Funnily enough, as per a different thread, I do believe I do not have an 'addictive personality', so have tried some, not all, things.

Never went this one. Seemed too much like it'd open a canowarrms, and various facets of my creative personality would become uncontrollable. and thesedays, I don't need 'more'...

Funny, one time I said that to someone who asked me (and others, it was a general q), I answered the above, or something similar, and he acted like I'd insulted him personally. (Not permanently, just rubbed up the wrong way slightly)...

Mark G, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:36 (twelve years ago) link

Also, was thinking of the 'world of drugs' the other day, and I realised that I'd forgotten acid even existed!

Mark G, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:37 (twelve years ago) link

judged by my parents and my toffee intake i've an addictive personality, but tbh i can take or leave alcohol and i've never even dabbled in drugs/stimulants of any kind

I can say regularly through most of high school and the first few years of college, but not nearly as regularly as I would have liked. Probably more regularly than was beneficial for me though, to be honest.

xposts Mm yes, toffee is incredibly moreish. One trick is not to take toffee into work and only eat it at home. Worked for me.

But yes, I have tried this just once, quite recently. I had a dreadful time TBH - I didn't trip balls or anything, just felt generally wretched and unsafe. Started fixating on things and not being able to shake off bad vibes. It was admittedly the third day of a festival and a fairly busy, confusing environment, so I'm sure I'd have had a better time in other circumstances.

Alexandre Dumbass (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:55 (twelve years ago) link

a tab and a night in front of the telly is pretty much as good as home entertainment gets imo

FPocalypto! (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:56 (twelve years ago) link

To clarify the second half of my statement - "set & setting" never played a part in my decision to drop. I was most influenced by sheer opportunity, followed by immediate consumption.

steep? that's where i'm off hiking (darraghmac), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:00 (twelve years ago) link

Tried it once, at university. Took too much and it really wasn't fun.

I was incredibly naive about what I was doing and, moreover, how it would react to my state of mind at the time, which was neither strong nor stable. I remember it carrying on for a (not so)good 30 hours or so before I could finally sleep. I think I spent the next day building a lego pirate ship.

Probably the single major regret of my life tbh.

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:05 (twelve years ago) link

obvs i can only speak for me but i've never felt like "i" wasn't present when i've been tripping. obviously that's not the same thing as being in full control, but as far as i can recall there's always been a core me observing the proceedings and pretty much aware of the laws of physics and that i was on a trip.

FPocalypto! (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:09 (twelve years ago) link

and chuckling a lot and talking bollocks to myself, obv

FPocalypto! (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:10 (twelve years ago) link

Yes, I think one of the main arguments for people not wanting to take drugs is fear of "not being in control", which I understand as "not being sentient". On psychedelics and amphetamines you're about as self-aware as you are when you're drunk AFAIK. Things like K though... I dunno, seeing someone on that stuff when I tried 'cid was what kicked off the bad part of the trip. The guy had no soul. Not a thing. Falling over, completely vacant, non-communicative; and it just made me feel inconsolably sad for 12 hours straight.

Alexandre Dumbass (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:16 (twelve years ago) link

12 hours is an awful long time to have to surrender yourself to anything.

Used to do this regularly, and very casually. Like NV even with large quantities or bad trips I always had some core awareness of "I am in here and there are drugs making things the way they are."

Mushrooms, otoh, always left me curled up and muttering.

my only experience of acid was the final night of our school musical (chicago 97 never forget) all of the leads were at a house party where 'fred casely' dropped a tab, crawled under a chair and spent the night puking into/stroking a pair of wellingtons he'd found there

steep? that's where i'm off hiking (darraghmac), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 15:40 (twelve years ago) link

acid was a pretty big turning point as far as my musical predilections go. there was a period where i did it with some frequency, but not so much anymore. for me its not really the type of thing where you can just let go and have a good time, i'd constantly be examining the effect it is having on me and that gets pretty exhausting. might be different combined with other drugs.

I've always been interested in this, seems like it might be a younger man's drug now - I know enough to know not to take it in a city unless you + a minder are down with sitting in the park all day. And when am I in the country?

Also of course worried about overthinking - done enough talking to Acid Heroes who have one bad trip, and then try again and realise they can never take it again. I'm worried that I'd spend my time waiting for the downturn, and that anxiety forcing - but I don't know if that's a reasonable worry?

