Kylie Minogue: Classic or Dud?

Well? Vertically-challenged talentless Aussie slapper or better than a good date with Britney Spears?

Ally, Tuesday, 17 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I can still remember that "I Should Be So Lucky" song better than I can the "Loco-Motion" remake. And I like what I remember of it as well. And, unlike her ex-beau Mr. Hutchence, she's never been found dead as a result of a bizarre solo sex game, though I can understand how that would elevate her in some eyes.

Hmm...maybe not a classic, but no dud. I mean, when it comes to vertically challenged Australians, better her than those Silverchair rugrats. Although maybe they're tall now.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm gonna say Classic because of how much better she is than all the recent Classic or Dud choices. (Thanks, Ally, for saving us from another difficult Eggnoodley Commie Anti-Music or Eggnoodley Commie Anti-Music question.) I've only heard five Kylie songs - "I Should Be So Lucky", the cover of "Loco-Motion" which I also can't really remember, the murder-by-the-river duet with Nick Cave, "Spinning Around" and "Your Disco Needs You" - but I'll take them over all the Royal Trux albums I just sold.

She's definitely too small though.

Otis Wheeler, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Although totally dud for me, she was clever enough to churn out commercial poop again. I hope her clothes are sold on the basis of how much they weigh. It'll only cost her a few pennies to dress like a successful Traci Lords.

my fool name, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dud. Not really for the songs which are just okayish pop songs, but more for the endless obssesion of the British music and lifestyle press with her. She isn't *that* interesting.

Omar, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I would say Dud because she reminds me of lasses with perms, Danniii,'Especially for You', Streetfighter and 'The Hitman + Her'.

I would say NOTADUD for 'Confide in me' and that video where she gets naked in a Barberella stylee.

But not classic

Geordie Racer, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Not absolutely a dud, but overrated. Really really overrated, the pop equivalent of GYBE or someone in terms of overratedness. Her various reinventions have been plodding, generally, and "I Should Be So Lucky" isn't even much good. The recent return-to-pop stuff has been weak, on a level with Geri and Emma Bunton, not even as good as Louise's comeback singles. That said once she became the biggest thing in the SAW stable she got some of their choicer songs - "Better The Devil You Know" for instance - so it's not all bad.

Tom, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think some of the SAW singles are classic, especially "I Should be so Lucky" and "Shocked". But everything else is extremely iffy. Not bad, but just not lovable. Her latest singles try to recapture the spirit of the SAW era, but there's none of the enthusiasm there. I thought "Spinning Around" was lifeless. I really couldn't categorize Classic or Dud. There should be a middle ground of "Eh" in there somewhere...

Nicole, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'll answer my own question now (and yes, Otis, I'm always good to ruin the indie bent of this board): classic, but I think if I was coming from the other 8 billion countries where Kylie is considered famous it'd be a different story. As it is, she's absolutely nothing in America, so it makes her feel underrated for me. Your Disco Needs You is one my favorite singles going right now.

Here's a question: a lot of people I know who classify themselves as pop fans don't particularly care for Kylie, while a lot of indie fans I know overrate her. Did her Nick Cave/Manics collabs ruin her for the pop set with her annoying "realness"?

Next up has got to the Traci Lords: Classic or Dud, except I fear I'm the only person round here with her album ;)

Ally, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

tom, you really love throwing around that "(genre) version of gybe!" comparison. ;)

fred solinger, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I know, it's crap, isn't it. I'm feeling really groggy and ill today so I wasn't up to thinking of another overrated band except for GYBE ;) Beck maybe.

Tom, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I heard she's gonna do an episode of Neighbours! Probably Madge's funeral...Her songs were okay. Now, she is like one of those Chris Evan's guest people...so pretty dud.

james edmund L, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ooh, your mention of Madge reminds me that Mike from Neighbours is actually kicking Charlene's ass popularity-wise in the States.

And deservedly so, since Memento is much more fun than anything Kylie has done lately.

