I love "Artificial Intelligence." Was surprised to find out she had only just signed to IDIB after putting out a few singles elsewhere; that name is just so on-the-nose.

just listened to it for the first time. it's pretty great. i wish it wasn't AS lo-fi. i dig the concept of it, but i think it could use to get rid of some tape his and eq it better. it reminds me of a lost minimal synth record.

i've only got the 12", it's aight. is it the girl from chromatics on vocals as well? if anything it proved that jj knows how to write a really infectious bassline

it makes me think more of early 80s electro rnb than it does minimal synth

i like this a lot more than fan death, the stylized lo-fi production def does it for me. it seems like she's aiming for something more like bedroom pop than anyone else on idib, almost like that tickley feather record from last year but slightly danceable

It's only available on vinyl, right? I love all the IDIB stuff (a lot) but this one hasn't appeared for sale on iTunes or eMusic or anything. I have heard one song on a sampler and it was really, really great. Can't get enough haunting icy horror movie soundtrack-y stuff.

i think i like "universal mind" much better than everything else on here, and sonically it's quite an outlier. the rest is there but doesnt do much for me

aha... looks like it's the reverse: Human Ear has the CD, but it's still listed as a "pre-order" (even though the release date is listed as December 25th, 2008). It's $12. The vinyl on Gloriette is sold out. Another Google link showed there was some other CD-R thing (different from the album) sold exclusively through the Other Music site last year, but that's all gone.

Is it not really worth it, money-wise, for small labels like IDIB/Gloriette/Human Ear to sell stuff digitally? Or why else wouldn't they?

Mike was putting the IDIB stuff on iTunes for a while, but the newest ones (Bottin, Nite Jewel, Twisted Wires) haven't shown up on there.

I assumed Nite-Funk as a one-off as well, but this news of a whole album is the kind of shit that gets me excited.

There is going to be a Nite Jewel thread on the roof of a building in my town in a couple of weeks and I'm pretty stoked.
I just hope it gets some promotional help, or that the right few people tell their friends about it. It's the kind of event that could easily fly under the radar.

Weak For Me is perfect. The rest of the songs tend to get a little too moody and lost.

The newer stuff is much more consistent imo.

i hadn't been paying attention and missed this whole EP, but it's gorgeous.

i think i'm just waiting til the next LP to see if she's kinda jumped the shark in terms of ditching her woozy futuristic bedroom-synths thing, in favour of overtly celebratory eighties music. i like it all just as much, but it seems like a weird, deliberate step, that doesn't usually bode well for musicians.

thats good to hear, i've been wanting some new nite jewel in my life for a while.

the ep & 12" were both v compelling in different ways, i thought. 'natural causes' or its remix popped up on shuffle a few days ago and really struck me. so nice texturally. i'm kinda curious to hear what the new one's like - i think because i assume it'll be hi-fi & lively, & so not bear the lo-fi, slo-mo & slinky characteristics that made me love the first one - but sorta feel like i'll just love it regardless. NJ are kinda special to me because i didn't listen to a lot of this kind of synth music beforehand, or only to some of the particular reference points it seems to swirl up, & so they maybe get extra credit for like concocting stuff they didn't actually invent. but yeah it thrills me that some is en route!

yeah, agree. i think, i guess because after the first record there was her new stuff, & also finding out about her touchstones & hearing her spin & stuff, there is that danger that she would make the leap into just adoringly, meticulously recreating music she loved. but i think that this is all kinda sharp & quick & sincere enough to skirt that - elements like the bass-playing are definitely learnt from previous music but she is making great, new, collaborative music. i still play good evening all the time anyway, & things like 'natural causes' are back to that mindset.

yeah. i'm still playing in the dark, all day long. i have a bunch to write about the record but might wait until more people have heard about it. because there are parts - the first song! - & there is the cover, which make those moves towards affiliation and kinda more overt affectation, i think, w/a lot of '80s music, all of which i think came up upthread when she was releasing it goes thru your head, &c, in hi-fi. i'd imagine the angle from which it does this is probably some of the subject of the big sprawling ilm destroyer thread, playing with a genre, playing with a form. even the sleeve, to me in some ways it's kinda a retro image to make, and in other ways i think it's just trying to be strong like those records, like a patrice rushen lp that puts the singer up front as a face on the lp, & making a record that will look the same way ten years from now. but it's interesting in a lot of ways. there are a couple of songs where the live drums make me really miss the nj slink, & some where the synth sounds don't coast or glaze or ride like good evening did in its way - just has become a preexisting form it loved & descended from instead of the weird, evolved byproduct that thing had produced. but it hits some really great highs too, & like memory man, say, becomes something that sucks me in more the more of a hold i get on it, which i think will happen with all of it. the words etc. i can't work out if she mentions heating up something in the microwave at some song towards the end of the record. she's so my fav, just so pleased to be around for these records.

