Coming up: Jeff Weaver will bring the highest ERA on the staff (10.61) into Wednesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles at Vero Beach. Weaver had a 6.99 ERA last spring and started the season with a 6.07 ERA in April before getting back on track. This will be his fourth start of the spring.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Jeff Weaver hasn't had much of a chance to ditch his little brother this spring, especially since Jered's locker is just across from his in the Angels' clubhouse.
Not that Jeff wants to anyway -- the lanky right-handed pitchers have become best pals.
That wasn't always the case.
"We were six years apart, and when I was in high school and he was 9 or 10 years old, he was kind of the nagging little brother who wanted to go everywhere, hang out with the big boys," Jeff said.
"It was kind of that usual sibling love-hate relationship."
Jered grinned and recalled that all he really wanted back then was some mobility.
"Because of the age difference, we didn't really hang out, didn't go to school together or anything," he said. "But when he was 16, I really wanted to hang out because he had just gotten his driver's license. Of course, he didn't want to hang out with his 10-year-old brother."
They've spent a lot of time together this spring.
"I get to see him in action, we get to hang together, go to dinner," Jeff said. "We've spent the most time that we ever have together, because we'd always been on different schedules in different places.
"So this has been really fun for me, and hopefully, we'll have it for years to come. We'll just have to wait and see."
Said Jered: "The fact he's here, we don't have to talk on the phone. If I have a problem, or if I don't understand something that's going on in camp, I can just walk over and ask him."
Jeff, 29, signed a one-year, $8.325 million contract free agent contract with the Angels last month, with another $600,000 available in performance bonuses.
After going 14-11 with three complete games, two shutouts and a 4.22 ERA in 34 starts for the Dodgers last season, he is set to follow 2005 AL Cy Young winner Bartolo and John Lackey in the Angels' rotation.
Jered, 23, was a standout at Long Beach State, where he won the Golden Spikes Award in 2004 as the country's top college baseball player. He was selected by the Angels with the 12th pick in the draft later that year, and after waiting 11 months, finally agreed to a minor league contract last June for a club-record signing bonus of $4 million. He is slated to begin this season in the minors.
It's obvious the two are related. Jeff is 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds, while Jered is 6-7, 205. Both look a bit like California surfer dudes, with their long, brownish-blond hair.
Jeff noted another similarity.
"When I finally did get to see him pitch, it was eerie because we're so similar, the mechanics," Jeff said. "I'd never worked with him on mechanics or anything, just on things like approach and what he might want to throw.
"But until I saw him pitch, I didn't realize there were so many similarities. It's easy for us to talk about pitching because we are so close in certain things we do."
There are differences, of course.
"Personality-wise, Jeff is quiet, more soft-spoken, and Jered is a little more outgoing. Jeff is stoic on the mound and Jered, maybe because of his youth, shows a lot of emotion," Angels pitching coach Bud Black said.
"I've enjoyed them in the short time we've had them. They're very engaging to talk to. And the one thing they definitely have in common is that they both love pitching and they're both very competitive."
Despite the age gap, it's obvious the brothers always have been proud of each other.
Jeff talked about Jered being "really something to watch on the basketball court" in high school. Jered spoke of how his older brother inspired him by walking on at Fresno State, making the team, then going on to the big leagues.
Even when they were younger, they had some good times together. When Jeff made it to the majors, he used to have Jered, then in high school, visit him.
"He would come out for about 10 days and stay with me and get to come in the clubhouse and hang out with the guys and kind of see how it all worked at the big league level," Jeff said. "I think all those experiences helped him through his college career, kind of understanding how difficult the game is, and dealing with adversities.
"He's a lot further along than I was at this time, that's for sure. His second-best pitch is his changeup, and that's the one that's still a work in progress for me."
Jeff grinned and added, "And he's always had a level head, a good demeanor. That's something that took me a while."

Recommendation: The Angels are willing to eat a significant portion of Weaver's salary ($8.25 million) to facilitate a deal. The Red Sox find themselves down a starter with injuries to David Wells (knee) and Matt Clement (shoulder), but may try to get by in the short term internally.

But more importantly, I got some more news from my friend who lives not far from the site of the original taco eatery.
He says that Jered Weaver brought BRETT TOMKO in with him one evening, and that same night LIZ PHAIR(!?!?!?!) showed up.
This place is pretty much a dive, I had no idea it would be such a scene.

