-- Julio Desouza (webmail), September 20th, 2002 3:58 PM. (jdesouza)

I agree...lets deal with that.
Whats your personal top 5 for worst album of all time.
Rules:
You must have heard the entire album, first-hand, all the way through. (None of this, my friends friends heard it and sez it bites.)

Lord Custos Alpha (Lord Custos Alpha), Friday, 20 September 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

BTW, Q named MMM as one of the worst. I like it (though I would play it more if I found it on the double LP).

anything that's really rub has already been sold so unless I can remember shall not contribute meself.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Julio, I don't think I own a record I hate. Maybe it should be the 5 worst records you own or something.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 20 September 2002 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Top 5 in no particular order of suckiness:

1. Blur -- "Blur"
2. Oasis -- "Standing on the Shoulder of Giants"
3. Pixies -- "Trompe le Monde"
4. Neil Young -- "Trans"
5. Fatboy Slim -- "Between The Gutter and the Stars"

Derek Dalek (Derek Dalek), Friday, 20 September 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, dleone.
5 worst you own, and 5 worst you've ever heard.
You may begin your attack run, now!

Lord Custos Alpha (Lord Custos Alpha), Friday, 20 September 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

TROMPE LE MONDE the worst? Surely you jest, Derek! How could any album with "Planet of Sound" make it onto a "worst" list. Feh!

The worst I've ever owned/had:

- SEE YOU IN HELL by Grim Reaper
- GIVE OUT BUT DON'T GIVE UP by Primal Scream
- YES, PLEASE by Happy Mondays
- REVERBERATION by Echo & the Bunnymen
- MASQUE by the Mission (UK)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 September 2002 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Moby "18"
Rollergirl "Now I'm Spinning (As The Party Keeps On Rolling)"
Limp Bizkit "Three Dollar Bill Y'All"
Modern Talking "Romantic Warriors"
Celine Dion "Let's Talk About Love"

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Friday, 20 September 2002 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

5 worst that I have owned:
Long Distance Voyager - Moody Blues
Daughter of the Night - Jim Capaldi
Sides - Anthony Phillips
..
any remaining two I pick would not be nearly as bad as these - so I shall stop here.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 20 September 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Worst Record Ever Given to Me by a Homeless Person: The Obvious / Rock and Roll in the Big City

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 20 September 2002 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Len - Yo Bum Rush the Show
Gangsta Boo - I forget what its called
Madass Gangstar - M.A.G. (or something)
Blurtonia - Kingdom of Blurtonia (yet after hearing this album I have fallen in love with all Change Of Heart I could get my hands on)
The Hampster Album - by the time it came out the Hampster song was already annoying, the website was annoying and did anyone really need an album of it?
There also was a 4 song ep by The 00 Boys ("double naught Boyz") that had the super pathetic "Mudden Song".
I still have 3 of these because I can't bare to let the awfullness go out into the world even in a post microwaved state.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 20 September 2002 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

'trans' is not good by any means, but "are you passionate ?" is neil's nadir.

mike (ro)bott, Friday, 20 September 2002 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Trans is an aquired taste, I love it very much and think its his best from that whole 80s period but can see why someone would choose not to FEEL the vibe.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 20 September 2002 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Rusted Root, When I Woke
The Juliana Theory, Emotion is Dead
Vanilla Ice, Extremely Live
Vincent Gallo, When
George Harrison, Gone Troppo (the ex-Beatle competition was extremely tough, let me tell you: this beat out Ringo Starr's Drumming Is My Madness by a nose, ironically enough)

and hey--I didn't even mention Unrest!

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 20 September 2002 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Californication
2. The Doors - The Doors
3. Korn - Issues
4. Supergrass - I Should Coco
5. Royal Trux - Thank You

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 20 September 2002 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

2. Moby- "18"
3. Kiss-"Lick It Up"
4. Asia-"Asia"
5. Gene Loves Jezebel-"Discover"

brg30 (brg30), Friday, 20 September 2002 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Kilian --> RTX - Thank You????!!!! - How can a record starting off with "A Night To Remember" be bad, let alone be part of this Top 5???!!! I'm really thrown into a void of utter incomprehension here. I may never recover. The 'Grass record certainly cant be *that* bad either! WTF??!

Simon, Friday, 20 September 2002 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank You = boogie-woogie, cock-rock drivel. I regret the day I first clapped ears on that steaming turd of an album. As for Supergrass, you have no idea how grating "a band having fun" can sound.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 20 September 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

boogie-woogie, cock-rock drivel - my definition of good music ; )

Simon, Saturday, 21 September 2002 00:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Yer insane, Noodles, Blurtonia is a GRATE album.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Saturday, 21 September 2002 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

02. Revenge "One True Passion"

05. Talking Heads "Naked"

mmesker (mmesker), Saturday, 21 September 2002 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Worst I've Ever Owned:

Roger Waters - "The Pros And Cons Of Hitch-Hiking"
Van Morrison - "Astral Weeks"
Hefner - "I Love The City"
The Wonder Stuff - "Never Loved Elvis"
Spearmint - "Oklahoma"

(This last a bit arbitrary cos I can see it from where I'm sitting)

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 21 September 2002 07:48 (twenty-three years ago)

the Ex - Starters Alternators
Helium - Magic of Dirt
Velvet Underground - Andy Warhol
This comp of modern of harpsichord music
Kings of Convenience - quiet is the new loud

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 21 September 2002 10:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Van Morrison - "Astral Weeks"

I'm floored.

