This can also double as the place where we talk about the crazy things Dusty Baker says.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! sez: "wrt Derrek Lee critics: Wait until June. Check out his career splits as the weather warms up."

Believe me, they've been checked out! There's not really anything that suggests the Cubs will be really playing well until June (Prior's injury, Maddux's sluggishness, traditional slow starts of Lee, Alou, Sosa to a lesser extent).

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Crayiest thing Dusty has said this season: "Prior will be back by May."

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

4-4 in the top of the 4th against the Reds today...looks like the Cubs will have to get a field goal at some point if they want to pull this one out.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Alou is starting slow?

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Baseball Prospectus's Will Carroll saw him throw and estimated May 10 as a general return date. He'd be ready today if MLB would let him throw a towel instead of a ball.

Alou's got some RBIs but I think he's squandered quite a few opportunities hitting cleanup so far this year. Admittedly I'm going on anecdotal evidence about Alou from another message board, I've only been able to catch the Cubs a couple times this year so far.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

alou is batting .364/.364/.727 with RISP so far, and .267/.313/.533 with runners on, which is pretty solid. i've always liked him a helluva lot more than sosa.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Heheh... BProspectus ran these in the last month:

"I think walks are overrated unless you can run... If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps. But the guy who walks and can't run, most of the time they're clogging up the bases for somebody who can run."

"Who's been the champions the last seven, eight years? ...Have you ever heard the Yankees talk about on-base percentage and walks? Walks help. But you ain't going to walk across the plate. You're going to hit across the plate. That's the school I come from."

"It's called hitting, and it ain't called walking. Do you ever see the top 10 walking? You see top 10 batting average. A lot of those top 10 do walk. But the name of the game is to hit."

"Chemistry is very important. I remember a few years ago when I was with the Giants, a guy told me there was no such thing as chemistry. I said, 'Well, there is no such thing as chemistry when you don't have any.' But for those that have it, it means a lot."

Then these on April Fools Day:

"It's funny, for so long I was so resistant to this idea of 'taking pitches.' But someone explained it to me the other day... and you know, it makes a lot of sense. What the hell was I thinking?"

"And pitch counts: man alive! Why didn't someone tell me about these things before? I really could have saved that Gary Huckabay some ulcers."

"Oh man, things are going to be different now, I swear. I've got a whole new outlook on life."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I only questioned it cuz he's hit a HR in each of the last three games; seems to be heating up.

Grif Jr. just crushed one.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Alou has 10 rbis in 8 games.

The Cubs hitting has been generally pretty good and they are driving in runs. Barrett has hit better than expected and the signing of Todd Walker seems pretty smart these days, so even with Lee not hitting a ton, the offseason pickups are looking smart.

The pitching has been a bit slow out of the box with Maddux and part of the bullpen not throwing very well. I think (hope) both will come around. Maddux had a shaky start last year, but settled down and had a decent year. I think that they will make Hawkins the closer within a month or so.

With or without Prior for awhile, I still like this Cubs team to be able to contend. Houston has lost Petitte for a while. Once Cinci's starters get clubbed and the bullpen gets over used, they will slip back in the pack. They got off to decent starts the past few seasons only to burn out their bullpen and head into a nose dive. St.Louis is solid, but their starters are not great.

If Prior can get back to his old self for a second have run, they will be in good shape. If Prior can't come back to normal, they might make the playoffs, but I don't know if they can make a run for the title.

earlnash, Friday, 16 April 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

the yankees traded d'angelo jimenez for a half a season of jay witasick.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, my bad on Alou. That's what I get for opening my mouf before checking the stats. He had a nice start last year if I recall, and a terrible one in 2002 when he admitted he wasn't ready to play in the colder weather.

Weurtz seems to have punched his ticket back to Des Moines today. Remlinger can't get back soon enough.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Both Chicago teams seem to be having their share of pitching meltdowns this year...ugly.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

ALou and Ramirez, hitting next to each other in the lineup, are both a triple short of the cycle in the 6th inning..

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob, does it make you ill to see Jimenez playing so well now that he's no longer a Sox?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, I don't really miss him. Hey - we've got Juan Uribe! No, but seriously I can't fault them for cutting bait with Jimenez. We'll see how long he keeps it up.

Dusty is going ballistic! He just got thrown out.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Was Dusty arguing balls and strikes? Something else?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

No the umpire thought a Cub had batted out of order (after Dusty pulled a double switch), and called him out. And Dusty said, "no way, dude, you wrote it down wrong!!!" or words to that effect. Then he got tossed. Then he threw his cap and kicked a little bit of dirt and so forth. I'd never seen him get that angry.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

the last time i saw him get kicked out was in houston when an ump called a foul ball a home run (TV proved the ump wrong but it still counted).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy shit. 10-9 in the bottom of the 9th. Sammy (tying Banks) and Alou (2nd of the day) go back-to-back off Graves to win it.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the cubs got out of a huge top of the 10th jam with bases loaded and 1 out. that was huge.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Leo Mazzoni is using a voodoo doll on Maddux, his pitching has been major suxors so far this season.

Even with the Cubs dropping two of three, this series with the Reds was very entertaining to say the least. If Cinci can keep that lineup healthy, they are going to raise quite a few team's ERA.

earlnash, Monday, 19 April 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

There's still a fourth game tomorrow! Seriously, this is the most entertaining series I've seen since the Cubs/Cards hatefest last year. Granted there haven't been many series in between the two, but this one just feels like September somehow.

The TV dudes keep saying Maddux needs to find his "trademark location" but I'm not so sure his location is the problem. He's around the strike zone like he always is. His pitches don't look to me like they're moving like they used to -- he rolled so many 85-88 mph fastballs up there that just did nothing today. Well, did nothing until they hit the Waveland concrete, that is.

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 19 April 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Maddux started off badly last year as well, even worse actually. He's somewhat of a slow starter as is (just gonna keep telling myself that)

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 19 April 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Was Wood justified for his actions? I kinda saw the replays (w/o sound) and it looked like he wasn't getting some borderline calls.

Is Clement getting punished today for Wood's actions? His pitches that I saw looked pretty good.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the ball four to Dunn that got him barking at the ump was unquestionably a strike. He'd been dropping the breaking ball over all game for called strikes and getting a few other marginal low strikes as well. It sounds kind of dumb to say, but those are the calls that starting pitchers get in the 9th inning and he just got squeezed by the ump. I think he might not have been so animated had the home plate ump not torn off his mask and run out to the mound to challenge Wood (wtf is with umpires doing that, by the way?!)

Losing his cool after walking Dunn was all on Wood though. Giving Wily Mo Pena somthing over the plate on an 0-2 count is just inexcusable.

Clement's looking really good today. Prior threw 35 pitches off the mound again, too.

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 19 April 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Aramis Ramirez, jeez!

It's funny how all the preseason predix talked about the overwhelming Cubs' staff whilst their success this season has mostly come as a result of an at times overwhelming offense.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 19 April 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Clement's problem is consistency. He will have a good game then get shelled or he will look sharp the first time through the order then get wild.

Zambrano doesn't get as much press, but he could be just as good as any of them. The bullpen blew at least three wins for him last year. Zambrano did look a bit spooked during a couple of his playoff starts, but he was only 22, so maybe next time it won't be as big a deal.

earlnash, Monday, 19 April 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Derrick Lee watch: Grand Slam in the 7th today.

boldbury (boldbury), Monday, 19 April 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

that's what I'm talkin bout right there, hell yes

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 19 April 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil, Monday, 19 April 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Cubbies send 12 batters to the plate in the top of the 1st against Pittsburgh "ace" Josh Fogg... 8 score.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

8 runs on 5 hits (1 error). Fogg knocked out after 3 walks 2 hits and only one out.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Kip Wells is the ace, no?

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Kip Wells can eat a dick.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

though actually I think he is the ace

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

perhaps he was tipping his pitches?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Patterson 5 for 6!

Pitching team? In 14 games, the Cubs are hitting .291 with 30 HR and 85 runs (6.07 per game)!

earlnash, Thursday, 22 April 2004 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"After a blinded Mitre pulled the first face smash away, pitchers Francis Beltran and Carlos Zambrano took turns rubbing the paper-plate goo in his face two more times." (link)

For those keeping track at home, Prior's replacement is 1-0 with a 2.89 ERA and 1.34 WHIP.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait a minute, Pittsburgh has an ace?

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"ace"

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Kip Wells is 2-1 with a 1.89 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. And he has 20 Ks and 8 BBs in 19 innings of work. Oh and he's owned by ILB league-leaders The Cronies. I'm not saying, i'm just saying.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Is he related to Kip Winger?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Broheems, stop trolling! :)

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Moises Alou (owned by perennial mid-table act The Starfighters!) with a two-run jack in the bottom of the first.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 23 April 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

and then Maddux calming down and no more runs in the game and Cubs win Cubs win blah blah blah

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 23 April 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cubs are now 10-6 with Mark Prior not even off the DL yet.

Corey Patterson, 2 walks today? gahhhhh wtf is happening

Tonight is Cubs and Zambrano vs. D-Backs and The Big Unit. Pretty good early year pitching match up considering how well Zambrano has been doing so far this year.

earlnash, Monday, 26 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

How about Clement with the near no-no yesterday? Piazza looked like a fool swatting at those sliders.

The Cubs have allowed opponents a total of five runs in the last six games (and no team more than one run in any of those games). I would have a hard time thinking of another period in which the Cubs played this well in every facet of the game.

Prior will start his spring training in AZ this week, according to reports.

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

no Cubs fans want to comment on Jose Padilla?

hstencil, Monday, 26 April 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Mattbot, I picked the Cubs to win the Central and wanna see it ... but keep in mind, this weekend was against the METS, sans Reyes and Floyd. Their big bat right now is Shane friggin' Spencer. I'm so glad I skipped the TV...

