It's worth remembering that Rollins is a) a socially awkward nerd (I've met him and interviewed him twice in person and twice by phone) and b) a guy people used to stub out cigarettes on, throw things at and start fights with during Black Flag sets, so the idea that he might be a little more guarded, and might perceive slights more quickly, than your average person isn't totally surprising to me.

i don't know if i'd classify a guy who does spoken word, is a talking head on just about everything, had his own interview show, etc. as a genuinely socially awkward nerd. also re: Blak Flag, it's not like he was being picked on or anything. BF and Rollins had a certain reputation and he played to it.

Really the only reasonable person here is the lady hanging with Henry. The Cakeshop women were off camera, so their claim of just wanting to hang out seems a little bogus. They acted out and pretty much asked for H. to confront them. Fairly easy to imagine that they knew he may be an easy mark.

As far as them being into his music and thus on his side (and undeserved of the "Rollins treatment"), it's hard to imagine many people saying on camera "Black Flag sucked" or some such thing. A general bad showing all around.

Those hipsters were probably just in the shop anyway, they see Rollins and they wanna talk to him. It's not like they were being explicitly elitist as Rollins had warned. They didn't 'act out', they didn't seem to have bad intentions and when Rollins comes over to greet them he is the one who looks like 'a total paranoid, egomaniacal shithead'.

Not defending Henry, just saying that there is blame to go around. There are ways to decide to talk to someone that do not involve yelling things from off camera is all I'm saying. Of course Rollins was a pud about it, totally. What I am suggesting is that, just maybe, they knew he would be.

I think I sort of understand what mentality he was trying to complain about but Whiney summed it up in the second post like 10x better than Rollins did, plus his whole preemptive strike freakout was just insecure and weird.

I mean I think there are a lot of young people who would have a slightly condescending take on any music of the past that seems directly, sincerely confrontational and/or political -- enjoying it on some level while being above it and above everything else. But I feel like Rollins doesn't even fully get how that operates and just has this "WHY YOU MAKIN FUN OF ME!" attitude -- pretty undignified and immature for a man his age.

I know how he comes off here, but I think in his way he was being self-conscious and trying to make fun of himself, even though he's all up in their faces. He's never, ever been good with adulation, he prefers confrontation...so even though they're being cool to him, he turns it into something he is defending himself from. It comes off as douchey, I can't exactly defend it but I've been a fan for a long time...Hank kind of defines secondhand embarrassment in social situations, imo

Henry Rollins comes off as unnecesarily aggressive and prickish. The hipsters were trying to be cool but never said anything particulary douche-y imho, au contraire they were trying to be nice to him.

I couldn't hear the name of the artists and records he thinks are 'hip'. Any help please?

Moka, Thursday, 4 November 2010 02:09 (thirteen years ago) link

don't think he's being prickish really. he's overly sensitive and he misreads the situation and acts awkwardly, but totally in the best of intentions. like, he thinks theyre making fun of him for being an old man, but really they just think wanna take advantage of the situation and score some hipster cred

atm this is the top comment on reddit and I'd say I agree:

I think this is a perfect example of someone expecting something to happen and in effect making it happen. He interpreted what the girl said to fit his expectation then went off on a diatribe that he was expecting to give. It didn't matter what the girl said or what anyone else said, the same thing would have happened because his expectation manufactured it. He has been doing this his entire life, if you watch any of his interviews you see him doing the exact same thing over and over again.

I'm just amazed at how much Rollins projects his own punkdom on everyone else. It's sort of self-involved! He's being all self-conscious and self-deprecating about being older -- as if he assumes he must be an issue to younger people, or controversial, or perceived as a "sellout." Whereas for most people who go to Cakeshop he's surely just "that guy that was in that beloved old punk band and was painted red on MTV when I was a child and talks a lot." It takes a weird ego for him to even worry that he's seen as "old and in the way." It'd be like Betty White worrying that young people resent and are gunning for her. (And I don't mean that as an insult about getting older -- it's just, like, a point comes where you're just some fixture in the world and nobody's that worked up about it.)

