ILM Snapshot: Last Five Records You Bought

My Monday thread! Might be more revealing than top 100 lists, because more 'objective' (if people are being honest - and please, be so). Rules: you have to have bought them. They dont have to be for you. Records = any format, not vinyl records. Here are mine in order of recency: 1. Various Artists - Magnum Opus (80s disco/rare groove compilation)
2. Radiohead - OK Computer
3. Sugababes - One Touch (second copy bought)
4. Various Artists - Now That's What I Call Music 48
5. Sister Sledge - We Are Family

Tom, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The more honest everyone is, the more interesting this is.

Pixies - BBC Sessions
Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You
Beyond and Back: The X Anthology
A Tribe Called Quest - The Love Movement
Mogwai - Rock Action

I think these are the most recent ones.

Josh, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

In reverse order:

Frances-Marie Uitti: 2 Bows (four quid on Rupert Street)

Tony Ferrino: Phenomenon (yes, yes - Coogan's nadir, but it was worth the £1.50 for the look on Pam's face when she finally realised who the swarthy stud on the cover was; separate thread: records bought as a gag?)

Serge Gainsbourg: No.2 (reissue of 1959 LP on 10" - for Pam; the one with the bouquet and the revolver on the cover)

Mouse On Mars: Idiology (LP, a penny short of a tenner in Rough Trade)

V/A: Clicks & Cuts 2 (triple-CD - also RT. Much sweeter and warmer than #1 on first listen).

Michael Jones, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Prepare to be bored to death (most recent most first):

1. Eminem: The Marshall Mathers LP 2. Outkast: Stankonia 3. Destiny's Child: The Writing's On The Wall 4. P.J.Harvey: Stories from The City, Stories from the Sea 5. Manhattan Resarch Inc.: Raymond Scott

(ps: if these all fold up as if I didn't type "return", which I did, why did they? If not: ignore me... )

I was thinking that this would be a good recurring thread, like the one last week with your current favourite. Snapshots are good. More, please.
1. Rocket From the Crypt - Group Sounds
2. Richard Buckner - Devotion + Doubt
3. John Martyn - Empty Air
4. Momus - Folktronic
5. AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
also just replaced copies of This Nation's Saving Grace and Bend Sinister, and a few others. It's almost be nice to have ten spots here.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

If this is recurring, AND we have ten spots, AND we all continue to be honest, I for one am going to be rather quickly exposed as a just-12- CDs kind of a fellow.

mark s, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I can only remember four:

Bob Dylan - Slow Train Coming Whiskeytown - Stranger's Almanac Mouse On Mars - Idiology Tim Buckley - Morning Glory

But I'm listening to _A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure_ from Matmos, and I didn't buy that too long ago, so let's say it makes five.

1. Tortoise: Standards (Warp)
2. Radioactiveman: Uranium EP (Rotters Golf Club)
3. Autechre: Confield (Warp)
4. Spectre: The End (Wordsound)
P.S. Does anyone know anything at all about Spectre? I bought the album thinking it was dub but it turned out to be some kind of turgid hip-hop affair. Shame I got it online as I would return it. Is his other stuff any better?
5. Wagon Christ: Musipal

Needless to say my IDM collection is taking over everything else i have... I've started growing an RDJ beard too! HELP ME! HELP ME!

Calla - Scavengers
Mojave 3 - Excuses for Travelers
Damien Jurado - Ghost of David
L'altra - Music for a Sinking Occasion

bnw, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

My last five were (I think): 1. His Name is Alive - "Mouth to Mouth" 2. Mogwai - "Rock Action" 3. The Church - "Hindsight 1980-1987" 4. Labradford - "Prazision LP" 5. Kitchens of Distinction - "The Death of Cool"

I also got a free promo from the pile that the store I bought No. 1 used from was trying to get rid of - "Herd of Instinct" by Orang, a very intriguing album apparently by ex-members of Talk Talk. All these except No. 2 I got used--hooray for internet shopping!

Clarke B., Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

1. The Best of Lipps Inc. 2. The Best of Bobby Jimmy and the Critters 3. DOC - No One Can Do It Better 4. Betty Davis - They Say I'm Different 5. Gary Glitter's Greatest Hits

Maybe, but what honesty! You are to be commended.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I tend to buy in bulk, so it will have to be 5 CDs I've bought recently:

1) Faust - Faust/So Far 2) Public Enemy - Yo! Bum Rush The Show 3) Go-Betweens - Before Hollywood 4) Mos Def - Black On Both Sides 5) Pulp - This Is Hardcore (with free Glastonbury CD! Ooooooh!)

