opening/ almost title track is drifty/dreamy with some extended guitar. doesn't sound too different from smoke rings. looking forward to this album.

sounds like a slow version of In My Time, and the electric guitar, and somewhat like War On Drugs

Smoke Ring didnt have that breezy electric guitar.

I guess so, I wasn't sold with Haunted Graffiti but liked a track or two I heard here and there from the last record.

My impression is that Ariel Pink isn't as measured as the others, that's part of what I like about all of them.

cleaners from venus is good if you haven't heard 'em, early 80s brit diy stuff along these lines.

Thanks! Love Cleaners From Venus, kind of like Woods (they're from my home town area apparently- kind of a fun fact), love Pavement though they generally exude more hip angst than the cited bands in my opinion, love the Fall.

Clientele is like the UK version of all this imo, too.

yeah, i think the DeMarco album is the best of the lot

i just listened to the mac demarco album (2), and it has it's moments, but i'm not sure i'm going to be able to overcome my hatred of a few guitar strumming styles that he relies on too often. i have no idea how to explain in words what i mean, but i'm talking about the strumming style used at the very beginning of "Cooking up Something good", and also the strum where you mute the 2's and 4's, like at the beginning of ""Still Together". i have too many painful memories of being stuck in a room with a guy who played nothing but that style while staring intensely at me and repeatedly asking for feedback. i'll keep listening, though!

i shudder to say it, but i realized what it is: it's the dave matthews band guitar strum. i have trouble getting past it.

Yeah that is truly a very jam-band guitar style, though I think it is offset by the style of everything else around it in this case.

i've heard his solo live show is better but i saw him with the violators and it just dragged like nothing i've ever seen

never saw him live, but from what ive seen on youtube - it seems a bore

i saw him live a couple of times a few years ago and hated him every time, but the records are great, especially the last one.

Live was alright, but I didn't really get into him fully until afterwards.

the production is rich and full of small details, as oppose to smoke ring which was more stripped down.

it's not me, it's Kurt! though there is at least one new idea, which is a much more detailed and accessible sound.

record is great, but there's nothing as immediately strong as Society Is a Friend or as depressing as Runners Up. of course, it needs more listens.

this sounds great already, can't wait to buy it

"wakin on a pretty day" was just in 'pretty nice' territory for me (other than the guitar stuff toward the end of the track) so i am pleased to find a lot more on the album that i think is more interesting

pure pain is an early highlight for me

some people like square shells but no matter how many times i return to it, i think it's the one release of his that i DON'T like! it sounds really bland and rounded off

Are Shame Chamber and Pure Pain. The others are all great, maybe
Girl Called Alex is somewhat the highlight of the all highlights .

shame chamber was the one that jumped out at me. rest of the record kind of washed over me without making an impact.

it's a grower. the melodies are kinda buried under the production. but they are there.

this album is good, but so far it lacks the distinct feeling halo had. that one was like a defining statement of burned out alienation, this one is just a collection of good tunes... so could be worse.

compared to smoke ring for my halo, yeah. i've never heard the feelings he captured on that album expressed so well.

well, i agree that he is at his best with the sad songs. i'd say Halo might had stronger songs, but more fillers as well.
(though there is a Halo sort of tune here as well: Girl Called Alex).The new one is much more consistent ( a problem he had with all of his records till now).

i have a problem with the half baked production Halo had on some of the songs as well.
as i said, it's more accessible, but what the hell.

Square Shells is so good. I rate Halo higher but Ocean City is a great track.

liking this record a lot. along with the two early release tracks (Pretty Day and Never Run Away) I'm most into Too Hard and Girl Called Alex. (which is my daughter's name so I was glad nothing bad happened to Alex in the song)

Some of the tracks seemed a bit bland on first listen honestly- it is a grower, right? Don't think I've had a close enough listen either. I had been excited about it especially due to that first track.

it is a grower if there ever was one, though i have to say i liked the record from the start. now i like it even more.

about Alex= she will be married happily to Marc, so you're safe, dmr.

i think Alex, and Was All Talk are the best songs here, though really, it's all kinda great.

definitely a grower.. after the first couple of listens i was kinda bummed that i didn't like the record that much and then after a few more listens i started noticing more and more bits and pieces of songs that i REALLY liked until i basically decided that i loved the album

I've heard so much good about this record, particularly all the drumwork from Stella Mozgawa. The only song I've heard is the title track though. It hasn't really caught my ear, even though I've put it on three or four times.

I know some of these songs were supposed to be long but the version I have has some even longer versions of these songs. Has anyone else heard this and can compare the two?

Same here, loving this album, went out and bought the vinyl after two listens.

Got this on vinyl the other day. Absolute perfection. Less of a...'vibe' to it than Smoke Ring had/has, but the songs are incredible. I could listen to Goldtone all day.
