ATP NEW YORK 2009 ANNOUNCES FIRST 7 ACTS, FESTIVAL DATES CHANGE TO SEPT. 11-13, 2009

All Tomorrow’s Parties (ATP) is happy to announce its return to Kutsher’s Country Club in Monticello, New York for the 2nd annual ATP New York festival. The event will be held Sept 11-13, 2009 (moved from labor day weekend as previously announced). Last year’s festival, co-curated by My Bloody Valentine, was a critical and cultural success with rave reviews from media and fans.

Expect more of the same greatness in 2009, with no-holds-barred programming both musically and otherwise. While we have yet to announce the co-curator of the event at this time, we are happy to announce the first seven artists slated for the festival.

Friday: Don’t Look Back/Comedy

Dirty Three Performing Ocean Songs
Suicide Performing First LP

David Cross – Hosting Comedy Stage

Saturday: curated by ATP

Animal Collective
Anti-Pop Consortium
Atlas Sound
Panda Bear

Sunday: Curator TBA in the coming weeks

Suicide Performing First LP

Hmm.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 14:57 (fifteen years ago) link

I lucked out by having the big bands I don't much care for (Built To Spill and Thurston Moore) running at the same time as the comedy stage, so I could check out Patton and Eugene and whatnot and not worry about missing bands. I bet trying to catch LOLs and Suicide is gonna be tres difficile

wow, looks pretty sweet so far

yeah. apparently the day three curator is TOTALLY AMAZING, but i don't know who it is. i'd sorta wondered if animal collective might do it.

last year was great, anyway. kutshers accommodation would almost make it worth spending hundreds of dollars years in advance, too.

I'll do this

OTM. Having a room to go back to in the middle of the day (to go to the bathroom, get a snack, change a shirt or just lay down) in the middle of the day was EPIC.

The rumor going around Kutshers was Neutral Milk Hotel, but I don't know if I could handle a day of Japancakes reunions.

yeah. i was at the raleigh, which was a pain-in-the-ass queue-for-hours busride away, and it was cool, in a cheap canteen spaghetti kinda way, but kutshers had everything.

the line up's like three groups in, and d3 playing ocean songs is part of standard atp entry price (in fact, isn't it horse stories they usually do?). i'm sure the line-up'll be pretty great.

update! FINALLY!

Today we're pleased to announce the second group of announcements for our second ATP New York festival which runs from 11th-13th September 2009 and is co-curated by The Flaming Lips. The first event received widespread rave reviews and the second is shaping up to be just as good.

On Friday 11th September, joining the previously announced Dirty Three performing Ocean Songs, Suicide performing their legendary first LP and David Cross curating a comedy stage, we have:

THE JESUS LIZARD - their first New York show in many many years
THE DRONES - performing Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of The Enemies Will Float By

On Saturday 12th September, joining the previously announced Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Black Dice, Antipop Consortium, Autolux and Atlas Sound we have:

MELVINS
EL-P
DEAD MEADOW
AKRON FAMILY
SLEEPY SUN

We will be announcing some of the bands that THE FLAMING LIPS, our Sunday headliners, have announced in the near future.

Tickets are on sale now for $235 with or without accommodation at an extra cost.

We are also placing on sale today a VERY limited amount of day passes for this festival. Friday day passes cost $75, Saturday and Sunday passes cost $95 per day. These are on sale now and due to high demand are not expected to be available for very long.

Melvins and Jesus Lizard aside, last year's lineup KILLS this year's pathetic excuse for a lineup so far.

Reatards Unite, Friday, 1 May 2009 20:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Last year had better headliners. I feel like Animal Collective and Deerhunter are not quite sufficient for a Saturday headlining duo; hoping there's more to come in that regard.

I still think ATP NY 09 needs a third heavy hitter for Don't Look Back on Friday. I'm looking forward to Suicide and the Feelies, but Dirty Three and the Drones (much as I enjoy both at times) seem a bit weak to me.

This lineup, on the other hand, just seems incredible:

Devo
The Jesus Lizard
Spiritualized
Sleep - Performing Holy Mountain / selections from Dopesmoker and more.
Grails
Young Marble Giants - Performing Colossal Youth

I think ATP NY has a bit of catching up to do...

Sufjan Stevens, Shellac, Circulatory System, Grouper picked by us.
Crystal Castles, Super Furry Animals, Boris, The Low Lows, Oneida presents The Ocropolis picked by The Flaming Lips.

