Rolling R&B Thread 2010

New decade, new thread right? So, yeah 2009 was kind of a lackluster year R&B-wise (especially in terms of female r&b, the males really stepped their game up though). A lot of the promising releases of the year were either huge disappointments or pushed back to 2010. So this year we have to look forward to new albums from:

Erykah Badu, Sade, Usher, Jazmine Sullivan, Cassie, Ciara, Fantasia, The-Dream, Keri Hilson, Lloyd, Maxwell, Omarion, Kelis, Jamie Foxx, Beyonce, Brandy, Electrik Red, Goapale, Teedra Moses, Raheem DeVaughn, Monica, Trey Songz, Toni Braxton, Jennifer Hudson, Amy Winehouse, Estelle, Ne-Yo, Nina Sky, Kelly Rowland, Chrisina Milian

And the notable debuts:

Ester Dean
Kevin Cossom
Josiah Bell
RichGirl
K. Michelle
Janelle Monae
Shanell

What are you looking forward to? Which trends do you see emerging in r&b circa 2010? Which trends do you hope die out?

The Brainwasher, Friday, 1 January 2010 18:09 (fourteen years ago) link

damn not that half of those are actually gonna get put out this year but looking forward to 2010! 2009 was alright for me, a few great records, handful of very good and then a dropoff, at least for me

This thread is sort of getting off to a slow start lol, but here are a few things I'm feeling at the moment.:

Cassie "Sky Diver"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PD2X_1crtM

I know you guys are probably tired of all of these Cassie leaks that never seem to lead to an actual album but this one is pretty amazing. Produced by Chris N' Teeb (who also did Ciara's "I'm On") and written by James Fauntleroy... has the surreal epicness that I've come to really love about Fauntleroy's writing (not to mention that beautiful melody), he's pretty much the best songwriter in the game right now IMO. His concepts and harmonies are so distinct, you can always tell when you're listening to something he wrote. Cassie is in top form here.. I try not to get my hopes up for Electro Love to ever drop since it's been like 3 years in the making but then I hear songs like this and get excited all over again.

Dirty Money "Hair Down"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25ovXU-MLZo

Between this and "Love Come Down" I'm oddly excited for the Dirty Money project, though Diddy is the worst part of both songs and I'd prefer if Dirty Money was just Dawn & Kalenna. This track, produced by Polow Da Don protege Hit Boy, really showcases why Dawn was the best part of Danity Kane - beautiful runs and harmonies.. you can really hear Brandy's influence here.

Mary J. Blige "Kitchen"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXM7ldB-Oto

So Mary's latest album Stronger with Each Tear has sort of been ignored, and while it isn't among her best work by any means there are some solid tracks on there, "Kitchen" probably being the standout (though "I Love U (Yes I Du)" with the Billy Paul "Circulate" sample is sick too). It's pretty much standard Terius, down to the stacatto toy piano and the ridiculous lyrics. Never let a girl cook in your KITCHENNNNNNNNN! Mary and Terius make a nice team, which you wouldn't think necessarily but this song and "Roses" from Growing Pains are classic Mary with a twist. Terius' quirkiness and sense of humor is a nice change of pace for Mary who can get a bit repetitive lyrically...

Alicia Keys "Love Is Blind"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDL2_qv4LPg

Alicia Keys is boring but she always has at least one great song on her albums and this is the one for me off of the latest one ("Try Sleeping..." is epic too, as well as "Unthinkable (I'm Ready)", not sure why they went with the godawful "Doesn't Mean Anything" as the first single but whatever). My problem with her is that she seems to play everything extremely safe, on this track she switched up her vocals a bit and there's some ENERGY and URGENCY in her singing for once.

Tamya Loren & Terius "Tipsy"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLNv_yFapEw

At first I wasn't feeling this one - I want L.O.S. to switch it up a bit now - but by the end of course I was singing along so I guess I like it now? Repetitive chours, radio killa/gorilla rhyme, AYYYYYYYYY, stacatto piano, Linn drums, are all here lol so if you're not tired of all that stuff yet you should love this!!

J*Davey has actually released something!
http://bandcamp.com/files/23/78/2378449203-1.jpg
It's another mixtape but at least it's all new shit. You can give it a listen and a free download here. Stand out tracks for me are "Get Together" and "Crawl All Over. It's really spacey, dubby.. it's actualy a lot more experimental and noodly then I expected from them, I figured they were headed in a poppier direction since they dropped that "Mama's Back" single last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FN6yMF6cRC0

Also really feeling that Usher "Little Freak" record... and "In My Bag" with T.I
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hW4kvgZ2me4
There's a new Usher leak every day it seems and most of them are pretty damn good, so Raymond vs. Raymond should be a return to form for those who didn't like Here I Stand (though I still contend that Here I Stand is a great album! Don't sleep! I guess it's too grown and sexy for most lol)

Also lex spoke about it a bit in the '09 but that Lloyd EP is awesome. He is terribly consistent isn't he? At this point I'll buy anything Lloyd puts out, here's hoping his next album does better than Lessons in Love. This is my cut off of the Like Me EP:

just got round to the robin thicke album - i really like it! weird, i was always kind of turned off by him before, but i LOVE his feather-lite vocals here.

really want to reiterate how great that lloyd ep is - gorgeous full-sounding production (looked it up and it seems it's by several different people, which i wouldn't have guessed), amazing melodies which just roll out with such confidence, really judicious use of hip-hop samples...lloyd is on top form too.

Anybody hear the new Raheem Devaughan mixtape? I'm curious about it. He's also got a new official cd "Masterpeace" coming soon. According to this Chris Richards Washington Post interview he's gonna have some songs with Marvin Gaye/Curtis Mayfield style serious political lyrics-

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 02:02 (fourteen years ago) link

heh i quite liked that la the darkman cut just for the randomness tho, like if ursh is gonna underline his cluelessness then let it be a entertainingly squiggly line like that at least. (ignore all this if darkman is actually out there generating twitter mixtape heat or whatever these days.)

seems kinda weird to say it but usher is just too old/established in his virtues to be pulling off this young man hype shit again and make another 'yeah!' now. also slightly too much of a weirdo too - i think only other strange dudes who also happened to be recovering from a divorce from their moms were ever gonna feel the everyman realness of that 'papers' bullshit.

i mean i'm not saying dude has to aim at some maxwell/sade level now (not least cos that supposedly grown-up shit on here i stand was fucking terrible) but if he had any grace or self-awareness to throw some money and conviction into it there's a pretty wide expanse of middle ground he can quite easily inhabit, that the public (even *gasp* the kids) would happily follow him into - i'd have to check the record books but i think they used to call it r&b.

for a start how hard would it be to sweep up 14 of these 879 usher-ready cuts lying around gathering dust on ne-yo's mp3 blogleak cutting floor and give them a bit of hot producer slap n tickle? not very, i'm guessing. (remind me again what that particularly egregious one was that lex found tail end of last year?? that was pretty good.)