Brock K. (Brock K.), Saturday, 21 September 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

''I'm floored.''

in a good way or in a bad way.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 21 September 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd be interesting in finding out why Tom thinks Astral Weeks is so bad, especially because so many people think it's an inarguable classic. Myself, it never really grabbed me the way Moondance did but I can still see the appeal. Worst ever? Can't see that. Please enlighten us O Tom!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Saturday, 21 September 2002 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Astral Weeks is godhead for the middle of the album alone (cypress ave, young lovers, mdm george); though you could chop of some of the front and the end.

jale, veruca salt ep, recent luna, maladjusted, what's the story morning glory... some of the crap in my stacks that will never be listened to again and that nobody will buy off me.

Aaron A., Saturday, 21 September 2002 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel sorry for the Hefner album.

it would be interesting to collate this list.

thom west (thom w), Saturday, 21 September 2002 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Worst I've owned?

Offspring - Americana
Lou Reed - New York
Primal Scream - Screamadelica*
Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime*
Smashing Pumpkins - Machina : The Machines Of God*

(* I like the occasional track from these, but As Albums? Erk.)

Ess Kay (esskay), Sunday, 22 September 2002 00:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Replace Spearmint with Grandaddy's "The Sophtware Slump" btw.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 22 September 2002 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Yer insane, Noodles, Blurtonia is a GRATE album.

I just dont feel the love. Beisdes the album seen them live in small clubs twice and all I keep thinking is this isn't as good as Smile was. Everyone raves about them, Ian still records albums well but that album was horrid.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 22 September 2002 01:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Celebrity Skin - Hole x 5

Christ that alubms dreadful.

threemetalinsects (threemetalinsects), Sunday, 22 September 2002 07:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't really like Astral Weeks much either. The songs are pretty enough and Van sings well, but there's definitely something I'm not hearing on there. Screamadelica is much worse.

It's hard to think of an album I still own that I actually hate. I used to have an Inspiral Carpets album, and that would be pretty close to the top of the list. I'm sure there have to be some good Sex Pistols live albums out there, but I've bought two and they were both awful.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 22 September 2002 09:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Good call on Granddaddy, Tom.

Here's 5 of the worst I've ever owned :

Primal Scream : XTRMNTR
The Cure : The Top
Belle and Sebastian - Boy with the Arab Strap
Primal Scream : Echo Dek
Neil Young - Decade

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 22 September 2002 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

why all the hate? these are serious respected artists who worked with love at what they do, could you do better? I THINK NOT!!

except astrals weeks obv that sux major ass

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 22 September 2002 09:29 (twenty-three years ago)

*the meuscram album
*down town brown - quantum funk ep
*primus - brown album
*the best of visage
*toss up between acdc - high voltage (awful blues rock. i got online and it had none of the songs i thought it did) and camp lo - let's do it again (just because it was really disappointing)

minna (minna), Sunday, 22 September 2002 09:46 (twenty-three years ago)

What are you, on PCP?

HIGH VOLTAGE by Ac/Dc is a farkin' CLASSIC!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 22 September 2002 10:28 (twenty-three years ago)

alex, mine is the lame australian version... here is the tracklist:

1) baby please don't go
2) she's got balls
3) little lover
4) stick around
5) soul stripper
6) you ain't got a hold on me
7) love song
8) show business

where is the song called 'high voltage' that you would presume to be on this album?! (where is tnt? where is long way to the top?) why is the first track a cover? why is it all so PLODDING?! the woman in 'love song' is called Jean! i know what good ac/dc sounds like and this ain't it.

minna (minna), Sunday, 22 September 2002 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Kid Rock - Devil Without a Cause
Hobex - Back in the '90s
L7 - Slap-Happy
Chemlab - Burn Out at the Hydrogen Bar
Molly Hatchet - Double Trouble

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 22 September 2002 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

The Cure : The Top
the best of visage

*weeps*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 September 2002 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

''Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime*''

this isn't allowed! like all of it dammit!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 22 September 2002 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Replace Spearmint with Grandaddy's "The Sophtware Slump" btw.

BOO TO THAT.

You guys are lucky -- your worst of all time are for the most part mediocre, innocuous and in some cases stuff that I'm weird enough to like (XTRMNTR! WRD T YR MTHR). My five worst of all time have come in my ongoing stint as a demo reviewer. Imagine bands that haven't quite grasped all the essential intricacies needed to churn out shitty nu-metal, whiny emo or avant-garde nonsense, but play shitty nu-metal, whiny emo and avant-garde nonsense nonetheless. The results are so hamfisted that if they punched me in the mouth I'd be breaking kosher laws. And I can't even any money for selling their shit to used CD stores! Argh.

My five worst, then, even though you've never heard of them and will never hear of them again:

1) Goatease, The Goatease Chain Tape
2) This Revolution, Dufus*
3) Aunt Beaph, 2000 AB
4) Tulip Sweet and her Trail of Tears, Touched
5) The G. Gordon Liddys, Steak On A Kaiser

All of these bands have one thing in common: they try to be funny and/or artsy, and they fail. Fail fail fail fail FAIL.

*actually the band could be called "Dufus" and This Revolution could be the title. They never really made that clear.

Nate Patrin, Sunday, 22 September 2002 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno, Nate, all those five sound good for a laugh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 September 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

That's what I said when I picked them out of the submissions. They are not. Unless it's one of those derisive maniacal mad-scientist-about-to-unleash-destruction laughs.