DG, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

If the question were the last 5 CDs I've bought that cost more than $5, my answer wouldn't be quite as humiliating.

Chris H., Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

In the past year I've mainly been cutting cds from old vinyl for friends (and occassionally a copy for me) or making cds from mp3s (or other cds) or getting freebies from friends but here's the last 5 I actually purchased :

Jane Birkin - Master Serie Vol 1 (what an atrocious voice) Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 - The Very Best (not as cheesy as you might think) Talking Heads - Fear of Music (probably their best) Joy Division - Substance (thanks ILM for making me buy this) Suede - Suede (not as bad as I'd imagined nor as good as I thought it might have been)

ethan, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm scared because my last three purchases are exactly the same as Mark S's, but in a different order. I had copies of the Eminem and Outkast already but felt bad about depriving the record company of my money.

The other two were Daft Punk and the Avalanches. Baa!

Nick, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I just found a bunch of old shit for real cheap that I'd been meaning to get for the LONGEST time....really...

1. Buzzcocks - Spiral Scratch 2. Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material 3. Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me 4. Ultramagnetic MCs - Critical Beatdown 5. Gang of Four - Entertainment!

There were a lot more -- my biggest day ever, 18 I think, nothing compared to you all -- but these are my favorites, so far.

Oh, and does anyone know where I can find Big Star's Radio City on CD or LP as a standalone album?

Cinerama, Disco Volante. Manic Street Preachers, "So Why So Sad" single. Kylie Minogue, Light Years. Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack. St. Etienne, Places to Visit.

I'm certain those aren't even right. My dad bought me the New Art Riot EP, do gifts from others count?

You're a brave man to admit the third above, Geordie. The man I always try to *avoid* comparing Paddy Kingsland to, I mean :).

Anyway, for me, leaving aside the several CDs I've been sent or got with magazines etc., in reverse order:

Skitz, _Countryman_ Joe Meek and the Blue Men, _I Hear A New World_ Joe Meek, _The Triumph Sessions_ Ty, _Awkward_ Momus, _Folktronic_

Momus, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

This is the most boring thread I've ever seen.

1. Turbonegro: Ass Cobra
2. Turbonegro: Darkness Forever
3. Gluecifer: Soaring With Eagles at Night to Rise with Pigs in the Morning
4. The Hellacopters: Payin' the Dues
5. Jay-Z: Vol. 3...Life and Times of S. Carter

If videos count, I bought Turbonegro: The Movie more recently than the Jay-Z and it's an all-Nordic top-5.

Could be forgetting something, but anyway..

Neil Finn - Nil Fun

Gorillaz

The Fiddleheads - live (my brother in law's band)

Folk Implosion - One Part Lullaby

and the fifth most recent could be one of three (mind is gone); The High Fidelity Soundtrack, Matador Records 10th Anniversary, or Spookey Ruben - Modes of Transportation Volume 2. I should qualify that I put my CD buying on near hiatus due to MP3 'almost too much new music' supersaturation.

It might be more interesting to ask "what were the last five records you listened to?" The answer of course never corresponds with the last five records bought. I've just knocked up a compilation tape for the Oxford Tube on Monday morning, the last five tracks of which are as follows: "Cool Cool Collie" by Hopeton Lewis; "The Music Goes Round And Round" by Henry Hall and his Orchestra, vocal by George Elrick; "Respect" by Rotary Connection; "There Goes Concorde Again" by . . . And The Native Hipsters; and a mix of birdsong recorded by me on Boars Hill at 6:00 this morning and Eric Portman's closing remarks about morality from Powell & Pressburger's "Canterbury Tale." Am yet to decide whether to segue into the Stylistics' "People Make The World Go Round" (album version) or Bomb 20's "Made of Shit" - but may well just leave the tape as it is.

See what I mean? Much more individual and interesting than the expected litany of REM/Elliott/Mouse on Mars/cLOUDDead/Elbow. Yes no no yes?

Electroloids - dunno (but it's made by half of Drexciya)
Brian Ferry - Slave to Love, but it came with a free 12" of The Cars 'Drive' and 'Only You' by the Flying Pickets, can't argue with that
Currently on the stereo, thou I didn't buy them:
Manitoba - Start Breaking my Heart (leaf)
Schneider TM - The Light 3000 (electronica remix of The Smiths - There's a light....)
Bobby Conn - Dunno which album, but I'm sure he's bit of a genius?

Last five things I listened to? OK:

Just now in work? Guns N Roses - Appetite For Destruction. Made me extremely miserable except for "Sweet Child Of Mine" and the changeover in "Rocket Queen".

