for whatever it's worth, Real & True isn't on the tracklist that came out in the past day or two, and Sh!t is a bonus track. Karate Chop, too.

i like having Pluto OG rather than Pluto 3D, so i may just go non-deluxe on this one.

I loved Move That Dope at first because of the great beat but over time Future is the only rapper I want to listen to over it and so I end up not playing it at all. I definitely prefer Real and True. Emo Future >*
I'd probably play MTD a lot more if it was only Future and Casino. These other guys are only added so that square people will like it.

i mean he cut "Real And True" from the tracklist, which is good, hopefully he's got some more melodic songs taking its place. i mean that whole interview that got him in trouble w/ Drake last year was about how much his album is going to make you "feel" something, i doubt he'd abandon that after "Turn On The Lights" and "Neva End" were the biggest radio hits on the first album.

Future never really explains things clearly in interviews even when he's asked to clarify earlier statements, but i'm pretty sure what he's saying happened is: Detail and Beyonce made "Drunk In Love," Detail played it for Future and they wrote "Good Morning" as a revision of it to pitch to B, but then Future liked the song enough that he was thinking of keeping it for Honest, and then she dropped the album w/ the original "Drunk" (possibly w/o ever hearing the Future track), so he decided it couldn't be on his album but he wanted people to hear it anyway.

I met Future at a listening session a few weeks ago and asked him about this. It turns out Casino wasn’t supposed to be on either of these records initially but he went rogue and snuck his vocals onto Future’s Pro Tools sessions. Future then found the verses when it was time to send them out to be mastered and decided to leave them on the street versions as a way to boost his brother’s profile. He assured me that Casino’s “Move That Dope” verse will appear on the album.

Casino is just plain bad on "Karate Chop", and in the end his presence on that record ended up being overshadowed by the controversy with the Lil Wayne remix

Also, I can't help but recall a similar incident with Cyhi the Prynce of GOOD Music, who did pretty much the exact same thing by sneaking his verse onto "So Appalled" while Kanye was asleep in the studio

it's like the pinnacle of everything he's about/done. i haven't felt any of his songs like that, except maybe Jealous, My and First Class Flights. Move That Dope has grown on me, but not monumentally

Looks like tour dates, good news that he's finally headlining though.

He was okay at best when opening for Drake (at least when compared to Miguel and the headliner, who just puts on a better show than Future, #honest), so I'm still contemplating whether to see him headline when he comes to town.

I think my shipper tendencies for Future/Ciara and Kimye are clouding my judgment because I actually really like this track (and I seem to be the only one).

That actually sounds nice to me, but I like small-picture rap albums. I'm tiring of albums that are big linear narratives (where half the story is told through skits and voiceovers). Just give me some good tracks, as little filler as possible and nothing that pulls me out of the album and I'm totally happy

there are ways to make an artistic "leap" with an album w/o heralding it as some cinematic experience... take care and deeper than rap are good recent examples. even something like tha carter II, as well.

I overstated the prevalence of single-narrative albums, but a lot of young rappers are going for this kind of message storytelling on a smaller scale right now. There's a lot of it in most of the recent TDE releases, Schoolboy Q and Isaiah Rashah, and in Chance the Rapper and Childish Gambino and all those guys. Lots of those acts are doing this stuff well, obviously, but right now a lot of acts seem invested in making "important" rap albums when making a really good one is an equally admirable feat imo

i don't particularly like the schoolboy album to me but i don't see how that one fits in... chance either

i mean they're long and i guess ambitious in a sense but i'd rather that than 12 songs personally

the andre song is good but... weird. not aesthetically, it just comes from a weird place. andre is good on the hook at least. i'm not sure anyone turned off by his recent verses is gonna find much to turn around on.

yeah I'm having difficulty recalling a verse from him after 2007 that I've dug. Well "Royal Flush" and the C4 interlude were cool actually

but the good thing is that it doesn't have the feel of ***NEW ANDRE 3000*** verse where he rambles for like 90 seconds straight

The crux of the Schoolboy album is a two-song message track about drug abuse, "Prescription/Oxymoron," clearly modeled after "Good Kid"/"Maad City." It's like he condensed the Danny Brown album into 7 minutes. Feels like a lot of post-GKMC albums really lean hard on a thesis.

