Here's hoping it's a throwback to the Cryptograms stuff, I didn't really care for the last album.

i'm bout it bout it but no way am i doing street teaming for them

am0n, Friday, 9 July 2010 22:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I loved both Cryptograms and Microcastle (and the bonus disc of outtakes) ((and most of the Atlas Sound stuff I've heard)) (((and heck, even the first Deerhunter album wasn't half-bad!)))... so I'm pretty sure I'll like this no matter what.

stuff that's what it is (bernard snowy), Friday, 9 July 2010 22:39 (thirteen years ago) link

i still kinda think the flourescent grey ep was the best thing they did

ilxor completely off the money itt, sorry dude

and as far as full lengths go, I'm pretty sure I've listened to the Atlas Sound LPs more than the Deerhunter ones.

man really? i never gave that last EP much of a chance i guess. really loved microcastle tho, so looking forward to this

You mean the Rainwater Cassette Exchange EP thing? I kinda forgot about that, I thought it was relatively weak at the time, I guess I should revisit it.

1967 Dragnet episode (Z S), Saturday, 10 July 2010 04:40 (thirteen years ago) link

All the build up to Microcastle, and the overexposure to the band around that time made that album feel really overly fussed over. Their insistence to put the "suite" in the middle of the album, the Black Lips babble in the one song, and a general vibe I get with the sequencing and composition of the rest of the songs is just: over-thought. I actually like it, but the much more quickly assembled Weird Era I feel is much better because it doesn't sound so slaved over, where they jammed out all of their great ideas instead of drew out a blueprint beforehand. Just how it sounds to me...

Evan, Saturday, 10 July 2010 04:48 (thirteen years ago) link

This is the part where I spent time to write a post that I thought a lot about to join in a conversation about music, and the thread dies until someone responds to something written above me. 67% chance. :D:D:D:D:D:D

Evan, Saturday, 10 July 2010 05:21 (thirteen years ago) link

HAHA Fuck it.

Evan, Saturday, 10 July 2010 14:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Weird Era's still my favorite! It's like the Deerhunter version of The White Album.

Beach Pomade (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 10 July 2010 14:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Don't feel bad dude, on a friday night your chances of a response are pretty low anyway, unless you're on the I'm Drunk thread!

fwiw, I pretty much agree with you, although the hype thing didn't really bug me because I'm not too plugged into the whole music blogosphere thing anymore.

1967 Dragnet episode (Z S), Saturday, 10 July 2010 15:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I guess I got there just when people finished last night!

The hype doesn't bug me as much as how its huge anticipation seemed to force the band to be a bit more rigid in their creative process (not because they focused on "songs" more but the way they went about them), creating an overly thought and careful album.

Evan, Saturday, 10 July 2010 15:15 (thirteen years ago) link

i still kinda think the flourescent grey ep was the best thing they did

did not even realize that was supposed to be a suite on microcastle.. what tracks are included in this?

p.s. little kids mightve been my most listened to track of 08

# "Microcastle" - 3:40
# "Calvary Scars" - 1:37
# "Green Jacket" - 2:09
# "Activa" - 1:49

That's the suite iirc?

ksh, Saturday, 10 July 2010 17:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Whatever happened to Whitney, btw? :-(

k3vin k., Saturday, 10 July 2010 19:06 (thirteen years ago) link

a bunch of microcastle is really boring

call all destroyer, Saturday, 10 July 2010 19:09 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't the title track is included in the suite.

scarfs, Saturday, 10 July 2010 19:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Believe, that is.

scarfs, Saturday, 10 July 2010 19:55 (thirteen years ago) link

i had no idea there was a suite

thomp, Saturday, 10 July 2010 20:33 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't think they're 'boring' but they're very textural: i mean, i've been meaning to listen to them again, and now i'm listening to them again, and i guess i've not listened to microcastle/weird era more than, say, ten times, but i really know very little of it; i sort of vaguely place the odd guitar line or sound effect or whatever; i know there's a jammy/twinkly bit coming at the end of weird era cont.; i can sort of vaguely place hooks for one or two songs if i look at the titles, but i will think that three or four tracks are 'nothing ever happened' before i actually get to 'nothing ever happened'

thomp, Saturday, 10 July 2010 20:35 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't know what part of the record it is, but the really slow stuff that sounds like ballads from the 50s is rough

call all destroyer, Saturday, 10 July 2010 20:43 (thirteen years ago) link

i really liked his last album, it was good stuff. i'm looking forward to some new stuff.

Z S, are those the eyes of a positive or negative reaction?

SourPatchCorpse, Thursday, 16 September 2010 00:09 (thirteen years ago) link

for the first song, extreme positive reaction. I just finished the album, and overall I enjoyed it more on first listen than Microcastle (which I ended up loving after a several plays - it usually takes me a few). I had already heard Helicoptor and Revival, which would have been two standouts, so the reaction was a little more muted than it would have been otherwise.