Nicole, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It's got to be a question of perspective (geographically, anyway). In the UK, I can see how she'd be an "eh," as you guys get more than your fill of her songs and her appearances and her social life...but here in the U.S.? ZILCH. We got to see "Loco-motion" on MTV a few times way (I mean WAY) back when, had to hunt down a domestic release of "Confide in Me" before it disappeared forever, and have been desperately slapping every single from "Breathe" (fantastic) to "Your Disco Needs You" (genius) on homemade mix CDs so that we can get the word out that she's still alive and still making music and still at least somewhat deserving of an audience in the States. So count your lucky stars if you're sick of Kylie--I'd love to be sick of her. Classic all the way--in the U.S.A.

Max Jones, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Is there a law that all Australians must be in Neighbours at some point in their lives?

Ally, Wednesday, 18 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yep! Neighbours has produced so many popstars...Steffan Dennis, Craig McSomething (Henry), Jason Donavon, even the twins released a single (I think). Who will be next?

james edmund L, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Even arch-smuggo Clive James appeared in it once.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Kylie Kylie Kylie: DUD! DUD! DUD! She is so shit. completely awful apart from two moments of brilliance: "I should be so lucky" and "Where the Wild Roses Grow". Everything else is sooooo bad. And this rebranding of her as some kind of sex symbol is laughable - does anyone find her attractive? She's like a porcelein doll, not a human being. She'd probably shatter. Gah.

PihkalBoy, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh, I think "Where the Wild Roses Grow" is easily one of the most overrated songs of all time. It's the 2nd worst song on Murder Ballads. It was just a stunt duet -- gimmicky and tacky. As far as Kylie duets go, even Kids is better. And I say this as more of a Nick Cave fan than a Kylie fan.

Nicole, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ah yes, the singing budgie. Classic because who knew budgie's could sing? The longevity of her career is more perplexing than Madonna's. Her early hits are all shite, albeit catchy shite, recent hits unremarkably bland. Redeeming features: (a) "Better the Devil You Know" - excellent single, even better video, (b) on-going propensity to fall out of her clothes, though I can't say I fancy her, but I appreciate the gesture, and (c) giving Nick Cave ONE redeeming feature by singing with him. Plus I liked how said duet's video had the (unwitting?) appearance of a Timotei shampoo commercial, Kylie walking wistfully through the grass with the sun in her hair, etc.

AP, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I must be the only person who actually liked the Impossible Princess album she did before she decided to go full-fledged pop again. As mature artistic makeovers go it beat the living shit out of Ray Of Light. Now Kylie's bigger here than she's ever been really, but everything I've heard off Light Years has left me cold, like it's all a dispassionate attempt to make the SAW/handbag equivalent of "classic pop".

Tim, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

No, Tim, I like that album too, unfortunate I can't get a copy of it anywhere.

On the attractiveness front: I've always found her terribly UNattractive, actually. I never understood that. I like her for her music and NOWT ELSE. She just looks a bit...I don't know, nostrilly and she's very, very tiny.

Ally, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Would concur with Tom on her being overrated, but what's interesting to me is why she's overrated and how that came about. It always seems to me that she's liked by people who value "timelessness" in chartpop, the opposite of my / Tom's approach, so for us the fact that "I Should Be So Lucky" et al could have been written in 1969 or now just as much as in the late 80s is a reason to be wary of her (the early 90s were, as Tom hints, her best period). There's a tendency to praise that aspect of chartpop while denouncing the genuinely ephemeral stuff as "trash", while for me the more of-the- moment chartpop is, the more points there are in its favour; hence why the greatest SAW singles for me are Mel and Kim's Yuppie Trilogy and, of course, "I'd Rather Jack". By comparison Kylie's stuff of the time is "classic" in the worst sense.