snippets have totally deflated my anticipation for this album. Literally sounds like 2 dope songs on the whole thing, possibly 3 because I can't really tell what the Drake feature's like from the clip. Dude's debut has some stuff that's a step below but I can pretty much play the whole thing bar "Tony Montana"

on the stream they sent me (which had "special" -- which is amazing -- and "benz friends") "never satisfied" also fades out before the 2 min mark

Gah, not knowing what the "right" version of an album is drives me nuts. I always wonder how many album reviews are written around early or incomplete versions of an LP, or leaks with patent flaws or terrible sound or whatever

i feel like that used to happen more often back in the day, stuff like The Source's early review of Nas's I Am, than it does now in the internet era when it's pretty easy to tell if a tracklist hasn't been finalized yet and you don't need a long lead time to get a timely review out there

I feel like with the Internet what gets reviewed is the first thing that leaks, and often that first leak isn't all that good. A few years ago everybody reviewed a version of Take Care that was missing a song, because that was what they had. Then last year everybody reviewed a version of NWTS with atrocious sound. For a lot of people, critics and listeners, that crappy leak will be their only exposure to that album

i remember American Gangster leaked missing 1 or 2 songs and i wrote a whole article about it based on that and then finally the day of my deadline the last bit of the album surfaced and i was so relieved i could make some small adjustments.

"Benz Friends" Andre verse is pretty eh

Kinda disappointed with this really. The first track really made me sit up and take notice, and the run of ballads from the title track onwards is great but the rest if kind of a slog. Feel like he got the balance wrong with this one because his bangers are totally generic whereas his emo candyfloss space ballads sound like no-one else.

That triplet flow he uses feel more and more like a lazy default the more you hear it as well.

Don't get the dislike for the Pusha verse in this thread. a couple parts I can see but as a whole it's straight

this album has some really incredible moments and i wish it had been tightened up just a little more - feel like i shouldn't have to be cherrypicking from it or gritting my teeth through kanye or pusha

the andré track is actually really unexpectedly great though! "look ahead", "i be u", "special", "side effects" all brilliant. i never thought "sh!t" was more than a minor pleasure but it turns out i forgot what a booming entrance it makes

"look ahead" kinda gives me "power" vibes?? in a good way

the first album was so in the synthed out mike will zone it had a real sense cohesion and culture, this one sounds way more general and cosmopolitan, feels a lil unfocused, lots of samples, a bunch of features from regular ass rappers that dont really fit imo, idk

futures whole voice and mode on this one feels really tuned up too, he was more mellow last time, thats not a judgement tho feelin the new places hes going with his voice

yeah that's kind of what makes its highs so high and its missteps so irritating

mike will only has 3 tracks on this i feel like we might look back on 'honest' as one of the big signals that metro boomin has sort of passed him up as atlanta's hottest rap producer (pop/r&b a diff story)

as much as i love the "Honest" and "The Blanguage" beats, that seems really premature, i don't see it for him like that yet. Mike Will has been kinda sorta shooting blanks for a minute, though.

I still say that the Move That Dope beat is vicious. Put some other non-song-ruining guests on there (Tip, Kendrick, even Yo Gotti or the Gucci Mane) and the song would have blown up massively. I still say that the Move That Dope beat is vicious. Put some other non-song-ruining guests on there (Tip, Kendrick, even Yo Gotti or the Gucci Mane) and the song would have blown up massively. Pusha was the wrong call, Pharrell's verse is dope but weird and Casino, as much as I love him, doesn't help either.

yeah this is right, the beat and hook still elevate it enough but that's despite the verses (i like pharrell, casino is better than he's credited for but only in terms of energy, future is only adequate, pusha is horrible). i assume remixes might solve this for us in the end

this album ended up being really underrated just cause it's not quite as good as Pluto (which it's not like that album was ever super-consistent anyway, as good as the best tracks are) and people are quick to throw away their toys

i'm an obsessive relistener on both albums and pluto is WAY better than honest

feel like honest besides the inconsistent quality is also inconsistent sound/vibe wise it just doesnt hold together that good the production is super varied and theres a shit ton of guest verses that dont really flow (my biggest complaint tbh) the jams are extremely jammy but it just doesnt produce a enveloping cohesive experience like pluto did imho but pluto is like my fav album

also cant really stand futures inspirational success mode which is like .33 of the thing, like i can tell he really feels it which is cool but i do not

read him saying that getting all the celebrity guest verses lined up for this was a huge pain in the ass so maybe hell cut that shit out next time

Hardly, this is the first time an album's release has lined up w/ peak buzz in what feels like years....

