this doesn't surprise me. outside of the Steelers/Pats SB which I don't remember much about, all of the Brady/Belichick SBs have been very memorable, often hinging on a single crazy play (or in the case of last year's, a bunch in a row). obviously this is meaningless but they're really only a couple plays away from having a Buffalo Bills-type reputation

I know someone who tries to go to a different away game every year and she said the Eagles game was the worst by far, just nonstop swearing and comments about her body plus the occasional hurling of a foreign object

can't think of another (north american) fanbase that actively prides itself on being assholes. like oh haha someone punched a horse and lol this dude intentionally puked on an 11yo girl, lmao so philly

mookieproof, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 15:10 (six years ago) link

someone really should break out the semiotics of philadelphia sports fandom. first along the lines of it being a heavily working class city that has been denied postseason success in most of its major sports for many years (eagles have never won a superbowl) and the kind of self-loathing + identification that brings. there are likely racial/ethnic components to this as well (ethnic whites in particular vis-a-vis the italian community here as coded thru South Philly + south NJ aesthetics cf Jersey Shore for more details), and i wonder if New England had as much of a drought if their fans would also have a bad reputation along similar lines. it's also really only poor behavior by the standards of US sports i think - in European sports Philly fans wouldn't even rate. but american sports are so much more genteel. there's also a confirmation effect. i've been to games, bars, have many philly sports fans friends and they're all decent chilled out folks. but every event becomes a confirmation of the narrative. eg there was a holding cell in the old Veterans stadium. otoh "One of the interesting facts that came out of Eagles Court was that 95 percent of the people arrested were not from Philadelphia." of course that could mean they were mostly from Jersey lol.

Mordy, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 15:22 (six years ago) link

and the team itself does not embody those aesthetics at all. chris long donated his entire salary this season to charity. long, malcolm jenkins and torrey smith have been doing racial justice advocacy this season. the team is extremely hard working and cohesive (other teams whose fanbases don't have a bad reputation abide far worse troublemakers even in the division see NYG and Cowboys). the ownership seems pretty levelheaded. coaching and front office staff are all respectable. on every measurement i think the team itself is exemplary. and then you have trashy fans but every team has trashy fans.

Mordy, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 15:24 (six years ago) link

tldr the team is extremely likable. if you hate them bc some of the fans are jackasses you may be victim to confirmation bias, i doubt the philly fanbase is in any real measurable sense more despicable than most other passionate fans in the US and almost certainly less so than in other countries where hooliganism is prolific.

Mordy, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 15:30 (six years ago) link

i wonder if New England had as much of a drought if their fans would also have a bad reputation along similar lines.

the patriots had never won a superbowl and were mostly pitiful from their founding in 1960 until bradys first sb owl in 2001, boston sports fans can obvs be pretty awful but i dont think they quite compete with philly just cause the culture of the city is relatively more reserved, tho compared to the rest of the country north eastern sports fans bos-ny-phil are more similar than they are different, and i know there is some genuinely bad behavior i dont support punching horses but booing santa is pretty funny, and booing kobe who is from there when he won the allstar game mvp was downright heroic

lag∞n, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 15:42 (six years ago) link

oh i don't mean to imply that all iggles fans are assholes or even that the asshole ratio is necessarily higher in philly. (i like sports, i like being drunk, and i'm large enough to not really fear for my personal safety, but i have no wish to return to the nfl games i've seen in pittsburgh, dc or the meadowlands. and my eagles-fan aunt and uncle are very chill ppl.) i just don't think that other fanbases revel in that reputation quite so much, which is enough to make me generally root against them

nor do i think the racial/ethnic components are unique to philly (see also pittsburgh, chicago, etc.) although i am pretty interested in how nyc-area people divide themselves up between the jets and football giants

all that said, probably rooting for the eagles this time : /

k3vin k., Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:53 (six years ago) link

it's strange because you've got bad fanbases who don't show up to games or know any of the names of the players, and then you've got bad fanbases who are drunk shoe-tossing hooligans, and it's really just a straight line from one to the other.

what I'm trying to say is that there are no "good" fanbases, but if anyone comes close it's the Bills, who trolled the Ravens by donating to Andy Dalton's charity and tailgate by bodyslamming each other though tables

frogbs, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 18:05 (six years ago) link

at least you're not the Miami Dolphins fanbase. we hate each other.

