Gee whiz it's time for the Stax poll results! [2nd attempt]

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/22709551/Rufus+Thomas+rufus_thomas1_0.jpg

In the end we only got 10 ballots, so I'll do the rollout fairly quickly. For the main tracks poll I'll do a top 30, for the subpolls I'm just going to list all the albums/tracks that got votes.

having nunavut (seandalai), Friday, 27 September 2013 00:13 (twelve years ago)

woohoo! shame the turnout wasn't stronger but thanks again for doing this!

Jean-Claude Brand Ambassador (some dude), Friday, 27 September 2013 00:14 (twelve years ago)

Albums first!

http://i.imgur.com/05XTbOY.jpg

Otis Redding - Otis Blue (Volt, 1965)
Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul (Enterprise, 1969)
Soul Children - Friction (Stax, 1974)
Booker T and the MGs - Green Onions (Stax, 1962)
Shirley Brown - Woman to Woman (Truth, 1974)
Soul Children - Soul Children (Stax, 1969)
Lou Bond - Lou Bond (We Produce, 1974)
Otis Redding - Dictionary of Soul (Volt, 1966)
Isaac Hayes - Black Moses (Enterprise, 1971)
Margie Joseph - Makes a New Impression (Volt, 1970)
Isaac Hayes - Shaft (Enterprise, 1971)
Eddie Floyd - Soul Street (Stax, 1974)
Booker T and the MGs - In the Christmas Spirit (Stax, 1967)

The list is in order but as there were just three album ballots I'm not giving point totals - only Otis Blue and Hot Buttered Soul got more than one vote.

Looks like 1974 was a good year for album releases, even as the company was sinking...

having nunavut (seandalai), Friday, 27 September 2013 00:16 (twelve years ago)

On to the cover/sample subpoll...again we got three ballots and these were the songs on those ballots:

Aretha Franklin - Respect (1967)
Tricky - Hell is Round the Corner (1995)
Geto Boys - Mind Playing Tricks On Me (1991)
Fabulous Thunderbirds - Wrap It Up (1986)
Brian Eno - You Don't Miss Your Water (1988)
Salt-n-Pepa/En Vogue - Whatta Man (1993)
Jay-Z - Reservoir Dogs (1998)
Otis Redding - You Don't Miss Your Water (1965)
Elvis Costello - I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down (1980)
Billy Idol - To Be A Lover (1986)
Amerie - Gotta Work (2007)

having nunavut (seandalai), Friday, 27 September 2013 00:17 (twelve years ago)

haha it's fun to see the weird-ass songs i picked linked there

Jean-Claude Brand Ambassador (some dude), Friday, 27 September 2013 00:34 (twelve years ago)

Billy Idol was a surprise, to be sure.

having nunavut (seandalai), Friday, 27 September 2013 01:03 (twelve years ago)

Going to roll out a couple of tracks tonight. 126 tracks got at least one vote, but we're starting at #30:

I love the story that Otis had never heard the Rolling Stones version when he recorded his cover.

Goes without saying, but search all Otis' live performances.

^ this x1000. Probably my favorite Stax/Volt thing is Otis' Monterey performance. Every song in that set is the definitive rendition, and the band is playing some proto-Bad Brains shit.

punt cased (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 27 September 2013 02:07 (twelve years ago)

On to the cover/sample subpoll...again we got three ballots and these were the songs on those ballots:

I didn't do a covers ballot, but two of mine would've been the Jam -- "Sweet Soul Music" and "Big Bird." I didn't hear Floyd's original of the latter until maybe 20 years after hearing the Jam's.

punt cased (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 27 September 2013 02:09 (twelve years ago)

the jam covered "big bird"?!? i didn't know that!

Good start (re ##30-28)!

One thing I noticed relistening to the Stax-Volt singles box was that new acts regularly hit one out of the park with their debut for the label.

Jeff W, Friday, 27 September 2013 09:33 (twelve years ago)

I guess that might make sense in cases where new artists brought along some songs they had written and the Stax bosses could pick out the best one? (Wendy Rene springs to mind here)

beautiful!

so glad it is a winner!!

Yaaaay for Big Bird!! Hi 5 to whoever gave it the #1 spot. I had never heard that Jam cover before, but it gets to the crunchy essence of that song. Ugh I just love it.
This song always makes me laugh, and yet it's still super tight.

^ my #1.

My older brother had the American Graffiti soundtrack, and I think I must've been around 2 when I first heard this. But it's like "Happy Birthday To You," where I have no memory of it not existing, no memory of hearing it for the first time.

hopping and bopping to the krokodil rot (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 29 September 2013 15:10 (twelve years ago)

And that live version is terrifying. I love how, at 1:57, Cropper and Jackson not only don't look at each other for those accents/kicks, they're looking away from each other. Most bands would do some corny head-nod or give an "Are you ready?" look.

And at 2:54, yeah, Booker T was listening to Sun Ra.

I was trying to think of a proper adj for live Green Onions and all I could come up with was slimy . Terrifying is accurate. It starts off so simple too.