sister is still one of my fav things she's done, it's perfect. there is another jam on the lp that is in the same territory but doesn't quite synthesise as well.

Well it was produced by Cole MGN of The Samps and Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti but i see no reason to think it wasn't an entirely collaborative effort. That's why i don't understand merked's comment, the pop smoothness of the thing is what makes it work. Couldn't get into Good Evening at all

that's what i liked about Nite Jewel in the first place, the bedroom sonics.. the songs on the new one are sculpted with a lot more purpose and confidence, and so are the vocal performances (this new assurance is probably what's allowed her to step out from behind the haze) - but i still liked that old sounde

She played Kraftwerk's Computer Love last night in LA...wish I was there.

I was there - it was pretty great. I'm not a big Nite Jewel fan but they did a good job of it after a slightly shaky start.

Also it was the headlining portion of a "Krautrock Classics" night. First half of the night was a bunch of bands doing one-off covers. DNTEL did Faust's "Jennifer," Ariel Pink and White Magic teamed up for a song (I didn't recognize who the originator was), ESP did Can, Sun Araw did Krokodil, and another group did a Popol Vuh song. Whole night was pretty awesome.

I keep coming back to this album, "Autograph" and "In The Dark" are amazing songs but the whole thing is so smooth and languid, yet with all these idiosyncratic sonic touches that keep it interesting, and her vocals on this are stunning in places.

Why does she have to call herself Nite Jewel though, Ramona Gonzalez is such a brilliant name.

saw her/them last night, was v good although the audience was tiny. i thought she was popular/hip/whatever! my favourite bit was the vocoder-free version 'all out of order,' it sounded incredible.

so true!, i saw them in a kinda full-enough room but i thought they would be a cool thing & it'd be rammed. it was nice though, eventually everyone was dancing & all; from the start it felt like it would've been a better show to be dancing to than staring at foot-tapping. i had thought all out of order was natural causes, not really recognising it. i really liked let's go (the two of us together), for being the first really explosive weird disco thing, & it goes through your head, which was so exciting.

yes it would have been good for dancing but i feel a bit self-conscious doing that in a mostly empty room, so i settled for head nodding instead. 'it goes through your head' was another highlight for sure :)

Finally got around to hearing the newer stuff. I'd almost forgotten about her, even though I'd expected her to become somewhat popular. 'In the Dark' is great, her voice is really strong. Reminds me of Tracey Thorn, perhaps, maybe because of that wistful quality? It'll be that kind of song you love that ends up on an anodyne chill-out compilation. I was a fan of Good Evening and played it a lot for about a year but its appeal wore off a little. I think the production worked for most songs, especially in that it had a specific kind of tone and texture that appealed to my sensibilities, but I'm glad she's gone for a more polished, less dank kind of sound on the latest album. I've seen some of her influences, and she strikes me as someone who's been angling to make this kind of music for a while. It seems quite comfortable for her, which is not to say the music's perfunctory, but I could see her wanting to move on from the gauzy lo-fi thing, which probably wouldn't have gone anywhere esp. interesting after an album that suffered from sameness and lethargy at times.

It sounds a lot more full-bodied than anything before, thd production is very thick and humid. Not a great deal of hooks and her voice feels somewhat obscured but I still enjoyed it.

hmm, new one not hitting the sweet spot very often. feels a little underworked at times; the songs sometimes seem to go on forever with minimal variation. feels like a holding motion, honestly.