Nate Patrin, Sunday, 22 September 2002 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

"Liquidizer"-Jesus Jones
"Alive"-Terry Callier
"Babble"-That Petrol Emotion
"I am Shelby Lynne"-Shelby Lynne
"Overwhelming colorfast"-Overwhelming Colorfast

Michael Bourke, Sunday, 22 September 2002 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes Nate but with proper releases there is the added gall that people are (theoretically) making money from this shit.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 22 September 2002 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Minna....I must apologize. You're dead right.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 22 September 2002 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I like XTRMNTR too. So. I'm still shocked, Mr. Zoodles, that you don't like Blurtonia to that extent. Sure, I don't like it so much as I do Change of Heart (I mean, expecting anything to measure up to Smile is pretty much hopeless right from the start), but there's some great songs on there that I keep coming back to over and over again, like "Sleeping in Your Own Bed", "Lifelike" and "Never Less Than Perfect". In the end I still like that one a lot more than the followup, and even more than anything pre-Smile, come to think of it.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 22 September 2002 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

the best of visage
*weeps*

but ned... after fade to gray it really does all fade to gray!!

(i do wonder whether i made the right choice... this is after all coming from someone who owns 'fashion nugget' by cake)

minna (minna), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I have that one around somewhere in the archive as well, for some strange reason, so hey. Anyway, Tom will sing the praises of "Tar," I know that much...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

"Tar", "Pleasure Boys", "Love Glove", "Damned Don't Cry", "Mind Of A Toy" - none of them stone classics like FTG but certainly not worst-ever status...

Tom (Groke), Monday, 23 September 2002 08:43 (twenty-three years ago)

OK maybe not Love Glove.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 23 September 2002 08:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Passage to Indica - Zion Train
Never let me down - David Bowie
The Return of Bruno - Bruce Willis
Eat Yourself Whole - Kingmaker
Rid of Me - PJ Harvey

adam b (adam b), Monday, 23 September 2002 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, EAT YOURSELF WHOLE by Kingmaker isn't that bad!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

i've just remembered i've got a System 7 album on tape, so i suppose i might reprieve them.

it is pretty bad, though!

adam b (adam b), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Fishbone - Reality of My Surroundings
Save Ferris - It Means Everything
Boredoms - Super Ae
Duran Duran - Liberty
LTJ Bukem - Logical Progression

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Swervedriver - "Raise"

2. Loop - "A gilded eternity"

3. H.E.A.D. - "Hedonism"

4. Anti-pop Consortium - "The tragic epilogue"

5. Smash Hits Presley Style

The first four for being joyless, sludgey and generally lacking in fun or emotion or any sort. The last for being a crushing disappointment in that I was expecting Elvis and got some third-rate impersonator.

Jacob, Monday, 23 September 2002 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

A Gilded Eternity does have emotion. Namely, unbridled hate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 September 2002 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Boredoms - Super Ae

?

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 23 September 2002 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

jel: Do you mean the first Velvets album with the yellow banana on the cover? Why that one?

sundar subramanian, Monday, 23 September 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Zoodles??? Damm Im no can of tomato based sauce pasta that was sued for phallic coconut trees.

Its still the worst rawk album I own. Nothing on it works for me or makes wanna listen to it, dance to it or say anything good about it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 23 September 2002 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Harsh! (Sort of like drinking J.D. in the marsh, eh!)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 23 September 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Roger Waters - "The Pros And Cons Of Hitch-Hiking"
Van Morrison - "Astral Weeks"
Hefner - "I Love The City"
The Wonder Stuff - "Never Loved Elvis"
Spearmint - "Oklahoma"
1. Swervedriver - "Raise"
2. Loop - "A gilded eternity"
Primal Scream : XTRMNTR
The Cure : The Top
Belle and Sebastian - Boy with the Arab Strap
Primal Scream : Echo Dek

if this kind of stuff is the worst you have ever heard/owned then you simply have not heard or owned enough albums. You should try publishing a music fanzine, then you will get the good bad stuff. Of course it hard to remember sometimes because you don't usually listen to it all that much. But is you hate the stuff above so much either you have an agenda or just simply bad taste.

g (graysonlane), Monday, 23 September 2002 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

The five worst albums I've gotten for free are:

Black Lab - Your Body Above Me (Bowie-damaged alt-glam-rock)
Crimpshrine - Duct Tape Soup ("seminal" East Bay punk rock equals tuneless unlistenable crapola)
Experimental Audio Research - Millennium Music (Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3 in boring improvisational noise dreck)
Gordon (self-titled) (a major-label producer's pet project, which can only mean overproduced underwritten soulless pop)
Primitive Radio Gods - Rocket (remember "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand"? no? good.)

The five worst albums I paid money for are:

12RODS - Separation Anxieties (band follows up great album with total overblown dud)
Jets To Brazil - Four Cornered Night (see above)
Doktor Kosmos - Cocktail (but bad in an entertaining way, the kind of badness that sticks with you years after the fact and you find yourself repeating bits of the lyrics like the complete drooling moron you suddenly realize you are)
Brent Spiner - Ol' Yellow Eyes Is Back (yes, as in Data from Star Trek:TNG)
Swirlies - The Yes Girls (thereby squandering the final drops of goodwill that remained from Blondertongue Audiobaton)

Nick Mirov (nick), Monday, 23 September 2002 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes g I should try publishing a music fanzine, thankyou. Oddly enough not everyone who is involved with fan-press or -publication zines is in it to get a deluge of shitty identikit CDs. If anyone who is making music can't top the Hefner, Grandaddy, Wonder Stuff or Roger Waters records they should be fucking ashamed of themselves and give it up now. Those (+ Astral Weeks which is a separate case) remain the worst things I have ever owned, which is what the question asked. My apologies for not being a masochist on your apparently world-beating level.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

(Sort of like drinking J.D. in the marsh, eh!)

