enjoying modern strains of classical more than the masters, at the moment. the light electronics, vocals, and low-end to the sound (n.1) are really appealing to me now.

I just listened to "Distance". It's quite nice. The whole album is good?

I suppose not, but I still think it's pretty good. Try "Maree Noire," which is from the album's more "avant" side and see what you think. "Progeria" is more of a jazz/fusion track. I don't love everything about that track, but I think it works. "Around the Lamp" is very pretty. "Democratia" is great, especially parts of it where he seems to intentionally straddle the Arabic/blues/rock divide. The last track is overtly political in a way some may find offputting (not me, in this case), despite, or maybe because of how minimal the lyrics are. (I think of the album is in the tradition of progressive rock, fusion, older electronic music, and maybe post-rock, with an Arabic feeling, as well, in the last couple tracks.) It's only 48 minutes long. (Incidentally, This was not a conspiracy to get you to notice the album. I just happened to post at about the same time you did.)

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 3 January 2011 01:51 (thirteen years ago) link

I didn't suspect that.:P

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 3 January 2011 01:59 (thirteen years ago) link

I could teach you how to think in a paranoid manner. Anyway, I don't know if you remember, but I think I got you to listen to some oud music by this person's father, Marcel Khalife. In fact, Bachar was probably on that, if it was from Caress, but this is his first solo album.

I looked at the singles poll results for the first time today. I like J0rdan's jpegs but I hate almost all the music in the top 77 there. I was listening to the #1 just now: Girl Unit - Wut. First of all, what sort of crappy person or group would call themselves Girl Unit. Second, the song was extremely boring. And I won't talk shit about the rest of the results because no one wants to read about a shit tsunami (plus I would have to listen to all that shitty bullfuckery).

The wiki entry for Les Rallizes Denudes is quite interesting:

Les Rallizes Dénudés (裸のラリーズ, Hadaka no Rallizes) were an influential, yet reclusive Japanese avant-garde band. They were formed in 1967, and the band was known for their ties to avant-garde theater groups (as typified by Shuji Terayama's troupe) and leftist political groups, as well as for their feedback-drenched live shows. The band's style is typified by simple, repeated bass lines, shrieking guitar feedback and folk arrangement.

In 1970, the original bass player Moriaki Wakabayashi was involved in the hijacking of Japan Airlines Flight 351 orchestrated by the Japanese Red Army. Singer Takashi Mizutani was allegedly offered a role in the hijacking, but turned it down.

Oh, I don't know how to explain exactly, but something maybe about the relative obscurity of the performer and its being situated as experimental but not really inaccessible.

Really enjoying house music at the moment. Especially deep stuff with vocals and also the stuff that sounds like old 90s chart music.

Hm - that maketh sense, kinda.

Have you listened to Natacha Atlas & the Mazeeka Ensemble's CD Ana Hina, by any chance? Just bought it today, haven't had time to listen to it myself yet:)

got the rest of superchunk's lps... had only had On The Mouth, and loved it, so I dunno what was keeping me for years from investing any more time into them.

have to admit tho that the band doesn't really do a whole lot in the personal development dept. i'm not really sure i could distinguish albums if it came down to it.

kelpolaris, Monday, 28 February 2011 19:46 (thirteen years ago) link

tiit, I haven't heard that. I'm sure I would kind of like it, but I'm not really too interested in her approach. That album is mostly (or entirely? I forget) covers, which also isn't too much of a plus. I'd be more interested in this new album (of covers) by Asala, who has more of the vocal capacity to work off the Arab classical tradition, Toughani Leh Amal: http://www.rashid.com/enter.asp

90% of the time right now it's chic / sister sledge / norma jean / fonzi etc stuff. the rest is spent going through greatest hits collections of various acts from the past 30 odd years, stuff like abba, eurythmics, pointer sisters, etc. sortof doing pop research, plus i spend a fuck of a lot of time on public transport and there's no better escape than big brilliant pop songs. recent big breakup has made my love of pop (and music in general) come back bigger harder stronger, one of the v best things about the whole situation

oh and i also spend a bunch of time checking out remixes and tracks by modern electro/indie/disco/pop bands for my club

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - The OMD Singles I can't believe how much "Dream of Me" sounds like Hot Chip. Its uncanny. Did they ever cover this song?

Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie XX - We're New Here For some reason I slept on the original, I guess I remember reading mixed reviews and saw the short runtime and figured I'd save it for later. But I really
love this one. I need to hear the original now so I can figure out exactly what Mr. XX did.

Les Rallizes Denudes is quickly becoming one of my favorite bands that remind me of the Velvet Underground...

I just picked up Heavier Than a Death in the Family last weekend on a trip to Asheville, NC(only learned about the sketchiness of Phoenix Records on the Les Rallizes thread a few days after the purchase).

I was completely blown away by it on the drive home. Such incredible music. Must check out Live '77.

Rangda - False Flag

Enjoying this a bit more than I did the first couple times through, though it's still not a favorite.

Overall, at the beginning of last year it felt as though my taste was more expansive than usual. Right now, it feels like my taste is contracting a bit. (For instance, some time early last year I felt more attraction to folk rock things than I'd felt for a while, but now it's not clicking.) And it doesn't matter either way, at least not to me. I listen to some stuff, then I listen to some other stuff.

love that lp. It has an odd mix of Britfolk, psych etc and interesting mix of players of Clem Burke, Conny plank various Can etc.

Shame their later output doesn't stay in line with this's invention.

Om Kriget
This got me all excited for a split second.

Willie Rosario - Viva Rosario (1990). I had never heard this before. It kind of splits the difference between salsa romantica and salsa dura, at least on a song by song basis, if not within each song. I see a lot of people referring to "Anuncio Clasificado" as salsa romantica, but aside from the subject matter, it's not (and from what little I can make out of the Spanish lyrics, they seem more ironic and complex than straightforward romantic salsa romantica).

Now (also for the first time), Cuco Valoy's Tizo (1980). So far I'm not hearing anything else on the album as mind-blowing as "Mariana Engracia."

Carthusian Product (seandalai), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 14:13 (thirteen years ago) link

What's acid about that rumba?

It's mostly a marketing thing, but there are lots of fuzzy guitars and some of the music is pretty hard-edged in general. If it's rumba at all, it's rumba as in rumba flamenca, incidentally.

Tyvek- Nothing Fits
Blue Gene Tyranny- The Intermediary
The Descendents- Somery
Earth Wind and Fire- various stuff
and tons of other shit, all the damn time

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 18:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I had this really weird moment recently when reading the Iggy Pop bio when Blue Gene Tyranny suddenly pops up in it (I didn't know his background). It was about the last thing I would have expected...

dlp9001, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 18:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I looked up the Blue Gene thread last night and saw that. I've only read Iggy's autiobiog, the one where he says Nico taught him how to eat pussy.
I don't know shit about Tyranny at all, but I'm a big fan of his music. What I've heard, anyway. Found The Intermediary at my community radio station, planning on playing excerpts from it on my show this week.

i've scored tons of stuff in the past couple weeks but biggest surprise has been this Sharon Van Etten record that got a small amount of publicity in Spin magazine.
it's typical singer-songwriter/girl-folk and i really can't add a "but" as there's really nothing entirely radical enough about it to differentiate from the 879908320 similar releases this year. but i just dig it immensely.. the girl has a nice croon.

for first time ever today i just got the urge :

the stooges : the stooges (2 cd set)
the stooges : funhouse (2 cd set)
iggy pop and the stooges : raw power (david bowie mix + live gig edition)

initial reaction : fuckin' fantastic, and loving the different versions on the extra discs.

after months of hanging out in my usual comfort zones, suspect these will redirect my listening pattern for quite a while.

Also I bought this comp called The Roots Of Chicha: Psychedelic Cumbias From Peru. Thinking I was getting Psych Cumbia, but I don't hear why they attached Psychedelic to this? Has anyone hear it? It's not a bad compilationat all, really great selection of songs, but it's just Cumbia. I don't know why but it really irks me.

JacobSanders, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Maybe Los Mirlos have psychedelic elements, but does using a wah-wah pedal make something psych?

JacobSanders, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Marketing iirc

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I actually think a lot of cumbia already sounds a bit psychedelic (in the way it sometimes has a time-bending quality), but I think in this case electric guitars = psychedelic. Or what Trip Maker said, to get to the point.