I think her new video is nearly perfect, the dancing on it is really good. It's like dancing is being constantly alluded to! What kind of a triumph is that? I like the men dressed like Kraftwerk, and the background which is like Metropolis. I like the 'nostalgia for the future.' I like the car, I had a toy car exactly like that, it was my favourite because the doors opened upwards. I like the way her body is all perfect and symmetrical, as if it were computer generated. I like to think that she was airbrushed neatly in photoshop. I like the white dress that doesn't matter if it gapes open, because her body is completely false. Now that I reread this, I feel I'm giving too much credit to Kylie herself. I don't respect her more because of this video and song.

While I try not to delude myself into believing me to be an oracle of popular culture,I do know for certain one thing. If someone claims to be an artist, they should be capable of producing evidence of thatclaim. If I say I'm a painter, you'd want to see my..paintings.If I'm a singer you'd wnt to hear me sing etc etc.Now here's where the Pro-Anti Kylie thing comes in.As most Pop music is now produced through "Production",Smoke and Mirrors, one doesn't need to have artistic merit to be successful.Just an unshakeable belief in yourself and an unquenchable desire to be noticed. It seems most of the "artists" who appear in todays glossies seem to fall into this category.I always try to make the distinction between Artist and Celebrity. To be fair to Kylie she a classic CELEBRITY.But as an Artist she doesn't of course register on the scale.

Well I used to like Kylie - when I was about 10. Now I cant stand her. I too think she is completely overrated. All she can do is flash her bum, which has recently became a lot more pert. Mmmmm..... And her lips and her boobs and her personality, I reckon are one thing and one thing only - FALSE!!!

Years ago she did not have big lips. Her right eyebrow did not touch her hairline like it does now, it was actually lower than the left one if you look at pics! Her boobs miraculously grew when she was seeing Micheal Hutchence, and her bum doesn't have a crease on it!!! Every bum has creases when you stand up. I dont rate her music either. I agree Better than the Devil you Know was OK, but her recent efforts such as at the Brit awards when she had her ar*e hanging out again, she wanted to be 'cool' by mixing her song with Blue Monday. SOoooo wasn't good.

She is an overrated, plastic, old tart who wants to get some clothes on and give women dignity, not make them look like they are gagging for it. Hopefully she'll go BACK out of fashion, AND SOON!!!!!!!

Felicity, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

She has a wonderful body but sadly only her mouth makes music.
If Im actually supposed to like her singing then shes a dud, if your comparing her to Spears shes classic.

Mr Noodles, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Put Yourself In My Place is absolute classic. as is the title track to Light Years..

Wyndham Earl, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I think she looks beautiful, like a sculpture. I was a bit disappointed when I found out some was plastic surgery but then the plastic surgery-d parts are the dumbest - she could have done okay without the lips and breasts, I mean, it's the shiny smooth skin I think. She has also made her music kind of 'match' herself; I mean, it's superficial and shiny and surfacy. She is like a perfect package. However, I don't actually understand how it's possible to be like that. It's quite disappointing seeing her on Top of the Pops, when strands of hair come loose and she's wearing leather and you can see the grain.

kylie's great singles that have already been mentioned: confide in me, put yourself in my place, shocked, better the devil you know

kylie's GREAT, CONSTANTLY OVERLOOKED single: what do i have to do?!

kylie overall: classic. since when has it been about 'artistry' and 'singing'? i'm shocked that this stuff has come up.

More proof of how much criticism can be disarmed by becoming a Gay Icon. Every lapse of taste can be explained as ironic, self- consciously cheesy or deliberately camp. Critics who would normally be contemptuous of such mediocre talent are frozen by fear of appearing unhip or looking like they "don't get it".

I didn't know anything about Kylie until early this year and I think she's scary and fabulous. There's this part where she shrieks in "More more more" that sends chills down my spine.

People seem to be comparing The Minogue with Britney Spears. Personally, I think there's no comparison.

