Why Candling Can't Work

Since wax is sticky, the negative pressure needed to pull wax from the canal would have to be so powerful that it would rupture the eardrum in the process. However, candling produces no vacuum. Researchers who measured the pressure during candling of ear models found that no negative pressure was created. The same investigators candled eight ears and found that no ear wax was removed and candle wax was actually deposited in some of them! [3]

The notion that the ear canal is connected to structures beyond the eardrum is false. A review of a good anatomy book should dispel this notion. The external ear canal, with an intact eardrum, is not connected to the brain, the sinuses targeted by the procedure (those above your eyes), or the Eustacean tubes (the passageways between the internal ear and the back of the throat). While some claim that the eardrum is porous and quickly allows impurities to pass through, this is untrue. The "impurities" that appear in the collected wax (usually on a paper plate or other collecting device) are nothing more than the ashes from the burnt wick and wax of the cone itself.

when i was younger i had my ears cleaned by a doctor. shot warm water in and sucked all the wax out. i swear to god a gigantic ball of wax that looked like a piece of chewed gum came out. grody

so i got the new Mono album in the mail, and i got kinda stoned and put it on the headphones cuz i wanna like it even though i really didn't like that last album - actually i never made it thru the whole thing. there was one song that was soooooo godspeedy that i couldn't take it and i took it off - and i'm always looking for more guitar noise, and at first it's great cuz the sound is all albini big and loud and that's cool, but after awhile i end up feeling like it's work to listen to it. dudes keep going up that same damned mountain over and over again. i feel like i'm carrying their bags or something. they have perfected that godspeed mountainclimbing formula, and they are tenser and they attack harder, but it's still...i don't know, it's like jesus are we there yet? i mean i already know where we are going. i ended up skipping to the noisy parts. that worked pretty good.

Keith Fullerton Whitman and one other guy whose name I don't know run this rad reissue label of extremely obscure musique concrete and early electronic music LPs- stuff that is so super obscure that it ain't getting reissued any other way- they put out CDRs in teensy editions of 50 or so with nice paper sleeves, and they sell em on the Mimaroglu site.

I have lots of them, and of particular note I recommend:

jane dragged me to a young pioneers show aeons ago, a nascent locust opening up for them. decent and much better than the avail show she dragged me too around the same time. the band that opened for avail still scars my brain with the lead singers native american rants in between songs but i supose that's hardcore.

hey ian, is there any way i can beg you to make me a copy of the shadow ring'scity lights? i could make you some sort of thing in exchange if you can suffer my terrible taste.

spoonbender nice long piece -- squishy minimal with sound bits from cronenberg film.
2nd black pus -- more trio goodness -- some parts even sound like really primitive banghra.

huh .. the cover for Berry On Top is awesoem. I went to go see Eddie C. Campbell play tonight, and he ruled as always, and this time he did a cover of "Little Queenie" adn the whole time I was thinking to myself how much Chuck Berry ruled... and how much The Great Twenty-Eight really ISN'T enough ... you totally need to get the actualy Chess albums (even teh Chess box doesn't really cover it) for things like "Guitar Rhumba" and "Berry Pickin" ... SO ruling.

twelfth night "xii" so amazed to see that this had been reissued that I bought it, forgot that it's not much cop, though. weak tunes, limp '80's overproduction.

i watched Human Highway last night.

someone i know who has the vhs of that tentatively promised to pull it out of storage and make me a copy. i'm not holding my breath though.

do you have it in a format that's copyable?

Autonomous University of Zacatecas (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 26 February 2006 20:55 (eighteen years ago) link

how's that don cherry? it just got added to rahpsody. gonna listen.

roy ayers "we live in brooklyn baby" could be y'all's anthem!

m coleman (lovebug starski), Sunday, 26 February 2006 20:58 (eighteen years ago) link

that don cherry is fabulous. it's his electric "dancefloor" album.

here's what i said on the ilm thread: Brown Rice (aka Don Cherry) - great album with mellow fusiony, almost rare groove backing. (think Lonnie Liston Smith mixed with In a Silent Way & a tad more eastern flavor). lots of spooky whispery voices all over the place.

Armchair Boogie mint LPs were going for about $10-$15 on eBay prior to the Cat Power covers.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 26 February 2006 21:19 (eighteen years ago) link

that makes me hate cat power so much more. this copy had an old price sticker on the back that says "$9.99"

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Sunday, 26 February 2006 21:55 (eighteen years ago) link

also, the human highway is vhs that is a friend's, so i can't copy it. maybe she will let me borrow it.

yeah.... that's why i got to hear it today. love it! what jaxon said.

i'm listening to Zappa's Apostrophe. it's the first zappa album i've ever heard besides Hot Rats (which i own and is rad). i had to find out why i hated him so much. he really does suck.

is AaronHz gonna come get me

Well, Hot Rats is pretty much downhill after Beefheart stops singing (ie: 2 mins in)

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 27 February 2006 11:47 (eighteen years ago) link

yo cutter, how'd you like the caps n jones discs?

fwiw the last i saw them they were working on a commission project for a pretty big US indie distributor with preselected tracks to use, like they HAVE to use these tracks regardless of mixability - they're just screwing/chopping as much as they can, and it's getting very strange in that lab. i bought a bunch of fried chicken down there one night and watched figure skating reruns while dudes were randomly screaming/storming in and out of doors

LeCoq (LeCoq), Monday, 27 February 2006 12:04 (eighteen years ago) link

I've got Eddie Money, "Take Me Home Tonight" on loop lately, plus old Foxy Brown (aging better than her physical, that's one thing) and the People's History of Dismemberment Plan mix disc that I am way too ADD to get into this week (if i don't ID an orig. version hook in 20 seconds I get frustrated and save it for eventually).

and holy shit this thread has nearly all of my favorite internet while people on it...half of me feels terrible for taking so many internet presence breaks but the other half is like yearbook recall for a trauma-free good year...gotta email you dudes asap
