Moroccan blues

a suitably exotic sample (taken from an episode of Andrew Zimmerman’s Bizarre Foods)

I love DJ Quik, but Kurupt is still the most talentless mainstream rapper around. Just listen to him on this tune:

Cloud nine
She got two sides like Gemini
I'm high
Living my life, I'm hella high
I'm fine
And it's time
See I'm nothing but a pool[???], I'm cool, I'm coolin'
Doin', whenever I wanna be doin'
You and me
Me and you
And my big homie DJ Quik

And so on... I know it's supposed to be a party tune and not a display of rapping skills, but still, is that all he could come up with?!

Lately

autogucci cru (deej), Friday, 10 April 2009 17:49 (fifteen years ago) link

kurupt tends to go on autopilot a lot but calling him untalented is str8 crazy! esp early on he used to drop some fucking amazing verses, at his peak i think he was a great bridge between west coast gangsta and complex lyrical east coast style, like a more gully ras kass or something

d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 10 April 2009 18:02 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah totally otm

u know, even though i think i subconsciously only made this thread in the first place to feel the self-lacerating pain of ilm douches getting happy/getting it all wrong (curmudgeon obv STRAIGHT AWAY gettin his dj/rupture global village mode on lol ouch) this is still a fucking lame effort on yalls part!! i mean yeah fine racionate kurupt's position in the rap discourse landscape all you want if it beats back tuomas' truly spectacular challops ("bra-zilliant atmosphere, without a brassiere" i see no problem here dude) but i just thought it would appeal more to not-just-the-usual folks along some universal silly timbo/bubba sparxx 03 throwback glorious mess lines.

song is still dope to me even after writing all that, so it really must be good - get on boarddddd

r|t|c, Friday, 17 April 2009 14:23 (fifteen years ago) link

(i'm joking about curmudgeon btw - was just hilarious to me that it was him of all people, given everything)

r|t|c, Friday, 17 April 2009 14:25 (fifteen years ago) link

kinda think the thing i love most about this is quik in the middle of the westcoast/morroco storm-in-a-teacup seeing fit to go vaguely whodini horrorcore throughout. zombies! vampires! tales from the crypt! "the voice of great antiquity"! so excellent.

"9xs outta 10" has this mean swagger that really only comes when the only thing you have to fall back on is that you know that you are dope as fuck - you know you aren't going to sell, you know critics aren't going to give a fuck, you know nobody is going to care about the video so you don't do shit but just stand there and rap with your boys and yet it's so singular, so confident, so hard, so nasty, like they can't be bothered to care about the viewer and yet it's such a vibrantly grimy video and song - i'm drunk but shit

Jon Caramanica in the Sunday NY Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/24/arts/music/24play.html

DJ Quik & Kurupt

“We the West,” scream the T-shirts in the video for “9X Outta 10,” by DJ Quik & Kurupt: a riff on DJ Khaled’s “We the Best” catchphrase but also a statement of presence. After all, the Game notwithstanding, where has Los Angeles hip-hop been for the past decade? But rather than revisit worn-out gangster-rap tropes like the rising rappers Nipsey Hussle, Jay Rock and Clyde Carson, these old-timers — Quik is an underloved G-funk architect and Kurupt a recharged veteran of the early Death Row days — reclaim the scene by looking forward. “9X Outta 10” is a small art piece: cyclical raps by Kurupt, a skeletal, jagged soul arrangement by Quik. It’s one of several vibrant futurist reads on Los Angeles hip-hop on “Blaqkout” (Mad Science/Fontana/Universal), out next month, though the duo is still keeping an eye on those who’ve followed them. “You see me in a sea of people/But I’m not equal,” DJ Quik raps on “Cream.” “I’m the prequel/I’m the subject in the peephole.”

maybe, but still pretty great in its own right. I love how quik's voice first comes in in this really unexpected way, with that wet reverb and then he has a funny-ass conversation with himself, especially the "you can fight the temptation"/"naw dawg she's as-si-an/ and she's finer than lacy stacy or kimmy kardashian" bit

love this, imo not better than everything on blaqkout or whatever (never mind quik&sf classixx like "thinkin" or "if u stay ready" or "inside out" but pretty sweeeet. great 2 hear quik & sf back together

plz no more comparisons to 'arty' uk music just bcuz he slows down the tempo, tho

funky house septics, let me drain you of this (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 00:49 (fourteen years ago) link

blaqkout was much more of a break w/ the sound of classic quik, this sounds like a fresh but not altogether unique variation on the kind of stuff hes been doing since the late 90s

n00b jack city (deej), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 01:10 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean that in a broad sense, not in the premier-style bangers inc. sense

er, one kurupt verse obv

shabba canks (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 March 2010 00:45 (fourteen years ago) link

It's not an all-time classic or anything but solid 7/10. I've gotten some burn from it (no pun). Then again I'm a total sucker for big drum vs small production nu-west shit. And Problem holds his own just fine. Love the hook tho.