Both of their music style's is of course not their own, but Britney has this 'thing' about her that makes you want to watch her. She does actually look like what she does in the photos. And when people go on and on, criticising her about wearing skimpy stuff - we have to remember she is only 20 and has to entertain. However, Kylie is nearly 34 and is still prancing around like an old slut with her plastic, pinned up arse and nobody says a word!!! When are the papers gonna see sense and slate her for the old tart she is!!! She is revelling in all of this attention she is getting, and its about time it stopped! OK, Spears is rumoured to have had a boob-job (and propbably has), but when do you see them hanging out of her top, like the goofy- toothed dwarfs??? Those pics from her Fever tour are ridiculous. Her boobs are pushed up sooooooo much, you can see the plastic popping out of the flesh!!! And have you noticed that there's not a smile from the pop- pixie? She is just looking down on herself, revelling in her plasticness. I dont know, I think the country has been brainwashed. It was that song 'Cant get you out of my head' that done it. It must have had some kind of subliminal message saying "MEN: You will all adore Kylie - she is the perfect image of woman; and WOMEN: You will all not care that your men fantasise about Kylie every night in her hotpants, you must love her and want to be her".

Well, I think I must have been one of the few that escaped her propaganda tactics!

Is there anybody else out there??????????????????

i bought the 'rhythm of love' cd recently, because of 'what do i have to do'... but it's only driven home how great 'better the devil you know' is. i love the synthesiser male back up singer bits:

kylie: "i'll take you back again"
male synthesiser 'oh' noise: "oh oh oh oh oh"
kylie: "i'll take you back again"
male synthesister 'oh' noise: "oo-oo-oh...oo-oo-oh"

'Made of Glass' is fantastic! Although I second the opinion that Kylie's vocals aren't that great. Does anybody know if it will still be included in the forthcoming Rachel Stevens album?

daavid (daavid), Thursday, 3 March 2005 05:52 (nineteen years ago) link

'I Believe In You' is killing me. It reminds me (lyrically) so much of some early/mid 90s minor hit with similar lyrics. So similar in fact, I could swear Kylie lifted them wholesale, especially 'I don't believe I'd love somebody / just to pass the time'. I think it was some industrialish thing with monotone vocals. I initially thought male vocals, but the more I listen to 'I Believe In You' the more my memory of the song that's torturing me warps to resemble Kylie.

minolta (minolta), Thursday, 3 March 2005 09:07 (nineteen years ago) link

'Made In Glass' is the b-side to next Kylie single (Giving You Up) so unfortunately it seems a bit improbable that Rachel's people will want/get it now.

I wonder if Tom still stands by this:

The recent return-to-pop stuff has been weak, on a level with Geri and Emma Bunton, not even as good as Louise's comeback singles.

Or has Kylie listened to Tom's criticisms and returned with Can't Get You Out Of My Head, Come Into My World, Slow, I Believe In You, Lovin' You, Made Of Glass, etc?

Well done, Tom. GYBE never listened though, did they?

As to the alter Ego and Riton remixes, well, depends what you want from a remix. If you want a bleepy, bloopy track which has little to do with the original song apart from the occasional vocal line, go for the Riton Re Rub. If, however, you want the song played over a Daft Punk Discovery-era album track with added gay-disco fills and handclaps, go for the Alter ego.

I'll take the latter. Till the Almighty.

Some friends and I watched a smuggled-out-of-the-UK video of her Showgirl show, recorded just before she stopped due to her health problems.

Good show, esp. "Can't Get You Out Of My Head", "Your Disco Needs You", er one or two others. The best bit was this Back to 1990 italo house and rave rivalism sequence! Smily faces and "Step Back In Time" and "What Do I Have To Do", but best of all, a rollicking piano vamp early house version of "Spinning Around"! Which was awesome! Now keep in mind that I usually loathe "Spinning Around" as being only one rung above the absolute nadir of bad millenial disco-pop ("Make Luv") (obv. there is loads of great millenial disco pop) and you'll get a sense of how stunning this transformation is.

Needs to be recorded and released properly!