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 03:10 (fourteen years ago) link

i do agree with rtc that usher could definitely hit the same grown man but not old man 'niche' that ne-yo does -- it takes a certain amount of grace & charm and maybe usher just doesn't know how to convey those things anymore because everything he's done has been so ham-handed from "daddy's home" to "love in this club" to even stuff i like like "papers"

i mean he had a song called "moving mountains" ffs -- the lush sorta disco stuff that ne-yo does would suit well imo

nagl wayne (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 03:54 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i'm not sure - to be fair usher is probably right thinking he's still in a (pretty unique) position where he can aim younger than ne-yo stylistically, or at very least can be going for something similar to 'closer' let's say. ideally he should be in competition with timberlake, but with neyoian song content i guess.

i like "Papers" but i guess sad as it is to say "Lil Freak" is probably the best chance he has of a real club record of any magnitude right now, and that song has Nicki Minaj reciting the names of Santa's reindeer in that middle-schooler-making-fun-of-retards voice and a chorus that always sounds to me like "see my little prick"

tom b's enthusiastic review of it was pretty bizarre -- it strikes me as such a bankrupt & DOA song -- it's hard to even get excited about polow anymore

altho the review did use the phrase "Ush's chiffon moan" which is a true triumph of tom b. vernacular, maybe my favorite that i've run across besides "bruised-growl retro-punk" in the gaslight anthem review that i re-read this weekend

Haven't gotten around to Ollusion but wanted to chime in that Mario's D.N.A. from last year is being heavily felt lately. I liked "Break Up" but didn't expect there to be so much more to like. L.O.S. track uses Fray-like piano in conjunction with a pretty strong beat for a track that could have crossed over imho. "Before She Said Hi" is a 90s hip-house sound that doesn't get dusted off much these days. Tricky/Dream tracks are quality if not revelatory. Really only the Jim Jonsin track doesn't land. It's a solid album in a solid year for R&B.

lmao @ lloyd trying to sell lines like "i'm a beast, i'm a dog" and "i turn into a manimal every time that the moon is full". his voice is so damn girly that when one verse started i spun around thinking my wife was in the room.

some dude, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:01 (fourteen years ago) link

on one listen i agree with dyao, i like the song and the beat is actually really great, but it's not the perfect fit that the lush pixelcloud arrangements on lloyd's last ep were (did anyone else d/l it in the end? felt as though i was raving into a void about it - doesn't help that i can't think of a great deal to say about it but it's really pretty special, and i go back to it all the time)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:14 (fourteen years ago) link

i thought it was v solid and of a high quality compared to most stuff that came out last year, but enough of a definite shift in content and production towards a more realistic(/generic) male r&b artist model to have killed his magic somewhat - for me anyway. i wasn't mad at it though, he gave the auteurish post-inc sound a good few years go and it wasn't getting him anywhere so fair play to him changing it up at young money now.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:46 (fourteen years ago) link

lloyd's ep was one of the great releases of 2009. if the-dream wasn't around I'd be claiming it was the prime rnb release.

i want more of that, to be honest. why couldn't that have been the foundation for an album? it's not like it screamed "INNOVATIVE" but it's damn well made it's still unique, the tone of it, the melodies. this one is 'decent', but it's nothing like what I want from Lloyd. I want the smoothness, the somber melancholy of "a night off"

abcfsk, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:48 (fourteen years ago) link

baffled @ the two of you seeming to think the ep is on a par with the previous albums - i'm not saying there arent the odd residual resonances still lingering (which always will, with his voice) but that's all they really are to my ears.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:55 (fourteen years ago) link

I agree with you guys; that Lloyd EP was a revelation. I don't know why it was buried as a free download EP at the end of the year when nobody was paying attention... if he had added a couple extra songs, that would have been an amazing record. Young Goldie really had a cohesive tone that it carried throughout all seven songs, which was a refreshing break from the design-by-committee sound of too many R&B records.

I was really excited to hear Lloyd's follow-up full length, but this new song actually makes me a little less so.

Evan R, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:04 (fourteen years ago) link

ship had the best criticism in this in that it's a bit incongruous for wispy ass lloyd to be all "i'm a beast, i'm a dog" -- otherwise i think it's a great song

I said this on another thread but I really like the Raheem DeVaughn album. Excellent points: 1) He uses Dr. Cornel West as a hypeman on several (skippable but hilarious) tracks. 2) No "Text Messages." ("Bulletproof" remains, but I don't hate it. 3) The topical songs aren't earthshaking but they are heartfelt and sometimes kinda inspiring. Don't listen to the 8-minute posse cut "Nobody Wins a War" if you are into realpolitik or if you have a low tolerance for Jill Scott doing spoken-word pacifist slam poetry though. 4) Six songs more or less in a row about sex, including the soon-to-be-infamous "B.O.B.", which stands for...naw, I don't wanna spoil it. It's not "Bombs Over Baghdad." 5) Kinda gotta get the 2-disc version or you won't get the 11-minute house jam "Lose Control" OR the Bun B feature on "Wing and a Prayer." "Soldier Story" also goes pretty hard.

rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 18:31 (fourteen years ago) link

That Raheem DeVaughn album was one of the year's big disappointments for me. It has a couple transcendentally good songs, "I Don't Care" in particular, but a lot of the didactic political songs (not to mention the Cornel West interludes) are really intolerable. Raheem has a great voice, but nothing to say that isn't really trite.

funky house septics, let me drain you of this (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 00:51 (fourteen years ago) link

what makes the lloyd ep so special for me is, yeah, how coherent and thorough within its self-containment it is; there's a really strong sense of overcoming adversity throughout, whether re: lloyd's career or the various emotionally frozen women he sings to who find love impossible or unimaginable; or even the weirdly visceral extended drugs metaphor on "pusha" - and yet there's nothing strained or effortful about how these are resolved, lloyd makes it sound so pretty and graceful - he makes overcoming adversity sound alluring. the melodies throughout are always on point but i find the looped guitar samples on "think of me" and "everyday" particularly irresistible. and i never noticed how great the lyrics of the chorus are - "every cloud has its time before the sun" <3 <3

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 10:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Lloyd's voice is also so damn weird, and so fragile that it's easy to drown out. The Young Goldie EP really complimented it in a way I've never heard before. In part because of the silky production, it reminds me of the first Al Green/Willie Mitchell albums. Before Willie Mitchell, Al Green was trying his best to sing out shouting soul-man anthems, which really didn't play to his strengths. Then Willie Mitchell created a softer sonic template that flattered Green's voice without overwhelming it. I think Lloyd is the type of singer who needs that attention.

not sure what's up w/ foxx's new album -- speak french was pretty bad but i like this a lot better -- uptempo, glitzy beat & his voice sounds really great -- this is a low qual rip but the cdq could end up being very nice - we'll see where it leads

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dW63Rp8bILQ

who knows what r les is up to -- can't imagine who would allow him to put out a new album after his 09 output, but i guess he's still making tracks -- this won't make any fans of people who don't dig the dude, but for stans it's a nice switch up -- sounds kind of early 00s to me, all stuttery, short guitar plucks & punchy drums that almost mimic timbo's beatboxing era -- not to make too much of it tho

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ3eCYHCi4k

& maybe this will find more of a home here than on the drake thread -- his new single with terius -- conflicting reports on whether or not this is the final version or not -- i would tend to say not considering terius doesn't really do much of anything with his verse (it's more of an extended outro than anything) & his vocals are mixed super low -- and even tho this wasn't produced by tricky or los it sounds like something that could've been on the back half of love/hate to me, it has a "purple kisses" vibe (or "bed," i guess -- minus los's popping drums) -- i think the chorus is really pretty tho, it hits that sort of sublime weightless falsetto that the second half of the chorus of "best i ever had" did i think

So I know you guys aren't really feeling Usher this go-around, but have y'all gave the album a listen? 'Cuz there are some tracks on there... I mean, there were some leaks that I think should've made the album and it certainly isn't his greatest album but this track in particular:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dz05RzrcjYg

Is kind of next level. Produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis... intergalactic slow-jam, it's one of the best songs I've heard all year.

The Brainwasher, Monday, 22 March 2010 06:51 (fourteen years ago) link

corrine bailey the chef (J0rdan S.), Monday, 22 March 2010 06:54 (fourteen years ago) link

and yeah j0rdan that R. Les track is very early 00s, wouldn't sound out of place on a Jagged Edge album or something like that. It's kind of early for 00s revivalism isn't it? lol... The Drake track is pretty chill, he's much better as an R&B dude than he is as a rapper actually, he should stick to that...

The Brainwasher, Monday, 22 March 2010 06:55 (fourteen years ago) link

few other tracks :

Monica "Stay or Go"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RTkjCgL6LU

haven't really gotten a chance to give the Monica album a proper listen but I had to post this track because I've been in love with it since I heard the demo, and Monica's version is great. It's kind of your typical Ne-Yo midtempo until the beat switches up in the chorus. Such a pretty melody though, and come to think of it Ne-Yo has been sort of quiet lately so it's nice to hear something he's written... he needs to come out with a new album soon.