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 26 April 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Zambrano got shellacked. With Johnson and Sexton, the D-Backs have one of the tallest front lines in the NL.

earlnash, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm afraid the Dirty Bomber may have cursed the Cubs.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnson now 12-0 with a 1.98 ERA lifetime against the Cubs. Nope, these ain't the Mets.

BP should do some investigating into why certain pitchers own certain teams like this regardless of the hitters involved.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

CHICAGO CUBS TRADED BEFORE GLORY AWARD WINNERS:

2004: Hee Shop Choi?

Past winners:

1964: Lou Brock
1984: Joe Carter
1987: Dennis Eckersley
1989: Rafael Palmeiro

Through all of this they kept with Leon Durham until it was really freakin' obvious he wasn't going to be a star.

(In the Cubs defense, the did steal Sandberg from the Phillies and Sosa from the White Sox, so they have made a couple of good trades.)

earlnash, Thursday, 29 April 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

also, the eck was all but washed up as a starter when he was traded away with his best years long behind him in cleveland and boston.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 29 April 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Keep an eye on Dontrelle Willis for the 2002 slot on that list, though his glory isn't yet assured and he never played in the bigs wit da Cubs. Might Jamie Moyer fit in on that list, too? I can't remember if he started with the Cubs or not (though I only really remember him being utterly hittable when he was with the team).

I think Aramis Ramirez might be added to the Sandberg/Sosa list before it's all said and done.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 29 April 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Take a look at Eck's years from 1987 to 1991. He quit drinking which changed everything, but I wish it would have been in Chicago he turned it around, considering he was pretty much traded for nothing. Eckersley had a decent year when they won the division in 84.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/e/eckerde01.shtml

Moyer pitched in Baltimore for a few years inbetween. He is a weird one that really only figured out what to do when he hit Seattle in his middle 30s. Maybe Moyer needed his arm to wear out enough so that he could throw so slow.

Joe Carter is a hard one, as he was apart of that Sutcliffe deal which that year he went 17-1 as a Cub and won the division. Being a diehard fan at that time, I was bummed when they let Carter go.

Palmeiro was another hard trade, as they got Mitch Williams in that deal and won the division that year. It didn't work out in the long run, but 89 was fun. Williams would nearly give you a heart attack everytime he came into the game and eventually ran into Joe Carter and gave Phillie fans a battery chucking target for life. One of the most joyful moments watching baseball was when Williams in 89 faked putting down a bunt then swung and hit an HR, which may have been the only time he batted the whole season.

earlnash, Thursday, 29 April 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember when Mitch came in to bat and hit a grand slam!

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 29 April 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Moyer started w/ the Rangers...?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 29 April 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"I remember when Mitch came in to bat and hit a grand slam!"

That is the one. He squared like the squeeze was on and pulled back and socked it. Zimmer pulled off some crazy stuff that year and for some reason it worked at least until they ran into Will Clark in the playoffs.

Moyer came up with the Cubs around the same time as Maddux and I think was traded to the Rangers in the Palmeiro deal. He was with the Cubs for a year or two.

earlnash, Friday, 30 April 2004 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

That's gotta hurt. Losing in the 9th on four walks by three pitchers, the last with the bases loaded.

boldbury (boldbury), Saturday, 1 May 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Think the Cardinals remember that 5-game series in late '03 where the Cubs won every game but one of 'em and essentially won the division?

earlnash, Saturday, 1 May 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Now that I've sobered up, I forgot to add last night that doing the walk-off home run huddle-jump at home plate after your team just walked home the winning run = dud x1,000,000

mattbot (mattbot), Saturday, 1 May 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

That should be saved for balked-in runs.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 1 May 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"Think the Cardinals remember that 5-game series in late '03 where the Cubs won every game but one of 'em and essentially won the division?"

The week before that series, the Cubs and Cardnals played three in St. Louis, the Cub bullpen blew two chances to win games. One of those was a real shame as Zambrano pitched one of his best starts through eight and they went to the pen in the ninth and blew a two run lead.

All I want to know is why oh why isn't the Cubs/Cards game on TV tonight?

earlnash, Sunday, 2 May 2004 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

booooooooooooooooooo to the cubs and all their young pitching talent.

so out of the Cards first seven hitters, Pujols has the lowest average. He is even below Ray-Ray Lankkkkkkford.

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 2 May 2004 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cub bullpen pitched pretty much like crap in St. Louis.

Blergh.

earlnash, Monday, 3 May 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

What's amazing now is that their bullpen is turning into a bunch of high schoolers while Wood, Maddux, Clement, and Zambrano have pitched like the best foursome in the majors of late.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 3 May 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

How about Dusty using Derrek Lee to sac bunt in the top of the 10th? Not that I'm questioning his judgment, I mean, who wouldn't take the bat out of Lee's hands and entrust Alex "K-Gonz" Gonzalez to drive a runner in from second?

Cubs-Cards series are just brutal for the in-game managing.

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

marquis has pitched really well lately. i think he can beat Maddux today.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

bnw, given that I picked up Marquis, I'd like to agree, but if he's throwing the ball all Etch-a-Sketchy like he did his last start, he'll be lucky to escape the 4th giving up less than 5 runs.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

usually you will know maddux's fate in the first inning, by how much of the outside corner the ump is giving him. but i think marquis' era is like 2 runs lower then maddux's in their last 3 starts.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Greg Maddux just stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Wow.

he has used his fastball in game-deciding situations but, unfortuneately for him, the decisions have gone against him. he's starting to remind me of a closer the bosox had about 10 years ago, ken ryan who could throw a fastball 96+ mph but it had absolutely no movement on it.

earlnash, Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't put much stock in wins as an important stat, but if anyone deserves 15 wins, it's Wood. He looks to be well on his way to another 11-10, 3.00 ERA season.

Steve Finley has six goddamned homeruns against the Cubs. The season series with the D-Backs mercifully ends tomorrow.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"I don't put much stock in wins as an important stat"

Losses like these are big if the Cubs lose the division or a playoff spot by a game or two. I would have been plenty happy if they could have scored in the last two innings and Mercker got the win.

The Diamondbacks have owned the Cubs the past few years.

earlnash, Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, I meant wins as a pitching stat. I still have friends who feel that starting pitchers can be evaluated on the basis of their W-L record. Wins as a team stat are very important indeed!

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve Finley is a certified Cubs-Killah!

Here's how important wins are as a pitching stat: Last Jeriome Robertson had 15 wins for the Astros with an ERA over 5.00. When it came time to make some decisions about the rotation once the Astros signed Clemens and Pettitte, management gave the job straight out to Tim Redding, who only had 10 wins last year, but with an ERA under 4.00.

And where is Robertson these day? In AAA for Cleveland with an ERA over 7.00.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Redding's not doing much better, though - he had a nice ERA, but his WHIP & K/BB ratios were buttass, weren't they?

Not to dismiss your OTM point, BB. I'm coming from the vantage point of a fantasy schlub still reeling from my torrid love affair with Redding's potential.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

There are a lot of Astros fans in love with Redding's potential. People keep talking about what great stuff Redding has, but he is severely deficient in the mental aspect of the game. Mostly, he just gets rattled if there's an error or he doesn't get a close call or something and he starts laying the ball over the middle of the plate.

I think he gets one or two more starts to straighten things out before the Astros go with Duckworth, who had a couple of effective starts in Pettitte's absence.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The Astros need some knuckleball - do they still have (Jared?) Fernandez in their system, or is he on the Reds?

I'm derailing this thread for gygax, BTW.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Every team needs some knuckleball!

I think I'm going to make an MVP Baseball rotation that consists solely of knuckleballers, screwballers, forkballers, and split-fingersersers.

There's a reliever w/ the Indians (I don't wanna describe him as "the gay porno guy", but I can't remember his name) that busted out some eephusy goodness on the BoSox 2 nights ago (to the tune of 56 MPH!) - the RemDog (Jerry Remy, Boston color dood extraordinaire) was lovin' it Mickey Dees style.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

jerry remy kicks ass. there was talk of him being in the running for the managers job before schilling epstein brought francona in.

The Astros need some knuckleball - do they still have (Jared?) Fernandez in their system, or is he on the Reds?

He's in AAA right now, but we may see him again before the season is done. He actually got the first Pettitte-replacement start but couldn't get out of the first inning. I think the cooler weather in early April was hurting the knuckler.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

according to today's Sun-Times Prior is set to return on june 3. the article also says he won't be going directly from extended spring training to chicago, there will "be a few stops along the way", so you may want to scope out the iowa city schedule if you're in the area.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 7 May 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I really hope he starts May 28 at Iowa, it's Friday Night Fireworks AND there's a "Sticks Big Bat Giveaway!" I'd love to see him pitch.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 7 May 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

So, Cubs fans, would you agree that if a murder took place just outside the entrance to US Cellular 90 minutes after a White Sox game that it would merit more than a bottom-of-the-Metro-section-in-the-Tribune 2" x 5" story? I seem to remember the William Ligue and Bill Simonson stories getting a lot more press than what happened last night.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

no, i would doubt you'd even hear of it. i'd wager there are more murders around 35th street than there are around clark & addison. from my lush abode on austin blvd. i hear gun shots more nights than i don't but the results are never in the papers. i was kind of shocked to read that the austin neighborhood had the most murders in the city last year. from the day to day coverage you'd never know it.

now if the guy had jumped onto the field and been murdered THAT would've been page one material.

plus it's front page news in the sun times, plus two articles on page 3. you don't really expect the cubs owners to be publicizing a murder after one of their games do you?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I don't. I do expect respectable news outlets to inform the locals about any high-profile murders in the area.

There was some crazy dude who attacked a family of Sox fans when they were on their way to a game, killing one of them - I've seen that one in the papers.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

so your chief complaint is that the tribune co isn't respectable?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

don't know how much different the print edition is but there has been more coverage of the shooting on the tribune website than the sun times site. perhaps that's more reflective of the frequency with which content is updated on the tribune site than the sun times site but even so, it's kept me abreast of the story.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

plus it's front page news in the sun times, plus two articles on page 3. you don't really expect the cubs owners to be publicizing a murder after one of their games do you?