The name of the album is a reference to a book of poetry written by Billy Childish titled Poems to Break the Hearts of Impossible Princesses. The book was given to Minogue as a gift by Nick Cave, and she has said that the poems summarized where she was at that time in her life.

the song is nice if a bit slight - "I wanna go out dancing" feels a bit obvious in concept for Kylie and it's not exceptional enough to overcome that. The video is awful though, it looks so cheap.

I was in a nightclub last week doing a Kylie-themed night and I can confirm that "Slow", "Get Out Of My Way" and "Love At First Sight" still all sound incredible in different ways on the dancefloor.

Slow sounds better to me as time goes by. I liked it at the time, but it always seemed too slight to really grip me. Now it sounds like a classic. I got the 12" last year and played it over and over. It's perfect.

The video for Dancing has really elevated the song even though it really doesn't look like there was much of a budget at all. The clapping/finger snap combo leading up to the chorus is so great. She really sells it well. Shame there's absolutely no chance of this becoming a hit.

kitchen person, Saturday, 3 February 2018 17:44 (six years ago) link

definitely not too similar to 'chained to the rhythm' for me. one thing about that song is that the lyrics sucked while these lyrics are great. i love everything about the new song. i loved 'say something' too. lol i didn't expect to like new kylie especially this year but like she is so so good at the highest form of generic disco pop it makes me want to cry.

wrt the katie perry song it represents a type of major-hit pop song that wants to look like it 'has something to say' but really just makes a virtue out of submission to the powers that be - i gag at that sort of thing. with these new kylie songs she just sounds so refreshed and focused on this goal of achieving pure dance pop transcendence it bowls me over completely. i'm buying it all lol. i didn't like 'golden' much.

I don't think it's a great album, certainly not as imaginatively produced as Roisin Murphy, Jessie Ware, and Dua Lipa's, say -- what a year! But I like half of it.

Between this album, Dua Lipa, Jessie Ware, and (Roisin)'s, it's been a banner year for post-disco awesomeness.

Also for consideration on the pile, Horse Meat Disco's debut album, including four Amy Douglas lead vocals, two Kathy Sledge leads, and one N'Dea Davenport.

Ira, Louis, and Aida discuss the conservative fervor over Harry Styles wearing a dress on the cover of Vogue, the COVID season of The Bachelorette, Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X’s new videos, Twitter’s new “Fleets” feature, the Grammys, Pitchfork’s Kylie Minogue review, Obama’s A Promised Land playlist, and more. Plus, Rachel Bloom joins to discuss depicting mental health on television and her new memoir I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are.

the people who listened may not remember the specifics but will remember that they dislike me

Without listening, there's a 70% chance that none of the three hosts even mention your name, and just say "Pitchfork's review." If they do say your name, the number of people who remember it by the next sentence will be minimal. Of that contingent, the number who care about Kylie Minogue will be a much smaller subset. Of them, the number who give a shit at all whether someone gives an alright-not-great Kylie album an "alright, not great" review might be greater than 50%. Within that remaining chunk, the number who not only receive, but also hold onto, their opinions from some pop culture podcast hosts who have in all likelihood not listened to the album and read the review in full will be the square root of bugger all.

I'm not saying anything new here, but the limit does not exist when it comes to the lows pop stans will stoop to in terms of harrassing people that say or write things they don't like about their idols. It doesn't help that occasionally these idols themselves fan the flames (I'm thinking of the Lana Del Rey / Ann Powers incident last year or when Lizzo tweeted that only musicians should be allowed to write music reviews, etc), or that for some reason Metacritic scores have come to mean almost as much as commercial chart positions to stanbases. And in some cases there's just no way of pleasing them. folklore received an 8.0 on Pitchfork and the writer still ended up getting doxxed.

I'm sorry this is happening Katherine and for what it's worth your review was fair, thorough and certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

Also, I think publications owe a duty of care to their staff in situations like this where the result of posting a review of a high-profile act is death threats towards the writer.