Fantasia "Control Freak"
http://usershare.net/egzgx2a2hru7
Can't find a youtube for this one, but it's worth downloading... Fantasia could sing practically anything and I'd be in love with it, she's my favorite r&b vocalist of this generation pretty easily (well... her and Jazmine Sullivan). This song happens to be an excellent baby makin' jam in the vein of "I Nominate U" from her last album (which is a classic!)... production is very minimal, sensual... I can hear the sweat dripping practially. I hope this makes the album.

Kelly Rowland "Smooches"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8hucsspgcQ

There's some INTERNET DRAMA over this song since it was supposed to be Teyana Taylor of "Google Me" fame's first single and Kelly apparently "stole" it from her... the song is cool, I would much rather hear Teyana on it to be honest, Kelly isn't really convincing...

Marsha Ambrosius "She Don't Matter"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsuQyruhQto

This song was on LeToya's seriously slept-on Lady Love album from last year. It was one of the standouts on that album, and it's the standout on Marsha's Yours Sincerely mixtape (though the whole thing is great and worth downloading)... Marsha really is an excellent songwriter.

I'm kind of bored with R&B recently to be honest. We're in need of an R&B jesus or something, someone to save this shit 'cuz things are looking pretty lame :-\ I need Return of the Ahnk to leak now please.

all three jam & lewis songs on this usher are wonderful as fuck - so impressive the way they've dipped right back in with a perfectly-adapted modern style (although otoh who better to guide a dreamy revival perhaps). tricky stewart rises to their level with 'pro lover' too, a great and nicely judged beat he wouldn't have done for anyone else this side of like 2003 say.

pretty much like the whole middle section with all this stuff - 'papers' sounds much much better in this context, and 'foolin around' - which should be lol confessions shamelessness - actually no, it is exactly that, but very welcome and not as forced as it you'd think it oughta be. 'guilty' is cute but has the curious reflexive effect of making this part of the album suddenly seem like a dope cheerfully mackin 2nd jeremih effort. maybe just me eh.

all in all not a disaster; shame about the still-dire bookends and the clumsy danja cut.

Glad to hear. I've liked almost everything I've heard from the new Usher album (save for "Daddy's Home," and even that only because the lyrics make me gag.) "Papers" is the perfect little single in my mind; it's such a pure sentiment, a nice change from some of his more over the top moments. I think it's Usher at his most earnest and sympathetic.

Also, that Jose James song is nice. A little slight, but it worms its way into your head, like a better version of the Dilla-esque, Stones Throw neo-soul singers who always forget to add hooks to their songs. What's the story behind this guy?

Hey guys, I've been bored of r&b for a few months and not paying attention except for like Sade/Erykah/whatever. What's did I miss?

Very little, I think. The new Future of R&B mixtape (vol. 31, I think, with Jay Sean) has a lot of nice stuff on it. The Raheem DeVaughn I thought was a disappointment, though. Very schizophrenic. The new Usher album has a few more decent songs on it than I think this forum gives it credit for, especially in its final half ("Guilty" is almost up there with "Foolin' Around" and "Papers), but probably isn't worth buying.

I guess the onus is on the new Erykah Badu album to tide me over until Love King, and thankfully, it actually seems up to the challenge.

yeah, the Trey Songz overkill is neverending around here, it feels like. i mentioned on the TS thread that they're also playing the shit out of "You Belong To Me," which isn't even on most copies of his album.

the only way i can cope with "Neighbors" is by mocking the ridiculous way he says "knock knock knock" at the beginning of the song every time it comes on.

She's pretty cool, I've been following her on youtube for a while now, since before she got signed to JD... she's recorded a bunch of singles ("Boy Stop" with Bow Wow was pretty cool) but nothing has really caught on.. I think "You're The One" could be it for her though, it's a great song. I don't know if signing with JD was the best move tho, same thing with Brandon Hines (who recently signed to JD)....

Yonder Mountain Zing Band (Tape Store), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:54 (fourteen years ago) link

i was sort of disappointed by that video tbh.

i like "ride" but it really doesn't feel like a lead single...like "go girl", it's the kind of song which could well wend its way into one's affections eventually (i mean, i do LIKE it) but it doesn't exactly jump out as a great song from the off, like "high price" did or like "speechless" does. it feels like an attempt to make up for fucking up "high price", and luda gives off a distinct air of "whaaat, i've got to help this chick out AGAIN? man."

"basic instinct" is funny though! works better w/the video. still reasonably excited about this project. at least it seems to be being handled with a degree of professionalism this time.

god i am STILL bitter about "high price" and "echo" never being singles, i literally have recurring dreams about the superhero x james bond x "die another day" video "high price" was surely made to have :*(

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 16:01 (fourteen years ago) link

i thought they floated "high price" out as a single and it didn't really catch on so they scrapped it? anyway i think "ride" is just as good as "high price", superfluous luda verse aside -- i love the way the "ride" chorus just grinds itself into the ground

artie flange (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 17:22 (fourteen years ago) link

that video is aight -- ciara is WS hall of fame tho, good lord

artie flange (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 17:23 (fourteen years ago) link

i have no idea if ciara still has a viable career -- people who remember "love, sex and magic" probably don't even remember that it was her who sang it -- but "ride" sounds huge to me idk -- huge in a way that was huge in 2005, but still

at this point i'm just really excited about the album and hope that it gets released without 8 delays and her going into the studio with redone

artie flange (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 17:29 (fourteen years ago) link

"high price" leaked way early and they panicked and scrapped it as the single - "go girl" was the single that didn't catch on. then "never ever" was the second single that didn't catch on. then finally "love sex magic" got it off the ground. but as you say, in a generic kind of way whereby no one actually cared that ciara sang it - whereas "high price" or "echo" as a lead single would have had so much singular force of personality that, even if they were divisive like "russian roulette" or whatever, they'd have made ciara as a pop star a much more viable continued prospect.

well, she kinda deliberately released 'difficult' singles and talked about not making another pop blockbuster, and it still went platinum, which isn't a big dropoff considering that the last album with a bazillion hits was only 2x plat.

this is funny! 'dance with you' by the futhamuckas - like an early low budget black eyed peas, except they can't dance. found while browsing thru electrik red's back catalogue and shonky phone camera videos .. it probably belongs more in a rolling pop thread but i dont go on that. don't bother with their earlier songs by the way! but this one is sort of impossible not to like (someone will probly hate it within the next 30 seconds)

and demi has released two really great pop-rock albums in the past two years (both way better than the two paramore albums i've heard). i don't see why her releasing an R&B album is irrelevant to this thread.

I have an iTunes playlist called "That Feeling" (Tape Store), Monday, 26 July 2010 13:50 (thirteen years ago) link

i love her albums too but tbh i have a hard time imagining her voice/delivery working in an R&B context, could be like that Ashlee/Timbaland album or something. so i mean, it might work, but until it does I'm not getting my hopes up.

some dude, Monday, 26 July 2010 14:02 (thirteen years ago) link

also looks like she said "more R&B/pop," which makes me think she's not going to have Ne-Yo or The-Dream write a bunch of slow jams or anything.

Pretty sure she's said that she wants to work with The-Dream. Anyway she was on to some Mariah type shit at times (bridge on got dynamite) on her last album so more rnb is perfectly logical.

Do you still stand by this? The more I listen to it, the more think there's a great album to be constructed from Raymond Vs. Raymond if you cut out a little bit of the pap (and maybe the songs that make Usher sound like a total asshole, like "Lil Freak") and replace them with some of his recent non-album material featured on some of the recent Future of R&B mixes.

janice (surm), Monday, 26 July 2010 20:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I think it's OK, but Glenn Lewis already used that Stevie Wonder sample to much better effect, and I think the song makes Usher sound like more a bad guy than he intends it to. On Confessions, he played the roll of the flawed by lovable cheat really well, but on Raymond Vs. Raymond he's not nearly as sympathetic. It's hard to take pity on him when he's barking sexual orders at easy conquests. Other songs depict him as a slave to his libido, but on this one he's totally in control, bullying a woman into a threesome she doesn't seem comfortable with. It just seems remarkably mean-spirited.

Are you talking about What's the 901 or is there a new one? I've been enjoying What's the 901. I don't think anything tops "You Should've Killed Me," but every track that pairs her with a rap artist (Gucci, Missy, Three 6 Mafia) really works; she has the brassy presence to hold her own against all of them.