I went to the Jets game earlier this year and there was a fight in the upper deck and the dude behind me said "man, must be a Dolphins fan totally wailing on a Jet fan". I said "no, it's probably two Dolphins fans pounding on each other"....they get pulled apart, yep, it's two of our own going at it.

BB: Look, we try to score in every game. I know that’s probably hard to understand, but we try to go out and score and keep the other team from scoring. That’s our goal every game.

Maybe the deal they have with the NFL is that if they spot their opponents a couple scores in the first half, they get a big PI call in the second half.

my too-early super bowl thots:

with philly’s very strong d front and mediocre secondary, the obvious route to victory for the patriots is to throw the ball 60 times and gas the rush so brady can pick the coverage apart in the 4th quarter, a very belichick gameplan. however, one complicating factor is depth, with the eagles having a strong rotation of 7 guys on their line. i can easily imagine schwartz featuring his best guys in the first quarter and the fourth and denying new england the chance to get an early lead or rely on late heroics again. another complicating factor is that the pats won’t have the ball enough if the eagles offense stays on the field. their o line has also been winning its match ups, and ajani/blount plus rpos plus foles making plays when called on is a recipe for long drives. usually the patriots would just absorb those long drives and keep them out of the endzone (regular season: 32nd in yards per drive – 35.27, 6th in pts per drive – 1.65) but letting philadelphia keep their d guys fresh could be game breaking.

if the eagles play their best game and all of the pieces work, it will look pretty bleak for the patriots. in fact, it will probably look just like that first giants super bowl, with brady getting beaten up and new england held in the teens and losing. BUT the elements are so interdependent that if one part breaks up the whole machine might not work. if the running game doesn’t fire then new england gets the ball too much. if foles reverts to regular season form then the eagles will struggle to score. if the pass rush doesn’t make brady uncomfortable the pats will score too much. and there are other factors that make the margin so small for the eagles. new england has a special teams edge that means their drives will likely be shorter overall and the eagles’ longer, and philly’s rookie kicker could become a wildcard. philly’s defense stops big plays on the outside but they are bottom half of the league vs both TEs and wr3s which is p significant vs gronk and dola.

overall, while i do believe if both teams play their best game philadelphia is favoured in the match up, i think there are more scenarios where the patriots win.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:22 (six years ago) link

i don't think the nfl/refs favor the pats (other than perhaps subconsciously, as they tend to play their playoff games at home)

otoh i totally believe that the league *would* tilt basically any scales if it thought it could get away with it/would somehow make more money, because it is run by dumb greedy people

mookieproof, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:23 (six years ago) link

I mean, I kind of get it. The Pats definitely like to draw big PI calls, which sometime appear questionable. They pick up far fewer penalties than their opponents, which is mostly down to better discipline. But many people think they don't get called enough. Gronk, in particular is a target of these complaints.

OTOH, I don't know how anyone with eyes can't see that the Pats constantly make all kinda of sick plays on both sides of the ball. To me, they are willfully ignoring the fact that the Pats are obviously extremely good.

Moodles, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:25 (six years ago) link

heres that article, pretty interesting

“He comes in [to team meetings] and says, ‘OK, we have this set of officials this week,’” said Harrison, now an analyst at NBC Sports. “‘They’ve called 18 pass interference penalties, they call a lot of holding, illegal procedures.’ He briefed us. Belichick, when he coaches, everyone is prepared. Probably too much.”

The Pats are like the Spurs, basically a model franchise w/a preternaturally gifted coach who is able to adapt to virtually any situation and put them in a position to win it all every year. of course one of those teams is in the NFL and its coach is not a cuddly woke dude but instead is Trump's secret penpal so....

