Who cares if the playoffs are still going on? Everyone knows the Yankees are going to win. Again.

Any Cubs / Yanks A-Rod swap better involve trading the "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" sing-along for Kate Fucking Smith.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently the Padres are interested in Adrian Beltre, which I just don't understand.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

I don't understand anyone being interested in Adrian Beltre.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

For what its worth, Beltre kicked the shit out of the Dodgers at home when the Mariners rolled through here, so he'd allegedly be good in all those NL West contests at the Ravine.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

if the yanks trade a-rod, they're more fucked than i thought.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

If the Yanks trade A-Rod for Aramis Ramirez and a good pitching prospect (Rich Hill?), I don't think they're fucked at all.

The Yankees need multiple starting pitchers (i.e. Daisuke Matsuzaka + who else?)

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

Ken Macha complaining that Beane told him to play Bobby Kielty over Mark Kotsay vs. lefties, Macha refused.

Kielty v. Lefties: .325/.358/.607
Kotsay: .265/.293/.410

milo z (mlp), Sunday, 22 October 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah that complaint doesn't make Macha look real bright.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 22 October 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

I feel bad for Macha cuz he got really eviscerated in the press and by his own players, but he's never exactly distinguished himself so he doesn't have much to argue for his great managerial skills.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 22 October 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

And apparently Kotsay owed it to Macha to keep his mouth shut because he remained in the lineup.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

How difficult is it to go after a guy like Mark DeRosa?

Well, you would have to have a tradeable commodity. Who are the Yankees going to trade to get DeRosa? The Rangers need pitching, and unless the Rangers are giving up Hughes, Wang or Proctor they don't really have anyone I'd take were I the Rangers' GM.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

Or you could just sign another free agent. Aging multi-position players with a .730 lifetime OPS are not exactly the Golden Eggs of baseball.

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 23:44 (nineteen years ago)

DeRosa was 58th in the AL in hitter VORP last year, but you'd think the Yankees would know he's not gonna do that ag ... oops. Tony Womack.

Rob Neyer: (1:03 PM ET ) Well, you have to understand, that Gary Sheffield never has attained the maturity of, say, your typical college freshman. So this seems about par for the course.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 26 October 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

Keith Law: (12:05 PM ET ) I think the Padres' front office, or at least some of its members, realized that there's no way Bochy could produce enough value to earn the $2 million or so he was going to want after all this courtship by other clubs. He's a terrible in-game, tactical manager, and while he gets high marks for player management and media relations, he can't possibly be good enough in those areas to overcome the fact that he can't manage his roster.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 27 October 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

I basically agree with that except for the fact that the Padres routinely have bad players on the field, and he has consistency overachieved with those bad players, and subsequently earned a lot of revenue for his owners. If the Padres are going to try to become a perennial competitive team, fine. If they're continue to play with a 60mil payroll, uh, hey guys, the manager isn't the problem.

Matt (St. Louis): With the Cardinals having over $30 million to spend this offseason who will they look at signing? The rumors out of St. Louis is we are looking at Schmidt?

Rob Neyer: (12:10 PM ET ) Seems like a great fit, considering TLR's history of success with veteran pitchers. But as I wrote in my column, THE biggest story of this off-season is going to be the huge contracts the free-agent pitchers get. And there are more teams with money than free-agent pitchers.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

The Red Sox are starting to look smart for not signing Pedro to a four year deal. It didn't take a crystal ball to foresee that he'd have some serious injury issues during the length of that contract. They'd look even smarter if Clement had turned out to be a decent pitcher.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 6 November 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder J.D. Drew opted out of the final three years of his contract Thursday, making him eligible to become a free agent.

"He led the club in RBIs. You just don't snap your fingers and find another player like that," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said on a conference call. "He wants out, he can have out. He's moving on, we're moving on. We'll find players who like playing here. If he doesn't want to be here, he has the right to leave, and he's exercising that right."

Colletti said he was told Monday by Scott Boras, Drew's agent, that this move was a possibility. Then, Colletti said, he awoke Thursday to find a message on his cell phone from Boras giving him the news, which he received officially by fax in the afternoon.

"You learn in this business never to be surprised," Colletti said. "I'm surprised how it came down. Everything we had heard, everything that had been written led us to believe the player loved being here."

Drew, who turns 31 this month, hit .283 with 20 homers and 100 RBIs last season -- his second with the Dodgers. He signed a five-year, $55 million contract on Dec. 23, 2004, and had been guaranteed $33 million over the next three years with Los Angeles.

lol i hope his best offer is 3 years/18 million

I also think Scott Boras made enemies with Ned Colletti today. If we offer arbitration to his clients who Im sure wont accept it (Drew, Maddux, Gagne), we stand to pick up some serious draft picks.