On way into work? Mixtape which - again - seemed to take on a gloomy bent as I recorded it. The Dismemberment Plan's "Spider In The Snow" accompanying my 5 minute walk in.

On the Oxford Tube last night? Various Artists - The Rough Guide To West Africa. And before that Various Artists - Afrique Dynamique. African music seems to be the only thing that can relax me currently. Playing them I suddenly wanted to listen to and write about nothing but this stuff. Then it struck me I couldn't say much about it and I only have 5 or 6 records/tapes of it. When I got back in I stayed up for several hours but played nothing.

Before that? "Fear Of Drowning" a single by British Sea Power, who seem promising enough though not as interesting as the last two minutes of a set I caught suggested (consisting of them beating the stage and each other with branches).

youn: It's on vinyl. I sat through the first side. The godawful fucking voice was what was making me angriest. What's he trying to do, parody a hillbilly accent or something? Have been reading Lloyd Bradley's excellent 'Bass Culture: When Reggae Was King', and so now know my ska from my rocksteady from my bluebeat from my mento from my calypso from my dub from my dancehall...

1. 'Horace Andy Meets Naggo Morris/Wayne Jarrett Mini-Showcase' - Basic Channel reissue of two early eighties reggae albs originally brought out on the Wackie's label. The Wayne Jarrett side includes a version of 'Truly' by Lionel Richie!

2. 'Rocksteady Soul' - Various Artists. One of a number of great budget price reggae comps from the Metro label; this one brings together 21 hits from Duke Reid's Treasure Isle company, THE label for smooth soulful downtempo rocksteady, including 'hits' from Alton Ellis, U Roy, John Holt, the Jamaicans etc.

3. 'Another Green World' - Eno. Never heard it before! Smiled when I recognised the 'Arena' theme, and 'Zawinul/Lava' is a v. clever 'tribute' to 'In A Silent Way'. Phil Collins on drums, eek!

4. 'Marzette And Company' - Marzette Watts. Reissue of an ESP label free jazz freakout from 1966 - the first track is called 'Backdrop For Urban Revolution', to give you some idea of the flavour. Features the godlike genius of Sonny Sharrock on gtr (the main reason I bought it), plus Byard Lancaster, Clifford Thornton, Henry Grimes etc. etc.

5. 'Hand It Over' - Dinosaur Jr. Cost me a whopping ten pence in a local library sale - just about worth it. Only played once - not much in the way of actual tunage, but oh that gtr playing....

Plus some singles - 'Murder On The Dancefloor', 'Black Coffee' by All Saints, and a charity shop copy of 'In A Broken Dream' by Python Lee Jackson w/Rod Stewart, which was sampled by Portishead for some old pony or other...

Jess: while the Crane AK album is weaker than the Luomo and the MRI releases (neither as luscious as the former nor as pearly pert as the latter) it's worth sticking with. It's so subtle that it takes about ten listens or so to really click, but it has a lovely eeriness to it once it does.

jess, I'm sorry for not responding sooner, I only received the set today. I have listened to the first disc only, and I am still a little affected. I may not make as much sense as I normally would (if I normally do, that is).

First, I will tell you that I ordered it from Yoshiyuki Suzuki, caretaker of the Improvised Music from Japan website -- which, afaik, is the only place you can order it. It was expensive, but you knew that already.

Again, I have only heard the first disc, but I believe this is the most amazing music I have heard in quite a while. I have not felt this way after hearing music, probably since I heard my first music (Beatles), or possibly after hearing Debussy in college. The music is almost all electronic, maybe stylistically similar to very recent Autechre, but so much more alive, breathing. It is improvised, as they say, and though there is much computer generated sound, it is still a human heart in this music.

I will be listening to the set for a while, I suppose. Maybe if I can pull my head together, I will write something about later.

As a sidenote, there are only 800 of these made, with 300 going to the musicians on the discs. My set says that I have #63 of the remaining 500. I think if people were exposed to this music, Suzuki would have a hard time dealing with requests for the set.

I went to Tower Records to buy the issue of Songlines that I missed in the confusion of my moving to a new address and it's being in the process of moving to a different publisher. I ended up perusing it, but deciding not to buy it. I picked up Prince's "Purple Rain" on sale. Last purchase before that:

"Farid el Atrache Forever. . . Vol.2" Om Kolthom "Habebi ysaad awkatoo" (with two other songs) Mohammed Abdel Wahab (no title given in English, but starts with two songs: "Toul Omri" and "Egri Egri" Kazem Essaher "La Ya Sadiki" Stevie Wonder "Greatest Hits Vol.2"

The first three Arabic CDs are all really good overall, but I already had some of the songs on cassette, so I knew what I was getting. Kazem Essaher is another matter and I can't recommend this recording. I bought these at a store I was told about. It used to actually have these CDs on display, but has basically given up on trying to sell them. I picked through a few piles of dusty CDs stored under the main display cases. The first time I went there I bought nine. It's nice to be able to walk into a store and buy them instead of ordering them online, especially when the price ends up being the same or maybe a little less (since they gave me a discount).