Pretty regular late teens and early twenties. Good times mostly all the time – a few down moments but they blew away quickish. I dunno – a tab, good friends, walking into the countryside in spring - these are happy memories.

I'd be a bit hesitant now - my head's a bit more rigid & life's heavier. But I'd like to check in with it again.

have done it once, whole thing was very nice and calm, went for a walk, played with a kitten, cried at some jazz, watched stop making sense, no cosmic revelations i hadn't had on mdma a few years before (but those were substantial/lifechanging/etc). only nasty part was on a bus at night where we went past HAROLD STREET and suddenly my entire psychic universe was:

http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/8/2011/01/500x_harold.jpg

had to get off at the next stop but besides that would recommend

oh and i spent like a full thirty minutes trying to compose a utilitarian text message to The Reverend, who was in town that weekend and whom at the time i was still hoping to find my way back to (this did not happen) and i kept erasing everything and collapsing into lolhippie diatribes about how we CAN'T just SIT as ISOLATED NODES and send TINY DISCRETE INFORMATION PACKETS back and forth and MISTAKE THIS FOR COMMUNICATING and communications technology was a TRAP that opened up new connections sure but also ALIENATED AND ISOLATED us and STRIPPED our interactions of empathy and engagement, so eventually i just called him and turned out to be exactly as in command of my phone skills as i was of my texting skills

the "intenterface" (difficult listening hour), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

that's perfect!

beachville, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 18:40 (twelve years ago) link

that's great "difficult listening hour", i remember collapsing into a similar diatribe for a good six months the last time i used ... it was 5-6 hits of liquid, led to involuntary hospitalization, dropping out of school for a semester and a lengthy intervention involving several medications ending in -pine and -pam.

this is an interesting question for me - i used weekly for a period of about six months, but a lot of the tabs i got were from really sketchy homeless nomad connections so i have no idea how many times i got a sketchy combo of mdma + speed (or just speed) instead of what i thought i was getting

also there was a period about a year later where i was eating cookies daily. these cookies had been left in the fridge by a former roommate - several gallons worth of bright-green dough. i knew the cookies had been magically laced with an herbal substance but i also found out later that they were magically laced with a vial of magical liquid.

it has been more than ten years but i still see trails when i drive at night (i guess everyone does to some extent, it's how the eye works, right?) and i can't stare longer than 10 seconds at patterned carpets without everything going all "dazzle ship camo" on me (again, it's hard to separate the line between common-or-garden variety optical illusion and flashback) ... in any case i don't think i ever need to experience that post-comedown twelve hours (or six months) of teeth-grinding jitteriness again

i definitely had a pre-acid personality that is much different from my post-acid personality. basically i am just much, much quieter and much more "in my head" as opposed to engaged with what's happening around me. i am also a lot more content to do quiet, boring and solitary activities.

the late great, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:00 (twelve years ago) link

BTW i would really not recommend using any psychedelic more than once, and i am absolutely not a puritan - i believe strongly, for example, in the therapuetic effects of cannabis. but i have never ever seen or heard anything but diminishing returns after a first experience.

if you really need to be dissuaded, i would compare cannabis + lsd like this: imagine masturbating. that's like cannabis. now imagine masturbating for 12 hours with a gas-powered power tool. that's like lsd. you just don't need to do something that intense to get what you're trying to get out of it, and if you do, you're overstimulated and need a break.

the visual aspect of lsd seems to be highly overstated imo but maybe what we were getting in the late 90s was much weaker than it had been in the 60s

the late great, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:37 (twelve years ago) link

used to do it regularly, dont do it anymore. prob would if the situation was right tho.

i used to think the visual aspect was overstated until i spent an hour running around in a tennis court jumping over the center net and trying to explain where the door/gate was to my friends until one of them explained that i was actually on a rugby pitch and my brain had just seen the lines on the ground and whoomp constructed the tennis court we had been in a few hours before around me.

also, dont have sex on acid unless you are ready to explain to the person you are with why you are getting creeped out now that their hands have foot long fingers on them in a calming and loving way

one of the craziest visual experiences on acid i've had was when my friends and i had a group visual hallucination. we had just packed the b0ng when all of a sudden the w33d turned into this little leafy creature with such natural movements. the four of us were just standing around gaping at it and being like 'uhhh do you guys see this too?'

one might assume that someone had said something that described the w33d sprite which then influenced the group's visual perception but that was the crazy part! the only thing anyone could say at the time was 'ummm wtf? are you guys seing this??'

