I do think my niceness plays a part in my occasionally finishing last (or at least nowhere near the front of the pack) inasmuch as I'm aware of the ways that I could get ahead if I were willing to be more of a general dickbag. I don't blame other people for finishing last when it happens, though, because it's a cross I'm willing to bear in the pursuit of being a decent person.

There was some kind of Steampunk party in Atlanta a few weeks ago (sadly i didn't get to go). I don't know how it turned out but some hip local bands played and it sounded like some kind of cool thing. It seems to sort of fit into Etsy DIY culture and "The Dream of the 1890s" etc. Next time i hear about a Steampunk party i really need to make a point to check it out.

I do wish there were Cyberpunk-themed parties though. Maybe that's what raves are like (I've never been to one).

Gregory Bateson is always appropriate (sarahell), Thursday, 1 August 2013 01:19 (ten years ago) link

Think the point was that even in self-indictment you shouldn't deign to speak for everyone; perhaps your biggest crime (in my opinion) was to not elaborate on "I like to play out of tune and I am crazy" because I think that while *perhaps* a lot of this music does stem from a subconscious desire to push beyond, to transcend the meagre palette conventionally available, in manifesting experimentally this conceit, perhaps genuine and sincere expression is found. I suppose that would be your thesis, which would be very welcome on the altered scale thread. I'm also perturbed by "lesser geniuses" - subjectivity is permitted, of course, but it's a really loaded term regardless. Anyway, it's a fucken great thread and you've posted loads of awesome stuff there, which is the real reason you get a pass (from me at least)

imago, Thursday, 1 August 2013 01:25 (ten years ago) link

@ sarahell, a few posts later, I explained: Just to be clear, I am posting on this thread to be proven wrong. I love extended scales, my own new music uses 24-tone tunings, primarily for saturating the colours of essentially diatonic music. I've spent the last five years buying up as many records by famous scale-doctoring composers as I can find and what I've heard has been either

the racial dynamics of the performance were depressingly typical (i cosign everything in that article posted above), but other than that i think it was authentically weird. the teddy bears, the unflattering outfit... it seemed like a lynchian approximation of the lolita teenpop aesthetic sold so effectively by britney spears a decade ago. and i think this uncomfortable, dissonant quality was both intentional and, as adam said, related to drugs.

pop is a moving target. for a period that sound and aesthetic were coming from some pretty explicitly teenpop stuff after the backstreet/britney wave left the charts. then k-pop started to be where that aesthetic ended up -- and this isn't just like a 'vibe' thing, but you can trace the producers and their careers. now we're in a place where what radio disney plays also looks like 'pop' in general -- britney, katy perry, avril, maroon 5, taylor swift (i know this because i just checked their top playlist, which i haven't checked in _years_ [if ever], just for the sake of this discussion). so of course you're not going to have as much of pop fans looking to odder places when there's plenty of straightforward pop in the heart of the charts. (in fact, at the moment, what k-pop has going for it is more its roots in 90s R&B, and the american fanbase, as i understand it, skews v. nonwhite).

can't speak regarding the thread b/c i didn't really pay attention to it except occasionally to see what ppl were excited about. but its fun to get excited about things! so if ppl seemed enthusiastic about stuff that wasn't your speed, i mean, why is that offensive? are they failing your standards for their taste? ffs.

but yeah if telling people what real music is and isn't makes you feel like a serious person then be my guest

it's a symbolic gesture. the poli sci department will be in contact with the prison staff, and he'll be given access to study materials and tests, after which he earns 30 credits and no degree. the key point here is that norwegian prisons are only allowed to limit the right of free movement, and other than that life in the prison complexes has to be as similar to the outside world as possible.

i thought the bump was going to be the "breivik's party part of new government" story they've been trotting out recently in foreign papers, which is ridiculous.

for a while I was a really big nerd, I was in band, I read lots of books, I damaged my eyesight beyond repair and broke the home computer dozens of times playing around with the resources in the system folder etc. etc. homebody geek all that.

Then I grew to 6' and found out I could run faster than a lot of people and do lots of pushups and situps and have sex for very long periods of time. Now I just read comics and watch action films.