Anybody know if she has a real album on the way? Same goes with Miguel and Dondria; I keep reading about vague album release details for them, but can't find any concretes.

i wouldn't say he's superhated -- he's an object of a lot of jokez among mostly me and Rev and J0rdan, but i think most R&B fans like at least some of his songs

i don't know about that, demographically speaking Trey seems kinda like the perfect midpoint between Usher and Chris Brown that his stardom seems somewhat inevitable. even when he was an also-ran for a couple years he was steadily on the rise, it's not like he was the 5th most famous guy on Slip N Side for almost a decade like Ross. (xpost)

richie goingham (some dude), Saturday, 21 August 2010 11:58 (thirteen years ago) link

dunno about that, feels like his first two albums both made zero splash and by the time of the third r&b had sunk low enough that he was the only guy of his ilk around. gucci and drake spots sealed the deal.

he does seem to be getting better with fame though tbf.

I know I'm eons late on this, but What's the 901? is really something. 'You Should've Killed Me' and 'Self-Made' are great. Ditto 'Bad 4 My Health'. And 'Hit Em in the Mouth' is sort of perfect.

I could take or leave the track with R Kelly and Number One, but yeah. K. Michelle is the real thing. Sorry, Lex.

I keep seeing Keyshia Cole and Mary J comparisons, but that's not quite right. Is there another precedent for this kind of thing that I'm missing?

MTV gave some details about Miguel's upcoming album:

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1646404/20100824/miguel_1_.jhtml

Now, with his debut, also called All I Want Is You, tentatively slated for a February release, the singer hopes he can win over even more fans with his mix of edgy R&B and inspirations as eclectic as David Bowie, James Brown and Queen.

"I think the operative word as opposed to bringing R&B back, my intension is to take it forward," he said. "So as we push boundaries, boundaries are there for a reason. They have their anchors, they have their foundations, and pushing those away or trying to move them is gonna take effort. That's OK. That's what we as artists are here for: to push those boundaries and explore outside and push things further.

Sounds pretty good to me. Also: H/T to Janelle Monae for making it cool for R&B singers to cite Bowie.

and certainly hate anything of that prissy, arch, clever-clever, too-cool-for-soul approach being brought into r&b

For decades, R&B singers have been teasing influences by citing influences way more eclectic than the ones they actually draw from, so I'm sure the record will be more Confessions than Aladdin Sane.

How big of a hit is "All I Want is You"? It's one of my favorite singles of the year, but I haven't heard it on the radio yet, so I have no sense of its reach.

Ditto. I liked TP3 and Double Up alright, but in general his newer albums have been really uptight, like he's singing with clenched fists and about to pop a blood vessel in his neck; they almost put me on edge. He had this wonderful, breezy vibe going for him with Chocolate Factory and Happy People. I'd love to see him tap that again.

Just catching up one some old stuff from this thread and hit play on Alicia Keys "Love Is Blind". Scrolled down, totally zoned out for a bit, and completely forgot who I was listening to. Loving it, trying to think who the heck I'd consciously decided to listen to less than a minute ago, and didn't realise/remember it was Alicia Keys until I scrolled back up and checked. So basically this is great because it sounds nothing like her.

one hood ass geometry teacher (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 05:56 (thirteen years ago) link

i have yet to listen to the songz except for the middle part which i really liked -- skipped around a bit & it seemed boring -- his last album was like... a 6.5 or 7/10 which i think is prob his peak

banaka socka flame (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 05:59 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i'd agree anticipation/ready is most likely his peak

after one listen I'm really feeling the PLEASURE portion of this ("red lipstick," "unusual" and "doorbell"), the rest is quite generic/boring besides a few songs ("can't be friends," "made to be together"), and his r. kelly impersonation is kind of obnoxious on some of these tracks

one hood ass geometry teacher (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 06:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Gulab jamun (Gulab Jamun) into the syrup please. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 17:56 (thirteen years ago) link

he comes across to me, when he's not being boring, as a boring person who's making a real effort to be goofy, but he just has an odd idea of goofiness and hence ends up being actually quite weird

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 18:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't think much of that comes thru in his music at all

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:22 (thirteen years ago) link

like i don't think 'ready' is endearingly goofy or charming or anything... i think he succeeds in being exceedingly good at generic 2000s r&b even tho a lot of his songs just end up as non-entities -- the first trey song i really loved was "can't help but wait" which i thought was a ne-yo song for like two months -- also he's actually attractive

"i invented sex" & "neighbors know my name" are more successful for being great slogans & sonically pleasing than because trey's goofy personality shines through

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:27 (thirteen years ago) link

sidenote: you don't like "wonderwoman" or "gotta make it" ? :(

one hood ass geometry teacher (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:29 (thirteen years ago) link

agree btw I don't think his music is weird or goofy at all, but I guess my barometer for goofiness in r&b (r. kelly, oran juice jones, etc.) is kind of high lol i mean "neighbors know my name" is kind of silly/goofy conceptually (plus the "KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!s" are hilarious) but for the most part he's more on the generic side than anything else

one hood ass geometry teacher (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:31 (thirteen years ago) link

my forever favorite songz song is "i need a girl" cuz i think it sounds like something from 'confessions'

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:33 (thirteen years ago) link

really? always thought that song was generic stargate rehash

one hood ass geometry teacher (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:35 (thirteen years ago) link

it could also be that & still be great

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:40 (thirteen years ago) link

xps yeah not sure i really accept the use of hyuk-hyuk goofy, or rather in the sense of him trying to be, wrt songz - his is a ridiculous whirl of affectations sincerely done in the name of modern swag i feel. or yeah, cartoonish, in terms of caricature strictly, cos he is a blank slate still fundamentally .

to this end though i'm finding passion, pain & pleasure uniquely victim to its guest-spot allegiances; 'bottoms up', and its nicki verse, casts songz and his songz in this hugely entertaining and often hilarious rococo theatrical spotlight, with its genteel loverman's picnic fidelity and rarefied moonscapes coming like a weirdly chintzy tongue-in-cheek harps in the bathroom/perfumed loo-roll vibe ("making luuuuv faces", the janelle-monae-eat-yr-heart-out 'pain' interlude!) (and strangely enough though the kells debt is undeniable, i feel i hear more of a pre-kells new jack swing playfulness in there?) - but then 'unusual' is a horrible misstep that retrospectively mires the album in all of (the featuring) drake & boi-1da's weaselly 2nd-bland desperate pointlessness, nearly spoiling it completely were it not for the awesome 'doorbell' pulling clear right after. ("this bedroom is my colosseum"! - either you love the silly grandeur or you don't.)

i predict i will be sick of this album in a week. but in a general sense the question i think it asks of you is, would you rather reward an idiot genuinely doing his best, doing something at least, or would you prefer to hand a limp gas-station bouquet to the more artistically talented guy half-assing it, like the-dream? songz has endeared himself to me.

r|t|c, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:55 (thirteen years ago) link

i think the album is good! i gravitate towards pragmatism -- trey is our r&b star, i accept him

not that this album is anywhere near any dream album but okay

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:58 (thirteen years ago) link

'ready' has great singles but i think this album is actually better

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:59 (thirteen years ago) link

also - and this will probably be of still even less interest to anyone here - the guy songz most reminds me of right now is aidonia the dancehall dude, who i always felt was a similarly annoying vybz&busy-biting tabula rasta before he finally recently came into his own quirky lane as others faded while he maintained

never understand when you say this -- what song on Confessions even has that kind of vibe or production?

some dude, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 20:07 (thirteen years ago) link

what resonates about trey to me more than his album is the general sound of his stuff -- some stuff like "say ahh" & "lol :-)" & " i need a girl" are outliers, but the smooth, soft, almost trance-y tone of the synths on tons of his songs stand out for me -- how understated the drums are always too, either always sort of rippling or just offering an understated thump -- it makes his albums distinctly modern sounding but also sort of classy -- i can see why he would be the male r&b star of choice for older heads -- sometimes the songz lag as songs but there's a great flow & feel to this album that isn't broken up really by it being 'sectioned' or by the singles (or possible singles)

the guitar in "i need a girl" reminds me of the guitar on "confessions pt 2"

