Its goes like this Obladee Oblada. Wassit called?

Seriously, the song goes "I can't eat I can't sleep anymore.... Since you walked out the door." Its sung by a female. I guess it's R&B. I can't remember very well. I just know the rhum tasted good.

Woop there it is. New answers.

"Wish I Didn't Miss You" by Angie Stone

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

as in:

"I can't eat, I can't sleep anymore
Waiting for love to walk through the door
I wish I didn't miss you anymore"

The video was all over MTV2 and VH1 about a month ago - not so sure about now though...

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's 'Whooomp!' not 'woop'

chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it could also be whoot

bc, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This song serves only to prove the brilliance of the O'Jays' "Backstabbers", from which the central riff is sampled.

Colin Meeder, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jazzanova used it this morning. Woohoo.

nathalie, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jazzanova - must be the most neglected band on this board ! I wish i could have been there...

OK so I went to this club yesterday where they played a lot of indie-friendly dance (DFA, etc.) and there was this song that sounded a bit like Orgy's version of "Blue Monday" (but a lot better). Basically a strong beat, heavily processed guitars with A LOT of pitch bending and no singing; maybe a remix. Also, I'm pretty sure it's recent (past 4 or 5 years max). Any guesses?

Right - there's a song in the background at 3:15 on this TV Cream podcast. http://www.tvcream.co.uk/?p=15059

I'm desperately trying to remember who or what it is and it's driving me insane - they cut out before any lyrics pop up to help, but it's a semi-well known synth number from the eighties.

Help much appreciated.

Isn't that Tarzan Boy by Baltimora?

I would love it if some could identify this song:

http://www.mediafire.com/?czzczzlzm2d

It's a really pretty/borderline-cheesy acoustic guitar piece. Instrumental so difficult to google!

Wax Cat, Sunday, 10 January 2010 20:00 (sixteen years ago)

ok this bit of a song has been in my head and its been driving me nuts for the last few days
John Peel probably played it loads, mid 80s lumpen indie in that Redskins, early Age Of Chance sort of way. late Clash influenced?
the only bit i can remember goes "OOH! AH! A Riba-Riba-Riby! OOH! AH! A Rib Rib Ey!"
suspect it was complete bollocks

zappi, Sunday, 10 January 2010 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

the easier way to identify a song is to ask your friend who has shazam in his/her cell phone.

ha, already tried that to no avail sadly...

right vintage, but not that song. lol psychobilly though!

zappi, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 14:48 (sixteen years ago)

Red Box, "For America" ?

Mark G, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 14:53 (sixteen years ago)

yikes no! definitely early/mid 80s uk band, that bit i remember is loads of blokes chanting over & over "OOH! AH! A Riba-Riba-Riby! OOH! AH! A Rib Rib Ey!". maybe sounds a bit like late Clash, slightly clumsy indie funk to it? dread think now what it turns out to be!

zappi, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 15:03 (sixteen years ago)

God dammit, now you've got ME doing it! I know the chant you mean, but can't place it at all. Thought it might have been Blue Rondo A La Turk's "Klactoveesedstein", but a quick YouTube tells me I'm wrong.

Aaargh. This is going to torture me for the rest of today.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 16:44 (sixteen years ago)

It's some sort of Shriekback/Pigbag/Rip Rig & Panic/Maximum Joy punk-funk/disco-not-disco thing, isn't it?

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

that sounds about right, i was thinking a more boisterous Higsons

zappi, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 16:59 (sixteen years ago)

Hoo, hah, it IS The Higsons! "I Don't Want To Live With Monkeys", yes?

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

(The weird thing was, I kept thinking: "Norwich. It's a band from Norwich.")

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

wow! i don't remember them sounding that punky!

zappi, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 17:04 (sixteen years ago)

Although "Monkeys" actually goes: "HOO! HAH! a-dibby-dibby-dibbaay, HOO! HAH! a-dib dib doh..."

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

well, considering the last time i probably heard it was on the John Peel whingding when i was 12, i think i did ok :p

zappi, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 17:09 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, absolutely... I was just checking that we meant the same song. There was a lot of that sort of stuff about! A major Peel favourite, that one.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 17:14 (sixteen years ago)

its sounds surprisingly good! i was expecting it to turn out to be Guana Batz or something.

one year passes...

