hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite like Gummo.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 21 October 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, but it's not the best movie for a slightly ADD person to watch who "claims" he doesn't like movies

...during the 2001 rolling brownouts courtesy of former governor Gray Davis.

don't you mean courtesy of Enron traders?

Davis had a lot of knowledge about the Enron/PG&E shadiness, hence his recall and subsequent knuckleheaded DUH GOVERNATOR replacement courtesy of Southern California voters.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 21 October 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

re graduate: there's this scene in the beginning of their relationship where it keeps segueing from one scene to another. he jumps out of the pool and he ends up in her bed, etc. it keeps going for minutes and it's super beautiful. and then the whole way they use fore ground elements (i totally can't remember what it's called in photographic terms) that are in focus and background elements aren't and vice versa (like the photo below). and his ennui with the world. why's he in a relationship with mrs robinson? because he likes her? no, because he's bored. just a great, funny, beautiful movie

Yes I saw Little Murders last night.

The words and deeds of people like milton and gygax, maybe even Michael White, have shown me that sometimes, just sometimes, old guys can be be kind of...alright!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

35, so old

see Zulawski's Possession -- I saw it again for the first time in about six years last week, and it went from admiration to top-10 instantly. if you've ever been in love with someone who's just a widdle bit bonkers, you like gothic horror and over the top surrealistic non-sequituous overacting that turns the corner into not-acting-at-all, this is already your favorite film. unbelievable Isabelle Adjani.

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to see it!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I could tell you about all those movies I saw when they came out as opposed to you, who can only see them now

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Tell me about the time you paid sixpence to see Goonies on one of those newfangled zoetropes!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

milton did you vote for possession on the ile 80s movies poll? im a bit worried that my #1 vote was wasted

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it was on at the Castro but I missed it. It is about Turkish immigrants in Germany? It good a great review in the New Yorker.

X-PAT (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes Pierrot le Fou is the best Godard.

Re Tetsuo I haven't seen the second and heard it wasn't nearly as good. First one is insane though. And not subtle.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 5 May 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

second one's worth seeing for the opening, and has some moments. can't hold a candle to the first one though.

'o no, my drillcock!'

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 5 May 2005 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Voila voila. Good old Tetsuo. I think it was pretty shocking when it came out but since then Takashi Miike has kind of taken the splatter to a whole other level.. I am not up to watching any more of his films for this reason. I suppose Crash (the Cronenberg one) should get a mention, and Olivier Assayas, Demonlover which I don't think is good (Irma Vep is better), but it's something, and THEY GO TO JAPAN!!!

Somewhere (prob when reading through thousands of film listings when I lived in Paris) I wrote down a reference to this Japanese film "80000 Hz" which said it was about how turning up the sound as loud as it will go & sticking your head in an amp was as good a way as any to achieve transcendence. Now I can't find it anywhere on the Internets so maybe it doesn't exist.. But how would I make that up? Maybe it was just a festival screening.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 5 May 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:21 (twenty years ago)

if you can find it "13 Consecutive Slaughter" is this Japanese flick about a serial killer who, guess what, kills 13 women, yes, consectutively. The soundtrack is batshit free jazz saxo.

Toshio Matsumoto - Experimental Film Works 1961-1987, bruising electronic noise soundtracks by Takemitsu, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Juji Yuasa, Jo Kondo, especially 'For My Crushed Right Eye' & 'White Hole', if you can only afford one of the DVDs go for Volume Two

Coming Apart has no soundtrack except for diegetic sound & occasional bursts of built-in microphone feedback

Early 70's hollywood sci-fi / horror - loaded down with great soundtracks - Andromeda Strain (lousy film, soundtrack sounds like TG seven years early), Phase IV (moog drones by David Vorhaus of White Noise)

I love the collage soundtracks on WR Mysteries of the Organism and Sweet Movie

There's exactly two seconds of Neu 2 in Kill Bill 1.

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

Re: Amon Duul 2 in the movies: They appear in this really strangely inserted jam scene in Fassbinder's Niklashausen Journey. The jam is pretty cool, if very loose and probably stoned, I'm thinking Phallus Dei bonus tracks or something. The rest of the movie is pretty frustrating, but has its moments.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:26 (twenty years ago)

i just saw l'age d'or two or three days ago, jaxon! it was good. kinda rambling, but what do you expect? last night me & jon & my roommate watched Teh OdeSSa File.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Could someone explain why Assault on Precinct 13, or any '70s Carpenter, is so great? Cuz he had no money and made OK formula genre pictures without being inept?

Eli, Eli, rema, sabachthani?
I haven't seen it, but it claims to be about "the Japanese noise".

I saw it, and other than Tadanobu Asano being one sexy noize-geetarist longhair -- his last solo freakscene is entrancing aside from the music being, y'know, boring -- it's a disappointment. (Isn't it "lema" unless that's a dubious joke)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:09 (twenty years ago)

I saw Argento's 4 Flies on Grey Velvet the other night -- or rather, a butchered print of it that was shipped to BAM -- and the opening credits have a mindblowing POV shot from INSIDE A GUITAR BODY during a band rehearsal! It's like a periscope shot (with strings and a strumming hand added, of course).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Darkstar is great because it involves a ten minute fight scene with a beachball. That, jewfros and black humor.

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)

The Marriage of Maria Braun

This is so great.. but what other Fassbinder should I watch? I've only seen this and Petra von Kant. I was reading the ILX Fassbinder thread and I think every one of his films got recommended by somebody and I had no idea where to start.

Beau travail
Mildred Pierce
The Big Sleep
Cat People (the 40's black and white original)
Pierrot le fou
The Crying Game
Fallen Angels
Andrei Rublev, Nostalghia
Po di sangui
Once Upon a Time in the West
Three Amigos!

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Fox and His Friends or Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