JD is for them gentile city folks out in Moncton, out at George's Roadhouse we gots Seagrum's 88 or some nasty crap.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 00:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Worst albums I've paid money for:

  1. Mission Impossible 2 (Limp Bizkit, Mettallica, Rob Zombie, then... Tori Amos????)
  2. Ani Difranco, Little Plastic Castle (when I was in college, Ani could do no wrong, until this one came out)
  3. U2's Million Dollar Hotel Soundtrack (the last time I believed Amazon's "If you bought this, you might like..." recommendations)

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

5 Worst (in the tedious/drab/boring sense):

1) Mike Rutherford - Acting Very Strange
2) Rick Wakeman - Soundtrack to "Crimes of Passion"
3) Diamanda Galas - Plague Mass
4) Klaatu - Endangered Species
5) King Crimson - Thrak Attack

5 Worst (in the gloriously bad sense):

1) ELP - Love Beach, side one
2) Spooky Tooth & Pierre Henry- Ceremony: An Electronic Mass
3) Rick Wakeman - Rock 'n' Roll Prophet Plus
4) Klaatu - Hope
5) Amon Duul - Psychedelic Underground

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 01:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Worst I've ever paid for (although it was less than 40 cents in every case except the last):

Jennifer Warnes - Famous Blue Raincoat: The Songs Of Leonard Cohen
Johnny Hates Jazz - Turn Back the Clock
Great White - Twice Shy
Rick Wakeman - the one about King Henry's wives
Aix Em Klemm - (forget name, s/t maybe)

sundar subramanian, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

''3) Diamanda Galas - Plague Mass''

Crazy Joe...that's a great rec.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

tom I'm surprised you didn't take the 'bad taste' out!

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, if that's the Galas album I'm thinking of, it is pretty dang impressive.

Listing the worst I've ever heard rather than worst I've paid for is just too cheap and boring BTW.

sundar subramanian, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Aix Em Klemm - (forget name, s/t maybe)

What'd you hate about this one, Sundar? You like SOTL/Labradford? Just wondering b/c I didn't think it was bad.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

It's very hard for me to measure the definitive worst album. It's kind of like to trying to measure the smallest earthquake ever. My scale isn't calibrated very well at that end of the spectrum. Beyond a certain point, everything is just kind of lame. But recent albums I've been compelled to sell back include:

Grandaddy - Sophtware Slump
Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
Social Distortion - Mommy's Little Monster
Oasis - What's the Story (Morning Glory)

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

sundar, i too paid real money for johnny hates jazz "turn back the clock". it's not all bad, "shattered dreams" for example is a fine example of '80s drive-time.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Some of the worst I've paid money for:

Bruce Springsteen - Human Touch
Incredible String Band - Hangman's Beautiful Daughter
Tom Verlaine - Flashlight
Dylan & The Dead
Goodiepal & Friends

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the problem I had with the velvet underground was that woman's terrible singing.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I still have the Seahorses CD.

So I beat all y'all!

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Incredible String Band - Hangman's Beautiful Daughter. You're insane, this is a great album.

hstencil, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 16:27 (twenty-three years ago)

''I think the problem I had with the velvet underground was that woman's terrible singing.''

Nico! but that's only three tracks (maybe four). there's plenty of other delights left.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

i'll have to try and dig it out, I don't like being a hater.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not saying it's their best (i prefer white light white heat myself) but it's a good one for sure.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

this velvet underground ain't so bad, but it'll probably go back in it's box, it's just a little dreary. I shall replace it in my list with Nick Drake "Bryter Layter", pleasent music, but those vocals are horrible.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Incredible String Band - Hangman's Beautiful Daughter. You're insane, this is a great album.

Yeah, I know it's my problem, it's a classic and all -- I just found this thing completely repellant from the get-go and sold it a week after buying it.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Doesn't sound like much of an attempt to let it "grow" on you, eh? Sometimes that can be a very compelling way to appreciate something. F'instance, I hated U.S. Maple when I first saw them in 1995, but since they've become one of my favorite bands, last weekend I saw them and they were yet again amazing.

''this velvet underground ain't so bad, but it'll probably go back in it's box, it's just a little dreary. I shall replace it in my list with Nick Drake "Bryter Layter", pleasent music, but those vocals are horrible.''

so even lou reed's vocals are terrible then?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

lou's were okay.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

vocal styles are a big issue to me. I'm just being honest.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

that's fine but um, you could tape it and exclude Nico's tracks as you can't stand them.

it's fine if you don't like the way the alb sounds, it's quite nice to hear some cannon bashing really.

BTW I'm still doing that tape for you. I had to give a copy of one of the recs (a track of which i'm putting in) for a friend so he could burn it. he's given it back now so i'll do it and post it next week.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark: Super Ae was WAY more repetitive than I thought it would be. I couldn't get past that part at all. There's probably something I dislike more, but nothing was coming to me at the time.

Yeah, if that's the Galas album I'm thinking of, it is pretty dang impressive.

What's impressive about it? That she can do more than one scream?