I guess I did, silly me. Up until last year, we were all told by the Powers That Be at the Tribune that their coverage of their own team would be fair and equitable. There's been an incredible imbalance in coverage of the Cubs v. Sox this year that even the sports editors at both papers now admit that they give more ink to the Cubs because they have more fans.

This murder, as I implied, would have been front page news in the Tribune and Sun-Times and continued to reinforce the stereotype about the area around US Cellular being "unsafe," while actual crime statistics show that the area around Wrigley has more crime. I mean, the Tribune BURIED the story at the very bottom of the Metro section. Boers and Bernstein and others on the Score today have been lambasting the Tribune (rightly, IMO) for this obvious corporate CYA tactic. The guy got killed outside Wrigley not 200 feet from the entrance to it, having used one of the freebie toy bats that were given away at the game as a weapon against the driver of the SUV. He was shot at one of the busiest intersections in that neighborhood at 6:00 at night. It's not like some drug deal gone bad at Stateway Gardens or in the Austin neighborhood at 1:30am. The guy was at the Cubs game, with a souvenir from the park, and was killed right in front of the park. Surely this merits more than the tiny little buried placement the Trib gave it, right?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

This story made it all the way into the Guardian - it's a national story. The Tribune is really awkward when it comes to these conflict-of-interest things.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cubs bullpen pitched pretty well this weekend, other than Borowski on Sunday.

Patterson and Walker need to lay off the high outside fastball, they made Chacon look like a genius on Saturday. Patterson's big hit on Sunday to win the game definitely makes up for it.

I'd like to see the Cubs spread a few of those big game runs around, they seem to hit for a dozen, then play tight for the next few days.

earlnash, Sunday, 9 May 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

you may want to scope out the iowa city schedule if you're in the area.

I'd lean toward Des Moines (AAA), I don't think Prior'll be throwing for the Quad Cities River Bandits any time soon

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Only tangentially related to the Cubs, but does Roy Oswalt get a five game suspension for tossing all that gum on the field this weekend? The 8th inning of that Stros-Braves game unfolded almost exactly like the Kerry Wood/Adam Dunn incident earlier this year.

Hope Jimy didn't swear at the umps, he might get suspended, too.

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hope Jimy didn't swear at the umps, he might get suspended, too. "

If you have seen the Seinfeld episode where George goes out with a couple of guys from the Astros management, those s.o.b.'s do not mind swearing.

earlnash, Monday, 10 May 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you get to see that, mattbot? It was blacked out on the cable at my parent's over the weekend, so I missed it, but I heard some of it on the radio. The guy on the post-game call-in show after yesterday's game didn't seem to think he would get suspended, just fined. That's so weird because Oswalt never loses his cool even a little bit.

I expect Jimy to get suspended because apparently he bumped the ump, although he's claiming the ump bumped him.

Did you see the play that started all of it? The phantom HBP? I haven't seen a replay of it, so it's hard for me to comment on the whole situation, but Astros seemed fairly convinced that the 2B umpire had no business overruling the home plate ump on the play.

boldbury (boldbury), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I had the TV on and only started paying close attention when Oswalt got into a jam (he was absolutely filthy before that, btw). I didn't see the HBP but I saw the pitches Oswalt was upset about. They were borderline pitches, but according to the Braves announcers the home plate ump had been calling them strikes all game. I think Oswalt had a pretty legit beef, but the ump totally blew the situation out of proportion with his theatrics (as has happened many times this year, it seems).

What I thought was surprising was that Oswalt didn't lose his cool until he was in the dugout. Whoever was coaching at that point (Hooton?) went out to the mound to change pitchers but didn't go to the ump first, ensuring that the ump had to come out to the mound to get the pitching change info while Oswalt was still there. Roy didn't say a word as he left the mound, didn't shout back at the ump, didn't do anything until he saw the box of gum in the dugout. He gave it a ride though, and if you'll pardon the expression, it was pretty sweet.

Holy shit.

One of the most incredible at-bats I've ever seen. Alex Cora, after fouling off FOURTEEN PITCHES from Matt Clement on a 2-2 count, hits a 2 run dong to right.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 13 May 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it deserved it's own thread.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 13 May 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure which is more depressing, continuing to throw Alex Cora strikes with a 2-2 count for 14 goddamned pitches until it turns into 2 runs or having four infield hits + a blown call by the ump turn into 2 runs.

Or getting shut the fuck out by Wilson Alvarez. Again.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 13 May 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

And Wilson Alverez was sitting on the bench for the Texas Metrosexuals.

Start him whenever he gets within 1000 miles of the Cubs.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Cubs kick off a stretch of really important division games this afternoon: 3 vs. STL, 2 at HOU, 4 at PIT, 3 vs. HOU, 3 vs. PIT, 4 vs. STL

Then interleauge play starts and things don't get much easier: 3 at ANA, 3 at HOU, 3 vs. OAK, 3 at STL, 3 at CHW.

Unfortunately, the Cubs DL could beat half the majors right now, but they should get a lot of help back in early June if all goes as planned. Kerry Wood is only expected to miss one more start as they reinstated his suspension and appeal.

Picked up tickets this morning to see Prior on the 30th in Des Moines!

Oswalt was unhittable last night. Two shaky outings in a row for Zambrano, which probably means he's 130 pitches away from needing Tommy John surgery given the way this season has gone so far.

You know something's not right when Cubs fans care more about the Lansing Lugnuts than they do about a game against the Astros. .500 baseball until mid-June would be a great thing for this team.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Cubs did get Mike Remlinger back off the DL this week, considering the injuries to starters, they are going to need all of the bullpen help they can for the next few weeks. I think Mercker is due back off the DL pretty soon.

I just hope Rusch can keep pitching well, he has done OK in his couple of starts filling in for Wood.

Patterson seems to be a sucker for the outside pitch. If I was facing him, I would never throw him a strike.

earlnash, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I must say I'm happy where the Cubs are at, almost having the best record in the NL, considering Prior hasn't tossed a pitch yet, Sosa is out, Patterson can't hit again, Wood has been out a couple of weeks, and Borowski is pitching like Mike Williams.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

That blown double header reminded me of a personal low point as a Cub fan. 1991 when I was in college the Cubs were playing a double header against the Pirates and had hit two grand slams and were up like 16 to 3 in the fourth inning. I was sitting around with my roommates drinking beer and bragging how they had the game in the bag and then the absolute bottom fell out, Van Slyke and Bonilla both hit grandslams and Bonds hit a triple that drove in three more and they beat the Cubs like 18 to 17. In the second game of the double header, the Cubs blew a three run lead in the ninth and then lost the game in 12th. I got crap about that day for a couple of years.

Good news...

The schizophrenic offense when into overdrive and scored a dozen keeping the Pirates from a sweep.

Mark Prior is starting Friday night.

earlnash, Monday, 31 May 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

During yesterday's win over Houston, Rick Sutcliffe declared that Greg Maddux's bat -- "putting the ball in play," I think -- nets him 2 or 3 extra wins a season. Maddux lifetime: .176, 4 homers, strikes out a quarter of his PA's (not bad, but still).

Even a hitter of Mike Hampton's caliber probably accounts for just one win a year with his bat. Which means, yep, ESPN *does* employ at least one bigger idiot than Kruk or Reynolds.

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I listened to some sports radio this morning and Cubs fans were calling in ragging on Patterson. One dude said that Corey's being booed because he made some statement about not changing his approach to hitting whether he's batting .320 or .220, second in the order or seventh. The complaint, supposedly, is that he's not trying.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 June 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i think anytime you've got a slumping, undisciplined hitter, that's a complaint. cubs fans will have to learn to live with it (as i tried to do w/ soriano).

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 3 June 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Sports talk radio is pretty much filled with blow hards, whether they host the show or are callers. Some towns are a bit more harsh than others like Cleveland, those people are insane.

I remember listening to Chicago sports talk after seeing the Bears get routed on Monday Night Football a few years ago by the Vikings. Harbaugh had been sacked nine times, hit every play he dropped back and the team rushed for a total of like six yards the entire game, yet every caller blamed Harbaugh for losing the game. Complete lunacy. My buddies and I had a pretty good laugh about that one.

The Pirates have the second best batting average in the NL according to Chip 'n Steve.

Cubs offense manages to find new ways to not score with the bases loaded and less than two out. HOWEVER the 6th inning saw Corey Patterson get a standing ovation for taking a walk, so it wasn't a complete wash.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 4 June 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Enough of these extra inning games, but at least we won. And what the hell are we doing with Rey Ordonez??

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 14 June 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hard to believe Rey can barely top the numbers of Damian Jackson. And the former Gold Glover's got at least two glaring errors I can bring to mind immediately, maybe more. I never thought I'd think it, but man, it'll be nice when Alex Gonzalez gets back.

In other news, Jason Dubois rots on the bench while Jose Macias goes 0-7 today and, like clockwork, Derrek Leeee is heating up.

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It was nice how Jose Macias swung at balls that were clearly already in the catcher's mitt.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 14 June 2004 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there any poor teams that the Cubs could cherrypick a good SS from?

I liked how they worked it last year down the stretch, it was like the Tribune realized it is a big badd corporation and started going out and screwing over some other teams.

I just hope the Pirates don't decide the lift their skirts again and give them Jack Wilson.

boldbury (boldbury), Monday, 14 June 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Rey O was always overrated defensively (the acrobat factor), as well as a Black Hole at the bat.

>this is why you have a decent closer. Three outs and you win the game, if you can make it happen most of the time<

You're proving the point .. A "decent" closer can do it "most of the time." Not a guy you have to pay $6-8 million for 70 innings.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 14 June 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe the Cubs can trade for Jeter. (tee-hee)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 June 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cubs are showing those A's who the better team is. Also, Derrek Lee is suddenly the best player on the team, he went 3 for 3 today, after recent games of 5 for 5 and 4 for 4. Remember back at the beginning of the year when people were hinting that Hee Seop Choi might make the Cubs regret the trade?