Once upon a time there were two brothers.
The older one was called prog. The younger was kraut.
Kraut took the disadvantages of prog and made them advanteges.
The older one was boring and repetetive. The young one was habdsome enthusiastic and unexpected.
The older one made lots of money. The younger was a starving artist.
Both of them will die but the younger one will die later happier and charmingly creative still.
The older one will die frustrated, never acceptibg his limitations, somewhat pathetic and a annoying.

Paolo Di Canio reminded me of the Gyp Rosetti character in the last season of Boardwalk Empire: atavistically violent, well-dressed, inscrutable, and, of course, irredeemably Italian in all manner and ethos. Both characters are shown to be relics due to their inability to socialize correctly according to twentieth century norms.

i don't expect everybody to see things with the same kind of narrative that i do, & i'm all for people ~speaking their minds~ about american cultural imperialism or whatever you want to call it, but the trajectory of a song like this in the broader context of what's happening to our culture, whose voices are being heard and whose are being increasingly drowned out, is p troubling/infuriating to me. also it is just a cringeworthy dull song imo.

Too many slug-fest "wars" for me lately, too many fighters whose skillset is now gunning for the one-punch KO. I like well-rounded fights - the drama that comes from the possibility of the fight going to the ground at any time, etc., fighters working for chokes and submissions when they are on the ground.

A lot of the best fights are lower on the card or in prelims so I just wait to hear about them and then download it.

I have read most of those and I understand the concerns being raised. Given the pop landscape of the '00s, I'm wondering what the theory is that would explain a surge in popularity for racially-encoded white-privilege pop. Beyond I mean just asserting that white kids are all little latent racists just waiting for a chance to mock non-white people. If we have to stipulate that it is possible for non-white people to enjoy these songs for (presumably) non-latent-racist reasons, then do we also allow that possibility for some of the white audience? Or is that simply out of bounds? i.e. Is it possible for a white kid and a black kid in the same 10th grade class to both have Thrift Shop on their iPhones and enjoy it in more or less the same way? Or no?

Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast is a great album from start to finish but the opener "Invaders" always seemed like a cheesy parody of what made the album great, with the band playing faster than they needed to and completing it with a cheesy chorus. Ivan Okhlobystin, a popular star with fiercely conservative views, told an audience in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk that all homosexuals should be burned alive. According to the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda, in comments translated by the Hollywood Reporter, Okhlobystin also compared homosexuality with fascism.

"I would put all the gays alive into an oven," the one-time Orthodox priest has been quoted as saying. "This is Sodom and Gomorrah! As a religious person, I cannot be indifferent about it because it is a real threat to my children!"

Okhlobystin later tweeted to confirm his comments. "The meaning was rendered correctly," he said.

The "bands are unfashionable" line is a misleading assertion. Really, the story is: the big record labels cannot afford to sign and develop bands. Or, rather: many bands simply cannot survive because everyone is stealing their music for free. Yes, stealing. So labels don't bother with them any more.

Tellingly, as a music journalist the big thing I've noticed this past year is the sheer number of bands I've interviewed during their lunch breaks while working jobs at, say, the local council or in the admin office of universities. These are bands with several albums out, who tour America on their holidays. Once we'd have chatted for hours – now interviews are squeezed between sandwiches and that meeting with Sandra in Accounts.

But great bands still exist, so why does the list not include Nottingham quartet Baby Godzilla, currently the most exciting new heavy band in the country, or unhinged rickets-stricken Dickensian urchins Fat White Family? Why no head-bending skronk jazzers Melt Yourself Down? Because all are too volatile and fringe for an industry-backed poll that relies on fiscal success to keep its job. Solo artists are easier to manage and cheaper to sustain.

not for me to say who 'should' be in a list created by polling a large number of people - this is more about opportunity than anything else, about who makes the movies in the first place. there are way, way fewer female and black directors to start off with, at least making widely-distributed films

The empty buildings include a row of 10 mansions worth £73m which have stood largely unused since they were bought between 1989 and 1993, it is believed on behalf of members of the Saudi royal family.

Exclusive access to now derelict properties has revealed that their condition is so poor in some cases that water streams down ballroom walls, ferns grow out of floors strewn with rubble from collapsed ceilings, and pigeon and owl skeletons lie scattered across rotting carpets.

