one of them can't grow a beard. i think it's either steven neal or ryan o'callaghan.

hmmm, google is no help but does provide this bit of information:

Neal is a former N.C.A.A. champion wrestler at Cal State Bakersfield who did not even play college football. He landed with the Patriots only because he made a telephone call to the sports agent Neil Cornrich, who is a close friend of Bill Belichick, the Patriots’ coach. Neal has a wrestling move named for him, the Neal Double, which is a takedown in which one wrestler pulls the legs of another out from under him, taking him to the mat. When Neal arrived at the Patriots’ camp in 2001 as a defensive end, he was so raw that Belichick once said of him, “We’re starting from below scratch.”

I hate offensive linemen. I was a d-lineman in college, maybe this is why, but I think of o-linemen as total dweebs.

I’m fairly convinced that this is some odd co-opting of Sébastien Chabal’s current look.

Part of it is because both my daddy and my brother also worked in the industry, and people hold me to the standards they've established. To be honest, I don't pay that any mind, but sometimes I do feel like I never wanted to do this job in the first place but I got pushed into it because of everyone else's expectations and now everyone's looking to me and hoping that I screw up so I can prove whatever jackass theories they have about my guts and intensity and I swear sometimes it just makes me want to grab the world by the throat and KEEP CHOKING IT UNTIL IT FALLS TO THE GROUND IN A GIANT HEAP OF SORRY

I love the Doc and I hope he is right, but in my gut I have a feeling NE is going to dismantle the Giants in a 49ers style Superbowl laugher.

My pick: Patriots 38 Giants 17

I figure the score is not as close as it looks as the Giants score 10 junk points in the fourth quarter.

dudez, ESPN website = war is the secret subplot of SB42. Wojciechowski and Pasquarelli seem to love the Pats beyond all reason (moreso even that Simmons right now) and Chadiha, Clayton and Easterbrook can barely conceal their hate and bitterness (tho Easterbrook not really trying). the lines were drawn as early as the whole camera business. some guys are gonna end up fuckin' sore in the office on Monday and the others aren't gonna let them get over it.

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 2 February 2008 05:03 (sixteen years ago) link

as i peruse the news i see there seems to be a few people trying to rake up new shit about the cameragate business at a suspiciously sensitive time, as if trying to unsettle New England, somehow in complete ignorance of the effect that affair had on their performance in the first two months of the season. if i were Coughlin i'd be so pissed.

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 2 February 2008 17:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm really surprised at the Dr. Z pick.

I'm not one of the populace who think the Giants have 'no chance', but I've always felt with predictions that you go with whom you truly believe will win, rather than hope.

However, I respect Dr. Z a lot so I figure he based this on more than just a personal desire.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 February 2008 15:37 (sixteen years ago) link

i think dr z explained in his column a week ago or two weeks ago about how when he was a young(er) sportswriter he felt that the jets would beat the colts and almost put that prediction in print following broadway joe's guarantee. but he succumbed to peer pressure and went with the conventional wisdom that the jets had no chance. he said this is a chance for him to right that wrong.

my prediction: pats 34 giants 27. it won't be a blowout but there won't be many times where the pats are in danger.

chicago kevin, Sunday, 3 February 2008 15:53 (sixteen years ago) link

its one thing to pick the giants - but to predict the pats only score 20 points - krazy

jhøshea, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:07 (sixteen years ago) link

I just read Dr. Z's article and I feel that it was fair and well-balanced, as I expected.

jhoshea--I'm not sure why that's crazy, they only scored 21 last week, and 20 a few months ago against the Jets.

It would have been a crazy prediction in weeks 1-8 for sure, but it could happen. There would have to be turnovers though.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:12 (sixteen years ago) link

yah it would tie their lowest score of the year in a game theyve had two weeks to prepare for. jets game, werent trying; chargers game, brady injured, chargers much better team than giants. aka crazy prediction.

pats gonna pwn eli so hard today !!!!

jhøshea, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:15 (sixteen years ago) link

jets game, werent trying

Somehow I doubt that. That would suggest that the Patriots actually 'took a game off' in their quest for undefeated. I don't buy it.

brady injured

That may still be true today to some degree, but who knows with Belichick's injury report....and I don't know, with me, ailments bog me down more the day after I first acquire them then when they first creep up, because there's no adrenaline to stabilize it.

chargers much better team than giants.