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

She doesn't deliver screams only, there are lyrics here you know (are we talking about plague mass (live)) BTW?

Grandaddy - Sophtware Slump

fool! ;)
keep it, if only for the first song...

willem (willem), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 10:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark: I don't generally like post-rock as a genre, including what I've heard from Labradford. But I liked a few minutes of the Aix Em Klemm, where it briefly sounded a bit like Tactile and where there were some nice resonant textures. These were the parts I heard before buying. Unfortunately too much of the rest reminded me too much of a mushy public TV family drama soundtrack with mumbling on top. It was probably better than Lou Reed's New York, the Mary Chain's Darklands, or Radiohead's Pablo Honey though so maybe it doesn't belong in this list.

Nick Drake's voice is horrible? I like Nico's voice too actually.

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 25 September 2002 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

BTW Noodles, what I heard of that Len album was ace. (That's the one with "Steal My Sunshine", right?)

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 25 September 2002 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Worst albums I ever bought?

S*M*A*S*H ~ 'Self Abused' (yeah, I know. Shut up.)
Primal Scream ~ 'Screamadelica' (obv)
Cosmic Rough Riders ~ 'Enjoy The Melodic Sunshine'
Nine Inch Nails ~ 'The Fragile'
Mental As Anything ~ 'Fundamental' (actually, I quite liked this at the time... )

Yes, the one (if I recall correctly) recorded at St. John's in NYC (which I must admit, seems like a great choice on her part). Why, is there **another** version of it out there? Good God...

Joe (Joe), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

well I'll have to listen to this (as long as ILX allows me heh) and then tell you what i luv abt this.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 26 September 2002 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Shit! I can't think of 5 albums to name that will annoy people! Oh well...

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 26 September 2002 09:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes g I should try publishing a music fanzine, thankyou. Oddly enough not everyone who is involved with fan-press or -publication zines is in it to get a deluge of shitty identikit CDs. If anyone who is making music can't top the Hefner, Grandaddy, Wonder Stuff or Roger Waters records they should be fucking ashamed of themselves and give it up now. Those (+ Astral Weeks which is a separate case) remain the worst things I have ever owned, which is what the question asked. My apologies for not being a masochist on your apparently world-beating level.
-- Tom ([email protected]), September 23rd, 2002.

(first of all, sorry for such a dely in reponding to this from a few days ago - too busy at work lately to devote much time to ILM)
So, I wasn't in it for that reason either (i think the main reason was killing time) - yet i got plenty of crap anyway. Probably from listing in factsheet 5 or whatever. I did some short record reviews but it was only of stuff I actually bought for the most part.
We can disagree, the hefner album you mentioned may be the worst hefner album but i'll take it over most anything on the radio.

This is the worst album of all time: You're Icecream's Dirty by Devilhead (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=Awzg9keptkq7c)

And not pick nits but the original question was worst 5 you have heard. Someone later suggested it should be owned. but whatever.

g (graysonlane), Thursday, 26 September 2002 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

of course, that should be Your Icecream's Dirty...

Ok, this goes way back to my Kiss Army days, but everything after "Destroyer" sucked, though it took me awhile to wake up and admit it.

Steven Copley, Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

the 5 worst i have bought and heard all of

1 Oasis 'Be Here Now'
2 Two Lone Swordsmen 'Further Reminders'
3 Manic Street Preachers 'This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours'
4 The Verve 'Urban Hymns'
5 St Germain 'Boulevard'

doesnt include numerous freebies

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 April 2003 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Five worst I own:
Fastball - All the pain money can buy
Son Volt - Trace
Daft Punk - Discovery
Lee Perry meets Bullwackie in Satan's Dub (just because its shockingly bad considering who made it)
Anderson,Bruford,Wakeman, and Howe

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Thursday, 17 April 2003 23:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The worst 5 albums I've ever heard:

Coldplay - Parachutes (only heard it from start to finish once. Which was enough).

M People - The one with 'Fantasy Island' or whatever it's called on it. That was bad. My sister had it on rotation at her house once when I was visiting.

Radiohead - OK Computer - bought this on the hype alone, and it's turgid.

Oasis - Be Here Now - 'Don't go Away' is alright but the album is unlistenable for the most part.

Meatloaf - Bat out of Hell 2 - urgh. Terrible.

Calum, Thursday, 17 April 2003 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

The worst I've ever owned:

Aceyalone - Book of Human Language

Black Eyed Peas - Behind the Front

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien - I Wish My Brother George was Here

Common - Resurrection

V/A - Operation Beatbox ("industrial" covers of rap hits. not as good as it sounds, really. not even funny.)

College rap can be so awful.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

that black rebel motorcycle club album can be added to my list

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Common - Resurrection

Oh, wow. Just... wow. That's such a great album. My mind boggles...

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm thoroughly by how many of my favorite albums are listed here: When I Woke, the Brown Album, Trompe Le Monde, The Sophtware Slump, Little Plastic Castle, Nothing's Shocking, I Wish My Brother George Was Here, Resurrection, and OK Computer...and just the fact that someone even considered mentioning The Reality of My Surroundings on this thread makes me question if some of you folks actually have ears. But ain't no biggie; Nick luv da kids.

"and the girl...she's hip-hop, y'all." Or whatever. I want to vomit just thinking about it. Makes my skin crawl, like the scene in Dead Poet's Society where the kids all stand on their desks.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

so one 'bad' line makes it the worst thing ever?

oops (Oops), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm guessing that's just one of his reasons...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

but I want to know what else could be considered truly awful on that album. Sounds like he's just reacting to all the respect it gets.