NME - Unholy Death (also awesome but mostly I listen to awesome music so)

no, not a quarter, but pretty cheap for the most part. ESP thing and the Reichel album were the most i paid for anything. gonna sell the Reichel album though. i dig him a bunch, but he had weird impulses. that record is some sorta german country reggae pirate sea shanty thing and i don't really dig it.

scott seward, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 12:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Lucky man. The record market out here is kinda killing me, most of the stores in town think $9 is a good starting price point, regardless of condition... and so the book stores, antique stores, etc, all do the same. (Of course, one of those stores put that "Super Rock" box set by the Candy Rock Generation in their 50 cent bins, not to mention some cool heavy metal stuff.)

Pretty sure Reichel solo is supposed to not be so good, it's more the A.R. & Machines stuff... Erholung is the only one I've seen and it's pretty cool, kinda chilled out instrumental jazzy spacy rock.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 14:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't know, it opens with a cover of All Along the Watchtower and that pretty much killed it for me.
I'm not really a Little Feat fan, either. I noticed their names all over the jacket.
Yeah, "sucks" is a total knee-jerk response, but I'm reviewing it for inclusion on my radio show and I have some standards, I guess.
I mean, the record actually sounds fine, but her voice wasn't really doing it for me, I guess.

listening to some records i got for the store yesterday.

band of susans - hope against hope

primitons - happy all the time (80's jangle stuff. eh...)

roadsaw - rawk n' roll (double vinyl stoner stuff. what load by metallica would have sounded like if it had been good.)

mean season - grace (not my bag or whatever...)

def leppard - on through the night

krokus - metal rendez-vous (bought this when i was 12!)

krokus - pay it in metal

stone - s/t (the band metallica ripped off)

i can't live without it comp (90's stuff that i never listened to at the time or since. botch, merrimac, amber inn, closure, guyver-one, breakwater, milhouse, slow side down, bor, perilisium cantos, in/humanity, curll) (it's okay. not really my bag either. i'll bet my pal bull from policy of 3 and my pal don from ink & dagger were friends with all these bands. just a hunch.)

heavy pettin - s/t

trust - repression (this will sound xenophobic or something, but this isn't my fave trust album cuz the french language vocals are SO in your face and the guitars are buried a bit. i dunno, it's distracting for some reason.)

flotsam and jetsam - doomsday for the deceiver

nothing's quiet on the eastern front comp (this is more my speed. in fact i had to take it off or i would have ended up keeping it and i can't keep EVERYTHING cool, you know? assfactor 4, black army jacket, brutal truth, coercion, c.r., devoid of faith, disassociate, dropdead, eucharist, halfman, judas iscariot, monster x, suppression)

split lip - for the love of the wounded (definitely not my thing)

trash - burnin' rock

damien - every dog has its day

headpins - line of fire

oz - III warning

helstar - burning star

(got some testament and over kill vinyl and various R.E.M.-ish stuff along the lines of primitons: beat rodeo, bongos, eieio, lifeboat. probably spin some of that. just in case there is a jangle thing i missed that i might like. i guess bongos weren't jangle though. were they?)

^^love the dad rock choices in that list (loose fur, sonic nurse)

Panda Bear, Tomboy + Live at Governor's Island (included in the download coupon that came with the album. Love this live version of Tomboy, guitar has that awesome 70's Michael Rother sound/pulse)
Robag Wruhme - Thora Vukk (sounds very nice but also a bit too much rooted in early 00's cologne soundspectrum maybe? very familiar sounds. maybe this needs more time to properly sink in though)
Tom Trago - Iris
Serge Gainsbourg - L'Homme à Tête de Chou (put this on when my sis was over with her 2 year old son (named Serge btw ;-), who loves to dance to music, and he widened his eyes in amazement when Gainsbourg's voice entered the stage during the first song (title track). Fantastic).

I did too (tracked it down at the height of my U2 obsession in high school). iirc it came out in 1983 and by 1988 it already sounded really dated. Didn't listen to it much (I think The Edge only played on two tracks), but I wonder if I'd like it more now.