EZ

JUST GOT MY HORSEPOWER 4BEAT YARDCORE NEW FLESH REMIX OF STICK'N'MOVE IN THE MAIL

BUT TRUST ME ALL THESE PRODUCERS HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO

IF U LOOK AT D&B WHERE MANS LIKE DIGITAL, SPIRIT, TOTAL SCIENCE, PENNY BLACK CREW ETC HAVE BEEN SPECIALISING PON THESE THINGS FOR THE LAST DECADE, THE DUBWISE D&B SIDE IS SIMPLY LIGHTYEARS AHEAD OF THIS CREW

HOW MANY PROPER "DUBSTEP" RELEASES HAVE THERE ACTUALLY BEEN? LESS THAN 20?

YOUR "BEST LABEL IN DA GALAXY" TEMPA ONLY HAS 6 12"S UNDER ITS BELT .. I AINT GONNA FADE THEM COS I GOT 3 OF THEIR RELEASES + THEYRE HEAVY .. BUT COME ON .. AT THE MOMENT THERE'S A LOT OF POTENTIAL BUT I THINK ITS 90% HYPE AND 10% ACTUAL TUNES

SAW AN INTERVIEW WITH THE MAN DIGITAL.. SAID HES BEEN MAKIN A BIT OF 139 BPM STUFF.. TRUST ME THIS IS THE MAN BEHIND SOME OF THE SICKEST DUB+BASS TUNES IN JUNGLE HISTORY.. DEADLINE, SPACEFUNK, SKYLINE, WATERHOUSE DUB, GATEMAN, RAS78.. IF HE COMES THRU AND RELEASES TUNES THEN WATCH OUT.. BIG TINGS AGWARN

BUT THE PRODUCTION STANDARD + CONSISTENCY JUST AINT THERE YET WITHIN THE HANDFUL OF PRODUCERS ALREADY IN THERE

Everything in its right place
Pyramid song
National anthem
You and whose army
How to disappear
Optimistic
In limbo
Idioteque
Dollars and sense
Morning bell
Like spinning plates

I think they're an underrated group. I think Justin's a very sharp songwriter, who knows exactly where he and they are going. Heard from several people connected with the group that he insisted on leaving several songs off the second album that everyone else thought were the best, because he insisted they weren't Vaccines songs. And I'm inclined to credit that to a clear eyed view of his audience than blind stupidity.

Also … he is incredibly nice. He recently went to my friend's house – whom he'd never met – to record some guitar parts for an album, because I emailed and asked him to. I'm not his best mate or anything - have met him three times. That struck me as an act of staggering decency.

this seems exactly to appeal to foreigners who buy into the aggresively parochial / prole art threat wing of uk eighties nineties indie

would usually expect to hate anything described as 'punk fucking rock' but even so, this isn't good

there is an aesthetics of resistance here though exemplified by the person in the trackies with the can of spesh or supermarket vodka lingering in the background, the sort of performative grottiness and debased nihilism that limns its way through most of the other culture heroes namechecked itt, though not as tryhard-commonplace as this lot

shouty bloke reminds me a bit of mid 00s fall copyists prinzhorn dance school who i will sort of rep for

I was visiting a friend in Heptonstall, near Hebden Bridge, when the death of John Lennon was announced on TV. I just couldn't believe it and had to go out for a long walk to set my head straight. It's one of only two instances where I'll never forget where I was when I learned about tragic deaths on TV, the other, of course, being 9/11.

Was reading somewhere a critique that basically amounted to "Scorcese doesn't know when to stop." Doesn't he though? That's one of the most impressive things about this movie. Trim each scene by a minute or two and you'd have very different movie. Like, yeah we see what the point is and where things are going but the obsessive compulsive repetition, always going back for one more, strikes me as very pointed and controlled here. It's amazing to behold.

HMV in Selfridge’s is now shut. I had the feeling this would happen after we went there last week and they had NO new releases in stock. Now the whole area has been sealed off like a sarcophagus.

The Bond Street HMV hasn’t gotten any better either. Full of bemused tourists with their luggage, elderly people and care-in-the-community types muttering loudly to themselves. It had nothing that we wanted to buy.