What hip-hop albums do you like, Chris? Not trying to be snarky. Just interested.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Does Ressurection get much acclaim these days? Maybe in 97 or 98, but these days it's not much of a sacred cow.

Common in general angers me, and that's the only album of his that I've ever bought. So it goes on the list.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

What Yanc3y said, but also that Dionne Warwick(e) record written and produced by Barry Manilow.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

That's of the records I've owned; I'm sure there are worse LPs.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Common's Coke commercial angers me, like, a lot. But you didn't answer my question.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I've gotten turned off by Common recently, but I don't hold that against Ressurection. (I'm not denying your right to hate it, just curious as to why you consider it absolutely horrid)

oops (Oops), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Which do I like? Many, too many to list. Del and Common just, well they just plain suck. And disliking the Black Eyed Peas isn't going to give anyone the impression that I'm some wanton hip-hop hater, I don't think.

Aceyalone was in Freestyle Fellowship, right? Well, the two albums that I've heard from them were good. Though they shouldn't have made fun of the LA Dream Team. That almost turned me against them.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Del plain sucks? Mwahahahaha! (Did you hear that one nickalicious?)

oops (Oops), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Ressurection if I recall was just dull, not offensively bad.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Del's automaton shtick does get old fast...

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Alanis Morrisette - Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie
The Cranberries - No need to argue
Finley Quaye - Maverick a strike
Shania Tawain - Come on over
And, for old times' sake, this http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00000GBK9.03.LZZZZZZZ.gif which a good friend of mine still listens to, for the love of God

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 18 April 2003 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually a Dan Bern album somebody gave me is probably the worst thing I've owned. I would say something by James but I haven't had that tape for a decade now, so I can't remember it too clearly (thank God).

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Fair enough, but not liking someone's 'schtick' is far from 'plain sucks'. I mean, the man's got skills, whether you like how he uses these skills or not is a different story.

If Q asked their readers to vote for the 50 worst albums of all time, the list would probably look basically like the list of the 50 best albums of all time, only with a few bestselling favourites (Ace Of Base, Aqua, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls) added. So what would the point be anyway?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

No album that is in the Acclaimed Music Top 1000 or Colin Larkin Top 1000 deserves a mention here anyway

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently someone disagrees with you Matos:

Emotion is Dead is the third release from The Juliana Theory. Funny this is actually a disc that prompts many emotions. The opening track "Into the Dark" is a keeper. The band plows into power pop territory with reckless abandon. The tune features a power-chord chorus that is impressive and keyboards interplay nicely here. "Don't Push Love Away" is Top 40 bound. The cut is grounded with an acoustic guitar, while building to an electric rock chorus. Background vocals and an impressive lead vocal falsetto are well presented. Even though The Juliana Theory appears to be rooted in pop/rock alternative they still deliver some solid, hard-hitting, heavier cuts. "To the Tune of 5,000 Screaming Children" and "Is Patience Still Waiting" both explode with chugging, distorted guitars and powerful vocals. "You Always Say Goodnight, Goodnight" is one of the disc's most engaging tunes. This piano driven melody is augmented nicely by the bass of Chad Alan. As the album's only full-fledged ballad, the tune reaches its peak with a lead guitar and lead vocal that excels at creating an intense vocal centerpiece. The spotlight shines on Brett Deter, the voice behind The Juliana Theory. His songs are well crafted and at times emotionally engaging. With Emotion is Dead, Deter and his bandmates are able to create a pop buzz that leaves a nice aftertaste. -- Steven Losey

OK. Here are five absolutely awful albums as in terrily below-par efforts by artists that have otherwise done a lot of great stuff during their careers:

David Bowie: David Bowie
Phil Collins: Dance Into The Light

Wings: Wild Life

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Two of Calum's picks are absolute classics, and two of the best albums ever made. Two are OK (although one of them is clearly a below-par effort by that act). The last one - by M People - I haven't heard, but the singles weren't exactly that impressive...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

1) David Holmes - Bow Down To The Exit Sign
(The most irredeemebale piece of sonic shit ever to land on my doorstep)
2) Fischerspooner - #1

3) Every record by The Smiths because i loathe them to the point of pathology.
4) Oasis - Definitely Maybe

It was a bit of a disappointment after the aspic bite of the album before, though, Geir. And it doesn't have that warm scuzzyness of Hollywood Town Hall either.

I like it a lot better than anything else they've ever done. More fully-realised, less "unfinished" and definitely less country.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

that's very interesting scott.

omg, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm surprised how OTM much of this thread is. The only albums I like from Scott's list are Visage and Daft Punk. I used to like the Trompe, and may do so, but I cannot imagine ever *wanting* to hear The Pixies again. I suspect I might like the Klaatu recds, but I haven't heard them.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

You really do hate lots of stuff though, Dr.C. It's hard to keep up with the stuff you don't like. I know you like Stockholm Monsters. My standards probably aren't as high.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw, c'mon Scott: every one of us is bound to be horrified by somebody's choices, no matter how insane or inexplicable they may seem. (Your list was "almost" flawless.) It's the great equalizer! ("Agree to disagree", etc.) With that in mind...

(these all bored the crap outta me...)

