end of the season

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

I'd've said that too, except that fourth is looking a bit precarious to say the least. Is Hiddink in a new job yet?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 5 February 2012 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

End of the season, unless Warnock doesn't take the Leeds job.

Still struggling to work out whether AVB is being asked to do too much too quickly or if he's just not very good.

Matt DC, Monday, 6 February 2012 10:49 (twelve years ago) link

he's been asked to change everything but the usual suspects, not gonna work

eight months pass...

i've yet to decide on matt's poser above, but i like this guy v much.

i don't know how likely it is that a 34 year old millionaire learns from his mistakes (or, indeed, acknowledge he made any) but he seems smart enough to be trying to manage the perceived failings of his doomed chelsea reign.

still over-reliant on coldly planned tactics vs redknappian motivation imo, and really wtf at the gallas thing (why does this kind of blatantly shit selection occur so often???) but, albeit not to quite the level we were at this time last year, and possibly against an ever weaker chasing pack for fourth, things are going well in the transition.

bill paxman (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:10 (eleven years ago) link

and a weaker top three up ahead

Villas Boas isn't an idiot and knows his big man revolutionary approach fucked up at Chelsea. There's no way he'd repeat that and he seems to have avoided the man management clangers he made at Stamford Bridge.

To be fair to AVB he has actually dropped Gallas, it's just that people above him in the pecking line keep getting injured. If Caulker, Vertonghen and Kaboul are all fit (and BAE back to play LB) then he won't be getting a game.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 10:20 (eleven years ago) link

we can hope.

dawson has been sat on the bench a long time waiting to improve our backline, tho.

bill paxman (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 10:24 (eleven years ago) link

My guess is that AVB wasn't particularly confident about Dawson's match fitness, he's been away for a year, and those fears appear to have justified.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 10:25 (eleven years ago) link

It's still difficult to judge AVB really, the players are good enough to tear lesser teams apart but his plan fell apart without a Dembele figure in midfield. The United result obviously bought him a lot of favour but we've been otherwise pretty woeful against top opposition.

Otherwise we've got to hope that Levy has sufficient faith to adequately back him in January, long-term I'm sure he'll be fine, if he lasts that long. If he can mastermind away wins at Everton and Stoke, then I'll be impressed.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 10:50 (eleven years ago) link

without Dembele the lack of a real passing central midfielder is a huge issue. AVB must have expected to get Moutinho. Huddlestone has not been up to the task, Carroll has looked bright, but probably won't be trusted to start or play significant minutes. Would like to see Spurs go after Benat from Betis in January, not sure if they will sell or he'll want to leave while they are in a CL position, though.

Who remembers this little guy?

Wewlay Bewlay (Tom D.), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 16:44 (six years ago) link

weird coincidence. i heard his name the other day and actually struggled to remember who he was for a second. his career trajectory is worthy of greek tragedy (apart from the fact that he's no doubt raking in the cash and is under 40 years old)

-_- (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 16:55 (six years ago) link

Yeah, only 39!

Wewlay Bewlay (Tom D.), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 16:58 (six years ago) link

passé aggresif (darraghmac), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 17:03 (six years ago) link

trying to think of a manager who made a similarly sharp drop from the heights of football to marginality. juande ramos i guess? from real madrid he was sacked by CSKA after 47 days and then went to Dnipro. Currently been without a club for almost a year at only 62.

-_- (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 17:08 (six years ago) link

Lesson is don't be Iberian and go to Tottenham?

actually probably just don't go to real madrid, bernd schuster isn't kicking a baw anymore either

tbftavb I don't think his reputation is necessary sliding that much. He went to Zenit and won the only league title the team has achieved since 2012 and he has turned SIPG into a pretty decent side, albeit one still in the shadow of Guangzhou. I wouldn't bet against him, or Big Phil, doing a Paulinho and coming back to a conventially major club.

Eriksson, Poyet, Capello all failing in the CSL, are probably dead in the water though.

Indeed, Wenger was managing in Japan when he was in mid 40s.

Quitting your job to do the Dakar Rally and crashing into a sand dune almost immediately. If only there were an obvious parallel with his management style.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 11:48 (six years ago) link

Sand dune obviously wasn't where he'd told it to be pre-race

remember the lmao (darraghmac), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 11:58 (six years ago) link

He probably told two of the wheels they weren't in his plans.