I think Keep It has a large audience, but other people here are right that almost no listeners will hear that and then click over to Pitchfork and find out what they're going on about.

Stan culture is absolutely repulsive to me, and it only seems to be getting worse. I don't even know if there's a way to put it back in the bottle at this point, and it infuriates me.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 November 2020 01:38 (four years ago) link

I listened to the Keep It segment and it's even worse/worthless than I expected and the bar was low

1. v telling that Ira declines to go into detail on criticizing Scooter Braun beforehand and then immediately decides to punch down at Katherine

2. didn't even address a single point in the review other than the score

It’s worth remembering that even if you do everything right, some internet rando will still senselessly hate you for it. There’s no such thing as being universally liked, and that’s ok (this is what stans refuse to accept btw). Anyway, Kylie’s music has never been my cup of tea but that was a good and informative review.

pomenitul, Thursday, 19 November 2020 13:14 (four years ago) link

have listened to the podcast (1st time ever), they mention nothing but the rating itself... I assume @katherine you are a serious pop music critic, while this podcast is some pulp, immediate blah blah blah content to listen to when jogging or cleaning, so honestly - even if one can find it amusing - this is like apples & oranges. hence do ignore this shit and keep up the good work!

and getting back to the review itself - i agree with sooo many points and arguments of katherine's review, but this won't change the fact that I'm spinning this record to death and yes, on paper it could be (and potentially is) 'worse' than roisin, jessie or dua, but its only kylie who can pull off a song with such a corny intro as supernova, making me tremble with embarrassment at the beginning, and then hijack with her delivery or chorus that im singing while writing now and leaving me breathless in the end. just like any great party that I came late to, i.e. everybody is drunk already, im thinking: what is wrong with these awful people?! and in 30 mins im sweating with the rest on the dance floor.
(plus some of these songs like 'real groove' are objectively a-mah-zing!)

krewki, Thursday, 19 November 2020 14:57 (four years ago) link

this struck me during the Folklore fiasco but pop stans getting mad at pitchfork reviews will never not be mindboggling to me. and they get mad when pitchfork doesn't review their faves' records too! there's no pleasing them.

fever is one of the greatest pop albums of all time, of course she is going to have the same cult of stans as every other pop star, even if 'cult' needs to be emphasised a little more for her than some

ufo, Friday, 20 November 2020 07:20 (four years ago) link

Fever came out 19 years ago, and the new audience it brought in was, speaking broadly, gay American males (compared to her previous moderately-gay-male-leaning UK and .au general public). It seems counterintuitive that a feverish hate-mail writing stan culture is made up of 40-something blokes.

@oneposter (💹) (sic), Friday, 20 November 2020 07:49 (four years ago) link

there are plenty of younger, mostly gay male, fans who make up those stans because she's really that much of an icon. it was only 2010 that she really last had hits in the uk and australia. madonna still has stans! it doesn't seem that weird as far as stan culture goes to me.

ufo, Friday, 20 November 2020 08:12 (four years ago) link

I also thought most of her stans would be gay which is why I was surprised to see one of the ones tweeting at katherine has also tweeted homophobic slurs and has a link to a "reparative therapy" site on their profile (possibly another Briscoe Cain type I guess)

can i introduce you to "men"

point absolutely taken on my wording. but in my head, the sort of stans who brigade with hate mail were primarily teens-to-22ish with the combo of too much energy, and insecurity. 44-year-old gay men who loved Kylie when they were 12 or 25 have had plenty of experience of her putting out 6/10 albums with a few generous 8/10 tracks in the five calendar decades that she's had UK #1s!

The only tracks that I've had any genuine affection for on each Kylie album since Aphrodite have been their respective lead singles. "Say Something" in particular I just adored; I distinctly remember being brought to tears all of a sudden when watching the Infinite Disco version, which may have in part been a side effect of lockdown-induced mania.