I don't think songz really plays to his strengths on this album, "doorbell" is definitely the best track, the 'Pleasure' section is the strongest to me because it sounds like Ready/anticipation, I feel like he's going for a kind of classicism with some of the production that doesn't suit him, so it comes off as really boring.(see: "yo side of the bed" off of ready

one hood ass geometry teacher (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 20:14 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah see i think his interaction with that classicism is exactly what's not boring about it all (and i str8-up came round to loving 'yo side of the bed' btw - lolz at the video). how he is on the pleasure section is perhaps a very particular lloydian frame he could corner the market in but i wouldn't go so far as to call it a strength, just a less busy avenue he's fine in.

i really can't imagine wanting to listen to a trey songz album, even if i like a few of his songs

The Reverend, Thursday, 16 September 2010 00:44 (thirteen years ago) link

i dont hear anything 'nursery rhyme' about it but i totally get where jordan & rtc are coming from -- this guy just executes different types sorta generically. i think maybe thats why i prefer the float-y lloyd-y songs the most, his whispy-ness sorta fits in w/ that better?? whereas otherwise, including the stuff where hes being omg wacky, it never feels like his own identity is tied to the wackiness, that it was kinda a business decision & hes going thru the motions performing dry versions of 'wacky'

you cant see me markers (deej), Thursday, 16 September 2010 00:49 (thirteen years ago) link

nah i don't agree w/ the business decision view at all - trey wants to be popular, adapts to the times & is happy to perform. it's fair to say he might be a dull fellow that sometimes puts himself a little at odds with his vocal gymnastics but anything more than that is too strong imo.

i feel like singling out the 'pleasure'/floaty thing is kind of a backhanded evaluation as well - isn't it only just a particular quality of voice (rather than what the singer's doing with it, or how it works in terms of the singer's persona or whatever) that compliments these aesthetic radox wonderlands ppl wanna curate. like drake all suddenly elevated to being a permissable r&b artist on the basis of him not having enough character to perturb 'shut it down'.

'doorbell' is especially nice because songz finds a space to vamp just the way he does throughout the rest of the album, ie the sections of the album aren't nearly as defined as you guys seem to make out. like i know i lauded the "bedroom is my colosseum" line earlier but the fun of it is "... ring the bell i'll let you in" right after - an enormous colosseum with a regular door and dinky musical doorbell is kinda pretty much the very essence of the ymts experience.

I think the latest Future of R&B (vol. 36) makes a strong case for Trey Songz. It's an unusually off volume, heavy on weepy, serious songs, but Trey's contributions are so brisk and light on their toes. They're really refreshing. So this is interesting re the fragmentation of audiences: "I Invented Sex" is the first r&b #1 since 1992 not to place in the top 40 of the pop charts. Three more songs this year have done the same. I suspect downloading has a lot to do with this: with white crossover audiences being more likely to download legally (or at all?) than black r&b fans, driving music mostly consumed by black audiences down the charts. (Ironically, one of the r&b chart-toppers suffering from this disjunct is Robin Thicke.)

The Reverend, Saturday, 9 October 2010 16:09 (thirteen years ago) link

^^really interesting theory. do you think it can be extrapolated to...pop generally? w/r/t the sounds that black pop artists are jumping on in order to maintain commercial success? also, is the whole "white audiences are more likely to d/l legally" simply socio-economics or are there other factors?

in other news i've got around to the mmts album and can't get enough of the last third or so of it, from "red lipstick" on, just gorgeous layered lushness. the backing vox on "doorbell"!!

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 9 October 2010 17:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i'd noticed that trend, and one of my poll thread ideas that i hadn't finished doing all the legwork for yet was recent R&B #1's with low Hot 100 peaks. i think it happens for different reasons -- sometimes it's a slow jam by a non-superstar like Melanie Fiona that just doesn't cross over to pop radio, sometimes it's someone like Trey or Usher who has a bunch of hits out at the same time on R&B radio, but pop radio just sticks with "Say Aah" or "OMG" etc.

some dude, Saturday, 9 October 2010 18:21 (thirteen years ago) link

here's a pretty crazy statistic: 6 of the 9 R&B chart-toppers in 2009 were top 10 pop hits; zero of the 8 R&B chart-toppers so far in 2010 have been top 10 pop hits.

some dude, Saturday, 9 October 2010 18:29 (thirteen years ago) link

I wonder if this crazy statistic some dude mentioned was with pre-Thriller early 80s r&b. People like to talk about the r&b ghetto that 80s r&b was in due to the disco backlash when apparently white US audiences were decrying any black artist singing a song with a beat and a bass guitar. Their may have been hits on the r&b charts but did not make a dent at all on the pop charts. It makes me wonder if the ghettoization of r&b is happening again.

I know that people will say that we have Beyonce, Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Trey Songz (to an extent), Usher and a few others, but it seems like their isn't a big foundation to support minor r&b stars like in the 90s. It's either go pop or die in the r&b ghetto. I know this has been the attitude of lates in a lot of blogs covering popular r&b who rather talk about chart statistics of an artists rather than the actual quality of the song. And if a song by a minor r&b star is received well they will say it won't go pop (meaning white people won't like it) so what is the point liking the song.

On the other hand, I don't think r&b fans can give a shit about a song crossing over but with pop and dance elements being more prevalent in r&b artists songs I wonder if they will implicitly think "it must go pop or die" when they hear a new song. Excuse me for rambling but this has been on my mind ever since the 2008 or so.

lilsoulbrother, Saturday, 9 October 2010 18:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Another thought is if popular r&b shifts back to a more traditional sound (or at least retro 90s style), will the pop audience grab on to it or will they seek more pop/dance voraciously? Would this cause the Beyonces and Rihannas to be more pop (which is already starting to show with Rihanna)?

lilsoulbrother, Saturday, 9 October 2010 18:51 (thirteen years ago) link

I think you're exaggerating wrt the "R&B ghetto" - artists like Monica, Fantasia, even somebody like Kem (who I point to as exemplary as this disconnect between R&B audience and the mainstream, since his album debuted at #2 behind Eminem with no major pop single/the support of Urban AC) have all managed to do very respectable numbers without any pop support whatsoever. Even someone like Keyshia Cole, who's only had 1 real crossover hit ("Let It Go"), manages to go platinum every time.I think the "R&B ghetto" is a better place to be than the "rap ghetto", comparatively, if you're not a crossover rap star you aren't selling shit at all (if you're lucky enough to even get a release date)

Pitchfork.com, a music recommendation Web site (The Brainwasher), Saturday, 9 October 2010 18:52 (thirteen years ago) link

and yeah, I've noticed this trend for a while now and I actually am glad about it, because it kind of lets r&b artists make R&B without having to make concessions to pop radio. Monica's comeback is one of the year's biggest stories IMO and lays a really solid blueprint for others to follow.

Pitchfork.com, a music recommendation Web site (The Brainwasher), Saturday, 9 October 2010 18:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Wait wow that Keyshia Cole song "Let it Go" was a crossover hit!!! I guess I need to start looking at Billboard charts more. I wasn't trying to exaggerate on the "r&b ghetto" concept. It's just something I've noticed when reading about r&b. Their seems to be so much emphasis on crossing over that I sometimes get confused.

In addition, I also noticed a mini trend of making r&b without concessions to pop radio with songs such as Amerie's "Why R U", Monica's "Everything to Me", and a few of Usher's r&b ballads in his latest album. Also, Mary J. Blige said she was going back to hear first two albums early sounds. But I honestly didn't know how well received this trend is going to be received.

And who the hell is Kem???

Now that I googled him, I remember seeing him on The Mo'nique Show two days ago. His music is pretty bland if I can remember, but it is perfect for the demographic for her show. "Grown Folks" r&b is so perplexing to me. Is it hard to be sonically interesting while still being "grown?"

lilsoulbrother, Saturday, 9 October 2010 19:11 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the problem is they're trying too hard to sound "grown & tasteful" and it just translates as boring. Grown folks r&b can be great when done well - Anita Baker, Phylis Hyman, Sade, Maxwell, Luther, etc. all work in a "grown & sexy" aesthetic i'd say.

