They commemorated the occasion at the site of the original Comiskey Park, the location of Disco Demolition Night in 1979, as they were burning albums."

Cautiously optimistic for the album - played the ever-loving crap out of the last three, still spin them on occasion, haven't liked Patrick Stump's solo stuff as much as I've wanted to.

they played tons of stuff from cork tree and prior... dipped into the last two albums only intermittently and played only the single off the new album. was a very conscious 'back to basics'/real heads know the deal kinda thing i guess, but they sounded incredible. very fun show, would attend secret fall out boy show at 375 cap venue again.

maura, Friday, 12 April 2013 05:39 (five years ago) Permalink

The day FOB dropped the album stream, I listened to it about three times consecutively during work. And later, almost home, the cars were jammed trying to exit my subway stop parking lot. And my auto is non-mobile for for minutes, like, this really sucks.. but suddenly the local pop radio station here segued their rush-hour dance party into "My Songs," and it was the best moment ever. We were all so stuck in this new summer heat, and I rolled my windows down and turned it way up--the moment in the video where everyone says fk it and leaves their cars to party with it...

Despite the radio broadcast it did sound great out of the car speakers. I have so much love for this album already. I love all of the hopeless prose, there are some great lines on this one.

Best Saves the Day albums are Through Being Cool and Stay What You Are, imo.

how's life, Friday, 12 April 2013 15:44 (five years ago) Permalink

idk actually bc neither brand new or saves the day "crossover" exactly. like, brand new is pretty uniformly grim, and saves the day are amazing but extremely entrenched in pop-punk and emo traditions until in reverie where they decide to sound like weezer (and it's their best record imo but i'm alone in that)

one thing i'd recommend actually is taking back sunday's louder now, which wouldn't be on a lot of Best Emo Crossover lists but is a crucial record in that it creates a lot of the space that infinity on high would expand on the next year. this may be a false narrative but it's kind of how i experienced it

One of my kids made me download "Immortals" after seeing Big Hero 6. I have now heard it 57 times. It's not much of a song, but it's better than the Imagine Dragons song he made me download from the Transformers soundtrack.

I was just listening to this bit (on my second listen-through) and thinking how sharply this record captures what has become perhaps Fall Out Boy's primary aesthetic preoccupation: the way they take bombast, typically a mode of delivery, and turn it into a concentrated property in itself. These songs feel simultaneously structured and destructured by bombast, or maybe I should reverse those verbs - more like, they added too much bombast to ordinary songs until they exploded, and then they pieced together new songs out of the shards.

Particularly telling how the broken delivery of the refrain here immediately gets repeated at the start of "Favorite Record".

this is def the best non-folie FOB album, brad otm

pretty much all of their records have either failed experiments (rat a tat) or egregious filler (l slept with FOB and all I got..., fame<infamy, etc), and this album just...doesn't. even something like immortals is just "not as good as everything else," rather than a throwaway or failure

maybe "the mighty fall" is a more agreed upon example of a failed experiment? not so much for the rap verse but for the fact that the rap verse is by big sean.

Although they thought the line before the Big Sean rap was "I want to lock you up inside and swallow, swallow the cheese!"

Anyway, I haven't heard this full album yet. I've been listening to the tracks that have been available via itunes and I'm not all that into them. Hoping this changes once I get some context.

My ranking of albums is probably like:

IOH=FAD>SRAR>>FUCT>>>>>TTTYG

Are you saying they copied saves the day

, Sunday, 18 January 2015 18:41 (three years ago) Permalink

Basically a repeat of my experience with 1989. Album that I've been looking forward to basically since the last one came out, been dreading since the first awful single, and landed in my iTunes on release day, probably never to be listened to again. A halfhearted attempt at radio-friendluness that leaves behind all the stuff that that made them melodically and lyrically interesting. They did it so well on the last record! Everything on that one felt like a single. Everything here feels like a b side.

New S-K today takes away some of the sting, but this record is a bummer.

ABAP hot takes:

"Irrestistible" – Great lead track, comes out swinging full power, clenched teeth, hooks for days. Something military about it, might be off-putting for some, but I'm enjoying the firepower.

"American Beauty, American Psycho" – Some fun bits, but blech, irritating as fuck. Can't imagine this succeeding as a single. To the extent that I can hear the drumming, it sounds great :D/D:

"Centuries" – The suffocating, grotesquely cloying downside of Tim's "they added too much bombast to ordinary songs until they exploded, and then they pieced together new songs out of the shards" formulation. Pushing real damn hard for an early call on the year's worst video, too. Fuck FOB.

