Chairman Feinstein (nakhchivan), Friday, 12 December 2014 15:51 (nine years ago) link

Reception

Jeff Benjamin of Fuse found the singer looking "adorably cute" in it.[18] Colin Stutz of Billboard deemed the clip "awesome" and felt that the singer had "hilariously fun time" in it.[35] Pitchfork Media writer Molly Beauchemin commented that the video gets more interesting from the beginning.[32] Stereogum journalist James Rettig also felt that the "really effective" low-key video "gets progressively crazier".[37] and A writer from Rap-Up summarized the visual as "fun and playful" and full with surprises.[34] Patrick Ryan writing for USA Today likened the song's music video to "Flawless" in terms of the similar potential to become a "viral sensation" due to its club dancing moves "that have since ignited Tumblr with GIFs".[11] Spin 's Andrew Unterberger felt that the "slight and formless" song lacked hooks by Beyoncé's standards; however he noted how its fun and fast-paced video could be enough to keep it as an essential part of the singer's discography and predicted it would end up "be[ing] a thing".[38] Frances Perraudin felt that the video looked as if it was shot with an iPhone which, according to him rendered it a "music video the selfie generation".[39] The video was included on Pitchfork's list of The 20 Best Music Videos of 2014 with Molly Beauchemin writing that "Beyoncé brings together a host of modern obsessions: GoPros, twerking, kale. Even though the clip is edited to a T, it gives us a glimpse into Bey’s life offstage: a hopeless perfectionist goofing off at her leisure."[40]

Lindsay Zoladz from Vulture similarly felt that the track seemed like "a bit of a throwaway" until the release of its clip. She emphasized how its video was in line with the overall aim of the album Beyoncé to disassemble the idea of the singer being a perfectionist, but somehow assert she is "a little bit fresher than you". Zoladz concluded her review by summarizing the clip as "aspirational chilling, carefully curated fun, a GoPro feminist utopia... a glorious ode to goofing off with your ladies".[41] Sharan Shetty of Slate viewed the clip as "unusually candid" and "delightfully low-concept" further noticing how despite the acrobatic moves and synchronized twerking, the singer also "injects some dorkiness into her 'woke up like this' image". He described it as the singer's routine on a Friday night and further praised Jay-Z and Blue Ivy's appearances.[42] Justin Block of Complex praised the fact that most of the dance moves were not coordinated enough, further praising Beyoncé for using an "ubiquitous 'selfie-stick' to bring more private moments of her life into the fold".[33] Joey Guerra from the Houston Chronicle felt that the video was not "groundbreaking in any level" but noted it was intentionally not supposed to be.[14] On the other hand, The Michigan Daily writer Christian Kennedy called it revolutionary with "no fear of hyperbole" and went on to describe it as the "most real video she has ever released".[26]

Daniel Kreps from Rolling Stone who felt that unlike the rest of the music videos found on the visual album Beyoncé which seemed like Hollywood production, the clip for "7/11" was "refreshing" and "successfully operate[d] on a low budget". Kreps finished his review calling the "well-shot, spryly edited" video one of the more personal in the singer's career.[36] Caitlin White of MTV News somehow echoed his opinion writing that the intimate clip showed a new side of the singer and contrasted its "carefree, casual vibes" with the rest of the album's choreographed videos.[43] Dose editor Barbara Pavone deemed the personal video "a breath of fresh air" when compared to Beyoncé's other high budget videos and went on to praise her humor, wardrobe and look.[44] Emily Blake writing on beahlf of Entertainment Weekly pointed out that "7/11" was not "glossy" as the rest of Beyoncé but was "just as fun to watch" by being "playful and casual". She futher commented how it looked as if it was filmed in a single afternoon.[45] Idolator's Mike Wass called "7/11" a "mockery" of the singer's big budget videos and went on to highlight the "insane" dance moves throughout.[46]

"There's No One as Irish as Barack O'Bama" is a humorous folk song written in 2008 by the Irish band Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys[1] (later known as The Corrigan Brothers), and set to a tune derived from a traditional air. Production and themes
Main Street, Moneygall where in Ollie Hayes' pub the song was first performed.