But man, that first song ("Earthquake") is outstanding!! I can't even really wager a guess on whether or not it would appeal to fans of deerhunter/atlas sound's older stuff, but it tickles my fancy in all the right spots, kinda reminds me of MBV in a way that isn't overly derivative, just awesome.

Z S, Thursday, 16 September 2010 00:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, Earthquake is not only a great tune, but an excellent opening to the record.

SourPatchCorpse, Thursday, 16 September 2010 00:33 (thirteen years ago) link

"desire lines" is a perfect encapsulation of what deerhunter does well. the break at the 3 minute mark and those lyrical guitar lines that elevate ever so smoothly...

many people listen to the live feed? bits of it were quite good but i kept logging off then going back an hour later to see it was still going. 4 and a half hours in the end.

he mentioned Ben Allen's son doing the recording of one of the songs onto tape. I'm pretty sure he said it was 'Memory Boy' which is pretty damn good for a 16 year olds first professional recording.

du mein bestie (micarl), Friday, 17 September 2010 09:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Revival is a wonderful two and a bit minutes of psyche-pop perfection and after a couple of listens my impression is that Halcyon Digest is another fantastic Deerhunter album that will be on the walkman for a long time. Microcastle was a bit of a flawed gem but that is what I like about the Deerhunter/Atlas Sound albums, they are always seem a bit uneven but contain moments of startling brilliance that probably wouldn't happen if they didn't continually push on with every release as they have done so far.

one thing about the flood of legally available new music these days is that it kills the attention span. september 14 was a huge day for new releases, some of which were pretty interesting, but with deerhunter's new disc (and no age's, salem's, and so on) on the immediate horizon, i can't find time for the "old" new releases.

anyway, thanks for the stream link.

Deerhunter is a band I wish I liked more... everything about their sound lines up with everything I like - maybe too neatly, and maybe that's the problem. Like it's so in my wheelhouse that it's boring and predictable. I don't know. But this album feels just okay - not as good as the last one, which I liked but was never over the moon for.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Monday, 20 September 2010 18:45 (thirteen years ago) link

part of the key for me with this band is how brutally direct they are with their lyrics, e.g., Agoraphobia and Fluorescent Grey.

I think it works very well with the scruffier/more raw sounding songs like Memory Boy being shorter and scattered between the very clean and very good songs. Too many killer tracks on an album can sometimes be a bad thing.

I'm enjoying this album more than i did Microcastle to begin with and much more than Cryptograms.

much more likable than that horrible Atlas Sound record and the filler is enjoyable. It frames the good stuff and makes those tracks sound better though the overall listening experience is obviously hurt.

Harumph! There are some reet cloth eared cunts on this thread. Deerhunter dont overwork the life out of their songs and create albums that offer a bit more than just lucid and predictable rock nusic. If you like them they affect you in a sensory and emotional way . There is no point expecting 11 traditional killer rock tunes expertly sequenced to cater to the average bedroom music fans wet dream ideal of a perfect album with Deerhunter. If you want dross like that get some plodding mediocrity like The Hold Steady - never a more aptly monikered band whose entire output could be reduced to a mere grain of fucking rice, never mind an EP.

"Deerhunter dont overwork the life out of their songs"

Kind of felt like Microcastle was too over thought and careful. Weird Era wasn't because of how quick they threw it together, and it felt more natural overall, which I've said elsewhere.

mizzell, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 14:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Much thicker than Microcastle, thicker textures, crunchy guitars, a little banjo, lots of additional percussion. Really love the production on this. Very wide-screen. You can tell playing all those open air festivals has influenced these songs, both in scope and sound.

It's going to be hard to knock Microcastle (and especially) Weird Era from my top of the list because that double record is like Deerhunter's White Album. But "Don't Cry", "Memory Boy", and "Basement Scene" really capture that 60s girl group inspired ambient punk feeling with some really wonderful songs that are some of the best the group has done.

Keep in mind when i say '60s girl group inspired ambient punk' i don't mean the superficial affectations that get taken up by every indie band in existence these days ("Be My Baby" drum beat, anyone?). It has more to do with songcraft for Deerhunter: the nostalgic melodies, the stomping beats, the chord structures.

"Coronado" is Bradford living out his Strokes dreams to great swaggering effect! And yes the last track is really awe-inspiring. Another great record from probably my favorite band of the 21st century.

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 16:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Deerhunter (for me) have this weird thing where it takes like a year or two for me to really grasp/dig whatever album EP is in question - like, Microcastle/Weird Era didn't start making real intuitive sense until just recently.

I played bass in a live LP lineup almost a year ago and we learned 10 or so songs, two of which were Desire Lines and Fountain Stairs, and the rest of them were on that level and some of them even better. I put "Fluorescent Grey" on a Top 10 a few years ago, but with a little nudge from Christgau, I'm just getting around to this album and the new one now. I'll need more time with Monomania, but Halcyon Digest I love immediately. Especially the last three songs--even looked up the lyrics for "He Would Have Laughed," something I never do. Certain lines seemed a little too close to home...but I guess he's writing about some invented character, not himself.