The Oneida thing sounds like it'll be amazing. info they gave us: "Oneida will transport the impetus, spirit and community of their multidisciplinary studio/performance space, The Ocropolis, to ATP for a full day of improvisation, collaboration, and recording, combined with the astounding Mighty Robot Visuals light crew. BORIS TO PERFORM FEEDBACKER AT ATP NEW YORK

On Friday 11th, David Cross has picked Eugene Mirman, Jon Benjamin & Jon Glaser - 'The Fuggedabuddies' and Derrick Brown and the Navy Gravy for the comedy stage.

On Sunday 13th, The Flaming Lips have picked Black Moth Super Rainbow, Birds Of Avalon, Menomena and Hopewell. We are also incredibly excited to confirm that for their set performing the songs of Husker Du, No Age will be joined by none other than Bob Mould.

We are also happy to announce that Ian Svenonius will bring his Soft Focus show to Kutshers for live interview sessions with Suicide, Melvins and more TBC!

Just one word: ONEIDA.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 14 September 2009 07:15 (fourteen years ago) link

Best of the best:

Oneida - "presents the Ocropolis," aka 10+ hours of krautrock inspired free improv., a total mindfuck
Boris - performing Feedbacker
Boredoms - 9 drummer Boadrum

Really damn good:

Caribou Vibration Ensemble + Marshall Allen
No Age + Bob Mould - performing Husker Du songs (oh yes)

Enjoyable enough:

The Flaming Lips (great showmanship, lacking in actual tunes)
Super Furry Animals
Deerhoof + Martha Colburn

Weekend top ten, loosely ordered:

Oneida - "presents the Ocropolis"
El-P
Suicide - performing first LP
Boris - performing Feedbacker
Boredoms - 9 drummer Boadrum
Shellac
Grouper
Caribou Vibration Ensemble + Marshall Allen
Melvins
Dirty Three + special guest Nick Cave

What exactly did Oneida do? Did they do a bunch of sets or was it one long set?

Nate Carson, Monday, 14 September 2009 07:51 (fourteen years ago) link

It was one long set, they had their own stage and played for about 10-11 hours. All but the last hour or so was improvised, and they had guests at different points come in and sit and play with them for 10-20 minutes apiece. I saw them play with members of the Flaming Lips and Boredoms, a jam with drummer extraordinaire Zach Hill, and a couple other people I didn't recognize. The last hour was billed as "Oneida Plays Oneida," and they did a bunch of (mostly shorter) songs from albums past and present.

Having their own stage was a really great concept. I was never bored during the day, in between sets of other bands I'd just go see Oneida for a few minutes or half hour or whatever. I dropped in maybe a half dozen times over the course of the day.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 14 September 2009 08:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Thanks for the quick answer!

I love Oneida. But I love them even more live. Or just hanging around with them. Super nice guys and total bad-asses on stage.

I first crossed paths with them on tour a few nights in '99. Then really re-discovered them when Anthems on the Moon came out.

Nate Carson, Monday, 14 September 2009 08:35 (fourteen years ago) link

Was only there for a few hours, seeing Boredoms and Caribou. Thought both were fantastic - best shows I'd seen be either of them. Boredoms overrunning and having their equipment broken down while they played was kinda funny.

fucking amazing weekend. maybe the best atp i've been to, and i only got to see little bits of a bunch of bands. good bits:

* ten or eleven hours of oneida jamming/recording/rehearsing with collaborators including aaron from tall firs, members of flaming lips, boredoms, no neck blues band, zach hill and tons more
* no age / bob mould was amazing though i only got to see three songs :-(, but one was with brandon cox helping them do a cover of chinese rocks so that was pretty sweet
* the low lows playing an extra gig next to the lake, and then their trombonist accompanying the kutshers regular entertainer guy on covers of showtunes and time of my life from dirty dancing
* insane party on saturday night with some couple having sex in the walkin closet with 100+ people just outside
* boris feedbacker absolutely incredible
* 9 drummer boadrum fucking insane, included some crazy 8 necked electric guitar that kept being smashed every now and then. drummers included kid millions from oneida and zach hill
* sufjan seven swans set was beautiful
* last night in one of the hotel lobbies which has a grand piano there was a massive jam session featuring punters and band members including brandon cox playing some microcastles stuff on piano, circulatory system people playing, and most weirdly ryan schrieber from pitchfork playing tiny dancer by elton john
* ian svenonius dance party on saturday night = ridiculously fantastic
* generally lovely crowd
* nick cave played piano with dirty three
* another great jesus lizard show, and the main stage has no barrier thus tons of good crowd interaction
* dj last night playing 4/5 smiths/morrissey songs in a row

exhausted now.