Plaschke did blame Depo, but also thanked him for ushering the pasionless Drew out of LA.

Colletti is being a poopy pants about it tho. And I think Im wrong about getting draft picks for Drew.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

Drew must really hate playing in LA, because I'm not sure he gets three years and $33million at 31.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 10 November 2006 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe he was tired of being described as a hiring mistake by the Plaschkes of the world when he leads the team in RBI and is arguably the best offensive player on the team.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 10 November 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

I want to know the real story here! Boras isn't stupid, he has to be talking to another team (Mets? Boston?) that's going to guarantee his client more that 3yr/$33M.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 10 November 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

...Detroit?

Plaxico Polanco (Andy_K), Friday, 10 November 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, Drew and Maggs are similar offensively, and in age and injury history. Maggs is at $15M/yr. (through 09/10) which is probably what Drew will be making.

Is it a significant upgrade in defense?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 10 November 2006 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

One thing I know is that JD Drew will not be filling the vacancy for a left fielder in San Diego, as Kevin Towers has quietly removed all Scott Boras players from his team now that Barfield is gone.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

Yes. Drew's solid enough to slide Maggs to DH for many games. He also gets on base and has more plate discipline than most of the current lineup. Left-handed, too. As long as either Monroe or Thames is still around, there wouldn't be too much risk.

The absolute most perfect fit for the lineup is Teixeira. Don't know if the Tigers could swing it. Nate Robertson plus Fernando Rodey plus a couple decent prospects? (I don't think I'd consider a trade with Bonderman.) Rangers probably wouldn't take it, and I don't really know what they need to begin with.

Plaxico Polanco (Andy_K), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

and I don't really know what they need to begin with.

Pitching!!! (same as it ever was)

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

Rangers need pitching. They always need pitching.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

So I was sort of correct on the possible needs! And who doesn't need a durable left-handed power pitcher?

The Tigers need an actual play-every-day, get-on-base, good-hitting first baseman.

Plaxico Polanco (Andy_K), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

They still might have that in Shelton!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

Sheffield to the Tigers?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

Depending on who they have to give up that's a good fit for the Tigers.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

Sheff would be reuniting with Leyland.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah the only problem is that he's 642 years old or whatever. I hope they aren't giving up one of their starters, unless it is Rogers haha.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

They still might have that in Shelton!

I think playing him months through that extreme slump, only to eject him to AAA and leave him off the post-season roster, screwed him up beyond repair.

Dombrowski would be bonkers to give up a starter in a deal with Sheffield. Another good fit offensively, but I'd almost rather see them go for Carlos Lee or Soriano.

A one-year Bonds deal could be great (and hilarious). It would be timed perfectly for Magglio to slide over to full-time DH and open up a spot in the OF for Cameron Maybin in '08. However: "Barry Bonds with the exception of his knees and other joints would like to play again for Jim Leyland, however Barry Bonds' knees will not play in Detroit during the months of April, June, May, and maybe parts of July and September unless the Detroit Tigers were to add a retractable roof to Comerica Park."

Plaxico Polanco (Andy_K), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

Dude:

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

That's why he'd be DH'ing.

Plaxico Polanco (Andy_K), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

1) Those were SF, not Detroit. I think his point about Detroit's weather being hard on Bonds is fair.
2) Everything BP has shows Monroe as being a mediocre fielder, but still better than Bonds.
3) Range Factor is mostly useless.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

(Oh, wait -- DayQuil's messing with my thought process. I'm used to people saying how brutal Bonds is defensively.)

"Plaxico Polanco is a jack ass. I bust him up."

Plaxico Polanco (Andy_K), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

Supposedly, Boston's mucking around w/ Drew, Matsukaza, and Clemens. I'm all for bringing in the 1st (for a reasonable price) (tho he won't be able to DH much to rest those balky joints, what with Papi AND Manny) (DON'T TRADE MANNY K THX), but not so sure on the other 2.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

Of course, I just remembered Wily Mo Coyote. I'm guessing, if Drew gets signed, Manny goes somewhere else, Wily gets his chance to butcher balls in LF, and Red Sox Nation gets stupid.

Plaxico Polanco (Andy_K), Friday, 10 November 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 November 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Friday, 10 November 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

Good point Barry.

How about Ledezma, Infante... and a Neifi wrapped within a 400' spool of orange plastic fencing?

Plaxico Polanco (Andy_K), Friday, 10 November 2006 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

Besides, it does sound like the Tigers will need to roll out the red carpet for Maybin in '08 or so.

