This is a thread for discussing grindcore and related genres. I want to know what we should be listening to, new or old. I'm also hoping to keep this pretty open-minded - anything with a blast beat counts as far as I'm concerned. So have at it!

The new GridLink album comes out next week. The lineup is totally ridiculous at this point:
Jon Chang - Vocals (Discordance Axis, Hayaino Daisuki)Takafumi Matsubara - Guitar (Hayaino Daisuki, Mortalized (Jpn), Floating in the Sweet Abyss, Guilty Connector)Steve Procopio - Guitar (Discordance Axis, Human Remains)Teddy Patterson III - Bass (Burnt by the Sun, Human Remains , Hayaino Daisuki, War Chalking)Bryan Fajardo - Drums (Kill the Client, Noisear, Phobia (USA), Enemies of Inertia)
― that's not funny. (unperson), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 20:16 (thirteen years ago) link
Nice one! I really liked their debut, almost makes up for not having Discordance Axis around anymore.
And what's that I see there about War Chalking? That was a band Dave Witte was in after DA broke up, if I'm remembering correctly? I only ever saw the name bandied about, did they ever release anything?

Nice! I'm into grind so I am also interested in anything fairly recent to check out, thanks for putting this thread up -- grind hardly gets much play in the rolling metal thread.
― Threadkiller General (Viceroy), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 00:12 (thirteen years ago) link
AG, you'd probably like the new Rotten Sound album, Cursed. It's fast and aggressive, but has more in common with punk rock than super-extreme metal, and the songs are a little longer and more "song-ish" than many grind acts' work.

Just listened to this and frankly I think its amazing. Perfect blend of grindcore/thrashy breakdowns and just a lot of interesting stuff going on as well as PUNISHING BLASTBEATS. The vocal delivery is pretty straight HC which is nice because it would be totally weird for that kind of album to have, like, piq squeals and shit-grunts.

Rotten Sound are the heirs to Nasum's crown IMHO.
― wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 20:34 (thirteen years ago) link
Yeah, except I never liked Nasum - sacrilege, I know, but there was always something too clean about their sound. I prefer the nasty, grimy grind of bands like Phobia or Kill the Client.

The new GridLink album comes out next week.
yes!!
so, anyone hear the akbk lp? I mentioned these guys on rolling metal but nobody replied. love the stuff on their myspace:
http://www.myspace.com/akbkgrind
very chaotic, lots of left-field curveballs, long songs (for a grind band), varied. all signs point to great but I can't track the whole thing down anyhere. have even had it on backorder from aquarius records for a while as well...

new Wormrot goes hard - 25 songs in 21 minutes or something like that - sounds like their other stuff but why wouldn't you want it to
the first band on this single are pals of mine, until recently they were a grimy Agoraphobic Nosebleed bite but they have a drummer now

I've listened to the gridlink a few times now and it is so chaotic that I still haven't retained much. I do like it but I'm not sure about the production. everything kinda bleeds together.
sick leads, tho.
and I wish these guys weren't on hydra head - seems like the vinyl release with both EPs is annoyingly limited. anyone know where I could pick it up? or the discordance axis reissue for that matter? just came back from record store day shopping sadly missing DA vinyl.
― original bgm, Saturday, 16 April 2011 21:24 (thirteen years ago) link
Is 500 copies limited for a grindcore band with inherently niche appeal? It's an honest question (Jon Chang himself admitted on a blog somewhere that the Hayaino Daisuki records sold fuck-all).
― wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Saturday, 16 April 2011 23:25 (thirteen years ago) link
500 is pretty damned limited... That's like the amount a local band would press, hardly enough for a North American or Worldwide release. But if they've had problems selling off bigger amounts I can't really blame them...
― No pop, no style -- all simply (Viceroy), Sunday, 17 April 2011 06:06 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah, I'm just bummed because I've been waiting for some gridlink vinyl. love the format for grindcore on a personal level. fond memories of many afternoons spent sitting around playing tons of grind and hardcore 7"s, etc. but I guess I didn't get the memo about this one and it seems like it already sold out. whadda drag.
and hydrahead just seem to play up the pricey but limited thing a little bit more than I'd like. can't say I blame em. gotta make money somehow these days. just sucks when this stuff sells out in the blink of an eye and I've been waiting for this particular release for a while now.
― original bgm, Sunday, 17 April 2011 20:11 (thirteen years ago) link
thrashcore/grind 7"s evoke a lot of happy memories for me as well.. :)
Love it when the whole sleeve folds out to be a gruesome poster.

hydrahead are usually pretty good with represses though, right?
― pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 22:39 (thirteen years ago) link
It looks like this one was marketed as a 500-copy limited run. But surely they can get around that and press more on different coloured vinyl or something, or simply not include the karaoke version of the album that was packaged with the first run.
― wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 23:42 (thirteen years ago) link
I mean, if they've sold out so fast clearly the demand is there. So rather than economising to ensure they're not stuck with remaindered stock, they're kinda shooting themselves in the foot by not pressing more. They are a proper label, after all, not some bedroom CDR operation with covers made from felt and old socks.
― wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 23:44 (thirteen years ago) link
(To be clear, I had been thinking that 500 copies seemed a lot for the type of band this is. But in hindsight I really think Hydra Head underestimated the demand, assuming the Hayaino audience and the grind audience were the same.)
― wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 23:50 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah, I mean grind is a ridiculously narrow niche but the discordance axis connection alone is HUGE. total legends.

Saw Psycho/Afternoon Gentlemen/Human Junk last night, good show but once again rather under-attended.
Afternoon Gentlemen pretty killer grind with 2 bassists, definitely going to check them out further.
Psycho were great too, super cool guys as well, got their entire discography across 3 CDs, nice after just having the mp3s for years.

Anyone going to see Wormrot on tour soon? They're playing a two-day fest in Dublin in September with Doom and a bunch of other hardcore, crust and grind bands. Haven't actually been to a grind gig yet (Napalm Death excepted) so I'm looking forward to it!

Super into the akbk album now that I've heard it. Like a really freakin tight band grindin it out while a noisier greg ginn solos off to the side. The songwriting is a cut above and material that could have come off as a disjointed, proggy mess in lesser hands really shines here. It all flows even with the occasional curveball but all with a fine layer of guitar skree lathered on top and subverting your expectations. Which is key!
Get this!!

also doing a bit of a disservice to focus on the guitar noise. it's the most novel aspect the band has going for it but hardly the only thing worth writing about. the drumming is particularly strong and always compliments the action here.
also a fan of the vox. often trading off between low growls and high shrieks but always with a ton of reverb on top. some delay effects here-and-there as well. struggling to think of a comparison... maybe incantation for the lower growls? that doesn't quite get at it but they are similarly atmospheric.
and, in general, there are nods to black metal but nothing too overt. I personally appreciate that they don't overdo it. lots of newer hardcore bands blending in bm can strike me as ham-fisted. but I'm cool with the occasional frostbitten riff which is what we have right here.
