This is the master that was NOT used for what became the Picture Disc Mix, this was intended to be the master, but was shelved last minute; this master was intentionally sampled at a higher rate, so as to achieve a 'pop' sound / production, unlike the mix to be found on the 'actual' jesu Self Titled, a move which would be an absolute travesty for some! And a move that was decided against at the last minute, so the master was resampled back to the original pitch and sent to be pressed as the Picture Disc. So, this master is unreleased, and available here for the first time, the 'actual' Picture Disc master, is also available here at Bandcamp.

The Picture Disc of the Self Titled Jesu album, was remixed entirely for the LTD ED Picture Disc version (1000 copies), released in 2006. An Alternative mix with quite significant differences to the original album mix; the concept was to remix it more 'cleanly', due to the original mix containing a lot of distortion. There are still clicks, etc in this mix though due to the nature of the original recording. Here, the album is now remastered in 2012, since the original Picture Disc master was intentionally mastered flat.

The catalyst for this entire remix of the album was the pressing plant who were to cut and press the picture disc - with the original master of the S/T, they claimed the original was to max'ed out and distorted to be cut to an picture disc! I was, at the time, intrigued by the concept of a cleaner, and even 'poppier' mix of this album, anyway, so set about cleaning the the thing up. Hence the re-sampled higher speed version; attempting to go even further with this 'pop' concept.
For the record, my personal favourite mix of this album IS the original mix, which is known, universally, as the debut jesu album 'S/T', the mix that made it to CD/Vinyl, etc, etc.

Sheer Mag just got my $4!

i love bands like Sheer Mag where they operate w/such (in a sense) totally played out forms and influence but there's some sort of undefinable spark to it and the tunes are just THERE

reminds me of the Exploding Hearts in that sense though these guys add a few more classic rock moves to their power pop/garage punk

The awesome New Zealand band Beastwars (kinda Kyuss-y, but more pummeling) put out their third album The Death of All Things - their first since 2013 - back in April, but I just found out about it today, so it's become my final music purchase of 2016.

Bought 7 albums from the Ohm Resistance label today. They do heavy, noisy, industrial-ish dub and drum 'n' bass; Bill Laswell appears on a bunch of their releases, and they put out stuff by Scorn and by the group The Blood of Heroes, which features Laswell, JK Broadrick, and others.

some of you will know that i'll occasionally rep for the music of Alex Ward - most recently seen playing guitar with the Flying Lutenbachers.

New collaboration with Brooklyn improv saxophonist Sam Weinberg just out [urlthis week, but I've only just got round to listening to Noonward, his collaboration with 'rhythmic storyteller' Sean Noonan. Delaying getting into this was a big mistake, as it's really *excellent*. Surprisingly rich, for what I thought in a perfectly good way might be somewhat limited to the more abstruse ends of free improv (delay was probably bcos i didn't feel i was in the right *intellectual* state - a reservation that turns out was entirely unnecessary - cos at times it really moves. the mixture of drums, playful clarinet, *hard* guitar, and general tonal playfulness has been executed with some magic imo.

For the more austere and intellectually minded in these *internal* times, the composition/improv sextet Projected, Entities, Removal and quintet Glass Shelves and Floor are well worth your time imo. I particular favour the first of those. Hope the sleevenotes are available on downloads, as they make a good read on the musical theory behind both.

Hopefully this is a dumb question, but how are people listening to digital music they buy on BC these days? Streaming through the BC app, or downloading and listening through other means?

Because I'm a huuuuge Bandcamp supporter and streaming sucks, yet I mainly buy music that I might put in a DJ mix (and so need the files), or use it as a tip jar and then still listen on some other artist-exploiting platform.

I do need to start using Bandcamp + Sonos. For the app, I wish it was possible to easily download tracks you've bought for offline listening, a la Google Podcasts (and I assume most podcast apps). Maybe it's possible and I'm an idiot?

I download everything I buy on Bandcamp. It's right on every album/ep/track in your collection--a "download" text link that lets you select the quality (i.e. FLAC, mp3-320). Or right after you complete a purchase, the page it takes you to says "download" and if you set the quality you want, it then gives you links for every item.

I use the (non-mobile) website for buying/downloading, haven't used the app. But there must be a way there, too.

I download too, but unfortunately my downloaded files are very separate from my home listening setup these days. I used to use iTunes + iPod and listen to files in the car, now I don't use the iPod anymore (and don't drive a car). The files just go on my usb for possible mixing.

with another Bandcamp revenue-share day coming up Friday, and then one June 19, i'm hoping folks could point to some excellent music (available on Bandcamp) made by Black artists that speaks to the Black experience in America and/or BLM, police brutality, racial inequality, etc.