Obama's roots have been traced back to Moneygall in County Offaly, Ireland in the 19th century.[2] Moneygall has a population of 298 people.[3] Obama had previously remarked, "There's a little village in Ireland where my great-great-great grandfather came from and I'm looking forward to going there and having a pint," prompting the Irish Taoiseach Brian Cowen - also a native of County Offaly - to invite him to do so.[4]
The village of Moneygall (population 298) from which one of Obama's great-great-great grandfathers came

Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys consists of brothers Ger, Brian and Donnacha Corrigan from Castletroy, County Limerick.[5] The song was performed by the band's lead singer Ger Corrigan, with Aedhmar Flaherty, Róisín O'Brien and Aodhán Ryan, in Ollie Hayes's pub in Moneygall.[4] It was originally written by the established group in February 2008, and the group have since appeared on several Irish television and radio shows.[6] It has since been featured on MSNBC show Hardball with Chris Matthews.[5][7]

The song, which received huge publicity in America and was described as a "web hit" by the BBC,[2][5] became popular after being released on YouTube,[2] and as of 6 November 2008 it had over 50,000 hits, (80,000 by 10 November, 300,000 by 15 November, whilst Black's version had 700,000) and the band reported that they had been invited to perform in the anticipated victory celebrations for Obama, and at the Irish-American Democrats inauguration party in Washington in January 2009.[8]
Conflicts

Ger Corrigan alleged that Shay Black, brother of Irish musician Mary Black, "hijacked" the song and claimed a co-writing credit while failing to acknowledge Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys' authorship of the original version, a charge Black denied.[5][6][7]

It is very simple, he sent me an email in June asking if he could add some verses for a band camp he was holding … It was then posted on YouTube as if it had been written entirely by him - a claim repeated on his own website and by bloggers and national media. He never gave us any credit.... We demanded he take it down but he refused. This is a complete hijacking; if I add two verses to "Hey Jude" it doesn't mean I wrote it. To say we are not impressed is an understatement - this is pure opportunism.
—Band member Ger Corrigan in reference to Shay Black, as reported by the Limerick Leader.[5]

Both sides sought legal advice; the band contacted YouTube's solicitors as well as a copyright solicitor before announcing in a press release that the dispute had been resolved.[5][6][9]

Journalist Fintan O'Toole criticized the song in The Irish Times for "its ignorance of cultural history", claiming that it was inappropriate given Irish Americans' history of racism against African Americans, and that emphasizing Obama's Irish heritage would be "muscling in on his parade".[10] Canon Stephen Neill, the rector of Moneygall who accompanied the band on their American trip, responded that it was only a pop song, and that African Americans had universally welcomed them.[11]

Ger Corrigan later reported that the Corrigan Brothers had signed a deal with Universal for two singles and one album, with an option on a second album.[12][13]

In March 2011, the Corrigan Brothers released a new version of their song for radio play to celebrate Barack Obama's visit to Ireland the following May. Entitled Welcome Home President Barack O'Bama, the song focused on Obama's visit to his ancestral home in Moneygall.[14]

Agreed. I know Cortana has region specific features, but why not just lock those out, instead of her voice functionality? Seems dumb to me. They've tried to bundle in all the assistant features that a lot of people don't care about (I know I never use them) into the voice control functions, and then say "Oops, sorry. Can't let you use Cortana because the stuff you don't even use won't work.

I have had the Nokia 620 for nearly three years on PAYG and very happy with the phone so will be upgrading to a larger screen version when the price falls. Microsoft systems are certainly back on track and improving all the time, it’s what competition does when it works.

a few things:

1) I completely....completely forgot that McG was talking about a 'surreal' Terminator film in the early going until I re-read this thread. And I even remember the early trailers bearing that out. Then the film comes out and there's NONE of that at all, and it's just an action film with straightforward narrative and shots. What happened here? Did McG abandon the surrealist approach midway through? Does he not know what "surreal" means? idgi

2) Rewatched the first Terminator flick and although I've always loved it, the thing I appreciate the most is how it manages to be epic in scope w/out being epic in length. I've always enjoyed car chases in 60s-80s films more than today's because they overengineer them, but the car chases in this film are fantastic in their unhinged nature. I loved the chases in T2 as well, but they had a feeling of being more choreographed (a la Die Hard choreography w/ vehicles), which, while it was cool and all, paled in comparison to the off the wall recklessness of the chases in the original.

