C0L1N B..., Tuesday, 22 May 2007 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know if I like the Didion essay or hate it. It made me cry but that is not my New York in any way, or my experience of it except in the most romanticized and vaguest possible terms. Still, there is that.

Laurel, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i used to love that essay for certain reasons and now i love it for other reasons, and the reasons i liked it when younger seem kinda silly to me now. i think i like it these days because it's about doing what you feel is the right thing to do, damn the rest.

isn't that sort of a contradiction in terms?

s1ocki, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, that joan didion essay was great. it hit a little too close to home, except reverse the coasts. well, sorta, anyhow...

though, reading it towards the end i kinda wanted to shake her (her young self, not the one that lost her husband and daughter) and be like "you're just not hanging out in the right places!", or something to that effect. listen to one "shakedown street", for goodness' sake! i just mean, that, what amounts to in effect writing off an entire city, especially nyc, seems kinda messed up...but then again, i completely understand if it happens to be such a personal, visceral reaction.

oy, but geography; where one is, where one could be, can be such a mindfuck in that sense. i think about that stuff probably too much. like, what is up w/people who have eternal boosterism for where they happen to live and who seem to feel completely at home? i have never felt that way about anywhere i've lived. i've never had that sense of "home" thusfar. i dunno; maybe if i grew up in new orleans or something, it would be a different story. (just dropping that placename because that is an example of a place where i've met natives who seem to have that kinda attitude; i mean both pre- and post- katrina)

but as for the list portion of this thread, i think that it has restored my sanity to some extent. (except for the potato chip thing, wtf??! the only bad potato chip experiences i ever have are with the overly-salted ones which are too abrasive on the tastebuds)

dell, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i think it's more a 'her new york' issue than a 'new york' itself issue - could happen anywhere but b/c it's in new york, big city of myth and legend and symbol and etc, it's writ larger, has an added bonus twist of the knife, visceral quotient - we all know new york in different ways even if we've never lived there. and we also all know about having dreams and things not turning out quite the way we imagined.

re: cities and identifying with them: well, we have relationships with cities really, sometimes just friends, sometimes buds, etc. sometimes i think that story's similar to finally breaking up with someone really really great and with whom you have a good life, but not a passionate life, and just being glad you made a decision even though everything feels crazy.

argh, that's soooo "O.T.M.", as to be weirdly painful, and, yeah, crazy. all too, (if there even is such a thing?) well said/written. esp. if both geographical and romantical-ish situation happen to coincide more or less in the beginning and/or end.

ouch, ???!!., etc...

i love her too. you should read all her essays between now and your exam!

estela, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 03:02 (nineteen years ago)

I found the essay more emotionally OTM than literally OTM - I mean I'm not from the Midwest or the South and didn't really grow up mythologizing NYC since my dad was from there and my mom had lived there a long time and I was born there.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 03:05 (nineteen years ago)

Erm, my dad IS from there and my mom LIVED there for a long time. That was a strange verb tense flub.