I guess I haven't been paying attention, but I'm not really seeing the buzz. At least in terms of radio play, he seems miles away from peak buzz

yeah this album is gonna do big numbers. the 2 biggest radio songs from his recent mixtapes ("Commas" and "Real Sisters") are on it and his fanbase is way more fervent than the "oh, he's really good at hooks" kind of casual embrace he had before.

Man I feel out of it. But good for him. I like that in 2015 going the J. Cole route (not a diss) could work for a guy like Future.

'march madness' is probably the poppiest of the songs on the three mixtapes (the holy trinity as it were)

all these tapes are full of oddly engaging songs that take time to reveal themselves

Honest is such a weird blip on the radar for him now. Imo if he'd just done some hardcore editing/resequencing before putting it out it'd hold up a lot better and his hot streak would seem even more *fire emoji*

to me march madness is more a perfect album track ... the 'hook' as it were is in the melodic intricacies of the beat meshing w/ his meaningfulcore lyrics/emoting...."Commas" feels like the biggest Single-single but it's also not a perfect iteration of what he sounds like now IMO...its success set the table for further artistic explorations but I don't think he's yet released the HIT that epitomizes his current sound

I meant it's not up to the caliber of his other albums. In both quality and sound, it feels like a mixtape to me.

It's got a sustained vibe, and I appreciate that. Honest was a lot more scattershot, and maybe even jumbled, but song for song it was so much better than this one

the thing the pre/post narratives seem to fatally downplay is that he was above all a great, singular romantic; it makes the contrast starker, and the question whether he expresses himself as numb depresso street addict as fully. idc much tho tbh

monster contains it's fair share of, like, songs that might be 'pop'

56 nights and ds2 are grim throughout

i would pay for a drake-less edit of that one song

i'm a big stan for "Loveeeeeee Song" Future but Honest didn't even that spot all that well and the production often sounded ill-fitting or weirdly chintzy. the Amadou & Mariam sample, even the "Benz Friends" beat was not really suited to Future that well. DS2 just sounds like all the producers he has real chemistry with trying to make the biggest nastiest beats they've ever made.

ditto. the latter version just seems like he cant ever be romantic without some sort of bro-ish clause that keeps his guard up. i dont find this 'fascinating conflict' all that fascinating, more bothersome.

Been a minute since I listened to it, but there's a lot I like about Pluto that isn't present at all here. Not that it would necessarily matter, just that it's consistently solid, not great? idk, just keep hearing that dude's at his creative peak & feel like I'm missing something, or maybe just like(d) his music for different reasons

I think there can be different reasons for liking Future at different points in his career. I do miss a clear successor to My Savages and Jus Like Bruddas on here, as that where his emotive powers have gone post the Ciara breakup, when romantic love no longer seemed an lotion. A Hardly or Codeine Crazy would be nice too. However, as deej rightly points out, every bit of this seems to be emotionally charged in ways the earlier stuff wasn't, as if all this pain and confusion and regret and anger somehow got more focused once he let go of the idea of writing proper songs.

I think this is the best stuff he's released so far. I really enjoy the overall mood, driving at night listening to it in San Antonio was nice.

i actually listened to that long ass interview on the spotify version on the train home today. iirc he says he was pissed off that him & mike will were cut out of ciara's album? he def comes across like he blames the lukewarm reception of honest on that relationship.

best thing about the interview was that it made me go and listen to 'racks' again which i'd unfortunately forgotten about

I never knew Honest was ill thought of, I love at least 85% of it.

I do like the kind of pained sound of some later songs here, "Slave Master," "Blood on the Money," "Kno the Meaning" and the percocet one