Sanchez is a pretty strong prospect:

"We have been able to add one of the biggest bats in baseball," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland, who managed Sheffield in Florida. "I have a great relationship with Gary Sheffield and I have the utmost respect for him. I'm happy to add a bat of this magnitude and that he'll be a Tiger."

JD Drew has a knack for getting hurt and has missed far too many games for that kind of cash. Does Boston even really need to be thinking about a hitter like Drew? They should score plenty of runs, they need pitching of all types.

so, o's trade a young mid-reliever to the yanks for jaret wright and 4 million cash. if the progress of the bedard and cabrera continues, wright is quite an upgrade on the backend of the rotation. his era from last season would have been second best amongst o's starters.

Thanks.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 13 November 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

I was wondering about this too. Didn't it all start with the waivers/rumored A-Rod deal? And then Manny just decided to fuck with them every season since?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 13 November 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

That's the gist of it. Post A-Rod trade malaise, coupled w/ questions from the press re: Manny's commitment to winning, and Manny either not knowing when to keep mum or playing the press like a ukulele.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 13 November 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

'"knack of getting hurt" the past 3 years = GETTING HIT ON TEH DAMN WRIST'

The dude was the walking wounded with the Cards. Drew has been a full time starter for seven years and had only two seasons where he barely got to 145 games. I don't know if it is dumb luck or hypochondria, but the guy does miss games and if I have options, I'd consider someone else.

Drew was hyped as being the next big thing for a few years in St. Louis. The Cards were ready to cut bait on him when he went to Atlanta. He had a good year in Atlanta and it made him a bunch of money.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 04:48 (nineteen years ago)

Mets re-sign Valentin for a year, don't rule out pursuing Lugo or Loretta.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

"Drew was hyped as being the next big thing for a few years in St. Louis. The Cards were ready to cut bait on him when he went to Atlanta. He had a good year in Atlanta and it made him a bunch of money."

Drew is (when he is healthy--and apart from one freak injury two years ago he has been for the last three years) consistently one of the ten or fifteen so best outfielders in the game. Considering that the Dodgers'll have to pay a lot more than $11m to replace that production via free agency and finding someone in their farm system who can replace Drew's production for the next three year isn't going to be easy, I'd say any Dodger fan who is cheering his departure is a nutjob.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

What Alex said. From May 2006:

Andrew Kamenetzky: Given some of the issues that you've had with injuries in the past, is it a big load off your mind starting out this healthy and playing well?

J.D. Drew: Other than the 2 1/2 years I had with my knee injury in St. Louis, I've always started out healthy. The thing for me, and if you look back at the injury history, it's just freak incidents. Broken hand. Broken wrist last year. Those are things that you can't avoid. When I was in Atlanta, my knee was finally healed up and I played an entire season and was perfectly where I wanted to be. Hopefully that's where it will go this year.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

"Drew must really hate playing in LA, because I'm not sure he gets three years and $33million at 31."

By the way I was out of my mind when I said this and not thinking about how insanely overpriced this free agent market will be.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

It only makes any sense at all if Towers thinks he's close to signing Zito, in my opinion. I love Peavy but Zito isn't all that much of a downgrade, and Satalamacchia is arguably the best catcher prospect in baseball, and the best prospect the Braves have. Plus a decent starting 2b and an end of the rotation guy?

Sweet Lou 2010 = Dusty 2006, when they'll be dishing out about $55M combined to three underperforming players (Lee, Ramirez, Soriano) on a 90-loss team.

i'm glad the cubs are making some waves, even if they overpaid to say the least. i was more worried about the pitching than offense heading into '07, though. if the pitchers are walking people left and right and giving up 6 runs per game, there's nothing that'll get them above .500.

but if the pitchers are okay, this could be enough in the central.

The descriptions on this thread of Manny's problems with Boston are not accurate. As far as I know, his wife has never liked living in Boston - for reasons that remain somewhat hazy. It is personal stuff, nothing to do with Manny's "commitment" to "the team"/"winning" or perceived slights.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Monday, 20 November 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

And Alou for a year with the Mets doesn't make sense for the money, does it? He would be perfect if they played him the way the Yankees played Tim Raines in 1998, a dependable bench threat who could teach the guys a trick or two, but I doubt the Yanks were paying Rock $8-9M that year, and they were also giving young guys a chance in the outfield (who, even if they never worked out in the end, could obv become bargaining chips)

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Monday, 20 November 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, they signed Piniella for 4 years? that is nuts.