Pitchfork.com, a music recommendation Web site (The Brainwasher), Saturday, 9 October 2010 19:14 (thirteen years ago) link

I sometimes forget those people you mentioned are "grown and tasteful" because I don't think they are/were daunted with catering to that particular audience. They did what they wanted to do. The latest crop of "grown folk" r&b are very self conscious and it shows in their work. Their also is a economic class stigma attached to it as well.

yeah she does kind of go overboard on that song lol (as is to be expected given the fact that it's from a broadway musical), but otherwise on songs like "Bittersweet, "Even Angels," "Falling In Love Tonight" she kinds of tones all of the hollering down. re: fantasia - yeah, to an extent she tones down the vocal showboating somewhat, but there's still this awesome generosity in the way she draws out certain words and just lets these melodies on melodies roll out luxuriously. "falling in love tonight" is a great example of this - you can imagine how in most hands it might be a somewhat bog-standard song, but fantasia draws you into it totally.

the piano line on "even angels" is sooo "wuthering heights"!

I know that people will say that we have Beyonce, Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Trey Songz (to an extent), Usher and a few others, but it seems like their isn't a big foundation to support minor r&b stars like in the 90s. And if a song by a minor r&b star is received well they will say it won't go pop (meaning white people won't like it) so what is the point liking the song.

i agree with all of this...i don't know, this weird separation between "r&b" and "pop", this is surely a recent development, right? or was it just coming of age in the turn-of-the-century sweet spot that makes me assume they shouldn't be that distinct? i'm not really talking about grown-and-sexy r&b or post-neo-soul - music for adults has always done its thing with less critical attention than music for the kidz; ciara's current situation exemplifies it for me, where she's visibly caught between being a pop star and an r&b star.

I think you're exaggerating wrt the "R&B ghetto" - artists like Monica, Fantasia, even somebody like Kem (who I point to as exemplary as this disconnect between R&B audience and the mainstream, since his album debuted at #2 behind Eminem with no major pop single/the support of Urban AC) have all managed to do very respectable numbers without any pop support whatsoever

maybe it's a big ghetto but it's a ghetto nonetheless - how much critical attention have monica and fantasia received? unless you're actually checking for them i'm guessing it's perfectly possible to be unaware they even have material out. from a uk perspective it's even worse of course - it took me SIX MONTHS to track down jazmine sullivan's UK PR, and when i did, he outlined the UK promo campaign as follows:

We’ll be releasing her album alongside the US on the 29th November, though just letting it become available no marketing or press push.

Hey Lex, the Monica album is a solid r&b album. If you are just looking for a singer singing in a direct 90s r&b style. I like it because she seems to finally restrain her voice which makes the texture of it all the richer. She is slowly competing against my preference of Brandy who has great texture to her voice but has limited range.

lilsoulbrother, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 18:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh btw, thank you lex for agreeing with me. I thought I was going crazy with observing this trend of r&b. It's creepy to me that their is this "need to go pop" sentiment that is becoming so prevalent. Maybe it has always been there in the r&b market, but it is more heigten due to the internet. Maybe it is driven by the recession and the music industry wants to have maximum profits on the few releases they have out. Their probably are sociological aspects with this sentiment as well.

lilsoulbrother, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 18:35 (thirteen years ago) link

The thing is though that until very recently, there wasn't a lot of music that was very definitely r&b rather than pop-qua-pop that was successful with crossover audiences but now it seems like nothing is splitting the difference. Why is that?

ENBBQ (The Reverend), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 18:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Maybe it has always been there in the r&b market, but it is more heigten due to the internet.

yeah r&b's always existed in this weird area whereby it's its own genre with its own rules and values - ie integrity - but that's also placed a premium on commercial success (and unlike hip-hop, which can get away with inward-facing localism, this generally means chart success and mainstream profile). so because it's so "pop" already, it rarely gets away with being viewed as "art" - ie, r&b artists are generally not forgiven by critics or fans for perceived commercial failures. (poor ciara.)

Maybe it is driven by the recession and the music industry wants to have maximum profits on the few releases they have out.

yeah, when this trend started to hit a couple of years ago it was easy to attribute it to the recession making labels taking an even more conservative, safety-first approach than they normally would.

also, the last few years have really seen pro-pop blogs entrench their values in the mainstream (where their idea of pop is a specific aesthetic rather than "what's in the charts") - from popjustice to perez hilton, broadly; and a LOT of them have a fit of the vapours every time anything that codes overtly black comes into view, like they'll get cooties from it. it's most obvious w/r/t their fear of rappers, but it also applies to any r&b star who's perceived to be not trying hard enough to be all happy and pop and shiny.

oh yeah, i heard half the jazmine sullivan album today. wait'll you all hear "redemption", that song will blow you away. spoken word/rapped verses, one from a crack whore's perspective and one from a male domestic abuser's perspective, and an absolutely massive gospel chorus. there's also a mj-esque disco number called "don't make me wait" where she actually sings with restraint and subtlety (!). and a big retro-sounding ballad called "excuse me" where she does not, at all. looking good so far, basically.

The thing is though that until very recently, there wasn't a lot of music that was very definitely r&b rather than pop-qua-pop that was successful with crossover audiences but now it seems like nothing is splitting the difference. Why is that?

― ENBBQ (The Reverend), Tuesday, October 12, 2010 2:42 PM (1 hour ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

i think there's a couple different things going on. one is that R&B is kinda going through the same thing as rap, where crossover-by-design artists like BEP, Flo Rida, B.o.B., etc. are making huge hits mostly via pop radio, urban radio might play it some or not but it doesn't live or die by that. the Jason DeRulo/Iyaz/Jay Sean etc. types kind of fill the niche in pop/top 40 playlists that Chris Brown or Ne-Yo might've 2-4 years ago without getting any R&B play, and seem to be descended from Akon and Rihanna, who sometimes get their hits all over urban radio but not always. combine that with some of the bigger all-the-way-R&B hitmakers either not doing super well or crossing over that much with their latest projects (Mary J, R. Kelly, The-Dream, the aforementioned Chris Brown and Ne-Yo) and some of the Beyonce-level stars being between albums. maybe in a year this will all have reversed completely, maybe the trend will keep going in that direction, I dunno.

oh yeah, i heard half the jazmine sullivan album today.

Wasn't there suppose to be a Vanity 6 tribute on that album? That was talked about like a year ago in press during the early stages of the album.

This thread = Skillz' annual "Rap up" song, but for R&B. I feel totally caught up and have been spared sifting through a lot of garbage to find the gems.

Fantasia (and I'm really no Fantasia fan) and Monica (albeit retro/vintage Monica) were the pleasant surprises of the year IMO.

I was looking forward to Marsha Ambrosious (Floetry), but they pushed it back to Jan. 2011.

Apart from the occasional bright spots, the only thing I can stand these days is so-called Neo soul / grown folks R&B -- for lack of a better classification:

We’ll be releasing her album alongside the US on the 29th November, though just letting it become available no marketing or press push.

weird -- from my end, I'd have guessed Sullivan's new single would be a good fit with a lot of stuff that does well in the UK, especially with the way the vocal's treated

r|t|c, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 18:56 (thirteen years ago) link

idk, retro in the uk seems to have to be that particularly ersatz, ronsonised style to pass muster on radio, not the cratediggery collage of the jazmine. and black US artists all vanish into an unpromoted void of soft releases and minimal press in the UK unless they're a) well-established or b) "go pop" in a really obvious way (see discussion above), whether that's b.o.b. getting soft-serve beats and rock singers on his hooks or the grim hell that usher's career has descended into.

fantasia and monica albums not promoted one iota over here either.

