All I can say about Bush is I didn't vote for him. My candidate didn't get in. However, I will not loose any sleep if Saddam dies and there's one less sadistic dictator in the world. France and Germany may cry when they find they have to get their oil from a different dictator now , but I'm sure they will adjust. I doubt if I will be voting for Bush in '04, because for the one point I actually agree with him on, that being ridding the world of a dictator who has total disregard for the lives of his own people, there are about a hundred things I disagree with him on.

I've been bitching at my friends for years, telling them to vote. Now they are all hysterical that Bush might put us in a state of war. Not one of my friends went and voted against Bush in the last election because they were "too busy". I wonder how many other people here protesting never voted.

As for you people in other countries, I can only pray that whatever path my nation's leader chooses to pursue, any repercusions of it do not effect you.

Most people who are against the war hold that stance precisely because they want their fellow citizens to return to the US unharmed. It's interesting that this is the first time in the history of war protest in America that people are taking to putting their bodily fluids on the steps of our government buildings. This sounds like the acts of people suffering from desperation and inability to express themselves in any other way. Is this what civil disobediance has come to represent? Take a look back at every war that's ever happened in the US, and you will find that opposition to it has always been strong. It's healthy, and there's nothing wrong with it. However, when people's protesting begins to endanger the lives of people within in this country, that's when you are going to have not only the government but everyday people on your ass. You are jeopardizing the lives of people within this country in your obscene attempts to get your voice heard, and people are going to look harshly on you for it. FIND A MORE EFFECTIVE WAY TO MAKE YOURSELF HEARD. GET INTO POLITICS. FORM A NEW POLITICAL PARTY AND TAKE OVER THE SYSTEM. HAVE A PEACE RALLY IN THE PARK. Don't just make matters worse for everybody. When I say endangering people in this country, I mean by blocking to roads so ambulances and fire trucks can't get thru... and what about that poor fucking kid who's sick and now has to wait another 5 months to get into a hospital because the protesters were blocking the building that day? I'm just really concerned about all this shit... it drives me nuts and makes my insomnia even worse. Everyday I read in the paper about more protests getting out of hand, and I read more editorials from people saying anti-war demonstrators who break the law should be thrown in jail and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Some even believe they should be treated as traitors, trying to bring about revolt during a time of war... instead of protesters speaking their mind. If this sentiment against protesters keeps growing in the states, there might be a push for police to use whatever means neccessary to contain protestors, and that's when innocent people will start getting shot. A jail in San Francisco is already filled to capacity with protesters, and now they are being transfered to other cities. This situation is getting out of hand. Even though there should truely be no such thing as "an abuse of free speech", many people feel that radical protesters are entering that territory. I just wish they would think of how their actions are giving everyone who exercises the freedom of speech a bad name, and they should have a deeper sense of social responsibility.

I totally agree w/you Dan, but the point about blocking the way for ambulances is moot. There's always a way for an ambulance to get to a hospital, be it by police leaving a path through the protesters or by taking an alternate route or by going to a different hospital. The main incident I think you're referring to was when Lake Shore Drive was shut down here in Chicago. LSD is almost like a highway and is never used as an ambulance route.

Oops.... A) A lot of protesters refuse to move or group together in one area, making the only path thru the protesters possible by putting on riot gear and tossing people into paddywagons. This may result in a riot that will block up the roadway for god knows how long B) Protesting is not like a parade or a march of people on a main street where they are marching with a permit and will readly disperse for emergency situations C) Going to another hospital, possibly one further away, can be a matter of life or death to the person inside the ambulance D) What if the ambulance has to get to the spot where the protesters are, but can't because of the large traffic jam caused by the protest?
Many protesters are intentionally positioning themselves in places where they will cause roadways to turn into parking lots... like I've said before, this is inexcusable to me and they should get a permit and organize a parade or march like everybody else who has a cause to support, and if they are refused a permit then that's one more point for their arguement of how their right to speak their mind is being repressed, which makes their case even stronger.

Like I said, I agree that having a sit-in in the middle of a busy road is moronic, but taking the consequences to hypothetical extremes defeats your/our point. There are no hospitals along LSD. There are many, many hospitals in the city, so having one road blocked isn't going to cause anyone in an ambulance to be delayed. And 5 months?!? Come on.

Pay attention to the news outside of Chicago oops.... I'm not exaggerating the story about the kid who had to go to the hospital. Think about NYC, which is already overcrowded, getting completely jammed up. These are not hypothetical extremes, people are raced in ambulances to hospitals many, MANY times a day in cities all over this country. You are not going to further the cause of peace by endangering others. That's what it all boils down to. I'm not saying it should be illegal to protest, I'm saying find a better way. Don't try and defend and praise people who are so desperate for attention that they will lower themselves to a level of hypocrisy that makes things worse for people on the whole.

Sorry... I saw it on MSNBC several days back, and I haven't checked the website to see if it's there... you might want to try looking for it there if you want. There's a chance the kid was going in on a "clinic day", which is a day they have about once every six months where people who can't afford to see specialists about their disease are given a chance to get see someone for free. I've had to go before for muscular dystrophy, and it's a big help if you don't have insurance.