This is actually kind of heartwarming (maybe):
Right-hander Jeff Weaver went through a 40-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday and came out of it with a big grin on his face.
He has been focusing on getting his right arm and shoulder strengthened and fine-tuning some mechanical flaws, such as using the lower part of his body more.
"I think we're making progress," pitching coach Rafael Chaves said of the session. "We are emphasizing better balance and using his legs more. The better balance he has, the more he will be able to get on top of the ball."
When that happens, the action on Weaver's pitches, especially his fastball and changeup, break down instead of sideways.
"When pitches that are supposed to go down in the zone are going down instead of left to right, you know you are on the right track," Weaver said. "I had a smile on my face when I was throwing."
Asked when the last time he smiled while on a pitching mound, he said, "Good question."
Tuesday was the first time in a long time.

After throwing 70 pitches in a simulated game on Tuesday, Weaver (15-day disabled list, shoulder) declared himself ready to return to the starting rotation, reports the Seattle Times. However, the team would like for him to go on a two-week minor league rehab assignment.
― Andy K, Thursday, 31 May 2007 10:00 (sixteen years ago) link
SEATTLE -- After all the issues Jeff Weaver has had while flopping from World Series hero for St. Louis to $8 million bust in Seattle, both he and the Mariners are trying to downplay another one: Weaver avoiding a trip to the minor leagues to rehabilitate his tired shoulder.
The Mariners wanted to send their No. 5 starter to perhaps two minor-league outings to finish a stint on the disabled list that began May 11. But Weaver said he didn't need the trip. And because he is a veteran, he had the right to refuse.
Weaver, 0-6 with a 14.32 ERA, said having a bullpen session Thursday and an 85-pitch simulated game Sunday instead is not a disagreement with his sixth team in six years.
"It was always something we were going to discuss," Weaver said Thursday before he left the Mariners clubhouse to throw with what he says is a much stronger throwing shoulder.
Earlier this week, Seattle manager Mike Hargrove told reporters that Weaver needed some minor-league starts because of the long layoff.
"He hasn't pitched competitively in three weeks," Hargrove said Tuesday in Anaheim, Calif. "It's just to see how he'll do in different game situations."
But on Wednesday, Hargrove told reporters he wasn't concerned about Weaver not pitching in a game in weeks, that a simulated game would likely be enough to lead him back into the rotation next weekend at San Diego.
On Thursday, Weaver said the Mariners asked him what he thought would be the best course to finish his DL stint. He said he did not refuse a request to make the minor-league rehab starts.
"I just really feel that I've just been getting my pitches and getting enough of my endurance up in the bullpens here," he said. "It's not like I was working through a sprain or strain. I've been throwing the whole time."
The team says Weaver has had tendinitis in the shoulder. Weaver called it "fatigue" in the joint that has since improved markedly through weight lifting.
He said he had the same shoulder fatigue while with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2005. Yet he pitched through it for 2½ weeks because he was throwing well.
"When it happened this time, I'd been struggling," he said. "So I thought it would make it worse to struggle through it."
Weaver's eventual return will likely bump Ryan Feierabend back to Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners recalled Feierabend, who debuted with them late last season, on Tuesday to start against the Angels. He will start again on Sunday against Texas.
Cha Seung Baek, who was 2-2 with a 4.60 ERA entering his start Thursday against the Rangers, has pitched well enough since arriving to replace Weaver to earn a stay -- at least while Mariners starter Horacio Ramirez remains on the disabled list. Ramirez, who has shoulder tendinitis, is eligible to return June 9.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Jered Weaver had a day to remember in his first start at Dodger Stadium, a place he revered growing up. Only he was wearing red and pitching for the opposing team.
Weaver won his fifth consecutive decision and Reggie Willits and Howie Kendrick keyed a two-out, three-run rally with RBI singles in the fifth inning, helping the Los Angeles Angels defeat the Dodgers 3-0 Saturday.
"It was pretty exciting taking the mound and having my parents be there and see their little boy finally pitch in Dodger Stadium," Weaver said. "But once you get out there, you kind of forget about that stuff and you just want to battle."
Weaver and Dodgers starter Jason Schmidt didn't give an inch through four scoreless innings, although Weaver's single to right off Schmidt in the third was his first major-league hit.
"It was definitely a lucky swing. There's no hitting ability in this body at all," said Weaver, who set aside his bat to give to his father.
Weaver (6-3) allowed four hits in 5 1/3 innings, with four walks and three strikeouts to give the Angels' rotation its major league-leading 38th win.

Cold turkey's got him on the run!
Supposedly, he either picked up or reacquired some cut slider thingy that's made him a bazillion times more effective. & the fact that he's nearly cut his ERA in half (from 14 to 7ish?) (why check stats?) is sign of that, even though a batting tee could probably "pitch" to a 7.00 ERA (if it's windy).

