spectra, my matty j cdsingle is better than le jazz non, but if I'm gonna be writing about this stuff I need context & blah. pretty tabula rasa-ish, anyway. i'll try & find that b52s track when i'm at cybergates next, tho actually I only know two b52s songs (I think). hmmmn.

bcm will be campell solo, according to stefan.

bookstore music = piano magic's a trick of the sea, bits of which sound like cloudboy soundtracking a game of super mario bros.

etc, Friday, 21 May 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd love to hear more piano magic...I still only know that sublibrarian track.

I hope you are wary of grouping things together in ways that are unrealistic, in terms of "underground" or "improv" nz music. I don't know how to say what I want to here! I'll have a think about it.
I just think you in particular tend towards seizing upon scenes/conglomerations and so on...

Hey do you know much Onit? He really stands out.

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Friday, 21 May 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cars "Heartbeat City"

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Monday, 24 May 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The first Tubeway Army Lp! It's REALLY good! He sounds a bit angry, which is great even though I like his gloomy later stuff better PRECISELY AS it is gloomy. And has tunes I like, but mostly it's cute and gloomy. This has aggressive synth riffs and guitar, though, and a song about masturbation called "Everyday I Die" which is PRETTY GLOOMY, actually.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Monday, 24 May 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Recorded in the Swell Maps studio (Spaceward, Cambridge), too. Not that they owned it, I suppose. "I unstick pages and read", isn't that admirably honest and gross?

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Monday, 24 May 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Return of the Giant Slits" again. I can't work out if it's as good as "Cut". Nearly, anyway.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Monday, 24 May 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

And now "You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone" by Saint Etienne, I'm already reliving the glory days of my birthday I guess

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Monday, 24 May 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like the song "friends" of that tubeway army A.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 28 May 2004 07:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Btw Anton I put listening to this off for so long cos I was worried it'd fuck w/the White Album too much, it really doesn't, it's just great. I think it might be a first listen thing, tho. "Change Clothes" is fantastic

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Friday, 28 May 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

our band were thinking of covering "ubu dance party" & actually making it danceable (it's not even the most dancey early ubu). I chucked on the terminal drive disc from the ubu box set when I was cleaning up & listened to the seeds cover & the electric eels, mirrors & rocket from the tombs tracks. i'd forgotten how pussy "amphetamine" was compared to the others!
but yeah, LIFE STINKS is the best imagist poem EVAH, tho I can never remember the exact way it goes (I glom onto the "i can't think / i need a drink / life stinks" bit).
I found that microhouse tracklisting the other day but I think I threw it out! it's got three copy-protected luomo tracks up front (do you like divas, andrew?), I think a data 80 track, & um . . . something else.

etc, Sunday, 30 May 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey I was surprised you've hardly heard the B52s Ess. Cause I thought you'd like them cause of their good timing, the bass especially - like have you heard "your won private idaho"?

duane, Monday, 31 May 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i am listening to a 2 cd set entitled "the history of acid jazz" it is packaged in one of those nasty cheap box set ways you usually get cast off easy to licence shit from, i dunno, duke ellington or the wonder of celtic panpipes in. it is horrendous. there is no jazz and certainly no acid. i didn't pay for it.

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 31 May 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Livvie (Livvie), Sunday, 13 June 2004 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I am pleased to learn this. Yr allowed to dislike "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" if you want.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 13 June 2004 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks. That song is dumb. How about "Octopus's Garden" or whatever it's called?

Actually I've heard fuck all Bressa Creeting Cake, so can't really compare this with the old stuff. There's some damn good pop songs on this cd tho, kinda wistful and quirky for the most part. There's no liner notes so can't say who's on it or anything. Has it been released yet? I borrowed this copy from the radio station.

oh no I feel like I'm being horribly macho.
This is actually mostly beautiful like a... um... frozen rose shattering on the floor, or something.

How's the Loretta Lynn?

