i think this could work! youk should go to lf, yes.
There are very few DHs in baseball the AL that I admire, but as a concept, it's hurt the game. The DH has afforded AL pitchers a false thug-bravado and security that you couldn't get away with in the NL.

― Dr Morbius, Monday, 22 October 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)
Youk played 18 games in LF in 2006 and wasn't measurably worse at it than Manny. I wouldn't be surprised if they did this and/or sat Ortiz if the Rockies start Morales in Denver.
― govern yourself accordingly, Monday, 22 October 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)
I'd give Ortiz a rest for a game or two and keep Youk in at first base. Papi's knee could use a break; Youk is locked in. You could also alternate, starting Youk against lefties and Ortiz against righties.
I wouldn't mess around with the outfield much. I don't think Youk has the speed to cover CF, and Manny needs to stay at left -- at least at Fenway, where he's made himself at home (in more ways than one) and where his lack of speed is less of a liability than it is in the vast right field.

― jergïns, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)
In Japan, the Pacific League adopted the DH in 1975. In 1988, the minor league Eastern League and Western League used it, but Central League farm clubs are allowed to opt out. The Central League never used the DH until interleague play began in 2005, when they used a DH on the road against Pacific League teams.

Todd( Coralville, IA): I think the Sox need to seriously consider playing Youk at SS in the games at Colorado.
Rob Neyer: No. There's a rule -- unwritten, yes, but still a rule -- that says you can't play shortstop with a porcupine on your face.
― Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)
Vincent (Chicago): Is it too much of a risk to start Wake in game 2 and then game 6? His knuckler is likely to get crushed in Colorado so better to keep him in Fenway. Plus that would set up Schilling (or Beckett on 3 days) for game 7.
SportsNation Rob Neyer: I haven't been paying attention (yet) to the announced plans . . . I'll be surprised if Wakefield starts a game in Denver, due to the altitude (secondary consideration: the cold). Seems to me that Wakefield simply won't start at all.

Wake is off the WS roster, due to injury apparently. He says Tito wanted him to start games 2 and 6 originally.... but this would have been potentially a career-ending injury if he pitched in WS.
So it's Beckett, Schilling and Dice-K for 1,2,3. Lester is "stretching".

Nate Silver: "the Red Sox are perhaps the strongest Secret Sauce team since divisional play began, excelling in each of that metric’s three categories: defense (FRAA), closer effectiveness (WXRL), and power pitching (EqK9). Using our nifty new Secret Sauce reports, I recreated my study from Baseball Between the Numbers and ranked the 208 playoff teams since 1969 in each of the Secret Sauce’s three departments. The Red Sox sit right atop the list, and each of the four teams immediately below (1990 Reds, 2001 D'backs, 1998 Yankees, 1984 Tigers) won the World Series."

Jerod (Gresham, OR): What do you think of the decision to give Aaron Cook a Series start after not throwing a single live pitch in the past two months?
Nate Silver: As I said in the playoff prospectus piece, I think it's a pretty terrible decision, maybe even a series-altering decision. Even if we were 100% sure that Aaron Cook was 100% healthy, he's still Aaron Cook, and I don't like how he matches up with the Red Sox lineup. The cutesy stuff isn't going to work against this bunch of hitters.

― Steve Shasta, Friday, 26 October 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)
Wasn't 2005 the year of:
1) Pierzynski reaching base on a not-dropped third strike? 2) Atlanta and Houston playing 18 innings in the LDS? 3) The longest WS game ever? 4) Yanks and Angels playing a pretty good 5-game LDS, thereby kicking the "ARod is a choker" stuff into full gear?
That was a lot more interesting than anything that's happening this year.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 26 October 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)
oh, I remember some of that once prompted! The 18-inning game especially.

cdebrunn (harrisburg pa): Beckett has been mentioned by some as being in the same class as Koufax or Gibson. Considering they both pitched in the high mound era could Beckett actually be better?
Kevin Goldstein: This is the kind of thing that gets me way in trouble sometimes, but here goes. Josh Beckett is better than Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson -- no question in my mind at all. That's just how athletics work. Go look at the progress of very scientific standard, like track and field or something. High schoolers run times now that would have one gold medals in the 1930. I know this might sound insane, but I absolutely believe that a guy like, say, Prince Fielder is a better baseball player than Babe Ruth was, and Scott Kazmir is a better pitcher than Lefty Grove. Compared to era, no way. But real life skill -- absolutely.

Alexandrasdad (Gtafton): Do people find the Sox moneyball approach frustrating. All these walks and balls make for winning baseball, but lordy, it's like watching paint dry.
Rob Neyer: You know what? I agree 100 percent. Believe it or not, I wrote the same thing about the A's in a book, six years ago (no, I didn't write Moneyball; *another* book). I think this sort of baseball is terribly boring, relative to, say, the baseball of the 1980s. I'm sorry to complain. I love the game, in whatever manifestation. But watching guys run up pitch counts just ain't entertainment unless they're your guys.
Derek (VT): Anybody else thinks Papelbon looks like the villian from The Incredibles?

i think the ownership group tried to cash in on the long standing (and formerly long suffering) group of supporters by either somehow copyrighting the term or something. i know they printed up "official membership" cards to red sox nation 3 years ago and they were roundly rejected by anyone who knew why mike torrez was a bastard. but there are so many bandwagon jumpers i guess the ownership group sees a way to bleed a couple more bucks out of the idiots who can afford tickets these days.