Untt (La Lechera), Sunday, 29 September 2013 15:16 (twelve years ago)

I grew up with pretty much zero awareness of Stax. I think I was about 18-19 when I learned that Stax was a thing, and at that point I can only say for sure that I had heard "Dock of the Bay", "Shaft", "Green Onions" and "Soul Limbo" (aka "the BBC cricket theme"). I guess other songs would have cropped up on TV but I didn't register them. It all changed with the cover CD on one of only two copies of Mojo I ever bought...

And the indisputable number one greatest Stax song of all time is...

Luigi Nono, le petit robot (seandalai), Sunday, 29 September 2013 15:19 (twelve years ago)

I'll admit it: not a fan of "Knock on Wood." I mean, it's okay. I did vote for "Got to Make a Comeback," and could just as easily have voted for "I've Just Been Feeling Bad." I think the Knock on Wood album cover is hilarious. You don't see many people chopping down trees in a suit.

btw I mean "slimy" in the best possible way

Movies have definitely played a huge part in how a lot of people experience Stax imo -- I have never seen Blues Brothers, but I am fully aware of its cultural impact. There was Satisfaction (which had 0 cultural impact afaict) and Shaft obvs, and has anyone mentioned The Commitments yet? I will admit to totally loving that movie in early hs. Strangely I associate it with Twin Peaks but only because I was obsessed with them at the same time.

I have never seen Blues Brothers, but I am fully aware of its cultural impact.

Their horrendous minstrel-show version of "Soul Man" was all over the goddamn radio in '78-'79. I didn't hear the original -- or even know there was an original -- until six years later. Blew my mind.

JacobSanders, Sunday, 29 September 2013 20:06 (twelve years ago)

Oran "Juice" Jones covered "In the Rain," right? Or maybe he just sampled it, I can't remember.

Oran "Juice" Jones's "The Rain" was an original from 1986, Keith Sweat covered "In The Rain" in 1987 on his debut album:

Great poll!

breastcrawl, Sunday, 29 September 2013 20:20 (twelve years ago)

I'd put them neck-and-neck singles-wise, but as far as albums go, Stax demolishes Motown. I doubt there are more than four or five solid classic Motown albums between 1962 and 1967.

xp

hopping and bopping to the krokodil rot (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 29 September 2013 20:23 (twelve years ago)

Why 1962-1967? Most of my favourite Stax albums are from after that anyway.

Luigi Nono, le petit robot (seandalai), Sunday, 29 September 2013 20:30 (twelve years ago)

I guess I was thinking about the period when the most/most filleriffic Motown albums came out, and Stax/Volt wasn't even putting out very many albums at that time, but still crushed Motown in that department.

Thanks, seandalai. This was fun.

01. Isaac Hayes - Joy
02. Linda Lyndell - What A Man
03. Isaac Hayes - Theme from 'Shaft'
04. The Emotions - Blind Alley
05. Otis Redding - Satisfaction
06. Wendy Rene - After Laughter (Comes Tears)
07. Wendy Rene - Bar-B-Q
08. Wendy Rene - Give You What I Got
09. The Mad Lads - Get Out Of My Life, Woman
10. Booker T. & The MGs - Soul Limbo
11. Ruby Johnson - When My Love Comes Down
12. William Bell - You Don't Miss Your Water
13. Rufus Thomas - The Breakdown (Pts. I & II)
14. William Bell - Marching Off To War
15. Otis Redding - I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)
16. Sam & Dave - Hold On! I'm Comin'
17. Booker T. & The MGs - Boot-leg
18. The Mad Lads - No Strings Attached
19. Mable John - Your Good Thing (Is About To End)
20. Eddie Floyd - Knock On Wood
21. The Bar Kays - Holy Ghost
22. Isaac Hayes - Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic
23. Rufus Thomas - Walking The Dog
24. Carla Thomas - Gee Whiz
25. Booker T. & The MGs - Hip Hug-Her

I built my ballot from the bottom up. I was as surprised as anyone that last person standing was "Joy". But then I thought, fair enough. Would have also liked to have given some respect to Hayes' "The Look of Love" (which is >>> his "Walk On By" IMO) but ran out of slots.

I'd urge everyone to check out the Ruby Johnson song - ridiculous that this was relegated to a B-side.

An upcoming docuseries about Stax Records, slated for a major distributor, is on the hunt for personal archival materials – photographs, tickets, ephemera, and hopefully home movies or footage. The team has mined the archives at the Stax Museum, the Withers Collection Gallery, The Hooks Brothers Collection, the Commercial Appeal, and dozens of other archives, and are now hoping to find material from Stax fans – a photo of your grandmother at an Otis Redding concert or fans lining up to meet Johnnie Taylor or the Staple Singers on tour.

The team would also be interested in photos or footage of Beale Street, blues or R&B concerts in the 1960s or 1970s, Stax Records (studio, offices, concerts, events) before the 1980s.

Anyone contributing material used in the final cut would be compensated with a licensing fee. Please reach out to the team at stax AT laylowpictures DOT com. They are hoping to have all submissions as soon as possible but with a final deadline of April 1, 2023.