1.Tony Conrad w/Faust - Outside the Dream Syndicate
2.Sonic Youth - Sonic Death Live
3.Golden Earring - Mad Love
4.Savoy Brown - A Step Further
5.Primal Scream - Screamadelica

Space Needle's first (only?) LP earns a reprieve because of it's beautiful Roger Dean cover and some amusing song titles. Apologies to Witchfynde, Surgery, Horslips, Zodiac Mindwarp and anyone else who just wasn't awful enough.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I love that Space Needle album!! They used one of the songs on that album on a kids-on-heroin documentary on HBO to great effect.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

you know, the cool whispery song, "Yoooooooohoooooo, don't know who you are" or something like that. That song is beautiful.

Yeah, and i know, different strokes and all, but when i think of the WORST stuff that is out there i don't think of neil young and the pixies. i mean when you think of the really really awful gunk you could list. I think the worst album i own is by The Slikkee Boys(sic?).

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I guess there's a temptation to be less than honest and more outrageous if you've got an axe to grind. I don't really hate "Screamadelica" THAT much, but the number of rave reviews it's received in proportion to the amount of enjoyment it gave me inspired me to be more harsh than I should've. So I can understand somebody doing the same thing to Neil Young or "Astral Weeks" (but NOT "Double Nickels On The Dime"!)

...oh, and this probably deserves a whole 'nother thread, but there's at least 2 perennial "Worst LP Ever" candidates that I happen to really like (not quite love): Metal Machine Music and Attila - (you know, the Billy Joel thing!)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

How can so many people take offense to Screamadelica and The Sophtware Slump? Both are among my favourites of ever.

Has anyone heard the Chromeo album? I think that'd probably top my list at the moment.

bbc6 personality (bbc6 personality), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

my 5 most deeply flawed, among revered catalogues/reputations:
-sebadoh
-replacements
-pink floyd
-belle & sebastian
-aphex twin

duke problem, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

What's flawed about Aphex Twin? I'm just curious.

I can't really answer this thread, I don't listen to crappy albums all the way through.

Stupid (Stupid), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

pearl jam 'vs'
sublime 's/t'
bad religion 'no substance'
nofx 'punk in drublic'
type o negative 'october rust'

middle school was the worst evah.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

See, I didn't mind the Slickee Boys. Not that I want to hear them again, but "worst?" I'd still have to stick with Famous Last Words as worse.

mike a, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

No, see, just the worst i own. not like the worst on earth or anything. But they probably aren't even the worst thing i own. They just came to mind.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

FYI, The Spaceneedle album you guys refer to was their SECOND - the first (and better) album came out on Zero Hour a few years before The Moray Eels album, it was called Voyager and parts of it rocked very hard. 2/3 super nice guys too.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 11 March 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, right the second album. I liked it a lot. I never heard the first one. I never understood why people didn't like the 2nd one. Great noise/jams/songs. Great sound/production too.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 March 2004 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets
the cheese.

DUKERITE, Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"These albums are all really good and you must try harder to find stinky records."

-- scott seward (skotro...), March 10th, 2004.

Hooray for scott seward!

If "Nothing's Shocking", "The Top", "Trompe Le Monde" and "OK Computer", to name a few, are among anyone's worst albums then the rest of their collections must be in-fucking-credilble! Sonic Youth's "Dirty" being mentioned on this thread is also a shocker.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 11 March 2004 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr Snrub, correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you Evan? Just checking.

And Outside the Dream Syndicate rules! You must have some taste for New York minimalism/drone if you bought this (unless you're just a Faust fan) - what did you not like?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 11 March 2004 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

How the hell did you figure THAT out? I'm impressed!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Evan Dorkin?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Correct!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

5 worst albums that I have purchase.

- Astral Weeks - Van Morrison
- Spartacus - The Farm
- HMS Fable - Shack
- Eminem - Marshall Mathers
- James - Gold Mother

Hey leave off The Boy With The Arab Strap if only for Seymour Stein.

holojames (holojames), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

god, seymour stein is one of the worst fucking songs on that album.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 13 March 2004 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

No it isn't!
It's beautiful.

holojames (holojames), Saturday, 13 March 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Trans isn't that great, but it's kinda charming in its poorly executed awkwardness. Certainly superior to the dreadful Are You Passionate. But even that album isn't that bad in the greater scheme of things, just bad by the artist's standards.

The likes of Harvest may be overrated - it's far from one of his best, although it does have a few great songs - but worst of all time? Of course not.

Here's a total stinkeroo:

Richard Ashcroft - whatever the new one is called. Fucking appalling.
I get sent all sorts of dire corporate punk from EMI. At least it's good second hand shop fodder...

stew!, Friday, 10 March 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Primus - Pork Soda
Sebadoh - The Sebadoh
Public Enemy - Muse Sick in Our Mess Age

It's hurting me to try to think of more right now.

p.j. (Henry), Friday, 10 March 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

worst albums i have owned at one point or another:

coal chamber - s/t
orgy - the one with the cover of blue monday
spawn soundtrack
korn - issues
vines - highly evolved

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 10 March 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Studio albums by jam bands whose names have been scrubbed from my memory, but the pain remains

erklie (erklie), Friday, 10 March 2006 18:21 (twenty years ago)

not "worst" so much as "deeply disappointing" -- horrible albums that closely follwed great ones:

- Yo La Tengo, Summer Sun; the gap in inspiration and vitality between this and Electr-O-Pura is about the same as the gap between It's Hard and The Who Sell Out.

