opening/ almost title track is drifty/dreamy with some extended guitar. doesn't sound too different from smoke rings. looking forward to this album.
― mizzell, Monday, 11 February 2013 15:58 (thirteen years ago)
sounds like a slow version of In My Time, and the electric guitar, and somewhat like War On Drugs
― nostormo, Monday, 11 February 2013 16:42 (thirteen years ago)
Smoke Ring didnt have that breezy electric guitar.great tune.

Between this, Mac DeMarco, Real Estate, and Cass McCombs, I think I've found my favorite "current" sound.

Mac DeMarco sounds a little like Vile early stuff
― nostormo, Monday, 11 February 2013 18:02 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah all of those I've listed to me are very close in sound in one way or another. I'm seeking more of that sound as well.

ariel pink?
― nostormo, Monday, 11 February 2013 18:47 (thirteen years ago)
I guess so, I wasn't sold with Haunted Graffiti but liked a track or two I heard here and there from the last record.
― Evan, Monday, 11 February 2013 18:52 (thirteen years ago)
My impression is that Ariel Pink isn't as measured as the others, that's part of what I like about all of them.

― nostormo, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:20 (thirteen years ago)
Thanks! Love Cleaners From Venus, kind of like Woods (they're from my home town area apparently- kind of a fun fact), love Pavement though they generally exude more hip angst than the cited bands in my opinion, love the Fall.
― Evan, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:21 (thirteen years ago)
Mozart is too angst-y as well...
haven't listened to music in forever, should revisit.
― Evan, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:22 (thirteen years ago)
Clientele is like the UK version of all this imo, too.
― Evan, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:26 (thirteen years ago)
The potentially double album was written on the road, reunites the band with longtime Dinosaur Jr. producer and Smoke Ring tracker John Agnello, and features guests like Farmer Dave Scher of Beachwood Sparks, Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa, Jennifer Herrema of Royal Trux, and Woods frontman Jeremy Earl. In a interview with Spin, Vile called the album “our [Fleetwood Mac's] Tusk, but no cheese. Just rock.”
― nostormo, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:40 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, i think the DeMarco album is the best of the lot
― Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Monday, 11 February 2013 19:42 (thirteen years ago)
i just listened to the mac demarco album (2), and it has it's moments, but i'm not sure i'm going to be able to overcome my hatred of a few guitar strumming styles that he relies on too often. i have no idea how to explain in words what i mean, but i'm talking about the strumming style used at the very beginning of "Cooking up Something good", and also the strum where you mute the 2's and 4's, like at the beginning of ""Still Together". i have too many painful memories of being stuck in a room with a guy who played nothing but that style while staring intensely at me and repeatedly asking for feedback. i'll keep listening, though!
― Z S, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:46 (thirteen years ago)
i shudder to say it, but i realized what it is: it's the dave matthews band guitar strum. i have trouble getting past it.
― Z S, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:53 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah that is truly a very jam-band guitar style, though I think it is offset by the style of everything else around it in this case.
― Evan, Monday, 11 February 2013 20:15 (thirteen years ago)
really don't get this guy (kurt v)

the production is rich and full of small details, as oppose to smoke ring which was more stripped down.maybe he was jealous of War On Drugs?
anyway, sounds like the sort of an album it's hard not to love.Vile for the Masses, in a good way.

it is also a much more optimistic record than SRFMH, a disadvantage in a way.

nope. 'too hard' and 'goldtone' are nice tho
― am0n, Monday, 1 April 2013 18:11 (thirteen years ago)
it's not me, it's Kurt! though there is at least one new idea, which is a much more detailed and accessible sound.
record is great, but there's nothing as immediately strong as Society Is a Friend or as depressing as Runners Up. of course, it needs more listens.
― nostormo, Monday, 1 April 2013 18:17 (thirteen years ago)
this sounds great already, can't wait to buy it
"wakin on a pretty day" was just in 'pretty nice' territory for me (other than the guitar stuff toward the end of the track) so i am pleased to find a lot more on the album that i think is more interesting

Funny you say that cause by elimination, the only tracks I don't get(yet?) Are Shame Chamber and Pure Pain. The others are all great, maybe Girl Called Alex is somewhat the highlight of the all highlights .
― nostormo, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 23:46 (thirteen years ago)
shame chamber was the one that jumped out at me. rest of the record kind of washed over me without making an impact.
― mizzell, Thursday, 4 April 2013 14:17 (thirteen years ago)
it's a grower. the melodies are kinda buried under the production. but they are there.
― nostormo, Thursday, 4 April 2013 14:43 (thirteen years ago)
this album is good, but so far it lacks the distinct feeling halo had. that one was like a defining statement of burned out alienation, this one is just a collection of good tunes... so could be worse.
― Spectrum, Thursday, 4 April 2013 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

― nostormo, Thursday, 4 April 2013 14:48 (thirteen years ago)
compared to smoke ring for my halo, yeah. i've never heard the feelings he captured on that album expressed so well.
― Spectrum, Thursday, 4 April 2013 15:00 (thirteen years ago)
well, i agree that he is at his best with the sad songs. i'd say Halo might had stronger songs, but more fillers as well. (though there is a Halo sort of tune here as well: Girl Called Alex). The new one is much more consistent ( a problem he had with all of his records till now).
i have a problem with the half baked production Halo had on some of the songs as well. as i said, it's more accessible, but what the hell.

liking this record a lot. along with the two early release tracks (Pretty Day and Never Run Away) I'm most into Too Hard and Girl Called Alex. (which is my daughter's name so I was glad nothing bad happened to Alex in the song)

i'm guessing you have the glitchy 192kbps promo leak from matador which some have speculated is a 320 rip that somehow reports that it is 192. mp3 players base their length estimate on filesize so that would probably account for the longer reported track lengths
― diamonddave85, Thursday, 11 April 2013 15:21 (thirteen years ago)

Might be seeing him tonight as well but not super fussed. Someone get me excited. Favourite song of his is that remix of Runner Ups. :/

man
I like him live but the best part is often the acoustic solo bit to start the encore imo. not that the band is bad but he's great by himself.

yeah it's on spotify...one real keeper is the ghost of freddie roach, good tune
some longer/alt version of album tracks...the last song is a cool little instrumental snippet but it's only about 1:30 long...
no one that bought the vinyl is really missing out that much imo