Ok, this one might be tricky... I've heard it many times over the years but it's always at bars and I never get the chance to decodify the lyrics. It's got some sort of funky reggae shuffle similar to 'feel like jumping' by Marcia Griffiths and the only part of the lyrics I remember is a very generic 'that what I say / said' that I think gets repeated several times on the chorus. Please help.

Moka, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

"54-46 Was My Number"?

ford lopatin (dog latin), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

Yep that's the one. I now realize I've had it on my collection for years and blanked out completely on that one. Thanks.

Moka, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

holy crap! good job getting the song from just that description.

m0stlyClean, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 03:20 (fifteen years ago)

Here's another one.
It's a gospel house track, or maybe just straight gospel.
There are children singing.
The lyrics include: "We don't know where, we don't know when" and the choir goes: "That's how the good lord works, that's how he works".
It is funky as fuck.

m0stlyClean, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 03:22 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty sure that's "Stand on the Word". The piano intro is great on that song, at least the one with Larry Levan and the Celestial Choir, which is the only version I've heard.

Iris, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 04:03 (fifteen years ago)

I used to mix 'feel like jumping' in with '54-46' when I dj'd reggae nights. The two are kind of inseparable now to me, although I'm surprised moka knew the former better than the latter.

I once asked a question like this that went something like 'what's thus Jamaican rocksteady song that goes 'sandy sandy'? Turned out it was actually 'Dandy' by the Kinks which I'd reimagined as reggae.

ford lopatin (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 07:55 (fifteen years ago)

― ford lopatin (dog latin)

Hahaha you used to mix those two for real? wow! I just thought of it as a random reference that could fit with what I was trying to say... little did I know it was going to be spot on for you to guess the song I was looking for. I think we are meant for each other dog latin.

Moka, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 09:30 (fifteen years ago)

Yes it's a little freaky because I remember that segue being the opening of a well-received mix CD I made back in 2003.

Okay can somebody tell me if this is a Japanese version of a well known song, and if so, what song it actually is. I'm sure I've heard an english version of it before, maybe by The Nits.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 11:31 (fifteen years ago)

Ha no it's not but it was a #1 hit in the American charts on 1963 and stayed there for 3 weeks.
Kyu Sakamoto – “Sukiyaki”

Moka, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 11:36 (fifteen years ago)

So, yes. It was a well known song in America but surprisingly it hitted the charts its original language (a case similar to Volare). Wouldn't be surprised if there was an english cover version but the actual hit was the japanese version.

Moka, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 11:38 (fifteen years ago)

Wikipedia:

Well-known English-language cover versions include a 1981 cover under the title "Sukiyaki" by A Taste of Honey and a 1995 cover by 4 P.M.. There is also an English language version with altogether different lyrics by Jewel Akens under the title "My First Lonely Night" recorded much earlier in 1966. There are many other language versions of the song as well.

Love a bit of Kyu Sakamoto.

I don't think I have the tracklisting anywhere Moka, but it was mostly highlights from various Trojan and Soul Jazz comps. I might make a new reggae mix soon though as it's been ages since I did a proper one.

ford lopatin (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

Maresnest: Wow! That's so close it's almost a rip-off. I like this song, actually... not sure if I'd ever be able to hear it without thinking of Kyu Sakamoto tho.

Dog latin: for shame, judging by the strong opening pair it sounded like my kind of playlist. Please give me a heads up when you ever make a new mix.

Craiger Lazer (Craigo Boingo), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 22:55 (fifteen years ago)

I've got one I've been trying to track down for years. Sounds like an early 80s DIY electronic / industrial / minimal 4-track recording. Drum machine, descending bassline, bell sound melody, London-ish working-class-ish voice with lyrics something like:

Are my feelings in the way, it's a weird thing to say
Do you miss me when I'm away
I just wanna play
And it's easier, just to leave yer
Every other day
Do you feel the same way
I wanna ---------- some Milk Tray

I can stick up a rip if it helps.