I don’t know that whoever was responsible for the HMV decisions realised how convenient and natural the Oxford Circus one was for a record shopping expedition – you looked in all the places in and around Berwick Street, came out on Oxford Street, crossed the road and there it was; the big finish. The Bond Street one is awkward to get to, and because TfL/Mayor Of LondOFF have “revamped” the bus stops in Oxford Street – i.e. gotten rid of half of them – even riding there on the bus involves a long walk which, being Oxford Street, becomes an arduous obstacle course. I actually had chest pains as a result of going there yesterday and so, for the good of my health if nothing else, I don’t think I’ll ever set foot in an HMV again. No wonder a recent shoppers’ survey found them to be nearly as bad as WH Smith (which was bottom of the list).

It’s a long, LONG way from what it used to be. But then sometimes I think that everything is.

Personally I love the early surrealists idea of destroying barriers between artist & audience, introducing new techniques (automatic writing, collage, dreams) that make it possible for the proletariat/workers/unwashed masses to not only understand a new art but to create it. To this day I have a lifelong hatred of art snobbery.

Dolman’s self-titled debut album - out now on new Bristol imprint Inflexion Point - is a highly cinematic affair featuring a variety of instrumentals and tracks fused by guest vocalists. Their union has produced a quite extraordinarily atmospheric, eerily beautiful album, rather like the soundtrack to a film that doesn’t yet exist.

It's so lifeless to the extent that the whole thing seems to be made begrudgingly. It's actually not as offensive as you might imagine because it seems like nobody involved truly cared.

My family went into central London last week. After they'd gone, I found myself checking the web for reports of bomb blasts. Absurd and paranoid of me, of course. Rationally, I know that a motorist is more likely to kill you than a terrorist. Ever since Iraq, I have also known that the intelligence services' "threats" can be imaginary. But I know this, too, and so does everyone else: if a bomb explodes, no one will think that a "militant atheist" has attacked his or her country. No one will mutter: "I wonder if someone has taken this god delusion argument too far." Or: "Atheists should have known that violent words lead to violent deeds."

It is interesting, isn't it? There was a time when listening to Squarepusher's "big loada" made me feel like I was listening to pop music of the 22nd century. When I listen to it now, it's almost as if I'm listening to an old Neil Young record. It's great, amazing, but it's in the past. That is not to say that Tom Jenkinson isn't a progressive musician...all those original Warp fellows are quite brillliant minds. But if you're looking for what the future holds for IDM, it's hybrids. It's always about the hybrids. As composer Morton Feldman said "Don't knock the hybrids, they're the only thing left." I believe IDM will become something else, which will become something else. Sometimes though, honestly, to label something is to kill it immediately. So perhaps IDM never lived. Oh, deep thought.

Squarepusher, to me, cant sound "95" or "drill n bass" or whatever. Even though he uses those classic sounds. His music tears up so much shit and has so much variety, that it actually trancends genres, years, bullshit, alltogether. Today I was listening to Hard Normal Daddy. Odd – I clicked on the link at the top and was rudely told by U Tube that I was not allowed to listen, so I went to You Tube and listened to the first couple of tracks there. My first encounter (and thank you LRB for making this possible) is that it’s chirpy, quite addictive but very derivative. Seems to be a universal hurdle in all kinds of music until a Coltrane, Mozart or even a Gabriel comes along to push out the boundaries. I will probably try another couple of tracks but as somebody once wrote “it’s like farting Annie Laurie through a keyhole, all very clever but where does it get you?”

By Abert TOP 1000 REVIEWER on October 20, 2010

Ms. Larrocha's piano sound is exceedingly majestic and expressive. The characterisations are just right, with a full-fledged Iberian atmosphere. There is passin and prowess, on top of searing pianistic nuances throughout the performances. You would not guess that this is a lady pianist.

One would like to compare Larrocha with her South American colleague Martha Argerich. Argerich does not display the same temperament as Alicia de Larrocha in many respects: Argerich is more inflammatory and less refined, as the different nationality of them depicts the different innate temperaments. The Spanish tend to be more refined and sophisticated on top of a passionate Iberian nature, while Argentinians are outright more volatile.

The game was influenced by the films Pulp Fiction and The Big Lebowski which features many lines of dialogue and characters lifted from both films. A few primary examples would be the main antagonist "The Kingpin" being heavily inspired by the Marsellus Wallace character from Pulp Fiction. The boss you encounter known as "The Jesus" shares the same name and personality as the Bowling champ from the film The Big Lebowski. Also, much of the NPC dialogue is lifted from movie characters. Many generics NPCs will say "Forget about it huh", which is another direct line from the film The Big Lebowski and many female NPCs will quote Jules from Pulp Fiction's "That's cool and the gang!" phrase.