I think people have a hard time wrapping tbeir head around the fact that purposefully drawing penalties is a part of the game, even when they've seen a million hard counts, hurry-up snaps, icing the kicker, etc, etc.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:34 (six years ago) link

lol

The Patriots’ knowledge of the rule book is not just to keep players disciplined and help them avoid penalties, Pereira said. It’s also proved to be a game-planning edge. That showed itself most notably when the Patriots disguised their eligible receivers in a playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens three years ago, a move John Harbaugh labeled “clearly deception.” In response, Tom Brady said the Ravens should “study the rule book.”

“Belichick knows the rules. The Ravens and other teams go crazy because they don’t know the rules, and then people think it’s a conspiracy,” Daopoulos said. “He just does a better job on this. He’s better prepared than anyone.”

lag∞n, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:35 (six years ago) link

I agree, but thats obviously not how the vast majority of NFL fans see it.

i think the explanation is obvious - balls love to be deflated

, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:43 (six years ago) link

i am exaggerating for fun and colour but the condensed version is that the ravens, acting on bad information, spite and self-pity, tipped off the nfl to set up a sting at half-time on the afc championship game, as a result of which the roger goodell, acting on bad information and some kind of god complex presumably, ordered a poorly executed inquiry which depending on your pov was either inconclusive or basically cleared the patriots and then he punished them excessively anyway

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link

so were the balls not really deflated are we through the looking glass

the ravens and colts, sick and tired of losing only bc Brady conspired to have the balls deflated so his aging hands could get a better grip, finally found a way to put an end to the Pats' illegitimate reign.

omar little, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:51 (six years ago) link

After the balls were replaced mid-game for fully inflated ones, the Patriots went on to miraculously decimate the Colts.

Moodles, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:52 (six years ago) link

i mean, tbrrrrrr, my own personal pet theory which i have expounded previously on this subboard does include the patriots deflating the balls, in an unauthorized way but not with a result that i would describe as cheating for reasons in the circumstances, but it is as much conjecture as anyone else's published account and there is no legitimate definite by which the patriots could be described as having been "caught cheating" and the nfl just made a laughing stock of itself (again) and ne won the super bowl anyway (again)

deflategate was 100% a makeup call for other shit Goddell wanted to punish the Pats for. of course it wound up blowing up in their faces

the problem is the NFL has no creativity with junk like this. instead of suspending him just make him play with overinflated balls for 4 games. if he suddenly turns into Blake Bortles, well, then you've got your answer

frogbs, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:46 (six years ago) link

deflategate was def iffy. notice everyone is evading spygate.

Mordy, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:59 (six years ago) link

well it is inarguable that the patriots failed to comply with a league-wide memo about from where precisely in the stadium sidelines could be filmed and were punished for their temerity. truly a scandal to resonate thru the ages.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:08 (six years ago) link

In a report for ESPN, Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham contend that commissioner Roger Goodell's handling of Deflategate was influenced by his hasty and incomplete handling of the Spygate incident.[71] Van Natta Jr. and Wickersham argue that the true extent of the Spygate scandal was covered up by Goodell and the National Football League in order to protect the image of the NFL and as a favor to New England Patriots' owner Robert Kraft, who was in part responsible for Goodell's promotion to commissioner.[71] The report alleges a highly complex system in which opposing teams' signals were recorded, decoded, and relayed to Patriots coaches and players on the field during games spanning at least 40 games between 2000 and 2007.[71]. This system also included a personal assistant to Bellichick who had a photographic memory and had the official title "Football Research Director", the only person with such a title in the NFL, he told congress stories about sneaking behind opponents benches and filming their huddles. According to the article a scout team would go out to future Patriot opponents and film signs and plays. They would then make a spreadsheet of all the signs and corresponding plays, Patriot staffers would then hand off the spreadsheets to the "football Research Director" who would match signals to the plays. The Patriots would also sometimes bring in former players of the team they were playing ask them if they accurately had recorded the signals, they would later cut the player.[72]

The article goes on to quote a former Patriots assistant as saying "things got out of control," in reference to the entire system of covert taping and signal decoding.

some great KEY STATS courtesy of warren sharp:

in the 11 games NE has lost since 2014, they averaged 22.4 ppg on offense, which is the exact average for all teams in all games in that period. the 11 teams they lost to averaged over 31 points in those games.