Soriano's numbers will be at their gaudiest in Wrigley -- for a couple years. But if he hits 65-70 the first 2 seasons that's still bad at the back end.

Omar is drunk with successful '06 oldies, like Valentin and Duque (until Oct). If you wanna see young Zito a Met, getting dissed by old Glav may guarantee it, sez Ben Shpigel in Times:

Whether Glavine stays will have little effect on the Mets’ interest in the free-agent pitcher Barry Zito. Now that the Red Sox have won the right to negotiate with the star Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, the Mets view Zito as the top pitcher available and are interested in signing him no matter what. But if Glavine elects to sign with the Braves, the Mets are likely to go full-throttle after Zito and at least one other pitcher. The negotiations for Zito figure to last well into December.

Now that the Mets are on the verge of signing the free-agent outfielder Moises Alou to a one-year contract, they may intensify their efforts to package outfielder Lastings Milledge in a deal for a front-line starter. The Mets are enthralled with their young outfield prospects Carlos Gomez and Fernando Martínez, who they believe have more potential than Milledge, and could trade him for a pitcher, perhaps Dontrelle Willis of Florida, Jake Peavy of San Diego or Jason Jennings of Colorado. The Mets are still interested in White Sox pitchers Javier Vázquez and Freddy García, but Chicago would like one of the Mets’ top young pitchers — Mike Pelfrey or Philip Humber — in return.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 20 November 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, I don't know the length of Piniella's contract, I was just making BOLD CLAMS for the future of the Cubs. Sorry for the confusion.

My only point was that Piniella will be stuck with an overpaid + underperforming roster sooner rather than later. As it was with Dusty, the post-honeymoon period will probably get ugly.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 20 November 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

Trammell will succeed Piniella.

(It's the Cubs.)

Just a hunch.

At any rate, I'll probably watch WGN more in '07 than the previous few years combined.

I'm sure I'm late to the party but Lastings Milledge has an amazing name.

So i'm guessing Alfonso will be patrolling the ivy walls of wrigley since they already signed their star 2nd baseman Mark DeRosa...?

bnw (bnw), Monday, 20 November 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

Rumour is that Soriano will play center which is just about the only way the beginning of the deal makes even a marginal amount of sense (plus it means bye bye Juan Pierre.) But the last four years of this are just dead salary weight plus.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 20 November 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

I don't buy the Wrigley bump for Soriano. He spent two years in AL Coors without going for 65-70, there's no reason to believe he will in Wrigley.

milo z (mlp), Monday, 20 November 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

But:

a) he spent 2 years in AL Coors w/out facing AL Coors pitchers (which I imagine was part of the reason for the ArlPark's success in tatering)
b) the NL pitchers suck, because the NL sucks, because etc etc SALLY

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 20 November 2006 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

"why wd anyone think Sori won't stink in center?"

I got the impression that he was inexperienced but not too bad in LF actually (his major problem being poor paths to the ball, not arm or speed.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 20 November 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

Soriano does not fix the gaping holes in the Cubs pitching. At this point the Cubs have one great starter, maybe one decent starter and a couple of OK setup guys with the rest of the staff being bottom feeders.

Why are the Mets down on Milledge and dead set on getting rid of him? Considering the age of Floyd and Green, I would think they would want to keep him around.

Moises Alou might not be a bad one year player for the right club that needs an extra bat, preferably in the AL where they could put him in as a DH. I think he would be a better fit for the Angels or maybe the Yankees than the Mets.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 20 November 2006 23:37 (nineteen years ago)

Soriano led the majors in Outfield Assists, absolutely blowing away the competition with 22 of them.

22 outs = 7 1/3 innings of outs, just with his arm.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 02:42 (nineteen years ago)

soriano's been pretty consistent over the past four seasons.
?!?!?!

This is the first time he's had an OBP over .350 and a fairly flukey slugging year, while entering the end of his 'prime.' Assuming he can even continue performing at last year's level (and isn't a disaster in center) - how long can that hold up?

He's probably a good player to have, but he's not the sixth most valuable player in major-league history.

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

he's not the sixth most valuable player in major-league history.

Right, but his contract has nothing to do with his value in major league history. Is he worth $17 mil per year in this market? Arguably. Maybe a little overpaid. Will he continue to perform? Not to the same level, but he probably will be worth, say, $13mil per year. Does the market figure to stay somewhat the same for a while? Yeah, I would say so. Revenue is up across the board in every respect.

He's especially valuable if the Cubs have the balls to play him at 2b, but instead they will throw money at Mark Derosa for no particular reason. Let Felix Pie have a run at CF and play Derosa as a superutility guy. Murton and Jones are solid (if unspectacular) at the corners.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 04:47 (nineteen years ago)

Two words, brother:
Adrian. Beltre.