I have someplace, the audiobook version of "Get in the van"

It ends with 5 50 mins of self and everyone else loathing "Someone gives me a book, I throw it into the trash" moanmoanmoan, then he postscripts it with a "things are different thesedays, but hey these kids now are missing out on a lot of fun"

Mark G, Thursday, 4 November 2010 14:44 (thirteen years ago) link

the best part about get in the van is "The Shed" where henry goes to stare into the darkness and cut himself with broken mirrors and eat coffee grounds and write in his journal.

being in "The Shed" is heavy.

actually all of get in the van rules....October 3rd...outside of Phoenix...why do these punks have to fuck with us? Who do they think I am? What do they think I can tell them? Do they think I care about their lives?

Today, I realized I belong only to myself...I can't even talk to Greg anymore...I ride in the back of the truck with the gear and stare at the ceiling....Before the show in Phoenix some skinhead threw a cup of piss on me. He got knifed by a Mexican bouncer. I didn't care. Fuck him.

I don't even know how long I've been out here. I don't even know what to do when we get off tour. I have no one. Only me.

You know how older Americans get absurdly aggrieved at the idea that they’ve done something racially insensitive — as if this is the most profound and dehumanizing suggestion that can ever be made about a person? A lot of younger urbanites are reaching this point with the phrase “trust fund.”

not sure about this - I mean it might well be true, I don't live in the US, but one of these things is open to interpretation and the other is something you basically either do or don't have. So I feel like it's pretty reasonable for ppl to find it lame and tiresome that it's passed/passing into the lexicon of 'generic insult available to level at total strangers'

imo a lot of the people flinging the term "trust fund" around would be at a loss to really tell you what a trust fund is or how one works - the point of the term is to accuse somebody of being rich. which I think is why some people who're perceived as rich get pissed -- they're like "I don't actually know what a trust fund is and you're calling me a 'trust fund kid,' fuck, I'll bet you don't actually know what one is, either, you poseur, fuck you" & this applies to Rollins - five bucks says his def. of "trust fund" wouldn't go very far in explaining how the word "trust" works there

but the accusation is 1/2 you are the bourgeois enemy and 1/2 you didn't earn your life it was given to you

Suddenly the person who called Rollins “paranoid” about how he’s perceived is scrambling to assert that she doesn’t have nearly as much money as he does and respects Neshat “a whole lot.” In a few short moves, Rollins has turned things around: Instead of justifying himself to the young people, they’re justifying themselves to him.

TBF, Rollins actually made an assumption (if not an accusation) about the young woman that she was responding to. She wasn't just freaking out because someone shouted her name or yelled "Sexual Aids!" Not quite the same level of paranoia.

For the first time, Los Angeles public radio station KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) will shine a spotlight on our most well-known DJ Henry Rollins, in a one-of-a-kind live event.

On Thursday, December 9 at 8pm, KCRW will present an exclusive listening party at the Echoplex which will serve as a benefit for the station. Rollins has been searching his musical vaults and will come armed with top selections from his personal music collection – some of which have never been heard before -- to share with fans. In a living room-style setting, anecdotes in tow, he’ll share a night of unforgettable tunes and stories.

“I will play stuff that I am unable to on my regular show, due to the rare nature of the material. I have been planning the set for weeks and am so excited to be able to get some truly unique tracks to your ears,” said Rollins. “Basically, the Echoplex will be my living room, you are the guests and I am playing some of my coolest cuts from decades of gathering, complete with the story around the track and its acquisition.”

Looking at Rollins' "they think I'm old and bourgeoisie, while they're avant-garde proletariat" remark, it makes his later introduction of Shirin Neshat "as an exiled Iranian photographer" as some sort of gross trump card, like dating her qualifies as a great piece of outsider art that they can't equal.

