Hasn't anyone in England noticed that Lyndon Dykes is like ten times as good as him? Anyway, great way to celebrate qualifying for the Euros, lose the next two games to two shit teams. I'd be upset if I had any idea what the Nations League (Cup?) is and what it's for.

iirc it mostly determines whether you get to play other good teams in friendlies(ie nations league games) or other shit teams. Win your league and you get promoted, do it a couple of times and you may get to group A. Get to the last four of group A and you go to the finals, win that and you qualify for the Euros ( see Portugal). Noone really cares about it tho it does mean england get to play better teams more regularly than they were doing say 10 years ago. Of course all these "elite" teams could have just arranged better friendlies in the first place but whatever.

Oscar Bravo is close but I've studied UEFA's various tournaments, qualifiers and play-offs some depth and I have ascertained that what essentially happens is that Scotland play Israel over and over again for the right to play Israel. That right is determined by a combination of things such as "have you played Israel in the past ten minutes?"

the algorithms have obviously decide that Scotland and Israel are the most compatible teams and from now on you will have your own competition

Aren't we always playing the Czech Republic too? But, yes, the Israel thing is ridiculous.

... fixed that for you. Iceland, by the way?

i also stand corrected in that i thought nations league games only had other tournament ramifications for the Euros but it appears that wales by being a group B nations league winner get to go into a world cup play off if they fuck up their world cup qualifying group.
― oscar bravo, Thursday, 19 November 2020 16:04 (three years ago) link
although we can't be many years removed from a 64 team world cup where there are multiple group stages and only one team is eliminated per stage and the whole tourney takes place over the course of 2 months.

a tournament fans won't be able to attend: scotland qualify
a tournament in hellish heat at christmas time (with probably only a %age of fans able to attend): scotland 100% qualifying

I was looking at the draw and it seems like the winner of the England Scotland Group D will almost definitely have to play France, Portugal or Germany in the 2nd round, but the runner up plays the runner up from Group E, which is probably just like Sweden or some other not-Spain team. England would be mad to try and get a win against Croatia
Working/training online til 11 that day and will have to perfect my definitely concentrating face

And England never win their opening match whereas Croatia tend to. For some reason I'd like to see England play Ronaldo again 15(!) years later even though Portugal look stronger now than five years ago but it's unusual for defending champions to do well next time so why should they be any different.