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh heh, I really like Lee a lot, but Hee Seop's unquestionably having the better season per dollar spent at the plate:

Lee: .310, .387 OBP, .916 OPS, 9 HR, 44 RBI
Hee: .266, .383 OBP, .921 OPS, 12 HR, 31 RBI

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 21 June 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Forgot to include the most important stat:

Lee: $6,166,667
Hee: $310,000

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 21 June 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

just wait on Lee, give him a couple more months... he's a notorious slow starter. he's worth every penny in my book.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Lee's like a vacuum cleaner over at first. And he can run the bases!

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It is worth saying again, the Cubs front office has been pretty savvy in the past year or so. Lee, Walker, Hawkins, Barrett, Rusch, Maddux, Hollandsworth and even Mercker have all been good pickups. When you add in Ramierez from last year, that is some fine work bringing in talent.

Rusch and Hollandsworth have both done a good job filling in for Wood and Sosa. They are a big reason the Cubs have been able to keep pace.

earlnash, Monday, 21 June 2004 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

When the Cubs are completely healthy they're going to be scary. The numbers that Ramirez and Alou have put up this year have been beyond anyone's expectations I think.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 21 June 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I was definitely among those lamenting the Lee/Hee trade until the 6-1 win over the Pirates a few weeks back. Everyone is singing his praises at first, and the oft-discussed June transmogrification is taking place as we speak. However, I do encourage "Rodan" to work on that next year, as the "I warm up in June" thing gets worn out a bit during the April/May haul.

All that said, I really miss the HEE!! SEOP!! CHOI!! HEE!! SEOP!! CHOI!! chant they (we) got going a few times at Wrigley last year.
Fun.

gusbot (eternal_fields), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow! Another late inning comeback. If Rolen wasn't having such an over the top season, Rameriez would be the Allstar starter at 3b, it isn't like he isn't playing well enough to deserve the job.

Farnsworth seems to have figured it out of late, he is back to 3-3 and his ERA is getting down into the low 3's, which takes awhile as a reliever.

Beating the Cards in St.Louis is always good.

earlnash, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Shame Maddux couldn't have finished off the Cards in the 7th to get #296. And how bizarre was it that both catchers dropped on-target throws that would've cut down the go-ahead run at the plate? I mean, I guess it isn't so surprising from Bak0, but Matheny?

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

How long has Matheny been off of the DL? Hasn't he been on the shelf for around of month?

earlnash, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Matheny has been back like a week I think, but they are keeping the little Molina and McKay around to spread out the games until Matheny is back 100%. Also Matheny's hitting tends to dip dramatically after the first two months of the season, so I think the kids give the Cards a chance for a bit more pop from the 8th spot.

Also Pujols just jacked one :)

But he only plays when Maddux starts, & when Barrett gets himself tossed, so it's not TOO bad, though one would wish Maddux would pick a caddy w/ more ... what's the word I'm looking for ... skill?

Also - wait until A-Gonz returns.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Lenny Harris was at least a decent pinch hitter. Damon Berryhill where are you now when your club needs you most.

That error last night in the seventh was similar to the one A-Gonz booted in the playoff. So Tamaguchi is the bane of the Cubs.

I was feeling pretty quesy when I saw that the heart of the Cards lineup was coming up in the bottom of the eighth and Dusty wasn't going to change relievers. Baker should have gotten Hawkins up and went to him to face those guys, considering they are freaking killing everybody, you might want to have your best reliever try and shut them down.

Sorry to flood the Cubs thread, but... Wow.
--
Reliever Steve Kline threw a tantrum in the Cardinals' bullpen when he warmed up but didn't get the call in the sixth inning Wednesday night and made an obscene gesture toward manager Tony La Russa.

La Russa was unaware of Kline's sixth-inning display until queried after the Cards' 10-9 victory over the Cubs at Busch Stadium.

"He did that?" La Russa asked.

Told that a television feed confirmed it, the manager cut off a news conference, saying, "Give me two minutes and I'll be standing on top of his chest kicking the (bleep) out of him."

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

You generally don't see such horseshit bullpens in playoff baseball (OK, the Cards' isn't too bad, but the Cub numbers aside from Hawkins are ugly) ... I was flipping back and forth with Mets-Reds and missed the passed ball. Looks like Babe Barrett picked the wrong night for manly self-expression.

Since the Cubs ain't hurting for dough, I think the upgrade to Lee over Hee is arguably worth the $6 mil, or at least not the worst way to spend it. And you don't have to wait for Lee to start sizzling: .434/.494/.803 in June.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Cubs gotta do something about their pen ASAP.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 June 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Cubs/Cards errors sorta wash last night. Simply not catching the ball in a critical situation with a man on third in a big game is the one that's sorta beyond the pale and totally in keeping with surreal Cubs traditions. You know, the way I look at it is this: IF YOU ARE GOING TO FLIRT WITH THE MENDOZA LINE FOR YOUR ENTIRE CAREER AS A CUB, PLEASE DO YOUR BEST TO BE SERVICEABLE DEFENSIVELY!!

emphasis mine!

gusbot (eternal_fields), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the announcers were attributing Bako's ole to his lack of experience catching hard throwers (since he only catches Maddux) which is justifiable, maybe, if you're feeling soft, and the catcher was in the game throughout, but come on - it's not like a knuckleball caddy playing catch with Wakefield for 8 innings and then having to handle Mitch Williams in the 9th.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it all makes tonight's game HUGE. I'm not too discouraged by the outcome last night. Though undermined by shitty errors, the Cubs were in it the whole way, and I imagine the Birds are relieved to have won after the Cubs gave Colero the Abu Ghirab treatment in the sixth. To take two of three in that park will be very much acceptable to me.

gusbot (eternal_fields), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The first thing they teach a catcher as a kid is to block the ball with your body, not to ole' it with the glove.

At least going by the past couple of seasons, the Cubs/Cards may be the most heated current rivalry in the NL. Of course, I don't think a Cub fan has shot a Cards fan yet like what happened at that Dodger/Giant game last year, so maybe not.

earlnash, Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The rivalry is pretty heated but it also has this undercurrent of grudging respect to a large degree. I think the nastiest rivalry in recent years, aside from the BoSox/NYY one was a brief bit of ugliness over the course of a couple of seasons between the Brewers and the White Sox.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

To be fair to Bako, that was a wicked pitch: fast as hell and it started breaking up and to the right.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Bako can only catch feathers and cotton candy.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Catchers catch unexpected pitches all the time. It's their job. Like the gusbot said, if he's going to be sub-Mendoza at the plate, then catch the damn ball (two nights in a row now he's failed to that basic task). See: Damien Miller 2003.

As far as the rivalry goes, the schedulemakers made it so that the last Cubs-Cards game is July 20. Which is pretty dumb considering how made-for-TV the 5-game set last September was. Gotta clear schedule space in September for that heated Cubs-Expos rivalry, I guess.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

How the hell do you do away with 19 games between two of the most storied franchises in baseball history by the 3rd week of July!?!?! Would someone please pop a cap under Bud & his entourage?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus, the Astros and Cubs will be done playing each other by the end of August. No September matchups for the two team expected to battle it out for the division title.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I was shocked to see Bako is batting .210. I must be listening and not watching when he gets his raps.

Anyway, mattbot and other Cubs fans, did you happen to hear Santo Tuesday night when Sosa was trying to score the go-ahead run and it looked as though he would be out by plenty? Santo let loose this gutteral groan of dread (again walking on the Hughes call) only to be pleasantly surprised by the outcome of the play. Hilarious. (Perhaps this belongs on the radio/TV thread, but . . .)

Also, last night, Santo was totally befuddled by Dusty and none too happy about it. He sounded MOROSE.

gusbot (eternal_fields), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The schedule is all sorts of unbalanced this year, at least for the Cubs. This stretch of games against the top of the AL West, and home and aways with the ChiSox and the Astros and Cardinals is brutal. Late August into Sept. features blocks of games as follows: MON, FLA, MON, FLA, PIT, CIN, PIT, NYM, CIN. How about some variety, jesus.

gusbot: I usually can't get radio broadcasts unless I'm listening in the car, so I didn't catch Santo the other night. I was groaning too before Matheny dropped the ball.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, blowing so much of the cards/cubs series early in the season is pretty annoying. The games *have* been intense, but it'll be a shame if these teams are still fighting for first in late summer and we don't get to see 'em get at each other.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The answer is probably no, but can Mark Grudzielanek play SS? It couldn't be any worse and he is a decent hitter.

earlnash, Friday, 25 June 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

After checking Baseball-Reference, Grudz was a starting SS for a couple of seasons with the Expos when he came up and got moved in 2000 to 2b by the Dodgers. I'm sure he has lost a bit of range in a four years, but criminy SS has become a black hole of late and it might be time to try something drastic.

earlnash, Friday, 25 June 2004 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a blurb in the Sun-Times (I think) just before Grudz came off the DL that said he was working on turning double plays with Walker. It's worth a shot. In the meantime, Hendry needs to work on calling up Jack Wilson from the AAAA club.

Ordonez is a bona fide five tool fuck up.

earlnash, Monday, 28 June 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cubs played like garbage today -- 3 errors, one terrible baserunning display by Corey Patterson (completely faked out by Jose Valentin), and a really awful start by Maddux. It helped overcome a shaky start by Esteban Loaiza, so no complaints here.

Sox now just 1 game back of the Twins, while the Cubs are tied for 2nd, 5 behind the surging Cards.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 22 July 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Which begs one of my favorite Very Deep Sports Questions: who would you rather have on YOUR team?

I think I'd take Maddux at just about any point in his career, with the possible exception of the first half of this year.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 22 July 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

you've just called down the VORPers on that one.

I'd take Maddux as well, though.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 22 July 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Maddux has definitely came through like a pro in his past two starts, very big considering how ugly other games have been.

They probably won't catch the Cards, but if they can keep things together, they have a favorable schedule the last month or so and could win the wildcard slot.