As of right now, of the top 10 songs on the Hot 100, only "Bottoms Up" is a hit on the R&B chart. Six of those ten songs are by black performers. Eight are by minorities.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 21:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I feel like labels for the most part don't really understand this R&B chart schism. They keep pushing back albums by artists who have huge R&B hits that aren't crossing over, even though those artists' core audiences already have their appetites whetted.

the r&b contenders for my overall list would be:

erykah badu

k. michelle
quadron
the-dream
fantasia
corinne bailey rae
trey songz

it's a bit of a weird year in that, even though i've been actively disappointed by v little, nothing 's really leaped out and demanded the top spot. i've absolutely caned love king but i can't honestly give it album of the year status when i compare it to its predecessors.

still some to come - is the keri hilson album due this year? and ciara, obviously, who actually might well have made by album of the year.

I was also hoping for bigger & better R&B albums this year. I'm sure I missed some good stuff, but the Bilal album (and to a lesser extent the Badu album) were the only ones that sounded like revelations to me. Love King is great, but it pales to Love vs. Money, which is a desert-island album for me, and the new Trey Songz and Ne-Yo are nice but don't offer much new.

Jeremih's album is also a sleeper; totally delightful.

there's also a mj-esque disco number called "don't make me wait" where she actually sings with restraint and subtlety (!).

About two seconds into the first listen, I said "Oh shit" aloud and... sheeeeeeeeeeiiiit.

Interesting how this (produced by Carlos McKinney, btw) has the guitar wriggle from Aretha's "Jump to It," which isn't all that different from the one in Jazmine's mom's "Think Fast."

About two seconds into the first listen, I said "Oh shit" aloud and... sheeeeeeeeeeiiiit.

indeed - just got the album and this is def the standout. i hadn't clocked that the lyric was "i'll get my vanity 6 on" before!

jazmine album gets a definite thumbs up - the ne-yo duet is another highlight, funny and a bit meta, better than anything on the disappointing libra scale. "love you long time" also stood out. a couple of the tracks are a bit jazmine-by-numbers on one listen but this might change, and it's not like she's resting on her laurels all the time.

Just got the new Miguel album—apparently it has a release date of Nov. 30. Sounds and looks a little rushed and low-budget TBH, and it's really all over the place; lots of dumbed-down electro-pop and Kid Cudi-ish oddness, which is a shame since he's best over straight R&B/hip-hop beats. But at least his two songs with Salaam Remi are amazing, the two tracks with Dre & Vidal are alright, and this track "Teach Me" is wonderfully bizarre; reminds me a bit of an electrified Bilal/Prince hybrid. Still love this guy's voice and have cautious hope for future releases.

Jazmine's new album is A++ good on first listen. Maybe a better look for her than the first one, even if it's missing a real barn burner (although Holdin You Down might qualify). Less crazy experimentation and string sections and Daft Punk samples, but it's efficient and *joyful* in an unquantifiable sort of way.

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Monday, 6 December 2010 16:20 (thirteen years ago) link

I would think the issue with Keri Hilson would be more that without the over-the-top sexuality, she's really boring and unremarkable (which has its own raft of sociological implications/issues).

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Monday, 6 December 2010 16:30 (thirteen years ago) link

we discussed this in the slut-shaming thread already, but this move doesn't seem desperate or unseemly to me because of a) the boss-bitch businesswoman persona she's established quite effectively, b) the fact that she seems to be genuinely quite smart and on-it IRL (unlike eg ciara, who seems like a ditz, and rihanna, who's come off as dim in every interview except, weirdly, for the ones on domestic abuse).

(neither a nor b are mutually exclusive to being unremarkable - in fact they're prob the reasons she comes off as boring)

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Monday, 6 December 2010 16:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Right, the thing I'm getting at is the damned if you do/damned if you don't vortex that people often get stuck in; being rampantly sexual invites slut-shaming, but removing the rampant sexuality makes her anonymous and unremarkable, so exactly what are the avenues for success here?

It's part of the inherent problem with show business; competent makes you a songwriter, but crazy makes you a star.

It's part of the inherent problem with show business; competent makes you a songwriter, but crazy makes you a star.

yup that's keri hilson in a nutshell. but on he other hand, she's found a pretty decent level of success being competent, and that competency can probably ensure that she can knock out a "knock you down" or "turnin' me on" a couple of times per album. i mean, "the way you love me" is a competent enough generic banger. you need to have these second/third-tier artists around, really.

dayo, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 15:57 (thirteen years ago) link

lol, yes I know I am weird

It's more... they both were pushed by their labels as solo artists, Kelis got a moderate amt of success and Keri... didn't. Then both started popping up on the hooks of hip-hop singles, and then came back with more solo joints that were better accepted, only Kelis was more successful... and both definitely used hypersexuality as a hook.

So it's not really so much that they are the same type of artist as I see similar career trajectories, only Kelis is interesting and Keri is boring.

"Kiss Players♥" (DJP), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 15:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Keri's first album went gold and had two big top 20 hits and Kelis's debut didn't, and both did hooks on hit songs before properly launching their solo careers, so i don't really follow.

some dude, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean really Keri's first album sold about as well in 2009 as Kelis's biggest album did in 2003, which given the sales slump means she's been more successful overall, even if she's probably not as famous and definitely doesn't have a song entrenched in pop culture like "Milkshake"

some dude, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 16:08 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm in the un-vocal minority that thinks "Lay It Down" is kind of silly and overblown; though it's grown on me a bit since it's been receiving crazy radio play here for months. Still think "Don't Stop" is the much better 2010 Lloyd song.

Thanks for that article Andy K. I have only recently come to RnB after a year of listening to The Dream's discography. I've just been tapping the genre for its inherent beauty that has all but eluded me in prior years. I really like this article, it kind of gives validation to my love, because none of my friends want to move beyond The Dream, and some of these songs might sway them.

I wish I could convey the weight of my sudden infatuation with RnB. Like I would absolutely love to be in The Dream or Stargate's shoes, making radio hits and producing dope shit for pretty black girls and boys to sing.

Also, has Chris Brown's child-like voice been discussed? After listening to Deuces and Yo Excuse Me Miss, it sounds like he never lost the boyish effects in his voice. For example, on Deuces, he sings, "Better, better, better," with a soft, almost imperceptible 'L' at the end of the word, "Betterl"... Ha, maybe not, but does anyone else hear it? I feel like it's the main reason I keep coming back to him. I love it.

yeah great piece lex, props for that!

so many albums came out recently that I haven't gotten to really listen to seriously - jamie foxx, keyshia cole, keri (I did listen to this once and I liked the faux-reggae tune a lot)- plus catching up on stuff that I kind of slept on (bilal, jose james, k. michele mixtape, etc.) and Diddy, R. Kelly & Ciara's albums have been monopolizing my listening time - wish they wouldn't have all come out so late in the year. Love Letter reads to me like a pure exhibition of his talents - like, for those that have complained about his output over last few years/him not making "grown music" - he just tossed this album out to shut them up. He can do this kind of classicism in his sleep. The whole thing sounds effortless - I'm quite excited to hear Zodiac now.

overall, I think 2010 was a transition period for R&B - I don't think it was an amazing year, but there's definitely something interesting brewing

Tbh I probably cared less about r&b this year than any time in the past 5 years at least. Most stuff just wasn't doing it for me, at least not in large quantities. I listen to a bunch of the stuff you guys are gushing over and I'm just like ehhhhh.

no need to put any subjective qualifiers on that, think it's blatantly obvious that - usual suspects putting out the odd good record aside - r&b *as a genre* is in the abject doldrums right now and bears very little relevance to the world at large, never mind setting its trends

then again though i don't put washed-up cutesy slyphs on a creepy indie ice pedestal much less put their acapellas over ruff sqwad tribute productions six years after the fact, so maybe i'm just not enough of a r&b lover to hear the excellence all around idk

in my world of yung joc (The Reverend), Sunday, 26 December 2010 01:21 (thirteen years ago) link

well yeah, I agree that this wasn't a particularly great or even good year for R&B, but I think - as we've talked about in this thread a few months back - that the genre is getting a lot more removed from the pop charts and you're seeing a return to these sort of traditional, 90s R&B signifiers and aesthetics - Miguel & Jazmine are obvious examples there, but also Monica, even Ciara's "Ride" is very 90s R&B to me... I think this could end up producing some really great stuff. Plus there's a total lack of a bona fide R&B STAR right now (closest there is is Trey Songz? At this point Beyonce, Usher, et al have moved on to poppier pastures), so there's a huge vacuum there. Plus The-Dream, Ne-Yo, etc. are all kind of waning right now, so again there's the space for someone new to come in and shake things up... so mostly I'm just optimistic about where things are headed, though I can see why you'd say the genre is in the "abject doldrums"

the nutwasher (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 26 December 2010 01:24 (thirteen years ago) link

would you really argue though that those 90s signifiers you hear were any more prevalent in 2010 than in the last few years preceding? i mean miguel/ jazmine/even monica to a extent were just missy and salaam remi doing what they always do - the jazmine album was a wonderful articulation of it and one worth getting excited over but still kinda a fluke rather than a pointer to any future i think. likewise 'ride' you could also argue was a kinda micromanaged trick/terius pastiche vision along the lines of how they played mariah's last album; they did (or tried doing) the same for atl bass on that album too but you wouldnt say that was coming back either. (alas!)

i'm happy to be hopeful cos as you say there's an enormous vacuum and these things are perhaps cyclical anyway, but yeah.

