I can see why they'd appeal in northern Germany and the older industrialised parts, I mean they do sound like some ranty Dutch post-punk thing at times.

Saw them last year with no idea what to expect. Enjoyed it fine, bought the album expecting to play it only a couple of times and couldn't stop listening to it. Found the guy at the back (who touched the laptop a grand total of TWICE) to be the focus of attention as basically ge just nodded his head and swigged from his can, smiling sometimes when it got to a bit he remembered he liked.

Pitman and The Fall are I guess the touchstones, but I've been describing them to other people as if The Streets were a bitter middle aged bloke from the North who grew up with post punk.

I also love how inept that bit of drum programming is on Urine Mate.

Yeah, they do credit early Streets as an influence - Wu-Tang too, and it was Jason who got me into Roc Marciano - but they claim not to have heard much Fall or John Cooper Clarke, despite the constant comparisons.

'Double Diamond' is the major Skinner-y one iirc. don't specifically get that vibe from much else of theirs

his flow has rhythmic similarities to Skinner sometimes i think, but that and the use of everyday phrases/observations that rarely make it into pop music are the only notable connections

the problem with 'fall-esque' is that if it isn't a shorthand for the early dragnet-hex clackety fall sound it's usually referring to the least interesting aspects of the fall, none of the copyists get or reinvisage the unhomely or obssesive qualities*, they merely facsimilie the threat but more in the to-women-and-children sense than the vindictive intelligence

the surrender of the claims to sublimity is part of the point/appeal tho, no? it's the 'prophetic' part of NV's earlier formula - the surly peasant, automatically suspicious of money, authority and those who like to be sold things, unseduceable must exclude art and the sublime as part of that suspicion, they do not view the pastoral, they are *in* it. that is also the problem, as you say: as a vision it becomes tiring long-term, reductive and exclusive of change - the no nonsense insolence becomes authoritarian conservatism as it gets old.

MES as a person can exemplify this, and i find the latter-day cultism surrounding him a bit nauseating. he's saved personally by his absolute devotion to art, and in The Fall the essential counterbalance to the surly indifference to pleasure ('to please is the curse, and worse') is Art, Mysticism and the sublime, to which they are open. In this respect they represent a form of satire - gnostically excoriating and revelling in the material world to reveal the spiritual sublime. (The spiritual counterweight to the surly peasant's suspicion is a credulity towards heretical gnosticism and non-conformism). Half Man Half Biscuit manage it with genuine pastoral longing and a genius for the cultural impedimenta beyond and below outside irritation at the supermarket.

But basically I'm a sucker for English nobheadism and enjoy it more or less automatically (crap dance is a golden place for this) - the addition of dirty bass and drums, and mocking guitar, just helps.

SM do feel a bit antiquated tho - not that I mind particularly. the JCCisms, the grubby post punk musical lumbering belie the 'mod'. after reading that excellent Ian Penman LRB article on mod, was wondering what foreign elements wd constitute contemporary mod - what would be the foreign element, fashion lodestones, the cultural frontiers. ended making up something out of a ragbag of african dance like the Lapaz Toyota video, soviet satellite states (your sevastopol comment, nakh), the angular faces and baroque lines of a wyndham lewis portrait. it wouldn't look much like Sleaford Mods other than its oppositional razor to the throat of hipster fogeyism and the frigid abnegation of scandi-porn.

nakh's point about suspension of disbelief is v. on point tho - to contemplate the authenticity of the presentation is to pop the bubble immediately - hence my original caveat about "until we fall out" - but charlatanism is an acceptable angle of the English scene too as long as you keep your art project roots hid - incidentally, Earl Brutus seem to never manage this to me, they are a much archer proposition than Sleaford

i like emily's post. art project or not, they kind of reframe northern working class rock in a way they makes the likes of oasis look the height of pretension, and not by dumbing down either, but the sense they give you of being knee-deep in all the shit of their native culture, suckered onto the local substrate like limpets stuck to the bottom of a dirty pub ashtray. they have this great tension too between being fucked-up yet still vital, deeply bored but still awake and alert. not that any of this is exclusive to them mind you.

feel like the ilx response to them is prob complicated because they answer a bit too perfectly to the Real England thing (which thread is always itself a bit complicated)

xpost I commissioned the Guardian article. And, yes, it was a way to shoehorn a load of bands I was interested in into one piece that would get way more play and attention than single pieces about any of them would. In fact, not sure I could have got single pieces about any of them into the paper.