The last season that the Patriots lost a playoff game, they kicked off that postseason with a game in which Tom Brady tied for the lead in rushing attempts (6) and Steven Jackson led the team in rushing yards, with 16 (2.67 YPC).

they have to right? Wentz is still the future of the franchise and Foles seems likely to get paid elsewhere, now. Foles is such a strange story - dude had a 7 TD game, one of the all-time best passer ratings in a single season, and now a Super Bowl victory in which he torched the #1 defense and outdueled a nearly perfect Tom Brady. and yet he's been a backup the last 3 years.

Hi diddley dee, hen fapper's life for me (Neanderthal), Monday, 5 February 2018 15:26 (six years ago) link

I've said it before on the site, but luck and timing is a huge part to becoming a star in the NFL.

You think when he was a backup that anyone would have thought Kurt Warner was going to do what he did when Trent Green got hurt on the Rams?

Green was good, if that injury doesn't happen, I think the greatest story on turf still could have happened.

Same thing with Tom Brady, a lot of people thought Bill B. Was crazy to not go back to Bledsoe in prime of his career. They could have won it all with him too and needed Drew to bail them out in Pittsburgh.

Kind of hard to deny that Foles has the talent to succeed, but if you stick him in a total mess like whatever was going on with the Rams under Fisher - it might not.

ertz call was much closer than ppl are making it out to be itt, i think because the slow motion view distorts it to make it look more like deliberate steps than momentum. i'd call it probably a catch, not definitely. but it was better for the patriots that it was ruled a TD or else philly could've sat on it with a fresh set of downs and run the clock down from the 1y.

I feel like the rule change after 1999 allowing part of the ball to touch the ground and still be a catch accelerated the expansion of the scope of "control" in the league. maybe they should revert to not letting the ball hit the ground, just say a catch is a catch if it looked like he caught it and it didn't hit the turf.

wonder if going for it on 4th is going to become more common now that dougie p has so enthusiastically embraced it and found success. meanwhile pats were conservative on 4th + 1.

it's pretty cool when it's 3rd and 1 and you know that the team actually has two downs to work w/

Mordy, Monday, 5 February 2018 18:50 (six years ago) link

eliminate the PAT do 2pt conversions only

my only qualm is that football taught me how to multiply by seven and going six/eight only would retroactively ruin my childhood

mookieproof, Monday, 5 February 2018 18:50 (six years ago) link

from now on, touchdowns worth 0 points, but merely get you the opportunity to kick the XP, which is now worth 7 points. so if you score a TD and miss the kick, 0 points.

Hi diddley dee, hen fapper's life for me (Neanderthal), Monday, 5 February 2018 18:52 (six years ago) link

still think Cooks trying and failing to hurdle McLeod was my favorite play, that was some real WWE shit

this got kinda lost but Eagles missing that XP early on kind of had a big ripple effect the rest of the game

frogbs, Monday, 5 February 2018 18:56 (six years ago) link

Yep - attempting to jump over the head of someone six feet tall, who was more or less fully standing, while not using your arms for leverage was wonderfully ambitious.

Hi diddley dee, hen fapper's life for me (Neanderthal), Monday, 5 February 2018 19:14 (six years ago) link

so what's the real story re: malcolm butler

mookieproof, Monday, 5 February 2018 19:16 (six years ago) link

no one knows! but here's my nutty theory - belichick liked that rowe used to be on the eagles and thought that might give him an edge covering their receivers? (tho he never played w/ jeffrey who burned him for that early td). maybe combined w/ butler going to the hospital twice the week before w/ flu symptoms? (tho he was apparently totally healthy on wed so who really knows.)