Keep in mind Maddux is 38 and Clemens will be 42 in couple of weeks. Even at his age, Clemens still has more overpowering stuff, but Maddux has always been a crafty pitcher and just trys to get outs throwing the least amount of pitches.

I think Maddux has the physical and mental makeup to be someone who could continue to be effective for another three or four years. Maddux could end up winning 350 games, which has only been done once since WWII (Warren Spahn - 363) and Spahn was the first since Walter Johnson in the 20s.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Last 20 years:

#1 - Clemens
#2 - Maddux
#3 - Big Unit

Pedro a likely #4 depending on what's ahead.

You break down the numbers, Clemens gets the edge particularly cuz he's been pitching to lineups with DHs. Rob Neyer did an anlysis last year where he concluded the two best post-WW2 pitchers were Seaver and Clemens, order pending.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 23 July 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd go with that list. Pedro and The Big Unit at their best are/were both way more overpowering than Maddux, but that was never his game. The thing with Maddux is the consistency and the ability just to get hitters out without really having an overpowering fastball.

If Clemens decides to stick around for another year or two, he could be next guy to 350 wins. He is still on pace to win 20, which would put him above Steve Carlton and into the top 10 list. He might call it quits, depending on whether or not Houston decides to stand pat next year and try to make a run or start rebuilding.

Kerry Wood threw a good game tonight beating the Phillies, I hope it is the beginning of a run. I'd like to see the Cubs get on roll and get on top of the wildcard. Looks like the Giants are also going to beat the Cards.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Saturday, 24 July 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Well it is obvious now that Hawkins doesn't have the mental makeup to be a closer.

I think for all of the people who underrate the closer position around here just need to look at this years Cubs team, who have blown eight or nine games in the ninth. Stick a 95% closer on this team, and we are still in the race.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Jose Mesa and Uggy Urbina are still being thrown around as potential acquisitions, but Hendry mentioned a few days back wanting to try Ryan Dempster in the closer role. Obviously I haven't seen him pitch but it sounds like his velocity's back but he doesn't yet have the stamina to be a starter. One of the papers reported today he'll get one or two more starts at Iowa before being called up but that he'll work "seventh and eighth inning situations" with the Cubs.

I'm a little surprised they haven't tried Farnsworth yet.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Baker did use Farnsworth inbetween Hawkins last two meltdowns, as he closed out the last two wins that were not complete games.

Dempster is a LOOONG shot for anything, the Reds gave him a shot for a couple of years and he didn't give them squat and they gave up Juan Encarnacion to get him, who has continued to be a solid player with both the Marlins and this year with the Dodgers.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm not sure what to make of Dempster. He's definitely a reclaimation project, and he's put up solid numbers in his rehab. I'm not sure he'll ever be a starter for the Cubs, but

(I just looked up his AAA numbers)

Actually, he may not be any sort of answer for this bullpen. 10 walks and 18 hits in 20 innings, a 4.05 ERA... hmm. I wonder where I got this "solid numbers" impression?

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

FYI: Encarnacion is as solid as Silly Putty. His best "year" was actually the first half of 2K2 he offered to Cincy (277/330/474); otherwise he's been a league average hitter w/ a low 400 slugging and no patience; his K/BB ratio suggests he's a free-swinging out machine. He's a decent OF option to bat in the bottom 3rd, but the way Werth & Grabowski have performed, he's a surefire #5.

To quote an annoying Cox commercial:

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

For as bad as the Cubs have seemed to played in the last month, they are still 13-12 in July, it just seems worse. They are only a game out of the wild card, so the season is not yet lost.

Encarnacion had a decent year last year with Florida and is good with the glove. Dempster did less than nothing with the Reds. The Reds didn't get much for Jose Guillen either. They had a ton of outfield talent, but wasn't able to turn it into pitching.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 30 July 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

the cubs will still win the wild card, probably the pennant, upsetting the cardinals, then the sox will beat the yanks and fox will be so happy

Whatta game. Just watching on tv I could sense the place buzzing, hadn't really heard that since the playoffs last year. Nomar got a huge standing ovation in his first at-bat and promptly grounded into a double play which made me chuckle.

I didn't see any sign of a bum or tender ankle. He ran the basepaths hard, even had a runner roll over his right ankle as he stretched to make a catch early in the game. Didn't seem to have much of a problem judging the wind on fly balls (*cough* Grudz *cough*), and generally looked really enthused to be there.

Too bad Maddux couldn't get 300 because he pitched pretty well and his next outing will be against Jason Schmidt at SFO I think. Cubs have won 8 of 12 since the tantrum series with STL.

mattbot (mattbot), Sunday, 1 August 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 6 August 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Prior was hit and miss today. A couple of encouraging signs: he threw more breaking balls, and they had more movement than in previous starts, and he was able to get out of jams with the strikeout.

Giving up no runs in Coors is nothing to scoff at, but he let four of six leadoff men reach base and he still isn't locating his fastball as well as he did last year.

But a promising start. And really, when Prior is the weak link (at least by ERA) of the pitching staff, it's hard to nit-pick. I just hope he's not hiding an injury.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 6 August 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not worried about Prior. His stats at season-end won't be mind-boggling of course but he'll be good the rest of the way.

Stephen Nidetz of the Tribune takes a bite of Sammy today:

Memo to Sammy Sosa:

It's time to give it up, big guy.

You're 35 years old but no longer the constellation-busting supernova of the late 1990s. Your skills have diminished to the point that you are nothing but the hole in the Cubs' scrumptious bagel of a lineup.

Despite the occasional dinger, you have left more men stranded this season than Paris Hilton.

Never that great a defender, you are now the Chevy Chase of the Cubs' outfield.

Memo to Dusty Baker:

If you insist on continuing to play Sosa, it's time to move your cleanup slugger down in the lineup as befits a man hitting only .223 since the All-Star break and only .143 in late innings of close games.

How far down?

With the production of Nomar Garciaparra added to the heavy lumber of Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee, the eight hole would be a good place to start. Except when Kerry Wood or Mark Prior are starting. Then No. 9 might be more fitting.

I'm no Sammy fan, to say the least. But this is just fucking ridiculous (in addition to being atrociously written). No one with a .900 OPS needs to be batting 8th. The solution to me at least is simple: break up Sosa and Alou in the lineup.

I would suggest that these are better places to look if one wants to critcize the Cubs lineup:
- Alou's 1.100/.657 home and road OPS inconsistency
- Patterson's .324 OBP at the top of the order
- The 7th worst team OBP in the majors
- The criminal platooning of Grudzilanek with Walker, who has the fourth-best OPS and second-best OBP of active Cubs

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Something tells me this guy is only looking at Sammy's BA, because everything else is what one would expect from him, especially considering he missed a month and some change with a BACK injury, for fuck's sake. Occasional dinger? If he were playing a full season, he'd have 45-50 this year. Fucking moron.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a feeling this is another example of Local Journalist Takes It Upon Himself to "Spark" a Player.

Sammy's doing exactly what everyone expects a #4 hitter to do, hit HRs and strike out a lot. He looks worse than usual doing the latter this year, but he leads the team in HR/AB (12.6 AB per).

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

haha!

but Sammy's played in 80 games this year. If we make it 160, here's his stats:

not bad!

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

B-b-but Sammy very often is the downfall of any potential Cubs rally. What's his average with RISP? His hitting of late has just been awful. He's trying to pull every pitch, even when it's a foot outside. He doesn't remember how to hit singles the opposite way. At this point, I think the team would be better off with Hollandsworth in the lineup instead of Sammy.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh don't get me wrong, I think Sammy's exclusively a mistake hitter (though he's been missing even those lately) due to standing 10 feet off the plate and opening up his lead shoulder early trying to pull pitches on the outside corner. Probably the saddest part of his recent slump is that pitchers are giving him plenty of hittable pitches because they don't want to give Ramirez or Lee shit to hit.

But to preface a suggestion with "if you insist on continuing to play Sosa"... I mean, come on. I hate it when columnists heap hyperbole on top of ignorance.

Sosa's not the biggest problem with the Cubs offense.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Derrek Lee is performing:

A) Above expectations
B) At expectations
C) Below expectations

Personally, there is no reason at all why he should be batting #6. He is a #3 hitter if there ever was one.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Who's hitting #3 for Los Cubs? Wait - lemme intuit their current batting order:

1) Walker
2) Nomah
3) Sosa
4) Alou
5) Ramirez
6) Lee
7) Patterson
8) Barrett
9) Sluggy Farnsworth

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

3) Lee
4) Ramirez
5)/6) Sosa/Alou whoever's hitting.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Lee is performing well enough to make me forget all about his frigid start. I have a little spreadsheet to keep track of who's "hot," Lee leads the team in OPS since June 1.

If I were in charge I'd sandwich Sosa between Lee at #3 and Ramirez at #5. I don't like Sosa and Alou hitting back to back because they're just so similar. A pitcher approaches the two in the exact same way: don't throw a fastball on the first pitch, then go away away and further away until they're sitting on the bench or bitching to the ump.

And for the love of God play Todd Walker every day. Grudz's lightning left his bottle in April.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Dusty's Sosa-love seems slightly similar to TLR's McGwire-love in his retirement season. (But Sosa is nowhere near as ineffective as the hobbled Big Mac was.)

'Sensitive' Sosa won't be moved down

Manager Dusty Baker thought about moving Sammy Sosa down in the lineup after he went 2-for-24 in Denver and San Francisco. How far he didn't say, but it could be fifth or sixth since Sosa usually bats third. He was in the No. 4 role again Tuesday night against San Diego.

Baker said he didn't make the move because of how Sosa would react.

"I considered it," Baker said. "We can't lose him psychologically and spiritually. Talk is talk. Nobody has to live with this but us. So I'll just leave it as talk."

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

He was too busy slotting Macias into the 2 hole to worry about Sosa.