This one feels slightly undercooked (I would like another rehash of the chorus at the end) and all in all is giving me Rita Ora x Imanbek or a lost Inna single. But the sound seems TikTok-friendly to me, so it wouldn't surprise me if it does end up doing something in the charts in the UK at least.

monotony, Friday, 19 May 2023 01:25 (one year ago) link

feels like it could use an extended mix or another section besides the verse/chorus—2:45 is too short, and that does give it a kind of undercooked feel.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 19 May 2023 01:41 (one year ago) link

i agree it's a little undercooked. the vocal production is also just odd - beyond whatever manipulation is going on it just sits in a weird place in the mix?

ufo, Friday, 19 May 2023 01:47 (one year ago) link

yeah I think the vocal production doesn’t let her personality/warmth seep through as much as it could, it’s a bit cold and robotic/robo-tuned. but i could live with it if there was a middle 8 or if the outro was extended into a longer instrumental section.

As with Padam Padam I can't help but feel this it's quite anonymous. But I don't really mind it.

(Also, as with PP, I can hear the perfect moment for a cool fade-out but then no one does something as playlist-unfriendly as that anymore.)

i actually hear some Grimes in this a bit, there's something about the airiness of it which hits the same sweet spot for me. minus the fascism.

this isn’t as immediate as Padam Padam was, but feels like it might grow on me (whereas I tired of PP pretty quickly). either way, it’s great - her consistency is incredible

Roz, Thursday, 31 August 2023 17:23 (one year ago) link

the last one grew on me a lot, though i did like it on first pass. the extended mixes album and Infinite Disco might be the best incarnations of those tracks however. Padam Padam is another which sounds a bit better over time. this one really sounds to me like another possible hit, though who knows?

I think this one is fantastic (most of the joy of "Padam" to me was in seeing it resonate beyond Kylie's core 2023 audience), but from what I hear, most of the album won't necessarily follow the same icy electro path as these singles. Still very excited for it though.

The singles were a bit misleading for the album, but I'm really enjoying it. Vegas High, Story and especially Hold On To Now are my immediate favourites. I slightly prefer it to Disco. Feel like I'm into that album much more than most people on here though.

kitchen person, Monday, 25 September 2023 03:30 (one year ago) link

misremembered the title as Pressure since she is holding a diamond on the cover - last minute change do you think?

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 25 September 2023 04:40 (one year ago) link

the album is cute, but yes the singles are the best songs on it. I like "One More Time" which feels like a Future Nostalgia leftover and "Hold On To Now" is that big sweeping electropop that she does so well (although admittedly when I hear it I do compulsively just want to put on Robyn's "Honey" instead)

monotony, Monday, 25 September 2023 07:15 (one year ago) link

yeah agree with that, a lot of this feels like Kylie by-the-numbers to me though it's a very breezy and enjoyable listen.

Apart from the singles, my favourite track is "Hands" - the rapped verses are just on the right side of silly, and the chorus is lovely

Roz, Monday, 25 September 2023 08:42 (one year ago) link

nashwan, Monday, 25 September 2023 09:00 (one year ago) link

title track is one of my fave Kylie tracks ever at this point, just sublime stuff imo. the rest of the album is less unpredictable, but still stellar. i imagine this is going to be her biggest US album since Fever, riding the Padam Padam wave, and bolstered by the Vegas residency.

omar little, Friday, 19 July 2024 16:32 (five months ago) link

yeah she's in a golden era!

i'm a little bummed that like .. i couldn't really sell a 'kylie night' at the club i dj at, whereas a 'taylor swift night' is almost de rigueur. but idk, it wouldn't hurt to try, right? god i'd have a blast djing a kylie night sheesh.

bebe rexha had that infernally catchy track last summer that went 'i'm good and i'm feeling all right, gonna have the best fuckin night of my life' - this reminds me a little bit of that with its aggressive earworm chorus.