Prince - Crystal Ball - $20 and not a tenth as spotty as people say-- sure, there are some dud tracks but at least 2 1/2 CDs worth of good stuff.

Orbital - In Sides - 28 minutes of "The Box," hell yeah.

Downloaded Akercocke's The Goat of Mendes, Boards of Canada's Music Has The Right to Children, and I borrowed and burned the Pimp Daddy tribute record on Cash Money, which while like 5 years old is easily the best rap record I've heard all year so far and maybe the past couple years--download it post-haste.

All of these were downloaded from Emusic. I love my Emusic subscription--since I'm not a pirate, it's the closest I'll ever get to my fantasy of running through a record store grabbing everything I can. (Naked. I'm weird that way.)

This isn't in order of download, BTW.

1:Eclectic Electric, a 245 minute Emusic-only electronica comp. (I've heard about half of it so far. Half classic, half cud, none dud.)

2:Songs In The Key Of Z, Irwin Chusid's (in)famous novelt^H^H^H outsider music comp. (Peter Grudzian rocks! Also, it'll help tide me over until I can get some Shaggs and Jandek on CD.)

3:Take The Guitar Player For A Ride, Peter Laughner. (Eehh, middling.)

4:Songs Of The Naked City, late-seventies New York punk comp. (Fleshtones, Blondie, NYD, Suicide, Richard Hell, Bloodless Pharoahs, Ramones. I reconized the uncredited last track as the Fleshtones' version of "96 Tears.")

5:First Suicide album. (However did I live my life without owning this?)

David Grubbs: The Thicket (sealed and new for $1! Don't know why. Not sure if I like it yet, but some nice harmonium drones.)
Danny Terrio presents: Night Moves (another disco instructional record...this one has interesting photographs of Terrio in the accompanying booklet, doing such patented moves as "The Mork" and "The Steve Martin," in full costume!)

1) Oxide & Neutrino - Execute
Skrewface mania! I love how petite and prissy a producer Oxide has become, and how amusingly bewildered Neutrino is. On "Only Wanna Know Cos Ur Famous", when he says "they didn't check for you!" or something like that his outrage is so little-boy-lost wounded.

2) Playgroup - Playgroup
I like how Playgroup's vision of the eighties extends way into the early nineties with lotsa dubby house influences. For some reason though I've yet to listen to this more than once, even though I really enjoyed it.

3) V/A - American Gigolo
This is like washing detergent, all those blaring synth riffs and brittle machine beats feel cleansing and slightly rasping against your skin. The best stuff on this is either a) the housier stuff, or b) the poppier stuff. So "Sunglasses At Night", which is both poppy and housey, is automatically the best thing on offer.

4) New Flesh - Understanding
The good stuff is fantastic - snapping, whirring electro-dancehall with indecipherable ragga chatter. The more conventional stuff is a bit boring and I'm pretty sure that all the guest MCs bar Roots are crap. There's a perfect ep here though.

5) V/A - Fuse Presents DJ Hell
Haven't listened to this yet, but I found it cheap and it has the Patrick Cowley extended mix of "I Feel Love" so it *must* be good.

Weird-ass beat with a missing kick that really wrong-foots you.)

Andy, how's the Soul Center one? The review in the Wire sounded pretty intriguing...

I don't like it quite as much as the previous Soul Center discs. From what I can tell, Brinkmann had to take it easier on the samples since the record came out on Novamute and not his own little label. Less tempo variation, less gritty -- in favor of smoothness. Perhaps I haven't listened to it enough, but the tracks aren't nearly as distinct from one another as they are on the first two.

Madonna "The First Album" - Burning up is a great song

Johnny Cash "American Vol.3" - One of my favourite covers album, maybe even numero uno

The Monks "The Monks" - I was told it was a classic, and it is.

Ken Stringfellow "Touched" -You can't get a better pop album for 6.66

Badmarsh & Shri "Dancing Drums" -Loving this

and The Mars Volta ep - Building up an appetite for the album now. Cut That City is a great song.