CSI:Ambleside is the eleventh album by UK rock band Half Man Half Biscuit, released in April 2008.

As with most Half Man Half Biscuit records, there are many pop cultural references, and references to Northern and Welsh towns throughout. For example, the "CSI" in the title is a reference to the CSI franchise, in ironic juxtaposition with Ambleside, a small town in northern England.

The album was fairly well received, and the track 'National Shite Day' has received praise since, Tim Jonze of The Guardian newspaper referring to it as, "Hilarious and depressingly true", and "Definitely the only [song] to mention A man with a mullet going mad with a mallet in Millets"[4]

Re: blasphemy, I've been able to get my little head about this far along:

- I see myself as fairly relaxed, but if someone gave me shit about my family for long enough, I would probably kick off
- If someone is religious, God might be part of their family life or they might use the idea of God to keep going through difficult family times
- Therefor, for that person, if they kick off after enough mockery of their God, that's not so different from me kicking off after enough mockery of my family

Beatles' "Aryan" music removed any trace of black music from rock and roll. It replaced syncopated African rhythm with linear Western melody, and lusty negro attitudes with cute white-kid smiles.

There are bands out there that are political but its in the interests of the mainstream media to ignore them. My band The Psychedelic Raiders have a number of political songs and have offered our services to the Green party to raise funds.

Sartorially brilliant, he appears to have been birthed by the same clandestine sect we have to thank for the dark-stain presences of Ian McCulloch, Roy Orbison and Harry Lime – although I’m unsure how he’d feel about those comparisons. If, as it happens, you’ve never caught a Meades film, then you’re yet to encounter how startling it can be to receive a dose of television presented by a critically lucid pontificator who simply refuses to remove his Ray-Bans, all the while affecting a kind of stolid, critical pedestrianism that’s perfectly calibrated to defamiliarise and make strange the overlooked and obfuscated elements of our built environments.

Ascending the line of gradation, we come at last to the white European, who, being the most removed from the brute creation, may ...be considered as the most beautiful of the human race....Where shall we find, unless in the European, that nobly arched head, containing such a quantity of brain....Where that erect posture of body and noble gait? In what other quarter of the globe shall we find the blush that overspreads the soft features of the beautiful women of Europe ...? Where that nice expression of the amiable and softer passions in the countenance; and that general elegance of features and complexion? Where, except on the bosom of the European woman two such plump and snowy hemispheres, tipt with vermilion? 14

4.0 out of 5 stars Eine Symphone Des Graunes, 3 Mar. 2001
By A Customer

This review is from: Volume Contrast Brilliance (Audio CD)

The monochrome set are one of those band that are very difficult to categorise and even harder to explain why you like them.
There sound can best be described as indie but song like Alphavilee (strangely not on the greatest hits album) echo the film of John Luke Goddard more than any punk rock anthem. The under produced guitar sound provides and excellent backup drop to the clever if slightly incomprehensible lyrics of Bid.
The grating percussion on He Frank is sill a sound to be equalled while there are some week track on the record (so only 4 stars) it still contains the classic "Lester leaps in" the anthem "fun for all the family" and the extremely witty and relevant "Jet set Junta"

nakhchivan, Thursday, 16 April 2015 21:43 (nine years ago) link

And a lot of their best songs work on several levels - yeah, a lot of their songs are plain fun, but they DO bear up to scrutiny - look beyond the fun and frolics, and there's a musical sophistication there.

The habitation of Shompens is the Great Nicobar which is the largest among the Nicobar Group of Islands. Like the Nicobarese, they belong to the Mongoloid race. The Shompens have two divisions, the smaller division being known as Mawa Shompens. They inhabit areas very close to the coastal region along the river valleys. They are very shy. They are quite intimate with the Nicobarese. The major group of shompens are the hostile Shompens living in Alexendra and Galathia river areas and also on the east coast of the area in the interior of the island. In the past, frequent attacks are believed to have been made on the Mawa Shompens by the hostile Shompens. But now such hostility has stopped. It is probably because they have been largely reduced in number due to various diseases. The Shompens are the victims of disease, and physically very weak. With the establishment of the settlement at Campbell Bay in Great Nicobar, Shompens have been visiting the settlers and they are gradually shaking off their shyness and indifferent attitude towards the civilized people.