I mean jesus with the right crowd it would be probably the most excellent set one could ever hope to hear. She's got so many ill deep cuts too, feel like any Kylie set should include Fragile, her Moroder collaboration, and most recently Somebody to Love. You don't need my pro tips though I'm sure!

mark e, Thursday, 22 August 2024 18:32 (three months ago) link

i'm not really sure but this sounds like either an orgy or a k hole on the dance floor, maybe it's both?

"I didn't come to hold up the walls
I’m going deeper, deeper
Six deep in the bathroom stalls
A different creature, yeah
Why walk when you can crawl?"

the lyrics in this are so evocative, just the right amount of darkness and dedication to partying, i feel blessed that she had this rolling around in her at 56 lol. and blessed madonna's production is sublime of course. they're perfect together. an album if it happened could be incredible. as it is i'm just glad we got this one. agree that "my oh my" was weak sauce.

he/him hoo-hah (map), Thursday, 22 August 2024 19:31 (three months ago) link

def one of Kylie's better collabs. absolutely wild that she's 56 btw it's a very difficult proposition to pull off being a pop star of a *certain age* and not look ridiculous but she manages it better than almost anyone else.

I'm not one of those people who obsessively plays new tracks over and over again within a short space of time, but DAMN I am OBSESSED with this. Really into it also. It’s a Raye joint, which you can really hear in the middle eight. I think there’s a version with her vocals on it that the Blessed Madonna was playing live. Not sure how Kylie ended up on it exactly but it’s fun to hear her doing something like this.

monotony, Friday, 23 August 2024 09:30 (three months ago) link

That one-note chuggy section immediately reminded me of Boris Brejcha: Up Down Jumper, which I always play with the acappella from Texas Hold 'Em on top (get the two together in the right place, and it just sounds wonderful).

Lo and behold, it's the same note, same key, same rhythm, just 5bpm apart. So it's a Beyonce > Kylie mix for me tonight.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 18 October 2024 19:06 (two months ago) link

this album is *almost* all bangers, the Sia track is kinda generic and the Orville Peck collab is more just fun than it is really good. everything else is the good shit.

omar little, Friday, 18 October 2024 19:16 (two months ago) link

the sia track does sound written in 5 minutes but it fits the vibe and I think it works better as a Kylie featuring sia song than the other way around. has grown on me.

I kind of want to hear the Orville song with just Kylie doing all the parts

Michael F Gill, Friday, 18 October 2024 20:01 (two months ago) link

i don't think the Sia track is bad or anything, in fact it's better than i thought it would be considering the takes i read here and there.

i actually really like Hello a lot -- once it kicks in properly around the 30 second mark it starts killing it.

omar little, Friday, 18 October 2024 20:16 (two months ago) link

this is a really cohesive album, up thru EOSN. It does sound like a very skilled attempt at capturing the "Padam Padam" lightning in a bottle with almost every track being under 3 min and several of them having a *really* similar style, and it feels more like a bonus album than a real major statement, but in that capacity it's really impressive. There are plenty of people out there who seem to prefer this to Tension itself, and while I'm definitely not one of them, I can understand the perspective.

omar little, Tuesday, 22 October 2024 18:58 (one month ago) link

It’s definitely has a “mini-album” or “bonus album” vibes, and I can see how the previously released collab tracks at the end feels like further “bonus tracks”. But you are right the fact that it doesn’t take itself too seriously or try to do much is one of its strengths.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 22 October 2024 21:05 (one month ago) link

I'm underwhelmed by this, but I never got much enjoyment from Padam Padam so no surprise that what is essentially a Padam Padam-knockoff extended EP/mini LP is not rising to the top.

skip, Friday, 25 October 2024 20:30 (one month ago) link

just heard the extended version of tension ii (was only available for a few days on her website, you can find it on YouTube at least for now) and a lot of the songs breathe better at 3-4 minutes with longer intros and breakdowns. Not sure they all need the extended touch, but it does make them slightly trackier/closer to classic extended disco tracks. There are random times where the instrumental breakdown happens in the middle of the second verse / before the second chorus, but otherwise worth checking out.
