran, Saturday, 27 September 2008 21:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Does anyone know if Samael still performs any of that classic old material? They are playing my fest here in Portland next month and I'm not quite sure what to expect...

Two of my favorite Slayer-iffic albums are Necrophobic The Nocturnal Silence and Vader The Ultimate Incantation. But both channel it into death or black/death and the vocals sound accordingly...

scott seward, Sunday, 28 September 2008 21:28 (fifteen years ago) link

um, that is not a response to the slayer question.

every time i hear a new nu-thrash album that sounds slayer-ish i always like it, but then i listen again and realize how much further most bands would have to go to REALLY sound like reign in blood or whatever. that blood tsunami album with faust on drums comes to mind. it's good and all, but there is really no comparison.

scott seward, Sunday, 28 September 2008 21:31 (fifteen years ago) link

i enjoyed some of Entombed's latter-day Slayer impressions. morning star and inferno are cool records. just don't get the last album, whatever it was called. pretty stinky. and you can understand all the words for sure!

this track is from inferno:

scott seward, Sunday, 28 September 2008 21:42 (fifteen years ago) link

one thing about that last album though! and this is sad, but it opens with the totally killer slayerific title-track "Serpent Saints" and then gets suckier after that. which is a shame, cuz if all the songs were half as great as serpent saints the album would have ruled.

here's a live serpent saints:

scott seward, Sunday, 28 September 2008 21:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Samael still play Baphomets Throne and Black Trip if I recall correctly.

Siegbran, Sunday, 28 September 2008 21:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Just get Entombed "Left Hand Path" then, it doesn't sound like a Slayer copy but is ten times better than any recent Entombed. Can't imagine any Slayer fan disliking that. The guitar sound alone flattens whole city blocks.

Siegbran, Sunday, 28 September 2008 22:04 (fifteen years ago) link

speaking of Satan, here's a cool live clip from 1986:

scott seward, Sunday, 28 September 2008 22:06 (fifteen years ago) link

everyone should own left hand path. this is true. i was just being specific as far as the question went. i'm actually a fan of early/middle/late when it comes to entombed. i love left hand path, clandestine, wolverine blues, uprising, and morning star. which is a pretty good stretch of time. (and if you go back to nihilist stuff, then an even bigger stretch of time)

scott seward, Sunday, 28 September 2008 22:10 (fifteen years ago) link

speaking of the nwobhm, why don't i own any tank albums? i love that shit. i better get my act together.

scott seward, Sunday, 28 September 2008 22:16 (fifteen years ago) link

there's a metal mind box set, dude! i've got the first one on LP, some euro press where the vinyl's a little bit thicker than a flexi.

i enjoyed some of Entombed's latter-day Slayer impressions. morning star and inferno are cool records.

second this. esp. "morning star," "inferno" has some rilly dumb lyrics and the production's a little crap.

okay, so i knew grave were back together. and i knew they had a new album or five out. but i didn't know that "back from the grave" had a second disc with all of their 80s demos on it, so i bought the shit out of it wednesday. and it brings back memories, man, hearing them after listening to nihilist (pre-entombed) demos for like a year straight and then "anatomia corporis humani" kinda blowing those out of the water for guttural basement creep. scandinavians really had death metal locked down for a while there. then they had to go and ruin it with "melody."

funebre, from finland, were pretty good too. i always wondered why euro guitar tones were just so evil back then. i think they made their guitar pedals out of bog bodies and uranium or something.

(was gonna post this in rolling metal but they're too busy pretending the new enslaved is GREAT and then there's the amon amarthing.)

funnily enough i've had songs by BLOOD going through my head lately. mostly from their "spasmo paralytic dreams" demo, because that's the one i got by them first. the immortal line "you feel like a chicken in a cow-house - like a rebel!" always sticks with me.

listening to DEMOLITION HAMMER again right now, though. "mammoth charges with malice/tries to feast upon his death/armed with a broken rampike, impale its massive chest." fucking best, wordiest ridiculoid thrash metal lyrics ever. "lead-forged exit wound exempted me from/melancholic psychosis! cybernetic annihilation, finally set me free."

I've been really getting into Beherit's "Drawing Down the Moon" album- the way that album is mixed is so, so weird- tons of vocal processing that's really loud, breakdowns to guitars that are incredibly quiet and tinny and tiny in the mix, super weird record.

Also jamming:

Toxic Holocaust "An Overdose of Death"
Municipal Waste "Hazardous Mutation"
Behexen - pretty much all of it
and old Bathory

Does that Impiety album have the annoying digital brick-wall compression the previous 2 album had? Really diminished the listening pleasure, esp compared to the older stuff like Skullfucking Armageddon.

These guys are in league of their own live. Really hope they'll manage come around these parts this year.

Siegbran, Saturday, 6 June 2009 11:29 (fourteen years ago) link

i would LOVE to see them live, and i hardly care about seeing anyone live.

as far as the new album goes, sadly, i've gotten so used to bad metal production that it barely registers with me anymore. all i know is that i put the album on yesterday while i was at work and it kinda singlehandedly made everything else new i've heard all year sound flabby and slow. i'm gonna listen again today at maximum volume and i'll take note of production/cd sound.

that's my problem with the brick wall stuff. i CAN'T play it at top volume because it just gets all distorted and sounds like hell. but not the good kind of hell.