I'm on a great path that began with solo Roedelius, which led me to Oneohtrix Point Never / Emeralds / side projects, the Harald Grosskopf reissue, Demdike Stare, Darkstar, etc, etc. I'm jumping back into current music in a huge way after being a bit out of it for the past several years, and it's exhilarating. I remember thinking years ago how much I loved Roedelius's tracks on "Zuckerzeit" but never having investigated his solo stuff, which was a huge mistake! Interesting thing about the Snake Charmer ep: Arthur Russell has a credit on it (for lyrics, I think), but yeah it's not very revelatory.

I just played Cluster & Eno's s/t last night! I found that on original-pressing vinyl about eight years ago; one of my best finds ever, and I think I paid $8 for it. The first track, "Ho Renomo," sucks you right into the mood of the thing. I'll definitely have to scope the Vladislav Delay Quartet thing, as I've been and on-and-off Sasu Ripatti fanboy ever since Vocalcity blew my head apart--gosh, quite a long time ago.

i put on a new album by book of knots that i got in the mail (remember them? i barely do and i think i even reviewed an album once) and it was so terrible i only lasted five seconds. wooden shjips is pretty bad too. but i'm picky when it comes to 80's retro. i kinda liked the warlocks when i saw them live in philly a couple of times years ago. never really listened to black rebel motorcycle club. wooden shjips has inspired me to put on a jesus & mary chain demos collection i have in the store.

keep playing new sea & cake thing hoping i'll like it more if i hear it more but its just...okay. the synth/chillwave moments are kinda the most interesting parts. the regular sea & cake moments are just your standard late-period sea & cake.

don't do what i do, which is to play a bunch of new electronic promos and then play an old Cluster album, and then get all sad about how the promos aren't as good as Cluster and end up listening to nothing but Cluster all day

Geeta, which new electronic stuff, and which Cluster album? I know that feeling... Zuckerzeit is usually what inspires that. I've actually been enjoying solo Roedelius the most lately... As horrible as I feel saying it, sometimes I just can't help thinking that Moebius can be a little spazzy and self-consciously quirky, whereas Roedelius seems less concerned with overtly strange noises and more into some sort of immersion or textural gracefulness or something.

Biber - Violin Sontata, Romanesca

read this as bieber and was confused for several seconds

the manarchist cookbook (Edward III), Wednesday, 15 June 2011 16:13 (twelve years ago) link

my spelling on this forum is usually pretty lax but getting to Sontata from Sonatas is pretty bad even for me

really getting into Biber. Tony Conrad kept mentioning the scordatura tuning in the Mystery Sonatas as a primary influence on his playing in the Theatre of Eternal Music / 'Four Violins', so that was my in -- then I learned the Violin Sonatas incorporate birdsong and now I'm double hooked, the Sonatas have some shockingly dissonant moments

xpost gotta hear that Anthony More lp at some point

hahaha! no, i haven't been listening to all that much human league. but i have been listening to a lot of early '80s stuff as of late, mostly conny plank productions. my housemate is amanda palmer--she has a serious career going for her, and i'm glad she's at home writing new material instead of doing the treadmill-to-hell tour schedule (though that will begin again in the fall...)

Hey J, I haven't fully digested the Vladislav Delay Quartet, to be honest. I'm very attracted to its textures, but it's a fairly dense and forbidding listen... Not as immediately beguiling as the Moritz von Oswald Trio record (and it's not as if I expected it to be ultra-similar to that album, but comparisons are inevitable I think), but more going on.

cowley's 15-minute version of 'i feel love' is still the definitive one, in my book. also 'megatron man'! etc etc.

the only album i have loved from start to end was alegrias, the flamenco album of howe gelb. all the rest which was amongst others basically pj harvey, james blake, low and bill callahan was exciting for a short period of time but then it withered away like a baby girl which turned into a hundred year old granny in a second. especially disappointing was the feelies cd. one good song in thirteen? lifeless and samey, music to snore to. they sound dated and old. what happened to their fresh guitar sound? i haven't listened properly to the deerhoof cd yet, maybe there is a positive surprise hiding there. the sonic youth soundtrack was solid but very predictable. i doubt that there is still great music made these days. someone prove me wrong, please.

now playing: the house that trax built comp. "your love" by frankie knuckles is GOD GOD GOD!!