Yet the Giants came closer to beating them...

Note I'm not penalizing the Chargers for the conference championship, they were way too banged up on offense to achieve anything. And I do believe the Chargers defense is superior, but their offense pales in comparison to what it was last season. except for LT, he's picked up where he left off, there was no way he could repeat what he did last year...

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:24 (sixteen years ago) link

dude i hate to be the one to break this to you but the giants are one of the worst superbowl teams ever and the pats are one of the best - this shit will not be close.

jets game - you dont have to take a game off to coast you just coast knowing that this team cant touch you.

and people are reading waaaay too much into to pats v giants part 1. when the pats realized the giants were actually trying to win the game they scored 22 straight points and were ahead by 10 w/1 minute left. that shit wasnt close

jhøshea, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:31 (sixteen years ago) link

That's the second time you've implied the Patriots were giving half-effort in a game. I don't know what Patriots you watch, but I have yet to see that this season from them. The Giants actually played very well, and then the wheels came off at the end.

You can call them one of the "Worst Super Bowl Teams" all you want. The 'weak NFC argument' won't work this year however, because after defeating the pretty mediocre Buccaneers, they had to defeat the #1 and #2 seeds in the NFC, both of whom were solid teams, on the road, one of the games in the most ridiculous of weather conditions.

I put more stock in this team than I do the 2001 Giants, even though that team won their division.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:39 (sixteen years ago) link

but hey, what does Dr. Z know?

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:41 (sixteen years ago) link

i hate to be the one to break this to you but sometimes even great professional sports teams give just enough to win - sorry if that hurts your feelings.

winning two v close games doesnt prove youre a good team - especially when all the evidence from the entire season suggests youre the worst team in the playoffs.

its a complete fluke the giants made it this far. if the playoff were run 10 more times i doubt theyd make it to the superbowl once. and theyre abt to get so fucking demolished.

jhøshea, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't know what Patriots you watch, but I have yet to see that this season from them.

did you see the first jets game?

and That would suggest that the Patriots actually 'took a game off' in their quest for undefeated.

the jets game was the first game of the year, do you really think they were on a "quest for undefeated" from the first game of the year? i think the hype started around week 4 and wasn't really taken seriously until after the dallas game.

chicago kevin, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:45 (sixteen years ago) link

jhøshea, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:46 (sixteen years ago) link

if they hadn't been caught with that camera would that have been as intently focused early in the season?

Um, actually, no it wasn't. You're talking about the season opener.

I'm referring to their 20-10 win late in the season.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 February 2008 17:08 (sixteen years ago) link

ah, i stand corrected.

i still think the pats came out against the giants not expecting to play against the giants starters. i would love to know what belicheck said to the team at halftime. i think that may have been the only game i saw where they didn't give 100% for 60 minutes.

chicago kevin, Sunday, 3 February 2008 17:11 (sixteen years ago) link

hate to be the one to break this to you but sometimes even great professional sports teams give just enough to win - sorry if that hurts your feelings.

Lol, I'll try to console myself later this evening.

winning two v close games doesnt prove youre a good team - especially when all the evidence from the entire season suggests youre the worst team in the playoffs.

Actually, as one sportswriter aptly said about the Patriots performance in tight games late this season, the way you perform in adversity in tough situations often tells us more about a team than the way they perform in blowouts.

its a complete fluke the giants made it this far. if the playoff were run 10 more times i doubt theyd make it to the superbowl once. and theyre abt to get so fucking demolished.

If your definition of a fluke is winning three games on the road, then you and I don't see eye to eye on that.

Besides, I hate to break it to YOU, but that's how the NFL playoffs currently work, always have worked, and always WILL work. It's less about the body of work you put up during the regular season and more about who is hot at the right time. While this is true of other professional sports, it's especially true of a sport that has a single elimination tournament to determine a champion.

It's just that typically speaking, a team that did modestly in the regular season usually did so because they didn't have the talent of upper echelon teams. Occasionally you have the opposite, like the Giants, who had a lot of talent, but underachieve during the regular season.

The Giants that have played the last 4 weeks bear little resemblance to the Giants that had to struggle to put away the Miami Dolphins at midseason. Who, besides the Patriots, has played better football than the Giants in the last month?

