The Patriots are unsentimental when it comes to deciding how much a player is worth. It is a smart way for them to do business, but I don't see how Mankins trying to get the best contract he can is any different. It's not his job to help the team cut costs by sacrificing money from his contract (assuming he could get more elsewhere, which I think he could). And honestly, he's a pretty good player. He might not be Evans but he's certainly one of the best at his position.

actually the more i think about it the more i like the chiefs -- amazing running game, cassell has been judicious w/ the ball this year, dwayne bowe is a legit #1 wr

the question marks next to KC are #1 how they deal with the playoffs, which is basically a new experience for nearly all concerned, and #2 the fact that they had the easiest regular season schedule, including just one real playoff team (real=excluding the nfc west). if i have it right they would have to go thru the jets and the north winner to get to the champs game. would love it, can't see it.

maybe i am underestimating baltimore but they haven't really looked too convincing when i have seen them this year. they suffered from crappy offensive playcalling earlier in the season, with too much on flacco and rice hardly in games. it looks like they are doing better now but i don't think they are an O that inspires fear. if NE can keep the ball a little and not have their defense on the field for 40 minutes they will contain them. this is obv the key to the pats' season in general. the good news is that they have mostly been doing a great job of making teams fear being passed on and moving the ball on the ground with that pair of reject backs. and baltimore are sufficiently scared of being passed on.

overall, my thinking is, in any given game if the pats play well they will definitely beat any of these teams with 2 exceptions: pburgh is the only D that could make the NE O look bad even if they play well, and indy is the only team that can keep scoring points regardless of how well NE play. but i maintain that if they make it the colts lose their first game anyway.

pats w/ brady are 6-1 i believe vs pitt? he picks apart that d so i would think theyd have to really give him some new, unexpected looks/schemes

New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman is due in Boston Municipal Court today where he will be arraigned on charges of indecent assault and battery on a woman, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office said.

Boston police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said officers were called to the Storyville nightclub on Exeter Street in the Back Bay around 1:30 a.m. today to investigate reports of an assault.

After police spoke with the female victim, Edelman was arrested on a single count of indecent assault and battery, Driscoll said. Edelman was taken into custody but later posted bail and released by police.

Driscoll said out of respect for the confidentiality of the information the victim supplied to police, she would not provide specific details of the allegation against Edelman.

In a report on the case, Boston police said Edelman was inside the nightclub on Halloween night when he allegedly reached underneath the woman’s costume and groped her below the waist.

A man who was with the woman told police that a man – later identified as Edelman – bumped into the woman on the dance floor. “He saw the victim’s face change into an expression of shock,’’ police said in the report.

The man then confronted Edelman on the dance floor and “threatened to beat him up’’ while the woman tried to calm him down, police said. The man and the woman were ejected, followed by Edelman, police said.

The man and the woman and Edelman were thrown out of the nightclub by bouncers to calm the situation, police were told by nightclub staff.

When police arrived, Edelman denied groping the woman, police said.

However, after the man and woman positively identified him, Edelman was charged with indecent assault and battery.

this team has all of the hallmarks of a 10-6 team that misses the playoffs, and that only thanks to the soft second half schedule. i don't think a pats team under bb has ever been bad in quite so many areas. maybe having a position coach and no one as your coordinators isn't the paradigm redefining genius that no one thought it was, although they have a gen-u-ine ST coordinator and that might actually be their worst phase of play. but playcalling has definitely exaggerated the crazy personal issues.

they just kind of suck

i just think they straight up have no talent on defense -- wilfork and mayo and chung are pretty great, but you could make an argument that no one after that (except maybe mccourtney) should be starting for a team that has super bowl aspirations. they absolutely cannot rush the passer and they can't cover anyone. and of course those two issues exacerbate the other. they've really screwed up the draft.

i think ras-i dowling is gonna be pretty good, but obviously he's hurt

but there's been so many pass rushers in the past two drafts and the pats just haven't picked any of them except for jermaine cunningham but he's not a 10 sack a year guy

he's also been totally invisible this year which is a running theme with their defensive draft picks

reiss at espn (who is v understated about it if he ever says anything critical) has said a number of times that maybe belichick could use a sounding board as far as making decisions in the draft.. i mean, it seems to me they have had a lot of the same issues since late 2007

cunningham has been a healthy scratch last couple games. pass rush has been better than last year but coverage has been worse. andre carter is doing well, spikes is effective when they rush him the DTs. belichick is notoriously particular about his linebackers being versatile, which has left them with some dudes who can do everything ok, eg ninkovich, while deftly avoiding more one dimensional players like clay matthews.

yeah, def keeping a watch out. 3y at around 10m i bet. i think he has a chance to perform at least as well as c benson did the last couple years. he may not have as much talent but his attitude is approx 1000000 times better.

According to the same source, Hernandez, Lloyd, and two other men were at a bar in Boston the night of the homicide, and at some point, the four men left together in a car driven by Hernandez which was confirmed by a text Lloyd sent another friend, the source says.

It is unclear where the car went or what happened during the ride, but according to the source only three men returned to Hernandez's home at the end of the night and Lloyd was not one of them.

The source also says forensic evidence places a vehicle driven by Hernandez at one of the crime scenes in this case.

As Aaron Hernandez finds himself a suspect in the homicide of a Boston man and the subject of ridiculous media coverage, Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel has released details of another shooting investigation that occurred while the tight end attended the University of Florida in 2007.

From Bianchi:

When Hernandez was at UF, he was once questioned, along with three other Gator football players, about a shooting in Gainesvile. None of the players were arrested, but detectives questioned Hernandez in the shootings of Corey Smith and Justin Glass about 2:30 a.m. after Florida lost to Auburn in 2007. According to a Sentinel report at the time, police said Smith, 28, and Glass, 19, were driving around in traffic about 2:30 a.m. Sunday when a man began shooting into their car. Smith was critically wounded in the head while Glass was shot in the arm.

Hernandez declined to discuss the case with reporters back then and was never charged with any crime.

The Urban Meyer era in Gainesville was marred by a long list of varying criminal charges and investigations, as at least 25 of his players were arrested between 2005 and 2010. In 2009, the Sentinel called local defense attorney Huntley Johnson the team's "defensive MVP" for his work in handling a majority of the student-athletes' cases. After taking the Ohio State job in November 2011, Meyer said that the arrests during his time at Florida were “exaggerated."

Bianchi also relayed details of an incident from very early in Hernadez’s Gators career:

However, when Hernandez first enrolled at UF, he was arrested as a 17-year-old juvenile after an altercation at local campus hangout known as The Swamp. Hernandez received deferred prosecution.

A dude was killed for what seems like the stupidest of reasons by, presumably, someone who was dumb enough to leave shell casings in the car, chewing gum at the murder location, be caught on his own home surveillance system walking around with a gun, trying to destroy that very surveillance system, breaking his cellphone, and hiring an outside company to clean his house top to bottom the day of the murder. It sounds like to me that he just lost his temper and, instead of walking away like an adult, acted like a dumbass and offed the dude with no plans in place to cover his tracks.