What was also cool is how it was believable in context. Reece has driven cars before, obviously, but only in battle. He's only used to driving recklessly, presumably he wouldn't even know what the traffic signals meant. and he grabs for his shotgun when he gets out of the car to face the cops not as a suicide mission but because he has no clue how the police operate and he's so battle tested, it's reflexive!

3) Unless I missed it, the term "Skynet" does not actually appear at all in the original Terminator. It's weird as I always remembered it being mentioned in Reece's monologue, but he only describes it in a roundabout way as being a project for NORAD.

4) The first Terminator was the best sheerly because it was the only film of the tetralogy not to have cyborgs exceeding their scope. T2 had Arnie acting like a curious robot trying to be human, which aggravated the shit out of me (oh yay, family friendly Terminator), whereas T3, while Arnie's robot was more grounded (except for the cringe-inducing humor and the psychoanalytic bullshit), you had the damn Loken-bot orgasming at John Connor's DNA, and having a look of fear upon her termination. bulllshiiiiit.

5) MVP for the first Terminator really goes to Arnold's facial expressions. Dude was never a great actor, but his face work in this film is actually pretty amazing - never over the top, always believable in the context of a cyborg attempting to assimilate into a society it's never seen before. the way his eyes bug out when he's processing something always wigged me out as a kid.

6) in a way, the later Terminator films kind of stretched the suspension of disbelief to the breaking point with the extra-sophisticated newer model Terminators. I get that they did this because hey, we have this big special effects budget now, let's Manhattan Project flex our muscles to the world, but i nthe context of the first film, you found it somewhat believable that humans could mount a resistance to the machines. The T-101, while difficult to destroy, was destroyed in the sense you'd expect - organically, through much wear and tear. It wasn't invincible, it was merely difficult to destroy given its extra-sensory abilities, and powerful chassis. In the future, against plasma weapons, I could see humans picking them off.

The T-1000 and the T-X, though, with their liquid metal bullshit? How the hell would the humans of the future stood a chance against an army of them? They could imitate more than voices, they could outright imitate other people!! In a way, it bugged me because my strategic brain enjoyed thinking of ways Hamilton and Biehn could off the T-101 in the original, and comparing it to how they actually managed to...whereas in the 2nd and 3rd, I was kinda like "idk what teh rules even are, how the hell WOULD you destroy one of these?"

I hope the additional films never get made.

Inspector George Gently (titled George Gently for the pilot and first series) is a British television series produced by Company Pictures for BBC One, set in the 1960s and based on some of the 46 Inspector Gently novels written by Alan Hunter. The series features Martin Shaw as the eponymous Inspector (later Chief Inspector), Lee Ingleby as Detective Sergeant (later Detective Inspector) John Bacchus, and Simon Hubbard and Lisa McGrillis in supporting roles as police officers. The series moved the setting of the stories to North East England, centering on Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and County Durham as opposed to the Norfolk portrayed in the books. As the series begins, the death penalty is still in effect in Britain and is used as a plot feature in some early episodes; the penalty was abolished in 1964, a change noted in the series. The earliest episodes are set in 1964 and the series progresses in approximately real time, with the closing scenes of series 7 taking place on 1 January 1970.

Production history

In January 2010 it was announced that the BBC had secured funding from the North East Content Fund to produce further episodes of the detective drama. Series 4 was filmed from early to mid-2011 and shown that autumn. On 26 March 2012 the BBC announced that four new feature-length episodes were being produced to air later the same year.[1] Series 5 ended on a dramatic cliffhanger, with the fate of both leading characters uncertain. However, in September 2012, the lead writer confirmed that a sixth series consisting of four episodes had been commissioned.[2] This sixth series aired from 6 February to 27 February 2014 on BBC1. A seventh series containing four episodes has been commissioned by the BBC and has aired on the same channel beginning 29 April 2015.[3]

This will turn into a case that will have both Gently and Bacchus questioning what it means to be a police officer, at a time when attitudes towards the police are changing. The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry indulged in a spot of brotherly rivalry over who was handier at DIY in a televised project to turn a derelict Manchester street into homes for ex-service personnel.

