^ enlightening post (sarahell), Friday, 31 January 2014 00:29 (twelve years ago)

albums with lots of votes but only in middle of ballots do tend to beat out a few niche things with lots of enthusiasm but what can you do? Larger rollout wouldn't make that much of a difference now unlike earlier years. It's pretty hard to get fans of more niche stuff to vote as either they dislike polls or dont think it's worth voting. I suppose rolling threads make it hard for stuff to crossover unless big publications pick up on it (see deafheaven)

۩, Friday, 31 January 2014 00:30 (twelve years ago)

unless we take a cue from politicians and unite our niche votes -- like what do you all call it over there, a coalition government?

The Flaming Lips album got good reviews but I think people are just burned out on them, they've been putting out so much music recently and seem to play every single festival.

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 31 January 2014 02:01 (twelve years ago)

it wasn't that the reviews were bad; it was that they made the album seem so gloomy and uninviting that it seemed better to avoid it (come to think of it, i normally like gloomy and uninviting music, so . . . )

Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 31 January 2014 02:03 (twelve years ago)

it was a pretty cool album but i've never been a huge fan.

My (mixed) ballot:

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
Still Corners - Strange Pleasures
Veronica Falls - Waiting for Something to Happen

The Knife - Shaking the Habitual
Follakzoid - II

Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile
Donato Dozzy - Plays Bee Mask
Haim - Days Are Gone
Laura Groves - Thinking About Thinking
Pantha du Prince and the Bell Laboratory - Elements of Light

Julia Holter - Loud City Song
Josephine Foster - I'm a Dreamer
Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - Nanda Collection
Sons of Kemet - Burn
Sapphire Slows - Allegoria

Tim Hecker - Virgins
Ex-Easter Island Head - Mallet Guitars Three
Autre Ne Veut - Anxiety
Matthew Shipp - Piano Sutras
Peven Everett - King of Hearts
TM404 - TM404
Tal National - Kaani
Fire! Orchestra - Exit!
Bflecha - βeta

Matmos - The Marriage of True Minds

8/25 placed, which is about as well as I ever do. I should read The Wire, but I already knew that.

I think it's interesting that even with a bunch of additional voters, the winning album couldn't match Miguel's total from last year - there was definitely less consensus this year, though as has been said maybe Beyoncé would have emerged victorious if the album had been available earlier and more widely. No jazz placed as usual, but I strongly feel that the Matthew Shipp and Matana Roberts albums in particular are worth checking out if you have even a passing interest in the genre.

the first cologne based on a sea-captain based celebrity (seandalai), Friday, 31 January 2014 02:10 (twelve years ago)

Matthew Shipp and Matana Roberts

Shipp was my #1, and I need to give Roberts another try (the strong vocals there were a little too much for me, too classical or something, I forget really, but I have difficult with anything verging on the operatic).

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 31 January 2014 02:19 (twelve years ago)

I'm going to listen to the matthew shipp, matana roberts and pantha du prince albums based on your recommendations, seandalai. And you should read The Wire, it covers a lot of the music you like. I got a digital subscription and it's great to have access to their whole back archive; also the search function on the site they use, exacteditions.com, works well

Dan S, Friday, 31 January 2014 02:22 (twelve years ago)

I've had a subscription for ~15 years! Hence "I already knew that". Still haven't worked out the digital thing though.

Dan, looking at your ballot you might also enjoy the Ex-Easter Island Head, TM404 and Sapphire Slows albums.

Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile

what i've heard of this sounds great. seems maybe more accessible than the last one (which was also great).

xpost
seandalai, it occurred to me after I made that post that you already read it, sorry! I will check out those other artists too

Dan S, Friday, 31 January 2014 02:32 (twelve years ago)

It's less fiery for sure, and draws on some older jazz traditions than the 60s/70s canon that underpins a lot of modern "out" jazz - iirc it's a concept album about MR's grandmother, which informs the music and also provides the texts for spoken and sung pieces. This texual part is where a lot of the emotional power comes from.

I posted earlier today that I should never write about jazz, so I'll stop now.

the first cologne based on a sea-captain based celebrity (seandalai), Friday, 31 January 2014 02:36 (twelve years ago)

she's kind of free-jazz-y. there's a song on the last disc, about the african slave trade, iirc, which is stunning.

Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 31 January 2014 02:37 (twelve years ago)

I strongly feel that the Matthew Shipp and Matana Roberts albums in particular are worth checking out if you have even a passing interest in the genre.

cool, thanks for this and thanks to you & J0rdan for all your work

I stole two of these from Jordan's list of favorite electronic albums (but not without listening first).

6/25 for me. Post mine later.