Scott, I think you're really gonna like the debut CD by Warbeast. It's called Krush the Enemy, it's on Phil Anselmo's Housecore label and he produced it, too. It features the former vocalist for Rigor Mortis, who kinda sounds like a cross between Steven Rathbone of Lair of the Minotaur and Oderus Urungus, and the music is pure gutter thrash.

basically half-assedly liveblogging this as I bang my head but fuckin A I didn't know Heinous Killings was a full band now with live drums! wasn't hung with barbwire a one-man-band affair? anyway, as a full band, they are fucking savage. the song titles are as offensive as ever but there's no lyric sheet, which is a relief, since I think I may have thrown away hung with barbwire in a fit of skeevedness. but damn! the heinous killings tracks on this cap off 18 tracks of pure goregrind madness! fucking awesome split! grind grind grind grind grind

Defcon 4

You ever see the movie Defcon 4? Yeah, me neither. Or wait, did I? Eh, probably. Who knows anymore. I’m so jaded when it comes to kitschy apocalyptica. And my memory is poor. And I’ve seen a million movies. Today at work I was emptying one of those big outdoor ashtrays. You know the ones. A Rubbermaid. Jesus, Rubbermaid, there’s a movie for you. Thousands of Ohioans living and dead could tell the whole dirty story while gritting their teeth at the memory of the loss and the misplaced pride. What, like the end of the world hasn’t actually come yet? You need futuristic neon dystopias to tell the tale of man’s folly? Take a look around, buddy. Anyway, this big-ass plastic ashtray with the gaping metal mouth was beyond full. The butts crammed to the top formed a single tube of soggy and yet hardened nic fit. It took forever to get them out of there. And I couldn’t help but feel like I had seen this movie before. And I had. In a way. When I was 16 and wiping shit off of supermarket bathroom walls. When I was 26 and on my hands and knees cleaning mouse shit off of dirty deli floors. And when I was 36 and changing stinky diapers by myself in a small damp house far from everyone and everything that I knew and trying to embrace the love I felt for my son, while, at the same time, ducking dark storm clouds of isolation and fear.
Which is just another way of saying that Defcon 4 are a decent Boston punk band that mixes doom and crust and sharpened Eyehategod teeth all in the service of…what? I don’t know. Another pennant? Hatred of Ben Affleck’s street cred? All I know is, from the area of the universe that gave me SSD and Converge, I expect MORE pain. And MORE convincing wails of torment. Their stylistic twists and turns aren’t as compelling as the more advanced cosmic crust moves of Kylesa or Baroness either. But, hey, they are young, right? I have no idea, are they? Well, they sound young. And kinda peppy even. And hanging out with Steve Austin was a good move too. Their record sounds smooth. I’m just not feeling very smooth. I give any young band the same advice I gave a guy I met last week who only has two months to live (gallbladder): It’s never too late to become a reader. You might not want to start with War & Peace though.

not 'old', but kind of obsessed with the band Fluids lately. many call this the "Mortician-clone", some pejoratively, some in praise, but it's somewhat unfair. the main similarities are that they have programmed drums (but much quieter and more subtle than Mortician's endless battering ram), really sub-zero detuned guitar/bass and the vocals aren't too different, but riff-wise, they like to play hella fucking slow, whereas Mortician often do fast deathgrind that can be an incomprehensible blur of power chords at times. Fluids like to slow it down and pummel. Like Mortician also, no solos.

but they also do a lot of synth work, sometimes between songs or as an intro to songs, and it's unsettling. oh, and the final similarity is the soundbites, though Fluids doesn't take theirs from movies, but real life horrors.

if you're into things like complex riffing or, idk, significant variance, look elsewhere, but when I'm in the mood for this oppressive shit, it's pretty great.

this is basically why i don’t like them nearly as much as mortician. kicking off with your record with a guy reading his suicide note before presumably offing himself is just not my idea of a good time.

always loved horror movies, always hated faces of death…

Nean, thanks for posting Fluids. I could live w/o the intros too but I am sitting here at a laptop banging my head with joy to these fucking grotesque riffs.

Good shit! I always liked Suffer the Gestalt or whatever a lot too. And Black Millennium had its moments, think it gets downrated because he pretending to kill himself before it was releases or something.

this makes my top ten of the year. if i had one. love the atmosphere. and its from the states too! which surprises me for some reason. maybe because i love it. but there are people hidden away doing good things here. hiding. hiding makes sense.

There's a new Petrification album coming out in February. They're from Portland, Oregon, but they're on Svart, a label from Finland. Anyway, here's "Twisted Visions of Creation":

oh man that petrification video speaks to me. also, luring sounds great.

this is kind of 'random old metal' but i think fits this thread. i got curious about seeing what kevin drumm interviews were floating around out there, and in one of them he mentions this band from edmonton, revenge.

i never get tired of this record. someone should reissue it. unheralded sludge classic! i might have heralded it in Decibel Mag at the time. definitely one of my fave rock records of the 21st century.

one of my bleaker reviews! from 2007? my economic message is almost Trumpian here. who knew? i was in a bad mood.

Defcon 4 - The Bad Road