If the playoffs were re-run as much as even 100 more times, law of averages states you'd have several different combinations of results, and some of them may even have the Patriots losing a game. That proves absolutely nothing. If you re-ran the regular season 10 times, you'd have different playoff teams too. That's the way football works.

I won't be surprised if the Patriots win--nobody has been able to finish a game against them and they are the best team in the league, undisputed. That fact arguably doesn't even change even if they lose this game--Champions do not necessarily equal the 'best team' in a given season.

However, talk like I'm seeing here is the same talk I saw in 2001 before the Rams-Patriots Super Bowl. I got laughed at much the same way when I said the game wouldn't be a blowout. And right after that game, those excuse makers shifted their vitriol to the officials, claiming they handed the Patriots the game.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 February 2008 17:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Vegas has been wrong several times this postseason already (including all three times against the Giants, who were a 7 point underdog to the Cowboys).

They also missed the Colt game (in which at some points, the Colts were 11 point favorites), hell they wrong against the spread in both Patriots games I believe (I know they did in the Chargers, Jaguars depends as to whether it did wind up at 13 or 14).

for all intents and purposes, I do think they will win. I don't want it to happen, but I think it will.

I merely had a problem with the statement "I'll take Vegas over Dr. Z anyday" as if the Vegas line is an almost perfected method of predicting games. Vegas bookmakers know a hell of a lot about football, but their lines don't come true quite frequently. That's what makes for interesting betting.

It's just that it's hard to predict games, no matter how much you know about football!

Important thing about that last Giants drive was how long it was and how much of a rest it gave the defense. They were totally gassed on the last Pats TD drive, and if NY had scored quickly, NE would have rolled over them for a 21-17 finish.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:26 (sixteen years ago) link

I guess I adopted the Pats because they were the only NOT shitty thing from my POV about living in New England. (No offense, but.. milo z, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:42 (sixteen years ago) link

bill simmons:

If this Patriots season really is a perfect storm, then the Super Bowl should end like that Clooney movie. In other words, the Patriots would charge out to an early lead, throw all over the place, make a couple of big plays, put the Giants on their heels, force the Giants to abandon their running game and put Eli Manning in the position of playing from behind. And the lead would keep growing and growing, and by the time the game ended, New York's boat would have been smashed to smithereens. That's what the football version of a perfect storm should look like.

Will we see it on Sunday? I say yes.

The Big Pick: Patriots 42, Giants 17.

omar little, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:44 (sixteen years ago) link

lol half right buddy

omar little, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:44 (sixteen years ago) link

They keep running a ticker underneath the ESPN coverage saying that Sen. Spector is going to look into why the NFL destroyed the tapes at issue in the Patriots "SpyGate" controversy. The "destruction of the tapes" story surfaced months ago, but seemed to get no traction at the time. Could be a long offseason in NE.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 4 February 2008 03:48 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, that story was on CNN this morning, they interviewed Specter about it. (He is still pissed about that Eagles loss.) As far as the tapes destroyed.. I somewhat suspect it's about this kind of stuff going on all over the league and the NFL trying to pretend its not..

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:50 (sixteen years ago) link

That was the best Super Bowl I've ever seen. Four lead changes. Brady sacked five times (I've been saying it all year: The way to beat Tom Brady is to blitz like crazy!). The Tyree catch was the play of the year. Patriots do not go undefeated. And Tom Petty rocked the house.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:52 (sixteen years ago) link

It's a trivial subject for Congress, but the dismissive attitude of the NFL about the story is galling. And if tapes are destroyed across the NFL, it isn't done like this, in the shadow of a brewing spying controversy.

There have been a bunch of very good Super Bowls lately, e.g., Rams-Titans, Patriots-Panthers. This one was good, too.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 4 February 2008 04:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I grew up in an era when almost every Super Bowl was a boring blowout. The past 10 years or so have seen a refreshing run of competitive games.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 4 February 2008 04:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Tom Brady scoffed when told Wednesday that New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress guaranteed New York will beat Brady's undefeated New England team in Sunday's Super Bowl.

"We're only going to score 17 points?" Brady said before chuckling about it. "OK. Is Plax playing defense? I wish he had said 45-42 and gave us a little credit for scoring more points."

johnny crunch, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Ok...I ain't here to tell anybody "I told you" because I didn't. I'm as surprised as anybody here. Not that it was a good game, as I didn't think it was going to be a blowout. Thought the Giants could win, but didn't think there was any chance in hell they would win.