The Cubs clubhouse seems off this year. I can't quite put my finger on it, but Todd Walker's gone to the press about his disappointment with his playing time, Sosa's batting stance and position has been questioned publicly by Dusty, and Dusty steered clear of trying to get Zambrano under control (understandable, I guess). It's not really a ch*m*stry issue, because they all play well enough on the field. Just surprising that a fair amount of bitching and moaning has oozed out of the clubhouse of the ultimate "player's manager."

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"Forfend" is a fantastic word.

What's the story w/ Sosa's stance?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It's nice Dusty agrees that Sosa's ego > Cubs W/L record.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Sosa's positioning himself way back in the box such that he can't physically reach strikes on the outside corner unless he sort of throws his whole body at the pitch. In which case he'll hit singles to right, which is actually a good thing. The problem is that Sosa uses his uppercut pull swing on almost everything, and he looks really bad striking out on pitches away, feuling speculation that he's standing farther away than usual. Dusty's noted as much to the press but said something to the effect of he can't change Sammy's stance for him.

There's still some debate as to whether he's always stood this far away or not, I still haven't seen a comparison between this year's stance and, say, 98-01's stance. He's always stood fairly far away from the plate because he has pretty slow hands and pitchers used to jam him inside, but it seems to me that he just hasn't been the same hitter since he got beaned by Solomon Torres last year. My amateur analysis: he's not willing to attack the ball away because he has to start lunging so early (because his hands are slow), that it leaves him exposed to the high and tight pitch that shattered his helmet last year.

He still gets really uptight and glare-y when pitchers come up and in on him.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

AFAICT, Sosa never has stood so far from the plate as this year, and I think it has to do with his being beaned. Supposedly the homer he hit last night to break his slump resulted in part because he stood 4-5 inches closer to the plate. (I didn't see it.)

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

If I recall, his stance in '98-'01 was more relaxed, his hands were a little lower over the plate, and when he stepped up to the plate he didn't seem to be as jumpy and anxious-looking up there. Especially in '01, when the whole season he was great to watch (by far his best year too)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought he did; he froze Klesko on a breaking pitch on the inside corner. Would have ended the inning if I recall. Bruce F. thought otherwise, Prior unraveled and four runs scored that inning. It would've been a passable no-call if it hadn't been called a strike consistently later in the game.

They were just interviewing beat writer Paul Sullivan on WGN during the delay, got in a nice jab about "Bruce Froemming screwing the Cubs for 30 years." There's some history with him and the Cubs that goes back to a Milt Pappas perfect game bid, I guess. Do a find for "Froemming" on the page.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Thursday, 12 August 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Small consolation:

Umpire Bruce Froemming ruled a hard-sliding Long safe at second as Garciaparra sidestepped him before throwing the ball past first for an error. Cubs manager Dusty Baker came out to argue, and replays showed that Garciaparra's foot hit the bag.

And Froemming admitted after the game that he missed the call.

"You don't like it to happen. On the field I had him coming across the bag, I came in here and looked at the replay. I wanted to know if I had it right. I did not have it right," Froemming said.

"You don't like to miss them. But I mean I looked at the replay and it's clear that he got the bag."

Somewhat unrelated, and I know this sounds like total sour grapes and annoying homerism, but after watching the Cubs drop 2 of 3 to both the Giants and Padres, I'm firmly convinced that the Cubs are their only competition for the NL Wild Card.

Since I offended the Chisox fan with a Steven Goldman razz-quote, here's SG last week on the Wrigleys:

"Winning, but floating just above the league floor for on-base percentage, like some mutant flounder hovering in the aquatic twilight zone. Superb pitching (2.76 ERA on the week) props them up... The slow, impatient slugger Ernie Banks is 'Mr. Cub,' but it would have been better for everyone's health if the strategic role model had remained Smiling Stan Hack, the patient, speedy third baseman. Hack's Cubs won more pennants than Banks' Cubs, 4-0, and more than Sosa's Cubs, too. Getting on base is the sine qua non of offense and the Ursines have done without it for too many decades."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 13 August 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Not since the 2004 Astros has a team with so much talent played so poorly.

I've been a Cubs fan for almost 20 years and even though they played like shit for most of that time, this year there's something different. I don't like Sammy, I loathe Moises Alou, and Dusty can't put his best nine players on the field to save his life. The team whines. Todd Walker sits. Fans boo. Everyone cries about injuries despite the fact that basically the entire team has been back to help the Cubs go 23-24 since the 10-9 come-from-ahead loss in late June to the Cards that started their spiral out of contention in the Central.

Expectations are a bitch.

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

More than the expectations and Sosa's slump, the bullpen is the Cubs achilles heel. You definitely cannot put this slump for the past week or so on Nomar as he is playing quite well.

On a brighter note, Patterson is playing really well and seems to be back to form that he was showing before he got hurt last year.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I'm putting the brunt of the blame on the 'pen. 7th and 8th innings is when we lose the majority of games. The Farns is frustatingly and extremely erratic. Where the fuck is Borowski? If we had him, Latroy could be the setup man instead of the rotation of chumps we've got now.

I'm a big Patterson fan. I've always loved guys who have great speed, and he looks like he'll just get better and better.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 19 August 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

uh - are you sure you want borowski back¿ after the start he had¿

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 19 August 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Hah, our first Borkowski/Borowski crazy mix-em-up!

Joe Borowski is set to begin a rehab at AAA Iowa. Sounds like things are going well for him, and if he's throwing 92-93 like he was last year he'll be a good addition to the pen.

As much as I said I didn't like the team a few posts up, Patterson is one of my all-time favorites already. He's a good conception of the strike zone away from being an absolute terror.

I would be surprised to see Farnsworth back next year. He can peddle his "electric stuff" elsewhere for all I care.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 19 August 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Er wait, dyson probably meant the start to Borowski's season. The Borkowski/Borowski-O-Meter still sits at zero. My bad.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 19 August 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Farnsworth has always been hot/cold as a pitcher, he reminds me a bit of "the wild thing", so I am really glad he isn't the closer.

The thing I really find troubling is ususally dependable vets like Remlinger and Mercker choking up and failing against the very teams that the Cubs need to beat to get to the playoffs.

The bullpen has cost the Cubs probably at least 10 games in the standings. The Cubs hitting has also been hot/cold and tends to score in bunches, so there have been a few really good starts by Wood and Clement that were for not.

Patterson really has improved since going back into the lead off slot. Earlier this season pitchers was fooling him with the outside stuff, now he seems to be a bit more patient and not afraid to go the other way. Having some speed at the top of the order is a big bonus.

Zambrano needs to relax a bit and get into some Carlton meditation or develop some Dave Stewart death ray eyes. Carlos seems to blow a fuse every mistake like that wild pitch last night. I like that Zambrano gets into it, but last year during the playoffs he seemed to lose focus a bit.

They need to play Walker nearly every day, he just provides so much more hitting and another left handed bat in the lineup.

Did anyone see the game Sunday? Oswalt melted down, probably figured he could get away with the plunk but it was WAY too obvious. I don't know about Wood, he might have been sending a message in code or something. It was a fun game to watch, unlike the Sunday before that where they came unglued and blew the game.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the problem with the Cubs rotation is right now they have 2 pitchers who I worry about handling the pressure, and that would be Zambrano and, surprisingly, Prior. Kerry Wood is a guy who I don't worry about one bit in the big games, and the way Clement came up in the playoffs last year, I'm not too worried about him either.

The top of the 8th today was perhaps more sick than Farnsworth's meltdown. Berkman deserves an oscar for his performance on being "hit by pitch". I don't think it touched his head, I think it hit the bat. Either way, what an ugly inning. I hope Beltran is OK, he is a class player, even if he completely demolished Cub pitching this weekend. It looked like the pitch hit Beltran right on the kneecap. OUCH!

Add these two against the Astros with the two total bullpen meltdowns against the Cardinals, the let downs against SF, LA and SD and I don't see any reason to trust the Cub relivers in a tense playoff situation.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah...Ryan Dempster created today's debacle, Remlinger added to the bleeding, but no outs and the bases loaded and a guy like Berkman batting is no place to be.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Another thing...I don't know what Jose Vizcaino's career batting average is against the Cubs, but it is probably better than Stan Musial.

Beware the journeyman. I remember that Mike Scioscia hit like Ted Williams against the Cubs. I swear he hit most of his career HRs in Wrigley.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Neifi Perez was recalled from AAA Iowa.

This makes how many middle infielders on the Cubs roster?:

Nomar
Grudz
Walker
Ramon Martinez
Jose Macias

Ah, Dusty, I don't miss you at all.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Possible scenario: Cubs have semi-comfortable lead in late innings, Dusty flips Nomar for Neifi, Cubs bullpen screws the pooch (because of a Neifi error!), Neifi ends up at bat in a crucial situation & chokes, Cubs lose game.

Cubs starter leaves in third inning

Associated Press

CHICAGO - Chicago Cubs starter Matt Clement had to leave in the third inning of Tuesday night's game with Montreal because of muscle stiffness and discomfort in his back and neck.

Clement had just given up a homer to Terrmel Sledge that gave the Expos a 2-0 lead when pitching coach Larry Rotschild and a team trainer went to the mound.

The 2 2-3 innings were Clement's shortest outing of the season. He lasted just 4 1-3 innings in his previous start against Houston and said he had a strained neck and upper back.

Glendon Rusch replaced Clement.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The game itself was a heartbreaker, though it was a game they deserved to lose -- in typical Cubs fashion, they stranded something like 14 runners in 12 innings.

I'm having serious doubts about them making the playoffs. And if they do, they're out in 4 games.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I have serious doubts, too. And to think even a .500 record in one run games would put the Cubs about 4 or 5 up in the wild card. They're an unlucky, poorly managed, injury-riddled team.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

This year's Cubs doesn't have "it".

Maddux had a good start going and was probably left in a couple of batters too long. Of course, the bullpen is so shady it wouldn't have mattered either way.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cubs are done.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

They are only a 1/2 game out, I won't go that far. They could still go on a roll...(I hope).