But it was a direct reaction to the fact that for two or three years I'd barely heard a new "rock" band who didn't sound like gimley eyed careerists, and suddenly there seemed to be a rush of new bands who didn't sound like 6 Music airplay was the key thing on their mind. I know such bands have always been around, but for the first time in ages people outside the underground seem to be talking about them …

It seems like SM's are pretty Deep Nottingham as emil.y's post attests, but on that archetypal level they feel v familiar. mb I wish they felt less familiar. "suspension of disbelief" is kind of curious in this context (identification). the problem isn't that the common ground invoked is imaginary, it's Real, observational, and necessarily specific. it's just that the Realness of the surly-peasant-totems - JSA, the A15, shoplifting in lidl, whatever - feels like a kind of empty materialism. it's not reflexive. it's a collection of v recognisable quotidian pains and symbols the same as a michael mcintyre routine. mb not fair to include the afrikan boy track, that's a one off. not familiar enough w/ the fall to confidently agree w/ fizzles that they bring a spiritual/sublime counterbalance to this but it sounds plausible.

ended up snaffling woof's spare ticket, which led to a slightly odd evening of going to the first half of what I was originally doing - watching Andreas Staier on fortepiano at the Wigmore Hall doing Schubert moments musicaux, Schumann fantasiestücke (after ETA Hoffman), and some Beethoven bagatelles. This was a remarkable, slightly more forceful set of interpretations than you'll hear in other performances. I find the Fantasiestücke (Op 12) slightly inscrutable, but the intricacy and lyricism of the Schubert pieces, makes you feel like you're looking into a momentary scene in which the detail is revelatory and meaningful - like a piece of lyrical memory that stays with you forever despite its slightness. also by fuck it makes you want to be in Vienna.

then hotfooted it to the 100 Club and watched Sudden Infant, Consumer Electronics and Seaford Mods - all of whom were very good I thought. Inventive belligerence of different types, with some tasty crowd antagonism on the part of Consumer Electronics. Not a huge amount of flexibility in the SM approach, but when Jason's going full whack it's very entertaining and generally bucks up the spirit.

Well I wouldn't necessarily say they are talking shit but anyhow I find this kind of discussion and topic - whether I agree with it or not - more interesting than say who will be the next host of XFactor or what the latest lounge suite colour might be. I like these guys, but this Guardian rant isn't saying anything more than 'commercial music is shit nowadays'. Jaded middle-aged punker types have been saying exactly this for decades. His argument runs into problems in that he gives no back-up examples.
By 'Samey Winehouse', I assume he's talking about a particular brand of UK popstar, the the kind who makes appearances on Saturday Kitchen, gets nominated for a Brit Award and is marketed to people who like Amy/Adele but ultimately lacks the ingredient that made these unique. By 'rock'n'roll', I assume he means a particular brand of swaggering post-Britpop UK rock, the kind the NME and the rest of the music industry have been hanging their hopes on since at least 1998. This is what I assume he's saying. It's all an assumption. But because he mentions, like, three examples, one of whom are Scouting For Girls (who haven't released anything since 2012), his attacks come off as arbitrary and not a little bit rockist in places.
Fact is, I am also going to assume his argument comes from the right place. I'm inclined to agree there's been an ongoing and growing problem with the UK music industry in the notable lack of risk-taking since the economic collapse. This has led to a lot of bland, easily categorisable music being pushed to wide customer niches - you go in the Razorlight box; you go in the Dizzee Rascal box; you go in the Adele box etc... Careers being built on the backs of others. In some ways it's nothing new - this is marketing after all. But as I think someone a while back on ILM said, we're a far cry away from the days when a modestly successful UK pop-rock band like XTC could be granted the studio time to record a '60s psych-influenced vanity spin-off project.
It's not like the US. You guys still have GOOD 'rock' bands, many of whom get decent coverage around the world, play cool festivals and don't just sound like staid cut'n'pastes of something that was popular 15-20 years ago. That's not to say the UK doesn't have exciting bands who do sound unique, fresh, innovative or exciting. Save just a handful of exceptions, the majority are touring a batch of clapped-out toilets in commuter towns trying to scrape a living off selling a batch of handpressed CD-Rs. They're not being interviewed by Pitchfork. They're not playing Coachella. They're not even playing Reading Festival or appearing on Saturday Kitchen because they haven't got a record label. While the music media bemoans the death of Britpop, it forgets the real reason UK music felt so alive and fertile at that time: chances were being taken on acts like Portishead, Aphex Twin, Tricky, the Chemical Brothers, Radiohead, Suede, Massive Attack and countless others. I can't even imagine a band like the Manic Street Preachers getting as popular now as they did in the 1990s. The majors wouldn't sign them and the indies just don't have the platform they might once have, and that's all down to money I guess.