Nothing But Scenery is awesome and deep

yeah so heavy & unusual; bc it starts so unadorned it was v surprising to play the record & hear it, but it has shades of the weird repurposing mission nj records have generally, i think. i remember reading some interview w her forever ago where she talks abt synthetic sounds from the eighties having a second act, like there having been a literally creative phase in which instruments were invented but their use being sort of truncated by the limits of the era in which they were populated, & it's so hazy & kind of eerie to hear her duet in sync w/ chiming synth noise

agree, it's a very strange *sounding* album but can't put my finger on exactly how

i don't like the vocals

Too much echo and reverb. There seems to be some good singing underneath all of tgat, but it's hard to tell.

Nite Funk is out today. Dam's jams are nice and Ramona plays a subdued role vocally for the most part.

i am just being difficult but i am enjoying this record so much !, + then halfway thru listening i remember the internet's ambivalence + kick a hole in the speaker, snap the arm from the turntable, take a bite out of the record + beat my chest wailing like harvey keitel. i saw her play w julia holter a few nights ago. it is such a good record, i think, + super interesting to hear her talk abt it existing as a kind fundamental full-circle nj record, like sharing so much dna w the first lp. the slow jams really grow on me too.

i bought the lp + read the v spare words for the first song i'd been getting hung up on, i still can't tell why it's spookin me so, living in this quiet zone. so gd !

Nite Jewel's last full length was pretty decent (particularly like "Running Out of Time"). Opening with "Nothing But Scenery" was an odd choice though as it feels like the album loses momentum instantly.

Do all the LA artists go to the same beach up the coast to shoot their videos? I feel like I just saw one like this starring weyes blood.

^ Nice track. "Obsession" EP has grown on me; it's uniformly chill which initially turned me off, but I found it compelling in the rain today. Sublime and insular, with the highlights "Real High" and "Real Low", gorgeous tracks with alien, aquatic synth bursts.

Haven't heard the EP but will ASAP

Moodles, you mean Nite-Funk? Yeah that's a good one and indicative of where she ended up on this new one. Turns out I'm seeing her tonight after all, so stoked - one of my favourite artists

I should give that one another shot too, but I was thinking of Liquid Cool, which I forgot was a full album.

Saw her last night and she was great. Duo with a keyboardist which allows Ramona more of an open air to sing and not play keys primarily. She's a wicked musician and a great singer, particular highlights were a blistering version of "Running Out of Time" and "What Did He Say?"

Also "Obsession" EP has become the dark counterpoint to "Real High". It contains many of the same tracks but is much more sullen and comedown than the LP. "Real Low" revisits the title track from her last LP in instrumental form and is lovely.

Yeah, I would definitely take away the "think" part of my original post. This is her best work and one of the year's nicest surprises.

yeah i love her first but this is the record she was born to make. course correct of One Second of Love. felt a bit weird hearing a track in starbucks

this album is definitely not front-loaded. it seems to peak in tempo in the middle and carry that for 3 tracks, culminating in a suite of some of her finest chill songs to date. The only weak spot is "I Don't Know"

I like that song. Pretty much like the whole album, in fact.

I went to see her last week because it was only £7 and I thought that seemed like a decent deal. I had forgotten just how many truly great songs she's made over the years and it was brilliant, her live voice was flawless.

ultra lush, from the "Obsession" EP - which is a perfect transitional record from "Liquid Cool" to "Real High". EP starts with the title track from the newest and is book-ended by "Real Low", an instrumental version with more pronounced surface noise and an extended outro. Whole EP feels like a come-down and falls more in line with the nite-funk feel. PM me if you're interested

In 2018, Gonzalez’s twelve year marriage dissolved. This left her alone and displaced, drifting from friend’s couch to friend’s couch. At the same time, she began her PhD in Musicology at UCLA. Gonzalez’s research on women’s musical lament practices formed a historical backbone for what became No Sun. Dating back to ancient Greece, the lament has utilized female voices as a vehicle for expressing communal and personal grief. In her research, Gonzalez considers this tradition within the context of contemporary pop divas, asking the question “What does it mean to be a professional mourner?” or to be a woman hired as an emotional vessel for a historically male composer? Gonzalez’s research considers the creative power of such singers, arguing that while often seen as visceral performers alone, these women are agents in their own right.

I listened, sounds pretty mopey and introspective if that's your thing. A lot of songs seem to start with "I..."

Actually I like the vibe of this. I wasn’t sold on the tracks that came out pre-release, but overall I think it’s really nice. A “mature” album I guess? Contemplative and all that. But still has some of her late-night grooves.
