from review of prime meats in brooklyn:

"There are really no other downsides to eating at their newest restaurant. The staff is exceptionally well trained and efficient, a crew of handsome men and women dressed as if ready to ride horses back home to Bushwick, where they trap beaver and make their own candles. And a meal in the restaurant proceeds with all the jollity and good manners of something scripted by Laura Ingalls Wilder and scored by the Grateful Dead. It is an extremely pleasant place."

You can see these people standing on Court Street nightly, staring through the plate-glass windows at a dining room packed with brownstone bohemians, third novelists, people with Web sites, with good art at home. They look slightly pained, these visitors from afar wondering about the life choices they made that put them in Chelsea or Park Slope or Montclair, and not down here in Carroll Gardens, this little Italian village off New York Harbor where life is obviously perfect.
what do third novelists look like?

The dining room is pretty enough, dark and cool, with white marble tables and a vaguely Mediterranean feel enhanced by big sprays of flowers. It is crowded nightly, first with dinner parties that seem pulled from rejected “Sex and the City” scripts and then with a late, late, late show of models and people with incredible collections of music and sneakers and phone numbers, accompanied by the people who went to college with them who now work on Wall Street.
But the food is inconsequential.

that's that thing he does.
If you happen to be looking for somewhere to sit beside sleepy-eyed models not eating their oatmeal, or to talk over hamburgers and bourbon about how, if these wave reports are correct, you are definitely going to surf Montauk tomorrow, Peels is your restaurant. Just chain your Dutch bike to a streetlamp outside and stride on in for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

a cheeseburger deluxe with well-done fries, some mayonnaise on the side and a Coke. To eat this meal while wearing a good suit, with a brimmed hat sitting on the seat beside you, while thinking vaguely about the Georg Friedrich Kersting paintings you saw at the Met’s “Open Window” exhibition just a few minutes before? It is to experience precisely what makes New York the greatest city in the world.