The pair donned their personalised hard hats and steel-toe boots, rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in after William declared it was “game on”.

I think it was very tastefully done. The overall look does not scream cartoon. The men's outfits are great, bridesmaid dresses cute, and bride beautiful. Just enough minion but not to much. Love the creativity and overall thought. Glad you had super fun and lots of love throughout your marriage.

Could he be the one? Is this finally IT….

Mr Silver and I had this experience at Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant, Hakkasan in Mayfair, a restaurant that we loved so much that we’ve returned to it many times with friends and loved ones. And when we came to New York it seemed only natural that we would visit the Stateside branch of this restaurant that was so special to us.

RNS: Much of mainstream Christianity–especially in the Western white church–has taken on a look (skinny jeans and graphic tees), sound (anything resembling Chris Tomlin), and smell (fair trade coffee aroma and a whiff of a concert-grade of machine, please). Are these cosmetic expressions of Christianity a problem in your opinion?

JW: I’m sure Chris Tomlin is an incredible dude, but I have yet to own any of his albums or stream them on any of my devices. Sorry, Chris! While I do agree that mainstream Christianity has adopted some unique styles and identifying factors, I wouldn’t say that I’ve adopted any of these in order to fit in. I don’t see any of these cosmetic expressions of Christianity a problem, as long as people don’t make these things the foundation in which they build their faith upon.

More than 1,000 people, and dozens of service dogs, turned out to pay their respects to the courageous police dog, who was given a send-off with full honours.

Kye was buried in a flag draped casket to the haunting tune of a 21-gun salute.

The bond between K-9s and their officers is incredibly strong: the pairings go through initial training together and work on the beat every single day.

And gallant Kye made the ultimate sacrifice for his best buddy Stark.

Kristen Felicetti has been tirelessly publishing the work of other people in her gorgeous and inimitable zine, The Bushwick Review, for years now, but it’s currently her own, innovative writing style that we’re feeling most excited about. The zine’s most recent incarnation, issue VI, included an in depth, Yelp-style review of Felicetti’s local convenience store, way too funny to be read alone on public transport.

An artist has painted a portrait of Emma Watson which is so realistic it looks exactly like a photograph of the Harry Potter star.

Nehaal Gonsalves, from Mumbai, India, spent a month creating the masterpiece of Emma and hopes the actress will see his work.

Nehaal chose Emma as his muse because she is 'perfection' and the video that shows its painstaking creation has been seen more than 31,000 times on Facebook.

A woman was left stunned when an anonymous stranger posted a card with £100 through her letterbox as a reward for being a good mother.

Sarah Bartlett, 37, from Sidcup, London was in 'utter shock' when the cash appeared in the post at 1pm on Sunday.

The money was posted to the mother-of-three with a card explaining it was a gift in recognition of the 'amazing job' she was doing of bringing up her children.

“I honestly don't know whether I'd still be a Christian or not if I hadn't met Mike. I consider him to be one of the most interesting and important voices in American Christianity right now.”

Michael Gungor, singer/songwriter in Gungor

"Science Mike is way too funny to be as smart as he is and way too honest, touching, insightful and entertaining to be ignored. What I mean is, I resent his multiple talents. Any time he's speaking my ears perk up like a dog hearing a can opener, and yours should, too. Also, feed your dog."

Pete Holmes, Comedian and host of You Made it Weird with Pete Holmes

"Mike McHargue is one of the smartest thinkers of our time. His understanding of the Universe, and its intricacies, is inspiring and beautiful beyond measure. I can only assume that as a child, he took all of his toys apart and put them back together again just to figure them out. With that same wonder and curiosity, he lays out every tiny, confusing piece of Science and Religion on the table, and we as his readers and listeners get to watch and learn as he pieces it all together.”

Ryan O’Neal, Sleeping At Last

Coffee Rubbed Tri-Tip w/Rum Injection

Remove the meat from the fridge about 30 minutes before grilling.

Prep the grill for a 2 zone direct/indirect medium heat fire.

Using about 2 ounces of rum, inject the meat in multiple places.