Not Skunk Anansie. I was thinking Sade for a minute because I remember the singer/band was a simple name like "cher" or "sade"...actually not sure if she has her head shaved in the video... I just kind of remember her that way... I'm thinking late 90s. It's bugging me off but my memory about it is very blurry. Can't really remember lyrics (...it might say something like 'my baby is gone' somewhere in there)... male singer possibly from french origin (sounded to me like he had a french accent but I could be wrong.

Mmm for reference I recorded the main riff. Granted I'm not a guitar player and the sound is too low but here you go. So just try to imagine the riff being played by piano and strings.

Here's another one:

Trance song from early 00's. Was sort of popular and it had a synth very similar to the main melody in ATB's "9PM (til I come)". Rhythm-wise it was similar to Shock Bukara's 'Play something smooth' sort of latin influenced. There's a vocal part where a sexy sort of hindi voice keeps repeating 'in your eyes... eyes' or something along the lines... (those might not be the actual lyrics, I could have heard wrong).

I think this is from the late 90s, BUT it could be 80s...or even early 2000s This is a song heard in a store over their music system in 2000-2002. They used the Westwood One service.

Urban sounding song with a strong beat. Mostly instrumental....except for a few times where a guy speaks a few lines. Sketchy memory, but I remember him saying "North South East West"...although it could have been in a different order. And I think he says "Let's go get Sally"....but that could be totally wrong!

This song is driven by a piano riff (repeating over and over). Strong drums....almost hip-hop-ish drums...BUT NOT REALLY. Kinda funky, but really more urban. When the guy speaks, it is done in that compressed sound....like you're hearing him over the telephone.....know what I mean? And it's spoken in cadence: "North South East West....da da Da da DA da DA...."

I have included a dropbox link to an mp3 of me trying to play the melody on a piano. I am not a musician and do not have perfect pitch. The song could be in a different key or I could be a little off. I am not musical at all. But this is the general melody and the cadence of the riff.

Been looking for this one since 2002. I will be forever indebted to anyone who can help with this! This is my last "holy grail".

two years pass...

This is driving me crazy because I hear this song every 3 months (when I hadn't heard it in years) and I keep meaning to take note of the lyrics.
Female singer, has the same vibe as Living in the City but more uptempo, more staccato/lilting vocals. I think some of the lyrics are about "down in LA" and maybe about naming other locations, cities?

Yerac, Thursday, 5 July 2018 09:17 (seven years ago)

stupid answer but it's not Sheryl Crow's "All I Wanna Do" is it?

Neymar, Mr Nice Guy (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 July 2018 09:26 (seven years ago)

either way i'm going to listen to Sheryl Crow for a bit

No. Higher voice, it's definitely a more city vibe like the Stevie Wonder ref above. I can't remember if there are horns in it because I keep melding the two songs in my mind. I think almost every line ends in a long A (for the rhymes).

Yerac, Thursday, 5 July 2018 09:41 (seven years ago)

Voice is more Vanity, less Sheryl Crow.

Neymar, Mr Nice Guy (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 July 2018 09:48 (seven years ago)

No, more uptempo, funky. I was looking up LA songs too. I think Chicago is mentioned. I literally hear this song every time I am drunk and I start shouting "I can't believe you've never heard this song" to my spouse. It has a late 70s, early 80s vibe but I want to say it's a lot newer than that.

Yerac, Thursday, 5 July 2018 10:00 (seven years ago)

I am looking up old Janelle Monae songs now, but I think her voice isn't high enough.

Yerac, Thursday, 5 July 2018 10:03 (seven years ago)

I want to also say it's urban jazzy?

Yerac, Thursday, 5 July 2018 10:11 (seven years ago)

OMG, I just found it. And this entire time in my head I was thinking "this better not be a fucking Kanye song."

Yerac, Thursday, 5 July 2018 10:30 (seven years ago)

It's Estelle, American Boy (2009). I was in a music blackout from 2008 to about 2012 so this makes sense.