I'm so happy to say that with <1 day notice before the 6/5 "Bandcamp Day," we managed to get 36 folks participate, buying 72 albums so far, with a further $1k donation so far. Another $1,000 coming, and trying for another 60+ people who want albums, for the Juneteenth "Bandcamp Day". It's a small thing, I know, but given preexisting health concerns prevent my participating more directly during COVID-19, I'm glad I could do *something*.

This Friday, 6/19--Juneteenth--Bandcamp is directing their usual 10%-15% from all sales to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund! To support that initiative, to support Black artists, and to support direct day-to-day needs in the struggle for justice and equity for all Black people, I'm doing a small effort via my Musicophilia blog, per the below.

Basically, you share the below tweet and point people to a (or many) favorite Black artists on Bandcamp, and me and Chicago producer Mike Schpitz will buy you (2) albums by Black artists of your choice on Bandcamp, and donate $20 in your honor to the organizations in the link below. I hope you'll join in, and spread the word!

So far on June 5th (when Bandcamp ran a similar initiative, with all money going directly to artists/labels), we heard from 36 people, bought 72 albums/eps, and donated $1,000. We're hoping to get to +/- 200, and will be donating another $1,000 no matter what.

hm, the This Heat box arrived and it’s a black card box with an inkjet of the front and back covers stuck on by hand. CDs and book are all present and correct, but it’s not the box they showed on the site. I guess I’m glad to support them though. As long as it *is* them of course.

That's a bit shoddy. Is the version you have on Discogs? I'd feel inclined to add it so people know.

I've wondered in the past about some reissues with no real indication they're legit. Anyone know how much checking there is behind the scenes for that sort of thing?

(There are two editions of Abfahrt Hinwil - Links Berge Rechts Seen on bandcamp and I guess I should not be a cheapskate even though I only want a digital copy and buy the one with more "deluxe anniversary vinyl repressing" type details rather than the cheaper electronic-only one with no blurb, just to be slightly more sure some of my cash is going to the right people.

Also a couple of years back a bandcamp popped up promising Solid Space Space Museum vinyl preorders and it was frustrating because I wanted one but up to that point word had been that the people involved didn't want anything to do with it and it would never see the light of day officially, and I didn't want to give money to bootleggers - I passed on it and happily it now has a legit reissue through Dark Entries)

Debuting in 1988 as a self-released 8xCassette boxset. Chapter Eleven collects the solo recordings (1976 - 1987) from one of the earliest members of the US Industrial Noise scene, coalescing a wide swath of influences and culling experimental techniques into inventive new terrain. Carefully remastered from the original tapes, this deluxe reissue is a long-awaited rescue from obscurity.

I don't know if it's necessarily "awesome," but I do think it has a melancholic beauty to it--I put an album of improvised multi-layered acoustic music (and experimental electronic reconstructions of same) that I did when I was 20 up on Bandcamp. The more important thing is any money folks pay for it is being doubled and donated to bail funds, mutual aid funds, and social justice and civil rights funds:

I did order something from a Swiss record store a while back (via Amazon) and they deliberately sent both items separately, so there might some kind of customs reason?

this is an american label and i'm in USA so not a customs thing –– luckily there was a way to email the label and so we just dealt with it via paypal. i think this might have something to do with what they call a "fan account" vs. an account you use to host your own music (or no music at all, in my case). also my own incompetence is probably at play if i'm being fair. like bandcamp will regularly stop me from streaming records that i've alreay paid for, ON bandcamp. because according to them i don't "own them" ... whatever!

Ha, I often have this problem as my money-having time is pretty sporadic. As an artist, I honestly don't mind if people don't buy on the bandcamp days. And as a bandcamp stan, I kind of feel fine about giving them their cut too, if you only bought on fee-free days then they'd go bust.

i'm curious now what happens when an album you purchased is removed from bandcamp - i guess it just disappears?
i mostly use the sonos app to listen but always make sure to download files as well

Yeah, if you haven't downloaded the files then I think you're out of luck.

on Amazon Music, if you buy a digital album and the album then gets removed from their library, you still remain access to the streaming digital media, and can still download it (you just can't buy or access the album if you never had previously).

if Bandcamp shit outright disappears, I have a lot of downloading to do to my Google Drive. not sure how they can get away with that since they advertise you getting free digital access to the music along with your mp3s/FLACs, which implies some level of permanency.

Considering the intent behind Bandcamp Friday and how it ensures more money in the pockets of artists it seems churlish to complain about anything, but... I'm not the biggest fan of how it has already re-aligned the release calendar to be a metric shit-ton of releases once a month, rather than being more spread out.

Again, I'm all for it, but it's easier for me to buy more music when it's more spread out and it's not as easy to give my wallet one huge hit once a month.

lol, I'm still spending a fair bit today! I just wish it wasn't a once a month thing where we can make sure artists get a bigger cut, is all! I'd rather do it every week!

I totally agree, I wish they would just halve or reduce their revenue share overall during the pandemic. What it's done to the release cycle, and to artists feeling like they're on a monthly schedule, is really a bummer.