I attended ATP all weekend and it was a blast. There were definitely more sets that I loved this year than last year.

I agree that the Boredoms were absolutely amazing and my favorite of the weekend. Other sets that I absolutely loved in no real order:

Caribou Vibration Ensemble
Animal Collective
Boris
Sufjan Stevens
Oneida 'Ocropolis' (saw the first couple of hours with the Lips and Akron/Family which was good and caught some of the Boredoms collaboration)
Deerhunter
The Lips
Deerhoof
Dirty Three
Akron/Family
Panda Bear
El-P

Also, liked Black Dice more live than on record but could only take about fifteen minutes of it because it rattled my brain. Enjoyed what I saw of Boss Hog. Caught some of No Age/Bob Mould (which was cool and saw Mould DJing after hours. So much fun stuff and a great vibe.

Such a great time! Thanks ATP and I hope you do this next year.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 22:12 (fourteen years ago) link

To expand on an above question -- yes, the Oneida set was recorded in full and will possibly see release in some form.

From the ATP website:

The performances will be recorded on the fly with a multi-track mobile recording unit by Gang Gang Dance producer and engineer Sean Maffucci. Oneida will then mix, edit and compile the best moments of the day for release as soon as possible. The resultant album will then be made available as an adjunct part of the Thank Your Parents series of releases on a limited basis.

I didn't see it but apparently the NNCK guys showed up to jam. I was told one got naked and the other started throwing a cymbal around until someone kicked him in the stomach.

I was there, and unfortunately, this is not entirely accurate. He played drums for about 15-20 minutes, then started reassembling the drum kit into a tower (bass on bottom, snare on top), then took off his shoes/clothes one by one and hung them over the tower, then pulled draperies from the wall to add to the tower, then he poured a cup of beer over the whole thing. Then, completely naked, he picked up the huge tower of stuff and carried it around the stage for about 10 minutes. Then he set it down (with help from the Oneida guys) and put everything back, and put his clothes back on. This was all done in a very zoned-out, ritualistic way, I might add -- very slowly and "artistically," if you could call it that -- and served as interesting visual accompaniment to the entirety of Zach Hill's jam session.

I have pictures, btw, and could post tomorrow if anyone's interested.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 03:54 (fourteen years ago) link

While he was carrying the drum tower around the stage/floor, one of the guys in the audience went up randomly and grabbed a pair of drumsticks and started banging on the drums he was carrying, and then on the guy's ass. No, I do not have pictures of that part.

Hmm not sure how long ago it was confirmed to be honest, I only found out who it was a week or so ago. Barry keeps things close for as long as possible as the world is far too gossipy nowadays and if something leaks there's no way to get it back.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 11 February 2010 15:44 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm aware it's like a .0005% chance, but me and my friends are all quietly praying it's gonna be Faith No More. Seeing them in a room that size would pretty much be a dream of a lifetime. Plus Patton did an amazing job curating his ATP. I'd be like an excited 11th grader about a band for the first time in forever. All my cranky pretense would disappear.

tza tziki sauce (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 11 February 2010 16:00 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd be happy if it was Faith No More because then I wouldn't be sad about not getting to attend, like I have the past two years. I could make peace with not going, because I've seen the Patton lineups before and I'm not wholly impressed with his choices.

Melvins + Mastodon on stage playing The Bit with three drummers + 3 guitarists made my mind melt that weekend. The only downer of that event was what horrible people butthole surfers were, but then i think we should have expected that a bit more than we did. Annoyingly some people who might have reputations as being assholes turn out to be lovely (Mike Patton, Buzz) and others turn out to be assholes.

MUDHONEY performing Superfuzz Bigmuff + Early Singles
THE SCIENTISTS performing Blood Red River (first ever U.S. Show)
+ more to be confirmed!

Friday will also feature a Comedy Stage, details of which are to be announced soon.