yeah that tune is freaking classic

scott, go download these mid-1980s ron hardy dj mixes pronto! the sound quality is horrible (sometimes you wonder: is that his dramatic EQing or did the bass just drop out because the recording is so bad?) but they are freaking revelatory

http://www.gridface.com/features/ron_hardy_playlists.html

and to hear phuture's 'acid tracks' in a dj mix in 1987, right after that had come out, mixed into disco! so perfect, to introduce a radical new sound that way, to coax it into peoples' brains...these sets were so different from so many of the monochromatic house sets you hear today--twitchy acid house and big disco and weird pop all blended in incredible ways

'India: Its Music and its People' (the LP says it was sponsored by the United Nations)
'Hare Rama Hare Krishna' (Bollywood film soundtrack circa '71, classic R.D. Burman/Asha Bhosle tunes--what a find!! this LP is a collector's item)
Ravi Shankar - 'Raga Parmeshwari'
'Guide' - Music from the original soundtrack (Bollywood film circa 1965 -- music by S.D. Burman, father of R.D.)
'The Best of India's New Motion Picture Music: 12 Exotic Songs from the Finest Recent Soundtracks' (looks like it's from the 1960s)
'UNESCO Collection: A Musical Anthology of the Orient: India II'
Snoopy and Charlie Brown - 'Flashbeagle' LP (Snoopy's parody of 'Flashdance' circa 1984 -- this was my record from when I was a kid, it rules)

bonus: i found my Apple ][e! will it boot, i wonder?

'Basskraft: A Bass Tribute to Kraftwerk' (Miami bass tributes to classic Kraftwerk tunes--I forgot I had this! It's great)

Wow, that I need to hear! I went through a (thankfully) brief, but pretty engrossing, Miami bass phase during my freshman year of high school. A favorite was Return of the Bass That Ate Miami, basically a bunch of tracks by Maggotron under various different names. Lots of Techmaster P.E.B. too. I used to have Have a Very Bass Christmas too.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 11 July 2011 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

basically a bunch of tracks by Maggotron

so classic. Maggotron sampled Kraftwerk, too (as did most of the Miami guys), on 'Welcome to the Planet of Bass' I think?

the Maggotron cover of 'Caroline, No' melted my brain so hard the first time i heard it

Dynamix II is probably my all-time favorite act from Miami -- 'Machine Language' is incredible, and 'Color Beats' is pretty good too

listening to some records i bought in brooklyn this weekend, at Academy:

'Shaan' - classic Bollywood film soundtrack circa 1980, i paid $10 for this but it's worth a lot more than that - funk and Moogs etc in a ridiculous gold foil gatefold, so great
Ralph Towner - 'Solstice' (sonic ECM wallpaper circa 1975, beautiful, five bucks)
Fearless Four - 'Problems of the World' (produced by Kurtis Blow circa '83, trippy cover art, $5)
Muzak: Music of the '80s (haha I already have this but I couldn't resist buying it again, $5)
Bobby Konders and the Massive Sounds - house music, 1992, six bucks

a pricey haul for me - i usually pay between $1 to $5 for my vinyl, not $5 to $10, but you know, new york city

Still on a tear with new music, which feels great given that I was totally out of the game for several years... Recently, I've been loving:

John Maus: Pitiless Censors (it's a compulsion at this point; I listen to this at least once a day)
Morphosis: What Have We Learned (this gets better with every listen; texturally gritty and palpably improvisatory techno)
Hatchback: Zeus and Apollo (self-described "new New Age" that is so gorgeously produced, touches of Balearic, the mellower end of krautrock, synthy spacey stuff, just beautiful)
Massimiliano Pagliara: Focus for Infinity (fantastically well done very reverential and restrained new disco, reminds me of the way I felt when I first heard the Metro Area records years back)
Recloose: Saturday Night Manifesto EP (this is really REALLY good, surprisingly so)
I got a bunch of Robert Palmer LPs for very cheap that have been flooring me as well, especially Clues

Liquid Sky really made a strong impression on me as a kid. I think it was mostly the combination of trippy fluorescent visuals, strange synthesized music, and boobs.

Miss Lana Rebel - All I Need
Lydia Loveless - Indestructible Machine. This might be the best country album I've heard all year, if not the best album. She's like a more convincing Miranda Lambert and writes funny songs about Steve Earle.