Cunga, Thursday, 11 November 2010 23:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Years and years ago there was a rumor that Rollins had recorded a version of "You Don't Have To Be A Star, Baby (To Be In My Show)" with Mary J. Blige. I always kinda hoped it was true.

Would love to see Rollins do a Curb or Louie cameo, but the director would have to keep him in the dark about the scene's situation until the cameras rolled.

The dude is totally untouchable for his Infinite Zero re-releases (OOP Trouble Funk albums, the Iceberg Slim spoken word LPs on CD, etc. etc. etc.). I heard he supposedly stores the archives of tons and tons of Dischord stuff, too - master tapes and unreleased albums and stuff - in his vaults.

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 12 November 2010 01:30 (thirteen years ago) link

BTW if that's correct upthread that this was shot in 2006, dude's diaries reveal that he was massively, massively, clinically depressed at the time; very unhappy with some then-current career decisions and unable (due to his pathology) to communicate his discomfort to his co-workers; bottling up resentment and getting angry at the situation, instead of attempting to solve it; and that by early the next year he was much healthier, and consciously aware of what a state he'd been in during the previous year (and relieved at the difference now he was out of it).

Know The (ledge) (sic), Friday, 12 November 2010 01:48 (thirteen years ago) link

It's certainly good to hear that this doesn't reflect his current mental state. I had a good year or two idolizing the spoken word and would like to think he's at heart a cool guy.

I liked "Think Tank" a lot, it did sort of end in a "Here's some hilarious stuff I wrote to someone.." but the rest was all good.

Mark G, Friday, 12 November 2010 09:21 (thirteen years ago) link

TBH I *like* Rollins because at heart he's the nerd-made-good, revenge fantasies and all that, but you know he's still human and unsure. I've seen him do standup a couple times in past years and he did this one where he went ON AND ON about turning 40 and how horrible it was and blah blah but then he segued into this awesome story about going to a KISS concert and how adorable and awesome KISS fans are which kind of redeemed his "wah I am an old fake" rant.

I DNGI why he is so obsessed with this "people dismiss me cos Im an old has been" thing. Why does he think this? He's the arbiter of true hardcore! He was the singer of Black Flag FFS. What is the matter with him?!

Wow, that 1984 clip brings back all my mixed feelings about Black Flag at the time.

I will say this: Not all social behavior on the other side of decent is equally bad, and that kind of confrontational narcissism is both very '84 punk and very sociable in its stunted way--the idea of putting it all out there (including prejudices), making people defend themselves, snapping them out of politeness, challenging received thinking, etc. If there are less healthy impulses mixed in (aggressiveness, asking questions so loaded you couldn't possibly want an answer), that only shows the risks of living too long on the other side.

The reason the kid isn't too shocked is he's used it. (Even Henry touching his hair is very slam-pit, somewhere between tenderness and a prelude to a fight.) He runs the interview in that same play-acting way until the tables get turned, and obviously doesn't know what to make of Kira, who's unacculturated enough to think she's being interviewed. And as if to confirm Henry's paranoia, he invokes the common, automated critique of Black Flag at the time--that they were playing "heavy metal," "selling out," not playing "TV Party" etc.

So I don't see a bully and a kid, I see a bunch of kids trying to figure out who they are in a radical situation. And there's a bit of punk culture-clash in the New York footage too, where, what, these women are surprised Henry Rollins is baiting them with whatever demons lurk in his head rather than asking them questions and getting to know them after they yell, "Get in the van!"?

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 20 December 2010 14:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I should say, punk was the first time I became aware of people using quotation marks around everything--speech, clothes, the tiniest behaviors. It was a pointed irony expressed at the expense of all kinds of conventions that truly needed tearing down--and I still see kids deconstructing things as they say them in the same way in alternative schools. But now obviously the attitude toward sexism is like night and day.

Punk attitude confuses the hell out of me. It's a rebellion against everything, including itself, so it's hard for me to tell when somebody is acting punk... or being punk in the face of perceived notions of punk? I don't know.