A game that was largely uneventful for 2.5 quarters turned into a great thrill ride. It was a great game from both teams, but...give Eli a fucking hand. What a game. And his one pick was his own receiver's fault.

I have to say the play where he, by the hand of God, avoided a sack, and threw a pass caught on the HELMET...has to be one of the greatest Super Bowl plays of all time.

Congratulations to the Patriots, I mean, it was still a great season...and even though I loathe them, I respect them. The Patriots were good for football this year because they inspired so many teams to lay a lot on the line.

Whether it was the Giants sacrificing their starters against them in Week 17, Philip Rivers and Gates trying to tough it out despite being royally banged up, it always created drama week in and week out.

I'm exhausted. I had a great time.

the worst thing about this Super Bowl is the endless debate that begins tonight between Dolphins and Patriot fans, as to whether the Patriots getting to 18-0 before losing trumps what Miami did since they technically won more games in a row.

YOU CAN NOT PUT THE TEAM THAT WON THE SUPER BOWLZ IN SECOND PLACE.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I didn't.

I said in terms of greatest upsets of all time, this one is in second place behind the New York Jets defeating the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl 3.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:13 (sixteen years ago) link

well I still have to give second to the Giants just cuz the Patsies were undefeated.

^^^^^^^^^ WHAT THE FUCK DOES THIS SENTENCE SAY

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:14 (sixteen years ago) link

I see why what I said was confusing...

When I said I gave the Giants second place because the Patriots were undefeated, that was to the gentleman that included the Packers-Patriots game as an entry for one of the biggest super Bowl upsets of all time. My response was saying to him that I still considered the Giants' upset the second best because the team they beat was undefeated.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:15 (sixteen years ago) link

see, dan esk, i don't think just b/c a game is close it's necessarily a good game. i factored those games you mentioned into my assessment and i feel like those were just close games, but this was a genuinely taut, well-played game.

This one was the best BECAUSE THE PATRIOTS LOST.

ahahahha...

man jhoshea's given us material for another 8 months

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:18 (sixteen years ago) link

the reasons this game was so good:

1. The Patriots lost at the hands of ANOTHER Manning in the playoffs.
2. Very little laundry on the field during the game.
3. Little to no controversy.
4. Strong defensive play as opposed to offensive ineptitude (cough Steelers-Seahawks super bowl)
5. Both teams trading tds within the last 2:42.
6. 85 yard game winning TD drive.
7. Fuck Terrell Owens. Tyree="The Catch, II". Who cares if they ain't the 49ers, and it wasn't a touchdown pass. Without it, there is no td pass later.
8. Compared to the humongous fanfare preceding the game, this was just a classic, non-pretentious football game with little histrionics until the very end, where they belonged.

I still want to figure out, well, what happened with this team toward the end of the season. did they get burned out? pressure of keeping that perfect record? they looked pretty bad against San Diego and I wondered what was wrong with Brady and the rest of the offense then. heard during a brief halftime interview with Belichick that he was pretty much saying the defense would have to win it..

i want to apologise to Mr. Tom Petty for bashing his selection as the super bowl halftime show after it turned out that his performance was nearly the best thing about the whole super bowl, second only to when they paid tribute to that dude who has been a Giants' coach since 1948. my dad was born in 1948. doesn't that dude qualify for retirement yet?

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 4 February 2008 13:46 (sixteen years ago) link

dudes this game was mentioned on the Radio 4 Today Programme this morning, in the UK!

i watched the BBC2 broadcast last night (this year was the first time ever that the BBC has broadcast the Super Bowl) and it was being commentated entirely by morons and guys who were barely old enough to tie their own ties; apparently feetball is hugely popular among Brits though (i.e. the Wembley "match" between the Giants and the Dolphins this year).. the yokels in the booth kept saying things like "and we'll... we'll start a Europe-wide league!" lol good luck with that fellas

Tracer Hand, Monday, 4 February 2008 13:47 (sixteen years ago) link

if Belichick's gear as DC from Wide Right is in the HOF then they there's no justice in not putting Spags' right next to it. A perfect circle.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 5 February 2008 03:02 (sixteen years ago) link