Playing some catch up.
9.15 John McLaren answered the question before anybody asked it.
"I'm not taking Weaver out," the Mariners manager said before the game. "At one time, he was an innings-eater, and he was winning. He was the best pitcher we had there, for about a six-game stretch."
That would be Jeff Weaver, sometimes Dream Weaver, sometimes Scream Weaver, and still a Mariners starter, at least for the time being. And so the yo-yo career arch continues — bounced from the Angels last season, World Series hero in St. Louis, worst pitcher in baseball earlier this season, best pitcher on the Mariners later on, pitching now like it's April once again.
Weaver turned in another forgettable outing Thursday night: 1-1/3 innings, six hits, five runs, all earned. In his past three starts, Weaver finished nine innings, while offenses feasted for 16 runs.
Reporters asked McLaren on Thursday if he would replace Weaver with, say, Jorge Campillo or Ryan Feierabend, starting pitching options already on the roster. McLaren said he would sleep on it, and he wondered aloud a day later whether Weaver could turn everything around. Again.
"We know he's capable," McLaren said. "I don't know if it's confidence ... I know he's not attacking the strike zone like he was."
Weaver's recent struggles combined with that of veterans Miguel Batista and Jarrod Washburn — the trio is winless since Aug. 23 — mirror the Mariners' slide out of contention. In their past 12 starts combined, the trio is 0-7 with a 7.76 earned-run average.
9.24 ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Mariners not only lost Sunday, they were bloodied.
Starter Jeff Weaver broke a fingernail on his middle finger mid-game and had the blood start gushing. It was so bad that Weaver, who had hit just five batters all season, hit three in the space of three innings.
After he hit second baseman Howie Kendrick, he had to come out of the game.
"I definitely had good stuff today," said Weaver, who put the Mariners in a 3-0 hole by giving up homers to Casey Kotchman and Macier Izturis in the second. "But after I broke the nail, there was blood all over the place.
"I didn't want to come out of the game, but I didn't want to hurt anyone ... I wasn't about to keep pitching not knowing where the ball was going."
Also 9.24 ANAHEIM, Calif. — This wasn't what Mariners starter Jeff Weaver had hoped to be feeling one year after being part of several on-field celebrations.
Weaver was a mainstay in a St. Louis Cardinals rotation that captured a division title, two playoff series and a World Series championship last year. He'd been in the middle of on-field exuberance after each of those, winning the clinching game against the Detroit Tigers.
One year later, he sat in a silent visitors' clubhouse. The smell of champagne from the nearby Los Angeles Angels clubhouse slowly began drifting over as Weaver's teammates packed for a long flight home.
"It's definitely disappointing," he said. "That's why I made a decision to come here. I thought it was a team that was ready to turn the corner. It just seems like a lot of stuff that was going bad caught up."
Weaver's slow start and sputtering finish was one reason the Mariners dropped out of contention. He has just seven wins and there's an outside chance he's pitched his final game for Seattle after tearing a nail in the fourth inning.
Seattle trailed 3-0 at the time after a pair of second-inning home runs yielded by Weaver — the eighth time he has allowed two or more in a game this season. He was trying to throw a cut-fastball in the fourth when he felt the nail rip along its side.
Weaver tried to continue pitching but hit three batters in his final three innings as he struggled to find control.

Jeff Weaver is unemployed, three weeks before the start of the season. The former Dodgers and Angels pitcher won the game that clinched the 2006 World Series championship for the St. Louis Cardinals, but he is 15-27 with a 5.96 earned-run average the last two seasons.
The Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals have expressed interest, said his younger brother, Angels pitcher Jered Weaver. Jeff's recent numbers might not sparkle, but he averages 190 innings [that's 190 HEALTHY innings -- ed.] a season with a career ERA of 4.72, in many years enough for a job offer if not a lucrative contract.
Jeff is 31 and is not retiring, Jered said.
"He wants to get four or five more years in," Jered said. "He's working out and trying to wait it out, just trying to get ready."
― Andy K, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 17:05 (sixteen years ago) link
What the hell does that "ed." note mean? Would there be some sort of Shakespearean GOTCHA moment to be had if the editor hadn't mentioned that? Would readers infer through editorial silence that Weaver instead actually averaged 190 broke-dick, pot-fueled, taco-laden Gloomy Gus innings?