NEWLY CONFIRMED - ATP celebrate 10 years with a birthday party on Sat 4th September and are happy to announce a day of past ATP curators, ATP Recordings artists and friends, with the first announcements being:

SONIC YOUTH

Not too bad, but I'm okay with missing this more so than the last two years. Raekwon should be fun, but that aside, I've seen pretty much everyone on Sat/Sun that I'm interested in on that lineup (Sonic Youth, Explosions, Breeders, Fuck Buttons, Wooden Shjips, Black Angels). The Brian Jonestown Massacre on Sunday looks hugely disappointing as a headliner, I hope there ends up being something more worthwhile in the top Sunday slots for those attending. Still bummed about missing Iggy and Sleep, but those aside, I'll stay at home in Texas this year, not by choice, but at least there's nothing that I would just *die* to miss... yet, that is.

I mean, how long until Tortoise, Shellac, Dirty Three, Melvins, Deerhoof, etc. join the Saturday lineup? Don't get me wrong, I love most of those guys, but they've been ATP's bread and butter for years now and are sort of a disappointment when it's just a day full of familiar faces.

I think lineups made up of some of the heaviest hitters of your past events are predictable in the best way humanly possible though. Those are solid but unsurprising additions. I still hope Jarmusch reaches out a little more to other people he's worked with, as well As Sunn, Boris, etc (who you'd kind of expect to see at an ATP event anyway). Surely John Lurie will be involved somewhere? And, as hinted at up there ^, Tom Waits would just be unreal. Kutshers really is the perfect venue for him as well.

Position Position, Thursday, 25 March 2010 19:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Saw Waits live in Dallas roughly a year ago and dude was fucking unreal. Better than most anything I've seen at ATP NY the past two years (and I've enjoyed the great majority of those lineups)...

Jamie_ATP, Thursday, 25 March 2010 20:15 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess the problem with having someone like Waits involved is it would sell out in about two seconds flat and many of his fans might not necessarily stick around for the other bands.

ATP celebrate 10 years with a birthday party on Saturday 4th September hosting a day of past ATP curators, ATP Recordings artists and friends. To complete the line-up for this day our new additions are headed up by HALLOGALLO, a very special new project headed by Michael Rother and featuring Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth), Aaron Mullan (Tall Firs) and Ben Curtis (Secret Machines, School of Seven Bells). Hallogallo will perform the music of Rother's 1970s Krautrock legends Neu! - their recent debut show in Barcelona was rapturously received. Also confirmed are cult heros SHELLAC who appear as ATP's House Band, FURSAXA, SIAN ALICE GROUP and TEXT OF LIGHT (featuring Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo). Steve Albini of Shellac is also confirmed to host his Card Games Room over the weekend. Here's that day's full line-up...

Sleep were immense, they played for over two hours. You're in for a treat in Austin, ilxor. Other highlights: Sonic Youth playing a set of only '80s material on Saturday night, T Model Ford doing at least two impromptu sets and being everywhere all the time (not bad going for a 90-something dude in a wheelchair), Beak> being a perfect early Saturday wake up call, Hope Sandoval telling us we all looked "quite tired" (are her and Colm from MBV an item? I'm assuming they are?), Wooden Shjips obliterating any need for a Spacemen 3 reunion, Papa M being one of the few acts to grasp that we don't need to be bludgeoned to death by volume all the time (and proving that Pajo is really wasting his talent on turds like Zwan and Interpol). I guess the Sunn/Boris thing was good but it's not really my thing. I snuck off to see GZA instead, who put a lot more effort into his set than Raekwon's very brief will-this-do main stage appearance. Oh, and Ron Jeremy was there.

There's loads of stuff I'm forgetting but I just got back to NYC and need sleep after dancing the night away to DJ Kool Herc's set.

fine,

Highlights

1. Iggy & The Stooges - Straight up bonkers crowd, Mike Watt totally digging in, Scott Asheton swinging his grooves, and 60-something Iggy just climbing all over the crowd. Total fuckin madhouse. I was in the second row for about 45 minutes and was just soaked and ruined and dehydrated, my shirt completely unbuttoned. Wow.

2. Text Of Light - These guys just obliterated me. Strictly face-melting noise. Was such a good break-up to the more indie/psych stuff. People packed the room ("Hey! Lee Renaldo!") and then there was like 30 of us at the end. But it was so textured and intricate, i just got lost in their goo.

3. Fucked Up - I've seen these dudes before, but it was such a caffeinated jolt. Young kids spazzing out, PinkEye just commands a room.

4. The Breeders - A little nostalgic, totally fun

5. The Food! - Man between the outdoor BBQ ribs melting off the bone, the lateral-minded flavors of Steve's Ice Cream (Protip: lemon meringue with marshmallow), and of course the porkbelly Asiadogs, I was just in heaven all weekend. It's hard to believe just three years ago it was just fried bullshit and now it's like something worth making the trip for alone.