I can only hope. Unfortunately, I think it really happened. I haven't watched that video but def recall from the start.. was like, where is the team I watched all season? and what was the game plan? it didn't look like they wanted to win, a lot of the time.

daria-g, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 03:07 (sixteen years ago) link

they were outplayed fair and square by a better team, that's what happened to that team. I KNOW THIS SOUNDS INSANE BECAUSE WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE GIANTS AND THE PATRIOTS. the giants front four dismantled the supposed best offense in the league like they were playing a jv squad from ohio. i had faith the giants would win, but not like this! when was the last time the pats scored less than 20 points in a game?? 1999?

i'm just glad they stayed classy at the end. i know you love the pats dude, but christ what a bunch of blow jobs.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 5 February 2008 03:14 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm just shocked that, somehow, over the course of the last month, the giants became a better team than the fucking patriots! WHY DON'T YOU GO MAKE SOME MORE CUPCAKES WITH MATT LAUER, TIKI! LOL!

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 5 February 2008 03:16 (sixteen years ago) link

this game made me feel better about the packers loss, i was like 'are we that bad or are the giants really that good suddenly'. now i know.

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 03:42 (sixteen years ago) link

I read some postgame stuff on the Boston sports site yesterday.. Junior Seau was asked if he'd leave football and was like "I'm having too much fun" (seriously), Brady talked to the media and didn't act like a jerk, but I don't think Belichick said anything except gave a few answers to one ESPN guy in the hallway?

I saw they were outplayed I'm just thinking, you know.. if they'd lost that Ravens game at least and nobody went in there thinking a loss here was like the total end of the world. And I wonder what happens next year (can not wait until next season!!!) if certain people change their attitude from this. brady stops yelling at guys, BB stops being evil. one can hope. I'm still gonna root for them but can't really defend his behavior after this one

brady yelled at guys when he was in ann arbor, that's not going to change. as as far as bb, well.... i dunno, ask bernie kosar or bill's ex-wife or the ex-husband of that other marriage he split up. one loss of a football game isn't going to change anyone's nature.

Not if it doesn't work any more?

i'd wager not too many people would change much about a coaching job that saw a team go undefeated in the regular season, win two playoff games, then lose to the hottest team in the league in the superbowl.

my goal is to now move out of my apartment and into a new one where i can have a satellite dish so i can order nfl network in time for the draft.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 18:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Maybe my gut is telling me I should just go back to where I grew up, buy a double wide and a big ass pickup truck, go hiking in the mountains, and put up a satellite dish to watch NFL network and stock car racing the rest of the time. I could probably do all that for what it costs to rent a tiny studio in DC.

chicago rents, despite being on the incline, are still insanely cheap compared to the rest of the country. i couldn't get a studio in the tiny backwards-assed suburb in north bumfuck massachusetts where i grew up for what i pay for my one bedroom.

Uh.. Hasn't it been an outpouring all season? :) I still don't think Brady did anything hate worthy and hope he picks up at least another super bowl ring. Belichick is pretty bad though.

I will say.. this season after watching a few playoff games in crowded bars (Capitol Hill), going to a game and sitting in the cheap seats, actually reading online forums besides this one.. I realized the extent to which professional sports brings out the worst in 99% of the population

daria-g, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:20 (sixteen years ago) link

dar1a, me and alex yelling that we hate brady at you every week isn't the same thing as a national outpouring of hatred!

milo z, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:41 (sixteen years ago) link

hey I don't mean you guys w/the hate.. during the first half of the season I was stuck in class Sunday afternoon a lot of times so would have to follow early games online via SI/ESPN play by play and fan comment forums, and every single Pats game half the stuff on any given message board was just people dropping by to say how much they suck

I watched Skins lose to Seattle at what was apparently a Steelers bar and by halfway through the fourth quarter people were basically hovering over our shoulders so we'd leave early and they could take our seats. should've stuck around to keep the chair AND watch their team nearly come all the way back and then get beat

At least I didn't go to 51st state for the super bowl (was in the neighborhood and I thought about it).

Because as majestical and awesome as the Manning-escape/Tyree catch was, it would have gone for naught had they not picked up the 3rd and 11, and Smith had to pick up a tough last 2.5 yards to get that 1st, and then get out of bounds!