One thing that has struck me about R&B in 2010 is a sense that the fan base (even the intelligent / perceptive / on-point sectors of it - and perhaps this is why it's notable) doesn't seem to know what it wants the music to do.

Defining things against perceived bad directions ("Time Of My Life", say) helps but then turns it into a rear-guard action, a fight to preserve a space for R&B rather than demand or even anticipate anything of it. Maybe that's the only fight we can have at this particular point.

Like, one thing (among many) that struck me about lex's piece is that he sets up all these competing archetypes of R&B which each have thrown up a great album or two this year - Sade vs Erykah vs The-Dream vs Trey Songz vs Fantasia vs Jazmine vs Ciara vs etc. And I love pretty much all of these albums. But all of them feel like signs of the persistence of existing archetypes (a relieving thing, don't get me wrong). Am I wrong in thinking that the non-newb R&B fan would have difficulty making a case for any of these as "the new thing"? (to the extent that there is a new thing it's the very guetta/bep dominance we resist)

"The new thing" is habitually overrated and I suspect this is (properly) an underlying thread in lex's piece anyway - but at the same time it's perhaps this very fragmentation that has allowed R&B to succumb so quickly to the guetta/bep sound.

Tim F, Sunday, 26 December 2010 03:50 (thirteen years ago) link

bears very little relevance to the world at large, never mind setting its trends

this was kind of the basis of my piece? it doesn't follow that it's in the doldrums right now though. tbh i might have been inclined to agree with you if you'd said that a few months ago - it's easy to set auteur types like sade/erykah/terius aside from the main thrust of the genre - but, y'know, lots of people came through in the last quarter.

i don't really hear a "new thing" or whatever - and i'm not arguing that any of these are pointers to the future. i'm not remotely confident that r&b will do any better, commercially or critically, in 2011 than it has done for the past few years (though i shall continue to shout at rock critics for being divs in this regard). as tim says my point is that those things are overrated and don't preclude excellence appearing all around.

the jazmine album was a wonderful articulation of it and one worth getting excited over but still kinda a fluke rather than a pointer to any future i think

most great r&b albums this year seemed like flukes. so what?

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 26 December 2010 09:36 (thirteen years ago) link

there basically isn't really any sort of narrative running through r&b, and if you take the macro view there's nothing to really latch on to, but when it came to submitted my p&j ballot i found i had MORE r&b albums in there than i normally would.

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 26 December 2010 09:37 (thirteen years ago) link

well yeah sure, mine would be the same. we are r&b fans after all.

obviously the issue of a "new thing" is a lot more nuanced than simply oppositionalizing cyborg auteur media shit vs organic 60s soul mom dinosaur stuff or whatever. as tim alludes to it's also to do with a healthy sense of self within a genre, and as it stands right now some old light from familiar stars don't make no constellation. like i wouldnt say dancehall broke any new ground this year but it was always in pretty rude bubbling conversation with itself - although i do realise this is something of an imperfect analogy.

should also make it clear also that i was originally only discussing future pointers in response to brainwasher's declaration and not using it as a stick to beat your bit. (though personally there's only so much "ciara returns to original values!" and "terius 'rewards his fans' with more of the same!" i can take it seems.)

come to think of it dancehall did also retreat to a awkward pseudo-90s after its period of giddy excess - i guess this is maybe what brainwasher was getting at in terms of r&b looking back, in order to redraw its own parameters and re-establish a collective consciousness or some sort. i still think this is a bit of a stretch however.

most great r&b albums this year seemed like flukes. so what?

― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 26 December 2010 09:36 (2 hours ago)

not sure if i follow - in fact i suspect i strongly disagree. like i didnt mean fluke in general terms of "oh hey a good album wow" but in the sense of jazmine's same previously boring aesthetic coming together so entertainingly. far as memory serves that's not really something i can attribute to any other album this year.

r|t|c, Sunday, 26 December 2010 12:17 (thirteen years ago) link

cannot overstate how key 'love you long time' on that jazmine album is - it may be far from the best song qua song on there but it comes at the precise moment when, just as your suspension of disbelief starts to flag and you begin to tire of the retro kiss-chase, the thing grabs you by the lapels like NO, REALLY REALLY THOUGH

r|t|c, Sunday, 26 December 2010 12:26 (thirteen years ago) link

it definitely defines the album for me more than any other song, i think. it's just so exultant.

it's also to do with a healthy sense of self within a genre, and as it stands right now some old light from familiar stars don't make no constellation

lack of constellation doesn't mean the stars shine less brightly. idk i think this desire for a big, overarching narrative is exactly the excuse that rock crits have been using to ignore the genre post-timba/neps, so my answer to this nebulous "lack of sense of self" is still "so what?" - r&b isn't as localised a scene as dancehall or uk funky or whatever, so i don't think it's as dependent on that to satisfy - looking at its protagonists as individuals can be as rewarding as looking at their positions within the whole play.

it's not JUST old light, either - certainly there was much i found unexpected, if not actually "innovative" in the monáe sense, in r&b this year.

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 26 December 2010 13:10 (thirteen years ago) link

I agree with you lex, but... rock critics being into R&B at the beginning of the decade doesn't change how great that era was. It's not like timbaland/neptunes/rodney jerkins/etc. was some kind of indie critic conspiracy foisted on r&b and hip hop from the outside. It was really people who always focused on R&B who invented that narrative (albeit not the IDM comparisons) and rock critics latched on belatedly.

If anything the current state of R&B criticism focusing on artists rather than scene-narratives encourages lots of people - not just eternally-damned rock crits but even otherwise decent people - to divide the genre into auteurs/stars and others, to pay attention to The-Dream and Rihanna and Ciara but disregard all the inspired one-off singles that always make up 60% of what's great about R&B.

I see some of this in myself: I find it a lot harder to motivate myself to keep up with Keri Hilson, say, than it was to do likewise with, say, Christina Milian a few years back. I'll keep being invested in R&B regardless, but I wouldn't say no to a greater sense of excitement amongst listeners (R&B listeners) about the music generally.

Tim F, Monday, 27 December 2010 07:54 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i do think prime timba/neps was a bit of a golden age obv, in terms of innovation as well - but there's no excuse for paid critics to drop the entire genre like they did when that ended.

i kind of feel that music across the board has gotten a lot more personality-driven, that you're a lot less likely to see random one-off singles (or if you do, they're because they flop and the trailed albums never emerge, eg richgirl). but idk, i don't really care about pandering to people's motivation - i think a lot of people expect hot r&b hitz to be delivered to them on a silver plate, and claim they have no time to go looking for them themselves, even as they go looking for music in all other genres. fuck 'em!

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 27 December 2010 08:29 (thirteen years ago) link

ummm lex don't fuck 'em, some of us work in jobs that aren't designed around hearing new r&b. hell, i'm currently working two jobs that aren't. i just don't have time to do anything other than read this thread and usually even then i get *months* behind on my bookmarks.

Love that record, esp. "All Matter".

As far as "Bottoms Up" & "O Let's Do It". They both share similar a rhythmic thrust and sonic palette.