Other highlights: Ricky Powell's slideshow was a riot, T-Model Ford in the lobby was unreal, getting to see Five Easy Pieces and Underworld in the Criterion Cinema was great. Fuck Buttons had ridiculous bass, the book panel was chill

Other stuff I saw!: Beak>, Sleep, The Scientists, Mudhoney, Sian Alice Group, Hallogallo 2010, Shellac, the Breeders, Explosions In The Sky, Sonic Youth, Fursaxa, The Books, Thurston, the Greenhornes, Hope Sandoval, Girls, Raekwon, SunnO))) and Boris, White Hills, Wooden Shjips, Dungen...

and then a few hours with the mighty KOOL HERC

Sounds like I need to check out Text of Light, that's one of the only names on the bill I'm not familiar with. Very jealous of the Stooges set, that sounds IMMENSE. Would welcome details on Neu!/Hallogallo, Sonic Youth (all '80s setlist??), Sunn/Boris, Sleep... although I'm sure everything was great.

I'm seeing Sleep in three days in Austin (my small consolation for not being able to hit ATP this year).

• Ricky Powell showed up 30 minutes late and then pretty much went for three hours. Also, he bum-rushed the stage during Raekwon's set and Masta Killa pushed him off.

• Fucked Up poured a giant bag of cereal on everyone and made the ballroom smell like chocolate

• SunnO))) and Boris was really beautiful, not as loud as i hoped, but fantastic.

• Kool Herc did this amaaaaaaaazing set of like rocksteady, into funk, into 80s/90s wedding-ready rap, into reggae and totally had the room packed. Then he closed with B.o.B, some song that sounded like "Blame It" but wasn't and Eminem's "White Trash Party" and totally cleared the room. Probably the only club on earth where that would happen!

I had organized a big pool party in the middle of Sonic Youth's set and everyone was psyched to go, then they played an all-80s setlist and people were so transfixed that i was the only one in the pool

Hallogallo was actually a little dull and marred by bad, bassy sound. Sucks cuz it was one of the things I was looking fwd too. But they played some of my fave Harmonia jams, which was great

This is how I feel every time I've seen Boris since the first, in 2007. They were louder from *outside* the venue, waiting in line, back in 2007, than they are nowadays. But that's a small complaint and I'm sure my ears are thankful, even if my heart is not.

Hold up a sec, I mean, swimming is fucking awesome, but you skipped an all-'80s SY set for a dip in the pool???

i don't really like Sonic Youth all that much iirc. I saw about a 1/2 hour of their set and certainly enjoyed it.

Were Sleep as brain-rattlingly loud/heavy as advertised?

they went pretty big. neurosis drummer has kind of a light touch, but it was otherwise explosive

i mean, it was a delirious weekend. the whole ILX crew of "lolconcerts? I would rather be CUDDLING with my WIFE and a BOOK" is just missing the fuck out for real

Brooklyn Vegan sez:

The 10+ minutes of Text of Light was a bust - squalls of guitar feedback with wailing sax made for a fascinating few minutes, but grew tiresome quickly.

I think I'm right in saying that the most recent Sonic Youth album they plundered was Daydream Nation. Everything else was from before that. They sounded fantastic. An Evol or Sister tour would be great. Unlikely though. Disagree with Whiney on Fucked Up, I thought they were like a Wal Mart vision of pre-packaged punk rock rebellion, just completely lame and pointless. Sunn O))) and Boris seemed pretty loud from where I was standing, I shudder to think how loud they could have been at that 2007 show mentioned up there.

The Jim Jarmusch/Thurston Moore Q&A was a highlight. The story of how they met at a copy shop in the LES was fun - it was a place where everyone used to go to copy flyers and make fanzines in the pre Kinkos era. Moore worked there for a while until he got fired for making copies of his own 'zine on the sly.

I went to the Sunn/Boris show in Brooklyn last night. Was absolutely fantastic despite 2/3 of the power blowing out. It killed the mood a little bit but after trying to fix the situation they came back and did a kick ass show without any fancy lighting. It was great. It was totally loud enough from where I was. Loved it. I'd see them anytime either band comes back to the city. Sunn is the shit.

your ears probably just adjusted. it's like mbv's "holocaust" section that at first deafens, but eventually one's brain starts to tune it out.

Greatest hits set, sure, but sounds like they're fucking killing it to my ears.