I had a friend that did so much acid it was unreal. Once time we were driving through the back roads of Vermont stone cold sober when he slammed on the breaks and looked really freaked out before asking if I'd seen the little blue dude that just ran across the street. He was kind of a walking anti-drug ad.

Also much of my dad's family blamed a distant cousin's mental health issues on a single experience he had with acid. That always sounded like BS but also scared the hell out of me.

Highlights of the five hits of liquid:
wandering through apartment complex, see boulders in playground, think they're giant slugs
drinking OJ, thinking there were skulls crunching between my teeth as I drank
ostensibly bad trip stopped when I looked at a clock and it was running backward and realized I was just seeing shit
scenes from Say Anything would play forward on TV then backward for a minute at a time
laying on my side, room fills with red thread like moving up each eye, after both eyes were filled everything in the room started melting together
when I stood up, there was a web of red string everywhere, running horizontally and vertically, could feel it on my skin
when I picked up my blue shirt, hundreds of blue butterflies fluttered out
~12-16 hours in, I was fried and just wanted to stop seeing things so I drove to my apartment
passenger door looked like it was a block away
took three or four hydrocodone on arrival, passed out for almost a day

used to do it pretty often, in my late teens - early 20s (going to raves, etc). not particularly proud of that, but it was never really a hedonistic thing for me, more of a learning/exploratory experience.

the last time I did it was just a one-timer, late last year, but I don't think I'd be interested anymore at this phase in life... there's a point, I think, where you get all acid has to offer - and the only lesson from it anymore is 'stop doing so much acid'

ha classic, once while we were tripping one of my friends was like 'there was this guy who was tripping and someone threw a football and it hit him in the head and he never stopped' then we all thought deeply abt how intense that would be, i recall for some reason i was imagining it taking place in harvard yard

Three or four times between 18 and mid-20s. Ancient history. When I pulled out The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus one day, though, it still sounded fine.

I only did it a couple times, and that was almost 20 years ago.

The first time was in high school, during the local university's winter carnival where they always showed a double feature at the student theater of Heavy Metal and The Wall. That started out fine but became rather unpleasant, so my friends and I left and sort of roamed around campus for a while. Part of the fun of winter carnival is that student groups build giant snow statues, often of monsters folklore characters or cartoon characters, stuff like that, and seeing 30 foot tall Paul Bunyans and shit made out of snow was pretty horrifying. I remember getting dropped off at home somehow and wondering why I could not fall asleep.

A couple years later we all dropped while playing Trivial Pursuit and the game kind of turned to shit after that. I remember taking a shower for like 45 minutes, then ending up at a cabin way out in the woods. We went to a bar that had a live cougar in a cage to buy beer, and I ended up drinking like 20 beers and everyone was pissed at me - I did not realize that acid allowed one to consume so much alcohol with so few repercussions. Anyway I passed out and woke up at like 6 in the morning with a toilet seat placed around my neck, with two dudes eating plain boiled macaroni noodles out of a pot staring at me. One of them was wearing a dress; I have no idea where the dress came from as there were no women there.

The best time was at a party on Lake Superior and was pretty great - me and five other people were playing in the water, making shit out of driftwood, talking about how everyone in the world was either a Ren or a Stimpy (lol 90s) and, then we realized that everyone else was gone or passed out, and as we approached a car sitting in the middle of a bunch of sand dunes we found that the trunk had a cooler full of jello shots. Somehow at that moment a bluegrass song came on the tape player and we all had a hoedown ate jello shots, and continued to roam around in a bunch of mine ruins.

The last time was on a trip to Florida, where I was on the shore of the Atlantic ocean for the first time. I was standing in the waves up to my knees thinking HOLY FUCK ENGLAND IS OVER THERE, AND AFRICA IS THAT WAY, DO YOU REALIZE, FUCKING _AFRICA_ while my friend Ike gathered up a massive pile of flotsam and jetsam to build a huge monolith of some sort. We went back to the condo where a bunch of people were staying and I was convinced that I was in Vietnam, like in the last half of Full Metal Jacket, though this was not a bad thing at all.