Beltre was actually not that bad last year. He wasn't worth his contract, but he had a good season. Arguably a better season than Eric Chavez, who has a similar contract but little criticism to go with it.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 04:56 (nineteen years ago)

Not to the same level, but he probably will be worth, say, $13mil per year.
On what do you base this? Where are you getting any of your numbers? An older, lesser player than Carlos Beltran with one season where he might arguable have been worth something in the teens.

It's an absurd contract. The Cubs are tilting after a bad season and overpaid for a guy who will never perform as well as he did last year, and will probably never even approach it for half of his contract.

Carlos Lee - league-average corner outfielder, hit almost as well last season (.300 EQA vs. .304), with a much better track record (hitting and fielding), and he's the same age as Soriano. You think he's a $140mn player?

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 05:42 (nineteen years ago)

i think the consensus seems to be that carlos lee is gonna break down a lot sooner than soriano, he's got serious "old player skills", walks only slightly more than soriano, is the same age, and is likely gonna be forced into a DH role before long. and when i said soriano was 'consistent', look at what he's done. his slugging year wasn't "flukey", considering he's hit 39, 38, 28, and 36 HR in the previous four seasons (plus a boatload of doubles). I'd rather have soriano than carlos lee, most definitely. especially since soriano can play a middle infield position if needed, as was mentioned above. overpaid? yeah of course, but who isn't? but i'm not an accountant so i'm not gonna worry that much about the salary.

of course, he's not the best player the cubs could have landed, they would have been better served grabbing beltran a couple years back. but like i said, i'd sooner have the overspending hendry now than the "let's cut loose maddux for jose guzman" larry himes of yesteryear.

gear (gear), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 06:49 (nineteen years ago)

the cubs are always going to overpay. that's why they're the cubs.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 07:54 (nineteen years ago)

wtf mets decline glavine's option. they are losing me as a fan with the off-season moves, so far.

I'm pretty sure this was always part of the plan (i.e., Glavine knew they wouldn't pick it up), and that they negotiate from here.

Pierre to Dodgers, 5yrs/$45mil: "He's another guy with great qualities as a human being, like Nomar [Garciaparra]," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti told the Associated Press.

g00blar (gooblar), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 08:06 (nineteen years ago)

On what do you base this?

If ancient Frank Thomas is worth $10mil per on this market, Soriano is definitely worth at least $13mil.

You think he's a $140mn player?

If he somewhat adequately could be trusted to play CF or 2B, absolutely. Solely as a corner outfielder, probably not.

An older, lesser player than Carlos Beltran

Beltran would almost definitely make 20mil per in this market.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 08:13 (nineteen years ago)

Morb OTM. If you're going to pay $14M for a pitcher, it might behoove you to snag one that's on the right side of 40 (or maybe even 30).

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

If ancient Frank Thomas is worth $10mil per on this market, Soriano is definitely worth at least $13mil.
Uh, you understand Frank didn't sign for eight years and Soriano didn't sign for $13, right?

If he somewhat adequately could be trusted to play CF or 2B, absolutely. Solely as a corner outfielder, probably not.
Key issue: Soriano has never played CF and can't be trusted to play 2B.

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, you understand Frank didn't sign for eight years and Soriano didn't sign for $13, right?

Yeah, but that was the number you took issue with. If 13/14 is a reasonable figure (in my opinion, it is), then 17 means he's overpaid by a few mil per. The Cubs can afford it. 8 years is the bigger issue, I agree with you on that point. But at some point you just trade the guy to the Yankees and the problem is solved!

Key issue: Soriano has never played CF and can't be trusted to play 2B.

I agree with you on CF but Hendry doesn't. I think he's a perfectly adequate below-average 2B guy, along the lines of a Jeff Kent. You'd prefer to have someone better there, but if you have to choose between Soriano in CF and Soriano in 2B, you have to want him to play 2B, right?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

The Cubs' NUMBER ONE priority this winter should have been improving the team OBP . . . and Hendry spends the money on a guy with a .325 career mark that's nine points *lower* than the league average?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but that was the number you took issue with.
I took issue with the contract, the number and the years. At some point those long-term, backloaded contracts come back to haunt a franchise, where they can't compete in four years because their payroll is tied up in a schmuck. (I know, I live 2 miles from one of these.)

think he's a perfectly adequate below-average 2B guy, along the lines of a Jeff Kent.
But, uh, Kent has consistently been an above-average (bordering on very good) second basemen - Soriano was a statue his last two years in the infield.
