dear gygax!,

my standard recipe is 2 parts balsamic vinegar to one part olive oil, a healthy splash of lemon juice, and salt/pepper to taste. you could also substitute light vinegar for the balsamic and use orange juice instead of lemon. crushed raspberries are always a good addition if you're feeling sassy.

regarding echo and the bunnymen, my favorite album is crocodiles. my favorite song is either bring on the dancing horses or a live version of villiers terrace i have that's seriously frightening.

they're paying money to dance, dude! DJs work hard, they purchase tons of records, they carry them around, they try to play the right records at the right time and do it well etc. It's that old debate, but a good night of dancing to me is more fun then seeing a great show, and a great DJ is needed to make that possible.

Tim was more of a trip-hop guy who got into the classic disco/disco-punk stuff over the last few years (James Murphy's influence?) The first time I played with him was I think at Lauren's bday party, or was it the holiday party? at Mighty Robot. Dave P, I've DJ'd with as well, he came out of a rock/hipster thing but has gotten pretty good, was mixing really well last time I saw him. He plays a mix of 80s new wave/freestyle hipster faves and newer trendy stuff(Tiga, Black Strobe etc)

But hstencil, how can you expect to get paid to DJ if you don't believe in paying to hear a DJ?

must have been just a local guy -- pretty good -- lots of 20's gospel, branca, etc -- and usually don't dig most djs

even at a bar with normal priced drinks in NYC, say you get a cut of the bar take, like 10%, which is on the low side. Depending on how busy or not it is, and if you're alone or with other DJs, you may be lucky to make 100 dollars, which is for 6 hours of work, or around 16 bucks an hour, subtract almost 30 bucks for cab fare, and consider the time it took to pull out all the records and to get there and get back...it doesn't always add up. And the promoters want a cut as well, so right there you have Dave and Tim and whoever is throwing the party, so the bar would have to do pretty well to make any decent money.

Some of these local shows, like ToddP or Mighty Robot or whatever, pay better then most bars because there's less overhead.

i'm not arguing, and I have to have to the last word in this non-argument. What you call cult of DJ celebrity, I call doing a job. The band gets paid, the bartender gets paid, the guy stamping hands at the door gets paid, the person who emailed the Voice and TimeOut get paid, etc. Being a good DJ required expertise and knowledge and should not be undervalued, and people who grew up going clubbing dont think twice about paying a cover for an evening's dancing, that's money for the DJ for putting in the work and (hopefully) supplying a good time.

1) daddy's on graham ave and frost street and o'connor's on 5th ave and dean street are my favorites. pete's candy store, union pool, and the mark bar are also good. the one time i was at the east river bar, the barmaid was so bored and drunk that she started giving my friend and me cocktails in pint glasses. that was awesome, but it probably doesn't happen all of the time and they might have gone out of business.