And that was it, I'm done, never again.

i always liked what alan watts said about psychedelics - "when you get the message, hang up the phone"

OTM truth bomb... Never felt a great need to try again after a handful of times in my 30s - not from any negative experiences (quite the opposite), but I haven't felt a great need to disassociate since then. Also, sources have dried up.

As with any kind of inductive tool it helps to have a gut feeling about where you want to go. You can't just take and look for the pretty lights, you have to allow things to just wash over you and happen. Set and setting are important, but having the proper emotional/psychological calibration (for lack of a better description) is vital. If you're a control freak in reality, you going to have problems in surreality, and if you're using to seek some sort of cosmic truth you may be disappointed. You're peeking into the mind's assembly code and if you're dissatisfied with the core dump, you'll end up like Syd Barrett and using and using and using until you think you're an orange.

Having said that... I remember these events (whether or not they occurred is another story):
- Sitting in a meadow in Yosemite Valley and feeling (like it was braille) the fractal mathematics embedded in every plant and tree. Insects were miniature complex-system spaceships. Touching a granite cliff-face was like feeling the anatomy of the earth and being plugged into the central core.
- Looking at the night sky through a telescope is like looking at a painting and seeing the brush strokes of the Universe and the three dimensional layer to the solar system, our galaxy, and our galaxy's neighbors.
- Driving over Sonora Pass was an exercise in Dr. Seuss navigation. The road went vertical, upside down, through loops, and into the most absurd geometries imaginable. Not once was I unsafe or out of control because I knew that if I stayed on the road I'd be OK.
- Forget the music and movies, if you're using go to a restaurant you like and fire up those other senses you've been ignoring. A simple steak dinner w/fresh ingredients was one of the best meals I've EVER had. HFS those tomatoes from the garden...
- 2001: A Space Odyssey is close, but superfluous if you're already there. Best movie experience was watching Star Trek: Generations and riding along as the Enterprise D's saucer section crashes.
- Never was able to play guitar along with Playing With Fire or Lazer Guided Melodies. The guitar strings resonated too much with all the sound that was bouncing around and it was ridiculous to mess with perfection anyway.

Did it regularly through my teens, walking the streets of London at night and observing the ghoulish fantasyland of the urban matrix, coming down on the Heath as the sun rose. Always had a good, or at least very interesting time. I feel fortunate to have had these experiences and I miss it, but I doubt I would enjoy it as much now.

Never tried it. Was kinda scared of it bc of my highschool obsession w "Go Ask Alice". Also looking back I don't know that I could have really relied on my circle of friends to get through a bad trip. I would def drop acid w Mr Veg if the opportunity arose, I would feel safe w him. Or at the ILX world fap with Darragh :) I'd def be willing to try in the right setting.

I remember in high school it was the only book in the library you had to get on a wait list for

i feel like acid can actually be p helpful to people at certain times, like it can knock you out of habitual ways of thinking, its shown promise in helping to treat addiction etc, but its also dangerous particularly for people who are predisposed to mental illness/instability

già, ya, déjà, ja, yeah, whatever... (Michael White), Saturday, 8 March 2014 00:49 (ten years ago) link

I tried acid twice, tbh, back in the 70s. Not especially good quality stuff, either. By then acid was yesterday's news and cocaine was the up and coming drug, so demand was slack and good stuff hard to find. Therefore I have no particularly interesting fireworks to report. It was a worthwhile experiment, but not for a third time.

Aimless, Saturday, 8 March 2014 01:55 (ten years ago) link

the first couple times i did acid i don't think i did enough because basically the only effect i got was paranoia along with some visual whatevers, but the one time i did a bunch with some hippie friends (like, i dunno, 8 or 10 tabs?) i had a pretty awesome time. like i was about to type 'it didn't change my life or anything' but thinking back i can remember how i started kind of getting outside my own head that night, and considering the thoughts and feelings of the people i was with in a way i never really had, and i like suddenly understood myself as a person with the ability to influence the people around me, like make them feel good with something i'd say or whatever, and i had never really been very mindful of any of that before, and i think it was really positive.....

maybe i should do some more sometime soon, i haven't really fucked with it since then, that was a couple years ago.