Lol @ lex gloating abt Drake placing just below Jute Gyte and Stara Rzeka: those were the two albums in my top 10 I was hoping would show up in the bottom third...

groovypanda, Friday, 31 January 2014 09:22 (twelve years ago)

not true. Changing the weighting of points would be a pain tho I guess.

But the end result would be interesting.

i didn't save my ballot but i'm always surprised how low my hivemind score is given that i get 90%+ of my music recommendations from ILM

― ciderpress, Thursday, January 30, 2014 10:08 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

You were my top neighbour and I didn't bother to save my ballot either. However, I do know that I definitely would've voted for the following (bold=not placed):

100. Eleanor Friedberger - Personal Record
154. FIDLAR - FIDLAR
121. David Bowie - The Next Day
355. Bombino - Nomad

Cate Le Bon - Mug Museum
RA the Rugged Man - Legends Never Die
La Femme - Psycho Tropical Berlin
Oblivians - Desperation
Rizzle Kicks - Roaring 20s

I must have padded out my ballot with 6 others I can't remember, with 5 of these forgotten ones placing in the top 77 according to the spreadsheet.

Whats Chrome - Half Machine from the Sun? ― Drugs A. Money, Friday, January 31, 2014
Helios Creed dug up 18 "lost" Chrome tracks from the halcyon 1979-1980 period of the band, did a Kickstarter-type fund raising effort to get it mastered, mixed and pressed and it's fucking phenomenal.

Would have voted for Brandy Clark and for Marius Neset Birds, if I'd heard them in time.

mike t-diva, Friday, 31 January 2014 12:29 (twelve years ago)

The Knife - Shaking The Habitual
Graham Lambkin & Jason Lescalleet - Photographs - Mentioned this on campaigning. So sad I'm the only one who voted for this. It's an absolutely astounding album - mostly sound collages of conversations, background sounds, houses creaking, traffic, church sermons etc. Had a huge impact when I listened to it one morning in bed, then went into town and found myself suddenly acutely aware of all the sounds going on round me.
These New Puritans - Fields of Reeds
Rashad Becker - Traditional Music of Notional Species Vol 1 - One of the strangest records I've ever heard. Does what it says on the tin. Sounds like an Alan Lomax excursion to Alpha Centauri.
Autechre - Exai The ne plus ultra Autechre album. More thoughts here: http://thequietus.com/articles/11482-autechre-exai-review Interview here: http://thequietus.com/articles/13899-autechre-interview-exai-l-event
Carcass - Surgical Steel
Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires Of The City
Hacker Farm - UHF Electronic noise made by West Country rural dwellers on old junk they foudn lying around the countryside. Synths made from milk pails, drum machines made out of rusty old buckets. A keen anti-conformist reuse/recycle ethic throughout. Right up my strasse.
Floorplan - Paradise Floorplan. Fucking FLOORPLAN mate! Why does this sound so fucking good? Why wasn't it higher? Would have been great to get a bit more 'proper dance' in the top 77 rather than things like Disclosure IMO. I know a lot of people were rooting for this. Very rarely does an austere techno album sound so warm and satisfying.
Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest
When Saints Go Machine - Infinity Pool - Not as quite as good as Konkylie (but then what is? it's a perfect album). But the highs are definitely high (System Of Unlimited Love especially)
Haim - Days Are Gone
Darkthrone - The Underground Resistance - One of black metal's most extreme bands sheds its scales and goes back to a highly-entertaining crust-punk style. Just sounds like two mates having fun and making the music they love. Pleasantly surprising, especially the closer 'Leave No Cross Unturned'.
Glenn Jones - My Garden State - Gorgeous post-Fahey acoustic instrumental music. Fun to sing melody lines alogn to whilst cooking.
Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold
Laurel Halo - Chance of Rain
Hey Colossus - Cuckoo Live Life Like Cuckoo - Perhaps the most innovative UK hard rock/metal band around today. Kind of undescribable really. They mix elements of noise, industrial, metal, tribal drumming and other styles but the only thing I can compare this to is Ministry's Psalm 69. Check out the stunning video for English Flesh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asuV78rSNgk
DJ Rashad - Double Cup
Matmos - The Marriage of True Minds
Deafheaven-Sunbather
Brendan Canning - You Gots 2 Chill More Post-Fahey niceties. I wouldn't call this particularly astounding but as the title suggests, it was a top chilling out album for me.
FIDLAR - FIDLAR - Goofy hilarious garage rock. Super fun.
Future of the Left - How to Stop Your Brain in an Accident - Brazen, pissed off, Welsh rockers release brilliant fuck you to the music and entertainment industry with this largely DIY release.
Jute Gyte - Discontinuities Alt-tonal black metal. Seriously messed up.
Iron and Wine - Ghost on Ghost Forgot I voted for this. Not his best in retrospect but contained a good few moments that make it worthwhile.

|$̲̅(̲̅ιοο̲̅)̲̅$̲̅| (gr8080), Friday, 31 January 2014 21:27 (twelve years ago)

lol imago I noticed you and I were closest neighbors, my ballot probably has almost as much in common with EZ's though. Me and him have been talking on the reg and he kinda had a big impact on what I listened to this year...