How bad would it be for the Brewers to just bring Jeff Weaver up right now? His 2007 6.20 ERA/career 4.72 ERA, looks pretty good after the Suppan/Turnbow fire + gasoline combo.
NASHVILLE - Weaver was told he was being called up to plug Milwaukee's ailing bullpen in a 2 a.m. phone call, and flew all morning to reach Wrigley Field 2 1/2 hours before game time. "I had no clue," said Weaver, a a 31-year-old former starter for the Tigers, Yankees, Dodgers, Angels, Cardinals, and Mariners. "I was eating tacos at my favorite taqueria in Music Row, getting ready to honky tonk with my friend Mindy (McCready) -- she's been a little down lately -- when they told me I was getting moved. I assumed Scott (Boras) was flipping me to another Triple-A team again," he said. "They said, 'No, the big leagues.' Oh, OK."
Weaver held the Cubs to a mere 3 runs over 4 innings, giving up only 4 walks and 1 home run, and successfully getting some consecutive batters out. "Thank god," Brewers manager Ned Yost commented.

In nine starts for Nashville, Weaver was 2-4 with a 6.22 earned run average. The right-hander had a clause in his contract that allowed him to elect for free agency if he was not in the major leagues by June 15.
Weaver, who has played parts of 11 major league seasons for six different teams, has a career ERA of 4.72 with a 93-114 record.

The club has also agreed to terms with left-hander Shawn Estes and right-handers Ronald Belisario, Charlie Haeger, and Tanyon Sturtze on minor league deals with invitations to big league camp. General Manager Ned Colletti made the announcement. Weaver is a veteran of nine Major League seasons, including two with the Dodgers from 2004-05. Weaver, whom the Dodgers acquired from the Yankees in the Kevin Brown deal, went 27-24 with a 4.11 ERA in 68 starts while in a Dodger uniform. He is 93-114 with a 4.72 ERA in 284 games (267 starts) overall with Detroit (1999-2002), New York Yankees (2002-03), Los Angeles Dodgers (2004-05), Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (2006), St. Louis (2006), and Seattle (2007). The Fullerton native has appeared in four postseasons, including one World Series in 2006 with St. Louis. He went 1-1 with a 2.77 ERA (4 ER/13.0 IP) in two Fall Classic starts, and was the winning pitcher in the Cardinals’ Game 5 clincher over Detroit at Busch Stadium. In nine postseason appearances (six starts) overall, he is 3-4 with a 4.03 ERA (17 ER/38.0 IP).
Weaver was a first-round pick of Detroit in the 1998 draft, going 14th overall. His brother Jered pitches for the Angels.

PHOENIX - Jeff Weaver was flipping through channels when he came upon the MLB Network replaying Game 5 of the 2006 World Series.
Until then, Weaver hadn't seen a tape of himself tossing eight innings for the win that night to clinch the championship for the St. Louis Cardinals.
"Instant chills," Weaver said.
For better or for worse, emotions always have played a big role in Weaver's career, which has been defined by playoff success and failure.
Now 32, Weaver is merely a spring training non-roster invitee in his second go-round with the Dodgers, trying to make it back to the majors after spending all of last season in the minors.
And after a chance meeting with General Manager Ned Colletti at a Manhattan Beach restaurant, Weaver got a minor league contract and yet another chance.
"I let him know that I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get back to the big leagues in whatever role I can help them compete and win, hopefully continue what they did last year," Weaver said.
To do so, the right-hander will have to impress Manager Joe Torre, whom he still refers to as "Mr. Torre" from their Yankees days together.
In his book "The Yankee Years," Torre is quoted as telling New York general manager Brian Cashman that "You've got to get rid of this guy because emotionally he can't handle it, trying to come back from that."
That refers to Weaver giving up the game-winning home run to Florida's Alex Gonzalez in Game 4 of the 2003 World Series.
Torre said he had no problem with Weaver personally, but the Yankees traded Weaver to the Dodgers along with Yhency Brazoban for Kevin Brown, and Weaver won 27 games over the next two seasons.
"I'm hoping to get him back to where he was," pitching coach Rick Honeycutt said. "I know what he had in the past. He's a great competitor."
After winning a World Series with the Cardinals, Weaver admits to slacking.
"I didn't handle it properly, as far as you go late into October and usually you're home resting by that time," Weaver said. "I really think it was my fault not getting back into the workout routine. I was tired. I was beat.
"I felt like I could just go into spring, get my work in, and everything would be fine and dandy. Obviously, it backfired."
Weaver went 7-13 with Seattle and then pitched in the minors for Milwaukee and Cleveland, swallowing his pride to work as a reliever in the Indians organization.
Weaver wants to pitch another three to five years, and said he pitches with a lower arm angle now while getting his sinker back in form.
"Just to see that, my confidence is high," he said.