Ha! - was talking about this very 'ting last night with Marcello, who had a copy with him. You get the THICKEST booklet I've ever seen in a CD. It basically contains a long interview with Jez Kerr, Moscrop and Donald J about the origins of the band, influences etc. Very nice. Also some good photos which I'd never seen before. To my ears it sounds like they've done a great job on the remastering, unlike the Revola/Creation reissues - it's bloody thunderous on my system. I'm still not convinced about the track-listing though. Maybe they didn't have access to all the BBC trax, but why two versions of Skip-bloody- Scada and no Day One!!

Jel - "Fan Mail" - best opening track ever?

Almost a year since I contributed to this thread, so...

Oneironaut: Antipodean Dream CD - only £2 in Soho but, whoops, it's not that Oneironaut (the Ian Masters project).
Brandy: What About Us? 12" - my fave single of the year so far, a bizarre lurching thing where every word seems sculpted and tapered. Did this chart?
Gyorgy Ligeti: Chamber Music CD - one of the comprehensive Ligeti Edition things on Sony Classical, picked up from Olsson's in DC on holiday for $12. Fantastic so far.
The Associates: Sulk CD - going back about a month now, this showed up for a fiver in Warrior in Crystal Palace and I couldn't say no. I can retire that 17-year-old cassette now.
Mary Margaret O'Hara: Apartment Hunting OST CD - ordered from Maple Music back in February. Half a dozen melting moments amongst the so-so.

I listened to the Screen Prints album twice last night. I'm surprised by how much I like it. I was a bit disappointed by the Claim single with 'Mrs. Shepherd', inevitable really considering what I'd heard about it. I turned down the treble on the stereo and it sounded better. I think I just need to give it more time. The other single turned out not to be available. On the Hopkirk & Lee thread, Keith said, "they had that relaxed way with a pop song," which is just right for the ep. I'm curious about which songs he likes.

I think I was expecting something more from the McClusky...sounds very much like Pixies and Jesus Lizard in a head-on collision, with Johnny Rotten occasionally taking the mic. It's interesting, but it's probably gonna need more time to grow on me.

Textstar is a comp of the Klang Elektronik singles. I like the Farben material more than Jelinek and Gramm -- these are his most ornate and dubby productions. A different vinyl-only delux pkg called Starbox just came out too.

Ned, the Luv CDs - do you mean the Dutch band?

nathalie, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I haven't had the chance to listen to all of them yet, it being finals week and all... but FUCKING AYE the Soft Cell is some great stuff! "Sex Dwarf" knocks my brain outta my ear! I really like the ABC I listened to, too, though some friends were over and I didn't have it very loud. I love that sort of production so much. I can't wait to listen to the stuff in more depth, and I can't wait to hear the Simple Minds - maybe I'll put it on tonight.

Ned, the Luv CDs - do you mean the Dutch band?

No, this is a Seattle-area group, and luv(sic) is the full and actual name of the band. :-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The new SY album is crap.

Marc, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Jack ~ 'The End of the Way It's Always Been'
The Folk Orchestra ~ 'The Folk Orchestra'
Tweet ~ 'Oh My'
A Certain Ratio ~ 'Early'
Felix Da Housecat ~ 'presents Excusions'
New Tellers ~ 'Some People Make Things Better'

>Ned said: "have you been able to find a compilation of theirs that actually has "Think That It Might" on it? Ever since I've heard the Wedding Present version, I've wanted to hear it, but none of the comps I've stumbled across lists it!"

Well, it's on the 'Pinky Blue' album so why not just get that? (If the record stores near you are as good as they say they are they should have it) I bought my copy for 40p from a car boot sale years ago. Marvellous. I still maintain 'Blue Monday' was influenced by the album version of 'I Could Be Happy'...

Hm. That was actually one of my more recent faves from them. Experimental Jetset and NYC Ghosts, on the other hand....

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

hey davidm, how is the jack album different from the first two? in the rough trade update they say it is quite different.

keith, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The new Jack is different in that they've discovered sampling, synths, tapes and drum machines. The sweeping, weeping strings are still there on most tracks, but the sound is much punchier. It isn't exactly their 'Kid A', but it is a very varied album ('DiscoCafeSociety', for instance, is like Denim doing electroclash, 'The Emperor of New London' sounds like Godspeed You Black Emperor trying to write a pop hit)(and succeeding).
Reynolds' best songs, their best, most emotional album. Superb stuff.

DavidM, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Where did you get a copy of the new SY? The website gives the US release date as July 2 and Europe and Japan as some time in June. What's it like? The cover art looks good and it's supposed to be more of a rock album, which I think might be a good thing.
