Found out there's a opacity slider for some of the things you can do in Color Efex Pro, so this is less garish than the last:

1st shot in ages, started new job and it's been quite full on.
Anyway, here's one of the views (probably the best) from the office.

yeah i haven't taken any new photos in a while, i've been busy going back to school and you can't just start taking pictures of people you just met its like rude.

plax (ico), Monday, 7 November 2011 19:52 (twelve years ago) link

yeah damn dayo they are something else. i hate being inquisitive about people's photos, as if q & a is gonna produce a OH SO THAT'S WHY IT'S GOOD response, but: you're using like hi-speed (or lo-speed i guess) film, there, for some of those, right? like 1600?? that is what stuff like the rad shot of the streets or the marlboro logo makes me think but i am wrong w/this stuff, so wondered.

hey plax are you still just carrying your camera around? bc i liked all the still-lifey kinda stuff you were shooting, even if you can't take pics of yr new friends

Abattoir Educator / Slaughterman (schlump), Monday, 7 November 2011 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

Oh man oh man.... gf out of town for a bit and lots of negatives coming back soon, so it's gonna be many hours of scanning ahead for me. Fun!
Dayo... I like that shot of the guy eating. The kinda built physique and the striped shirt really make it I think. I mean in addition to the downcast eyes, hand placement, etc.

This has been sitting as my most recent on flickr for quite awhile (was out of town snapping away in SF for a bit, and visiting the awesome store CAMERA HEAVEN in the Tenderloin):

thanks guys! schlump almost everything is either 400 or 400 pushed to 1600 (the high contrast ones are I think).

after going through those photos I think I have a problem w/ chronic underexposure - will need to remind myself to expose a stop or two higher than I have been.

ty! i am counting this as me being 1000% correct, i was near enough. i haven't developed all of the rolls i've fucked around with in various ways, but it feels like you can be pretty flexible w/BW film & get something good back, at least if you're pushing it up. those pics testify to the virtues of exposing well imo, they're so strong, the tones are so deep.

nice to see yr pic chinavision, yr photz are still reminding me of jeff wall somehow.

Abattoir Educator / Slaughterman (schlump), Monday, 7 November 2011 23:27 (twelve years ago) link

I like that... thanks! I dig the shots that are in fact candid but I think look posed. The Jeff Wall fakeout.

It's not just a library, it's a LIBRARY! It's an obnoxious building, tbh.

Still, I like the way that it's so damn big that it can be dawn on one side of it and still night on the other side.

DSMOS has arrived (kenan), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 21:19 (twelve years ago) link

Also at dawn. I swear, no one has ever photographed these buildings before. Nevertheless, I do quite like this photo of them.

Nothing special, but the first film I've gotten back in ages. Portra 400 in a Bronica SQ-A. Ehhhhhh scans from Precision Camera in Austin (better than Costco scans, but I hope I could do way better with a Epson V700)

Thanks guys, i purposely went out the morning after bonfire night knowing it's always misty. The light was only good for about an hour before it became too bright and cleared the mist.
Well worth it though.

not_goodwin, Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:36 (twelve years ago) link

One of the great things about that stag shot is how it's layered. There's no continuous foreground-to-background view. Instead, there are five or six discrete levels of depth. It's spectacular - well done!

Eyeball Kicks, Sunday, 13 November 2011 00:13 (twelve years ago) link

milo: I honestly can't decide if I like that shot better in color or b&w. I think it's pretty excellent either way. I'd be proud of it.

ha ha, what's that? was a television involved?

i just shot a roll of film of a bunch of people i only get to hang out with once, this sunny fall day, then found the roll didn't spool. just want to punch myself in the face. i always suspect it's happening when it happens, too, it's devastating. dammit.

Abattoir Educator / Slaughterman (schlump), Monday, 14 November 2011 05:56 (twelve years ago) link

one way I check that is by winding on a stroke, then rotating the rewind crank until I feel resistance, then shooting and winding on another frame. if I see the rewind crank spin, then I know I'm good

Exceptionally high standard on this thread of late. I barely have anything to offer...

Took a bunch of photos at fireworks/bonfire parties the weekend before last; got some fairly successful firework shots but I quite like the aftermath feel of this one:

Millsner, Monday, 14 November 2011 14:24 (twelve years ago) link

Bummer about the roll, schlump! I think I related a similar experience upthread (or in another thread maybe?). I figure everyone's probably got at least one not-properly-loaded-roll story, and also probably an opened-the-camera-without-rewinding story. The latter one happened to me once, and I just kind of stared at the film dumbly for a second before slapping the camera back shut in a panic. I've caught myself starting to open a camera once or twice before realizing what I was doing.
The joys of film!