He's pitching in a minor-league game today so they can stretch him out to three innings in anticipation of using him as a long man out of the bullpen or possibly giving him a spot start now and then. But he clearly has this team made as a reliever, even though no one has come out and actually said it yet.``He has been pretty consistent for me, without telling you he is on the club,'' Joe Torre said this morning. ``I think doing what we're doing today (is telling). Normally, you want to see somebody pitch against big-league clubs, but this is more of a physical thing. I would like to see him stretch it out.''

IT BEGINS
Dodgers purchased the contract of RHP Jeff Weaver from Triple-A Albuquerque.
The Dodgers have looked at Weaver strictly as a reliever since signing him, and he'll be used in the middle innings now. He had a 3.55 ERA in 12 2/3 innings down in Triple-A.

I was at the game tonight and Taco Time looked pretty good! Based on MacDonald's poor start tonight, I wouldn't be surprised if they take MacDonald out and give Weaver a shot in the rotation.
His at-bat was shockingly exciting. He hit a towering fly to the warning track.

It was like old times for Weaver, who won 27 games for the Dodgers from 2004-05.
"I finally had a pass list again," said Weaver, the Southern California native who spent all last year and the beginning of this year in the Minor Leagues. "I had a handful of people show up and share it with me. My parents, a couple buddies, my wife and Gary Wright. You know who he is?"
Wright sang the 1976 hit "Dream Weaver," not only on the platinum album but at Weaver's wedding.
"We met when I was pitching in Detroit, we kept in touch and he sang at my wedding," Weaver said. "He came to show support."

Jeff Weaver is not only back in the Dodgers’ spring training camp, there is an excellent chance he will be back with the team when it returns to Los Angeles.Professionally, it’s been a tumultuous past few years for Weaver. If not for his entire nine-year career. But now he sits at his locker at Camelback Ranch as a non-roster invitee, without guarantee of a major league job, and seemingly at peace.Weaver said he is done with the Triple-A uniform, which is the only one he wore in 2008. At age 33, and as of Wednesday a new father, he appears ready to seize his current opportunity or live with the results if he does not."That’s why I came back," Weaver said. "It was more of a situation where I really don’t want to do the Triple-A thing again. I’ll be content with whatever happens with me now."He came to the Dodgers' spring training camp last year too, but when camp broke was headed to Triple-A Albuquerque. Called up on April 30, he stuck for the rest of the season. He proved a valuable swing man for the Dodgers, finishing the season 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA in 28 games. In seven starts, he went 2-1 with a 3.13 ERA.It’s his proven ability to both relieve and start that makes him a strong candidate to again make the Dodgers this season. Even though they were unwilling to sign him except as a non-roster invitee.Weaver said he did have opportunities to sign a major league contract, but the Manhattan Beach resident and Northridge native wanted to remain in Los Angeles."There was a couple, but not a situation I wanted to encounter," he said. "Especially with the baby coming. I’m just really comfortable with the chance to be at home in a stable situation."

This is an elaborate joke, right? Jered Weaver on...stretching.
"It doesn't feel like your body's supposed to do that, but it needs to," Weaver said. "I just hated the feeling of it. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me. But, if you're gonna commit yourself to staying in this game, if your passion and love is still in it, you're gonna do what it takes to get through that. I'm well aware of what I need to do. I'm going to stay on top of it as much as possible."Weaver, 33, spoke Sunday at Tempe Diablo Stadium, where the Angels are continuing spring-training exercises. He has thrown two bullpen sessions here and earned positive reviews from the team.He worked hard at stretching this off-season, he said, and began throwing one month earlier than usual to see if the stretching was working. It was. Weaver said his stretching and massage work was primarily "old school," with "a lot of knees and elbows."

After spring debut, Angels' Jered Weaver passes torch to Garrett Richards

Hopefully he won't have to reach so far that he becomes limber enough to crank it up to 84.

Jered Weaver’s Fastball: Sorry … this is taking a little longer than I thought … almost there
Klaw: Take your time. We’ve got another half hour at least.
Michael: Guys like Weaver and Sabathia presumably wouldn’t make their teams if they were 24 and making $500k. Is it fair to ask then, why don’t those teams just realize the sunk cost and release them?
Klaw: In Weaver’s case they might have to do that – how can you let him start if Carlos Perez could just catch Weaver’s fastball with his teeth?