how about a ridiculous thought experiment, because hey it's tuesday afternoon.

imagine we colonize another planet. the planet is earthlike, except that it's unoccupied and pristine and isn't a shithole. (don't worry about the practicalities of space colonization. just imagine it's almost like an earth-annex, or a newly discovered continent, that's easy to get to and develop)

do you think that we'd colonize in a deliberately sustainable way, net-zero energy consumption if possible, taking care not to obliterate local biodiversity and to avoid overpopulation? or do you think we'd just trash it? would the answer change if there were numerous new planets to colonize?

NME: 'Music is still what we stand for'
http://www.musicweek.com/news/read/nme-music-is-still-what-we-stand-for/062237

NME editor Mike Williams is "phenomenally pleased" with initial responses to the news that NME is going free, but is keen to emphasise that "music is absolutely, unequivocally, the heartbeat of the brand".

Speaking to Music Week after news broke yesterday that the magazine would drop its retail price from September 18, Williams (pictured) said: "The headline news is that NME has gone free as a weekly magazine, but the story as far as we're concerned is that this is a total brand transformation. For us, this is about developing all of the platforms and making sure we're really strong right across them; making sure we're able to produce great content that people really want to enjoy and share, regardless of whether that's on their mobile or via a print product."

Williams, who took on the editorship of the Time Inc. publication in 2012, downplayed reports that the magazine would be expanding its content remit to include the likes of film, video games and politics at the expense of its music coverage. He said: Music is absolutely, unequivocally, the heartbeat of the brand. It's absolutely what we stand for. What we're saying with this is that we're making more of a noise about the things we already do. We already talk about film, TV, politics and social issues - whatever we think is interesting to the audience.

"What we're going to do is really galvanise that and make it more important within the brand, and make sure everyone knows that we do it. All of the things that inspire music and inform music, and all the things that music inspires and informs - that's part of the music world, and for us to be able to talk about the things that are happening that aren't just music is a natural thing for us. You can't say strongly enough that music is still what we stand for. We can use music as a gateway into a wider world of culture, entertainment, and all of the different subject matters that we mentioned in the press release."

The editor couldn't discuss whether new staff would be hired, instead claiming: "We'll address other issues as it gets closer to launch time."

He added: "We wouldn't go into something so monumental without spending a lot of time talking to the audience and researching this inside out. The overwhelming response from the audience was that there really is still an appetite for print, it's just not necessarily a product people are used to and in the habit of paying for. People felt that free press is attractive, NME doing free press is really attractive, so for us, as we rethought what the brand could stand for and how big we could make it, it was a no-brainer to make print a part of that."

There are many unanswered questions from the above comments.

However, lets look at the NME under the last 3 editors,

Wilkinson - NME heritage era - reliance on the past, no much going on in new guitar music, particularly in a British context. Declining sales, no risk strategy - stick to the familiar past.

re "when they say its not going to focus on indie guitar acts" - this is a statistical fact of the past few years, only one new landfill band has emerged over the past few years the dreadful Catfish and the Bottlemen - most of the sorry losers on that ilm swagger page are rightly ignored.

Murrison - Post-landfill Pitchfork exists era

McNicholas - Landfill era, any rubbish scruffy British guitar band lauded and given coverage.

what of the future, now going free the NME doesn't have to worry about putting a new / emerging / this decade artist on the front - at the risk of losing sales. I can see a gradual shift back to the Murrison era. More front covers for in the next year or so for the likes of Wolf Alice, Courtney Barnett, Alvvays, Chvrches, Tame Impala etc. Shifting away from the 60s / 70s / 80s / 90s/ 00s - front covers.

however looking ahead to forthcoming releases, what could the NME promote to the front cover? the media is reliant on the release schedule, it's difficult to identify artists the NME is likely to put on the front cover that they previously haven't featured.

What the pop papers say: NME pulls a surprise
This week's cover band is Wolf Alice.

Last week's cover band was Florence.

That's two female-fronted acts in two weeks.

The last time that happened? November 2003, when Kylie followed The Distillers.