The Marlins and Astros are playing out of hand! It is probably better the Cubs had the weekend off, as they could have gotten swept.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing that they've done thus far could convince me they're capable of stringing anything together. What's their biggest winning streak this year, six or something modest? Their offesnse is dependent on the solo home run, and their only defense is hoping a starting pitcher goes 8 innings before their arm falls off. They play 26 games in 24 days starting Friday. The team of the nagging injury is done.

I don't have any clue how the Giants, Marlins, or Astros are winning. Likely it has something to do with getting on base, or, you know HITTING SCOTT FUCKING DOWNS.

Missing the playoffs could finally spell the end of Moises Alou's reign of baserunning terror, that's about the only positive I can see.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean wouldn't you want to put your best lineup out there in the hopes of stealing one from Pavano in Game 1 and then substituting as necessary in Game 2 against the Class A callup?

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

UNLESS the thinking is - Pavano v. Wood can match 0s (or 1s), so wait until Pavano leaves the game and THEN pull out the big guns. Not that it's a good strategy, but it makes some sense (somewhere) (to someone).

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course, that all goes out the window when the backup 3B you're starting makes 2 consecutive throwing errors that lead to at least 2 runs scored against the Cubbies.

There's a lot that BP's playoff odds report doesn't see, I'm afraid.

Moises Alou, who is playing despite numerous aches and pains, and Aramis Ramirez, who has a sore groin, did not start the first game Friday for the Cubs. Nomar Garciaparra is battling a sore Achilles and wrist, and he was expected to miss the second game.

Baker said Alou and Ramirez could see some playing time in the first game. He got advice from former manager Sparky Anderson.

"He played most of his second guys in the first game and brought them in in the sixth or seventh inning, and won the first game," Baker said of Anderson, who managed the Reds and Tigers from 1970-95. "Then, he started his regular guys in the second game. I was curious if I had the formula right or if I got it right. He said he thought that gave him the best chance to win both games."

Plus, both Alou and Ramirez are 1-for-9 against Marlins starter Carl Pavano.

"You try to do the best you can to win both games," Baker said. "You try to come up with a lineup that'll be strong today and not deplete them. We've got a tough grind here."

Naw but I think he's pitching injured. He hasn't done shit in the second half, after about 10 straight in which he threw 120 pitches and almost received a run of support.

Garciaparra's got an injured groin, but I get the same feeling about his injury that I had about Prior's, namely that the club isn't telling everyone everything. I'd be surprised to see him back before the end of the season, really.

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 20 September 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

who cares about Nomar when you got Neifi! I had a feeling something was up with Nomar when they called up TEH NEIFINATOR.

about 13 days ago (scrolling up thread) Clement threw 48 pitches and was pulled in the third for what was described as "muscle stiffness and discomfort in his back and neck".

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 September 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Garciaparra was on deck when the final out of game two was recorded. So I guess he's at least well enough to be a decoy.

I was all set to hop back on the bandwagon after the good Prior showed up and they beat Pavano in game one. Then they go and lose to David Weathers, professor emeritus in the Fogg-Downs School of Cub Bewilderment. If past performance is any indicator, they're primed for a big letdown in Pittsburgh after a quick turnaround.

Kerry Wood 8-7 3.56 -- 20 starts
Mark Prior 6-4 4.59 -- 19 starts

This has been a real up and down season. As much as the sportswriters want to tag on the Cubs for not living up to expectations, considering where they are at now in the standings and the fact that neither Wood nor Prior has had much of a season is quite an accomplishment.

Would you have thought if someone told you that Prior and Wood would both miss a dozen starts each and both be inconsistent when they do pitch that the Cubs would still have a shot at the playoffs? Probably not.

Maddux signing and his consistency was a bigger signing than probably first realized. Zambrano has been really good and Clement has been solid. Finding Glendon Rusch on the MLB scrap heap and him turning in this season has been very important, he won some key games when Wood was on the DL and has won a couple of big starts in this late push.

Cubs have nothing to worry about. The Astros are too far behind, the Giants have to play the Dodgers 4 more times, and the Cubs are playing teams with no future or nothing to prove. Even if the Dodgers or Giants dominate the other team, that helps the Cubs since the loser falls behind in the WC race.

So will anyone be held accountable or will mediocrity just be ascribed to the curse?

- Dusty will make it clear that it's not his problem, though wasting two outs to get Macias to 2nd base in the bottom of the 12th today is a neat little microcosm of how horrible of an in-game manager he is.
- Sosa managed to take over Alex Gonzalez's role in his absence. Kudos Sammy, your stubbornness at getting moved down in the order was an inspiring example of wanting the team to win above all else. Can't wait to see you back in RF next year.
- Hey Sarge, you suck. Losing 4 of 6 to the Mets and Reds does not bode well for your free-swinging HI OCTANE offense.
- Will pitch counts matter to anyone this offseason? Clement breaks down at the end of the season, Wood and Prior can barely put half a season together after last year's marathon outings. But I'm sure that's all coincidence curse.
- Would it tax Jim Hendry too much to go out and get batters who get on base instead of wasting time finding the perfect Tom Goodwins and Jose Maciases for Dusty to bat leadoff once a week?

MVPs: Aramis, Zambrano, Rusch
Bums: Alou, Sosa

The starting pitching has come around, but man the bats have really gone cold. They strike out WAY TOO freaking much.

If the Cubs would have had Randy Myers circa 93, they would have won at least ten to twelve more games this year. They need a real closer, real freaking bad.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 30 September 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The scuttlebutt on the Score today is that Steve Stone has said that he may only broadcast one more game, and if he doesn't broadcast any more, it will have been his decision alone.

This one day after ripping -- in his own subtle way -- Dusty Baker and the underachieving complainers on the team.

Very odd.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

There were rumors last year that he might take a front office job with Las Expos if they had moved to Les Vegas. I don't know, perhaps there's still some offer in DC for him. Or maybe he's just sick of watching superior talent stumble and bitch it's way through the biggest collapse since game six.

Sigh.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Apologies if this is of no interest to anyone. Stone appears to be burning his bridges (in addition to pretending to be Jack Nicholson) on the way out of town:

"You want the truth? You can't handle the truth," Stone said. "Let me tell you something, guys, the truth of this situation is [this is] an extremely talented bunch of guys who want to look at all directions except where they should really look, and kind of make excuses for what happened.

"At the end of the day, boys, you don't tell me how rough the water is, you bring in the ship. The best eight [teams] go on, the other teams go home. This team should have won the wild-card [playoff berth] by six, seven games. No doubt about it. They have the talent to do that. They're life-and-death right now."

Stone said the "defining moment" of the Cubs' collapse was their 15-7 loss to Houston on Aug. 27 at Wrigley Field when they could have extended their wild-card lead over the Astros to eight games. That game featured a confrontation between Michael Barrett and Roy Oswalt. It also included the press box phone call from Kent Mercker to complain about Stone and Chip Caray and Mercker's taunting of umpire C.B. Bucknor that netted him a suspension.

"The one game that defined this season, that allowed a team that was dead to get back in was one of the days that started a lot of problems for my partner and I, one of the best partners in the game," Stone said. "That is the Roy Oswalt game, when Kent Mercker hit him in the sixth inning. That illuminated the Houston Astros.

"They were left for dead. The Cubs beat them the first game in a three-game series, they knocked Kerry Wood out in the fifth inning, they hit four home runs [off Wood], Oswalt pitched eight innings on a day the heat factor being 95 degrees. They won 15-7, took the next two games against the Cubs.

"Instead of being buried, they got back in the race. And guess what? They're up by one game now. The Cubs had a chance to put their foot on their throat, and good teams do that. When you have a chance to eliminate a team, you don't take a personal vendetta out until that team is dead. Kill them, then you have plenty of time for personal vendettas. The Cubs didn't do that and it's coming back to haunt them."

Stone also predicted the Cubs would make some "blockbuster" moves this off-season, implying some trades would be directly tied to the team's ongoing battles with the broadcasters.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

As an outsider, this guy's not making sense. Both Prior and Wood had lengthy stays on the DL for parts of the season, is that not a legitimate excuse?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cubbies seemed to be doing just fine w/out Prior, and Prior's inconsistency since returning hasn't helped their playoff run - of course, the entire starting staff has had ups & downs recently. But haven't the Cubs' weaknesses throughout the season been their inability to get folks on base & their bullpen's crapitude? (I'm asking as someone that hasn't been paying much attention.)

Stone's point was that the Cubs were up on the Astros by 7-1/2 games at a time when they *were* healthy and had just about everyone in key positions back from the DL (except Hollandsworth), and they fired up the Astros bigtime, letting them back into the race and also fanning the flames of controversy and diversion within their own clubhouse.

Yes, David. The Cubs have been horrible at stringing hits together. If it weren't for their ability to hit HRs, they'd struggle to be a .500 club.

oops (Oops), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The key play for the 2004 Cubs may very well have been Todd Hollandsworth fouling a ball off his knee during one of the Cubs/Sox games at the Cell in June, which took him out for the season. Up to that point, he had been hitting over .300 and outperforming Sosa, who he was spelling in RF while Sosa was hurt. He's a clutch bat that they have really missed.

"Only 3 wins" (it's actually over four, but who's counting) would mean the Cubs had clinched the wild card against the Astros who are playing at their projection and the Giants who are still playing 2.5-3 games over theirs. I don't understand.

Stone is referring to any number of childish blowups both on the field and off. The team pulled a lot of that shit last year (fat Alf bumping the ump in the Cards series, Alou throwing his helmet multiple times because he's sure everyone's out to get him) but they got away with it because they were lucky to play in a very weak division.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 1 October 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

with some better luck and a couple of minor changes the Cubs could easily make the playoffs next year. I don't think a major overhaul is needed, their core is solid.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 2 October 2004 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

In Prior's defense, the guy his last two starts have been hellacious and probably the best he has done all season. Hawkins blew one game with two outs in the ninth last week against the Mets and the bats were dead in both.