The excellent song by Lambchop I was listening to today mentions her:

"well suckers and smuckers
wake up you little fuckers
weaving in and out of truckers
trying to write a letter home
yes i should have stood in bed
with loretta lynn in my head
that's me I'm smelling like a rose
waking up in filthy clothes"

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Thursday, 17 June 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The Loretta Lynn would be a helluva lot better if I could listen to it without imagining thousands of music hacks working themselves into a frenzy at how Jack White is saving country.

Also I hadn't noticed before but it features ANOTHER Carrie song that's about GHOSTS. AND, "Prisstina" still sucks

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 24 June 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

And "Hollywood Ending" is still so AVERAGE comp to the rest of this wonderful record and Corin praying for her child's life on "Sympathy" is still fucking moving

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 24 June 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

BIG STAR RADIO CITY BEST RECORD EVER MADE TOO

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 24 June 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Those little organ notes in the fadeout of "Daisy Glaze" are just gorgeous

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i find "sympathy" the least moving song corin has ever sung, and its not because i hate children. hey justyn i saw what you wrote on that le tigre/wolf eyes thread about having to hear the "one beat" material live to appreciate it, i kinda feel the same way. if i had to rank sk albums, one beat would be at the bottom, definitely. not that i hate it.

cuspi dorian, Monday, 28 June 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

not the dsico one, though I've heard most of his stuff - I don't know who did it, but it's was more frothy/perky/upbeat than his reworking. an ilxor let me get it off them on slsk though, crisis averted!

Neil Young "American Stars n' Bars". I just listened to side one which is meant to be BAD Neil Young (NEIL YOUNG), and I thought "Wait hey maybe people get so into his more SOPHISTICATED stuff that they don't realise how much of his stuff is just GREAT crappy rock w.a bitchin riff and stupid lyrics?" Stuff they'd love if it was on a 60s garage comp or something, y'know? Like um most of side one of this record, say. And "Welfare Mothers" and loads and loads of other things ("Cinnamon Girl" too), it all just sounded really fun and easy and FUN. People expect a lot out of him, poor Neil. Serves him right for dabbling in ARTROCK sort of so often. I think Britain may be to blame for this misapprehension.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 6 August 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Who cares tho, side two is actually better anyway, but y'know. That dumb riff on "Saddle Up the Palomino" still rules.

really? theres an old atlantic side of that name plus pere ubu...is it some kind of standard?

if you mean "drinkin' wine," yeah, it's a standard...nick tosches says in one of his books that it's the only song he can think of where there's NEVER been a bad version. the jerry lee version is the best though.

chris andrews (fraew), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm listening to this favela mix diplo did, which is currently sonically jerking from 2-step strings to some sort of bollywood rap to ramshackle electro to WTF ROCK THE CASBAH RIPOFF w/some brazilian guy rapping, omg best thing ever!

etc, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

now it's playing that gently-down-the-stream nursery rhyme on some sort of sawn-off electro-flute! I need to get more of this stuff!

Joni Mitchell 'Don Juan's Reckless Daughter'

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

John Cale - Vintage Violence. What's SO great about this record? Apart from "Ghost Story" and the Bataclan version's better anyway.

Livvie (Livvie), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Well the arrangements are cool and there are some fantastic tracks but it's mostly good as a "departure" (eww) from most of his stuff, I had NO IDEA people'd come around to it to any degree, it used to be pretty dismissed I think

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

There's TWO fantastic tracks and many nice-enough ones and it IS a Cale record so always SOME merit but you know, he's got at least six better albums. Probably more, really. I'm gonna listen to MFANS soon anyway.

Livvie (Livvie), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ghost Story"/"Gideon's Bible", right?

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah! My attempt to list ten tracks was a DISASTER.

Livvie (Livvie), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I couldn't handle less than 30 and that's out of the air, it prob wouldn't work anyway

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Man the first 4 tracks are my favourites! "Mountain Energei", come on! Anyway MES's voice isn't that versatile usually, let him have his fun.