If you don't think Kylie counts, and are looking for the last time two rock acts with female leads followed each other on the NME cover, you'd have to go back to the end of September 1998, for Hole followed by PJ Harvey.

what the NME are proposing is very similar to Ireland's Hot Press magazine that has existed in that format for decades. However as Ireland is dominated by Dublin and has a much smaller population than the UK - it's much more easier to reflect music / culture / society.

Hot Press
http://www.hotpress.com/

about:
http://www.hotpress.com/1278263.html

For over 30 years, Hot Press has consistently rattled the cages of Irish society and broken exciting new ground in contemporary journalism. With an abiding commitment to music at its core, it remains the essential guide to rock, pop, dance and all the best in contemporary music, both nationally and internationally. That means the big names, of course, from U2 to DJ Shadow, but it also means the first coverage of new acts who might one day make big waves of their own.

But Hot Press is also about more than music. Its current affairs, cinema, sport, humour, books, fashion, politics, sex – everything that matters – receive the inimitable Hot Press treatment every fortnight. And in January 2008, an entire issue was devoted to the problem of drugs in Irish society – looking at all angles, from the point of view of the dealers, gardai, politicians and the addicts and their families.

In addition, The Hot Press Interview (much imitated, never equalled) has become a national institution, with a well-deserved reputation for being the most rigorous, incisive and talked-about forum in Irish journalism, as everyone – from UN human rights ambassador Mary Robinson to maverick novelist Will Self, from disgraced politico Charles Haughey to chameleon thespian John Cusack, and from model humanitarian Christy Turlington to Sinn Fein's Gerry Adams – will attest.

Through all of this, one constant remains: Hot Press is a writers' paper, with a thorough commitment to giving space to quality journalism: stuff that's sharp, smart, witty, informed, and, above all, written with style.

That commitment has also been carried through to Hotpress.com, making Ireland's finest music and pop-culture magazine available all over the world – at the press of a button! In addition to the staple Hot Press diet, hotpress.com offers new music to investigate, pop videos to watch, video interviews with a host of Irish and international artists to view, competitions, message boards, the indispensable Hot Press Industry Directory online in full, and the Hot Press Archive – our unrivalled collection of great writing and resource material, going back almost 30 years

Incisive and irreverent...humorous and challenging...sometimes controversial, frequently provocative, always a great read...and with hotpress.com fully interactive – now that you're with us, why not get involved, and become one of the growing Hot Press community!

fronted by Brody Dalle, shouty angry punk singer, black hair, covered in tattoos, can't recall any of their tracks, not my thang - was covered by kerrang alot

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brody_Dalle

Dalle married Tim Armstrong, frontman of Rancid, in 1997 when she was 18. The couple divorced in 2003. Their divorce inspired some of Armstrong's lyrics on Rancid's 2003 album, Indestructible. After they divorced, Brody reverted to using the surname of her favourite actress, Béatrice Dalle, best known for Betty Blue. Dalle has had seven surnames since birth. In 2004 Dalle was re-united with her half sister Morgana Robinson, when the two met at a Distillers show. They share a father, who now lives "in Leeds or some shit".[10]
Dalle married Josh Homme in 2007. They had their first child, Camille Harley Joan Homme, on 17 January 2006. On 12 August 2011, Dalle gave birth to her second child, a baby boy, named Orrin Ryder Homme. The couple lives in Palm Springs, California.

This is actually surprisingly good. Of all the many many fan-made oddities from "the wilderness years" there's a reason this is the most fondly remembered. It's also been made canon by the revived series's inclusion of Kate Lethbridge-Stewart so it's worth a look for that too. It'll be nice to finally have this on DVD.

It's not "made canon" by NuWho. It was already as "canon" as anything else, because they had license to make it. Just like Big Finish isn't "canon" because of Night of the Doctor, it was always "canon."

...No, it's not. You're still acting like NuWho has any control over what's "canon," when there is no canon. Even if NuWho never mentions something or outright contradicts it, that doesn't mean NuWho is more "correct" than whatever else.

Actually, the BBC has been squishy on what is and is not cannon with regards to materials outside of the television show. Saying "they had license to make it" doesn't mean it's cannon by any stretch of the imagination. Beyond the many things from books, comics, and Big Finish that have been ignored (and occasionally contradicted) there's the fact that "they had license to make it" would mean that the Doctor was a human scientist named Who at one point in his life, and that he's half human on his mother's side.