"The Kids Aren't Alright" – Okay, this is more like it. Lovely vocal performance from Stump. Digestible bombast/content ratio.

"Uma Thurman" – The "Munsters Theme" has a deathless grip on my brain's pleasure centers, one of my all-time favorite musical anythings, so I'm stupid with happy at odd intervals during this otherwise merely brilliant song. Up there with "This Ain't a Scene" as a one-track band summary.

"Jet Pack Blues" – The mid-tempo tracks might be taking this. Just beautiful.

"Novocaine" – Is there any contemporary rock band more dependent on "weird noises" for their appeal? Not faulting the band, I like weird noises, just asking. Decent song, though I'm starting to experience boldness fatigue, a Slim Jim snapping in a human face, forever.

"Fourth of July" – Not that I was expecting a ballad…

"Favorite Record" – Like "Jet Pack Blues" a demonstration that pulled punches sometimes hit harder. Hugely welcome after two tracks of beatdown slog.

"Immortals" – Figured from the title that this would suck in the decisive manner of "Centuries", but it's goddam awesome. Music by which to make rash decisions. Hey, we should drive to Vegas, get married, and not tell anyone. Like right now.

"Twin Skeleton's (Hotel in NYC)" – Nice closer, though not an immediate favorite. Danny Elfman soundtrack vibes.

i can't speak to tracer's revulsion, but i'm put off by emo's fundamental relationship construction, where a woman's job is to be so devastatingly wicked gorgeous that the poor, angst-filled sucker she's entrapped will willingly (if wrathfully) endure her gender's inevitable perfidy, generating grist for his next batch of art tantrums. she glows darkly, he suffers tunefully, blah blah blah. squares way too neatly with gross, self-pitying MRA bullshit.

video seems to enact this, with the lovely toybox image of the pretty ballerina suckering innocent boys into a depiction of love as a deathmatch. in the end, with our face-painted protagonist bloodied in defeat, she readies her trap for a new victim. "altar boys, altar boys, we're the thing that love destroys." fuck off.

deliberately clunky, needlessly arty, (contenderizer), Saturday, 24 January 2015 21:00 (three years ago) Permalink

that strain in emo is why i welcome the jocky qualities in fob discussed above: the wentzvoice never lacks selfconfidence and is more rueful than angry about relationship fuckups. it fetishizes the mutual violence in love (that video misses the mutual part) which is prob unhealthy in a rocknroll tradition of unhealthiness but not necc misog imo, and also not incompatible with having a good time. in comparison something like dashboard often sounds to me like the underground man w a guitar: toxically uncomfortable with himself. (i don't know dashboard v well maybe this is unfair.) i was going to say fob's objectification/essentialization of girlz is more like mick jagger's but then i thought nah there's nothing even as nasty as "stupid girl" or "back street girl" or even as outright domineering as "under my thumb" that i can think of in their catalog. they're more like an entire band of "bitch".

difficult listening hour, Saturday, 24 January 2015 21:23 (three years ago) Permalink

i dunno, I always get the impression that the FOB narrative character is suffering and kinda loves it, there's a masochistic quality which is threaded by the (sometimes explicit, sometimes implied) awareness that he has also made her/you suffer as well and so at some level has decided he deserves the punishment.

I don't think this is healthy or admirable at all but it seems to me to be quite different from MRA bullshit.

Tim F, Saturday, 24 January 2015 22:07 (three years ago) Permalink

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/01/arts/music/fall-out-boy-on-the-new-album-american-beauty-american-psycho.html?ref=music

Pete, you wrote recently, “Rock should not be relegated to a quaint little corner of Guitar Center for dads to find.” How do you get kids interested again?

Wentz The only way to do it is for kids to be able to see bands that are playing in arenas and amphitheaters that also have current songs being played on the radio. I can think of 10 bands that can sell out arenas, but I’m not sure if kids are buying their music. The future of rock is going to come from kids that listen to Skrillex and to Kanye West. Hopefully they also listen to Fall Out Boy or bands that are playing instruments as well.

Where do you go online to find new music?

Wentz You know how when you were into punk rock you would look at a band’s “thank you” list, and that’s how you would find new bands? The Internet version of that is like, “Who does this person follow on SoundCloud?” or “Who is this D.J. talking to online?” One of my favorite songs of last year was iLoveMakonnen’s “Tuesday,” and I followed it down this rabbit hole to this other remix he did [for “Down 4 So Long”]. Ezra [Koenig] from Vampire Weekend does a verse on it that’s probably one of the funniest and best verses that I’ve heard recently.