Mordy, Monday, 5 February 2018 19:19 (six years ago) link

i almost never listen to bill simmons but it's quite fun listening to his sadsack post-game podcast

Mordy, Monday, 5 February 2018 19:21 (six years ago) link

seems to me it's probably that Bill is lying about it not being punitive. if it were to use different packages like he clumsily explained, he probably would have reinserted Butler in after he saw his alternate plan wasn't working. If it were due to illness, as some have suggested, Butler himself might not be so angry, but it seems pretty clear he felt fine enough to play even if he was violently sick in the lead-up.

unless Bill had a serious fear of him blowing coverage due to passing out on the field, I can't imagine that there wasn't some other reason, maybe something Butler did to infuriate Bill shortly before gametime. But Bill is used to players hating him by now so idk what that thing would be.

Hi diddley dee, hen fapper's life for me (Neanderthal), Monday, 5 February 2018 19:23 (six years ago) link

i kinda do believe that belichick is telling the truth and it was a football decision. maybe not a well thought out football decision but i gotta think he saw something he liked w/ rowe and something he didn't like w/ butler and got too clever by half

Mordy, Monday, 5 February 2018 19:24 (six years ago) link

i can buy thinking that rowe on jeffrey and gilmore on smith was how they wanted to play the top 2 guys - altho it backfired horribly as jeffrey beat rowe multiple times on the first couple drives inc both the 3rd and 13 and the td - but with the eagles playing nearly the whole game with 3 wrs butler doesn't even get a snap? jonathan jones and jordan richards are trailing after agholor instead? whatever the reason it was v costly.

butler crying during the anthem biases me towards thinking he fucked up somehow. his head hasn't quite been there all season, altho i have sympathy with him given the contract stuff/gilmore.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 5 February 2018 19:29 (six years ago) link

i thought i read butler was on the field for a special teams play or two?

Mordy, Monday, 5 February 2018 19:31 (six years ago) link

he was

Hi diddley dee, hen fapper's life for me (Neanderthal), Monday, 5 February 2018 19:31 (six years ago) link

one st snap recorded. that's like rubbing it in

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 5 February 2018 19:32 (six years ago) link

i think i saw no st snaps all regular season, 1 vs jax, 1 vs phl

meanwhile on the field for 98% of reg season def snaps

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 5 February 2018 19:33 (six years ago) link

anyway, i hear folks here are keeping their cool and the 2nd call to weei this morning was someone demaning belichick be replaced with mcdaniels

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 5 February 2018 19:34 (six years ago) link

its gets missed in all the glory but belichick has lost a bunch of playoff games via being stubborn

lag∞n, Monday, 5 February 2018 19:35 (six years ago) link

Punishment also makes more sense as to why he never saw any snaps - have to think if it was purely strategic, BB would realize his experiment was going bad at halftime and he'd have gone back to Butler or at least began using him on 3 WR sets. BB isn't going to go back on a full-game punitive benching decision simply because the game isn't going well. Though that would imply others knew of the real reason.

going to guess he thought they had enough to win without him. and they almost did!

Hi diddley dee, hen fapper's life for me (Neanderthal), Monday, 5 February 2018 19:35 (six years ago) link

i think the gashing runs that the pats didn't have the linebackers to stop were the biggest single reason that philly kept being able to keep drives going, in the first half especially, but agholor became a really important 1st down target as those runs went away later so that plus rowe on jeffrey early which probably doesn't happen if butler plays add up to a significant factor

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 5 February 2018 19:46 (six years ago) link

simmons' butler theory: belichick's gameplan is to start rowe on jeffrey. butler reacts poorly to the decision so belichick punishes him by sitting him the entire game.

Mordy, Monday, 5 February 2018 19:48 (six years ago) link

that would line up with what we know but must've been a real ott meltdown from butler if so