Armchair generals living cushy lives for the most part, but feel the need to generalise every living thing possible to feed their own narcissism and a medieval "us vs them" mentality.
What they refer to as "us", "we", "our culture" and "our achievements" is in actuality defined by the liberal West which they loathe with a passion.

Their definition of "we" includes nearly all European ethnic groups, which in reality have very little in common and hated each others guts before the liberal West untied this group into a greater European identity.

It’s interesting to note their take on mixing and sharing achievements as long as its within the approved list of ethnicities, aka whites. For example, America is seen as a "white nation" when in fact only a handful of European people were responsible for its creation. i.e Brits. At this time the Irish were considered slaves basically. But today they consider America a country for all whites including Irish, Russians, Italians etc

To join this elite group each ethnicity needs to offer an achievement which all whites can take credit for. The exception is Asians and Arabs in which case an elaborate revisionist history is invented where this elite club of ethnicities suddenly all become lets say, "Aryan" and are responsible for all civilisation in those lands. Note the term Aryan has no European origin whatsoever.

The best way to join the Elite club is by being blonde. Any savage Viking past will do. No questions asked.

Don’t worry, “Game of Thrones” fans — the HBO hit series won’t be affected by Brexit.
The massively-popular fantasy series shoots primarily in the U.K.’s Northern Ireland, leading some fans to fear the show’s production would be affected by the country’s decision to leave the European Union. However, HBO announced on Friday that it’s unlikely “Game of Thrones” will be affected.

Sweetie - you lost me at 'Chinese delivery restaurant'. Oh, and again at 'is this a cultural thing'.

Self-respecting gourmets do not eat at establishments that would be summarized as 'Chinese delivery restaurants'.

What passes for Chinese food outside of places w/ very very significant, actual/real Chinese populations is simply not Chinese food. The cooks in those restaurants know that they can coat "Walnut Shrimp" (supposed to come in a creamy white-ish sauce) with the ubiquitous orange thing called "sweet and sour" and the average eater would lap it all up.

And, you're lucky to get real Chinese people working the woks or what have you, at all. Never mind actual 'chef's. These people would never be able to get away w/ making edible food for discerning eaters of the Chinese cuisine - but hey, it's "Chinese" (Westernized), and the eaters couldn't tell the difference...so...

And "delivery" - I don't know - when a business model essentially stems out of human laziness - how high do you think 'quality' is on priority?

To ask "is it a cultural thing", after you've roundly criticized your delivery loot as disgusting...hmmm...smells too much like you wanted the couch-potato convenience of delivery, without the painful truth that it necessarily maps to unworthy, unrecognizable grub, and when that reality threw, er, blew up in your face, it was handy to just tar a whole civilization.

Be careful before you purchase this CD. If you enjoy Cole Porter because of the creative tempos, the mix of rythmns and lyrics, the way that words play together, and the great melodies - then this is not your CD. The musicians are jazz specialists who see a tune only as the base for them to express their own attitudes, and they destroy Cole Porter by employing their own tempos and melodies and inserting long segments of instrument skill demonstrations that have nothing to do with the song. If you like Jazz, it's probably decent. If you like Cole Porter, don't waste your money.

Ugh... 'Happy' is playing on the radio and the only heartening thing about it is that finally it feels like we're coming out of that obnoxious faux-town craze that lasted wayyy too long.
But there's always going to be a 'Shit Trend' in pop music that exemplifies a particular time - usually it involves producers and artists jumping on an actually very credible idea, but pumping out as many watered-down versions as possible before the trend expires.
Right now, the extent reggaeton-lite fad is clearly becoming more than just a fad as it's been going on for years and recently reared its head with DJ Snake's 'Taki Taki'.
Is this the 'shit trend' right now? Or is there something more insidiously bland waiting in the wings? What other shit trends have there been in history, ones that despite being a bit shit seem to exemplify a two or three year stretch?

I think I'd be more excited for a Kendrick Lamar album if I was still listening to any new hip hop, which I have stopped about the time of Untitled Unmastered. I don't think I remember anything from Damn except the annoying "Bitch, be humble" line. His number of features was also ridiculous at some point. But will be happy to listen to the new one about 15 weeks after everyone else because I still love everything he did up to TPAB.

We all have a personal connection to this conflict because our governments are spending billions on arming one side of it.
