Not butthurt, just kind of : |, ya know? Kind of a mid-point on the : D to butthurt continuum.

I got rid of the box ages ago which I sorta regret. Maybe I was miffed that techno had usurped house in the zeitgeist. More likely it was just too damn patchy (although admittedly the house box was too).

But. I took a History of American Popular Music course c. 1991 and said history apparently stopped with Aretha's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" since that was the last song the prof played. However, for the last day of class, he asked us to bring one song from the 1990s which we thought pointed towards the future (and, yes, that means yet again the 1980s weren't part of history).

Anyhoo, I remember only three examples of the future of music as of 1991: Seal (!), The Nylons (!!!), and Little Richard's "Itsy Bitsy Spider" (! x infinity). Seal, I can forgive - Prog&B sounded pretty futuristic back then. But the fuckin' Nylons??? Wasn't the point of their music, such as it is, to look back? And come the fuck on. Little Richard??? Worship him but was he the future of anything by 1960 much less 1991?

I was in a rage by the time I walked up to the front of the class to play Zone: "Eternal #2" from this comp which was authorless in a way very much unlike "Itsy Bitsy Freakin' Spider." And boy did I sound a lot like those liner notes while pumping my choice. But it was such an amazing experience. Half the class seemed awakened for the first time all semester while about a quarter were stunned and/or whispering to one another as if I just unveiled Jeff Koons' "Made in Heaven" series (leaving one quarter completely unfazed). The prof was cool at first, asking me where the term "house music" came from and whatnot. But he got downright frosty when the conversation evolved into a gripefest about Rolling Stone. It was awesome. Eventually he had to tell me to sit down since he realized part of what we were bitching about was the truncated history he'd been handing us all semester.

Of course, it all seems a bit silly now if only because the concept of "future" in a capitalist society is nothing to parade about. Still, the very real folk behind Zone get my vote for affording me the opportunity to shake up that bullshit class for five minutes.

P.S. I wrote my final paper on The Frogs' It's Only Right and Natural, imagining it as a collection of songs hidden away in an attic for 100+ years. I got an A but there were no comments on the paper.

Immolation

Death metal, but this act is one where, upon releasing a new album, I'm buying it on day one.

They have a very unique style, they aren't about balls to the wall riffing, but they create a very bleak atmosphere by creatively using dissonance, odd harmonics, and layers.

Certainly, they've stuck to their niche their entire career, but why not if you're good at it?

The second act coulda been really one of 234, but this group has always managed to write music that is both challenging, emotionally engaging, and memorable at the same time.

Unfortunately, listening to The Perfect Element too much has burnt me out almost permanently on the album.

There is no way on earth that Suede can be said to have done the same for indie. It was v telling that when East 17 were asked to name their fave Suede song in NME's Material World column they replied "don't know any". Anderson & co were far more derivative than their press would suggest, even tho Brett made no secret of the fact that he hero-worshipped Bowie and Morrissey.

i think justice is my favorite new dance music discovery of the last year or so. i do think their productions operate within a certain idiom, but i think i'd find that the majority of the producers i most enjoy do as well. i wouldn't disagree that there is an idm-ness to them, but i don't think it sounds so much as studied as labored over. i like very intricate dance music, and i also like things that aren't always so easy to dance to. that being said, it's been a while since i heard any proper idm that i wanted to hear more than once or twice. i really just like the roughness, it's a pleasant counterpoint to the sleek femininity or mopey androgyny of other stuff i listen to. it sounds genuinely masculine in a way that i rarely enjoy with dance music.

while L&PT and beardo threads abound, this audacious album statement really deserves its own thread. i saw Lindstrøm DJ the album during SXSW, but nighttime there doesn't quite lend itself to critical faculties (much less remembrance of details like where you parked or how many Shiners downed or what was in that joint). i recall it being much like an extension of his previous DJ affair, epic and expansive yet taking it too far out at the breakdown and losing dancefloor momentum resolutely.

but as an album, it's a sweet suite, the logical extension of wishing that "Supernature" and "Oxygene" were the same song and that it took up a full album side. jokingly, i told a friend that this is the "Ys of Disco" but in retrospect it's the polar opposite of Ys. whereas i found Ys to be stiff, mannered, and decidedly cool, Where I Go is infused with some serious warmth and good vibes. a shame it's out at the end of summer rather than soundtracking it.

there's a big *big* world of context out there that's shaped how any number of acts are received, and Radiohead's a stellar example of one such act.

While I wouldn't argue that context plays no role at all, I guess I do feel pretty absolutely that there's no context in the world that could get me to enjoy or not enjoy the taste of a meal.

And thus with Radiohead, and thus with music in general.

My enjoyment of particular chord progressions and textures, etc. is far too visceral for that.

It's hard to write anything too soon about them because it takes so many listens for the layers, details and surprises to reveal themselves. My third listen on headphones on a train ride is what put it over the top for me. After finishing it I was wobbly with vertigo. It felt like the songs corresponded with the neighborhoods that whizzed by, each packed with years of memories and emotions. It's like traveling in an unfamiliar country with a lover, having an intense conversation, getting drunk, arguing, and ending the night at 3 a.m. exhausted from intense make-up sex.

actually in my personal experience the younger folks I know are by and large not that into new music (which I find rather perplexing). A general survey of anecdotal evidence:
- a woman in her early 20s who, when we sat down to play some songs together, all she knew/wanted to play was Ani DiFranco and Bonnie Raitt. (Annie DiFranco was old and lame 15 years ago when *I* was in college!)
- another woman in her early 20s who's predominatly interested in old-timey bluegrass stuff, the Carter Family, etc.
- my 18 yo cousin who told me all new music sucks (particularly the Dave Matthews Band, which is what all his fellow college students are into) and spent most of his time while we were visiting ripping old funk/soul and 70s rock stuff off of my hard drive

I was reminded of how much I love her songwriting recently when I discovered that Fearless, Love Story and Change (that Olympic Song) have all been released so far off the new album. Fearless is by far my favourite, esp. in because of its lyrical specificity, which is always one of the strongest things about Taylor's work. (hands through your hair, absent-mindedly making me want you, dancing in the parking lot, in a storm in her best dress, fearless) Love Story throws in some fairy-tale Romeo/Juliet stuff but is also quite good.

I'm worried that she might fall into the trap of hewing too closely to a formula that admittedly works really FUCKING well. I don't see her fucking it up, though. In my Taylor binge this week, I downloaded the two post-album EPs which are uneven, but Christmases When You Were Mine and I Heart ? are both delightful and point in interesting directions for her (achingly gorgeous christmas songs and bluesy organ-drenched mandolin pop?).

No matter how the rest of the album is, Fearless's breezy anthemic whatever will be gracing my headphones on repeat for a while.

it's not a traditional cd case, it's just a card thing with a little folding thing inside with the cd and inlay and stuff inside. presumably done so to give the full effect of the illusion but it just doesn't work. still looks cool though.

so i really dug their demo CD in 2006 and kind of skipped their album in 2008 due to hype backlash i guess... then after hearing everyone say their performance on SNL was subpar i had to go download the episode myself and see.

turns out it kind of blew me away and i am now digging their LP/EP. i'm liking it even more than the demo and really getting a Morricone vibe on a lot of songs. sticking it on my 'pod next time i do a stagecoach holdup.