I'm not completely dissapointed with this season. They seem to have been ready to come apart all year with injuries and somehow made it stick out until the final week. Criminy...it is the first time since Leo Durocher, Ron Santo, Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins and Ernie Banks in the early 70s that they put together back to back winning seasons. They have won 88 games, which is as much as last year...so it can't be a total failure.

Alou is gone. He is a tough hitter, but seems to be a pain in the ass. I think Nomar returning is at best a 50/50 proposition, he is just too fragile. It is almost like investing in Griffey.

Beltran would be the perfect pickup for this team, especially if they let Alou and Nomar go. I don't think he would come to Chicago, but at his age and talent level, he would be a perfect fit in that lineup with Patterson, Lee, Barrett and Ramierez, who are the core of the team outside the pitching. Those four players are a solid core of players to build a lineup, all of which perhaps have not yet peaked and all of which are pretty good with the glove.

I'll cut Sosa some slack and I think Cub fans should. A back injury really can kill a batter, just ask Don Mattingly who was never the same player after hurting his back. I don't think he will get back to the level he was at, but a winter off...he could improve on this year and still be a potent power hitter. I can't see Sammy leaving Chicago, it might happen, but not for at least another season.

I don't know what they are like off the field, but if I was Wood and Prior, I'd try to find out whatever The Unit and Clemens do for workouts in the offseason. Both of them are fragile and have missed a bunch of starts in their short career, maybe it wears them down, maybe they need to build up. I don't have that kind of knowledge to say for sure.

Zambrano needs to relax. A bit more poise and he could be the best pitcher in the NL. It is kind of wild to think that he was the one out of the four good young starters that kicked ass this season, especially after the shaky playoffs last year.

Clement needs to keep his chin up (ha!). It will work out, it isn't his fault that his record wasn't that good.

Maddux needs to come back next year and keep on the clockwork. I want to see him win 350.

Glendon Rusch deserves a good one year guaranteed deal to come back with an option for a second. He freakin earned it.

The Cubs frontoffice needs to figure out something about the closer position. They need to either find a good one out there, develop one or somehow reverse the aging process on Lee Smith or Randy Myers. Borowski and Hawkins probably blew a slew of saves and probably did more to bring the pressure down on the club than anything. I know I can't take them being there any longer in the ninth, those two bozos made me question the decency of man a couple of times this season.

Maybe the Cubs need to think radical and consider Clement for the closer spot, the guy already has the proper facial hair.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Saturday, 2 October 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"go back to scotland you idiot."

???

if he's not traded, patterson would be moved to left to accomadate beltran, which seems unwise. the cubs don't need a centerfielder, they need a corner outfielder who can match or surpass alou's punch. beltran would be an unnecessary luxury, and would leave the cubs with a weak offensive leftfied (if not outfield, depending on how beltran and especially sosa hit). plus, the yankees need carlos.

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 2 October 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry that was to Todd Walker (he is glaswegan ain't he? jk). but yes, I hate that "on paper" argument. The only thing that matters "on paper" is whether you outscore your opponent.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 2 October 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I would imagine if Beltran ended up a Cub, Sosa would find himself in left. Beltran definitely has more upside at the plate than Alou, who is probably on the downward arc of his career. He is also at the right age to drop a big contract, as he might not peak for a three or four years. In Moises defense, he did have a season year as the plate.

I think Alou would be a good pickup for an AL team that needs an additional big bat. He would be able to pickup at bats as a DH and wouldn't have to play the field everyday, although he is still pretty good with the glove.

Alou seems like a player that SF might go after, as he would be a good bat to put behind Bonds and they wouldn't be tied to a long term deal. I don't know if he would want to play for his father, maybe that is something they wouldn't want to do.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Saturday, 2 October 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

You see why I hate this team? Not a single one can admit that they found ways to lose very winnable games, they've played all year like a playoff berth was their right.

Cya, Chip. I accidentally caught part of the game today, it was really, really depressing. Especially knowing how many of the same aging dinosaurs could be back out there again next April.

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 4 October 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Sosa, sure. Probably not Alou, though. What other aging dinosaurs are you thinking of?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 4 October 2004 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Derek Lee's on the good side of 30, as is (the soon to be gonzo?) Nomar. Patterson's on 20's bad side. Aramis & Barrett are as well. And, excepting Maddux, the starters are ALL young. Obviously the bullpen can't age (& retire) fast enough, but otherwise Los Cubbies are not in a bad place (for a team that should've won the Wild Card going away).

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Sammy and Dusty match wits:

"I'm tired of being blamed by Dusty Baker for all the failures of this club," Sosa said. "I resent the inference that I'm not prepared. I live my life every minute every day to prepare for combat."
---
"I'd want him back if ... he's got to go to work this winter," Baker said. "Get in tip-top shape mentally and physically. It's a big year for him next year."

It's hard for me to believe Sammy said "resent the inference," but whatever.

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

It's now coming out that Sam-ME didn't leave in the 7th inning, as he claimed, but left the clubhouse at the start of the game. Baker tried to cover for him by saying he was hurting/injured, but seemed miffed that Sosa couldn't even be bothered to suit up and just ride the pine one more time. Will the Mets (stupidly, IMO) swoop in and take this cancer off the Cubs' hands next year?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it safe to say that the "Sammy = clubhouse cancer" meme started right after his corked bat went poof?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I've detested Sosa as a human being going way back, even before the 1998 season when he "saved baseball" and pretended to be bestest buddies with Mark McGwire and when he set up his sham charity, so I can't agree with the timing you suggest. There have been many reports throughout the years of Sosa pissing off his teammates with his clubhouse behavior (even telling one reporter "f*ck my teammates" when asked about his loud boombox music), and Mark Grace was very candid after he left the Cubs about his dislike of Sammy.

One thing is certain, though: when you start reading about negative Sammy stories in the Chicago Tribune, you know management is behind it, and they're trying to orchestrate his way out of the city, just as they did several years ago, when Sosa played martyr during his latest contract negotiations.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

That Mariotti column about the Mets possibly biting on Sammy's contract is all sorts of silly. As if the Mets won't try to hunt down Beltran - sweet crap, after last year's Vlad fiasco, they'd better throw some cash @ Beltran, & not settle for a guy 9 years older and 500 steps slower.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

2004 Cubs 89-73
2003 Cubs 88-74

THEY IMPROVED!

There will be sniping on all sides about the failures of this season deep into next season. There is plenty of blame to go around.

Sosa will be in the Cub lineup next season. I can't see anyone trading for him, mostly because of his salary than his skills, although he is definitely damaged goods at this point.

If the Astros make a big playoff run, I figure they will open up the pocketbook and do what it takes to keep Beltran.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

That Mets rumor has been around for the last week or so, with one variant saying the Cubs would take Cliff Floyd from the Mets and pony up some cash for part of Sosa's $17 million next year. I don't know the dynamics of the NY baseball market too well, but it's not beyond comprehension that Sosa's presence in the Mets lineup could lead to an influx of ticket sales sufficient to pay for his salary, is it? He'll hit 600 next year, and assuming he can avoid injuries again I could see him putting up much better numbers than this year.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

He'll hit 600 next year

(By this I mean he'll pass 600 career HRs, not hitting .600!)

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps more damaging:

Sosa also reportedly left early Sept. 7, departing in the middle of an extra-inning loss in which he could have pinch-hit. At the time, Sosa was not playing because of hip bursitis, but he was in the starting lineup the next day.

I think BBT is right, though, the Trib pushing this story probably means a lot.

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

From this article: http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/story/7766678

"I did the best I could. When players don't produce, the first question they ask is 'Could you have managed better?"' Baker said. "I'm always looking for stuff I could have done better. ...it was a long and gradual process."

I don't think there's a GM in baseball who isn't cognizant of Sosa's enormous looming payday ($35 million for the next 2 years), his declining production, and his immense propensity to whine and play the martyr when things start conspiring against him. Even the boneheads that run the White Sox aren't dumb enough to nibble, even if the Cubs pony up a big chunk of change as part of a deal.

oops (Oops), Friday, 29 October 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of the Cubs' players were pissed off at Stone for praising their opponents' play too much (esp. Kent Mercker) and other minor bullshit (like not giving the players cute nicknames). Mercker even called up to the broadcast booth DURING A GAME to bitch about what Stone and Chip Caray were saying. What ensued was a battle to keep Stone and Caray off the team's plane, and even physical threats from Mercker to Stone.

Dusty Baker, as is his style, refused to rein in his players, so the resentment between team and booth simmered. Toward the end of the year, thin-skinned Dusty got pissed off at Stone for his criticism of Baker's managerial moves, and got Cubs management to give the message to Stone that he should back off. Baker thought that Stoney was carrying out a personal vendetta against him, when all he was doing was criticizing his on-field moves.

Long story short, Dusty wins, the Cubs chickened out, and Stone apparently told them to fuck off, knowing that nothing will have changed in 2005.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Saturday, 30 October 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I read an article somewhere (maybe something on ESPN?) comparing the Red Sox this season to the Cubs, how the Cubs started pointing fingers and blaming everyone else for their problems + there was team turmoil, whereas the Red Sox just played loose and carefree.

Which is strange, because in '03 I thought the Cubs were playing pretty loose and carefree as well. I really think that it goes to show how a few malcontents (Sosa, Mercker, Alou, Hawkins maybe?) can fuck up team chemistry. Which, despite what SABR types might suggest, does play a role to a large degree. Like working at a miserable company vs. working at a fun company.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 30 October 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

bnw (bnw), Saturday, 30 October 2004 05:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the cubs did crash and burn at the end, but inner turmoil might be too simplistic an explanation. they weren't as good a team as the sox (w/out doubt the best team in baseball after nomar and trot returned), and they won 9 less games while enduring similar if not more detrimental injuries and playing in what was probably a tougher division. that sounds about right to me. i know it sounds terribly frigid, but the last month or two is probably best viewed objectively as a correction of sorts. (this isn't to say that chemistry plays no role, but unless you have guys out there wanting NOT to win (and that's always possible i'm sure) i find it difficult to believe that in a sport as individualistic as baseball it's ever a deciding factor.