- Sonic Youth, A Thousand Leaves; after the masterful set of SYR EPs, each delving deeper than the last, expectations were high. Then Thurston Moore talked about how SY should have the Dead's audience. Little did I know that he'd start actively courting the Dead's audience by steering clear of anything vaguely smacking of effort.

- Mercury Rev, The Secret Migration; everything seemed to be in its right place, but nothing cohered.

- Sleater-Kinney, All Hands On The Bad One; I had to check the liner notes multiple times to make sure it wasn't a collection of outtakes and b-sides, because most of the songs sounded like half-finished cast-offs. Ironically, their actual b-sides from their previous and subsequent albums were much more fully realized.

ok, i can only think of 4 right now.

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:53 (twenty years ago)

SY's A Thousand Leaves does have "Sunday" on it, which is a pretty good song.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:15 (twenty years ago)

Definitely not proud of once owning:

Huey Lewis and The News - Hard At Play
Def Leppard - Retroactive
Wang Chung - The Warmer Sound of Cool
Starship - Love Among the Cannibals
Ride - Tarantula

daavid (daavid), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

WORST ALBUMS I BOUGHT

SUEDE - HEAD MUSIC
MY BLOODY VALENTINE - ISNT ANYTHING
SONIC YOUTH - DIRTY

-- (E...), April 18th, 2003.

This means you have either extremely good or extremely bad taste.

daavid (daavid), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:23 (twenty years ago)

SY's A Thousand Leaves does have "Sunday" on it, which is a pretty good song.

True, that's definitely the best thing on there (as it was in their live shows around that time). So call A Thousand Leaves a half-decent single with lazy outtakes before and after it.

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:55 (twenty years ago)

six months pass...
Worst albums I have:
Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks.
Aqua - S/T.
Roisin Murphy - Ruby Blue.*
The Darkness - One Way Ticket To Hell...*

* Note: these albums aren't that bad, they were just disappointing, especially after first impressions / hype.

GLC (ZakAce), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

here are some shitty albums I've owned at some point in my life:

Max Q: Max Q. WTF this was so bad.
Nathalie Archangel: Owl.
david bowie: tonight.
the guess who: all this for a song.
ringo starr: ringo IV

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

I probably haven't even heard any of the worst 5 albums of all time. While I love "best of"-lists, "worst of"-lists are just pathetic.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

I probably haven't even heard any of the worst 5 albums of all time.

What part of "personal" are you not getting? You must have heard five albms you disliked more than others, surely? Stuff without melody, that sort of thing.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 21:43 (nineteen years ago)

In which case, singles would have been better.

But I still find it pathetic. It is a lot more interesting to discuss stuff you like rather than stuff you dislike. Obviously, a lot of you guys disagree, which I presume is why you dislike Q (Q are more busy writing positive and constructive articles about stuff they find good rather than dismissing a lot of music lots of people like like NME do)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I see we've done this already. My apologies, do move along, nothing to see here.

(I find people's dislikes as interesting as their likes. Different strokes, and all that)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

Update!

1. Big Star - In Space (Apparently, I'm in the minority on this one. It got really good press.)
2. Keith Fullerton Whitman - Lisbon (This was (erroneously) listed on the Rolling 2006 Singles Thread, so of course I had to check it out. It's a very boring 40-minute ambient piece.)
3. Jason Spaceman - Guitar Loops (Not that I expected it to be any good, you understand.)
4. Jim O'Rourke - Happy Days (I just don't like experimental music very much. After being completely blown away by his still-incredible Bad Timing LP, it amazed me just how awful and boring this album was. I'm Happy and I'm Singing and a 1234 was a real piece of shit, too! I am now pretty much convinced that Bad Timing was a lightning-don't-strike-the-same-place-twice kinda thing.)
5. Mogwai - Mr. Beast (this one was a total in-one-ear-out-the-other letdown (where's the HOOKS???), especially since it came after their career-best happy songs for happy people.)

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 00:35 (nineteen years ago)

It is with a heavy heart and bitter reckoning I submit the following woeful catalog:

Blondie - The Hunter
Kate Bush - Aerial
Lou Reed - Growing Up In Public (but really, not much worse than Rock and Roll Heart, The Bells, Mistrial, Set The Twilight Reeling, Ecstasy, or Legendary Hearts)
Grace Jones - Bulletproof Heart
Talking Heads - Little Creatures

Dr. Joseph A. Ofalt (hyloolnuspstt), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

I'll have an answer to this one just as soon as Fountains of Wayne release their next album.

dlp9001 (dlp9001), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

three months pass...
Oh yeah: an addition to my previous post:

Razorlight - Up All Night.

Incidentally, XTRMNTR rules.

GLC (ZakAce), Friday, 12 January 2007 01:28 (nineteen years ago)

1. Blur -- "Blur"

so this thread got off on the right foot then...

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Friday, 12 January 2007 01:41 (nineteen years ago)

I'll third "Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking." I bought it without hearing it cause I was pretty into Floyd at the time and couldn't find it on P2P. One listen and its never left the shelf since. Roger Waters really might have one of the most annoying singing style possible.

graf cycliz (graf cycliz), Friday, 12 January 2007 05:00 (nineteen years ago)

xpost are you for jk ?? I'm listening to "Beetlebum" as we speak and it's quite good. I just got finished giving the album a solid run-through and while it's no "13" it's certainly no "Think Tank"

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Friday, 12 January 2007 06:39 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe I had that Boredoms album in my list - now I think it's great. The rest have withstood the test of time though.