I got blood sausage award on the traxx poll and that was kind of my m.o. this year, for lack of any real time to explore records: I just kind of kept tabs on the time travel thread and checked out what my friends were telling me about, which is probably why my ballot was so disjointed this year. Ice Cream Everyday for instance was a last minute addition from listening to it once after reading some dude's EOY blog. I had a couple other sources besides ILX but for the most part I did not read much from the body of pop music crit this year...

Drugs A. Money, Friday, 31 January 2014 21:35 (twelve years ago)

Ice Cream Everyday is as I said upthread absolutely goddamn fucking incredible and even though there's been some great soul/r&b this year it dwarfs everything else I've heard (Monae thus far closest to matching it, K Michelle not bad either) - it's a fucking fabulous work of musical art let alone a great pop album. I think it's maybe the single album from 2013 ILM can all get behind with no exceptions.

THAT SAID, I've just started the Dawn Richards and so far it's really great :D

141 Jute Gyte - Discontinuities 142 drake - nothing was the same (imago), Friday, 31 January 2014 21:37 (twelve years ago)

Goldenheart has drawn the most "what is this, it's really good" inquiries of everything I've played in the past year

SHAUN (DJP), Friday, 31 January 2014 21:41 (twelve years ago)

Jade Alston album was way cool: the first half was solid, almost business as usual but then the last four songs were just, like, total knockouts!

Goldenheart was okay, it's probably in my top 40 but it seemed a bit of a retread of Armor On to me. THAT album (actually EP) is def one of the best of the decade thus far, and feels v archetypal, elemental even, to me (tho I suppose Telltale Heart, which I've only listened to once, is prob the true archetype)

Drugs A. Money, Friday, 31 January 2014 21:42 (twelve years ago)

I didn't dig the Larrieux track that placed on the tracks polls - I may try another seeing as everyone's raving about her, but it just didn't click for me.

emil.y, Friday, 31 January 2014 21:43 (twelve years ago)

Give the album a start-to-finish go, it's seriously worth it

141 Jute Gyte - Discontinuities 142 drake - nothing was the same (imago), Friday, 31 January 2014 21:44 (twelve years ago)

I said this on the other thread, too, but something happened with Armor On, particularly 'Bombs', a few months ago, where I went from handwavey whatevers to just repeated plays over and over again. No idea what spurred that or where it came from, but... yeah. Bloody great.

this is like J0n Abb3y stuff that I tend to find overly precious and restrained. I've sat through a lot of music that has this aesthetic, or is along the lines of what these dudes do. I don't doubt it does what it does better than most music that is attempting the same thing(s). ... Hell, maybe I will give this a try after my Kanye listening marathon.

Great ballot, Drugs A. Money. And not just because of similarities - the stuff we don't share was ace, too.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 1 February 2014 00:31 (twelve years ago)

Keep meaning to listen to it cos truly i <3 the Shadow Ring

Did you hear this year's Call Back The Giants record at all?

ineloquentwow (Craigo Boingo), Saturday, 1 February 2014 00:37 (twelve years ago)

Alla just kind of slid off the end of my ballot at some point. Sorry. :(

raggett neds of your summer dress (The Reverend), Saturday, 1 February 2014 00:42 (twelve years ago)

I think more people would like that record if they heard it! Small timey Chicago r&b/??? outfit doesn't get a lot of words/screen inches ime. It was good!

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Saturday, 1 February 2014 00:54 (twelve years ago)

I liked their weird tropicalia phase a little better than this one, but I think this one has more crossover appeal.
I also feel like Drag City albums don't have a chance when spotify is the way most people listen to new/unfamiliar stuff. I voted for three albums on DC and none of them made a peep on the poll.

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Saturday, 1 February 2014 00:56 (twelve years ago)

Sarahell, re photographs, i'm obviously not as acquainted with music like this but for me it was a joy and a pleasure.

doglato dozzy (dog latin), Saturday, 1 February 2014 00:57 (twelve years ago)

I really have to ~get involved~ next year, going through now I'm seeing lots of albums I really liked and feel could have had a respectable top 150 showing not even nominated - Sachiko, Morphosis, Jenny Hval, The Pastels, would Peter Gordon & Factory Floor have been eligible? - and many others I could have pushed up a bit languishing in the deep 100s. I guess I assumed I was one enough with the ILM hivemind that my own take didn't make much difference.