Yerac, Thursday, 5 July 2018 10:37 (seven years ago)

hah! i knew it was rattling around in my head somewhere and I had a feeling I heard that phrase several times a day. Turns out they play it all the time at the station where I work

Gâteau Superstar (dog latin), Thursday, 5 July 2018 10:51 (seven years ago)

lol i love "American Boy"

Neymar, Mr Nice Guy (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 July 2018 10:56 (seven years ago)

I somehow managed to block out that Kanya raps and that she says American Boy in it. I've been hearing it everywhere this year.

Track played on 6 music just over a week ago, so sadly not on their webpages. Dance track which features a spoken interlude by a Northern (?) female about how she'd play music and her dad would tell her to turn it down.

This is probably a dead-end but I was at a stoned gathering, sometime in the mid-late 90s (98, if I had to guess). Folk were playing various tapes and I heard a Massive Attack remix that, in my memory, went on for what felt like 10+ minutes and gradually built to a glorious wall of noise. It might have been a remix of Weather Storm, but I've listened to Mad Professor remixes but nothing has matched. Am I just stonedly remembering the wrong thing?

It’s not! I saw that somebody else asked this some years ago on Reddit, and that was the answer given there, but no.

I thought maybe bouncing souls or good clean fun—almost definitely a mid-Atlantic band of that era—but I’ve come up completely empty.

dc, Monday, 24 May 2021 12:34 (five years ago)

The teenage bottlerocket song references the same scene in top gun, but there was a song that actually sampled the dialogue from the movie.

This is such a monkey on my back lol.

this pop hit from the 80s or 90s, with synths, verse lyrics entirely spoken in a low baritone, I don't remember hardly any words other than I think the dude talks about 'magic' at one point, and the chorus just seems to be harmonized AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH-AHHHHHHH, followed by something that sounds like 'doot doo' or maybe a synth sound that sounds like that (and no it's not Freur - "Doot Doot").

real warm grandpa (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 31 October 2023 15:18 (two years ago)

the 'doot doo' sounds kinda like what the ringer sounds like in the UK, kinda,

koogs, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 15:59 (two years ago)

um, that's a lot less synthy than i remember it being. it does have bridge in the middle which is spoken / phone ringing sound but i think that's about it

koogs, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 16:03 (two years ago)

Not Magic by Mick Smiley, from the Ghostbusters soundtrack?

MaresNest, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 16:25 (two years ago)

sadly neither match.

to describe it better, it's a midtempo song, and the verse is pretty entire entirely spoken in a nasally baritone, he sounds like he's trying to sound seductive or suave. then it segues into a harmony of what sounds like female vocals going AHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHH, descending.

after it repeats a few times what sounds like female vocals singing "doot doo" or "choo choo" or something or other happens.

idk I'll never figure this out and it's probably a really easy to identify song that I've somehow forgotten lol.

Looking for a dance track with a vocal which is more spoken than sung which has line “the roof is blocking the view to the stars”.

Voice sounds Mancunian.

this is the thread i have bookmarked for this kind of question so let's try it!
this melody has been rattling around in my head for a week. can't tell you the decade, the genre, the instrument... i'm quite sure it's NOT a guitar tho, if that helps. (link to some music sequencer website)

anyone have any idea? i think someome might sing along w/ it at some point but i more remember it as an intrumental part. losing my mind. it is probably something so obvious.

Dan Worsley, Tuesday, 11 March 2025 12:20 (one year ago)

who that person is though, is a bit of a mystery. not much useful information on the net and the song doesn't seem to exist outside of that tv production

Clock DVLA (NickB), Tuesday, 11 March 2025 13:31 (one year ago)

I've asked this question a few times now and got nowhere. I'm pretty sure the track is called either "Part Of The Machine" or "Heart Of The Machine". I remember listening to it c2004 or 2005, and it's got a fairly fast 4/4 techno/electro crossover sound that does a speed up towards the end.

The lyrics are sung in a dispassionate neutral Southern English accent and repeat lines similar to:

I'm a screw, I'm a cog, I'm a wheel
I'm the part that makes you feel
I'm the sound that's in between
I'm the heart of the machine

Those lyrics are only from memory, so probably not right.