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 1 February 2014 01:08 (twelve years ago)

What us the time travel thread about? I feel like I ought to know

doglato dozzy (dog latin), Saturday, 1 February 2014 01:12 (twelve years ago)

Time travel thread is about time travel. And whatever those of us who hang out there happen to think is worth posting. You'd enjoy it, I think.

the first cologne based on a sea-captain based celebrity (seandalai), Saturday, 1 February 2014 01:17 (twelve years ago)

Merdeyeux you should totally have voted! "Beachcombing" was the one track I couldn't quite will into the top 77 on my own.

the first cologne based on a sea-captain based celebrity (seandalai), Saturday, 1 February 2014 01:18 (twelve years ago)

oh I'd probably have voted for 'C Side' instead so even hypothetically vote-splitting would have left us heartbroken.

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 1 February 2014 01:20 (twelve years ago)

I don't know anything about time travel unless you got some balloons or summin?

doglato dozzy (dog latin), Saturday, 1 February 2014 01:37 (twelve years ago)

Time travel is kind of rolling weirdo avantgarde stuff that kinda falls thru the cracks. Mostly presided over by imago, sarahell, Edward III, and Hellhouse

Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 1 February 2014 02:01 (twelve years ago)

LL onlt thing on Drag City I listened to this year wz Howling Hex but Cave and that Dead C/Rangda split both sound like theyd be awesome and they're def high on my catch-up list

Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 1 February 2014 02:03 (twelve years ago)

Will post about Alla on my next break

Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 1 February 2014 02:04 (twelve years ago)

Not just though, I post random pop there sometimes. Always felt inclusivity was part of the founding vision xp

the first cologne based on a sea-captain based celebrity (seandalai), Saturday, 1 February 2014 02:06 (twelve years ago)

Oh I nearly a started a rolling avant weirdo thread but I had a feeling it existed but couldn't find it. You avant weirdos need to get more accessible or else how the heck am I gonna find you??

doglato dozzy (dog latin), Saturday, 1 February 2014 02:07 (twelve years ago)

If I'd got round to nomming The Pastels would've been my number two vote.

ineloquentwow (Craigo Boingo), Saturday, 1 February 2014 03:11 (twelve years ago)

I need to give that Troller album a listen here soon

I've yet to hear the first Alla album but from what I've gathered the references are Tropicalia, Krautrock, and even stuff like Tuxedomoon, and when I listen to FTD that's what I hear: a band from a spacey esoteric background immersing themselves in the surfaces and textures of modern R&B. It's almost like an Amon Duul II album but drawing on stuff like Katy B, Dawn Richard, and Sade instead of like, Jefferson Airplane and the Velvets and the Incredible String Band. And for a hopeless if not shameless rockist who was starting to hear the possibilities of modern pop and techno production, it came at exactly the right time. I think most of the R&B fans round here tend to be songwriting absolutists so in many ways like the Clipping album this kind of fit uncomfortably between two camps. But there was not another album this year I've listened to as much...

like helen money?

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Saturday, 1 February 2014 04:47 (twelve years ago)

Allá album is 1) something I was completely ignorant of and 2) pretty amazing. I think this is a legit authorized download link, so (unless it isn't) check it out here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/f2upt482897oys6/%23feedthedragon%20volume%20one.zip

I'm pretty sure I'm the one who nominated the La Big Vic album, so I should have voted for that too.

fffv, Saturday, 1 February 2014 05:34 (twelve years ago)

Haha nominations thread was the first inkling I had that La Big Vic had an album out this year

Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 1 February 2014 07:07 (twelve years ago)

...so thanks!

Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 1 February 2014 07:08 (twelve years ago)

this post is still messin with my head. i mean, i know why you used those two albums to gloat @ drake but what are you saying????

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 9 February 2014 07:28 (twelve years ago)

I think he's just saying that a huge blockbuster album that placed high on a lot of critics's lists was way down with some obscure records in this poll

scott c-word (some dude), Sunday, 9 February 2014 15:04 (twelve years ago)

Ok right on.

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 9 February 2014 19:43 (twelve years ago)

no reason to use those albums apart from they were near drake in the results, i'd never heard of either and they SOUNDED obscure, no idea what/who they even are and no shade at them intended

lex pretend, Sunday, 9 February 2014 21:00 (twelve years ago)

K, just the way you singled them out felt like you knew of them and were wielding them as shorthand for some context that I had no access to...
